I've used Quark extensively, and it's a fantastic program. Definitely earned its way to the top as an industry standard.
I've not used InDesign, as it's come along more recently, after I'd already switched away from print design. But it's an Adobe product, which guarantees it's good. And I've heard nothing but raves. From what I understand, InDesign is better at hooking into a database, letting you draw article text dynamically. And at some point, I think it may have had better web export features, but I'm not sure if that's true anymore. I'm a little out of the loop.
But I'm virtually certain you're going to be happy with either program. Personally, I would *not* try to do layout in Illustrator, though. I can see where it would be possible, but either Quark or InDesign is going to be so much better.
