15.01 Sean Taylor, DB, Was
Another riveting rationale. I'm trying to fill out my starters (or at least have a warm body for every starting slot) at this point. I barely have that after Bettis's injury which I just read about today. Oh well. Taylor was at the top of available DBs in the myriad rankings that I took a peek at. Unlike Spikes and Jason Taylor, who I've actually heard of and have seen play, Sean is a no-name to me. Ahhh... IDPs.

15.02 Sebastian Janikowski, K, OAK
Finally, I drafted my first Oakland Raiders player. Go Raiders! Don't mistake this for a homer pick though. With the acquistions the Raiders have made in the offseason, this team will be scoring a ton of points. And Sebastian Janikowski will definitely benefit from that. While I wouldn't rank him above Mike Vanderjagt, Janikowski certainly has a good chance to be the #1 points producer among kickers.

15.03 Bobby Engram, WR, Sea
I've targeted Engram for the last 3-4 rds simply because he's moved up to #2 wideout for the Seahawks and as added bonus looks to be the punt returner.

15.04 Stephen Davis, RB, Car
With 4 RB’s already, missing a kicker, wr4, dl etc., what was I thinking drafting a guy who is listed 4th on the Panthers depth chart. Well, as far as I can tell, Davis will be available in week 1, when healthy he rushes for 1400 yds and the coaches have been non-committal at best, from what I have read. Maybe there is more out there as he fell to the 15th round. Still, K and DL can wait. There is huge upside to this pick. Hey, he took his entire posse to Vegas (like 27 guys), he must still think he has something left in the tank at 30.

15.05 L.J. Smith, TE, Phi
I have pick15.05 (instead of 15.07) as my "carrot" for swapping 8th and 9th round picks with Motley Crue. As it turned out, I guess I got my "reward" in the 9th round by taking Randle El away from Motley. Frankly, I can't find any player that I think I'm going to "scoop" with this pick.
There are two ways to deal with my RB dilemma. I can use a bunch of bench slots to take backup RBs and hope to hit paydirt. Or, I can punt and try to shore up my RB corps via trade or an opportunistic F/A pickup. I think the latter offers more potential, as the odds of getting the right backup RB seem pretty long at this juncture.
So, assuming I abandon my RB problem (at least I have 2 active bodies to start each week), what's my priority? Including this pick, I have 7 slots to go. Two of those will be for a PK and DL. One will be for a TE to start in week #1, since Gates will not play until week #2. One will be for a backup QB. That leaves three other bench slots to work with. Perhaps if I can find a gem in the rough, I can trade a starter for a better RB.
Don’t ask me how L.J. Smith fits this bill. With Chad Lewis gone, he should be "the man" at TE for Philly. Many ranking services have him as a top 10 TE (although admittedly closer to 10). I'll use him for week #1 and then decide what to do with him.
(I almost took Bledsoe here, so it was interesting to see BoNkA pick him right after me)

15.06 Drew Bledsoe, QB, DAL I wanted to pick up a backup QB and had my eyes on Bledsoe this round. I think the change of teams (and being reunited with Parcells) may help him out and he can hopefully get his numbers back up. I'm not expecting his old form, but I do expect him to be a solid QB I have no problems with playing whenever I need to.

15.07 Chris Cooley, TE, WAS
Over the last 6 games of 2004, Cooley averaged 4 catches for 33 yards and scored 3 TD's. That's not wildly remarkable, but consider that only 4 TE's scored more TD's than Cooley last season. He was a rookie and seemed to get better as the season went on. My feeling is that he will be a Top 12 TE this season. Big whoop, I suppose, but if you don't have Gates, Gonzo, or Witten you take what you get. After having Gates AND Gonzo last season, I will suck it up and play "crappy TE roulette" in `05.

15.08 Adam “The Pirate” Archuleta, DB, St Louis Rams Not only is Archuleta a pirate, but he is the main man on a defense that should be on the field a ton this year, which should lead to a lot of tackles, and hopefully, a lot of big plays. I was going to take him 2 rounds ago, but saw more value with Arrington, and then felt he could slip once again. With needing to start a DB this year, I’m happy with the pirate. My goal was to continue what led me to success last year- building a very solid defensive unit. With Pittsburgh’s Team D, Peppers, Brooking, Arrington, and the pirate, I feel I have done that.

15.09 Patrick Ramsey, QB, Was
Hope I don't end up being as upset with myself over this pick as I currently am.
Just not real happy with it, but I needed a back up QB and believe he does have the potential to put up some numbers.
So, guess this is more of a wing and a prayer pick.

15.10 Vernand Morency, RB, Hou
Having been annointed as first-in-line to replace Domminick Davis when (not if) he goes down, I jumped on this 25 yr old rookie out of OK State. I wanted to acquire a sizable stable of RB and WR during the draft. Many of the bottom teams raced into the RIBC playoffs last year based on in season pickups of reserves, ergo, my late round draft picks will focus on unknown (at the pro level) and talented, but unproven players in an attempt to grab reserves that might see some playing time during the season.

15.11 Jacksonville Defense
This was a queue pick that I didn't really think I would get, but threw them on there anyhow (I thought Engram was going to make it). After getting them and looking up the bye week, they have the same bye as my #1 defense. Shocking.
What I like about the Jags: they play SF and Houston in Weeks 15 and 16, so, if I make the playoffs, this is not a bad D to have. Also, the Jags were 15th in Team D in 2004, but scored ZERO TD's on D/ST (only other team to "accomplish" that were the Cowboys). If they scored the league average of 3 TD's, they end up as a top 10 Defense. I'll take 'em as a backup.
15th Round thoughts:
Best Value - Putzier at 15.13. I think he could easily end up a top 10 TE. Stephen Davis at 15.04. If healthy, could be the starter in Carolina.
Biggest surprise - Patrick Ramsey at 15.09. I know the QB's pickings were slim, but living in DC, I get to see first hand how bad Ramsey is.

15.12 – Michael Boulware, DB, SEA
Just like Gibril Wilson, his 2004 season stats don’t tell the story. He started the season playing solely in nickel and dime formations, but was promoted to starter at SS for the final 5 games, and if you multiply those 5 games by three (to estimate a full season) you get 108 solos, 18 assists, 3 sacks, 3 INTs, 6 PDs… similar fantasy numbers to what I predict for Gibril and other top DBs. I’ve actually been adding both of these guys in most of my drafts this year, figuring at least one of them will live up to the billing. So now, between my 2 LBs and these 2 DBs, I should now be covered all season long with studly production from my LB, DB, and flex IDP slots.

15.13 Jeb Putzier TE DEN
I waited and waited to grab my least favorite position. I was going to take LJ Smith if he was around and waited 1 round to many for that. Putzier was actually reasonably high on my list and fell to me this far down. He's no Shannon Sharpe, but he is a Denver TE. Stephen Alexander is around, but I've owned Stephen Alexander before and I know I don't have much to fear from him.

15.14 Marcel Shipp, RB, ARI I needed another RB backup, because the situation in Miami doesn't feel safe. Shipp is another "proven" backup for a rookie this season, and may take over the starting job at some point. His YPC so far in pre-season has been excellent.
16.01 Edgerton Hartwell, LB, ATL Already a good IDP player, Hartwell's #s are expcted to show a favorable increase with the move to Atlanta. I've seen a wide variety of rankings on him from 10th to 30th LB. Somewhere in the middle would be fine.

16.03 Matt Stover, PK, Bal
When I passed on Stover last round for Davis, I really didn’t expect to see him available but he made it back. I had resigned myself to K nightmares but with Stover I get a top 6 guy whose bye works out well. I was as close as anyone can be to pulling the trigger on William Green, who has been starting pre-season games but I wanted a solid K before my 6th RB.

16.04 JP Losman, QB, Bills
Don't know if I really needed to draft a 2nd QB, because if Trent Green goes down, my season probably goes down with him. But I did anyhow, because I like Losman. He has a good foundation around him bewteen McGahee, Moulds, and Evans, and with these tools, he should put up "decent" numbers. Plus, he can run the ball, and having a QB that can pick up some rushing yards is usually a plus.
Other considerations: Eli Manning, Willie Green
16th round thoughts:
Best Value - Edgerton Hartwell at 16.01. I actually thought about taking him in Round 12.
Biggest Surprise - Matt Jones at 16.11. It seems ike every year there are talks of a "break out" WR coming from Jacksonville, and every year, the talks seem to fizzle out by Week 3.

This pick became one of necessity with my next pick.
I knew I was going to be gone all day Sunday.
Did not expect both choices to go before I got back online, so figured it was easier to just do a queue of the group of DBs that I felt were fairly close to each other.

16.07 Rod Gardner, WR, Carolina Panthers
One of my big time sleepers fell to me here. I think Gardner could end up being one of my starters if Fitzgerald, DJax, or Rod Smith falter. After spending his career in Washington, where his skills were never utilized, Gardner now finds himself in Carolina. With the departure of Mushin Muhammad, Gardner should be a utilized red zone weapon. In my opinion, Colbert is not proven enough to get touches near the endzone, and Steve Smith is not big enough. That is why last year you saw Muhammad with the TD catches. I think Gardner will step in nicely and replace Mushin. I don’t think he will match those numbers of last year, but as my 5th choice at WR, I am very happy. I feel my depth here is now complete.
One thing I have realized, is at this point in the draft, all my eggs are now in Kerry Collins basket. Hopefully my rationale from round 4 holds up, because the pickings for a backup that could do anything is getting very slim.

16.08 Eli Manning, QB, NYG
Three backup QBs have been taken since my last pick, and I would have preferred each of them to Eli. Regardless, I'll hopefully only need one for week 8, and this pick gives me a chance to start a Manning every single week. So why not?
I considered a second defense with this pick, but decided that the list of QBs was getting pretty thin, so I decided to get one before all of the NFL starters were gone.

16.09 Aaron Schobel, DL, BUF
At this point I felt the need to take a DL since most of the top ones were already taken a few rounds ago. Schobel was my best option based on performance last year and bye weeks. He's real active on that Buffalo defense which should have another good season.

16.10 Lance Briggs, LB, CHI
Most managers already have 1 LB at this point, and many have 2. After I took Briggs, the only other manager with no LB's took 2 in a row. It's not my strong suit. But Briggs was pretty darn good last season (3rd among LB's in solo tackles), and I expect he'll be Top 12 this time around.
I was a little surprised that no one else took him before this pick.

16.11 – Matt Jones, WR, JAX
I’ve been jonesing (ha!... umm… yeah) to pick this guy up, especially after Thursday night’s preseason game (did you see his one-handed catch? OMG!) but couldn’t justify the pick until now. There were too many other holes to fill, and too many other options available at WR, so I risked letting him fall. This guy is a freak, and I like freaks: 6’6”, blazing speed, great hands, and as a former QB should have at least some idea of how to read a defensive secondary and find the open seams. He’ll obviously create mismatch issues with the DBs assigned to him, and with the new vertical passing attack (see rationale 9.12) he should be in for some big plays. Yes, he is a rookie, and yes, he is a #3 wideout, but Jacksonville drafted this guy for a reason (and so did I!), and I believe they’re going to take full advantage of his unique size/skill combination.
The other player I considered was Ronald Curry. I’m a Raiders fan, I love this guy, and figured he might be a good backup in case Jerry Porter gets injured. Still, Jones was just too appealing of an opportunity to pass on. Besides, I have Curry on all of my legacy teams, I needed variety (actually I have both Curry AND Jones on one of them). Curry went 2 picks later…

16.13 Ronald Curry, WR, OAK
Ronald Curry had a nice breakout year in 2004 with 50 catches, 679 yards and 6 TDs in just 12 games before getting injured. Even though he's the #3 receiver this season, I believe he can top last year's numbers and become the Brandon Stokley of 2005. When a team has Randy Moss lining up for a play, everyone benefits. Moss is going to see lots of double coverage, leaving some big play opportunities for Curry and Jerry Porter. It wouldn't be a total surprise to see him have a 1,000 yard season.

16.14 Will Witherspoon, LB, Car
17.01 Adrian Wilson, DB, Ari
One of my problems last year, I think, was a total lack of depth in IDP. I figured I'd have one from each spot, and fill in byes/injuries when necessary. Bad move. This year, I thought I'd have a backup at least at LB and DB, and possibly at DL in the hopes that one (or more) has an above-average or breakout year. I'm leaving myself a bit thin at WR, but I'm crossing my fingers there. Way I see it, if either Owens or Horn goes down, I'm screwed anyway. I'm also leaving myself thin at K and D, but I have little to worry about there. An entire defense can't get injured, and injuries to kickers occur at a much lower frequency. So I decided to go ahead and grab my LB/DB "backups" (although there's certainly a good chance that Witherspoon and Wilson will outperform my two "starters" Spikes and Taylor over the course of the season).
I don't know much about Witherspoon or Wilson really. I noticed them near the top of remaining players on a few lists, and double-checked to make sure they weren't injured (Wilson is listed as injured on 'Zona's website, but I can't find much more about it, so I assume it's minor) and were still listed as first string. Good enough for me! |

17.02 Miami Dolphins Defense
I decided to grab another team defense, which could be useful if I feel the Ravens aren't getting it done or they have a bad matchup. In my opinion, the Dolphins defense doesn't get enough credit for how well they perform. It's hard to be an elite defense when the offense ranks near the bottom of the league in just about every category. Ranking 30th in time of possession will wear any defense down. Plus, not moving the ball well means Dolphins opponents have better field position to score. With the arrival of Ronnie Brown and the return of Ricky Williams, the offense should do a better job of establishing their ball-control offense. And hopefully, the defense will improve as a result of that.

17.04 Jeff Wilkins, K, STL
Well, at this point I’m pretty much just covering byes, adding depth, etc… and there was nobody left I felt I needed to grab who I couldn’t get a round or two (or three or four) later. Over half the teams still needed to grab Ks, so even though there’s not much difference between them all at this point, I figured I might as well snag one who I like... who also happens to kick in a dome. Could be advantageous come December. I think the Rams will put up a lot of points this year, so he should provide some consistent points, but I don't expect a massive number of field goals. Still, I feel he's bound to score at least as well as most of the other kicker's who are still available at this point. [edit: I got nervous when it looked like his knee bent backwards in tonight's game... but he came on for a few more FGs after that, so it seems all is well in Whoville. No rhyme or reason for the Grinch reference... just felt like it.]

17.05 Arizona Cardinals, DEF, ARI
Bigtime sleeper in my mind. I’ve read a lot of good stuff about this unit. They can rush the passer, and they have an aggressive scheme implemented by DC Clancy Pendergrast. I saw some excellent play from them in 2004, but the consistency was lacking. This time around I expect more consistency and about 10 fantasy points a week on average. Between Arizona and Chicago I hope to have at least 1 Top 6 TM DEF. I think one of these 2 units should step up this season and play that well.

Brown is my 2nd DB and my fourth IDP. If Terrence McGee performs as I hope, Brown will probably ride the pine except for bye weeks. But you never know. He should rack up the tackles, and produce reasonably consistent fantasy points. He is coming back from a torn Achilles tendon, but it appears that he should be OK, and is a reasonable choice in round 17.

On my radar, the best player available at this point. Considering Bubba Franks might be the most inconsistent scorer at the TE position, this was my first pick with the doubleheader in mind. I figure I can throw Pollard and Franks both out there, and hope for the best, and then if it comes down to a close game, a zero from Bubba not might kill me. Just worth a shot. After both their bye weeks are done, I probably will drop one for more depth somewhere else.

17.11 Greg Lewis, WR, PHI
My 5th WR, and he may never play for me, but I thought it was a good time to make a high risk/reward pick. Lewis is the #2 WR in Philly, and with Owens taking the double teams and attention from opposing defenses, he has the chance to have a big year. Plus, if Owens decides to do anything crazy/stupid, Lewis becomes the #1 WR. I considered another WR, who hasn't been drafted, but as of right now, I am excited about the upside of Lewis.
17th Round thoughts:
Best Value - Michael Strahan at 17.14 and Marcus Pollard at 17.08. With our new sack scoring, Strahan is a great pick, and as for Pollard, I think kev will be starting him over Franks not too long into the season.
Biggest surprise - Sean Jones at 17.09. Don't really know much about him (and haven't heard GL's rationale!), so, I am putting him as biggest surprise.

Rationals are starting to get really obvious at this point. I've always considered Strahan to be a TOP 5 DL, and he's been slipping lately. Considering I got him as the 10th DL, and he has such a proven track record, I'm happy with this pick.
18.01 Dallas Cowboys, DEF
Had the "Boys" last year, and their SoS and injuries to key players made it really hard for them to put up good #s. Last year, I dealt them away early and road out Atlanta then moved over to the Bills. Just goes to prove how you just never know with defences. I wanted a 2nd Option with potential, in order to play matchups. I also was considering heavily the Vikings, who went off with the next pick.

I like Northcutt as a fill in as he has potential to explode on any given week. Obviously the Browns are a play action team who throws the ball deep. Also, he returns punts. Not real happy about the QB or about the Browns in general, but now that I own 3 Browns, looks like I am hoping for 1) a foolish commitment to the running game that 2) leads to being down 21-3 in the 3rd quarter so that they have to start throwing the ball and 3) the opponent puts in the second team and punts a lot. But of course, only on the bye weeks when I need them. Man, If only I could really draw this stuff up.

Azumah is one of only a handful of DB's that start and return kicks, so, I am happy taking Azumah as my only DB. All signs point to him being healthy for the opener, and last season, he averaged nearly 10 fantasy points/game. I felt that all the top tackling DB's had been taken, and that Azumah is a safe choice to stay in my lineup all season.
18th Round thoughts:
Best Pick - Glenn at 18.09. If healthy he can be a starter for almost any team in our league.
Biggest surprise - Nick Goings at 18.06. He was the 4th RB from Carolina drafted...has that ever happened in a fantasy league before?

18.07 Kyle Boller, QB, Baltimore Ravens
I could bore you with thoughts on Kyle Boller’s maturity, and the fact he has more weapons, but there is one reason I picked this bum- not only was he one of the few starters left, but he plays Detroit in week 5 when Kerry Collins is smoking cigars on his bye week. In a dome, against a weaker defense…hopefully he doesn’t throw 5 INT’s. Other than that, he can rot on my bench wishing he was as cool as Kerry Collins.

18.08 Moe Williams, Min, RB
The RB situation in Minny seems to have all sorts of uncertainties, so a flyer on Moe Williams seems like good value for an 18th rounder. Michael Bennett may miss the opener due to injury (and since when has Michael Bennett ever been consistent at playing, let alone producing). Mewelde Moore's status is also up in the air, and while his sprained ankle should be OK by the start of the season, he did miss quite a few games with a sprained ankle last year. And even if both Bennett and Moore are healthy, Williams could vulture a few TDs if the Vikes use him as a goal line back.

18.09 Terry Glenn, WR, DAL
Well, here's hoping he stays healthy. My WR corps was thin and I need to get another that should get some playing time. If he can play at least the first few weeks of the season to cover my week 4 bye I'll be happy, since Price is currently not with a team and I'm down to hardly anything for backups. Basically the WR are slim pickings at this point and anyone taken stands a good chance of being dropped and replaced with a waiver wire WR.

18.10 Michael Jenkins, WR, ATL
Round after round I pondered this question: why is Michael Jenkins still available? I guess it’s the same question I was asking myself about Joey Harrington. I finally felt comfortable taking Jenkins in the 18th round. Not much risk here. I know people have been reading the box scores and see that Jenkins has done well this preseason. My favorite thing about him is that he is a starter, and there aren’t many of those left at this point in the draft. Price getting cut can only help him.
I don’t care how talented a WR is, if he plays for the Falcons, his fate is in Vick’s hands. Vick has gotten better at passing, but the progression has been slow and incremental. If that process continues this season, I like Jenkins’ potential. Last season I drafted Gates in the 18th round. I know it’s unlikely to strike gold twice here, but I have my fingers crossed that Jenkins will resemble some precious gem in the rough.

18.11 – Heath Miller, TE, PIT This was a bit of a surprise pick for me… by round 10 or so I was sort of plotting out the rest of my picks (at least in very rough terms)… but the last few rounds of the draft were always a bit nebulous. As I said in my 17.04 rationale, nobody stood out from the crowd as a must-have, so I was just filling holes based on the previous few rounds of activity and what I felt I still needed to address. I knew that I wanted a return man as my WR5, but there were two who I liked equally and thought both were likely to make it around the turn (certainly at least one of them).
A backup TE was barely even on my radar screen. Maybe I’d take one in round 21 or something, if at all. And then... well... then Heath just kinda jumped out at me. Which was really scary, ‘cus he’s a big guy, and I wasn’t expecting it.
I do like my TE1 Dallas Clark in the Indy offense, but have heard great things about Heath Miller’s role in Pittsburgh as well, and eventually decided that getting a backup TE here would be a solid move, because there’s a reasonable chance that he could even emerge as my TE1 option as the season progresses.
Also, I like Heath Bars… so there’s that too. Hopefully he brings enough with him to share with the whole team. And the manager. Oh, he’s also a rookie, which rhymes with COOKIE! So yes, with this pick, my team definitely will be well-covered in the snack department (we're employing the patented "Nickel n' Dime" scheme for our coverage), and snacks, as we all know, are an important part of enjoying fantasy football.

18.12 Erik Coleman, DB, NYJ
Last year as a rookie, Coleman had 100 tackles, 2 sack, 12 passes defended, and 4 interceptions, outstanding numbers coming from a first year safety.
To be honest, I never heard of Coleman. I based my selection on his bye week & stats and I felt the plus was finding out he was a rookie last year which adds the hope for an improvement in numbers for this season.

18.14 Daniel Graham, TE, NE 19.01 Michael Turner, RB, SD
I expect Graham to be a middle-of-the-road TE, which is about the best I'm going to get at this point in the draft. Pick's not worth saying much more about.
I wish I could honestly say the following about Turner:
For the past few rounds, I've been watching every pick in anticipation that Turner would be pulled out from underneath me. Sure LT is a hoss, but even the best can break down. With Chatman long gone, and Turner's impressive play during preseason, he's got a lock on #2 behind LT. Should LT go down *shudder*, I fully expect Turner to be a very productive back and help keep my season from being a total disaster.
I wish I could say that, but I can't. I wasn't aware, as I pointed out, that Chatman had been cut. Nor had I even bothered checking out Turner's preseason stats... I don't give them much notice anyway. Hell, I don't even remember ever hearing the term "handcuff" applied in fantasy football. Truth be told, the only reason Turner was selected here and not in round 20/21 is because I had forgotten my draft papers in my office and was working on (vague) memory.

19.02 Simeon Rice, DL, TB
I finally drafted a player for my defensive lineman spot here. After the first couple of DL went, they just all seemed the same to me. Also, I felt DLs tend to be more inconsistent fantasy-wise than any other other position because their value is heavily dependent on sacks. And sack leaders change every season it seems.
Simeon Rice is getting up there in age, but his stats sure don't show it. His 42.5 sacks over the past 3 seasons are very impressive. 4 consecutive seasons with double-digit sack totals, how about a 5th?

To be honest, I was really surprised Antowain moved onto the Saints this year as IMHO he step in and filled the role admirably. Maybe the Saints offered a better contract??
Antowain is a quality back up that I feel could start for a couple of teams. With the Saints established running game, if Deuce should go down…..

19.04 – Wes Welker, WR, MIA
I took a chance on Matt Jones as my WR4, but I also need a reliable WR5 who will consistently score some points when covering bye weeks and injuries for my starters. A kick returner seems as good a way as any to do that (similarly I took BJ Sams as my RB3). I had my eye on Northcutt, even though he plays for Cleveland. Reports say he’s a favorite of the coach, and throw in those PR yards… could be a solid pickup for Bandos.
That left Lewis and Welker as the top WR-eligible returners who don’t have bye week conflicts with my other WRs… and I could see almost no statistical difference to favor one or the other. In the end, I decided Miami’s abysmal excuse for an offense would give their opponents good field position and lots of scoring chances… hence KR opportunities for Welker. Miami does have a decent defense though, so whenever the ball’s on the other side of the field, they should be able to force some punts. New Orleans is more committed to the ground game than last year… which could result in a bit more time coming off the clock, and thus a slight reduction in opportunities for Lewis (as a result of the game being “shortened”).
Really though, I’m just searching for a justification to make it sound like I have a reason to favor one over the other, but I don’t really. I could have just as well flipped a small child coin.

19.05 Eric Parker, WR, SDG
It isn’t a very fantasy friendly environment for WR’s in San Diego with Tomlinson and Gates catching 5-10 balls per game and there being three similarly productive wideouts to split remaining touches. That’s why I like the one who gets to return punts, too.
He had 980 combined rushing/receiving/punt return yards and 4 TD’s last season, and missed one game. So for purposes of the RIFC, he could be a “1,000 yard receiver”. It’s a stretch but it’s worth it in round 19. If he duplicates last year’s numbers, I’ll be very happy. Hopefully I won’t need to play him much behind Holt, Wayne, and Colbert or Jenkins. No, screw that: hopefully he becomes a 1,600 yard, 10 TD guy. But barring that, he’s my #5 and I have no delusions of grandeur.

19.06 Marcus Trufant, DB, SEA
I needed an IDP backup and figured DB was the way to go after looking at the remaining LBs. Trufant averaged about the same or more than most of the LBs left on the board and can also fill in for Reed on his bye week. He's also able to fill in for both of my LBs bye weeks, so it's kind of an all-inclusive deal by picking him up.

19.07 Justin Smith, DL, Cin
I have 3 picks left, and two of them must be used for a DL and a PK. Looking at the other rosters, we could easily lose 3 kickers and 2-3 DL before my next pick.
I'd like to get a player with a late bye for each slot. At kicker, Shayne Graham and John Carney are still available with a week 10 bye. But there are also 2 8's and a 7 rounding out the top 5 kickers on my list. Shayne Graham would probably be my top choice, although he has a sore groin and hasn’t kicked the last few weeks. Mike Carney is old, but still seems to be kicking fine. Guess I'll defer for now.
At DL, the only player in my current top 10 with a bye in week 10 is Justin Smith. He's young and presumably still improving, and although a bit undersized for the position, has been pretty durable. I guess I'll nab that week 10 bye now.

19.08 St Louis Rams Defense I needed a backup to Pittsburgh, so why not take the defense that has a pirate on it? The Rams aren’t your ideal defense in fantasy football, and probably won’t see a ton of starting time for me with Pittsburgh being my normal starter. The week Pittsburgh has a bye, St Louis plays the Giants. The week Pittsburgh plays the Pats, the Rams play the Titans, so I could use them there. The week Pittsburgh plays Indy, St Louis plays Houston. As much as they are lower ranked, they fit well with Pittsburgh as a tandem.

19.11 Bertrand Berry, DL, AZ
Again, filling an open starting spot with what I saw as the best available DL. I don't know much to say about Berry...he is big and can get tackles and sacks. Plus, if Arizona stinks again this year, which may not be the case, he should always end up with tackles due to the amount of rushing plays opposing offenses will do. I guess that's the best rationale I can come up with.
19th Round thoughts:
Best pick - Joey Galloway at 19.14. He should get more than enough receptions as teams focus on Clayton.

19.14 Joey Galloway, WR, TAM My 3rd Post 30 WR? It's all good! He's a #2 WR on a team that will probably have an easier time passing this year than relying on a rookie RB. Galloway is still listed as taking the occasional PR which is a nice little bonus. Just a little more depth to a position that I feel is a little underappreciated. He could see himself being a starter on my team or... should he prove to be showing major lack of speed early in the season, he could be my first player cut.
20.01 Dunta Robinson, DB, HOU Was the eigth highest scoring DB in our scoring system last year! Yes that takes into account the Clemens and McGee's into that list too. What's even more impressive, is he did this as a rookie. Between him and Madieu I should be well covered for the season at DB.

20.04 Jeff Reed, K, PIT
Not sure if I like this pick, and probably should have gotten Arnaz Battle here, seeing as I wanted him and he went at 20.05. I did want Nugent though if I didn't get Reed, and Guru snatched him up in Round 20 also, so, I wouldn't have gotten him either...unless Guru wants to swap Kickers post draft. The reason I like Reed: I am not sold on the Steelers offense putting up a ton of TD's this year, but I am sure about the Steelers defense causing TO's and getting good field position within FG range. Should open up a lot of FG opportunities for Reed.
20th Round thoughts:
Best value - Ben Troupe at 20.13. He may be the Gates of 2005. I've liked his ability since college and have always thought he will transition well in the NFL. I also like Travis Taylor at 20.14

I had been eyeing Date Rape earlier, but he went earlier than I had thought. It’s almost sad I don’t have the big Polish dude on my team. I like it when my kickers butt is bigger than mine. After he went, I just waited as long as possible to draft a kicker. I tend to like kickers with late bye weeks, as I can just make a rotation through another kicker to end the season. I will never carry 2 kickers. Ever. Until his bye week, Carney gets to kick in 7 out of 10 games in a dome. I will take those odds, and take his big leg as a bonus.

Hmm...I'm beginning to wonder why I even made this pick. He was having a good preseason last I checked and now I see he's somewhat injured (no surprise) and Booker will probably start over him anyways. I needed another WR at this point and there really wasn't much left besides the Dolphin's #2 WR. I had a feeling that Boston would overtake that spot, but it's probably not going to happen. Booker is still available, so I can always try and switch them when I get a chance, but I have to wait and see where Peerless Price goes first. I see he was supposed to meet with the Dolphins today. I'd rather him not go there, as we have the WRs, just not a good QB (Miami fan here). But if he were to go to Miami, I'd have to drop Boston and find another option elsewhere as Price should be the #2 receiver at that point.

Drafted in the second round of the 2005 NFL draft, he was Denver’s first pick. He had a noteworthy collegiate career as a KR/PR for Oklahoma State, and that’s what the Broncos plan to use him for as well. He’s currently first on the depth chart for KR and PR. He’s the 3rd CB, too, so he may get me some defensive points. He’ll line up Week 1 as my flex IDP. We’ll see how long that lasts. Taylor is a pure gamble. Given the fluidity of Minnesota's receiving corps, I think Burleson's the only sure thing. I went back and forth between Taylor and *oops almost said it*, and basically made my decision based on Taylor's age.
Shaun Ellis... hey, didn't I have this guy last year? Nothing special, but I'll be needing to fill in a DL bye in week 4, so I thought I'd go ahead and do it now. 21.04 – Tennessee Titans, D/ST I always like to have at least one slot on my roster that isn’t beholden to any particular position. A roster slot I can move around to cover byes, etc. A “floater” you might say. Which is a particularly apt title, given the quality of fantasy players available in round 21 of a 14 team draft.
So, what’s the first stop for my floater? Team D/ST. The Jets play KC in week 1. Ouch. KC’s offense is scurry good. So instead I’ll go with Tennessee, who matches up against a Pittsburgh team who will be without the top 2 RBs on their depth chart, and who’s star WR missed half of training camp.
Wait a second… didn’t I just say that Tennessee’s defense blows in my last rationale? Checking… umm… yep.
OK, so admittedly Tennessee’s D is in the toilet (ha, butt what could be more appropriate?)… still though, it seems like they’ll have better odds than the Jets will for week 1. The juggernaut of KC’s ground game cannot be stopped, whereas I believe Pittsburgh will be quite stoppable (in week 1 anyway).
I had originally penciled in the Rams D/ST, facing SF in week 1. Then I changed my mind. If SF was planning to start Alex Smith, I’d have wanted St. Louis… but alas I think Rattay is good enough for at least a couple TD tosses against the Rams’ very depleted secondary. Of course, as it turned out, kevmarbury drafted St. Louis in the 19th round, so my decision was basically made for me anyway!
At the last minute, I considered changing my round 21 pick to a WR… as Porter’s lingering hammy injury is becoming a bit of a concern. But I figured I can wait and see what happens with him against New England, and then drop the Titans for a WR who looks good week 1 if it seems the appropriate thing to do at that point. Maybe I’ll find the next Anquan Boldin. Which would be great, since the previous Anqaun Boldin is already on my team. Along with Norm Chow.

This guy’s not irrelevant to me. He could be the starter at some point this season. Mewelde was a rook last season and he started like 3 games and tore it up when he did. Fason is a Florida Gator, as am I, so that makes this pick much more satisfying. But fluff aside, Fason's name has come up when HC Mike Tice discussed the starter for Minnesota's final preseason game this week. We'll see how good the kid looks then.
And no I am not worried that they just claimed [undrafted player] off of waivers!

21.06 Kansas City Chiefs, DEF, KC
Since the remaining WR are still a crapshoot, I decided to take a backup defense for when the Eagles have off. I think the Chiefs defense will be improved this year, but still not that great. I took the Chiefs because they play the Dolphins on the Eagles bye week. Now as a Miami fan, I'd like to think the Fins will put up some points, but I can also see them playing as poorly as last year and the Chiefs getting some decent points. I guess it doesn't really matter because the other defenses left most likely won't have great games during the Eagle's bye week anyways.

21.07. Michael Lewis, WR, NO
Several considerations.
I could pick up a second defense. I think I'm satisfied with the Colts' schedule for the first 7 weeks, so I shouldn’t need a second defense until week 8 (Indy's bye). At this point, I don’t think I want to tie up a bench slot for 7 weeks, especially with a lower ranked defense. I'll take pot luck in week 8, at least for the time being. Several of the available defenses seem to have decent matchups in week 8.
I considered taking Peyton Manning's backup. But I don’t think I could recognize him if he walked into the room wearing a T-shirt that said "Peyton Manning's backup". I think I'll live with Eli as my only QB insurance for now. Besides, Peyton's durability was one of the reasons I used a first round pick on him. No sense offsetting some of that by consuming an extra bench slot.
I have bye-week provisions already laid in for LB/DB, and my DL's bye isn’t until week 10. No need to bulk up there. I don’t want a second kicker, and I have 2 tight ends.
So I'm left to consider a 6th RB or a 5th WR. The list of available RBs looks pretty anemic – in fact, I'm not sure I see one who is assured of being the #2 RB. There are some more recognizable names at WR, and also a few starters. But Michael Lewis provides a "safe" backup option as the primary kick and punt returner for the Saints. Who knows? Maybe he'll even catch a few passes. He caught 8 last year!

21.08 Julian Peterson, LB, San Fran 49ers
It’s the last round, and I get a nice LB to fill out my defensive roster. With Arrington having a week 3 bye, I needed to find another starter, so I went with the best player available at LB. Peterson, much like the pirate I took earlier, is the best player on what is a horrible defense. I doubt he will survive through week 5 on my team, but for now, he will do. If he exceeds expectations, I have a solid LB core to decide between.

21.09 Jerramy Stevens, TE, Sea
Guess I'm a glutton for punishment with Jerramy. Didn't have a back up TE and hate to say it yet again, but still think he has a lot of upside. Maybe this will be the year that he finally performs as expected. Strictly a backup for Johnson's bye week, but we'll just have to see.

21.12 Marcus Robinson, WR, MIN
Minnesota is supposed to be good, right? Daunte, ok too? Well, his bye week sucks which is why I didn’t draft Marcus rounds ago but in the 21st round the WR2 for Minny being available is puzzling. In Chicago he was not a factor as their QB’s kinda sucked. The 21 st round seems like a good round for this kind of high upside pick/ he might be dropped soon to fill bye issues.

21.13 Rosevelt Colvin LB NE
I was at school. My lists were at home. Colvin went to Purdue. That about sums it up. OK, OK, OK the thought that he may step it up a notch this year with a couple holes in the NE D did pass threw my mind, but that was pretty much a manufactured reason. I just thought it would be cool to have a Boilermaker on both sides of the ball.
I type these up and I just shake my head and laugh. Not because I think I'm a hilarious kind of guy, but because I marvel at how some of you guys can come up with actual analysis and real thought for guys taken beyond the say 17th round. I know, Motley, you took Gates in the 18th round last year (how many times have you slipped that into one of these rationales, we GET it ;)

21.14 Adewale Ogunleye
Last pick in the draft…so I'm not expecting any major surprises to still be available here. I decided just to focus this pick to cover an early bye week replacement. He should do just fine.
