Subject: RIFC - Draft

  Posted by: Guru - [330592710] Fri, Aug 13, 2004, 12:23

This thread will be used for discussion during the RIFC draft.

First, a few useful links:
Draft recap in pick order Draft grid by team & position

Here is the draft order:
1 culdeus
2 Perm Dude
3 TB
4 Sludge
5 leggestand
6 Challenger
7 Mike V
8 Taxman
9 Ender
10 CanEHDian Pride
11 deepsnapper
12 Motley Crue
13 Guru
14 GoatLocker

The clock will start on Monday morning. It will initially be set at 8 hours, with a moratorium from approx. midnight-7am EDT. If the clock expires, the next person in line will get to draft, and the skipped drafter will make up his skipped pick whenever he can. The clock will be relaxed or eliminated on weekends. We'll discuss that later in the week, as we see how progress is going. We need to average about one round per day, so we cannot afford to have many picks time out.

People at the endpoints of the draft have only one single time limit to make their consecutive picks. This applies only to GoatLocker and culdeus. The software does not handle it this way automatically, but I can override if the situation arises. In other words, people at the endpoints don't get a double time limit to make their 2 picks. Both picks must be made within one time limit period.

We will maintain a draft discussion thread here, but it will probably not be used extensively. If you know that you have pending time constraints, please post them in this thread. (e.g., "I'll be away until 6pm ET, so if my pick is due before then, you'll have to wait.") To the extent that you can alert everyone to potential availability issues, you can help others to plan their check-in times accordingly. That's simply good draft etiquette.

If you know you will be away when your next pick is likely to be due, you can deputize another manager to make the pick for you. There is a way to do this in the Kafenatid software. You can also always email your pick queue to me in advance. (I am automatically allowed to enter a pick for anyone, so you don't need to deputize me.) As long as you put "RIFC queue" in the subject line, I'll promise not to peek inside if I have an intervening pick. Scout's honor.

I will attempt to update picks at the Fanball site daily, so that league managers can use that site's player tools to review the available pool. Be aware, however, that Fanball updates will typically be a partial round behind the actual draft.

When drafting, there is no need to draft every position. For example, if you want to skip a kicker, be my guest. However, the Fanball software will force you to fill each of the 12 active slots when you set your lineup for each game. You will not have the ability to leave an active slot blank, so plan your bench needs accordingly.

As a final caveat, I will be on vacation during the first 2 weeks of the draft. I do plan to keep up, checking in several times daily. But there will be times when I might not be as available as usual.

Culdeus has until Monday at 2pm EDT to make the first pick. Any picks made prior to Monday morning are discretionary, and not timed. There is no need to get an early start - but feel free to do so, if you are so inclined.

You want us to pick up the players as we pick or what? Should save you a step.

FYI it looks like LaVarArrington has signed with the NFLPA and does exist on the draftable player pool now (finally). Or else this site just puts him on there anyway.

ADP has 2 RB at top of the list right now and according to ADP at the time of his draft position, the two he lost were D. Davis and Dillon. ADP doesn't take into account all of our scoring rules.

If KKB volunteered to jump in and draft for him, I am all for it. If he didn't, I volunteer him anyway. ;)

I'm going to enter those two picks for him, and we can restart the draft. When we get to his 3rd round pick, we'll have some decisions to make - assuming he is still AWOL.

1. Continue to make picks based upon some objective ranking(s) - this approach has a limited lifespan, however

2. Appoint someone to draft in his stead. Depending on the situation, this person might ultimately take over for that team for the season.

Selecting someone to fill in can be a delicate issue, and I'd prefer not to debate various candidates here. If any managers have specific candidate suggestions, please send me an email. If any observers would like to volunteer, please send me an email. I'll try to come up with contingency short list, which we can then let league managers vote on in private.

It came up with TO at 2.07 and Barber at 2.09, or vice versa.

Re #77

This is a tough call. I'm sure you could get someone to take over the team, but I'm very concerned about this team being at a disadvantage already. I definitely think a surrogate drafter needs to be assigned. In case GoatLocker doesn't come back, we won't have to vote every time his pick comes up, or consult AntSports (which could have us drafting the team 2 QB's by the 5th round). Someone with a lot of draft experience and who would be willing to play out the season with the team if need be.

Draft rationale thread has been created.

I've always found it best to draft my raionale for each pick at the time it is made. This allows me to remember what I was thinking at the moment. It is then a simple matter to copy it in to the rationale thread when due two rounds later.

In fact, I sometimes draft the rationale before I make the pick. On more than one occasion, I've decided that my rationale was uncompelling (to me), and decided to change my intended pick.

I agree with MC: That team is already a halfstep behind and would need the attention of a very good drafter at this point.

Give all the RIFC qualifier threads, I don't think there should be a lot of difficulty at this point finding someone to at least draft for Cliff.

Very tough pick for me because of the value on the board. I won't go into detail now, because A) the other players I thought about are still on the board and B) you can read all about it in a couple rounds. =)

I knew I could get Smith if someone traded with me and I moved down, but I also knew I couldn't pass on him now and expect him to still be here at 4.12. I didn't want to hold up the draft waiting for offers, but I thought for sure someone lower down would want to move up.

"Can you tell the board I want Santana Moss and they can go on, it isn't letting me pick that spot."

OTC is showing leggestand with the next pick so it doesn't look like the trade is being recognized.

Via trade Culdeus selects
3.05 Santana Moss, WR, NYJ

Probably not, but I bet an Atlanta jury wouldn't mind. And as far as I know, the charges have been filed in Federal Court in Atlanta. But, I wouldn't let any of that discourage you. I am expecting 1,800 rushing yards this year for Jamal. And that's just against the Browns.

Smith at that spot was a very good pick. I probably would have taken him with my next pick despite the fact that I don't have a QB yet (a malady which will be remedied in a few minutes). He was just too much value at this point in the draft, IMHO, to pass up if he fell to me.

Dang it Guru! You stole my super sleeper pick in Dante Hall. Truthfully, I almost nabbed him instead of Toomer in the 4th round, but 1) I was worried about drafting a player who primarily counted on return yards (even though those punt returns are money) and 2) I was hoping he wasn't on anyone's radar. Using last years stats he projects to be a top 8 WR in our scoring format. Even using some low projections I still rated him equal to Toomer and Smith.

Feel free to steal some of this for your draft rationale. =)

Starting to see a lot of players I have been looking at for my next pick coming off the board. Tomorrow will be a very busy day at work for me and I might have to leave a queue with MC depending on how far we move tonight.

5.11 Quentin Griffin, RB, Denver Broncos

Given the choice of taking a wide reciever or a running back off the top of my ranking board, I chose to take the top rated running back.

Quentin Griffin isn't the prototypical Denver running back, but given his speed and quickness, he's going to gain yards at the running back posiiton in the Denver scheme of run blocking. The age of dual backs may be upon us in the NFL. Quentin's hero is Dunn by all accounts.

I was very happy to see Quentin fall to the end of round 5 and me for my# 3 back. Running backs are always the hardest position to fill with productive players. Add into that the 8 bye weeks which are on the schedule and we have teams on byes one week or another nearly 50% of the season. That's a lot of substutions.

I wasn't confident he'd make the turnaround & come back to me in Rd #6, so I made the pick for Griffin now. It's almost as if I loose as many players in the draft on the short turnaround as I do on the long one. Go figure.

That was my first one-off pick, the guy I wanted (And thought would slide) was picked one spot before me. Argghhhh.

TB[195] - Last night I turned off the clock shortly before midnight, as usual. That was the agreement all along (see initial post).

Everybody - since we're making good progress, I will turn off the clock at midnight tonight and leave it off during the weekend. However, I hope we can continue to make forward progress on Saturday and Sunday. If you are going to be away for an extended period, please continue to make backup arrangements.

culdeus, are you talking about Fitzgerald? It'll be interesting to see how things shake out there in Arizona, but it looks like he'll get a lot of balls thrown his way so he's got some upside.

OK. Either I just put myself in the top third for defense with that pick (Mark Fields) or I just wasted a pick.

Had him on my radar for two picks now and just didn't want to lose the chance to pick him up. Obviously I'm banking on a return to his amazing 2002 season. If he does, it was well worth a pick at this point.

Nice pick PD, guess he won't make it back to me :)
TB,
Can't read the 7th bullet down as I don't pay for it.

Guru, queue sent, but I'll be around until roughly 8:00 EST (I'm going to see Weird Al with my son). If I come up before then I'll make my own pick.

I'm ready to pick..but a hint of a trade offer floated by a little while ago, so I will give it another 30 minutes to hear back, then I will draft.

That'd work Fred, With me blowing my left eye out Monday, I'm not real visually versatile ATM so I'm laying off the PC as much as possible until next week at least.

It is ready for you to insert your rationale. It was only a couple off. As a league we have been doing pretty good staying current with rationales.

This is the yakkingest bunch about players who haven't been taken in the draft, and I haven't got through the 2nd round's rationales!

What's up with that? Are we writing about our picks or who we didn't draft?

I can't quite decipher that last post. If you were refering to my last rationale, Dante Hall, Chad Pennington, and the NE Defense have all been drafted. I suppose I could have just said I like Jimmy cuz he eats his Wheaties and catches lots of balls, but that doesn't quite help the reader know exactly what was going through my mind when I made the selection.

=)

Wow, I went back and read my rationales and realized that I did talk about an undrafted player very early on. My bad. I do tend to babble on and will have to be a bit more careful.

I see I posted about Koren Robinson, but he had already been drafted by the time I wrote the rationale.

Oh, wait, I posted about the NE Defense. Damn. Sorry.

LOL, you are right Guru. I didn't look to see who you picked (Wayne), I just read the rationale before I jumped off the computer.
