Subject: Super Bowl XVII

  Posted by: Pancho Villa - [47161721] Sun, Jan 20, 2008, 22:35

Anyone like the G-Men straight up?
Probably not, but that's why there's point spreads. San Diego beat the spread today, which I thought was too high(14 in my morning rag).
I'm thinking the opening line will be around 9 or 10, O/U around 47.
Then there's always the ridiculous bets that only the Super Bowl offers. A few years ago I bet that Kobe Bryant would score more than the SB final.

So, prognosticate away!

mbj - 13 & 53 sounds pretty good to me. What happened to the "Dallas gets no respect" thread. Had my line prediction of SB possibilities in there.

The Giants are different - Since the league went to 8 divisions and 4 wild card teams in the playoffs in 1990, no team had made it to the Super Bowl with 6 losses. Not sure about prior to 1990.

Have a team with no losses and one with most in at least last 18 years.

The spread will start around 13 or 14 but I suspect by the time the Super Bowl rolls around, it may dip into the high single digits.

Although I expect the Pats to win, it would not surprise me that much if the Giants end up victorious, let alone beating the spread.

I don't understand why the spread continues to favor New England so much as they're only 1-8 against the spread in the last 9 weeks. The Patriots are not nearly as dominant as they were in the beginning of the season when they would routinely win by 20+ points.

The spread is not how much they think the Pats will win by. The spread is what they think will get 50% of people betting on each side.

Da Bomb, you are correct in your assumption, but the betting public still sees the "aura" of the Pats and think they are unstoppable, which record wise they are, but not dominating points wise.

Magic #: 28. If the Giants can hold the Pats to a couple FG's and keep them under 28, I think they'll be in a position to win it.

The Patriots allow teams to drive down the field, but stop them cold in the redzone. I.E. San Diego, Jacksonville (when it mattered most), and the G-Men need to convert those opportunities.

I take the G-Men (to cover) and the Over.

I don't think Moss likes playing in the cold. Playing in Gkendale against NY's CB should make him happy.

Regardless of the outcome, you have to tip your hats to Tom Coughlin / Steve Spagnuolo for the job they have done with that makeshift secondary.

For as much scrutiny Coughlin is in every week with the NY Media (about as equal of criticism as Chicago Media had for "Wrecks" Grossman); they have done a fine job.

Spread seems to be down to -12.5 or -12 now.

Bet with both hands.

I expect New England will win by 35 or 40 points. Now you can't bet based on an expectation like that, but that's what I expect.

i'm rooting for the giants. it's a matter of nurture vs nature. i naturally hate the giants. but my hatred of the patriots has been nurtured by their obnoxious fans - it's the same reasons i hate the yankees.

Giants win 24-21.

I've always enjoyed using Sagarin Ratings when it comes to this sort of discussion. In fact, I used a little rules method to come out at about a 75% win rate for "bets" over this past year. I only actually gambled for the week I was out in Vegas, but using my rules still had me came out ahead that week.

That said, Sagarin would have the following result, assuming no home-field advantage:

NWE 38.57 - 28.13 NYG (-10.44)

This actually wouldn't fit into my rules for the spread, but would certainly fit into my rules for the O/U. My only bet would be the Over (54).

But, I'd lean towards NYG covering with NWE winning.

The Most Ridiculous Super Bowl XLII Props
There are plenty of props concerning the game on the field next Sunday. Who will score first, who'll be the MVP, even who will commit the first holding penalty. But it's the Super Bowl- who cares about the actual game? There are much more important things going on.

I looked around a few places for the best non-football props, but ended up only needing two sites- BetUS and Bodog. The following are the seven most ridiculous types of props I found. I tried to break down what the best wagers are, but I probably failed miserably.

7. How long will it take Jordin Sparks to sing the National anthem? (Bodog)

Over 1m42s (-115)
Under 1m 42s (-115)
Sparks sang the Anthem at last year's NBA Finals. It's on YouTube- it looks like she took 1:41. Darren Rovell analyzed this same line for Billy Joel last year, and noticed this:

"I looked at every Super Bowl national anthem YouTube could offer me. And guess what? Not one singer, at least what's online, has ever done the National Anthem at the Super Bowl under 1:44."
He goes on to note that Cher did it in 1:45, Mariah Carey in 1:55, Faith Hill at 2:00, and Beyonce in 2:09. These Super Bowl performers apparently add some extra "yeahs" and such- it looks like the Over would be a decent look here.

6. Commercial Props (Bodog)

BetUS has some boring ones, like the first ad during halftime (Bud Light and Go Daddy are both 4:1). But Bodog got creative:

Which Super Bowl commercial will have a higher rating on USA Today's annual Ad Meter?
Budweiser 1:2
Go Daddy.com 3:1
Pepsi 6:1
McDonald's 9:1
Victoria Secret 8:1
Other 2:1
Looks like Budweiser is the reigning champ. I'm assuming Budweiser includes Bud Light; those two combined to have six of the top seven ads last year. So it makes sense that Bud is the overwhelming favorite.

5. TV Broadcast Props (Bodog)

How Many Times will Joe Buck mention Peyton Manning's name during the Broadcast?
Over 5.5 (-125)
Under 5.5 (-115)

How many times will Archie Manning be shown on the TV Broadcast?
Over 4.5 (-150)
Under 4.5 (+110)

Will the entire Fox pre-game team pick the Patriots to win the Super Bowl?
Yes -180
No +140
I don't really understand the Peyton prop. If Buck says "Eli's brother, Peyton, won the Super Bowl last year. Manning...", does that count as one or two? I don't know.

For the pre-game picks prop, I'd have to go with "No". How many people are there on the set, four? I would think one of them will go against the grain, if only to make things interesting. Terry Bradshaw picked the Giants last week, so he'd be the one to do it.

Update: Lozo makes an excellent point in the comments:
"no. 5 being no is a lock. only because whoever works the giants locker room after the game will take the giants. that's the only reason bradshaw took the giants last week, and he'll probably do it again this week."

4. '72 Dolphins Props (Bodog)

If the Patriots win, will Bob Kraft mention the '72 Dolphins during the Trophy Presentation?
Yes (-135)
No (-105)

Will Don Shula be on the field to shake Belichick's hand after the game?
Yes +200
No -300
Why would Kraft mention the '72 Dolphins? They really haven't done anything to deserve a mention. I'd lean towards "No" on that first one.

I'm assuming Shula lives in Florida? Why would he go to the game in Arizona just to shake Belichick's hand? I guess that's why "No" is -300.

3. Who will the MVP of the Game thank first? (Bodog)

Teammates, 2:1
God, 5:2
Family, 2:1
Coach, 5:1
Doesn't thank anyone, 6:1
I looked around Google for Brady's acceptance speech the two times he's won the award, but couldn't find it. I actually think betting on the first two wouldn't be a bad idea, I would imagine it'd end up being one of those.

2. Colour of liquid winning Head Coach is doused in (BetUS)

Transparent +400
Green +500
Yellow +300
Orange +125
Red +300
Blue +1000
Purple +1600
I don't really have any insight to add here. This one is pretty awesome, though.

1. Tom Petty Props (BetUS)

Petty will be performing at halftime. There are the standard props on this sort of thing- what song he will open with (Running Down A Dream is the favorite at BetUS), and end with (Free Falling is 2:3 at Bodog). But those pale in comparison to the random props BetUS has thought up:

Tom Petty...
smokes a joint during half time show +2500
has a wardrobe malfunction +10000
streaks field during play +50000
will smash a guitar onstage +5000
will curse during performance +8000
I'm confused as to how the joint prop is the most likely. Tom Petty cannot smoke a joint during his performance. It's just not a possibility. Also, what exactly would a Tom Petty ""wardrobe malfunction" consist of? I don't think I want to know.

He could curse. But because of the "wardrobe malfunction" thing, they've got a delay now. So if he curses, but it gets edited out, what happens? There are just so many unanswered questions here.

Update: I e-mailed BetUS about the cursing thing, here's the response I got:
"Dear Jacob, Thank you for your question. For it to be graded as a winner, Tom Petty cursing needs to be shown either on tv, on the newspaper the day after, internet, etc. The point is, it needs to be of public knowledge that he did for you to win that bet. Regards, Rick Account Manager"
I think this is good news for this bet. It'll be all over the internet if he curses, even if it's not broadcast.

Update 2: The odds on two of the Tom Petty props have been adjusted. The joint one is now +4000, and cursing is down to +5000. I'd like to think that this post had something to do with that.

will curse during performance +8000

3. Who will the MVP of the Game thank first? (Bodog)

How Many Times will Joe Buck mention Peyton Manning's name during the Broadcast?
Over 5.5 (-125)

How many times will Archie Manning be shown on the TV Broadcast?
Over 4.5 (-150)

Will the entire Fox pre-game team pick the Patriots to win the Super Bowl?

I'm a big fan of a simple chilli or taco dip.
Coat the bottom of the pan with cream cheese - then either some chilli or browned ground beef w/ taco seasoning... then top it with some nacho cheese. Throw it in the microwave til all the cheese melts and its good to go.

Easiest recipe in the world, you can even bring it over to a friends house cold cause you just gotta throw in the microwave a few minutes and its perfect.
The cream cheese always throws people off though... I guess cause it doesn't make sense and in your mind you are thinking sour cream.

Would a Giants win be biggest upset in Super Bowl history?

Nice breakdown of different ways to look at it historically.

By spread, it would not beat the Jets [+18] over Baltimore. Next [and 'Modern era']: NWE [+14] over STL Super Bowl XXXVI

Margin of Victory differential [teams season MOV] - would shatter current high. Only three times [and once since 1967] has MOV delta been more than 8 [max 8.5, Jets over Colts]. In 2001 the NE Patriots [+6.2] beat the STL Rams [+14.3], a delta of (-8.1)

NWE is +19.7, NYG +1.4 [delta of -18.3]

Regualr season win / winning percent approach.

Since 1967 [3.5 delta in wins], the max the winning team has had is 3 less wins. 2001, New England Patriots (11-5) 68.8% St. Louis Rams (14-2) 87.5% [-3 winds, -18.8%]

I wonder if the if the hit that Brady took when he fumbled had any effect on his throwing. He had no touch on the ball, and accuracy was terrible. He was stepping into the throw, and his arm was stopped dead. Can't do good for an arm. Congrats to Giants and their fans.

Also, wasn't impressed with the time keeper at the end. Really messed up the time, didn't start the clock after the measurment, and when the play was run. At the Super Bowl, stuff like that should not happen.

Are you really surprised that the Arizona Cardinals' clock operator couldn't operate the clock effectively. It isn't like Bidwell is known for paying for the best. And with past experiences for the Cardinals, would anyone ever notice that the clock wasn't operating correctly.

Congrats to the Giants, you have done a great service to humanity.

this is what i said in this thread:

Giants win 24-21.

not too far off.

in an email to my old college buddies who are Patriots fans (but weren't in the early 90s), this is what i said earlier in the week:

the Giants have been on a roll. the Pats have been struggling - in their last 6 regular season games, three of them were decided by a field goal.

i think the Giants D shuts down brady like they did Romo and Favre. i think Manning continues to play a perfectly coached game.

i wasn't too far off there either...

RE: 69

I thought that the clock was stopped for a measurement for the possible first down. The clock actually ran to 1:22 and had to be reset to 1:28. Then the clock doesn't start again until the referee's signal. They actually didn't have to measure, but it was close enough that they had to stop the clock to assertain that.

So what were the results of the prop bets?

The National Anthem seemed LONG
I think I saw 12 shots of Peyton, only saw dad in the postgame.
Gatorade was clear color
Didn't hear if Eli thanked God or not
What else???

The Giants D was absolutely stupendous tonight. Guess all the Pat's fans will blame this loss on the supermodel, right? :)

Just wondering...if you're Tiki Barber....LOL

Congrats Giants fans! Beating T.B., Dallas, Green Bay and New England in succession shows what kind of mettle this team is really made of.

Guess this means that the 2008 NFL kickoff game will be in Giants stadium this year. Sweet!!!

My MVP vote would have been for David Tyree, though Eli certainly had a great case and as we all know the QB generally wins the MVP--at least lately.

I kept thinking about that prediction--esp. the later it got. You didn't even score 17, Tom!

The Giants D-Line were able to pressure Brady all night...something that I hadn't seen all season.

Btw, I know Tyree was on 3 for 43 and a touch, but that catch chagned the game. If NE had won, I'd also have looked hard at voting (if i had one) for Welker over Brady.

Because Tyree only had 3 catches, and only had 47 yards, he would not have gotten my MVP vote. Plus, Eli accomplished an equally impressive feat as Tyree's catch on the same play by somehow not only not getting sacked, but made a throw that gave his receiver a chance to make a play.

I actually ried to time Jordans rendition...I saw it at 1:52 in length.

While they showed Peyton on camera frequently, they said "Peyton Manning..." 6 times I believe. (3 were in one sentence though. lol)

The dousing was water I think? It was clear, whatever they used.

I LOVED the Victorias Secret ad. Otherwise, I REALLY liked the talking baby e-trade ones.

And Tom Petty, did none of the things listed above. He was superb!!

Had NE won, I'd agree entirely with Welker for MVP. Else, I think the entire NYG D deserves it. Eli got it, I think largely based on the sheer determination he displayed on that last drive, in not getting sacked. Regardless of all else in the game, had he gone down on that one play; it was game over.

I believe the officials, timekeepers, etc are all provided by the NFL. So its a bit hard to blame it on the Cardinals owner.

I thought Petty might have gotten it only because he's old and he voices a character on another FOX show. I thought the show was OK for an oldies show, but the "lighters" (actually, lighter-like flashlights) being waved by the "crowd" (actually, hired extras told to wear dark clothing) in front of the stage was making me gag.

PD, those people on the field in front of the stage were not hired. They were local people being honored in some way or another.

I know this because my girlfriend was invited as a local teacher. They were inviting quality poeple from the local areas.

But yes, those flashlights were awful.

Thanks, Farn. I was told by someone down there that the crowd was essentially hired movers (to move the staging, etc., on & off the field) and that extras were hired to fill in the space. They must have included others, then, which is kind of cool.

Budweiser had the highest rated TV ad. It was the dog training the Clydesdale.

Also Tom Petty didn't curse, but Terry Bradshaw dropped an f-bomb during the last 5 minutes of pre game. It was when Howie was trying to put on a hat and Terry said something about "his huge f---ing head"

Beli is a sore loser, period.

I agree that Tyree's line is hard to give him the MVP, just that the catch was the game. Let's face it, Eli managed to get out of the sack, but he just winged it. Again, I don't have an issue with Eli getting it, but there are others who should have (and may have been in) consideration. As Sarge said, the whole D-Line as a unit were sensational.

Congrats to the Giants and all their fans. Great ending. Eli showed a lot of guts on that final drive, especially when I felt like he was starting to make some bad throws. When he escaped that pass rush and made that unbelievable throw and catch with Tyree, it's like you knew they were going to finish the drive with a TD.

Welker had a great game for the Pats. Best FA addition for any team this year. Moss might have gotten all the attention, but Welker just keeps drives alive.

I wasn't that impressed with many commercials this year and some of them were just bad. Bad enough that I don't even remember what they were for, but I do remember thinking "Who gave the thumbs up to pay suberbowl advertising prices for this crap?"

Yeah Beli has taken a lot of heat for refusing to shake the Colts hands after two defeats last year. Still, Beli's ego gets the ebst of him. I mean why else would you forgo a very makable 49 yard FG and go for it on 4th and 13?!?! I'd easily give up 7 yards if he missed to take that opportunity with my K and his history. The conditions were ideal.

Well you got your wish today. I've listened to and watched a number of sports talk shows, and Belichick's walkoff gets more air time than any other one feature of the game, and the attitude of hosts and callers was indignation. If I heard correctly, Wilbon just suggested on PTI that he should be suspended for it.

Way to go Giants. Most football fans thank you! The Eli to Tyree play will go down as one of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history. I mean I was already amazed that Eli broke free and got a pass off. The catch just made the whole thing unbelievable.

Here's a summary. It doesn't sound that bad when I read it here, but they way he said it, he made it sound like they stomped on New England just like you'd stomp a little bug or something... thats how it came across to me anyway.

Fans chanted "one more year!" when Strahan took the podium, begging the veteran defensive end to return for another season.

Strahan contemplated retirement prior to the season and even sat out training camp.

"One more year?" Strahan asked the crowd with a large smile. "We'll see."

Strahan then shared the Giants' pregame "stomp you out" cheer, even stomping on the stage after declaring his team "stomped the New England Patriots out".

Apparently its just a pregame ritual. Not specifically geared towards the Pacheatriots

Michael Strahan led the crowd in a “Family Circle”, which is how he pumps up his fellow defensive lineman before a game. Strahan showed how in the circle, his defense asks “What are we gonna do?” to which he replies “Stomp them out!”, which is exactly what the Giants did to the New England Patriots. The crowd chanted “One more year!” for Strahan who responded “One more year? We’ll see.”
