Judy:

Recieved the 2nd invite and I have signed up.
I big THANK YOU to you for stepping up to the plate and getting things going.
Dont worry about making the little mistakes (1st invite not working).
The important thing about being commissioner is having the passion to get things done.
When it comes to passion towards fantasy sports I dont think anyone can top you.
We are lucky to have you running the show.
Looking forward to a great season.

We are almost there. Two more to sign up for the draft and one
more (signed in draft) to sign up on AOL. (You know who you
are...)

I plan to have my neighbor pick numbers out of a bowl (when
she gets home) and that will be the draft order. It is a snake
draft, so slots #1 and #14 have two in a row at the turnaround. I
will post the list as soon as we approve of this method to set the
order... (Majority rules - 7 Yes and we go with it.)

Here are my thoughts on the drafting process:
Go to Kafenatid to review their information.

Early rounds until Monday, August 13, no time limit - these
are the studs who will go in the early rounds and I suspect that
people know who they really want, but we won’t stress a time
limit.

Beginning Monday August 13 at 6 pm EDT:
Rounds UP TO #19 -- 2 hours between picks
Rounds #20-#24 -- 1 hour between picks.

If we start this week -- our goal is a minimum of one and a
half rounds a day beginning August 13th. (I know this does not
sound like a lot, but the draft can get bogged down quickly, so
we need to keep moving. Mike warned me that this would be
the hardest part of my job -- but with the way you all are
responding to sign ups, I think we will be just fine!)

Please try and use a queue if you know you will be away
from a computer for a while. I have already heard that some of
you cannot use work computers to draft! Bummer!

I would like to run the draft from 6 am EDT to midnight
EDT. I am assuming (and let me know if I am in error) that we
are all somewhere in the EDT to PDT time zone (USA)??? The 6
am, while early for PDT, is before work for the EDT. The
midnight lets the PDT draft in their evening.

LET ME KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS ON THESE IDEAS.
1) Draft order selection method
2) Start of draft with no time limit
3) Timing interval for timed draft and start day and time
4) Draft time interval of 6 am to midnight EDT

Once we are all in concensus agreement (I taught at a Quaker
school), I’ll start her up.

1) The neighbour's bowl method determines the order in which we select our draft order, right? If so, it's OK with me. You might have some sticklers who prefer the "two sets of randonm numbers" method.

2)No time limit until Tuesday, August 14. (There are pre-season games scheduled for Monday, August 13; time limits should not start until they are over). You can start the draft whenever you want but until there's a time limit I'm not picking a player who could be put out for the season in the upcoming weekend's exhibition games.

3)The time limit should be no shorter than 4 hours per pick. Starting in mid-August with a 4-hour time limit will have us through in plenty of time. 1 and 2 hour time limits are absurdly short and completely unnecessary. You definitely do not want someone missing an early round draft pick because of a 2-hour time limit.

4) Again, 6 AM to midnight is too hardass. I mean, really. Someone on the West Coast could have his time start at 3 AM PT and with a 2 hour time limit, time out at 5 AM his time! Queues are highly desirable but can't always be used, especially if the draft is moving fast, which we want. I can live with any drafting period myself but I recommend starting no earlier than 9 A.M. I guess you could end at midnight if you want but would recommend 11 P.M. You can always expand this drafting period later if we are bogged down.

I thought Quakers were laid-back, very silent people ;)

I'm not sure what the other leagues are running for time between picks, but 1 and 2 hours seems extremely short when there's only 6 hours of unclocked draft time during each day. I know I don't like leaving large queues and would prefer to make picks myself in case any position runs start that would change my selection.
This of course depends on what round we've gotten to before the 13th.

I'd also suggest putting a clock on picks before the 13th. I'd go no lower than 4 hours, but no more than 6. It's sort of depressing running into a day where there's 2 or 3 picks because someone ate up 8 hours of clock time for one pick because something came up and they didn't have a queue.

thanks Toral

I didn't know about the preseason games on the 13th. To me
they are meaningless, except from an injury standpoint,
although the injured or "tweaked" ones rarely play anyway. For
me that would be Donovan, Brian W and now Brian D.
GO E-A-G-L-E-S!

I was trying to remember from last year and I guess I
remembered wrong. I picked 2 hours, but it probably was 4. I
know I spent a lot of time waiting...

It does give the PDT's more time...I wanted to give the EDT's
time to do something before work...

We shall see how the discussion goes.

And, no, not all Quakers are silent...

Actually, I take back what I said about a time on picks before the 13th. I'd prefer to start the 14th because of the pre-season games, but if we did start early, no clock would be best. Basically for the reason Toral stated.

I have no problem with the neighbors bowl solution;as long as Toral states it is for our spot on the "draft pick draft".

I think the RIFC starts with an 8 hr time limit and shortens it if needed (on Aug 14)if we like. I prefer some time limit even if we start soon.

Again I believe RIFC runs 8 to 10 Eastern time with no clock on the weekends, again we can change this if the draft bogs down.

I think we should try to keep as close to RIFC draft as possible.

Thanks to Judy for all her work and to everyone for their participation.

Draft pick draft? HUH? I see that other leagues are asking a series
of random number generations --from which they pick one
sequence -- or not?

Seems confusing.

HUH?

I will check on the AAA time limits and get back to you all.

I think I have figured out what draft to draft means.

We set an order (from my neighbor or whatever) and the #1
person gets to pick where in the draft they want to pick. Then
#2 picks and so on. This seems to be what the "big boys and
girl" are doing...

Is that it?

Is that what we want to do? It'll take a little time, but we seem to
be a very responsible group!

Let me know. Your opinion counts, esp since I am still a rookie!

I'd like to come to some consensus by, say 9 pm, on wednesday?

Yes, that's what it means and is how it's been done the past few years here. Normally you'd have 2 different people in the league email you a list of numbers. The first set would be matched to a random list of the managers (your neighbor can pick from a hat). The second set is then matched to the first set to determine order of picking. Example:

Set 1: 5 1 4 2 3
Set 2: 3 4 5 1 2

Neighbor: M2, M1, M3, M4, M5
(M1-5 are just managers)

Applied to first set: M1, M4, M5, M3, M2
When you take this list and apply it to the second set, you get the following pick order:
1. M3
2. M2
3. M1
4. M4
5. M5

Hopefully you can follow that and I didn't mess up. I know there's an explanation from Guru in one of the threads.

I would like to pick my draft position from a random draw. It might cut down on early trades. I could not figure that double random number generator thing at all, and I like numbers. Nice try BoNkA, but I got lost. I am a West Coaster and will get up at 5:30am on my draft days. I am good until 11:00pm. There are only 2 games on August 13, and 1 on 12th. No clock until then is fine, but if someone is going to wait until a specific game is over, they should let the next person (or commish) know. I do not like a 2 hour clock unless we get stuck for finishing. 4 hours is better and should be plenty.
I do have a government computer at work so I may use a que.
Has anyone seen the VBD software available yet?? Or doesn't anyone use it?? This is the largest roster ever for this dumb rookie.

I would have to agree that 2 hours is way too short.
In past years I think most drafts have been 6 hours.
You can always shorten it to 4 if it bogs down.
Keep in mind most managers dont use their entire time.
I would hate to be skipped if I leave a Que for my next pick and it comes around for another pick because everyone else used their Q's and I timed out.
The idea is to keep it moving at a steady pace.
I know there are plenty of times that someone else is on the clock and it has given me time to plan my next pick.
All down time doesnt need to be dead time.

It's hard to follow, but easy once you understand (like anything). I did notice that rather than having a random list (from the neighbor), Guru just sorted managers alphabetically and then applied the two sequences. Personally I don't really care how we get the order, as long as it's random.

my .02

1. Draft being random order. That is how all the past and future? drafts will be doing.

2 and 3. Start the draft ASAP with no time limit at the start. If the draft stalls, then we add a time limit later.

4. That is fine with me. All the other drafts that I had here used that time interval.

1. Random #s

2/3. I'm for no time limit or 8 hrs until whatever date and then to an 8 hour clock depending on how quickly things have moved. 2 hours is way too short. I don't have access at work any longer. I'd prefer not to do the whole 2nd half of the draft through Q's because I was working or on the golf course. Of course adjustments would have to be made if things move too slow. I'd like to go no less than 4 hours at any time during the draft.

4. My preference would be 8am to 11pm. I work at night and would rather not see 6am unless its unless I'm coming from the nightime side of it ;). And I think thats way too early for the west coasters. 11pm is just my personal preference. I can live with whatever hours are decided.

If we have a 6 hour clock I dont see a problem with the 6AM to midnight.
I live on the west coast so it wouldnt be that I would be in danget of being skipped even if my turn started before 6AM (3AM local).
Most of us check the draft before and after work.
If it isnt our turn to pick then we should all have our next pick in the Q.
The key is for the commissioner to identify those who time out/use the full clock and get them to use the Q for the upcoming pick.

Just to clarify... you got it right in post 31 judy, and that is how the other RIFC leagues will be doing it. I personally enjoy picking/drafting my draft slot, but I'm fine with anything.

I really like the to have some time limit tho even early on 8,10,12,24 hrs. it doesn't matter, but if you're behind someone with no queue (or someone who drops out as a few have in other AA drafts),it's nice to have some idea of when you need to check in.

You're doing a great job judy and once we get moving on the draft it gets a lot easier.

1 - I like the idea of drafting the draft positions.

2/3/4 - I live overseas (ET + 7) so a 2 hour clock is way too quick for me. I will use the que as much as I can but I think 6 or 4 hours is better to give everyone a chance to feel the draft and change plans according to position runs and stuff like that, especially in the early and middle rounds.

Thanks Bonka

Last time for "chimers" is 9 pm EDT tonight (to give PDT+ time
to get home and see the threads for today).

If there are no major objections, then #1 will be "on the
clock" (untimed) to choose a draft slot.

I will keep checking in and email you when you are next on the
list.

Use this thread to make your choices so everyone can see what's
happening.

I am away from the computer for a few hours -- will check back
in ~ 6 pm EDT.

Dumb question but:

Does ET + 7 mean you are ahead of ET (Europe) or behind ET
(Hawaii)?

I sent Team 13 (pops, I think) an email and will do the same for
Team 8 (matt/psychos, I think) when it is his turn.

I am checking every 10 min tonight -- until the Phillies game is
over or 11:30 whichever is later...

to draft a player instead of a position!

OK time for bed. (Phils won 11-1. Moyer was awesome. Ryan
hit two.)

You guys are on your own to keep going on the draft order
choices. I will be away from a computer until the afternoon EDT.

Here are some suggestions if you are on the wait list.

1) If you want the next highest pick, no matter what it is, post
that wish and trust that a guy behind you will do it for you.
2) If you want something special, like 10 or later highest to
lowest, post that and trust.
3) If you want the lowest, etc.

Plan to check the thread at least once a day from now on. Twice
is better!

Leave messages here on the thread so people can see them.

With any luck we will finish the draft position choices by
tomorrow night (Tuesday). I’ll put them into kafenatid as soon
as the list is complete and send out an email to begin an
untimed draft for those who might know whom they want and it
is their turn.

That said, I know that some managers want to wait until the Mon
and Tues pre-season games are over to draft a player. That’s
OK too!

Right now I anticipate beginning the untimed player draft this
Wednesday, August 8th -- somebody suggest a start time EDT.

After the preseason games are over -- Wednesday, August 15th
-- we will follow the lead of the other leagues and use a 6 hour
clock and that should be enough to get us started and to cover
all our time zones. Queue lists should help here.

You should be ready to set up queues or be able to get on a
computer so we can keep the draft going. Hopefully not too
many rounds will use the entire 6 hour limit. If it gets close to
crunch time, we might need to shorten it.

If anyone has any other thoughts, please post them here.

OK, I'm off to bed. (Phils won again. Dontrelle was wild and that
helped us a lot.)

Hopefully, the last manager will choose his slot tonight or
tomorrow am.

When that happens, I'll load the order into Kafenatid and start
the draft. I'll also start a new/clean thread. Check here for the
link. This will not happen until afternoon EDT on Thursday.

The player draft will be untimed and run 24 hours, until after the
last pre-season game on Tuesday unless we decide otherwise.
After that it will be 6 hours and go 6 am to midnight EDT -- that
is what the others are doing as best I can tell.

As a matter of courtesy, if you are "on the (untimed) clock" and
do not plan to draft until after a certain time/game, please post
that information on the thread so the rest of us aren't getting
too eager. Also if you are out and about, leave a queue if you
wish to.

You all are great to work with! Keep checking the thread for
updates though...
