There are 150+ posts in the initial thread. I thought I'd start a new one since the 56k guys are probably getting slow page loads.
Let the bmd bashing continue! (still bummed about that Sasaki thing)

Wiggs, Did you ever receive the league invitation e-mail? Just wondering if you have the same problem. Blockaa has sent me that invite 3 times and I never get it. Apparently you have to enter through that e-mail to be linked to your team. I can see our league page but that's it. Click on a link and it tells me to go to the home page and sign in properly. Definitely anoying.

Tomorrow is not too great for me as I have a basketball game at 9:30 CT so I won't be around from 9-11 but before and after then I should be around.
I'm having problems with running javascripts on my computer. Instead of loading it just gives an image icon without an image. I've reset IE defaults and various other things, if anyone has any idea what is the problem then help would be appreciated. Also, it's not my connection as I tried it on my much slower computer and javascripts worked.

Not sure if it gives too much away but Nevin is supposedly making the switch to 1B to make room for Burroughs. Thus I'm very deep at 3B but can keep both players in my lineup. I felt Nevin gave me good draft flexibility because if a run started on 3B I could play him there but if one was left for too long (Chavez IMO) I could snatch him up and shuffle Nevin to 1B. I thought of all the 1B left that Nevin was the best so moving Nevin to 1B didn't mean that I missed out on a better 1B then had I waited to draft a "true" 3B or 1B.
Kind of confussing perhaps but I thought he was one of the better players available and he gave me flexibility later in the draft.

I have a suggestion to toss out.... so I will...
Since the draft really locks us into to our staff, and the signing to contracts seals the deal, what do you think about a "free trading period" that would begin immediately after the last pick and ends exactly with contracts are due (48 hours after final pick) ???
For example, Owner A could trade a P to owner B for a SS. Since there aren't contracts, there are no salary issues. The only restriction I can think of is that they would need to be 1 to 1 trades (or 2 to 2 trades, etc...) so drops/adds aren't in play. Maybe there would have to be a commisioner approval to avoid collusion or one sided trades, but I don't think that would be an issue. The newly acquired player(s) would still have to be signed by the deadline to a contract.
What I am getting at is this... after contracts are signed (since everyone has a different line of thinking), that same P for SS trade may not be doable if Owner A signed his guy to a 4-year deal and Owner B signed his player to a 1-year deal. Well, it's doable, but much more complicated.
Who knows, perhaps no one will be willing to play Let's Make A Deal, but it will add one small element of fun/strategy to our game.
The same "free trading period" could happen after our free agnet draft next year to (because these players are unsigned) but existing players will still fall under normal rules.
Thought I'd toss this out for discussion. just a way to work on your rosters before they are cemented.

RFS i am up for a free trade period, as long as this draft finishs atleast say 5 days before the season starts. I think we need a few days to decide on the deals we are going to give our players before they are set in stone. I know that the season is along way off, but at the current pace we are setting we will take atleast another week, if not more IMO.

What is the deadline for signing players to contracts? I thought I had read something about 48 hours but I'd certainly be open to extending that deadline to allow more time to evaluate and to make free trades.

I think a free trading period is a good idea. Say, for 48 or 72 hours after the draft? (Depending on when we finish?) Then, for the 48 hours following that, you have to sign your contracts. No trading should be allowed during that time.

Alright . . need to make this quick because I gots to go . .
I think that idea sounds interesting Tim, but I have several reservations . . - it might change people's strategies . . .
- deals might be in the workings BEFORE completion of the draft . .
- . . and it makes it more advantageous to just draft the 'best player available' rather than drafting specifically for your team
Personally, I don't think it's something we should do . . . at least not in this initial draft. However, if the majority of you feel different . . . . well . . .
I'll probably be gone for the next 4 hours . . . I probably won't hold up the draft, but dgausbun might (don't know if he was able to logon this morning, or not) . . . I'm out . .

I'm gonna have to go with blockaa on this one. While it sounds like a fun idea it may cause a change in strategy in the middle of the draft.
Also, one of the things that makes this league different from, for example, Sandbox, is the bones requirement/limit. I'm not sure I want to start figuring out ways to get around the bones.
If anything this shouldn't be a rule change that's implemented now, not after 40% of the draft is finished, but rather before next season.

blockaa and All
Yes, all valid points, but those 3 factors are all included in how the real GM's appraoch drafts!
Again, I only brought it up for disussion. Frankly, I guess it's not really fair to add any rule changes in the middle of the draft since we all signed on for a paticular set of rules.
Which brings me to a second thought. Obviuosly over the course of the first year, there are going to be ideas brought up for disussion such as Minor Leagues and Free Trading Period. Some will be good and some will be bad.
In the future, should we establish some sort of minimum voting percentage to change a rule? Just like the real MLB owners. For example, maybe 8 positive votes should be required to change a rule or add a rule etc.... That way everybody gets to add their $0.02.

I like that idea rfs. 66% seems like a fair requirement to me.
I was just reading the rules for tduncan's new league, and noticed something that maybe we should consider. Will next year's draft be snake style or normal? Snake is meant to keep things fair and equal for all, but that isn't really our goal next year, is it?

Rogue,
That's a good point. Without a great deal of thought, I'd say a normal draft of 1-12, and then 1 starts again. The whole point of the draft order after the season is to help the last place team, so this would make sense.
As for the trading period, it's not a big deal to me either way but I'd prefer to wait until next season's draft.

I think we should wait until next year. I've approached this draft by "signing contracts" as I make my picks. If we change now someone who has/could stock up on youth/vets without considering the long term/short term implications that come with it. Had this been the rule from the onset the strategies utilized by some may have been different. Though I'm not opposed to implementing such an idea in future drafts.

I had a few random thoughts about the playoffs and prize distribution.
First, I don't think it's fair that if a team finishes first in the regular season then has one bad week and ends up not winning any cash(and getting 0 bonus bones). I think the division winners for the regular season should be given some of the prize money. Not as much as the playoff winners but enough to reward them for winning their division.
If we are going to give money out to to the division winners, I think during the first week of the playoffs the division winners should play each other instead of sitting idle for a week. This matchup could be used to determine how much each division winner gets, say 40 bucks for the winner of that match up and 20 bucks for the loser. If we take out the 60 bucks for division winners then I see the prize break down for the playoffs as, $80 1st place $40 2nd place and $20 3rd place.
What do you guys think?

great . . . it's good to hear people throw out ideas/suggestions. It's those things that will strengthen the league and make the game more fun.
Richard . . . I noticed (post 61) where you mentioned tduncan's idea of a 'normal style' draft. I'm glad you brought this up. If you look back on the rules page that I wrote up for our league, you'll notice under the free agent/rookie draft heading where I clearly state that these drafts will be worst to first every round (not serpentine). I think this is one of the many rules that tduncan borrowed when writing up the rules for his league. But enough about that . . . I won't say anything more . . . seeing as how several of the guys in this league are also participating in that one.
I like the idea of a two-thirds vote on any rule change. Hopefully we won't run into many big 'issues', but you never know . .
I'll think more about the prize money and weigh in on that soon. We obviously need a decision before the season begins. The 'free trade period' is something we won't be using this draft, but may think about using it for future drafts . . . right? Great . . . need to research my next pick.

Oops, I probably should have checked into the rules before posting, but oh well. Good to see its an issue that was already thought of.
I'm in agreement with the rest so far on the prize distibution. Making the playoffs is half the battle, and thus should deserve a prize.

RFS,
Damon was a hard pick for me. He screwed my team in the first half last year and there are a couple of other players I really want. Obviously hoping he'll do well.

It's 530P MST. I'll be gone 1-2 hours. I have bmd's next pick if it gets to him (and he's not back). I gave bmd's next pick to CCR as well as mine, so he may chime in if it moves along.

Michael . . . really great ideas about the prize money (post 68). I think that breakdown is perfect, too. Should be fun knowing that two teams will be playing for money in the first round of the playoffs. In favor of beastiemiked's proposal in post 68:- beastie
- blockaa
- dgausbun
- cEHp
- Code Cracker
- rockafellerskank
Only two more votes and the referendum will be passed.
I'm extremely pleased with the way everything has gone thus far. The draft is moving along nicely and we should have no problems completing all 25 rounds in time. I believe at our current pace we should finish up around the 20th (just a guess). It's nice to see camaraderie/competitiveness rather than so much of the chaos/bickering going on lately on these boards. I realize wazaaap_guy hates his team, but I hope that everyone else is happy with their picks. Usually I find picking in these type drafts to be fairly easy, but I feel like I've had several difficult choices already in this one.
for those who don't know . . . rockafellerskank is going to be our 'bones guy'. He will keep up with everyone's 'bone balance' and make sure that all transactions are legit (with regard to bones). As stated in the rules, everyone will receive 30 bones after players from this initial draft have been signed to contracts. Out . . .

I didn't realize the prize $ discussion was actually a vote...I am all for the idea. That should make 8 'yes' votes.
