This thread will be for managers in the 2011 RotoGuru Invitational Football Challenge to provide the rationale for each pick.
Here are the ground rules: 1. Only managers in this league should post here. If you want to provide feedback (either from other league managers, or from those not in the league), put it in the discussion thread. (Non-conforming discussion in this thread will be deleted.)
2. Please keep the pick rationales in the same order as the draft. We'll attempt to keep this thread 2 rounds behind the actual draft. With the lag, most comments should not have an impact on the draft in progress. However, if there are aspects of your pick that you feel need to be kept under wraps, feel free to protect that information. In particular, please avoid mentioning the names of any players who are still undrafted at that time of the post.
If possible, please post your (2 round lagged) comments at the time you make each pick. If you are not ready to post at that time, then create a "placeholder" so that the next person is able to go ahead in sequence. When your post is ready, simply post it in the draft discussion thread and a moderator can copy it over.
If your rationale is due and intervening placeholders have not been inserted, please insert them before posting your rationale. Simply post in this format:
for Guru 1.06 Michael Vick, QB, Phi
3. Once the draft is over, each manager will also be encouraged to provide a general draft recap, at which time you can discuss your overall strategy, mention any undisclosed factors, comment on what worked out well and what didn't, etc. A separate thread will be set up for that.
The general format should be: 1.01 Adrian Peterson, RB, Min Several sentences of rationale.
As part of your first round rationale, please comment on your selection of draft sequence. |

1.01 Adrian Pederson, RB, Minn I was surprised that he first overall slot was available in my picking slot, 6th. I guess in the second year of banzai drafting, people still feeling it out. I was not hesitant at all to take the first slot, as with what I have read, the value of the slot is still high, even though you pick last in a few rounds.
As for Peterson, I was looking at him all the way. Foster who went 2nd, was interesting, but I liked the consistancy of Peterson. He will be the focal point of the offense in Minny this year too.

1.2
Making the 10th choice for draft pick, I was hopeful to get a top-5 spot. When I took a look at the options (2,4,5,10,11), 2 stood out. I wasn't thrilled with anything in 10/11 area, so it came down to 2,4,5. AP/Foster I had decided were half a tier ahead of Rice, who I had originally targeted. 2.13 seemed like I could still get a quality 2nd round pick. Therefore....
1.2 Arian Foster, HOU, RB Foster has only had 1+ seasons to prove himself in the NFL, but he has earned his top-tier ranking. I didn't look until right now actually, just how dominate Foster was last season. He was a full 75+ points ahead of the 2nd RB last year. If he can produce anything close to that this season, he'll be worth the pick. The QB is proven, the OL is solid, and they just happen to have the top WR in the league drawing a little attention. Love to get 14 total TDs and close to 2000 yards here. I would've been happy with Peterson, had he fallen to me. He has been top 3 consistently for a few years.

for ywk 1.03 Jamaal Charles, RB,
KC I fully anticipated that Foster and All Day would
not be available at No. 3, and thus my pick pretty much came
down between Charles and Chris Johnson. Johnson's contract
impasse, however, made life a little easier. It may be hard
to imagine that Charles could maintain the same efficiency
like he did last year, but hopefully he could carry the ball
more and play more red-zone and goal-line snaps.

Pick #4: I always get stuck in the bottom half of
drafts. #4 was available so I took it. Still didn't know if
I was going to take Rodgers or a running back.
1.04 Aaron Rodgers, QB, GB
Almost took Ray Rice but this could be a huge year for
Rodgers. The Packers should have an improved group of
receivers this year. Rice was probably the correct choice
but last season I said over and over that I was drafting
Rodgers this year. He should be the highest overall point
scorer this year.

0.14 5th pick Easiest pick of the entire draft.
1.05 Ray Rice, RB, BAL I agree with the sentiment that there are five RBs that are head and shoulders above the rest of the field. That is why I was surprised that the five spot was still open. The strategy going forward is pretty simple – take the top-5 guy still on the board and then take the best player available the next 4 rounds. I suspect that means that I will take a receiver in rounds 2 and 3 but I am not going to force it.
I was hoping that CJ2K would not fall to 5 since because of the current hold out. So I got really worried when Charles got picked as I thought he was most likely to slip of the other 4. If Rice had gone at 4, I probably would have gone with Andre Johnson at 5 and this would have been a totally different draft for me.
With #UNDRAFTED# out of the picture to stop vulturing TDs, Rice has a clear path to be the every down back. He’s 24 with a bunch of inexperienced guys to share the load so he should get the bulk of the 20 TDs that went to #UNDRAFTED# in the last 2 years. High floor with #1 potential - sign me up!

Pick 6 I had first choice. I’m sure that’s never happened before. I considered going toward the back end of the draft, but then decided that I would target Vick in round 1. I figured 6 was as late as I could safely wait. Going with the 6th pick also keeps me near the middle of the rounds, so the Banzai effect isn’t significant.
1.06 Michael Vick, QB, Phi Most projection services have Aaron Rodgers as the top QB in total points – but Michael Vick as the tops per game. It seems like everyone assumes he’ll miss 2-4 games, even though last year was the first time he’s missed any significant time as a starter.
If I can get into the playoffs, and Vick is healthy for week 14, then I’m happy with the pick. If he really does miss enough time to dampen my chances, then maybe I should have been more cautious. If Vick had been taken already, I might have taken Rodgers. And if both QBs were taken, then one of the top 4 RBs would have been available.

for youngroman draft pick #7 I think this is the 1st time that I have a high choice selecting my draft position. I don't think that this is an advantage this year. I counted 6 RBs that should go with the 1st few picks. In the hope that 1 manager picks a QB early I took #7 and should get one of those 6 running backs.
I like picking in the middle of the draft. I think the Banzai style even favors picking in the 2nd half, but the result of that would have been that I would have taken different positions early in the draft. The top RBs are still too valuable compared to other positions.
1.07 LeSean McCoy, RB, PHI As expected I get one of my RBs. McCoy was the #5 RB on my list and still available because 2 QBs are already off the board. CJ2K was the other one still available, but with the uncertainty of when he will start his season.
McCoy was a beast last year. over 5 yards per carry. the most valuable RB in the passing game. This can be attributed to Mike Vick because the defense now needs to look for 2 runners that are on the field at the same time. and one of them can even throw the ball to the other one so that he can be very successful. I would like to see a few more TDs from McCoy this year, no matter if he achieves them on the ground or through the air.

for Judy Slot 8 I chose this because slot 6, 7 and 9 were already gone. I like to be in the middle so big runs cannot happen between my picks. At 8 I knew it would be hard to land McCoy and I was right as YR plucked him away in slot 7! If CJ2K had been in camp, I think McCoy would have fallen to me. However, I did not want to go as high as 4 or 5 because then I would have had to take one of the top 5 RB instead of McCoy plus having to wait a ton between picks. So 8 it was and I won from 9 last year, BUT I won because I grabbed the sleeper Foster in round 5. heh heh heh. Not a sleeper any more!
1.08 Andre Johnson WR HOU I decided to shake up my world and draft a WR in the first round. Consistently in the past few years AJ has been one of the top 2-3 WR taken and he has been taken in the first round. (He went 1.12 and 1.08 in AAA and 1.11 in AA.) He is with a pass happy QB and puts up good numbers. I am expecting nothing but lotsa points from him this season.

9th pick: I took the 9th pick because I wasn't as impressed this season with the top talent. After AP I felt like most of the top backs had some question marks. So I was happy to slide down to 9. I picked 9 because I felt there was a drop off of talent after the top 20. #9 allowed me to drop as far down as possible and still pick up two top 20 players. Hope it works out.
1.09 Chris Johnson, RB, TEN It was a choice between Johnson and MJD. I think Johnson is a top 5 RB this year. I don't see him missing any games over the contract situation. They'll get it done just in time. Getting him at #9 seems like a good value.

for Tree Slot Selection: by the time it was my choice, my options were limited. I felt there was enough depth in the top 10 to 12 players, that the difference between 5 and 10 was minimal, and would be made up for in the banzai style of the draft. so i went 10th.
1.10, Rashard Mendenhall, RB, PIT My options here turned out to be even more than i expected. I was torn between Mendenhall, MJD, and McFadden.
Ultimately, i was scared off by MJD's knee surgery. in a league this big, losing your first round RB pick can absolutely destroy your season. that's partially why i shied away from McFadden too. Also, i just don't trust the Raiders. so, Mendenhall won out by default, but i think he's the most reliable option of the three.

for Letter_J 1.11 Maurice Jones-Drew, JAC, RB When I selected the 11-hole, I hoped that Jones-Drew would still be available. [The rest of the rationale concerning why I selected 11th will be posted with the commentary concerning my second-round pick.]
Last year, Jones-Drew finished 7th (average points per game) at RB. He did so while crossing the goal line with the pigskin only 5 times. By contrast, he scored 16 TDs in 2009, and 14 TDs in 2008.
He does come with risk, however, due to the unstable QB position in Jacksonville, and he has an ailing knee this pre-season.

for IAC Slot Selection 12th: Banzai Draft style is 50% of the reason why I aimed at this slot. I really wanted to get the early picks in the 2nd-4th rounds. Also, in looking at the top 3 picks, I didn’t feel they were as “elite”, nor “sure things” as what we normally expect out of the Top RBs. The only downside to this slot, is that I’m sandwiched between two solid drafters in Letter_J (my brother), and Bonka. At least I’m not picking next to Guru, that normally proves quite frustrating.
1.12 Darren McFadden, RB, OAK I was targeting either Mendenhall or McFadden with this pick, so was happy to find him here. I wouldn’t at all be surprised to see him finish in the top 3 RBs by the end of the year because of his well rounded game. He seems to be as low-risk as any 1st round RB can be.

Slot Selection 13: I had the 8th overall selection
and passed on the early picks because I didn't want to have
to choose between the top backs, who I'm not that big on as
in years past. I figured I'd draft last in the 1st and get
an early pick in rounds 2 through 4 and could turn out a
decent advantage during those rounds, especially if I
grabbed a great 1st round pick.
1.13 Frank Gore, RB, SF
I was hoping Mendenhall and Calvin would drop here, but once
4 RBs went in front of me I went with Gore over Calvin,
leaving WR for my round 2 pick, 3 picks later. I like Gore
more than any of the remaining RBs by quite a bit and he
could have another monster season if healthy. He wants a new
contract and Harbaugh wants to feature Gore in the offense,
as he should. He's the kind of guy who could put up a top 5
season, so at 13 overall, I'll take it.

Draft Position 14 I was one of the first to choose my draft position, so I had many selections to choose from. I don't like picking early in a "Banzai" draft order unless there is a big dropoff after the first few picks which I didn't see this year. With picks 1.14 and 2.01 I thought I could draft a reliable RB, and one of my top two QBs. If I had to do it over again, I would have picked 13th.
1.14 Calvin Johnson, WR, DET After pick 1.9 was made, I was hoping that McFadden, Mendenhall, or Gore would fall to me. I thought there was a RB dropoff after these three. When I was unable to get any of these RBs, I had to rethink my strategy. I decided to take a WR because I thought the production of a WR I could get at 3.01 would be significantly less. Johnson was one of the most productive WRs last year with mainly 2nd and 3rd string QBs throwing to him. Johnson has a big upside if Stafford can remain healthy.

2.01 Tom Brady, QB, NE Nine of the top ten performers last season were QBs, so I wanted to pick a reliable top QB early in the draft. Brady and Rodgers are my top two QBs. I do not like Vick as much because I think he is more of an injury risk, and he may regress some this year. Brady has consistently performed as a top QB both with and without a top receiver.

for IAC 2.03 Peyton Hillis, RB, CLE
Reach a little? Maybe, but he’s worth the risk-reward IMHO. The news coming out of Browns camp is that [undrafted 3rd down back] is dealing with turf toe, and that is enough to push Hillis up that little bit extra. Michael Turner and Steven Jackson were also RB considerations here, but I figured I’d go for the higher risk-reward, and try to back him up early. Other players I was targeting prior to the draft: Brady (taken 2.01 - also a reach IMHO), and DeSean Jackson, who I’m really hoping will slide to me at 3.03 (probably not though).

for Judy 2.07 Philip Rivers QB SD I generally do not draft the offensive players from the left coast as their stats do not appear until later Sunday and I have therefore no idea how my team is doing. I wanted either Rodgers or Vick but they went early in round 1 (4th and 6th). I took Brees last year and he drove me nuts with his erratic play so I kept looking down the list and Rivers was next. He tosses the rock a lot, his receivers seem to be healthy this year, he plays in a fair weather stadium. So he was my pick! At this point also, most of the RB left seemed to be RB2 and RB3 so why not pick a QB1?

for youngroman 2.08 Drew Brees, QB, NO I planned to get a 2nd RB here, but the last one I considered here was Michael Turner who went 2 picks earlier. I don't like WRs that early because that did not work for me in the past. It is rare for me to get a QB in round 2, but Brees is the last one from the elite group that was left. Actually Peyton is still available, but we don't know yet if he suits up in week 1.
It is expected that the Saints have a better running game this year, which should help Brees in the passing game. he threw a bit too many interceptions last year. If he reduces them, picking him as the 5th QB is 1 or 2 later than he should.

2.09 Matt Forte, RB, Chi After taking Vick in round one, I need either a RB or WR here. My short list for RB heading into the pick was S. Jax, Turner, and Forte. If they were all gone, I’d have probably gone toward a WR, although I’d have also considered Bradshaw. There still are good bunch of receivers available – of course, those on my short list will probably all disappear in the next 14 picks!
Everything I’ve read seems to portend a statistical repeat of 2010 for Forte, when he averaged 13.4 pts/game. That’d be just fine with me!

2.10 Larry Fitzgerald, WR, AZ I’ve been worrying
about this pick since I got the #5 slot. I first hoped that
Nicks would slide to this spot since TB started with
Rice/Nicks in AAA1. Bonka put a firm stop to that idea early
in round 2. Next on my board was Fitzgerald, although when
Brees kept falling I started to get excited. As usual,
Europeans ruin everything. :)
I have Fitzgerald in the RG14 keeper league so I am a huge
fan. Last year was his absolute floor (barring injury) and
he still put up 150 fantasy points. This year with
#UNDRAFTED# replacing #OUGHT NOT BE DRAFTED#, L-Fitz looks
like a top-5 receiver to me. Another high floor guy with #1
potential and I’m free to take the best player at any
position in the next few rounds.
This has been a tough draft so far and I am just hoping that
Ingram, Romo, or Austin will fall to round 3. I’d be
thrilled with any of those guys.

I think he has a tremendous upside in NO -- one cheat sheet stated that he was “Emmitt Smith like”. I’ll take that -- he was pretty good. He sees the field, is quick and from what I read will be given ~20 touches a game and the GL carries. His size will make him an asset there -- he’s like a 5’9 bowling ball with a low center of gravity -- find me if you can! I think the projections for only 6 -7 TD’s are nuts and way too low. Where do they make up that stuff? He won’t be involved in the passing game, but that’s OK. Ya gotta use the ground to set up the pass even in NO.

Min I thought about a 2nd RB here, but the value
available was not satisfying. Without a WR yet it was time
to pick one. I like having receivers that also get a few
points in the return game. The short list included Percy
Harvin and Dez Bryant. Both have excellent QBs for the
passing game, but Harvin has no major threats that steal
away passes, like Miles Austin and Jason Witten. In the end
that was the difference maker. Even if it means that Harvin
won't be the KR when he is the #1 receiver, as long as he
produces as such.

3.09 Brandon Lloyd, WR, Den I set
up a short queue before heading to bed, with Lloyd, Dez
Bryant, and Mike Williams. I didn’t find the top RBs
compelling at the time, and I had no WR yet. Initially, I
was favoring Bryant, assuming that he’d get some PR yards to
supplement his value. But when researching Lloyd, I noticed
that RotoWire described him as the next “Jose Bautista”,
coming off a career year but essentially getting no respect.
Bautista turned out to be my MVP in the RIBC this year as a
mid-2nd rounder, and this comment seemed like karma. I still
may regret not taking Bryant instead (Beezer took him next),
but Lloyd seems to be currently valued at about a 30%
discount to last year’s production, so I think there is
ample value here.

3.10 Dez Bryant, WR, DAL
Well, so much for my hopes in round 2. And for good measure, I was seriously considering Manning once Romo went off the board and was hoping that Lloyd would fall to 4.10. With the top 7 QBs gone, the top guys are gone and there is no value at this draft pick there. Top RBs on my board are Felix and Best - tempting. Yet I have had much better luck finding good RBs later in the draft or on waivers (Bradshaw, #UNDRAFTED#, and #UNDRAFTED# last year in AAA, for example) so I don’t think that’s the right move here. It would also limit me if somehow there is value at RB in the next couple of rounds as I like to take starters as long as possible. It’s time to swing for the fences since my first two picks were relatively safe.
So that leaves Dez Bryant or Gates. If I was completed sold on Gates’ health, he would be the pick. Last year, he was a ridiculous advantage on my AAA team as after 8 weeks, he was the top TE, scored more than all WRs, and was only topped by the top 6 RBs! Between some likely regression to the mean, the return of V-Jax for the full season, and ascendency of other TEs, I don’t think he is enough of a difference-maker to pass on Bryant.
Bryant is the 7th WR on my board. He has ridiculous talent and is the kind of player that can win games almost single-handedly. That’s a description of my ideal WR2 right there so I’m buying. Plus I never seem to have any Cowboys to root for in these leagues and it’s time to change that.

NYJ After going QB/WR in the first two rds, pretty
much had to take a running back here. Greene should be the
workhorse this year. The Jets have a great O line and a not

a great running team. Actually had a slight preference

thought about taking Antonio Gates with this pick. Instead,
I queued Finley ahead of both Ryan and Gates. As Finley has

And so long as he could stay healthy there is little doubt

picked as a breakout candidate in a number of places. A few

Looking for a 2nd RB or 2nd WR with this pick. None of
the RBs left looked that reliable, and there always seems to
be a few quality RBs that are available as free agents as

Last year, Williams had a great rookie season as WR. I

for IAC 4.03 Antonio Gates, TE, SD I had a 3 player queue set here. It was for Bowe, Mike Williams, and Gates. TD and Bonka chose well. That said, I can’t complain about grabbing my #1 ranked TE. There will likely be “quality” TEs available at the end of the 5th as well, but Gates really has the potential to score on avg 2PPG higher than any other TE. Also, drafting him here, gives me the flexibility of grabbing “value” picks at QB/WR/RB for the next couple rounds.

I don't know what is wrong with Moreno. There were much

did not show what he is capable to do. A few years ago every
RB playing for Denver reached 1000yds. I hope that Moreno is

which can't be said about all RBs that are still around or

4.09 Felix Jones, RB, Dal While waiting for youngroman to pick, I narrowed down my choice to Felix Jones or Santonio Holmes, and kind of hoped YR would settle the decision for me. He failed.
I have only one RB and one WR, so either position makes sense. I guess I decided on Jones mostly because I had disappointing results from Holmes three years ago in Pittsburgh. Fool me once…
Felix Jones is no sure thing, but he is the undisputed RB1 in Dallas. After Jason Garrett took over as head coach, he averaged 11.1 fantasy points/game, which would be just fine as my RB2. The biggest criticism seems to be his relative lack of success inside the 10 yard line. But no RB at this juncture comes without risks. If he stays healthy, I think I can plug him in every week. Early reports from training camp and preseason games are promising as well – both in performance and attitude.

Santonio Holmes. Holmes was the last WR I had in my WR1 tier

did last year after the suspension and the guy throwing the
ball and at the other WR spot have gotten better (or
upgraded).
Now that I have locked down the second-best receiving corps
in the league after Bonka (but I’ll take the RB matchup!),
I’m thinking TE or RB depending on who is there. I’d
probably take Clark if he’s still out there or start my RB2

Ind Clark was the last guy in my elite TE tier, while
the current RB pool is deeper than will likely go off the
board over the next couple of rounds. Same for QBs - while 3
teams still need one before I pick again, I think one of the
guys in this tier will be there when it gets back. Obviously
WR is a full spot for me but Collie is enough of a value on
my board that I nearly took him anyway. I didn’t because I
don’t think I could get full value for him given the
concussion history and I’ve got Clark only about a point per
game lower. Since I can’t start 4 WRs, that’s a good trade
off!
The injury to Manning and departure of Tom Moore is a
concern here. I looked at the new QB’s tendencies to pass to
TEs with his previous teams and I did not see anything too
alarming. I think Manning will be back fairly quickly and at
this point I don’t see Clark taking a big hit because of
this.
Now I look forward to watching the massive WR run (I think
at least 10 will go off the board before I pick again),
Willis kicking off IDP selections, and maybe 4 QBs and RBs
combined. My next pick will almost certainly be
Freeman/Stafford or an RB if they are both still there as

5.08 Jerod Mayo LB NEP Well now this is a shift. I was looking over the remaining WR2/3 lists focusing on their potential total fantasy points. They weren’t too great -- mostly 120/130’s. Heck I thought: “This is a points based league.” Find someone who will earn you some points! And so I looked at the LB corps and found Jerod Mayo who has been steadily great during his short career and apparently “flying all over the place on D this year” and as a result might see an increase in sacks as well as tackles. His point totals are estimated at 150+. Seemed like a no brainer. Now that’s not to say that a wide won’t go off and score 20 points in a coupla games, but I’ll take the steady LB points and find a wide somewhere who will on occasion (probably when he is on my bench that week) score 20 or more on any given Sunday. Besides I’ve already got the overall WR#1 on my team already…

I had 3 RBs in my 5.13 queue and 3 QBs in my 6.02 queue since I had hoped TD wasn't going to take another QB on the 5/6 turn with Brady but had a hunch shortbus and IAC would grab 2 QBs in front of me to try putting me in a hole (plus the ADP was about right, at least on Schaub). I'd prefer to not take a QB this early if it's not one of the top 8, but for whatever reason, people feel the need to go QB crazy at the start of the draft here in recent years, so my hand is forced. I wanted to avoid being the last person to take QBs again, when I ended up with Stafford and my QB2 in I think the 10th and 11th rounds. Here I am almost picking last again, and with Stafford...again. Not the safest pick, but if the guy can actually stay healthy, he can put up huge numbers in that offense. I managed to dominate scoring last year with multiple QB injuries, and hopefully I don't have to deal with much on the injury front this year.

although i am concerned by his concussion history and

this was a high-risk, high reward pick.

but I wanted to get a “talented, experienced” WR2. I had
Thomas last year and he did have some great games. However,
he has already been called out by both his coach and QB for
not hustling. OOPS. I also worry about the JAX QB situation.
He is their WR1 and has speed but not height for those GL
jump ups. He should see a ton of targets as JAX plays from
behind… He is more in the mold of DJax, but way less
talented. He needs to A) get free, B) grab it in space and
C) goooooooooooooooooo to goal to be successful. We shall
see if he can rise to the opportunity he has. I was actually
a bit surprised that he was still available. I now have two
WR and the rest of the availables are not so great. Not sure
where to go next.

6.08 Patrick Willis, LB, SF I was not comfortable with any of the RB/WR/TE left. I have a few players that I am interested in, but not that early. at least I hope that they make it a few more rounds. The result of this is that I am the 2nd manager to pick an IDP. for me there was not much to decide. every year when you think about a top LB you think about Patrick Willis. I think I had him in his rookie season, so I welcome him back to my team. Willis is consistently getting over 100 solo tackles a season. i expect him to do it again and score 9-10 pts/game, like he usually does.

Probably the #2 receiver on Jax, and a consistent target in the end zone, with 10 TD’s last year. He’s only missed two games in the last five years. His bye is not until week #9. Hopefully, I can just plug him in and let him ride.

for The Beezer 6.10 Joseph Addai, RB, Ind It seems like I am the last person to grab a QB just about every year in my RIFC league. This year is no exception. I THINK about drafting a QB, but I always try to wait "just 1 more round". I've grown used to it and this year especially I don't see that as a big handicap. I feel like I can take 2 QBs outside the top 14 plus the waiver wire and get good performance. We'll see if I can do it again. I would have grabbed Freeman or Stafford if they would have dropped, but that's not how it worked out.
I thought Collie might actually make it back to me. If he had, I would have picked him. Since that didn't happen, it's time to start the RB2 committee. I've got Fred Jackson rated higher than Addai, but I have more confidence Jackson will make it back to me.
Addai is a top-12 guy when he's healthy, but that's the rub, isn't it? So plan A is he stays healthy and gives me RB1 value. Plan B is he starts when he's healthy and Steady Freddy Jackson gives me RB2 value the rest of the time (assuming he makes it back). Let's not consider what plan C is.

for The Beezer 7.05 Fred Jackson, RB, BUF Mission accomplished. Freddy is a solid guy and the big questions are if Spiller is going to take away touches (possibly but probably not enough to kill the value) and if there’s going to be 9 in the box with the other 2 on Steve Johnson (probably and that will not be fun). Obviously I’ll grab some more guys later but I’m feeling OK about RB2 at this point.
The next order of business is IDPs. Ideally, I will lock down 2 of the top 6 DLs in rounds 8 and 9. They are at least a point per game better than everyone else at the position so that’s where the value is on my board. QBs can wait at this point since I don’t expect that the guys I am thinking about will be gone by round 10.

7.06 Santana Moss, WR, Was Not an exciting pick, but he is the undisputed WR1 for the ‘Skins, and regardless of who’s throwing him the rock, I’m hoping he gets his share of receptions and TDs. Approaching this pick, the only other WR I was mulling was Amendola, but I think his value at this stage of the draft depends somewhat on return yardage, and I couldn’t get comfortable that he’d be the primary returner for either punts or kickoffs. Didn’t matter, as Amendola was taken before I had to decide.
Another option was to snag a third RB – five teams have already done so. But Fred Jackson was the only one I was considering for that. Or I could have started on IDPs, and taken a top tier LB. But I decided to fill my final offensive starting slot. I actually had him on my radar two rounds ago, although that would have been too early. In round 7, I think there’s good value, though. Moss’ bye week also meshes fine with my other two WRs.

8.08 C.J. Spiller, RB/KR?, BUF Ok, it does not look like the year of the IDP. only a few picked one thus far with a lot of others starting to pile up some RB depth. The WR/TE pool is still very thin for this pick. I looked at some IDPs, but there are too many equally valued linebackers and I don't want to be the first one who picks a DB, the top DBs are too equal, so I have no problem getting the 5th best DB. And I am not in love with DL'ers. Don't ask me why, but it is definitely not their weight. It is probably that there is not much difference at this position and starting 2 DL starters do not change that for me. I think I talked enough about what I did not do. lets talk about why I picked C.J. Spiller. he has the chance of being the starter for Buffalo. In case he is not the starter he should be the backup to Fred Jackson who steals some carries away from him to keep him fresh. additionally it looks like he also might return some kicks. I hope that this is the case and that the new kickoff rule does not create too many touchbacks. Too bad he has the same bye week as LeSean McCoy, but he was too much value compared to other RBs that might still be available in round 9.

9.06 Chad Greenway, LB, Min Greenway should benefit from the revised IDP scoring formula this year. He only had one sack last year (and none in 2009), but he had 13.5 TFLs. bye-week holes if my other WRs. that was not the case for
other RB/WR available here, so I better take him now than

for Judy 9.08 Danny Woodhead RB NEP Although the Pats have a RBBC rotation, Woodie is good enough that he will see snaps in every game. He is like a little scat back, now you see him, now you don’t. I like his (small) size, good hands (1 FB) and quick feet. He averaged over 10 yds/reception last year. Pats don’t hesitate to use him inside the 20. I had him last year and he had some very good games. I also wanted him for sentimental reasons. My 17+ year old girl cat, Woodruff, AKA Woodie, died this week and so I can be reminded of her whenever Woodhead does a good thing on the field, which I hope will be often!

As a Patriots fan, I get to see a fair bit of Fish
games, and it’s amazing how hard working and quick he is
(very Wes Welker-like). Like Welker, he’s also entrenched in
the Dolphins game plan. He’s a surer bet for receptions by

as he doesn't have the same size. I think he’ll be a solid
flex-option for me.

for Bonka 9.13 Lance Moore, WR, NO I had Steve Smith, Moore, and McGahee in a short queue for this pick. As I expected, Smith went before me, only to Shortbus rather than IAC. Only a little bit bummed about that, because Moore is right there with him. The guy has always performed well for the Saints when Bush wasn't in the lineup. He figures to be worked in more in the passing game and hopefully continues to handle punt return duties, which really boosts his value. Having a WR4 who may outperform some people's WR2 is always nice.
Hold up, wait a minute. Now I see he hurt his groin the previous day. Glad I checked his recent news instead of relying on twitter for injury news since I didn't see anything. Ugh. While it shouldn't be major, this could cause some problems. Would have went RB/TE this turn if I had known.

McGahee could end up in a 50/50 split or even better with Moreno if the guy doesn't start doing something. He figures to be in for goal line carries if nothing else, and that's fine with me for my RB4. Lots of potential with the pick. It all rides on Moreno's play and McGahee's health.

As long as their O-Line improves over their preseason

Birk, McKinney, his O-line gave him very little time to get

Crap. My short list for this pick was Charles Johnson and Rashad Jennings. After Johnson was picked, I even felt confident enough that I pre-drafted my Jennings rationale, since youngroman already had 3 RBs.
10.09 Sam Bradford, QB, StL There really is no other RB that I’m interested in here. I have only two so far, but I’ll deal with that later. (maybe I’ll regret not taking Delone Carter here though.) Ditto for the available WRs.
With Michael Vick as my QB, I’m vulnerable if he gets injured – and I don’t want to rely on his backup if that should happen. I have Bradford ranked as the best and safest option among those available, and although it hurts a bit to nab someone who – if all goes well – might only start once for me. But when I look around at the other QB alternatives that are available, Bradford is my clear favorite.
I might have been able to wait until the next round, but Beezer picks twice in the meantime, and he still has no QB, so I’ll take him now.

10.10 Delone Carter, RB, IND August 27 has been a pretty lousy day. I broke a water pipe trying to change my house’s water filter and the power went out briefly. On top of all that, I was all set to take Bradford and already had written up my rationale when I noticed he was not there any more. :( I’m not thrilled enough with the guys that are a value right now to take one, so let’s just press on. There’s always trades and the waiver wire, right?
So it’s basically down to RB or LB for me. Carter serves as a handcuff as well as showing great potential as the power back that Indy has always needed. My other consideration was grabbing Hawthorne but I think he will slide.

10.14 Deion Branch, WR, NE I kinda put myself in a situation where I had to go WR here with the bye week situation, but I am not upset about it. Branch came alive last year when he got back to NE. I had him on my team, and he was productive. I expect the same out of him. He and Brady have a connection, so he will be looking for him. Solid #4 reciever. 11.01 Stephen Tulloch, LB, Det This was a spot where I had a tough choice as to who to take. I looked at S, but none were really taken, and I figured I should get someone decent later. RB, but no one blew me away. So I decided to get my second LB. I considered to take Kellen Winslow a few rounds back. other
available TE's have their issues. They are either not fully
healthy, getting older or still competing to be the #1 TE on
their team. Winslow seems to be healthier than ever, he was
held out of the first 2 preseason games to keep him fresh.
He has one of the better QBs in Josh Freeman and not much
competition for catches because the Tampa RBs are not known
for their passing game. he is also the most experienced
target on a team full of young receivers. note: soon after I picked him he left
the preseason game with a minor injury. I hope that it is

My biggest problem is that the good fantasy starter backups mostly had bye week 6 like my #1 Rivers. That ruled out 5 projected starters who had not yet been picked. Would have loved Kolb, but he was a 6 bye. So to even get a starter for Rivers’ bye, I had to pick here. Forget looking at who they play to see if he will play well, just grab him because he is the starter! Oh, wait! I just checked -- Week 6 the Jets play the Dolphins on Monday night -- a winnable game for sure and one I can even watch and cheer for the guy in real time! for youngroman 12.08 T.J. Ward, DB, CLE I finally had to take a DB. taking a DB means that you usually don't pick the best player at that position, you pick a player that gets involved often. This means you pick a player that exposes some weaknesses to opposing offense coordinators. this weakness may be that they are not good or inexperienced. In the case of TJ Ward this is inexperience. He is in his 2nd year and racked up nearly 100 solo tackles in his first NFL season. tackles is what you want to see from a DB. there is the occasional interception, but they can't be accurately planned in advance.

Mikell, DB, StL Wanted a high
quality SS here before the top tier was gone. I feel good w/
Mikell, even though he's moving to a new team. Nothing
flashy about this pick really, just a solid DB. I had also
considered Whitner. Will think about another LB or a DL on
the flipside of this turn.

12.14 Dustin Keller, TE, NYJ I was hoping to get Keller as a backup TE. Wasn't sure he would be around the next time the draft came to me. I picked him around the same area last year, and he performed well, but the TD's dropped off as the year went on. He is a favorite target of his QB, so I figure pretty solid #2 option. 13.01 Michael Griffin, S, Tenn I had looked at DB's earlier, but chose to wait, and missed out on a few guys. But a run had started so I figured I would follow suit. I had looked at Landry of Washington, but he had an injury that scared me away. Griffin should continue to rack up the tackles, and make plays.

for The Beezer 13.05 Cam Newton, QB,
Car I finally ran out of excuses not to take a QB.
Living in Charlotte’s TV market, I was inundated with draft
coverage when the Panthers got the top pick. I was very
disappointed when luck did not smile upon Carolina as it
would have been fun to be able to watch him develop and play
every week. I thought the Newton pick was a bad move from
the franchise solely to sell jerseys and tickets. Camp
reports have been really good, though.
While I’m not a fan of his game, I’m taking him anyway for
two primary reasons: he starts the season (and he will,
trust me) against Arizona and he has the strongest upside of
any remaining quarterback due to his ability to score on the
ground. I will look to back him up with McCoy on my next
pick and may even take a late-round flyer depending on who
is out there. To be blunt though, I think a trade or WW
pickup is going to get more starts for me this year than
Newton will.

13.06 Nate Burleson, WR, Det My WR4. I’ve had him in view for several rounds, and I think it’s time to shore up my receiving corps. WR2 for Detroit, and should get plenty of looks given the attention paid to Calvin Johnson. Caught two passes for 46 yards and a TD last night. May or may not get some PR activity, although that was really not a factor in this selection. Just a solid value pick in round 13.
The only other receiver on my short list was Jordy Nelson.

13.07 Jordy Nelson, WR, GB I don't know if he is the WR2, WR3 or WR4 for Green Bay. I only know that Aaron Rodgers likes to service all of his receivers. At least one of the other 2 mentioned receivers is getting older and should see fewer touches than him. He showed flashes of his talent last year. In a perfect world I need only 3 weeks out of him or any other receiver I have at the time.

for Judy 13.08 Justin Babin DE PHL I cannot believe that this is my first Iggle. Wow. Since we now have to start 2 DL, I figured it was time to grab at least one of the better ones since the drop off is pretty steep. He left Philly for Tenn and had a great year there. We hired his line coach and he followed him back here, which I think is a good sign. Although Philly does rotate guys in and out to keep them fresh, Babin does really well when he is in there. I am hoping for about 10 sacks and say 35 tackles from him. Not super great, but it’ll do.

I wasn't going to waste a high pick because realistically, if Manning misses half the season, Im probably going to have a bad year. There were only a few solid options left at this point. I considered McCoy and Mc Nabb and a few others at this spot. In the end, Hasselbeck seems to be fitting in well in tennessee and he should be a dependable option.

was going to take Hernandez here but decided to grab the old

worrying is probably Julio Jones, who figures to take a good
number of targets away from Gonzalez. Even with that, he

Den I was not comfortable with letting my backup QB
slide until my next set of picks. I feel there is a MAJOR
dropoff in QB talent once you get past the top 22 or so. If
I waited, I figured I'd end up with some scrub and with
Stafford's health being an issue, this wasn't acceptable. So
in comes Orton. Not the safest pick since I guess he could
be replaced by the backups in Denver, but they'd honestly be
stupid to do so. His upside might be capped a bit in the
John Fox offense, but he figures to be a really solid
quarterback, exactly someone you want as a backup.
I also had hoped to start a semi run on the remaining QBs
once people noticed they could get burned badly if they
didn't grab one. Four QBs went before my next pick.

Both have “break out” potential -- not sure if that label is good or bad. Had to grab Brown now though as his sidekick, my #12.07 pick Sanders, is doing the slow dance recovering from foot surgery. I seem to be playing catch up with my picks now instead of sticking with a plan. Brown has sleeper value as I think [undrafted] will be relegated to the bench. Too old and too slow. Also found out that Brown returns KO which is not as valuable as previously but still a threat. Sweet! 14.09 Demarco Murray, RB, Dal Murray finally appeared in a game last night, and rushed for 32 yards on 7 carries. It’s speculative whether he’ll be the RB2 or RB3 in Dallas (behind Felix Jones), although he seems to be projected as #2. With only two RBs in the fold, I have to get busy. Murray could be considered depth or a Jones handcuff.
I’m still light at RB, but there always seem to be RB options that develop in the regular season F/A pool, so I’m willing to continue to play with fire during the draft. Every team has weak spots - you have to pick your poison.

late in the draft, holt can't contact fugazi right away when

for Judy 16.07 Louis Delmas DB DET I like this pick even though the cheat sheets rank him low to middle. I waited a long time to select a DB because frankly I feel that the point differential between the top and middle is less than at almost any other position. So far, 15 DB have been picked, including some I have had in the past who have done well (Chung, Mikell, Bell, Weddle, Berry). Delmas in his three years in the league has averaged 60+ solo and 25+ assisted tackles. The guy is a tackle machine! Add in an assortment of INT, FF, FR and there you have it. PLUS, the way the DL in DET is pressuring the QB, (And how are YOU feeling today, Tom Brady?), he could be in line for additional INTS from fluttering balls tossed in haste. I have a coupla other DB sleepers in mind to fill out my roster -- I wonder if any will be plucked from my grasp!

next few are gone. all remaining RBs will only have value
when the top 2 on their team get injured, suspended or
fumble a lot. But that does not mean that a #3 RB needs to
be drafted. This is classic waiver wire fodder. to
strengthen my team and to give it one last body at RB I took
Bernard Scott. He looks good in preseason, which does not
mean much, but there is potential that he steals away some
carries from a declining Cedric Benson. It may also be
possible that Scott is involved in the return game, but this
might not be the case if he gets more involved on offense.
too bad his bye-week is not perfect as I already have 2 RBs

16.09 Jermaine Gresham, TE. Cin I was hoping to get Aaron Hernandez here. Maybe I should have taken him last round, and picked up a DB now. Regardless, Gresham could work out OK, as a TE2 and possibly a flex receiver.
He wasn’t particularly productive last year. Then again, he had to overcome two prima-donna WRs who needed the Cincy QB to “throw me the damn ball”. This year, those two guys have moved on, the Bengal QB may be a rookie, and Gresham may get a lot more action, either by design or by desperation. One pundit described him thusly: “Gresham is a fantasy monster coming into his own.” We’ll see how scary that monster turns out to be.

17.06 Cameron Wake, LB, Mia A bit of a flier, in spite of being a starter for the AFC Pro Bowl last year. Our IDP scoring system now awards points for TFL and QB hits. Wake doesn’t get enough tackles to rank highly in traditional IDP systems, but he led the league in 2010 in both TFLs (25.5) and QBH (28). That made him a top 10 LB in this scoring system in 2010. He was also remarkably consistent week-to-week, with only 3 games of less than 5 pts, and one of those was when he left early with a hip injury
Can he repeat those numbers? I dunno. But in round 17, it’s worth a gamble.

as the best wide at the Senior Bowl. He is small, but fast
and is also expected to return kicks which is potentially a
wasted skill this year… He could do well or he could play
like a rookie. If Calvin draws the double coverage, he could

18.09 Kyle Williams, DT, Buf Yes, I know my RBs lack any meaningful depth. Too late to fix that now. As long as Forte and Felix Jones stay healthy for week #1, I’ll roll with it.
This is my last IDP starter. After missing out on a second “elite DL” (if that’s not an oxymoron), I decided to wait until now. My short list was Kyle Williams and James Hall. Although there would be a certain karmic fit by having a Hall on the roster, I ranked Williams slightly higher due to a 6-year youth advantage and a better bye fit.
Williams is only the 2nd DT drafted. He averaged almost 7 pts/game last year, and although he gets some benefit from the new stats (12 TFL, 12 QBH), he was one of the higher rated remaining DLs using “traditional” IDP stats as well.

for IAC 19.12 Carlos Dunlap, DE, CIN I needed another starting DL, and I’m really relying on the “experts” on this one. I haven’t any recollection of having seen him play, but he really seemed to come on strong for the Bengals the 2nd half of last year. He could end up being a bye week sacrifice, as both he and Tuck share week 7. I’m undecided as of right now whether or not I think it’s worth holding a 3rd DL.

for IAC 20.03 Thomas Davis, LB, CAR I’m unsure as to whether he’ll be playing SLB or WLB, but as long as he’s healthy he should be on the field most of the time, and capable of putting up big numbers. He’s now my 3rd LB, so it figures that I take a higher risk on this one.

pick a DL, a Kicker and 3 offensive scrubs that are

same except that its 2 DL and only 2 offensive scrubs.
looking through all DLers, not only those that are still
available, there is not much difference. the exception may
be the first few, but I think they are overpaid. the result
of this is that I can wait until the last few rounds to draw
some lineman out of the hat. Haloti Ngata is a cornerstone
of the Ravens defense line. he gets above average tackles at
his position with a few sacks, but more important with
double digits tackles for loss. I have the feeling that he

Plus we both jumped in early on top IDP’s. I’ve played often with YR and he knows my tendencies, so I was PRAYING that he would leave Henery for me. I also knew that if I did not grab him this round, that TD, for sure, would take him in one of his two picks at the turnaround (Right, TD?). The Iggles score a lot but also stall a lot in the red zone or close to it, so a PK generally does well there. I think it is funny that we have a new KO named Henery and a new PK named Henry. Both rookies, both top at their position coming outta college. Weird.

I don't think that they will lose that much, but 3-13 doesn't sound good either. playing from behind means that the passing game will get more focus. I have no idea about the skill set of Andy Dalton who looks to be the starter, but he needs to throw the ball for this team to win it. the running game won't be the solution because it will be stopped sooner than later. that leaves them with the passing game. their other receivers are: AJ Green, J Gresham and #undrafted#. for Letter_J 23.11 Josh Wilson, DB, WSH If [undrafted WR] gets cut in camp, Wilson could absolutely blow up the way he did (what was it, two years ago now?), being both the kick/punt returner and starting CB. Regardless, he starts opposite a former pro-bowler and should see lots of passes coming his way.

for IAC 23.12 Mason Crosby, K, GB He plays for a high scoring offense. No other reason than that. I actually did take the time to bother and check if Bonka needed a kicker or not. I figured I’d try to one up him ONE LAST TIME! ;)

for Bonka 23.13 Billy Cundiff, K, BAL I was probably going to take Crosby here, but SURPRISE, IAC takes him as I'm deciding. So I went with Cundiff. Probably should have just not drafted a kicker.

for TD 23.14 Lamarr Houston, DE, Oak Houston had a good rookie season with 5 sacks. His numbers should to improve in his 2nd season.
24.01 Michael Huff, DB, Oak Huff was one of the top players on 2005 Texas national championship team and was selected 7th overall by the Raiders in the 2006 draft. He finally had a breakout season last year and was rewarded with a big new contract. Hopefully the Raiders did not make a mistake and he continues to perform at a high level this season.

for Bonka 24.02 Patrick Peterson, CB, ARI I could have taken anyone I wanted with this pick but didn't care that much about the remaining RB/WR/LBs so just decided to go with Peterson. Rookie CBs usually get thrown at a lot and Peterson is a huge talent. He won't be doing returns as far as I know, but he could still be solid on just his defensive play alone. Basically a decent upside pick that will quickly go the way of being cut early unless he flashes something.

for IAC 24.03 Josh Cribbs, WR/KR/PR/WildCatQB/Double Reverse Specialist/Special Teams Gunner, CLE
Why not?! He scored 12PPG two years ago in our format, and by all indications, he’s been having a good preseason. He’s even saying he doesn’t care where the ball falls on kickoffs, he’ll be returning the out of the endzone at any depth.

for Letter_J 24.04 Dan Carpenter, PK, MIA Meh! We have to start a kicker...so, I draft a guy with a big leg on a team with a coach that is not adverse to taking the points. IIRC, it seemed like Carpenter put up solid numbers weekly last year for EE.

for Tree 24.05 Joe Haden, DB, Cle
i needed anther DB. Joe Haden is a DB. Odd to say a DB
is a sleeper, but i think Haden is. All 6 of his
interceptions came in the last 11 games of the season. he's
got great speed, and a knack for the ball and ball carrier.
honestly, i really like this pick.

for russeldl 24.06 David Buehler, K, DAL Two things I like about Buehler. One, he's an NFL kicker and we're required to have an NFL kicker on our roster. I don't care which one it is. Second, it gives me the opportunity to say "Buehler...Buehler" in the Ben Stein monotone which will annoy the crap out of my fiance. I consider that a win.

for Judy 24.07 Jabaal Sheard DL CLE Having to start two DL really made me pick up a third DL here. Unfortunately, my first two share the same bye week, a mistake I made… just was not paying attention. Will need to find another one to fill in for week 7, but there are usually several around although 5 is the first bye week so everyone’s extras will not have been dumped yet. Oh well. That said Jabaal Sheard has good potential as I again go with youth, with him expecting to start at DE right away. Another rookie!!! He was the Big East Def Player of the Year, but the Big East is a crappy conference so who knows what that really means. He is termed a “relentless and explosive” pass rusher with 20 career sacks at Pitt, nine his senior year. That works for me. Cleveland will be spending a lot of time on D so he should certainly get his chances. We shall see. If nothing else, he is a bye week fill in.

for youngroman 24.08 Rob Bironas, PK, TEN I think this is the first time in years that I actually draft a kicker. Don't ask me why. Bironas is accurate and one of the better kickers. he has a strong leg and converts lon FG with great percentages, even when they are made from 50+. The Titans offense may be better too this year. I don't know if this is good (more PATs) or bad (less FGs).

24.09 Chester Taylor, RB, Chi I guess he’s still on the Bears, although apparently the front office wants to release him while the coaching staff wants to retain him. If he stays, he’s a potential backup to Forte. If he is released, he’s a potential backup for some other team. Either way, he probably won’t stay on my roster for long.

for ywk 24.12 James Hall, DL, StL Despite being my last pick in this draft, Hall may have the chance to start on my team immediately (another evidence showing my weakness of picking the defense?). Though coming off the best season of his career, Hall is believed to still have some gas left in his tank.

for Swinganamiss 24.13 Jason Avant, WR PHI I'm an Eagles fan. One of many in here it seems! I would like to think Jackson and Maclin can stay healthy this season, however there's a reasonable chance that one goes out for a part of the season. Maclin may not be ready to produce at his normal levels early in the season. In any case, Avant could have some value for me, if I even hang onto him.

for Electroman 24.14 Dawan Landry, DB, Jax Last guy taken in the draft. As a stated earlier, it would be wise for me to take another DB because of the Wilson injury. I am happy to take Landry. He racks up tackles. He was a pretty solid contributer last year. Another thing I just noticed is that both of my other DB's have the same bye week. So we will see about that.
