espn classic maybe? I was just a kid when Campbell played. About all I remember from watching Oiler games on TV is Campbell running over people. I also seem to remember some dude with the number 00. can't think of who that could have been. a wr maybe?

It would be awesome to find the film of that bruising run where he ran right through a guy who grabbed his jersey and literally ripped it off Earl's back as he broke free for a long TD. That's the way I remember it. Anyone else know which one I'm talking about?
Does the NFL network run any of the old NFL Films specials? That might be a good way to catch some footage.

That's funny as I've seen two clips of Earl Campbell this past week. One on ESPN Classic and the other on NFL Network. Ender I remember that one. They showed it a bajillion times after it happened too.

Those Texas tear-away jerseys (remember those?) were always being torn off him, but the Oilers jersey wasn't supposed to tear!

I couldn't get the other earl video to work.

Damn...never seen that one in post 8. He first makes contact with that guy just shade into the 5 and then the guy doesn't land until a yard deep in the endzone. Amazing! And Earl just makes it look like a walk in the park.

There was a good highlight clip about a year ago but the site no longer exists. I stumbled across your blog looking to the video. The clip showed Earl breaking 7 or 8 tackles and running over smaller db's on a 25 - 30 run against the LA Rams, awsome clip

My first ever legal secretary is married to Randy McEachern, the ex-Univ of Texas QB for Campbell's Jr and Sr years. According to Randy, he only had to rules when in the backfield with the Tyler Rose.
Rule number 1: Always get your hand back when handing the football off to Cambell, otherwise, he would drag you behind him as he ran down the field.
Rule number 2: Never get between Cambell and the hole he was supoose to be running through.
McEachern was a 3rd string QB his Jr year, however, the two ahead of him on the depth chart got knocked out of the Texas OU game. Randy took over and only lost 1 game...that was to Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl for the National champeeeenship. Unconfirmed rumor is that one QB was knocked out by not following rule number 1...the other for not following rule number 2.
My "won't go away" memory of Earl came his rookie or sophmore year as a pro on Monday Night Football in a tight game with ??. He took a hand off into the right tackle trying to take time of the clock, bounced to the outside, ran over a linebacker and continued for 80 or so yards, the CB and safeties giving chase, but not able to pick up even a step. It closed out the game.
Not only power...but great speed..unbelievable speed for his size.

I wish I could unearth two videos.. Flutie's Hail Mary, and Steve Young's run against the Vikings.
Trying to explain that run to someone and they had no idea what I was talking about.

The number 00 you were referring to was Billy "White shoes" Johnson. He was a kick returner and wide receiver. Exceptionally good kick returner.

did he take the number over after Burrough left? I was just a kid in the 70's so all I remember is 00 kicking some butt. I found a Ken Burrough jersey on the net that was 00, but that doesn't mean that white shoes johnson wasn't also 00. gotta look this up.

My favorite running back from the same era..."Sweetness"
Highlights 1 Highlights 2 He could do it all... More...
Maybe not the best pure runner of all-time but may be the best football player ever...could do it all.
