Maybe they should have to select placeholders for them (i.e. -- pitchers who are seriously injured or out for the season?) and put them in Yahoo!? Just to temind them that they own a player not currently in Yahoo!?

My post further explained.....
The Auction Draft was for your 25 player MLB roster. In which every player was eligible. It was up to the manager if he decided he wanted to bid on a prospect and have him on his major league roster and he never gets called up during his season that was his decision. That player cannot be sent down to the minor leagues. If the manager wants to keep him next season he would need to resign him to a contract.
The Minor League Draft the only players eligible are players that are rookie eligible (I don't think that I can be any more clear). So basically , If you wanted to draft Cliff Lee you cannot.

We amended the rules regarding waivors right?
Also I clarification on 11.6. So if a player is called up before Sept 1 but would retain his rookie status he can no longer be kept on the minor league roster? i believe Clay Bucholz did this last year. (as did chamberlain, kennedy, etc) in this case of Bucholz since he countn't be on my minor league roster anymore would I have to bring him up last year when he made a start in August or could I wait til this spring to add him to my major league roster?
Also if a player is not called up until after september 1 but passes the rookie eligibility requirements he can still be kept?
Sorry to be asking these questions now.

No problem DPR ask all the questions ya like.
Ya that rule sheet still needs to be updated.
Once you draft a minor league player he can stay on there forever, but once you call him up he cannot be sent back down.

can you explain rule 11.6 then. Its says you once a player is called up to the majors he is bound by contract. What is this contract then.
Also could I hypothetically hold Jacob McGee on my minor league team even after he has pitched 200+ innings for the 5th year in a row?

Yes you can keep Mcgee on your minor league roster for the next 20 years if you wanted to.
When you call up a Minor League player there is a $5 fee. That comes out of your allocated FAAB balance which is $100 at the start of the season.
When you call up a Minor Leaguer to your active roster his salary is $5. Then you have to make a decision. You cannot send him back down the minors. You can resign him for one year at $5 in which after the next season he must be released. Or resign him to a long term contract using the same system as other active players.
Calling up a minor leaguer is the only way you are allowed to go over your $260 cap.
For example: Say you drop a player that has a contract that is $1 and you bring up your minor leaguer. Well assuming your roster value was at $260 it would now be $264. Before the next season though you must stay under the $260 cap.
I hope this is worded well enough. Let me know if you understand.

The minor league part makes sense although I didnt realize the part about not being able to go over 260. So if say I am out of it this year and want to rebuild I cant send you Prince Fielder (who say doesnt show enough to warrant being kept) for Ian Kennedy who is having a great year and will be bargain to keep in future years but obviously not as value as Fielder for the playoff push?

I see your point DPR. Im just sure not ow to justify being able to go over the cap. I suppose it would make it tougher next year on who to keep, but im not sure.
I would like some league input on this. What does everyone think?

I dont think it is said anywhere in the rules that you can't go over 260 and personally I think you should be able to.
Consider bidding on free agents also. if you cant go over 260 then for many teams filled with $1 players your max bid is $1. it puts these teams at a distinct disadvantage. Also we were encouraged to spend all our money so those teams which kept some spare would be able to better afford FAs. Because of these reasons I think we need to ignore the cap from opening day til the end of the season.
In terms of trades like Fielder for Kennedy in August i think this is part of the fun of the game. In a keeper league elements which pair short term success with longterm only add to the challenge

I don't understand what you mean about bidding on free agents. You have to have a cap or everyone could just bid an unlimited amount on a player and nobody would ever win.

No I am saying if your roster cant go over 260 then your ability to bid on free agents is limited. For example using your team If you want to pick up the hot new closer you could only bid a dollar or have to drop a player of significance from your roster whereaas Khahan with his 20 extra dollars wouldnt ahve to drop a quality player to add a free agent who is popula.
I understand the need for the $100 FAAB.

DPR the way I understood it is the 260 cap number is only for the draft. After that you are able to make as many trades as you want. You also can add as many FA's as you want using your separate FAAB budget which we decided on earlier. Then Next year at the draft you have to be under or at the 260 cap again.
As for FAAB(Free Agent Auction Bidding) it works like this. Each team gets $100 for the year. Each week there is a silent auction with bids due by Midnight Sunday CST. Any player you pick up counts against your FAAB budget unless you bid $0.
The $5 number is how much it would cost you at minimum to keep that player next year, however if you bid $20 on a player than that would be there price for next year.
Now I'm not positive that this is exactly what JTserb was thinking when we last had this discussion, but it really is the only way I see working at this point.

With regards to going over the cap (this coming from the guy w/ the most left over): It was pretty clearly stated before we started that the $260 was for the draft only and had no bearing on in-season activity. The only time the $260 would come into play after this draft was when we started the 2009 draft.
Because of that and other reasons, I do not think the $260 cap should stay in place throughout the season.
I obviously have no problem adding unused draft cash to the $100 FAAB cash we have :) But if we don't, I'm fine with that, too.
Also with regards to an in-season cap of $260....this would severely hamper trading. That is a very bad thing in my opinion.

As soon as the draft ends (has it ended?) the $260 is totally irrelevant as far as I can see. Trades can be made just as in a regular league. We don't start counting salaries against the cap till next year. You can trade for a roster that was auctioned for $460 if you can swing the deals.
JTSERB said -- spend your $260 -- there's nothing to save it for.
That's how I understood it.

During the season I agree it would hamper a lot of activities if we had a cap. I had a different idea of it, but in hindsight what all of you are saying makes a lot of sense.
The only time then you have to stay under the $260 cap would be at the beginning of each season. Is that how everyone had understood it?

More questions.
When is is the first time we can use our FAAB budget?
Also a couple of WGs assumptions I differed on. Are you able to bid 0 or is the minimum $1? Also if I do win a free agent for less than $5 is his salary next year $5 or is it whatever bid for him?

His salary is always $5. It does not matter what you bid on him. The FAAB balance just allows you to get the rights to the Free agent.
You can bid $0 on a Free Agent. So basically if you want to pick up a player and you dont think anyone will want him. You just send in a $0 bid.

DPR, I think you what you are getting confused on is that the FAAB has nothing to do with what the players contract value will be.
All Free agents contract will be $5 no matter what.
The only exception is if a players is on waivers and someone picks him up. If that is done than his contract is the same as it was before he was dropped.

I'm confused.
Official rules as distributed re waivers say:
"9.1. Any player may be released at any time by his rotisserie team. 9.2. When a player is released, he is placed on waivers for 2 days. Within those 2 days, the lowest placed team to claim the player acquires the player. Waiver priority will be tracked using yahoo. 9.3. When a player is claimed off waivers, his salary is the same as when he was dropped. 9.4. After the 2-day waiver period has passed, if the player has not been claimed, he immediately becomes a free agent and is available to all teams."

Toral, those rules were the ones that were in place before we instituted the FAAB system. That is why is still says 2 days. I know I have to update it all and it will be soon.
We are using FAAB system for FA wire why wouldn't we for waivers?

Hey Khahan,
I seen you dropped Baldeli. I just want to make sure you know that there is a cap penalty for that which will be imposed next year.
11.4. If a player is released before the end of his contract, the team releasing that player will be penalized as follows: The team's salary cap will be decreased by $1 for each year in the total number of years in the contract. For example, if a player is signed to a 4-year contract and is released during his second season, the team waiving the player will have $3 removed from his allotted salary cap in the next season, leaving that team with only $257 instead of the usual $260.
Just a heads up since it is early I want to make sure you are aware of this.

Just a clarification on the rules before tomorrow's games start.
According to the rules on the Yahoo site there shows a Maximum Games Played for hitters and Maximum Innings Pitched. I thought we agreed to a minimum IPs, and I don't remember there being a maximum games played for hitters. Could we get a clarification?

Yes, you can win a player with a bid of $0. If there is a tie I will notify the league and there will be a re-bid for the players (blind again). Only the managers that tied will be allowed to re-bid again though.

So... Are we bidding for Waiver Wire Pick ups, or are we able to request in order of standings rank (last to first) as it stated in the original rules. If we bid it seems like we are treating him just like a free agent and his salary should then be $5 not his original salary from the team that dropped him. If we select him in waiver (my preference) his salary THEN should be his salary as it existed on the team that dropped him. If he clears waivers then he becomes a free agent and FAAB rules should apply.
A second question arises in view of post #55. I thought that the Penalty applied only to players offered a long term contract. If it applies to all players that get dropped then each time we pick up a player, whether from waivers, free agent, or our minor league roster (we have to drop one to balance our roster) we take a $1 hit on next years $260 bidding cap. This might seriously curtail Free Agent Action. Also when a trade is involving an unbalanced # of players (someone) must be dropped. For example Wiggs and I agree to a deal: I send him Ruth & Mantle, In exchange I get Ford, Gibson, and Mays. To balance my roster I have to drop a player. Do I take a $1 hit on next years salary cap on this as well?

GC, we are bidding on FA using the FAAB balance. This was decided over a month ago.
To pick up any player off of Free Agency, Waivers you must big on him using your FAAB balance.
And yes if you drop any player regardless if he has a 1 year contrat or a 20 year contract there is a penalty for dropping him. I like this rule because it makes you think about dropping players and not just go pick a new player every to week to try and get lucky with a new closer.
So in short.
If you want a player that is in Free Agency or on the waivers you must send a bid to me saying who you want to drop and who you want to pick up and how much you are bidding on him.
If you pick up a player from Free Agency his contract is $5.
If you pick up a player from waviers his contract is whatever it was before. IE: I drop Pujols and someone picks him up during waivers. His contract is still $36.

Concerning Baldelli and the $1 hit:
I was not really aware of that but it appears that is how the rules are written. I'll take the hit on my cap and I understand you thinking behind the rule.
However, I do agree with goldcoach in post 72. I think the negative impact this rule may have will far outweigh the postive impact. The only real positive is you negate cluster add/drops to avoid stumbling into a closer or new everyday player
The negatives are far greater to me though. Baldelli is basically out for the season, so due to an injury and that rule I am either penalized this year by being 1 slot short I'm penalized next year by losing $1 on my cap.
Trading will be stifled by this rule for the reasons GC posted. Good teams and bad teams alike will be hurt by this rule when the random injuries occur. I'd like to propose that the salary cap hit only be applied if a player is signed to a contract longer than 1 year and I'll leave it up to JTserb if we do this or go to a vote. But I really think the rule the way it is written now is going to do far more harm than good.

Anyone else have anything to say about dropping a 1 year contract player and not taking a cap hit? I like the way it is now, but that doesn't mean that's the best way.
Do you think that if you drop a 1 year contract player that there should be no penalty?

Id be higly against the penalty for dropping a 1 year contracts, I mean we don't even really need FAAB then, as there were probably be very few pickups in this league, if any at all. My understanding is the penalty was for breaking long term contracts, which I agree is necessary but thought was also too low. Id be for increasing the penalties for breaking contracts and not having penalties for 1 year players that you drop.

I also dont think we need a penalty for players who are dropped who are on a 1 year contract. I would even extend this to include players in the last year of a long term contract so that it can be more balanced

I think that actually leaves the system open for abuse. After going .300 50/50 100 runs I sign Brandon Phillips to a 3 year from 2009 to 2011. He tanks 2009 and 2010. Come day 1 of 2011 when he should be getting 'paid' I drop him with no penalty rather than keep his horrid stats taking up a slot.

I would be for a player on a one-year contract to not have a penalty when dropped. I don't want to get a player for $1 who does absolutely nothing, drop them and then cost me that $1 again next year. It also will end up costing me $6 to bring up a minor league player. Conversely I agree that players signed to a long-term contract that are dropped have a fine. The situation given in post 86 is a perfect example of why.

No, you cannot draft him Kyle. Any player that has been on a Major League roster. Meaning our rosters in PFAL cannot sent back down to the minors.
I am going to assume your talking about Josh Fields. Now next season if Fields isn't on anyone team he can be either drafted in the Major league draft or the Minor league draft.

Ok that's cool. I just figured I'd ask and clarify the rules on the minor league draft.

In response to 86 the penalty is that they players salary would still hurt against salary in the draft jsut that after the draft you can drop the player without fine

I think that the fines against dropping a player who has a long term contract should definately apply. Makes us serious about offering such contracts. Using the ex in 86, as I under stand the rules Dropping Brandon Phillips in 2009 cost Khahan $3 from his Spring 2010 $260 Bidding allowance, the following year his allowance reverts to $260. Dropping him in 2010 costs him $2 for Spring 2011 draft, the following year his allowance reverts to $260. And dropping him in 2011 cost $1 for Spring 2012, the following year his allowance reverts to $260.

In a sense this mimics real life. The White Sox kept Crede on their roster even though Fields (in the minors)had a better spring. Why? Because they were unable to trade him and if the released him to make room for Fields (or someone else) it was going to cost them REAL MONEY; so they decided to keep him, hoping he'll get hot and they can make a trade in the early part of the season.

I'm ok with dropping anyone that is in a long term contract getting a penalty. In fact I'm for that. What I don't like is the idea of being penalized for dropping a guy I drafted this year for $1 like stated above.

I think this is what I am getting. Someone tell me if I am wrong.
At the end of this year we have the option to extend contracts to at least 8 players and at most 15 players. These can be either for a 1 year extension at the same price or multiyear extensions for the $5 prorated contracts.
If we cut a player who has a multiyear contract there is a fine for (How many years is left on their contract times $1) that will be subtracted from your next year's $260 salary cap.
e.g. I keep Babe Ruth (originally $5) for 5 years. I cut him in the middle of year 2 so he has 4 years left on his contract. I get fined $4 in 2010, $3 in 2011, $2 in 2012 and $1 in 2013.
Is that what everyone else is understanding? Or are you only fined $4 in '10?

Ok, Thanks Kyle, but if we dont sign contracts til the end of the season there should be no penalty for this season right?
Also you said At the end of this year we have the option to extend contracts to at least 8 players and at most 15 players. These can be either for a 1 year extension at the same price or multiyear extensions for the $5 prorated contracts.
Do we have to do 8?

I understood the penalty for dropping a Long Term Player applied only to the next years draft cap, ie.e its a one time penalty. Since there are no long term contracts this year there should be no penalties assesed this year.(except DB for overbidding)

Rule 14.1 From Season to season, each team must retain between 8 and 15 players, excluding minor league players. there is a limit of 4 minor league players a team may keep from one year to the next.

Rule Regarding Dropping Players
You are allowed to drop any player that was originally signed to a 1 year deal without a cap hit.
If you drop a player that is in a multi year contract, the following penalty is applied. For each remaining year on the contract including the one that you are currently in you will be fined $1.
IE: I drop Albert Pujols in year 3 of a 5 year deal the penalty will be $3, which is applied to the following season and that season only
Formula for dropping multi-year contracts.
Cap Hit=(Contract Length - Current Year of Contract)+1
You must keep between 8-15 players each season.

Site has been updated. Contracts and Minor League draft pages still need to be completed, but should be by this weekend.
I have added a Trade Block page. If you wish to add players to your trade block page just send them to my email and I will put them on the site.
Check it out PFAL
Let me know what you think, if you notice any errors, or if you have any ideas of what to add to the site.
Thanks JT

When you send me your free agent add drops please type a message in the body.
For example: This is for the FAAB Pickup. I am only writing this so it's long enough to not be read in the inbox of g-mail.
When I check my email inbox it gives a preview of every message. It shows about the first 50 characters or something. So while I am not opening the email I could and probally will see who you want to bid on.
