The Houston Texans opted instead for defensive end Mario Williams, pulling one of the biggest shockers in recent history. They signed the North Carolina State standout to a six-year, $54 million contract, with $26.5 million guaranteed Friday night, hours before the start of the draft Saturday. |

The move also signifies the team remains confident in the abilities of running back Domanick Davis, who signed a five-year contract reportedly worth more than $21 million before last season.
"The bottom line is he's going to be here and he's going to play, so you've got a player already there that's proven," Casserly said.
The choice of Williams by the Texans could dramatically alter the landscape of the early segment of the first round. The New Orleans Saints, with the second choice, have indicated they would snap up Bush if he fell to their slot. But the Saints had hinted, in general, that they might entertain trade offers for their pick.
The availability of Bush at the No. 2 spot would almost certainly elicit trade offers.
ESPN's Sal Paolantonio reported that other teams are interested in trading up and trying to get Bush in the draft. Among five teams that have contacted the Saints are the Jets, Raiders and the Packers. The Cardinals might be interested in trading up to No. 2, also, but they are not interested in drafting Bush.

The Saints, picking up Drew Brees and now having an asset to trade (Bush or Deuce) could get themselves into very good position this year.

I think the Steelers are going to move up 10 spots or so if Santonio Holmes is there to get him. They have 10 draft picks from some suplementals that they picked up and they are ready to use them if the right guy is there.

Unless Warner gets hurt, I don't see any of the rookie QB's getting much playing time this year. Leinhart might be sad that he fell to 10th, but could he have went to a better offense (as far as teams needing a QB)? Edge, Boldin, Fitz...I know I would be stoked if I was him.

Nice call SW - #5.
It was nice to see Steelers get one of the top WR's in the draft. A.RE was a decent role player but he would not have been a starter on most teams.
I know WR's are usually one of slowest positions to make an impact in the NFL but I guess I am still a little surprised that the first WR didn't go until Pitt picked. Was it really that weak of a draft for WR's this year?
To the Vikes, you never know on draft day, but is this one of the worst draft teams there is? Most of the folks I talked to are in disbelief at their choices yet again. One staff writer said after their second pick in round two, "if this was a fight, they would have to throw in the towel". Now that is funny. Who are these guys and how can you reach for a player at 50 something that isn't in the top 100 for most boards. Then they trade two number 3's for Pitt's second round pick. MN is not a player or two away from the big game. They need bodies to come in and make the team and hopefully start in a couple years from now. Your third round picks should make your squad. Giving up two thirds just didn't make sense to me especially for who they went with.

Lendale White going at 45 is telling. Either a HUGE steal or a wasted 2nd rounder. He had more TDs than Bush. If he gets his act together he could be a very good pro.

Some very interesting stats regarding the draft "experts":
John Lund, AM Drive host at 1270 WXYT in Detroit, with help from Mike Sando of the Tacoma News Tribune, looked at 17 mock drafts and came up with these odd stats:
• The only consensus pick was Reggie Bush #1 to Texans...all missed.
• On average the "expert" was 4 for 32 in right team / right player picks.
• On average "expert" picked 26 of the 32 players picked in the first round regardless of team.
• Every mock had Winston Justice in first round. He went 39th to Philly in 2nd round. Jarrett Bell of USA Today and Don Banks of SI.com had him 8th to Buffalo.
• Every mock had Chad Jackson, WR Florida in the first round. He went to the Patriots in the 2nd round, pick 36th overall. Most had him going to Denver at # 15.
• Frank Croyle of Dratfinsiders.com (Ha!) and Chris Colston of USA Today picked 1 player/team combos correctly. Croyle picked Nick Mangold to the Jets at #29. He was the only expert to go 0 for the first 10 picks. He went 0 for the first 28 picks. Colston picked Vernon Davis to the 49ers at #6 and missed 26 straight.
• The draft God, Mel Kiper picked 5 correctly and had 26 of the 32 players in the first round in his mock.

Agreed.
They are always a bit unconventional, and they do need some different personnel to go with a new scheme, but that's no reason to throw away obvious value, picking dudes 10 picks (at least) too early.
They needed linemen. They got DBs. Maybe they can stack them on eachother's shoulders.

Re: 78
Does anyone know if anyone has compiled a team's "grades" and compared it to their record over a certain time period?
It doesn't take into accout free agency, but good or bad drafting should have some relationsip to a teams record.
I'm a Colts fan so I'm biased, but the Colts usually get a low draft grade. Granted they haven't won a SuperBowl, but they have had a good record over the last 4-5 years.
The Colts and Polian have been mocked for not making the "smart/expert" pick, but I have to think they have turned out ok i.e. Manning/Leaf, Edge/Ricky, Freeney/whoever.

Mike Mayock Mock Draft
He got the first 8 right. Missed at #9 but had Leinhart at #10 and Cutler at #11 but to the rams.

re 86...Wow, that is incredible!
re 83...The Bills did reach a bit on their first pick, but got GREAT value on their later picks that made up for it. I would have liked to see a good OL picked up somewhere, but I am generally pleased with what they did.
I heard today on the radio that it would make the most sense to Grade Drafts 5 years later...and I agree...it takes some players longer to develop than others, and who can really tell who is going to be good before they actually take to the field, that is why there are busts and sleepers!

#86- He got the first two picks wrong. Williams went first, not Bush.
I don't think the Bills reached on Whitner. He is definite first round value and should be an excellent playmaker for them, but I do think they could have traded down and still got him. I read specualtion that they thought Detroit or another team was looking at Whitner so they didn't gamble on trading down.

I meant to add this to the last post. In the ESPN's 2006 NFL Draft First Round Forecast there were several people who got 12 of the first 13 picks correct, with the only wild-card being Whitner. Lots of people guessed Bunkley was going in that spot.
