19.01 Antwaan Randle El, WR, WAS
I drafted him last year… and decided to draft him yet again.
In comparison to last year, I see a few more positives:
1) He starts the year as the #2WR (Last year he was #3).
2) Better Offense: It's now the 2nd year for Al Saunders relatively complicated offense. Most players should be more "in-sync" with the system.
3) QB Upgrade: There is no uncertainty with the QB position. Campbell had his chance to get broken in last year, and isn't nearly as "passive" as "undrafted".
Now after saying all that... how "bad" was Randle El last year? 38th WR. As the 65th WR taken... I'd like to take a second to mention something... while I find it true that return yardage won't have nearly as much impact on several key players as it had in previous years, there are still some players who have "extra value" due to this... and that should NOT be ignored. My WRs 3-5 (Jennings/Welker/Randle El) all benefit from PR duties.

PS. I'll stop with the best picks... it's do difficult to differentiate at this point.

19.02 Dwayne Jarrett, WR, CAR

Jarrett's got a good shot at becoming the starter opposite Steve Smith since neither of the other guys Carolina has started has looked too good in the preseason. If that were to occur, he should outperform his draft position without any trouble. If not, there's always the waiver wire.

19.03 Reuben Droughns RB NYG

Heaven forbid I ever have to actually use Droughns.

Jacobs has yet to prove that he can carry the load of a full time back. I think the Giants will try to keep his carries around 20 per game. That means Droughns could see a dozen carries a game or so. In the event of a Jacobs injury (not hard to imnagine) Droughns would most likely become the starter. So, I think 19th rd was far enough for him to fall.

It is getting to the point in the draft where I was just looking to fill holes. Vinatieri is a highly accurate kicker who plays on a high scoring team with a dome for a home stadium.

19.05 D'Qwell Jackson, LB, CLE

Who couldn’t use more players named D’Qwell? “D” played in 13 games last year and finished with 93 tackles. He will be the starting MLB on a defense that should see the field quite a bit.

Getting to that point in the draft.
He is the number 3 in San Diego, but does also run back punts.
Not sure of how bad Turner is hurt, but at this point in this draft, felt it was good use just in case.
He can always be dropped and turned into somebody I can use later.
Otherwise, he sure can run.
Has looked really good in the preaseason.

19.08 Shaun Phillips, LB SD

I wanted to draft Phillips as a DL but I will gladly take him as a LB as well. He is the prototypical pass-rushing, big-play linebacker who compliments Merriman in the San Diego defense. Because he thrives on the big play, he wont be as consistent as some of the more tackling linebackers, but he should still give me good points from week to week.

19.09 Derrick Burgess

I figured that I should fill up this position while I still had some control into who I picked and not go with just whomever was left on the board. I had my heart set on Will Smith, but was one round too late. So my consolation prize is Derrick Burgess. He had over 50 total tackles last year, but complemented this with 11 sacks and 2 safeties. I am expecting Oakland's D to be on the filed a lot this year (as it was last year) which should translate into a lot of opportunities for Mr. Burgess.

Filling out my IDP corps. Not a lot of tackles, but double digit sacks. This will be just his 2nd year, and as a rookie last year he came on strong in the second half with 8 sacks in the second half of the season.

19.11 Jesse Chatman, RB, MIA
Chatman is currently listed as the #2 RB on the Dolphins depth chart. with s_r as the Ronnie Brown owner picking 2 times until I am up again, I had to take him before he does it. I like stealing away backup RB of other managers. as far as I remember I did it twice to Guru last year.

back to Chatman, this is what sportline.com is thinking about him:
Chatman is competing with Brown to be the starter, but it appears Brown has the edge to win the job. Still, Chatman could have value as a reserve Fantasy option and is worth taking in the later rounds in most drafts. It's obvious Dolphins coach Cam Cameron likes Chatman, who was with Cameron in San Diego when Cameron was the offensive coordinator.

haha, competing with Brown for the starting gig? the last time I looked they both played for Miami and not for Denver, where this is common. If this really comes true I just took the Maurice Jones-Drew of 2007. if not I am hoping that Chatman gets some balls on the ground, some through the air and even some on special teams.

as I said in my last rationales: gamble, gamble, gamble. my list of gambles is currently 26 entries long. lets see how much of them will still be on it in a round or two.

Ho hum. I needed a DL and he was at the top of my list. I am just hoping for 4-6 ppg out of him, which he should be able to do. He isn't a sack monster, but he gets tackles, which is the consistency I am looking for out of my DL.

19.13 Chris Carr, DB, Oak

I always like having at least one DB kick/punt returner on the squad. DB's are seldom the sure thing on defense for scoring points (unlike LB's). The exception is returners. Although Carr doesn't have the upside of McGee in that he doesn't see regular time on defense, he will be a good fill-in when needed. And playing for Oakland, he should get his fair share of kick returns.

The Bears didn’t draft Olsen to watch from the bench. He has the raw stuff to eventually be an offensive star.

Jones is expected to be the short-yardage/goal-line running back for Jacksonville this season = potential for a lot of touchdowns but little yards or receptions. Bye week fill-in.

My plans were to get Trent Green with this selection, but those were foiled by holt. So, back to the drawing board. Jackson is the best of the remaining options, but faces the Bears in the week I need him. Oh well, I still think he's a better option than what else is out there. If Jackson starts out strong, he could be trade bait. But, I'm not going to win this league if I have to rely on the backup I have for Manning anyways.

20.03 Seattle Seahawks, D

(Note: I actually took the Seahawks at 19.12 and Justin Smith here, but I accidently flopped them in my rationale posting).

Unless you have the Ravens or Bears, having a good 2nd Defense can work to your advantage greatly as it is a high scoring position if you play the right matchups. Adding the Seahawks to my Steelers gives me a very good complimentary force at this position. The Seahawks defense is typically high scoring, as they generate lots of turnovers, sacks, and an occasional TD, particularly at home. I am just looking for a couple high scoring games out of them and am very happy with this pick.

20.04 Maurice Hicks, RB, SF
I like picking up guys that are returners for their team and also see some playing time on offense/special teams. Hicks is such a guy. He is sharing backup duties to Frank Gore who is coming back from a broken hand injury, so there is the possibility that he will see more touches until Gore's hand is back to 100%. what Hicks really is good for, is his return yardage. Last year, in games where he was the primary kick returner, he scored 5 points alone out of that job. I'll take that if I really have to play him in any given week. 5 points are better than hoping that a different backup-RB gets some carries the week I need them.

Hicks bye is in week 6 and that was a week where I have no other bye of a RB so he is a perfect fit for that as well.

I guess, unless someone presents itself, this is the last RB I took in this years draft.

20.05 Matt Wilhelm, LB, SDG

From what I’ve read, he’s slated to start in Donnie Edwards' slot in San Diego. A calf injury has hindered his preseason, however, and he may not be ready to start in week 1. He’s my 7th IDP, so I don’t need him healthy for the first week, but in retrospect, this might have been a suboptimal pick. On the other hand, in the 20th round there isn’t much downside risk.

20.06 Dallas Clark, TE, IND

I figured it was time for me to pick up a substitute TE before I hated everyone left on the board. To me, Clark was by far the most appealing TE left of the remaining choices. Manning definitely has many targets that he can hit in the red zone, but he does give Clark his fair share of looks. With Indy’s defence weaker than it was last year (IMHO), I am expecting Manning to throw the ball around a lot. Clark had a bit of an injury during the last pre-season game, but I believe it is only a leg bruise. Clark is good enough to start and I expect that I will start him more often than to just fill in Smith’s bye week. I think he is great value in the 20th round.

20.07 Kansas City Chiefs, DEF

I had Dallas Clark targeted for this pick, but alas. So went with my secondary target, Kansas City, as my second defense. The Chiefs have added alot of players on defense in the offseason, including Donnie Edwards, and the younger guys are gaining more experience. Also, as with the Broncos, their schedule is favorable. For example with this combo I will have a chance to go up against the Raiders four times, Green Bay twice, Minnesota twice, and Chicago twice.

As I commented in the Oakland Rationale, I planned all along to play matchups much as I did last year with my two defenses.
This team has what I view as the easiest schedule in the League.
Based on that, I do expect them to surprise a lot of people on the defensive side of the ball.
They won't be a power house, but should be usable.

20.10 Bo Scaife, TE, TEN

I wasn’t ready to draft my crappy backup DEF yet. I have been watching Scaife all preseason and have been impressed with the way that VY and TEN use him in the passing game. Who knows Scaife could be a viable option at WR/TE if the Titans feature the TE in their offence during the season. I wouldn’t be surprised if he led the Titans in receptions.

Rotoworld says "Zach Thomas isn’t getting any younger, and Crowder could come into his own during 2007. Needed more depth at WR - especially now that reports are coming out that Holt's knee isn't 100%. OMG, no.

20.13 Atlanta Falcons, DEF, ATL

In my opinion, there are two positions that are overrated in nearly every draft - kicker and defense. Year after year, we see kickers and defenses that are highly drafted underperform this slot, but it never fails that next year people look at their value sheets and take them too early.

This is because kicker and defense performance as measured in fantasy football are essentially unpredictable. In fact, I read a study recently that stated that after evaluating several expert ranking lists, it was determined that kicker prediction was actually worse than if players had been randomly ordered.

A similar problem exists with team defense, in that factors such as touchdowns and fumble recoveries are simply not predictable from year to year. Just last year, I picked my two defenses in the 20s and ended up with Philly and New England, who ended up both playing very well.

Having said all that, I had two defenses left in my top 14 and I figured my other guys I wanted could wait a bit longer, so I took Atlanta first since they had a slightly higher ADP on my list. I'm not sure that they'll be any good, but that's what the waiver wire is for anyway.

Best available SS on the board. His ADP would suggest that he should have gone rounds and rounds ago, and I had seriously considered taking him at 15.01 when I took Dawkins. Oddly enough, there has been a "drought" of DBs selected over the last 4 rounds (only 4).

My LB insurance policy. Should one of my higher rated LBs go down, I don't want the scraps that are left on the waiver wire. Also, due to bye week limitations, I had to hold an extra IDP. I value LBs a fair bit higher than DBs, as it would appear most other managers in our league do... so I'm guessing we won't soon see a wholesale dump off the 50+ that have been selected so far. His value is he's 3-down WLB, that racks up the tackles. I'm only expecting slight improvement over his rookie numbers, but that should be more than acceptable.

Seems strange to see June going this late in a draft, but it's understandable. He's playing stong-side LB in Tampa (though he explains that in many situations the Tampa strong-side is basically the same as the weak-side in Indy, fwiw).

All news I see on him is positive, and he did have 142 tackles last year (96 unassisted). It's like that duck shooting game at the carnival. June was the biggest duck I saw so I took the shot.

Pretty much just a complete flier. I am really rolling the dice at RB in this league - if Jones and Williams get hurt or end up with the lesser RB role in their "RBBT" (RB by tandem) systems, I'm pretty much out of luck. Faulk had over 600 return yards last year, and if something happens to Maroney, maybe Faulk will have some value.

I waited long for my 6th starting IDP because after the good ones are gone the rest is interchangable and only the regular season will show us if they play as much as we think they are.

Dan Morgan is such a kind of guy. missing nearly all of 2006 he is eased back into the game. he is listed as starter in the middle which usually translates to the most tackles (=points) for IDPs. if he can stay healthy all year (am I that crazy to think of that?) this could be a steal. this is what we are trying to get with these late round picks.

Well, I'd been planning to get my kicker here, and planning, actually to get Nate Kaeding. I probably should have taken him before sR picked, but didn't. I suppose it was because there is not much a dropoff for kickers and I didn't want to get one too early (stupid, I know considering I waited three picks later). But, the thought was to get one before a potential run started and I was left without a kicker from a high-powered offense.

postcript: Of course, after the fact, in last night's MNF game, who would get hurt? of course, the idiot kicker (no, not Mike Vanderjadt, but Shayne Graham). Apparently Graham has a hip pointer which may throw his status in question. This caused me to burn a pick on another kicker in the final round.

So, instead of wasting time and trying to find some sort of diamond in the rough that I'd probably drop anyhow before they became a diamond, I just used this pick on a kicker. Mare, a usually accurate kicker moves to the Saints' dome and high powered offense. If there was such a thing, I would call him the sleeper kicker of 2007. I look for him to be up there with Wilkins and Vinitiari due to their identical situations (high powered offenses and home dome).

22.04 Saints defense

we all need a 2nd defense, right? If I remember correctly I needed a defense from waivers last year and there were only scrubs left. even a scrub-defense with a favorable matchup does not put up the points in our scoring format.

I expect New Orleans to be not one of the scrubs. they don't allow that many yards than other defenses and are average in sacks and turnovers. as long as the Saints offense is on the field the defense can not lose any points. that will help too.

Go Saints!

Considine is more of a homer pick but I really think he will put up good fantasy numbers. He took (Undrafted)'s job in the middle of the season last year - a player who had a pretty good track record himself. In his last 6 games last year he averaged 8.5 points per game. He should be a high-tackling safety so the numbers should be fairly consistent. I wouldnt mind starting him on more than just bye week fillers.

22.08 Jason Snelling, RB, Atl

The guy that wasn't even in the database. A sure fire sign that he's everybody's sleeper pick. A lot has been made of Norwood breaking out this year and Dunn breaking down. Not sure where Snelling fits into the equation but has shown so good signs this preseason. Also, I love 3rd string RB's.

More of a gut choice pick than anything else.
And if it too much of a stretch, then I'll drop him and find another warm body.
This is a case of a cornerback being switched to Free Safety.
I expect his playing time to increase every week.
Strictly a back up and we shall see.

22.11 Madieu Williams, DB, CIN

When the draft got to this point, I looked at my list and said "I can't believe *still undrafted* is still undrafted!", and then noticed Madieu 3 spots above that guy. He is a nice backup to Gibril (and also evidence of how stupid my Gibril pick was, since Madieu is very similar and still available 10 rounds later) and can serve as a viable IDP flex during bye weeks if I need him. I expect 70 solo, 20 assists, 10 PD, and a few INT to get him into triple digits. Like most of my IDP-fliers, he's young (25) so there may be some upside. And you can never have too many Williamses on your team, at least I hope not.

22.13 Stephen Gostkowski, PK, NE

Despite my diatribe above about kickers and defenses, anytime your #1 guy is still on the board at this point of the draft, you've got to take him. The Patriot offense looks strong this year, and at a minimum he should get a lot of extra points (preferably off of Stallworth touchdowns).

Since IAC needed a kicker, I wanted to make sure I'd get the guy I wanted as I didn't expect my next pick to get taken by IAC or my last rounder to get taken by anyone.

22.14 Matt Stover, PK, BAL
Seven kickers are already off the board, and along with DL is the only starting slot I have left to fill. Stover's one of those elite kickers who rarely disappoints. Baltimore's general conservative style leads to lots of FG attempts. Stover is pretty much a shoe-in to finnish in the top-10 kickers.

23.01 Kyle Vanden Bosch, DL, TEN
He's actually not the top DL on my queue sheet, but his bye week worked out better for my teams regular season strategy. I'll be in need, of 1 spot that I can use to rotate replacements for DL in week 4, TE in week 6, and K in week 8. Other than that, I should be adequately backed up for byes at least.

23.02 Demetrius Williams, WR, BAL

Last year, I took Doug Gabriel in round 23 and he turned out to actually be rather useful as he was a component of a trade later that helped some other positions. History may have repeated itself, as Williams has the high risk/reward dynamic that I like at this point in the draft.

23.04 Maurice Stovall, WR, TB

Stovall is as much of a late-round flier as you'll ever see. Lot of hype, bad pre-season, lousy team, but yet seems to have a lot of potential and could wind up with a starting job. I feel like I'll know pretty quickly whether he is worth a spot on my roster, which is what I like to look for in the last few rounds. Nothing like being stuck with a team full of big name mediocrity that you can't bring yourself to part with.

I needed a Dunta to go with my D’Qwell.

I actually like his tackle numbers, if he could increase his INT’s he could be a top fantasy DB. Most likely he will be just a bye week starter.

I remember back in the day when the Bucs were perennial top 5 defense. A lot has changed. I really don't plan on starting them but if the Chargers defense falls apart I guess they would be nice to have rather than some FA defense.

23.09 David Akers, K, PHI

What can I say. We all need a kicker, and their scoring depends majoritarily on the team's performance. So I was trying to guesstimate - of the teams left - who will be able to move the ball up and down the field and go impotent near the end zone. If I were to know these things, well, I'd be living in Vegas right now. But since I don't have a crystal ball, I just went for a guy that usually does not disappoint and posts solid numbers. The only thing that I don't like is that he plays outside. However, I couldn't find anyone I liked that was "domed".

23.10 Josh Brown, K, Sea

I want a kicker who should be stable, has a history of decent production, and has a bye that’s on the later end. Brown satisfies all three criteria. There were a few kickers left with byes in week 9 & 10, but I thought Brown would be a better producer, and round 8 is late enough.

Colbert is slated to be the starting wide receiver for the Panthers. at least for week 1. he may be the first one to see the waiver wire as I will need a kicker for week 1 after not drafting one.

not very excited about him. lets see how he progresses. from todays point of view any non-injured starting kicker is more valuable than him.

23.12 Morlon Greenwood, LB, HOU

I figured I should get at least one IDP for my bench and am fine with Greenwood. He was solid last year and he will be playing WLB for Houston. I expect Houston's defense to be on the field a lot once again, and if extra attention is put towards DeMeco Ryans this year, that should open more opportunities for Greenwood

23.14 Ty Warren, DL, NE
He's a guy who picks up the run while excelling at getting to the QB. His 2006 breakout is a sign of more great things to come.

24.01 Brandon Moore, LB, SF

Case in point why you should wait to draft kickers. My 22nd round pick of Shayne Graham got hurt in last night's game. With the potential he would miss game one, I grabbed Scobee here. Depending on Graham's health, I may drop Scobee. This way I didn't tip my hand on the hidden gem I was going to draft. Yeah... that's it..

24.03 Sammy Morris, RB, NE

I wanted to take one more RB, and knowing that this would be the first guy I dropped after week 1, I tried to take a guy that I thought had the biggest chance to be the starter in Week 2 (thus making me not able to drop him). I don't think he will take Maroney's spot, so, my only rationale was based on injury risk. If Maroney goes down, Morris will fill in nicely for New England as he has all preseason. If Maroney doesn't go down, then Morris will likely be dropped. It just seemed pointless to me to pick up someone I might like in Week 6-7 as my last pick, because I knew I wouldn't hold onto him that long.

24.04 David Martin, TE, MIA
I don't like the Dolphins, but he is the 5th player I picked from them. am I crazy? I don't think so because that means that I followed one rule for drafting: don't go crazy about players/teams you like.

David Martin is the unquestioned #1 TE in Miami and the 4th option behind Brown, Chambers and Booker. a few years back the new Dolphins coach created a star in Antonio Gates. Martin is not that great of an athlete, but still good enough to fill in as a backup TE and possibly as a backup WR because of our new WR/TE slot.

24.05 James Jones, WR, GB

I had two fliers on my short list for this pick. Sammy Morris disappeared two picks ago, leaving Jones. (I’d probably have taken Jones anyway.)

Jones has done well this month, and has moved up to the 3rd WR at Green Bay, behind Driver and Jennings. He first caught my attention when Driver got hurt, and even though it appears that Driver’s injury will not impact the regular season, Jones should get some action this year, as Favre likes to throw it around and Green Bay may find itself in a lot of games where it has to.

Grasping at straws here really. I wanted another WR and thought about getting someone useful right away, but this more of a pure upside pick. He will probably have the 3rd WR spot on a loaded NO offense, and if there is an injury he will get a decent amount of playing time. I can afford to stash him on the bench and wait to see what happens.

Lots of people seem to think that is when a player makes his biggest improvement.

I may go through a half dozen DL this year. I don't have much respect for the position fantasy-wise. In the past I've swicthed different guys in and out all season, just looking to spot-start good matchups.

This guy has a lot to prove. He is the reason why Reggie Bush isn't playing in Houston. If he doesn't crank it up several notches he could be chased out of town by the general public like Frankenstein's Monster or something. This is something I found appealing.

High risk/Medium reward pick. He's kinda like the Dan Morgan of DLs. IF he's healthy, you can count on him to put up impressive #s. In the last 5 years, only twice has he played in 15+ games. When he did, he finnished top 10 in DL scoring. I just need him to stay healthy for a few weeks, and then he'll become waiver wire fodder.
