Depends on how you want to do it and where the two laptops are at.

If they are both in the same room and realatively close just get a router, go from the cable modem to the router and then from the router to the NIC card on each laptop.

If they are not in the same room and you want to hard wire them, then you need to figure out how to string the ethernet cables from the router to each computer.

The easiest way is to go to a wireless router. Which also has a hard wire capability. That allows you to run an ethernet cable to the nearest laptop and then you have to put a wireless NIC in the other laptop. If you have a newer laptop, it might already have a wireless NIC in it.

Make sure you look at NICS and see whether you are set for 501B or G. This is protocol of the router.
B is older and slower. G is newer.

Here is a good link on how different methods are set up and work.

How Home Networking Works

You can also do a search on Home Networking and it will give you tons of data.

This has all been typed from my laptop in the family room using my wireless connection.

The router is upstairs in my office hardwired to my desktop.

Anymore questions, give me a shout.

Wow, don't know what I had in my coffee this morning.
Should say 802.11b or 802.11g.
Duh....
