Subject: RIFC 2005: Draft Discussion

  Posted by: Guru - [330592710] Wed, Aug 17, 2005, 14:01

The clock will start on Friday morning. It will initially be set at 6 hours, with a moratorium from 11pm-7am EDT. If the clock expires, the next person in line will get to draft, and the skipped drafter will make up his skipped pick whenever he can. The clock will continue to run on weekends.

People at the endpoints of the draft have only one single time limit to make their consecutive picks.

We will maintain a draft discussion thread here, but it will probably not be used extensively. If you know that you have pending time constraints, please post them in this thread. (e.g., "I'll be away until 6pm ET, so if my pick is due before then, you'll have to wait.") To the extent that you can alert everyone to potential availability issues, you can help others to plan their check-in times accordingly. That's simply good draft etiquette.

If you know you will be away when your next pick is likely to be due, you can deputize another manager to make the pick for you. There is a way to do this in the Kafenatid software. You can also always email your pick queue to me in advance. (I am automatically allowed to enter a pick for anyone, so you don't need to deputize me.) As long as you put "RIFC queue" in the subject line, I'll promise not to peek inside if I have an intervening pick. Scout's honor.

I will attempt to update picks at the Fanball site daily, so that league managers can use that site's player tools to review the available pool. Be aware, however, that Fanball updates will typically be a partial round behind the actual draft.

When drafting, there is no need to draft every position. For example, if you want to skip a kicker, be my guest. However, the Fanball software will force you to fill each of the 12 active slots when you set your lineup for each game. You will not have the ability to leave an active slot blank, so plan your bench needs accordingly.

Rationales will be expected for each pick, but deleayed by two rounds. When we near the end of round two, I will set up a thread for those.

As a final caveat, I am on vacation during the first week of the draft. I do plan to keep up, checking in several times daily. But there will be times when I might not be as available as usual.

Sludge has until Friday at 1pm EDT to make the first pick. Any picks made prior to Friday morning are discretionary, and not timed. There is no need to get an early start - but feel free to do so, if you are so inclined.

I will set up a draft tracker program that is accessible to those outside the league. A link will be posted here shortly.

I'm heading out for the night now. It will likely be 24 hours until I make my pick, because with Priest off the board, I am heavily considering a player who plays in tomorrow night's game.

If you guessed Todd Bouman, move back 2 spaces and lose a turn.

Now that's funny! I have been wavering on selecting Holmes ever since I selected #3 position.

Not to early to entertain trade offer(s)

FYI - Since the subject of TRADES has been raised. I'm not 100% certain on this yet; but I'll be considering trading 2.01 to someone for their 2nd rounder and a couple updgrades in later rounds.

It may be an interesting option for someone who is considering going QB early?

NO unbalanced offers please. Use this site as a guide:

Crap, I'm sitting here going "Now why hasn't Doug selected yet?" and all I had to do was stop in here and check it out.

I have a 2 man queue that I am choosing from, and I will be happy with either guy. I'm ready to rock as soon as Doug picks.

I work days, with zero net access. If the 3 next picks go before tomorrow morning, and Guru makes his pick before 10am EST, I will be ready to make mine.

If not, I will have a que ready and sent to someone who is around during the day.

MC- wanna be my que guy? At 5th, I would have no issues with you taking my que.

Yes, yes, yes, come one come all and give me your queues. The only slight technical problem for me is that I cannot access Kafenatid during the day. Some nasty bugger decided it should be on the naughty list here at the airfield. I am planning to draft from work via e-mail to Guru. But in the evenings and on weekends I will be around constantly.

legge, that's fine.
kev, fine, too. If you come up and your queue has a pick, I will fire off an e-mail to Guru.

Mostly people don't want to hold up the train, Doug, so they send out queues to several different people. Some people know they will be online all damn day, so for them it's not really an issue.

Right, but I mean, we can't enter the draft picks on their behalf, can we (via Kafenatid)? I thought only Guru could do that as the commish or whatever. Or do we temporarily move the draft to the message board in that case, until Guru or the respective managers update the site?

And, if I have someone elses's queue, even if I can't access the site, I can send Guru the pick via e-mail. And thanks to his little link above, I can see where we are at in the draft.

We probably should have explained this a little better since there are some new guys in this league. But it works out great. 14 interested, competitive managers and Kafenatid + Guru's tools make for a very smooth and expedited draft.

I will be around late night tonight, or early tomorrow.

Is there a need to leave a 10 man que after my pick, or should I be good until I get home. Since it is only the 2nd round, and should be an important pick, I would like to make it myself, or at least have it down to a 5 person que.

Doug, let me guess. Kafenatid didn't like when you tried to pick "Deuce Mcallister"?

That's because you spelled his name wrong. If you spell the guy's name right, the program will find it in the database and pull him up for you.

By the way, I was going to take Deuce if you had taken Edge. I think McCallister is ready to make up for his last 2 sub-par years. He should be Top 5 in RB scoring this season. Great pick.

MC - I was having problems logging on the site... not making my pick. So I was saying I must have set up my u/p combo for that site differently than I do for most other sites. Anyway, yeah, I'm pretty high on Deuce this year too. Not as high as I am on Priest, but then Priest comes with "extra requirements" which make drafting him a bit of a pain, still... not a bad problem to have. And my gut just tells me he'll stay healthy this year. That's the good thing about a large gut... it's easier to hear what it's saying to you.

Bonka, I think you have to spell it "What'choo talkin' bout, Willis?"

Friday morning before I leave I will check the status of the draft and either leave Guru my cell number to get ahold of me when it's my turn to draft or leave him a queue, all depending on how many picks are left before me. I'm probably leaving around 11:30 EST and won't have internet at my place until 3-5 (cable guy is scheduled for then). I'm bringing a laptop and will grab some wireless net elsewhere if need be though.

Drat. Would be nice instead of hitting refresh all the time to see where we're at. Especially when you're considering trades, etc... not necessarily just waiting for your pick.

Another odd thing is that even though I set my account preference to my local time, everything is still showing up EST on the site.

Slightly miffed Ender wouldn't leave a queue with someone when (a) he's on deck, (b) the person before him is actively posting and around, (c) he knows he won't be back for 5+ hours, and (d) a specific reminder/request for queue was posted by legge 4 minutes after his post in #73... but, *exhale*, it's really not that big of a deal.

Looks like he should get back a little bit before his 6 hour clock is up at least. It's early in the draft so just posting this as a friendly reminder for everyone so it doesn't become a pattern. Please leave a queue if you're on deck and leaving for a few hours.

I got your queue legge, thx.

Let me propose an alternate approach to loading rosters at Fanball. After you make a pick, please go to Fanball and add that player to your own roster.

I started adding a few players, but on a dialup connection, the process is slow and cumbersome. If each manager loads his own roster as we go, my workload will be significantly reduced - which is a good thing, IMHO.

You know, I just don't like the tone of my post. It doesn't read the way I feel. I do apologize for not having a queue ready. I should have. I won't bore you with the mundane details of my busy day, but I was so flustered when I actually did have a chance to get online and make my first pick that used what little time I had second guessing myself. If I had taken any longer my wife would have had my head.

I promise to have queues ready and not slow down the draft as I myself get pretty annoyed (which is mostly good old fashioned impatience on my part) when others bog it down.

Just so you guys know, when we do the draft rationales, if I have to post a placeholder post, I won't be able to edit it. For some reason my ID will not stay on this computer. The computer I used at work during the summer was fine, but this (my main) just will not store it correctly. I've reset it multiple times with no avail. I also just checked my cookies folder and don't see any cookie file for this site. I guess for some reason it's not saving it while every other site works fine? :/

With kafenatid draft down for us this will be the best way to track who has been drafted.

Back again. Good game for tribe fans, in spite of a one hour rain delay at the start.

Fred got our kafenatid draft going again, but there is still an apparent problem with the timer, as you may note that our average time per pick is negative, and our draft is currently projected to end in 1963. To avoid a similar foul up when the clock resumes on Sunday morning, I implemented a weekend clock pause, so the timer will not be operating on Sunday, at least until Fred can figure out why the time problem is occurring.

This does not mean the clock is off. It just means we will have to administer it manually for the time being, if needed.

I updated all of the picks from today, including Kev's pick of Kerry Collins (from his queue). I'm currently "on the clock", but may not pick until the morning. I have to digest all of the picks that have come since my last pick, and I'm not sure I can do that coherently at this hour.

A disappointing start on rationales, although weekends always tend to be choppy. I'll probably have to do some major placeholder work on that later today.

I finally made my pick this morning. I was hoping someone else would take Gates so I didn't have to decide. But as it turned out, I am the one who gets to take that risk. I still had to sleep on it, though.

The kafenated software won't allow me to remove the weekend draft pause while it is in effect. So the automated clock won't restart until tomorrow morning. However, we will continue to enforce the 6 hour time limit today if needed. Hopefully, that will not be the case.

Thanks for doing the grunt work on the rationales, Challenger. I was just heading over to do it myself, and saw you were on a roll. When we get far behind, it is impossible to get back on track unless someone goes on a placeholder rampage.

Everyone - please post either a rationale or a placeholder each time you make a pick. If you can, post the rationale first, and then make your pick. That way, the next picker doesn't have to wait to see if a rationale is coming. And if you are making someone else's pick from a queue, try to remember to post a rationale placeholder as well. If everyone is diligent, the process works well. But if we have a few slackers, things can snowball out of control.

I wish I played AthleticsGuy on week 8. He's got 3 of his top 4 draft picks on bye that week! =-) Could be a good strategy bye-week-wise... just punt a given bye week, and be near full strength the rest of the time. I'm guessing it wasn't a specific strategy, however. As it turns out I've got no bye week duplicates so far (across entire roster) though I hadn't really been monitoring it closely, it's just by chance... BoNkA or IAC are the other two teams still like me. Let's see who can last until round 9! =-p

Heading out for the night. Left a queue for 5.14 as well as rationale for 3.14 with Guru.

Doug, I wish I could say it was all part of some brilliant strategy. But the truth is I didn't notice my week 8 bye problem until after I had Harrison. Then I just forgot all about it when I drafted Coles!

I've already double shot myself in the foot..and in different weeks. Took Min QB and WR, which could be forgiven, had I not targeted a gamble in the 4th round for a RB (DeShaun Foster) who has same off week as my #1 pick, RB Dillon.

With 2 existing conflicts, I need to awaken the war room for the rest of the draft. Screwing up 1 week is not good, but screwing up two is bad...screw up the 3rd and we be seeing AAA next year.

I'll keep checking in, but it doesn't look good as I finally have to go to work tomorrow (first day of school for teachers here). I'll be headed for bed soon, but will be prepared to make my pick in the morning.

The 6 hr clock is in effect, correct? If so I will just pick no matter what in the morning. If not I have to wait 6 hrs from when?

Manning has been the consensus #1 QB taken in these RIFC drafts, but under this scoring system, Culpepper outscored him last year by 11 points . Culpepper does have more questions marks this year, such as the loss of Moss and his injury history, but was the loss of Moss enough to lower him down to #2?

from post 0 of this thread:

"If you know that you have pending time constraints, please post them in this thread. (e.g., "I'll be away until 6pm ET, so if my pick is due before then, you'll have to wait.") To the extent that you can alert everyone to potential availability issues, you can help others to plan their check-in times accordingly. That's simply good draft etiquette."

I sure wish I knew at 7:13 tonight that I could have gone on about my business, rather than having waited around for the pick that was never made.

You know, I think what it's doing is counting the two picks on the turn as if they are under a single 6-hour clock... dating back to pick 5.13. Even though pick 5.14 was traded to a different manager (me), it's still treating 5.14 and 6.01 as if they are consecutive picks by the same manager (IAC). Maybe it's related to the fact that site seems to trade the player selected rather than the pick itself (if you look at the draft grid, Ray Lewis shows up as a traded player, as if IAC had drafted him then traded him to me... although it does allow me to make the pick rather than having IAC do it for me... kinda strange).

I had a bad dream last night, by the way. I dreamt I WAY overslept, woke up and it was like noon, went to my computer to see if Guru had used my queue for 5.14... and instead found someone had been posting for me and we had zipped ahead to round 12 and I had a bunch of scrubs on my squad. There was more to it, but that was the fantasy football part of it (I was also getting chewed out for missing various appointments this morning, etc.) Speaking of various appointments, I'll be out for the next couple hours, but my pick is 11 away so it shouldn't be a major holdup if it gets to me before I return.

Well, Guru, looks like the Dysfunction-O's made for a nice weekend for you Indians types. That Friday night game was in the bag. I have no earthly idea why they trotted Bedard back out there in the 8th. Don't they pay Julio to pitch the 8th with a 3-run lead?

Local Tribe radio talk shows are practically orgasmic over the weekend series. They're not only talking about the wild card race, they're setting their sites on catching the White Sox.

Hard to imagine that one week ago, they got swept at home by the D-Rays.

My rationales will be posted immediately after my selections, so give me 10-15 minutes before jumping me with a placeholder. I know it's not a big deal, but when I post them and see that someone's jumped ahead and put up a placeholder for me, I feel retroactively rushed.

No, Guru, your instructions are to "post your (2 round lagged) comments at the time you make each pick."

I don't recall you ever being specific about doing it before drafting your players, and I searched through the three threads from this year, and nowhere in them is that guidance.

I don't have my rationales pre-written. I prefer to make my current selections first, then look back and reflect. But I guess I screwed up without knowing, so it won't happen again.

Ahem... from post 149:
Everyone - please post either a rationale or a placeholder each time you make a pick. If you can, post the rationale first, and then make your pick.
I realize that I may have overstated the case when I said that my instructions have always been to do it that way. But I did make that specific suggestion just yesterday when we got so far behind.

It's difficult to know if someone is working on a rationale or just forgot. If you are working on one after you have picked, perhaps a quick note in this thread to that effect would at least alert the next picker of your situation.

I (almost) always draft my rationale at the time I make my pick, so it's a simple matter to cut and paste when the pick is due.

I may be interested in swapping up in the 8th round. The most obvious exchange would be to swap back in the 9th (this isn't like early rounds where the quality drops off rapidly each round).

But if you are targeting a position in the 8th round, WR, QB, backup RB, whatever... and have multiple players you are indifferent between, then slide down a few picks in round 8 and you'll still get one of your guys... essentially paying nothing in order to slide up next round.

If this appeals to anyone, drop me an email. Obviously you don't have to decide until your pick is on the clock, but at least let me know if you think it's a possibility so I can be prepared to accept/deny when the time comes.

Doug, I feel you're referring to how I have been drafting......Craphonso!!! :>( <<<<<< refers to my drafting

My draft picks really have no rationale to them since Holmes......Ok, Gonzo might be ok. Can't I start putting down, "Because I felt like it!"???

2 more legge's rationales until I make his "Biggest surprise" mentioning with that Williams pick. Hope he bold's it for me!!

Just watching Nightline, a reporter asks a kid what steroids are. Kid answered, "They're illegal drugs what baseball players take." I stop listening after that as I was laughing to hard. Switch the channel over to "Becker".

My rationales will be posted immediately after my selections, so give me 10-15 minutes before jumping me with a placeholder. huuuhhhh?!!? Sounds like a Yogism (Sorry Sludge)

yeah...well to follow the draft rater..or to follow your intuition.

I'm sorry I misrepresented the time before drafting, but as I pondered the above question (went with intuition), my oldest daughter called as she was driving back to San Antonio from Corpus Christi after attending the "viewing" of the closed casket of her daughter's (my grandaughter) baby sitter during the time of my daughter's divorce a year or so ago, a 20 year old girl who was found murdered, shot and mutilated just off the Univ. Texas campus. My daughter needed an ear and some love, and bottom line, that's what dad's are for. Son's are fun, but daughters are forever.

So much for tonighht's soap opera....but think about it..if you haven't told some one you love 'em recently, don't wait, fate can forever steal the opportunity we have right now. Nobody is getting out of this thing alive...but damn, I hate to leave things unsaid.

We never said "I love you" much growing up. No real harm done as we all understood it implicitly. Now that I am father myself I have made sure that saying it is an everyday affair. Friday is still several days away, but it will be a difficult one for me with potential implications for the whole league.

On Friday, I'll be driving back from Ohio to Connecticut, and on the road from approx. 9am until 8pm. During that time, I will be reachable by cell phone, but I will have no internet connectivity.

I'll do my best to set up a queue in advance, although, depending on my position at the time I leave, I may need/want a phone call to confirm the intervening developments before authorizing the trigger-pulling. I'll also need to have someone who I can designate as an alternate picker for my team.

It also means I will not be available to take queues from anyone else on that day. If you have been relying on me for that, you will need to make alternate arrangements, including designating that person in advance at kafenatid, if necessary.

Obviously, a lot will happen between now and then. But since this will impact several of you - particularly those who rely on me as your backup - I thought an early alert was appropriate.

Rationale:

6.04 Chris Chambers, WR, MIA

Like I said in my Crumpler rationale, if Chambers didn't fall to me here, I would of been upset with my drafting.

Through 5 rounds, I still didn't have a WR; it seemed like the WR's I targeted each round would go right before my pick, so, I just kept holding off. Well, I figured I needed to start with a solid WR by round 6: and took Chambers. He never has a good QB throwing him the ball, but he always puts up good numbers. In 2004, Chambers was good for 900 yds and 7 TD's, and he had no running game.

In 2003, when he had a running game, he put up 960 yards and 11 TD's. With the running game improved in 2005, I expect over 1000 yards and 10 TD's. Not bad for a 6th round pick.

Other people I debated on taking: Muhammed, Mason, Burress (who I got 20 picks later)

6th round thoughts:

Best Values: Jimmy Smith, Mason, Muhammed, and Chambers. All are the un-questioned, good #1 WR's for their teams and should not suffer too much just because of lack of solid QB's.

Biggest surprise: New England D at 6.03. I wasn't expecting them to go as the 1st defense off the board or go that early.

6.03 New England, DEF

I tried to trade this pick as I had NE D targeted for a late 6th round pick. Undaunted by reaching a bit, I like a plug and play D as it frees up a roster spot. NE fits the bill. Hell, I would even start them against Indy. I knew that NE and BAL would be gone by 7.11 – these two are considerably above the pack of about 9 that are very similar. Bill is the master and the fan in me wanted to get doubly excited every time they stymied another opponent or forced Manning into 4 picks. I considered a WR and Suggs here. Was very happy that Suggs fell to me at 7.11.

MC trades up to get his 5th RB (and taking a handcuff from me!). I am looking forward to the rationale.

I debated on taking Moore at 8.04, but I thought Moulds was was more valuable to my team and that Moore may fall back down to me.

I'm generally available for queues, phone, etc. and what not until Sept. 4th... then I may or may not be leaving the country for a few days (to be determined).

As I recall, MC was actively swiping handcuffs from a lot of us last year. I guess he's at it again!

Glad I have 2 starting RBs. Although my backup for those bye weeks is a little iffy. Glad we have a RB vacuum with us to make it even harder :P

If you avoid the top running backs in the early rounds, you won't have anyone stealing your handcuffs

I apologize for mentioning an undrafted player in my last rationale. For some reason I had thought he was taken already and didn't think twice.

Wow, nice trade MC! Traded up to snatch a rb from Guru. Leaves me wondering if Guru was even eyeing a rb there.

Whoa, now. I have a great reason for taking every one of those guys. You'll have to wait until I get my rationales up, but I think the 5 I have now are better than the stable I had last season. I mean, that's saying something. Last year's lineup included Barlow, Henry, Wheatley and several other guys on the verge of retiring from the NFL.

Nice pick Guru. Had my eye on him for a while, but wasn't ready to pull the trigger for a couple more rounds. Great value.

Terrence McGee kicks ass in Madden.

;-)

Was just checking out the grid. If Hasselbeck had slipped to GoatLocker at 7.09 I would've REALLY REALLY liked his team. Can't wait to read the Palmer rationale....I suppose he is primed to improve, and he does have a good pair of receivers and a good RB, but still a curious choice.

I like your team too leggestand. Solid skill position players (Moulds was a steal, IMO). Should be interesting to see if lack of top flight IDP or team defense will come back to bite you.

Long queue sent to Doug for my next two picks. If for some reason we get 11.11 by tomorrow night, please wait for me to get back around 9:30pm est.

Hopefully you can follow my queue, Doug, since it has a couple scenarios. Thanks.

I am going to call it a night, we've been stalled a couple hours and 5 picks to get to me.

I received zero response to post 330. W/O some help the draft is doomed to time out on each of my picks after tomorrow afternoon.

Sorry for the delay. I had a root canal today and then 3 beers at dinner knocked me way out until TB called me to talk RIBC.

Great job taking my intented target this round, Guru. I suppose that makes up for last season.

6.10 Mike Anderson, RB, DEN
Did I just draft Denver’s starting tailback in the 6th round? Everyone knows that the Broncos churn out 1,000-yard-backs like Ben Affleck does expensive Hollywood clunkers. If Anderson, who is #1 on the Denver depth chart, stays there for at least half the season, this pick is worth the price. I honestly wanted to wait until the 9th round or so to take him, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized
A. Tatum Bell has demonstrated a slight history of injury.
B. Mike Anderson has demonstrated a strong history of success.
And yes, I backed myself into a corner by not taking a second RB until round 5. Guru and I have similar plans obviously.
However, I might have drafted Denver’s starting tailback in the 6th round.

7.06 Travis Henry, RB, TEN
I’m the President of his fan club; I had to take him.

You know he is a good RB. I don’t need to convince you. How healthy will Chris Brown be this season? That’s the only issue with Henry. If Brown starts 16 games, I have a third down back with little to no upside. If Chris Brown gets injured again, as he has throughout college and his pro career, I have another starting RB. And I’ll remind everyone of Henry’s heroic 2003 campaign in which he rushed for 1356 yards and 10 TD’s, despite having a broken leg for half the season.

McGahee’s caddy indeed.

Doug

Thanks. I'll need to know your phone number to call you..and an e-mail address to send my phone number. I think you should send your phone number by e-mail, which is why I have been posting my e-mail address in the e-mail box the past few postings.

Last time I published on line I started receiving p/c from car dealerships and financial planners from all around the country, as some "friend" entered my number in a data dispersal system requesting their services etc.
