Subject: RIFC 2005: Draft Discussion #2

Time for a new thread. Good progress in the draft so far. We're on pace to finish in plenty of time.

BTW, speaking of a good pace...

My son and I played 18 holes this morning in 2:40! Teed off at 7:05, finished at 9:45. Regulation par 72 course. We were essentially the first group out, and never looked back.

Wish my score was as efficient. :-(

Should I be leaving a 10 man que? It seems pretty large at this point.

I shouldn't be too late tonight. Home around the usual time. I will make sure the first thing I do is check into the draft.

Well, if there's one or two guys in particular you know you want, leave a short queue and if they fall we'll take them for you, otherwise we'll wait your return (assuming it gets to your pick before you return). But if nobody stands out as your top 1-3 picks or so right now, or you just want to wait to see how the other picks go first, then don't sweat it. =-)

If IAC is around we'll make the turn. If he's not I'll likely have to wait until after school.

You know, I don't really consider myself a homer, because I don't handcuff myself to a team when drafting. However, I never quite realized how much being able to root for a guy mattered to me until this draft. I'll say more when we recap the draft, but drafting guys I like is more important to me than I would have predicted. It may be a flaw, but I seem to have decent success from year to year (almost always in the playoffs, though last year Serious Biz was a Disaster).

You know, it's true. And in Fantasy sports it really hurts. I dont' draft Yankees, never pick them up and anyone playing against the Red Sox gets to sit. Gotta have my real priorities straight. Just call me fanboy!

Im not so bad in Football...or so I thought. I mean I took NE and I do like Vick - besides that, I could care less.

Oh, sorry bout the rationale, the whole trade thing has me thrown for a loop.

I just made you a designated picker so when Guru isn't around, I can send you my picks if they come up. Usually from about 7 to 4 Central I can't actually pick, although I follow the draft progress. I always know who I want when it's my turn.

Showing unbridled restraint, The Guru hides in the bushes for 10 rounds before snapping up Dante Hall. I applaude you restraint Dave. (I had round 4 in the pool.) Cliff probably had the winning round, but he has been working way to hard to notice)

(FYI..a couple seasons back in a league that over rated kick return performances, Hall helped The Guru destroy everyone in the regular season. As commissioner of the league, I got the red a$$ for scheduling a three round playoff tournament to begin in week 16...ahh, those were the days)

#36, you need to start a DL every week.

That's not true. You could take a 0 for the position. But the starting lineup includes a DL.

Guru, what happens if you leave the DL slot (or any slot) blank? Do you get a 0 for the whole team score for that week? I thought you could just leave a spot empty.

I have been posting placeholders a lot today so we can try to stay up with the picking pace. I don't mind doing it, but I guess it can't hurt to remind people to
Post a Placeholder in the Rationale Thread immediately after your pick on Kafenatid.

Or, preferably, immediately BEFORE your pick on Kafenatid.

I'm pretty certain your whole team gets a 0 if you don't field a full roster. It doesn't matter if your DL is injured, or on bye, or anything... but you need to have one on your roster plugged into your active DL slot in order for your lineup to be valid. Same goes for all other active positions. You must have at least 3 WRs, 1K, 2 RBs, a flex IDP, etc.

Sent queue to Guru and Challenger for 12.11 since I'm west coast and probably won't be up until 10am EST. It depends how loud the roosters are tomorrow. Yep, we sure have a lot of roosters here in LA... or at least we would if "roosters" was generally accepted as a euphamism for "breast implants", but I don't think it is. Not yet. We could start it though. I'm sure it would catch on. We'd be trendsetters. "Nice roosters". Has a catchy ring to it, don't you think? *sigh* Clearly I'm sleep deprived...

Well, he was a DL in college. And since he hasn't played in the NFL yet, they probably just list the rookies where they played college ball. Unless the team that drafted them made a point of taking them as a specific position different from what they are known for. Eric Crouch comes to mind.

Just a heads up... the word from Fanball is that players like Ware (including a couple that come to mind who nobody has drafted yet) and considered "tweeners" are able to play two positions (in real life, not fantasy). They have to be listed at a given position (such as DL in Ware's case) but that may or may not change prior to the season (I'm assuming if it becomes obvious to them that he's an LB, then he'll get switched, but if there is any ambiguity then they'll leave him as-is). Once the season begins, that's probably the position he will remain at for the entire season (I'm abusing parentheses and figured I'd throw one in this last sentence for good measure).

Actually when Dallas is in their 3-4 defense, Ware plays LB. When the shifts to their 4-3 defense, Ware is a DE. I just read Dallas may be playing more the 4-3 than orginally planned due to some personnel concerns, an injury and also a attempt to get one certain player on the field more. If this holds true Ware will be DE more and the selection is not as good as orginally believed.

LOL at Doug's McNair write-up. That's damn funny. And FWIW, I am also a big McNair fan. We're talking about the co-MVP from just 2 seasons back. Last season he was hurt. Not much you can do about that. But McNair was one guy I had hoped to land late and it just didn't work out. I knew someone would get him later than he should go, though.

I contacted them... wanted to find out how set their positional designations are. I have someone in mind and wanted to know the scoop, although he's a bit of a scrub given the shallow IDP depth of this league, so it's probably moot. Still, wanted to know my options. Fanball wrote...

[Player] and other players like him are able to play two positions. He is listed as DL for now and may or may not be changed before the season begins. Whatever position he is listed at when the season begins is most likely how we will list him and others like him in the "tweener" position throughout the season. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Challenger - so I put off my 2nd QB selection, Griese, for 4 picks. Gone!!

Hehe... I actually had Griese slotted to fall a bit further down the QB ladder and almost put off selecting my 2nd QB hoping that Griese would make it all the way back around. But then I figured, who am I kidding? Favre will be throwing passes while leaning on a walker this year, and with this group, somebody out there sees the potential value of Griese.

I'm actually pretty happy with my last two picks, which is something I never feel in late rounds when we get close to scraping the bottom.

Interesting........I was playing around in Fanball and decided to set my starting lineup and Fanball won't let me unless I have all 13 starting positions selected.

1. Cannot start less than 1 Linebacker. Currently selected: 0
2. Cannot start less than 1 Defensive Back. Currently selected: 0

Your starting lineup has NOT been updated.
Please correct the roster error and resubmit your lineup.

So essentially my starting lineup is blank at all positions....until I draft and fill those those remaining 2 postions. Don't rememeber it happening like this last year.

It operated that way last year as well. The only way to get an empty position was to trade away (or drop) someone after your lineup was set.

I'm not sure what would have happened in that situation, but I'll bet it was a zero for the team.

Some of you guys are doing well at keeping your Fanball rosters up to date. Thanks.

Some of you are not - particularly Ender, who shows only 2 players so far.

Please get your rosters caught up. As we approach the later rounds, this can be a big help in keeping track of available players.

I'm pretty sure I have no idea of what I'm doing at this point.

But I'd expect picks at this stage of the draft to be more unpredictable.

When debating my 15.05 pick, it came down to Bledsoe or a tight end, and the two TE's I considered were L.J. Smith (who I took) and Chris Cooley. So I'm surprised to see that next two picks were Bledsoe and Cooley.

Some guys I thought would last longer than they did: Ware, Davenport, Danny Clark, Kevin Curtis, and Dominic Rhodes.

On the flipside, I just noticed that Delhomme went at 10.02. That could be the steal of this draft if he plays as well as some expect. I think he's certainly a Top 10 QB by season's end. I would have loved to have had him as my QB2, but I got wrapped up in my own RB run.

I agree, Doug. You, MC, Ender, Guru, and maybe a couple others have gotten a few chuckles out of me with some of the more recent rationales. For me, it really adds another level of enjoyment to this and the qualifier leagues. Too bad that we can't get everyone to participate in my current league.

I am not a big fan of AAA and AA level leagues. I think Guru should select people who he believes deserve an "invitation" with winning or placing at the top of qualifying leagues factored in. Toss in reliability to make picks in a timely manner, posting rationales, and leaving queues or communicating with league-mates when extended absences are going to occur.

I hear your frustration TB. I tried baseball last year and sucked, but my leaguemates were alright. I thought about giving it another go this year, but baseball just isn't my sport, and I didn't want to be mired in AA. =-(

One thing I forgot to mention in my round 13 rationale is that I have a good friend who's nickname is "Sams". She's got a wicked sense of humor... we share lots of self-deprecating and R-rated jokes with each other. So now all season long I'm going to snicker like an adolescent whenever I look at my RIFC lineup and see the name "BJ Sams"...

I have to leave by 4:15pm, and may not be home until 8pm or so. (10 holes [9 with clubs, one in the clubhouse] weather permitting - and the weather may not permit).

GL doesn't time out until about 4:30. In the past, he's used a lot of his time allotment, but hasn't yet completely timed out, so hopefully he'll make it back.

This is all relevant because I have Kev's queue. If Goat picks before I leave, I can make the next 2 picks quickly. But if he times out, I won't be around to pick from Kevin's queue. I can send a queue for my own pick to Doug, but I don't know that anyone else can make Kev's pick. Of course, by that time, Kev may be able to make his own pick.

Well, yes. But if I really wanted to handcuff LT, I'd have to draft the entire SD backfield. He's nowhere near a lock on getting a significant amount of the carries should LT go down even though he is listed 2nd on the depth chart. I suspect there'll be a running-back-by-committee should LT go down. But I'm basically writing my rationale right now so I'll be quiet now.

LOL... I don't know where you get that idea from. I've got Turner in a dynasty league because I fully expect him to be the workhorse if LT goes down... or else a starting RB on another team within a few years. Correction... I had Turner on my squad for the past year and change, but traded him yesterday for Matt Jones (to the owner who has LT). I similarly developed Lamont Jordan (who I paried with Andre Johnson to trade for Randy Moss). I've got another RB who's in a situation much like Lamont Jordan was last year (actually, the exact same situation)... basically he's just biding his time until he's a starter. Always pays to have at least one in the pipeline in that league. =-)

Actually, Doug, after doing a bit more reading, it appears that my comments were a bit premature. I wasn't aware, for example, that they released Chatman OVER A MONTH AGO! Sheesh. Has my internet search kung fu been going downhill or what? That basically leaves Sproles as his only competition. I still expect they'll split time, but I have to agree with you that he'll get the bulk of the carries. What was that someone said earlier about not knowing what they're doing? Just wait until you read my real rationale. :)

It's highly unlikely that the queue will be depleted at this point, as their are 8 names in it, and only 8 posible players can come off the board before my picks. I could have dug for 2 more names... but it's getting really late.

I'm surprised Goatlocker didn't show up overnight. That's of some concern.

I never received a queue from I_A_C either. Although I am able to make picks for any team, unless you authorize me as a designated picker, I don't automatically receive your queue emails.

Hopefully, MC got the queue.

I have it, but since I'm back to work today (Hurricane missed us by a good margin, although some folks to the west weren't so lucky) I will have to e-mail Guru with the picks when it's IAC's turn. Call me "Middleman".

Yeah I wonder where the heck GoatLocker is. He lives in California, so no natural disasters this week. Maybe he just had to work all day and night Monday.

guru - i was just comparing AAA#2 rules setup to the PDF file you posted.

you have it set like this:

Offensive Players and
Team Defenses get the following points:
Award 6.00 points for kickoff return touchdowns in the range of 0 to 110.

Offensive Players and
Team Defenses get the following points:
Award 6.00 points for punt return touchdowns in the range of 0 to 110.

is this right? I had our league set so that only offense players get credit for these (when they say offensive players, I think that includes IDP's). just want to make sure.

I'm pretty sure that scoring provision is unchanged from last season. Traditionally, "team defense" often means "team defense and special teams". So I guess that was the rationale.

ok - i just want to make sure we're set up the same way.

so if dante hall runs a kickoff back for a td, then KC's team defense gets 6 points?

I'll go change our league setup on that then.

I sure hope Goatlocker returns before his current clock expires. And I obviously hope that nothing bad has happened.

But, for the sake of preparation, assume that he times out again (at 5:22pm ET this afternoon).

We have several possible courses of action we can take:
  1. We can follow the rules and move the draft ahead to the next picker. Goatlocker's picks for rounds 18 & 19 will be in arrears.
  2. We can suspend the draft. Since we are running ahead of schedule, we could even afford to wait an extra day or more without negatively impacting the season.
  3. We could assign him some players and then move on.
Last year, when this situation occurred (it was Goatlocker last year as well), the first two picks were skipped. After every other team had made two picks, we assigned him Terrell Owens as Tiki Barber as the consensus top players remaining. We feared that deferring his top two picks for even longer risked terminal damage to his team.

At this point, it is hard to make a case that his team suffers irreparable harm even if he misses all of his remining picks. He already has players to complete a valid lineup, so his last four picks are probably bench players to start the season. I doubt if "consensus" picks even exist at this stage of the draft.

Based on all of this, I think I'd suggest we simply follow the rules and march on, if the situation arises. If he lived in the southeast, I'd be more inclined to lean toward a different approach on the assumption that the delay was weather related. But he doesn't, and given his history, I'd say we simply go on.

However, I am certainly open to contrary feedback.

Are you open to non-contrary feedback as well? I agree it is not obvious what position he would draft at this point, and even then WHO at any given position. I've got the same feeling about my picks as well (see 17.04 rationale)... I could skip my remaining picks and end up with the same players I would have drafted anyway (or at least similar ones). It's not analagous to missing rounds 1 and 2. Let's just move on and hope for the best for GL, both fantasy-wise and RL-wise (if it comes to that point).

I've tried to call Cliff a couple times today with no luck, just voice mail. He does travel for business and may be w/o internet access or it may be something not that simple.

It wouldn't bother me if we would suspend for 24 hours as long as we finish before the weekend. (Never seen a draft go so well on weekends as this has, but still....)

Note to self: for next year (or the next Invitational league draft), I should probably institute a rule that once a manager times out, he loses the clock for subsequent picks until he makes up the skipped picks.

Either that, or we should have a cumulative clock. That would be more of an administrative hassle, though, as it would have to be manually monitored and enforced.

I'll allow the clock for GL to run its course for this pick. However, in the event that he is still absent for his round 20 pick, I'll probably just skip it immediately and move the draft along. It's unfair to the rest of the managers to have to repeatedly stare at a frozen draft board.

Just have something like a 6 hour clock for the initial opportunity, then a 30 minute (or 15 minute, or whatever) clock for all subsequent opportunities for the pick. KKB, you listening? Might be a good thing to implement.

My DP's will see that there is only 1 player in my Round 21 queue. If he is there, draft him. If not, just skip me (if possible). I am only 3 picks from the end, so, I don't mind just picking up a free agent early next week, especially since it is just going to be a backup.

Planning ahead, since we are nearing the end of the draft. As you may recall...
"at the end of the draft, all undrafted players are placed on waivers for 2 days, during which time waiver claims can be submitted. The priority order for preseason waiver claims is the reverse of the random draw for selecting draft order."
Thus the priority order for post draft waiver claims will be:

1 Bandos
2 Taxman
3 Doug
4 Ender
5 GoatLocker
6 Guru
7 Bonka
8 Mötley Crüe
9 Leggestand
10 Kev
11 Challenger
12 I_AM_CANADIAN
13 Athletics Guy
14 Sludge

The Fanball system will not adminster this process, so we will need to do it manually.

The 48 hour waiver period will not begin until all rosters have been filled at Fanball. I will announce when this period starts. At that time, all add/drop roster transactions will be temporarily frozen. If you wish to place a waiver claim for an undrafted player, you will need to submit your claim to me via email.

It's funny, AG. I was talking to TB (a big Raiders fan that usually knows about the other Bay area fans) and I asked him if he thought you'd take Jolley. I thought you would because of the Raiders connection. He said he didn't know.

Hey, I'm a Raiders fan, and I passed on Curry to take Matt Jones... so we aren't ALL predictable. I need to leave for a few hours. I'm going to post my last 3 rationales, including one for the pick I haven't made yet. I know, breakin' the rules. I'm a hoodlum and a Raider fan, what can I say? The odds that Challenger would even remotely consider my pick are slim... particularly since he still needs to fill his Flex IDP slot. So I don't think I'm messing anything up by doing this. It's been a swell draft.

Ouch... didn't realize Taxman had so much bye week issues. That's going to hurt a little.

20.11 Bryan Scott, DB, ATL

I had Scott ranked in the top couple of DB’s but I see he made the switch to FS from SS. Not sure what that will do to his close to 100 tackles. I figure I can use him to spell both LB as a flex and my DB. We will see how it works as a roster efficiency move.

21.12 Marcus Robinson, WR, MIN

Minnesota is supposed to be good, right? Daunte, ok too? Well, his bye week sucks which is why I didn’t draft Marcus rounds ago but in the 21st round the WR2 for Minny being available is puzzling. In Chicago he was not a factor as their QB’s kinda sucked. The 21 st round seems like a good round for this kind of high upside pick/ he might be dropped soon to fill bye issues.

I think Motley got me confused with Kev in his recap. I didn't take Pitt in the 8th round. If you'd like to give them to me in exchange for the Chiefs, I'd be glad to do so. I'd have all Pennsylvania defenses(I live in PA).

I'll eventually get a recap done. I'll get to criticize myself for the RB and WR groups I drafted and could kill my season.

Big 3!?!? I thought I had a Big 2!?!? And a small-but-servicable 1 to go along with...

Ah well, if the unlikely scenario occurs that one of my studs suffers a 5-week-or-more injury while you've simultaneously got 3+ starters "tearing it up for their respective teams", I shall count myself lucky that I still retain my appendix, and thus can include it in my offer it to satisfy the minor bodily organ requirement... I think it qualifies. I didn't read the fine print though.

Athletics Guy, At QB, I selected Tom Brady. The fantasy manager in me says "This is great!" The Raiders fan says "Why?!" I don't know how I can root for this guy every week. I guess if he helps me win my matchups, I'll be happy. And if he stinks it up real bad, I'll be happy too. So, it's a win/win situation.

LOL- I think I am going to just copy and paste that into my draft recap. I still shake my head left and right that I drafted Brady as my starting QB. It was a fumble.

19.13 Al Wilson LB DEN
I felt compelled to have a 3rd LB at this point. I was looking for a guy who gets his share of tackles. Big Al's name stuck out to me because he was solely responsible for one of my losses in another league last year. He had a monster game with a TD return (on a Monday night IIRC), it was absolute torture watching him get the pick and score.

20.02 Josh Brown K SEA IIRC I drafted Jeffy last season as well. I have no particular affinity towards him. It's just that if you wait forever to take a kicker and your one rule is that they have to play in a dome your likely to end up with him I guess.

21.13 Rosevelt Colvin LB NE
I was at school. My lists were at home. Colvin went to Purdue. That about sums it up. OK, OK, OK the thought that he may step it up a notch this year with a couple holes in the NE D did pass threw my mind, but that was pretty much a manufactured reason. I just thought it would be cool to have a Boilermaker on both sides of the ball.

I type these up and I just shake my head and laugh. Not because I think I'm a hilarious kind of guy, but because I marvel at how some of you guys can come up with actual analysis and real thought for guys taken beyond the say 17th round. I know, Motley, you took Gates in the 18th round last year (how many times have you slipped that into one of these rationales, we GET it ;)

LOL TB, that was a tough pick for me. I know how you feel. As much as I love the Raiders, I think Brady is going to have a HUGE game against our defense in the season opener. Hopefully, it will be something like Oakland 42 New England 35. That would be a nice beginning for the Moss Era. :)

Yeah, I waltzed in and out of threads calling myself "for leggestand" one whole day last week. As if that doesn't sound totally gay.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. But I'm not gay, and I'm not for leggestand.

Rather than haranguing Bandos about it, I simply added the 6 missing players to his roster. It now appears that all rosters are full (except for leggestand, who skipped one pick.)

As such, I have now locked out the ability to pick up free agents. If you notice an incorrect player on your roster, please notify me ASAP, and I'll make the substitution.

The list of free agents at Fanball should therefore be accurate. If you want to claim one of those players as part of the post-draft claiming process, you must send me an email stating the player to be added, and the player to be released. The priority order for this process is listed in post 290. I must receive your claim by midnight, Sunday, Sept. 4th.

If there are any claims, I will process them early Monday morning (Sept. 5th). At that time, I will re-enable everyone's ability to pick up free agents on a first come, first served basis. The claim priorities, after adjustment for any awarded claims, will be applied to any waiver claims for the rest of the week. Waiver claims would only be applied to any players who are dropped during the week.

It's actually a fellow teachers due to the server trouble, but it'll work.

I just tried it and it's throwing back any page with a .exe extension. Thanks again for all the help guys. It's a shame I can't get it done. I'm confident in my ability to draft without it, but it would have been a help to our commish to track all the teams easily.

Since I skipped my last pick, am I putting a waiver claim in for someone if I want to drop "Skip Pick?" If so, I will wait until everyone is a free agent to add a player.

The following three claims were processed this morning:

Motley: waive RB Ciatrick Fason MIN and pick up PK Todd Peterson ATL

Bandos: waive Marcus Robinson, WR, MIN and pick up Ben Watson, TE, NE

BoNkA: waive David Boston, WR, MIA and pick up Marty Booker, WR, MIA

You should now be able to add/drop players. It's not clear whether dropped players will go on waivers this week (prior to the start of the season) or not. I guess will find out if/when someone is dropped. (It may be that waivers start after the first lockout.)

I can't find any link to set up waiver priorities or to claim players, which causes me to suspect that this feature may not activate until after the first freeze.

I suppose that we should administer it manually, although I rechecked our league settings, and dropped players in the preseason are supposed to go on waivers. I'll submit a ticket to see what's up.

Meanwhile, if you want to claim a dropped player, send me an email.

Fanball responded that the waiver system is not activated until after the first weekend.

I did, however, code up the rules to say that during the preseason, dropped players may not be added for 48 hours. So, supposedly, if you try to add a dropped player during the first 48 hours after he is dropped, you will be prevented from doing so.

Assuming this is true, send me an email if you want to claim one of these players, and I will administer manually.
