so, i'm looking for software to design a magazine. i have some experience with pagemaker, although some folks reccomend quark and InDesign.

i also have someone saying i can do a magazine layout on illustrator too, but i've never tried.

thoughts?

I've used Quark extensively, and it's a fantastic program. Definitely earned its way to the top as an industry standard.

I've not used InDesign, as it's come along more recently, after I'd already switched away from print design. But it's an Adobe product, which guarantees it's good. And I've heard nothing but raves. From what I understand, InDesign is better at hooking into a database, letting you draw article text dynamically. And at some point, I think it may have had better web export features, but I'm not sure if that's true anymore. I'm a little out of the loop.

But I'm virtually certain you're going to be happy with either program. Personally, I would *not* try to do layout in Illustrator, though. I can see where it would be possible, but either Quark or InDesign is going to be so much better.

thanks JKP. at the moment i'm using Pagemaker, basically because i have some familiarity with it from my newspaper days.

i got the hang of it again pretty quick, but may move to indesign, although it doesn't appear a trial version is available on the adobe site, unless i missed it.
