Looks like I'm going out straight from work tonight and I'm not sure when I'll be home so anyone want to take my queue for the last pick of the draft? I guess it doesn't matter since I can't hold up anyone else's picks but just to get the thing done I'll leave a queue if anyone will take it.

What do you guys think is a good "maximum innings pitched per team?" Public leagues use 1250. Draft results will be published after Mattingly gives us that special last pick (PICK A LOON - my vote, Mike Colangelo).

I'm going to pick 1400. That's what the other league had for 8 pitchers. We have 7, but I think it'll encourage more use of waiver wire pitchers... (there's still alot out there). Draft is submitted... what time do you want me to open the waiver wire?

I think anywhere between 1300 and 1400 innings is OK. I say open the waiver wire sometime in the afternoon so I wont have to wake up to grab someone. Also any ideas on how we are going to handle IPOs this year? I really dont feel like staying up till 3AM EST this year.... especially since I am graduating at the end of this semester and will have to get a real job.... maybe some of you guys have a better idea on how to do it

Forgive me for being a little green, this is my first real draft. How exactly would the waiver wire work? What if 2 guys want the same person, is it first come, first serve? Shouldn't everyone be aware that you are opening the waiver wire? The one thing we have proven, is that there isn't anyone around all weekend. I am ok with who I have, so I am not looking for anyone else, but I'm curious to how it's going to work.

. . .and, I would really want to hear both sides of the argument before Imake a final decision, but by using rough math I would feel better about 1300-1400 innings.

I'd assume about half of you have done this or similar figuring already, but let's get it on the table. This is my first league of this kind but I think the idea of limiting IP is to allow for enough innings to for each team to mantain 5 starters and two relievers for most of the season, but not enough for us to micromanage and/or maximize pitcher starts or to make releivers and especially closers nearly useless. If that logic is flawed then the math that follows would be useless as well.
Assuming I'm on the right track, we'll say the average SP gets 34 GS/year (a little high but my natural tendency is to give the benefit to those who would argue for a higher limit since the suggested 1250 number seems ok to me). Using the ESPN fantasy rankings, the top 40 SPs from last year (further giving the benefit to those who prefer a higher IP limit) averaged (by my pre-coffee math) 6.24 innings/start. Note that that number seems high to me but I am too lazy to check my numbers and if high, I would prefer to err on the side of those who might disagree with me. So, 34 * 5 = 170. 170 * 6.24 = 1,060.8. If we go with the suggested 1,250 IP limit, that leaves 189.2 IPs for two closers. Among all ML pitchers the only player to amass over 94 IP and 10+ saves was B Kim, who pitched 98 innings and saved 19 games. I don't see why it is necessary to leave room for excess, but considering the apparently high IP/GS I allowed for and my questionable math, it would seem that I most likely did anyhow. So, unless someone can refute my logic, prove my math wrong or present factors that I have not considered (I certainly leave wide open the possibilities for all three), my vote is to go with the suggested 1250 IP team limit. If any feel that this number is too high, I welcome your arguments as well.

I also feel it notable that that the above argument comes from the weirdo who drafted 9 starting pitchers.

the problem with you logic MITH is that not everyone has planned to start only 5 SPs. Some will wish to start 6 or 7.

MITH, i think we have to make the limit of innings pitched a little higher. I agree with EH that that the people that picked more starters then closers will get screwed.

I did consider that. Obviously, SP have a clear advantage over closers in that relief pitchers cannot possibly amass the strikeout totals of the better SPs. Leaving 1,400 IP really makes closers a lot less valuable and thus less of a necessary part of the game. 1,400 IP allows for you to run 7 SPs for at least half the year and 6 for the rest of it. 1,250 would allow for the srategic challenge of inserting a sixth or seventh SP for a period of time, but makes managing your pitchers more difficult afterward. Maximizing points for a period of time by doing this should guzzle up some of your resources. The more team IP you allow, the more it simplifies the game and makes it easier for those who do less research to succeed.

Wiggs, if anyone were to get screwed by this, it would be me. I drafted 11 pitchers - 9 of them starters.

Here's the thing, I like the idea of seeing people who run 6 and 7 starters the whole year getting penalized at the end of the season by running out of team IP to use.
The only problem I see with the 1250 limit would be that managers who have SPs that are among the league leaders in innings/start would be unfairly penalized for something that shold be solely a reward. I don't know if the Yahoo would allow for it, but I would certainly accept limiting GS rather than IP to remedy this. a limit of 175 - 180 GS with unlimited IP would seem reasonable to me.

That is a fair point but one that should have been made prior to drafting.

Position requirements state 7 Ps. It says nowhere that they can't all be starters. I don't really care one way or the other but since it wasn't stated at the outset the 7 SP strategy has to be taken into account.

Running with 6 or 7 SPs may NOT in fact be the best strategy because though RPs can't provide the K's that starters can. They can bring great WHIPs, ERAs and important SAVE category points.

Every category counts equally, right? If so than RPs have a disadvantage - period. I would be surprised if I did not employ 7 SPs at some point during the season myself, but I don't think you should be able to do it all year. Every league I know of limits team IP, what could be the reason for it if not to keep teams from using exclusively or almost exclusively starters all year.
Regardless, there's still plenty of time and plenty of spring training developments to significantly change the strength and depth of our rosters, not to mention trades and waiver/FA pickups. On closers alone in the past few weeks, Shaw was drafted by someone who surely thought he'd have a job in Cincy. That seems to have fallen through, thus wasting that pick. Then, Tom Gordon going down seemed to waste the pick that drafted him, but make the guy who drafted Farnsworth look like genius. Now, word from Baylor is that he is looking into seeing if Shaw is willing to come over to the Reds, changing that outlook all around agin. Plenty more will happen, and the rosters that look strongest could be the most flawed by opening day.

I'd be in favor of either 1250 or 1400 (or a compromise of 1325), but lets figure it out before the season starts.

Btw, Fosten owns both Shaw and Farnsworth, so he's got the Chicago situation covered pretty well. ;)

I will be opening up waivers this Thursday March 14 at 4 pm.

It seems most people want innings to be on the higher end of 1250 and 1400, so I figure a compromise of 1350 innings should be about right.

I think that 1350 is pointless. That still allows for 7 starters averaging 192+ innings for a season. You could play 6 and 7 sp's per week.

I think there should be a comprimise, but if we want rp's to matter at all, I would suggest no more then 1300 innings. You would still be able to start 6 every week, but you would need at least one closer.

And this should have been discussed before the draft, I would have picked differently.

The lack of response here is somewhat discouraging. At the least there should be a vote on it. Wiggs has expressed that he prefers a higher limit than 1,250 innings and the only others who have voiced opinions are Stealth and EH, but no one gave a number.

I propose we leave it to a vote that will be tallied at the time that waivers are opened. If enough concur, perhaps we should also postpone the waiver opening 24hrs to accomodate as many as possible.

I also request that any who disagree with my reasoning and/or arithmatic on the matter in posts 71, 75, 77 and 79 please present your case. I still leave wide open the possibilities that I could be dead wrong because of factors and/or strategies I may not have considered or corrupt math.

My vote would be for a 1250 inning limit for each team, assuming the GS limit is not a possibility.

I'm a bit rushed for time, if someone could copy this info over to the league msg boards (for those who aren't reading this thread anymore), it would be much appreciated.

The taly for votes on the inning limit is:
1300 innings 4 votes
1250 innings 3 votes

What's the verdict?
1275 innings sounds like a good comprimise,
1278.2 (1,278.667) is most accurate,
1300 would be a majority rule.
