Subject: startup question

  Posted by: Perm Dude - [2343587] Wed, Aug 25, 2004, 14:10

This was answered for me before but I can't find the answer and the problem has returned.

When I start up my computer, it goes into DOS and then asks me to press the DEL key to continue with the startup. If I don't press DEL it never starts up (in other words, there is no default after a period of time to continue).

How do I get rid of this step?

I would think the best way may be to go into your setup menu after restarting-----often times holding one of the PF keys does that (PF8? PF10?). Once in that menu, there are a ton of options, and likely one that will prevent this----depending on the brand computer, type bios, etc, depends on the options and wording. Some computers have detailed manuals that came with them explaining all of these options..........whether to scan the floppy drive or not was always one that I turned off on older computers because it wasn't needed everytime I restarted, for example.

You have to go into your boot.ini file.

I had a problem where on startup it would keep asking me which operating system it wanted me to use but I only had one operating system.

Turned out the problem was in the boot.ini file which i had to edit.

I found out how to edit it by looking up "two operating systems" on the internet, google I think.

Maybe you can do the same thing.

I should have said you "might" have to go into the boot.ini file.

That might be the problem.

once in windows click on start then run the type msconfig

First place I would check is the autoexec.bat file and see whats in there. There is a tab for boot.ini file there as well.
