Subject: RIFC 2012: Draft Rationales

  Posted by: Guru - [330592710] Sun, Aug 26, 2012, 23:03

This thread will be for managers in the 2012 RotoGuru Invitational Football Challenge to provide the rationale for each pick.

Here are the ground rules:
1. Only managers in this league should post here. If you want to provide feedback (either from other league managers, or from those not in the league), put it in the discussion thread. (Non-conforming discussion in this thread will be deleted.)

2. Please keep the pick rationales in the same order as the draft. We'll attempt to keep this thread 2 rounds behind the actual draft. With the lag, most comments should not have an impact on the draft in progress. However, if there are aspects of your pick that you feel need to be kept under wraps, feel free to protect that information. In particular, please avoid mentioning the names of any players who are still undrafted at that time of the post.

If possible, please post your (2 round lagged) comments at the time you make each pick. If you are not ready to post at that time, then create a "placeholder" so that the next person is able to go ahead in sequence. When your post is ready, simply post it in the draft discussion thread and a moderator can copy it over.

If your rationale is due and intervening placeholders have not been inserted, please insert them before posting your rationale. Simply post in this format:

for Guru
1.14 Rob Gronkowski, TE, NE

3. Once the draft is over, each manager will also be encouraged to provide a general draft recap, at which time you can discuss your overall strategy, mention any undisclosed factors, comment on what worked out well and what didn't, etc. A separate thread will be set up for that.

The general format should be:
1.01 Ray Rice, RB, Bal
Several sentences of rationale.

As part of your first round rationale, please comment on your selection of draft sequence.

Slot Selection 1

I did not expect to get my pick of top slots, so I was happy to take the #1 pick. I thought about taking the 2nd pick, but since I wanted Rice or Foster, I wanted to make sure if one got hurt I could get the other.

1.01 Ray Rice, RB, BAL

Originally I took the 1.01 pick thinking I'd take Foster. But I talked myself in to Rice. Foster has suffered more injuries in the past and is going to be sharing the load. Rice is the guy in Baltimore and their offense may even be improved a bit this year. Elite RBs are hard to come by.

I was the 1st to take an early position, believing a 1st rd RB was a must. Seems my thoughts were right on, but I just couldn't resist rodgers.

4th draft position
I was last to choose. The way things shook out, I was almost certain that I was taking Aaron Rodgers with my first pick. gurudan selected the 3rd slot early, so I figured he wanted one of the top 3 RBs. I knew Bonka wanted one, and figured jzapps was the only one who might "flip the script". Well I was back and forth about how I felt about getting Rodgers this early, so I wasn't really happy with the slot. Contemplated trying to trade out of it, but obviously noone wanted this slot.

1.04 LeSean McCoy, PHI, RB
Much to my surprise, gurudan took Rodgers, and left McCoy for me. I'm pretty happy about this turn of events, as I really like to get a stud RB early on (plus I am a big Eagles fan, so that's a bonus). Anything close to the 20 TDs and 1600 yards he had last year will make this pick well worth it. Now I have some freedom to pick a QB when it's "the right time", instead of being pigeon-holed into it.

Pick 5: My choices were 4 and 5. These were the two spots lowest on my list for this year. I decided on 5 to get an earlier pick in rounds 2 and 3. I figured there was NO WAY that one of the top 3 RBs would fall to the 4 slot. That’s a “what-if” I will be pondering all year and once again, this proves that I don’t know anything!

Last year the #5 slot led to one of my favorite teams ever and I am hopeful I can do it again.

1.05 Calvin Johnson, WR, Det
I looked at the top guy on my board at each offensive position here – Brady, McFadden, Megatron, and Graham. To be honest, I had come around to DMC and thought I had changed my draft list so I could think about it more when my pick came up. Oops again! I made some offers to trade down as DMC slid a bit but no dice.

Having said that, I’m still pretty pleased with this pick. He is the consensus #1 WR and it’s not close. Plus there’s that whole “you can’t win a draft in round 1, but you can lose it” thing. I’ve had a lot of success with getting QBs and RBs late, but my later WR picks don’t often seem to pan out. As long as I can grab a top-10 RB in round 2, I feel good.

1.06 Tom Brady, QB, NE
I chose the 6th pick because I felt like there were 6 players without questions marks. Those six were foster, rice, mccoy, rodgers, brady, and brees. I felt like any one of those guys could be plugged in and, barring a surprise injury, would produce solid numbers every week. By taking the 6th slot I knew I would get one and I didn't care which one it was.

7th: Basically no thought or research, which doesn't make me feel better. I was caught off-guard and just took a spot in the middle. This league is always competitive and picking anywhere perks and challenges. I've picked in most locations in these leagues, but with the change in RBs I don't feel that the first few picks are nearly as valuable as they once were.

1.07 Chris Johnson, RB, Ten
In the back of my mind Rodgers or Brady were possibilities, Brees scared me because of all of the issues going on in NO. So, I decided to go RB after Megatron was gone. I haven't taken a RB in the first round in a RIFC league in years, so decided to try a new strategy. If the 09 version of CJ comes back, this is a great pick. If I get the 11 version, I probably reached.

draft pick #8: I wanted one to get one of the top 3 QBs with this pick and I felt this was the lowest I could go. The NFL is a QB driven league. Last year there was a big drop off in total fantasy points after the top 5 QBs. I also didn't want to draft too early because I think drafting early is not advantageous because of 3rd round reversal.

1.08 Drew Brees, QB, NO
My top 3 QBs are Brady, Rodgers, and Brees in that order. My next two are Newton and Stafford and I didn't think any of the top 5 would be available with my next pick. I rated Newton and Stafford a little lower than the top three because they haven't proved they can put up big numbers in multiple seasons. I am little concerned about Brees not having Peyton around this season. I don't think the offense will be changed much and Brees will put up big numbers again.

Draft pick #9-My choices were between 4, 5 and 9. I chose #9 because it gave me earlier picks in rounds 2-4.

1.09-Darren McFadden, RB, Oak
My targets for the 1st round were Calvin Johnson and Aaron Rogers, but of course there was no chance that either one would reach me at 1.09. After that the goal was to get the best RB available, which I thought was Darren McFadden.

Pick 10: I have always believed in the 3rd round reversal drafts it is best to be as close the the end of the draft as possible. 10th was the lastest pick available and I took it.

1.10 Matthew Stafford, QB, Det
I really did not want to go QB here. I had some hopes of Run DMC falling to me and he made it all the way to the pick before me. None of the Running backs really jumped out at me so I took what i felt was the best available player on the board. Especially since the combo of Stafford to Calvin cost me 2 championships last season.

draft pick #11: like most of us the intention was to pick as late as possible to get the advantage of the Banzai. I had the choice number 2 and virtually every position to choose from. I thought a bit about taking pick #1 and run away with Arian Foster but that would be too much value to throw away in round 3. and I already have him in G24 and an injury would kill me in 2 leagues this year. This won't happen. So I looked at the potential round 1 players. With drafting a RB in mind I thought that #11 would be ok because some QBs and WRs will go early this year.

1.11 Matt Forte, RB, Chi
I haven't filled my queue until pick 9 was due. at this time I entered McFadden and Forte as the RBs to my draft queue. McFadden went immediately afterwards. Wiggs took Stafford at #10 so Forte joined my team. he was great last season until he went down in week 13. yes he has competition for scores in #undrafted# but that was also the case last year. what I really like in Forte is that he is also a threat in the passing game. Hopefully he makes up the lost TDs on the ground with TDs through the air. there is hope that he gets 300 carries with an average of 4.5 yards which would be 1350 yards on the ground. add 60 receptions for 600 yards and he could have a chance for 2000 total yards. combine that with 8 TDs and you have a player that should go earlier than 1.11

Pick#12
I considered taking the 3rd or 4th draft slot so I could draft A Rodgers, but ended up going with #12 (13 & 14 were taken) so I could take advantage of the rd 3 banzai position and also figured I could get a better QB/RB combo from this spot.

1.12 Newton, Cam CAR QB
The rb's available here seemed like a stretch. There were 5 or 6 rb's I felt were about equal so at least one would be available on my 2.03 pick. I don't think Newton would have made the turn so it was an obvious pick. He's a freak and has potential for a monster season. His passing numbers have room for improvement and I think he'll keep racking up the rushing yds and td's. I just hope he doesn't get hurt doing it. He's a big dude though so I'm not overly worried about it. There's always the chance of a sophomore slump but what are you going to do? No pick is a sure thing. I'll take my chances.

Pick#13.
I chose this spot because I wanted to snag one of the top TE near the bottom of the first round (unless an obvious talent slipped) and a solid RB or top tier WR on the turn. More to be posted on this later...

1.13 Jimmy Graham, NOS, TE
The plan worked out as Graham was available with my first pick. I always seem to be weak at TE in this format so am hoping I can just plug him in all year and not have to worry about this position.

Pick 14 – nothing specific in mind, other than trying to take advantage of the Banzai bump in round 3.

1.14 Rob Gronkowski,TE, NE
2.01 Darren Sproles, RB NO

Was tentatively hoping to nab a top QB here, either Cam or Stafford. But they went 10 and 12. My other pick was going to be either Sproles, Gronk, or Murray. So with the QBs gone, I took Gronk as the receiver, and then had to decide between Murray and Sproles. Given that our league counts punt and KR yardage, I had Sproles projected for more points, and even though he’s older (29), he’s been very durable, playing in all 16 games in each of his past four seasons. Of course, he did tweak his knee in the first preseason game and hasn’t played since, but the injury appears to be minor, and this ensures he’ll be fresh for week #1.

2.02 Larry Fitzgerald, ARI, WR
So I am sitting here on vacation in Florida watching hurricane reports with my Mom and it is time for me to draft. Fitz is my top rated player by a nosehair over Jones, but I am debating taking a RB and looking at Peterson and Murray. It is still very early in the draft so a lot of RB talent available and 7 RB have already been drafted. I am chewing it over when my Mom (who doesn't really follow football) asks me what I am doing. I tell her who I am thinking about drafting and she says to draft Fitzgerald. This ones for you, Mom.

2.03 Adrian Peterson, MIN, RB

After taking Cam Newton in rd 1 this had to be a rb pick. 10 of the 14 players drafted in rd 2 were rb's, and I would have been ok with any of them. No special reason for taking Peterson, except obviously I think he will return from his knee injury ok.

2.04 Murray, DeMarco DAL RB
Initially I thought about taking a QB or WR here, but all the top options went already, so RB was the better choice here. my queue also contained Jamaal Charles, but I am more happy that Murray will join my team this season.

Much like Forte he also went down early last season (week 14). he took over lead-back duties a few games into the season, missed 3 games at the end of the season and still managed 895 yards. based on this numbers he should get over 1500 rushing yards over a full season. I don't even want to imagine what he may be able to do when he gets 20 rushes a game with a 5.5yd average.

I took Matthews here with my fingers crossed that he is back no later then week 2. If he is out an extended period of time my team is in trouble, but if he comes back this is great value. I was really hoping for AP or Murray to slip through but when they didnt i figured it was time to make a move

2.06 Jones, Julio ATL WR
Until last season I had always gone RB- RB in rounds 1 and 2, but the way the NFL has changed, I decided to draft at least one WR in the 1st two rounds and two WRs in the 1st four. I used this strategy again this year. Jamaal Charles had a lower ADP, but Julio Jones was the best remaining WR.

2.07 Lynch, Marshawn SEA RB
After taking a QB with my 1st pick, I was looking for a RB, WR, or TE with this pick. There is a big drop off after the top two TE's that were already picked, so I eliminated TE. Looking at the WRs, there were about 10 available that I rated around the same value, so I figured I could pick up one of these next round. I considered MJD but was concerned that he could be injury prone with a reduced role after he reports. I also considered Jammaal Charles but I was concerned about him coming back from the ACL injury. Lynch had the 6th most fantasy points among RBs last season. I remember watching him against my Eagles last season and he was a beast. He is 26 years old and reportedly in great shape.

2.08 Welker, Wes NEP WR

I wasn't paying attention and apparently something errored when I was importing some draft rankings. I blame my kids for distracting me. Don't they no this is important?

That being said, this is a reach, but if Brady and Welker continue to hook up like they have in the past and the Pats have another receiver and RB to make D's not concentrate on Welker, this could be a ok pick at the end of the year. At this point, I can't say that I'm off to a rousing success looking at my rationales.

2.09 Maurice Jones- Drew, RB, Jac
Last year I took Chris Johnson in the first round and it failed to pay off. So you would think I would be able to refrain from taking another holdout RB early. And you would be wrong. I couldn't pass on the upside of a guy I had ranked no lower than about 8 at the end of the second round. And rumors seem to have it that he'll be back with the Jags soon. It may seem like he wants the money, but he may just be one of those vets who doesn't want to go to camp.

2.10 Jamaal Charles, RB, KC
Really was wanting Lynch or MJD, so naturally they went right before my pick. REALLY struggled with this pick. RB is definitely the pick as the WR pool is deep, TEs are pretty even, and I just don’t believe taking a QB at this point makes sense. Looked mainly at Charles, SJax, and Richardson. Richardson is a rookie, currently hurting, and will likely be eased into the lineup if he even plays week 1. SJax is awesome yet he is getting older and the O-Line and receivers are still lousy, so it's hard to see him getting enough red zone opportunities to bust out. Decided Charles had the best combination of upside and health right now, as crazy as that sounds for someone who had an ACL tear last season.

There is no question that Charles has top-5 ability, it’s just a question of his health and opportunity. Everything I’ve seen in the preseason shows the health question appears to be in order. As for opportunity, even 250 touches should be enough to produce solid RB1 value. It’s definitely not a risk-free pick, but there are no low-risk picks here.

There are a bunch of similarly-projected WRs here, but I didn’t want to wait until next round to get one of the top ones. The short list also included Andre Johnson, Brandon Marshall, Greg Jennings, and Victor Cruz. Green was more or less a coin flip, helped by the fact that he’s also the youngest of the group.

Just getting to the end of the second round and I feel like I missed the memo. 5 QB's in the first round and 15 RBs taken while only 3 WR have been taken - one more RB and two WR taken after I typed this up. While I don't think some of the RB taken match the WR talent available, I hate missing runs and I realize the longer I wait to take starting RB the larger the risk. I do want a RB, but too much WR talent left at top for me to pass up. If Johnson can stay healthy, he is great value in the 3rd round.

The RB's left at this point were pretty unreliable in my opinion, and there were some great WR's still on the board. Would have loved to have another RB but they were just too risky with players like Jennings, Cruz, Nicks, Marshall, etc. on the board. Took Jennings because he has more track record than Cruz, more durable than Nicks, and less insane than Marshall. Didn't really give Harvin any thought.

3.04 Victor Cruz, WR, NYG
after taking RB-RB in the first 2 rounds it was time to pick a QB or WR. I don't like TE's this early. They seem to get involved more every year but you don't know which team will really feature their TE this year. You don't even know if the Patriots will continue to use Gronkowski and Hernandez like they did last year.

I did not like the available QB's, at least not that early. of the remaining ones only Vick and Eli were considered. I don't know if one of them will be available next round, so I'll probably have to pick one a few rounds later than planned.

so it was a WR. the short list I researched included
- Victor Cruz: was great last season. has only 1 great season. Eli likes to pass a lot and may throw even more this season. Cruz is his favorite target and could benefit from that
- Roddy White: I don't like Matt Ryan
- Andre Johnson: Is #undraftedQB# still any good? they may again rely heavily on Fosters running game
- Percy Harvin: you never know which player will show up. His QB1a and QB1b are even greater question marks than Ryan and AndreJohnson's QB
- Greg Jennings: exceptional QB, good receiver, but unfortunately this can be said about some others on the same team. too many competition
- AJ Green: as a G24 owner of his QB I have to believe in him. If I would be no owner he would be just a below average option. and I don't like such a guy throw to my #1 receiver.

I considered taking my first WR with this pick, but there were still about 5 available that I liked about the same, and thought at least one would be available next pick. Decided on picking a 2nd RB because there were only 2 left (Martin and Gore) before what I considered a big drop off. Martin appears to have won the starting job over Blount. He is a good pass catcher. I expect the Bucs to be much better this season with their new coach and to run the ball more. I liked Martin better than Gore because I feel Gore's role will be reduced some this season, and Gore is more susceptible to injury.

There seemed to me to be a tier of players closing out around this time. Mostly RBs and WRs who were consistent solid contributors but not quite studs. I considered a couple of WRs and RBs here and went with Gore. I leaned RB over WR because 1) there is the chance MJD holds out and Gore has to be my RB1 and 2) WR seems pretty deep this year.

I wasn't really thinking about Vick for this pick until I got up this morning and there were 4 picks before mine, and he was still there, and 2 of the 4 already had QBs. So I threw him in the queue w/ Harvin and Nicks and Wallace. Was thinking Harvin (definitely) and Nicks (marginally) would have been preferable, but both went in those 4 picks before mine.

Vick was 6th in QB ppg last year as the 1st QB off the board in most leagues, and some thought he should be #1 overall. This year he comes at a discount and of course with risk. I am hoping he can stay relatively healthy for the majority of the season. I'll need a decent backup, but I can live with that for the upside he can provide. Now I'm really vested in the Eagles offense this year!

3.14 Brandon Marshall, WR, Chi
This pick is going to dictate how the rest of my draft goes, for better or worse. I had to strongly consider a QB here even though I pick twice in 12 picks. If at least one QB doesn't go before my next pick I'll be surprised. Hopefully the QB I want is still there, but I highly doubt it. I should still be able to grab a good QB and decided to risk losing my top QB to grab my top WR left, who I feel is in a tier above the remaining WRs.

4.01 Jordy Nelson, WR, GB

Last year, Nelson ranked #3 in our scoring format (behind only Calvin Johnson and Wes Welker). That ranking was aided by 15 TDs, which probably won’t repeat. But with Aaron Rodgers heaving long passes his way, he seems like one of the most dependable big play options on the board. And with 22 picks to go before my next turn, I’m expecting a lot of activity among WRs.

So far, I have a receiving trio of AJ Green, Nelson, and Gronkowski. I’m pretty happy with that potential.

4.02 Reggie Bush, MIA, RB
I wrote up my rationale for why I am drafting Matt Ryan in this slot last night before going to bed. Matt Ryan was available, but instead I chose Bush. I don't draft again until 5.12 and that's a long time to wait before having my first RB. Bush said he is going to lead the league in rushing this year and...um...lol...I hope he can stay healthy and provide me points weekly.

4.03 Dez Bryant, WR, Dal
Bonka took B Marshall so I took the next craziest WR I could think of. Couldn't pull the trigger on Wallace due to contract issues (also the fact that his numbers dropped off drastically after A. Brown started getting more snaps). Also considered A Brown, S Smith, and a host of others. Just came down to the belief that Dez is better than all of them and has the most upside. Jerry Jones putting him under super surveillance probation didn't hurt either. Was too early for any of the junk RB's that were left.

4.04 Eli Manning, QB, NYG
I already praised Eli in my rationale for Victor Cruz. It is probably not wise to take 2 players that depend on each other in the first 4 rounds, but that is what I just did.

nothing more to say other than Manning may throw for over 5000 yards this season. his interceptions may go up a bit, but I hope that the TDs will go up too.

Staying with my plan of 2 WRs and 2 RBs in the 1st four rounds I drafted Jackson. He is a risk because is production is dependent upon Michael Vick’s health. As a NYG fan, I would have preferred not to have an Eagle on my roster, but priorities are priorities.

I really needed to get a WR with this pick as I was the only team without one. I was hoping that DeSean Jackson would be available, but he was picked with 4.06. I also considered Brandon Lloyd and Antonio Brown. Bowe had another 1100 yd receiving season last year, but his TD numbers dropped from 15 to 5. I think his TD numbers will increase this season with Cassell back at QB for KC.

4.08 Matt Ryan, QB, Atl
The last several years I have taken a QB or WR at the end of the first round as the value great. With the explosion of QB stats, Rodgers went #3 overall and Brady was taken right before my pick. I have doubts about Brees this year with the NO situation so decided to wait. Coming into this pick I had Ryan as far and away the best available quarterback left. He has 2 WR who are projected into the top 15 and a decent TE, with a new offensive coordinator I'm hoping for a break out year.

4.09 Mike Wallace, WR, Pit
I am all about the holdouts this year! I actually think OC Todd Haley will find ways to get the ball to Wallace this year and he'll look more like the Wallace from early last season. At the very least, he'll be paying for a paycheck. Im also not worried about the missed time in camp because Big Ben say's Wallace has had a playbook since may.

4.10 Brandon Lloyd, WR, NE
I was really hoping Matt Ryan would fall to here, but that was too much to ask. Not a big fan of the RBs at this range and I thought either Hernandez or V. Davis would drop to my next pick, so I decided to wrap up my WR starters. Lloyd is 2 years removed from being the #1 receiver and now he has a good QB throwing him the ball. What’s not to love?

Yeah, there are a ton of guys worth throwing to in NE, so that's a concern. But at WR3, he doesn't have to carry the load every week. I'm hoping for some 60 point weeks out of this receiving crew.

4.11 Vincent Jackson, WR, TB
There were at least half a dozen WRs I was looking at with this pick (at least half a round before my turn came up). Liked Colston, Wallace, and Bowe in that order. Sadly all gone, so it came down to Antonio Brown and VJ. Was tempted by Brown, but I don't think he returns kicks again this year, and Wallace will be back soon. VJ will be the number one on a team w/ a less than stellar QB. However, I will take that risk. Just like my last pick, Jackson was at least two rounds earlier than this in last years draft. So he has potential to boom (or continue to decline, I suppose).

4.14 Phillip Rivers, QB, SD

I really wanted to grab Matt Ryan here but he was snatched up earlier in the round. Now I question my decision to grab Marshall, but I guess I'm alright with it. Maybe the hype on Ryan is just too much. I'm hoping Rivers can put up good numbers this year after losing VJax and not really having much to throw to outside of Gates and Floyd. I considered grabbing a WR here since there was at least 1 guy that should have been gone already, but not picking until 2 rounds later, I didn't want to risk being stuck with the QBs that would likely be remaining.

5.01 Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, NYG

This might be a little early for a DE, but not by much if so. The production he and Allen provide over the rest of the the DEs should be a lot. It's always nice to have studs at positions and hopefully be able to plug them in the entire year and reap those PPG benefits. If JPP was gone I would have went with Allen here. Both are really close, I just decided to go JPP since the Giants should have a better overall pass rush and he's 7 years younger. I also somewhat considered taking both Allen and JPP at this turn but that seemed a bit too risky for my other positions, like QB. I knew I needed to grab one of them here if possible for the same reason as I grabbed a QB. No way JPP or Allen would be there at my next pick. Have to reach a little on the turns like this.

I was wondering how early the top two DEs would go this year. I remember being caught offgaurd by the early DEs last year. Before I realized they were going to go, the entire tier went at once. This time I noticed that the Tier 1 projections shrank from 6 to 2 this year. So, I had my eye on this "opportunity". Allen has been a beast for several years, so hopefully he can put up another dominating season. Once Bonka took JPP in this round, Allen was the only guy I put in my queue.

5.05 Aaron Hernandez, TE, NE
I’m not a big fan of taking multiple receivers from the same team, but I’ll make an exception for Hernandez. He has elite skills and has shown he can produce even when there are plenty of other options for Brady. I’m hopeful that having him and Lloyd will even out my production. It will likely just result in me throwing heavier things at the TV when Gronk or Welker scores.

5.06 Steve Smith, WR, CAR
Having picked the questionable Mike Wallace the round before, Iwanted a WR who was dependable. I am assuming there will be some drop off for smith. But I've thought that for a few years now and he keeps producing. I'm looking more from consistency and less fo upside with this pick.

5.08 Vernon Davis, TE, SF
I had Davis near the top of the 2nd tier of TEs. After Hernandez went with pick 5.05, I was afraid there would be a run on TEs. Davis is very talented, came on strong at the end of last season, and had a great game against the Giants in the playoffs. I expect SF to have a less conservative offense this season with Davis getting more chances to make big plays.

5.09 Peyton Manning, QB, DEN
On vacation in Virginia and set a long queue with Peyton Manning as the last pick. I did not expect to get him nor was I certain that I wanted a QB this early in the draft. Be that as it may, I have him and hope that once he loses the rust he will regain a semblance of his form from 2010. I liked Manning better than Romo because Romo has disappointed me many times in the past and better than Griffin, III because I think that Griffin, III will perform like a rookie QB, not like Cam Newton who was an anomaly.

I couldn't talk myself into another WR. Is it me or are most of the WRs at this point of equal value because of the many issues at QB?

as in previous years I avoid this by looking at the other side of the ball. the defense. I think for a few years now Patrick Willis was the 1st defense player taken. not this year. was surprised that 2 lineman (Pierre-Paul and Allen) went earlier this round. I figured that LB's will follow soon and took the best of them. there is no need to explain the pick of Willis any further. he is a stud!

I really wanted a QB and am satisfied to get Romo here. I think he is a 300 point QB in this format, which puts him somewhere in that 6-10 range for our league. I am hoping he is closer to 6th. I set up a lengthy QB queue quite awhile ago, as I was going to be out for about 5 hours. RG3 was the only remaining QB on the list – and perhaps better belonged with the next tier of QBs. A high upside, high risk pick, to be sure. Here’s hoping he’s more like Cam Newton than Ryan Leaf.

6.01 C.J. Spiller, RB, Buf
I also set up a RB queue with about 6 names. The next name after Spiller was Donald Brown. That was a tough choice. Brown is a UConn alum (and I have season tickets for UConn football), so that would have been the sentimental pick. But I went with Spiller, even though he’s the RB2 on Buffalo. Most rankings have those two indistinguishably ranked. I don’t know why I took Spiller. Gut feel, I guess.

I almost drafted Benson with my 4.02, but rolled the dice that he'd come back around to me while I knew Bush wouldn't. Most teams have 2 RB already and those that don't probably have rankings with at least 7 or 8 RB ahead of him. Benson is either about to have one of the best seasons of his career or he is going to put up numbers you'd expect from a RB2. I think his floor is 900-1000 total yards and 6-8 TD's, but I don't really know what his ceiling could be in this offense. I'd love to have 1400 total yards/10 TD's. Hopefully McCarthy and crew ride him like a horse.

only 1 WR went since my last pick: Demaryius Thomas. I don't like Peyton this year so he wasn't on the list of WRs to pick from. this means that my WR list is still the same than a few picks ago which means not worth to draft here.

surprisingly I am the only one with a LB till now so I am taking #2 too. For me and some so called experts this is D'Qwell Jackson. he had 115 solo tackles last season and that is fantasy gold in RIFC. he should get around 7pts per game alone from solo tackles. add some assists and peripheral stats and you get the occasional monster game and can may win a fantasy matchup on his own.

I find it interesting that loki was debating between Finley and Torrey Smith at 6.06, because I was offering to trade the pick for Smith before I finally settled on Finley.
I had the 8th upcoming pick when I built my queue. I made it 6 players long, with Finley first and 5 receivers. Woke up and the top 4 of the receivers were gone. So I decided to give a shot to trading for Smith, in case Finley didn't fall. I thought that last WR might fall to me in the next round anyway, but he didn't. I'm not in a good spot with my WRs at the moment. Was hoping I could grab Finley at this turn, as well as Reggie Wayne, but both just went. This is the point where I don't like the WRs much. There's a bunch of guys to choose from and it's hard to pick the right one. Because of that, I went with Britt who isn't fully healthy and should have a suspension coming. But the guy is talented and can easily produce top 10 WR numbers when he plays. You can't say that about any of the remaining WRs, so I'll take the risk with him and hope for the payoff.

7.01 Jason Witten, TE, DAL
Was a bit stuck on whether to take a 3rd RB here, another WR since I took a risk with Britt or grab Witten who carries risk himself. The RBs are clumped up and I hope 1 or 2 of them last until my next pick because I couldn't justify taking a backup here when my WR/TE really needed help. Witten could miss a week or two, hopefully not. I'm up to 3 guys in Richardson, Britt, and Witten who could really drag my team down the first week or two, so I may be off to a slow start.

I thought about a WR or TE here. after researching a few players Titus Young has the best potential to top 800 yards and 5 scores as a WR. A slightly lower amount of yards can be expected from Tony Gonzalez as the best remaining TE. I believe that an aging Gonzalez might be more likely available in a few picks when I'm up again so I took Young.

Titus Young is praised by coaches that he should break out this year. With Stafford he has the QB necessary to achieve this. Calvin Johnson may still see the most touches but with Stafford expected to again throw a lot there are plenty of touches to get and I hope that Young will be #2 target ahead of #undrafted#.

Ingram is the guy that the Saints want to lean on in the backfield. I don't expect 100 yard games but I do expect some TD's here and there along with his 30-80 yds per game. Fighting the urge to get cute and draft a back-up QB, with two more picks in front of me I've decided to forego the rankings I printed off and put three IDP in a queue. Two of them get some nice points from return yards and the other was a top scoring LB from last season. I don't know if Peterson or Webb will come close to scoring what they did last year or if Bowman will be as dominant, but I think I will be happy with one of these three on my team for this pick.

7.14 Randall Cobb, WR, GB
A nice feature of picking at the turn is that I get to take two players at once, relieving some of the stress of assessing which guy is most likely to survive another round. The downside is that I have to watch 22 players fly off the board while waiting.

I thought about taking Cobb 22 picks ago, but decided that was probably too early, even though I had no expectation that he’d survive to this point. Happy surprise! Last season, Cobb produced 118 points in this format. Of those, 38 were traditional offensive points, and 80 were from kick and punt returns. He ranked #38 among all WRs in total points.

For 2012, the rankings that I’ve looked at predict a significant uptick in offensive points for Cobb, something in the 85-ish point range. If he were to repeat his special teams production, a point total of 165 would have ranked him about 15th among all WRs in 2011. Even if his special teams results were cut in half, he still offers value at this stage of the draft. Worth a gamble for my WR3.

I do note that I now have two Packer WRs (Cobb and Nelson), which creates a week 10 bye problem. But a lot of things can change between now and week #10.

8.01 Colin McCarthy, LB, Ten
I was hoping to land Navarro Bowman here as my first IDP. As Maxwell Smart would say, “Missed it by that much!”

I do want to get started on IDPs, so I’ll take Colin McCarthy, who averaged 10.7 FP/G last season once he assumed the starting MLB spot for Tennessee. He’s not projected to be materially different than the next dozen or so LBs, but when we have 7 IDP slots to fill, you have to get started at about this juncture of the draft, and I expect a lot of IDPs to disappear in the next 22 picks. (I was wrong - only 3 IDPs went in the next two rounds.)

I did think about London Fletcher as well, but opted to go with a guy who was 13 years younger (in spite of the fact that RotoWire lists McCarthy as 112 years old.)

8.03 Fred Davis, TE, WAS
Wanted to wrap up my starting offense before going after IDP's. I don't personally think real highly of him but he was the highest TE available according to all the rankings I checked. I kept searching cheat sheets but no dice. He was the best by a long shot according to the "experts" (other than T Gonzalez, who I just flat out didn't want to take a chance on this season). Figured they must know something I don't so I went with it. Wiggs got Gresham 2-and-a-half rds later. Can't help but feel that he got a better deal.

I thought about him with my last pick and waited because 2 of the 3 managers until my next pick is due took a TE in round 1 and are unlikely to pick one here. luckily holt picked Fred Davis and not Tony Gonzalez, which I like much more.

Gonzalez seems to play his last season this year. For his age, he was great last season and there is hope he can repeat it one more time.

I had targeted Fred Davis or Tony Gonzalez at this spot, but they were drafted just before my turn came up. I did not like any of the remaining TEs and therefore went with another RB. Even though I am certain that MJD will return before the season opener, long holdouts like his either make the player ineffective for most of the season or be prone to injury. I like Jennings chances to get a lot of playing time in light of this.

Given the situation with MJD I needed to grab a 3rd RB early. I waited about a round too late because I would have liked to have had Ben Tate or Rashaad Jennings. Both guys went a few picks before it got back to me. I like Gerhart, particularly early in the season. Even if Peterson comes back by week 1 I expect that Minnesota will keep his load fairly light, giving some opportunity to Gerhart.

I’ve had great success taking my QB1 after most other teams, because I have a shrewd eye for elite QBs. Why, just look at this rationale from when I stole Cam Newton in round 13 last year:

I am the only team w/ just one WR (and he's not really even a WR1). I will take a chance on another guy who's been on the sidelines for a while w/ lingering issues. I like him better than DHB (I can't get past the couple of goose-eggs that DHB had in the middle of last season). I looked at a lot of different WRs here. Too many with week 5 and 7 byes, where I am already going to be struggling, but had to go this way anyway. Hopefully he can get healthy, stay healthy, and at least lead his team in yds and TDs. Not the RB I was hoping would still be here at this pick, guess I should have taken one instead of Witten last turn. Hopefully he gets enough goal line work to be a decent RB3 for byes. Obviously if Forte were to get hurt, Bush would have a major increase in value.

9.01 Santonio Holmes, NYJ, WR
While I'd rather not take a WR here and go LB instead, I feel my hand is forced. There would be even less available on the next turn, and with Britt being my 2nd WR, I needed to get a 3rd to hopefully solidy the position a bit. Holmes is risky himself, having health issues and the Jets offense looks horrendous. Despite that, he's their best offensive player and someone has to catch the ball there, and it should be him. Not expecting a lot, just enough to be able to plug in weekly until a late round pick comes on or I can grab someone in free agency.

Meachem was my second choice at 8.11 actually. Since he was still there I was debating between him, London Fletcher, and Andrew Luck( not really, but I would've put a wager that Luck would be taken at 9.05--Beezer really is following the same script from last season).
Anyway, Meachem was the highest WR on my draft list by a lot. He's shown flashes of brilliance w/ Brees. I am hoping he can flash more frequently with less options around him. Took him despite all the rumblings of chemistry problems. Here's to a few big hookups early in the year to ignite this relationship.

Since I took my QB1 really late, I did not want to wait on my QB2. Luck has good upside and is the perfect complement to Big Ben, except for the tiny issue that they have the same bye week.

Last year I selected the hot fantasy TE. His name was Jimmy Graham. That worked out pretty well. This year folks seem to really like Cook's skills and some say he could break out. 9.11 Beanie Wells, ARI, RB
I am one of the last few managers that are still missing 3rd RB and WR. I better close that holes soon, otherwise the remaining players will be gambles that the RB/WR ahead of them miss significant time on the field.

I don't know why Beanie fell that far. He was picked a lot earlier in all other 3 RIFC drafts and was long overdue, but nobody took him. Wells may have been injured in pre-season, but it seems that he will be 100% healthy for the start of the regular season. He has competition in unproven Ryan Williams who had also injury trouble in the pre-season. based on that I believe that the more experienced back will start in week 1, so it is Beanie's job to lose. I hope that he plays well early so that he can start for me in weeks 5 and 6 when Forte and Murray have their byes.

Gerhart was taken so it became IDP time. I don't know what to say about this. I read an interesting article about experiments with large groups of people doing things like guessing number of jelly beans in a jar. Turns out large groups of people are pretty smart, while individuals are morons. I'm being overly simplistic there, but point is that I prefer using averages of a vast number of cheat sheets and rankings over any individual rankings. This system is especially helpful with IDP's, since my first hand knowledge of most of them is pretty weak. Anyway, I took Trent Cole because he was the highest ranked IDP available according to The Borg (and I didn't google anything to cause me to disagree with the ranking).

Seven picks to go before I am up, so time to leave a queue and go to bed. I've got five players in the queue and am hoping to get either Wells or Webb. I just had to erase the rest of what I wrote because Wells went two picks before me. I really wish Wells had been here. The good news is that I've locked up the two highest scoring defensive backs from last season. That doesn't mean either will do the same this year, but it is a good gamble in this format. Webb is the primary kick and punt returner and Peterson returns punts along with being a starting corner.

10.01 Leon Washington, SEA, RB
With an offense of Sproles, Cobb, Hester, and Washington, I’ll probably lead the league in PR/KR points – although at this point, Hester and Washington are slated to begin the season on my bench. I’m hoping for 90-100 return points from each, and if I can add another 30-40 offense points, then I think I’ve got much better value than the traditional RB/WR candidates currently left on the board.

I thought about adding a backup QB here, since RG3 could be a bust – but thought that could wait. I also thought about adding an IDP at this stage. But I decided it was more important to provide serviceable backups at RB and WR. Barring injuries, either should be a capable fill-in as long as they maintain their special teams roles.

One of the first picks I made without typing up my rationale first. I don't regret the pick because he is near the top of my remaining ranked LB, I just realize I am drafting differently than everyone else and that is going to mean bad things for me if my starters don't produce and stay healthy. a few years ago he was the future stud. that didn't work out the last 2 seasons where he played a combined 15 games. If you add up the totals of these 15 games you get 764yds and 4 TDs. compare that with the 1312yds and 8TDs he had in 2009 and you see the potential. I hope that he gets something in between those numbers which would be 1000yds and 6 TDs. but that will only be the case if his rookie QB plays more like Cam Newton than Ryan Leaf. If he plays like Andy Dalton 750yds and 5 TD can be expected.

I forgot that importance of DEs in this league after the switch last year to starting 2 every week. The drop off on DLs can be huge so I'd prefer to have two stud DEs. I could have gone after a DE last round but the only guy I missed out on by waiting a round was Mario Williams. Would have been a bit of an upgrade but I'll take Wake. The thing I look for in DEs is usually at least double digit sack potential AND tackles. So many DLs only make a handful of tackles besides their sacks. I prefer knowing I'll get a few tackles every week at minimum and then the sacks on top of that.

Lofton will be ready for week 1. He's a top 10 LB and I'm a Sooners fan so this was an easy pick. He's with the Saints now and I'm not sure what impact that will have but I think he'll still be top 10 caliber. 87 solo and 60 assists last season. That's a lot of tackling.

I needed a 3rd WR starter and Boldin was at the top of my list. Last year was his worst season since 2004. I understand he isn't going to be putting up 2008 numbers (1000 yards, 11 TD's) but I think he can do a bit better than 900 yards and 3 TD's even in that run-first offense.

11.14 Chris Clemons, DE, Sea
12.01 Von Miller, LB, Den

IDPs have been flying off the board in the last 2 rounds, and I have only one so far. Time to get defensively serious – especially since I already have one backup for each of the offensive positions (except TE). I had some good experience with Clemons last year, and he’s among the top ranked DLs available. Miller doesn’t get the tackles that you might expect from a top LB, but he had 11.5 sacks and 23 QB hits last year. As a second year player, upside is expected.

I strongly considered taking Matt Shaub as my backup QB, but decided to wait one more turn. Even if Shaub is not available for my next pick, there are still a handful of other QBs with similar projections.

12.03 Lance Moore, WR, NO
Thought he was a pretty good reserve WR this late in the draft. With Meacham gone to the Chargers I think Moore is due for some more targets. He had a good off-season and has always been good for some huge games here and there. We'll see what happens. I kind of considered Amendola as another WR4 possibility but thought he might drop a little lower (graham cr. took him at 13.02). An IDP wouldn't have been a bad way to go here but I really didn't like how thin the ranks of draftable WR's was getting.

with over 20 picks due I put only 2 players in my queue in case this pick is up while I am still sleeping. in the morning I checked my emails and saw that I got Bess and had not to login to draftime to check if I'm up or not. 1 hour later I opened draftime and looked at the players that went only to discover that the 1st player from my queue went 1 pick earlier. Damn! Lance Moore would have been such a nice pick.

On to Bess: I don't know who will feeding him this season. Tannehill seems to be the QB for now, but who knows for how long. The additional plus for Bess is that he may return some kicks or punts this season. I don't know to what extent because he is still a starter at WR, but we will see. not bad for a WR4.

He is not injured so I am banking on 2011 being an aberration rather than the beginning of his decline. If so, he could put up top numbers for a LB.

12.14 Matt Schaub, QB, HOU
Having drafted Rivers, I knew I wanted to grab as good a backup as possible while being reasonable with the round I take them in. This looks like a good spot to me to grab Schaub. He's past his ADP and should be the top QB remaining. There are some young guys here I would have grabbed as well if more QBs had gone before this pick, and maybe they out perform Schaub, but they carry more risk since they have very little or no NFL experience. Hopefully Rivers plays well enough I only need him for the bye, but I need to be ready in case that's not how things pan out.

13.01 Ronnie Hillman, RB, DEN
I wasn't entirely sure where I should go with this pick when it got to me. I could have grabbed a pretty good DE here, some real solid LBs, or my pick of the remaining TEs and WRs since I'm exposed at those positions at the moment. I decided the IDPs could wait and I couldn't decide on a TE so I'll wait until my next pick if at least one of the guys I liked is still there. WR at this point I just don't like much. Most of the guys are the same and it doesn't really matter which one I get, which could be an issue. So I decided to grab a RB. Not sure if Hillman is the best option here, but he's got some upside and his bye week works well with what I currently have. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to grab a 4th RB, which I really needed since it's already round 13, that is behind an old vet in a Manning led offense.

Harper recorded 7.5 sacks last season which made him a top 5 fantasy back. The sack number will probably go down a little, but not as far as some believe. 13.11 Antoine Bethea, DB, Ind
with 3 LBs and no DBs on my roster it was time to get some DBs that will tackle a lot. I like it more when a players gets more tackles and an occasional INT, than a player that goes for the INT and does not see much tackles.

Bethea belongs to the 1st category. Charles Woodson would be someone that belongs to the 2nd category. I considered a few more options here but Bethea had too much value here. The Indy offense is a dark horse so it can be expected that their defense will be on the field a lot. more defense means more opportunities for Bethea. he had 80 solo tackles last year, but no INT. add a lot of assisted tackles and some defended passes and he is capable of getting 7 to 8pts on average and this is more than can be expected for most other DBs at this point.

Honestly I was in a hurry to leave for lunch and just made a snap decision. IDP's had gotten to a point where I figured it didn't matter if I took one now or a few rounds later. My starting TE is F Davis and he's no sure thing. I had Tamme on my squad in 2010 when D Clark went down and Manning targeted him 93 times in 10 games. He hasn't done much in the preseason and he has some competition and may split snaps so this may turn out to be a stinker.

We have to start two LB and have the flex IDP position. I like to have three solid LB and DB to cover the flex position and cover for bye weeks. I played roulette long enough on backup QB. Smith gives me a dependable, if not stellar option that I can confidently plug in as needed. The other options considered were Locker, Palmer, and Dalton. I thought Smith provided the safest option to pair with the potential volatility and uncertainty of RG3.

14.01 Jason Babin, DL, Phi
Coming of a 2011 with 18 sacks (incl. 6 games with 2 or more) and 25 QB hits, and was one of only 5 DLs to average better than 8 pts/game. He’s recovering from a partial tear in his left calf muscle, but indications are that he should be ready for game #1. If not, I’ll have to line up a sub on the fly, as I won’t necessarily draft a 3rd DL.

I had Babin, Mendenhall, and a few other undrafted TE, WR, and RB in my draft list for this pick. I am still missing a couple starters for the DL position, but I think the remaining talent is very similiar. There are a lot of rounds to go where it is about depth and betting on players to perform much better than their ADP. I am hoping Mendenhall is one of those picks that can come in late in the season and provide good fantasy points. If my two starters can stay healthy, I won't need him early in the season. I like the risk/reward with this pick.

As a Sooners fan and a Rams Fan I've been a frequent fantasy owner of Bradford. Maybe this will be the year. most that I said for my last pick Bethea is also true for Byrd. He also gets above average tackles for his position. Not as much as Bethea though, but he makes that up with some INTs and more interestingly with some fumbles. maybe he gets lucky and returns one of these turnovers for a TD. This is where you hit fantasy gold: when you know that a player of yours is capable of scoring up to 20pts in any given week. of course there will be more 5pt games than 20pt games, but the potential is there.

With Witten likely to miss week 1 and my risky WRs I needed to grab a good TE to fill in when needed. Daniels can do that. Houston has a good offense and hopefully he can stay healthy and get close to the numbers he put up a few years ago.

15.01 Kendall Wright, WR, TEN
This pick is a little questionable. It's about right ADP wise but I also need IDPs pretty badly since I've went offense the previous 3 picks. I went with Wright over some higher ranked WRs because of Britt. Britt won't be playing week 1, so I can toss Wright in if needed, although Daniels will likely be covering. This is more of a handcuff pick in case Britt can't stay healthy or does something stupid again. Wright has upside, but not expecting much from a rookie. Good candidate to be dropped between weeks 2 and 4 once I know my WR/TEs starters are set.

a few picks until this pick came due I was wondering why no Defense was picked yet. I was still under the impression that we had 1 defense and 1 DL in this league. turned out that we changed the ruling last year and I couldn't remember. I guess I am getting a bit old.

now I also know why 2 DLers went in round 5. over 30 DLers will be drafted and only a few of them are really better than the rest and a lot of them aren't even on the field all the time.

I like Sheard because he is still young, so there is room for improvement. he already was great last year with 8.5 sacks and 5 forced fumbles. similar things are expected this year and I would not wonder myself if he gets double digit sacks.

Outside of 2, maybe 4 guys, DL are a dime a dozen.Maybe I should have waited longer to take my 2nd DE. Oh well. Long had 13.5 sacks last year but like most DL he doesn't get many tackles otherwise. What I hate is those 1 point games from a DE. They're going to happen but you try to minimize it. Long scored 6 or more points in 11 out of 16 games last year, and didn't have any zero point games. Worth a shot. As always though, I'll be keeping my eye on the FA's. I grabbed Calais Campbell off the FA list last year. Something always turns up.

15.13 Doug Baldwin, WR, Sea
I needed a 4th WR and one that didn't have a week 8 bye. He is coming off a hamstring injury, but should be healthy before I need to insert him into the line-up. He had just under 800 yards and 4 TD's last year. I am curious what he can do with a new QB who seems like he can sling it all over the field. Speaking of which, I considered Wilson with 14.02 and he would have been on my short list for this pick.

15.14 Felix Jones, RB, Dal
Need some RB depth, and although Felix will not be the workhorse back at Dallas, that role didn’t necessarily suit him anyway. He should still get ample touches, and if so, he’s averaged 5.1 yards per carry and is among the NFL leaders in YAC, so big plays have the potential to offset the limited plays from scrimmage. In any event, he starts the season as my RB4, so there’s not much downside.

16.01 Charles Tillman, DB, Chi
After the two DBs who benefit from return yardage, there are a bunch of candidates with very similar expected production. Tillman was at the top of that list last year, averaging almost 9 pts/game. I’ll be happy with more of the same.

I am surprised the McFadden owner hasn't snagged this handcuff yet as McFadden has yet to play a full 16 games in any season. As a Raider fan, I hope he does this year and that this was a mostly wasted pick. Then again, if the Raiders are smart they will spell McFadden a bit more and try to keep him healthy. Jones has a lot of talent and speed. If he can break one around the corner and get into the open field, he can score from anywhere.

16.04 Jacoby Ford, WR, OAK
Ford is a gamble this season, but that is what you are searching for at this time in the draft. I see few issues with him:
- I am not sold on Carson Palmer or QB2 who is likely to play some games this year
- He was injured during pre-season and might not be 100% come week 1
- because of that he has competition to be WR #3.

The positive things:
- he showed flashes of what he can do in the last 2 seasons
- he will at least be the kick returned for Oakland. and he is a good one, so that alone should get me at least 40pts out of him.

16.09 David Harris LB NYJ
Reports are saying that Harris is going to be healthy and ready for week 1. If that's true, you can pencil him in for a minimum of 80 total tackles for the year. And that's minimum. And the upside is probably 120 total tackles and a handful of sacks and INTs. I also think that the Jets D will spend plenty of time on the field this year, so add that to sack totals. My only concern is Harris staying healthy but right now they say he's good to go.

I had Barron and Pollard in the queue. I loved this guy when he was with, ummm, no nevermind I've never heard of him before this draft. 16.14 Jason McCourty, CB, TEN
I have to grab IDPs now, otherwise I'll be starting some guys I'd rather not, even if I can usually find one or two studs on waivers. I was hoping for Pollard here, but ended up with McCourty instead. I usually don't like having corners for DB, outside of Peterson last year, but McCourty put up 85 solos last year. Titans corners have performed well the past few years and I hope this year is no different.

17.01 Cliff Avril, DE, DET
I have my rationales from last year open and I notice my 18th round pick then was Avril, and here is part of the rationale:

I had really hoped to grab Jason Pierre-Paul maybe a round or two earlier, but somehow he was scooped up.

Kind of wierd, having JPP now and all (and just imagine JPP and Allen last year). Too bad I couldn't grab him in the 17th though right? Anyways, hopefully I don't drop Avril before he actually puts up numbers like I did last year. I ended up chasing DEs to start with Allen last year. I waited too long to grab some others I'd rather have, but hopefully Avril can be an every week starter for me.

17.05 Shane Vereen, RB, NE
With the defense largely built out, it's time to start buying lottery tickets. My criteria for these guys is pretty simple:

- talent
- iffy situations ahead of them
- reasonable chance of improved clarity by the end of week 1

I want my late guys to be players that I can make a good decision on by the end of week 1. Even in this deep of a league, players emerge from the waiver wire. These criteria increase the chances that I either get a player that's worth keeping (awesome!) or can safely cut them with no remorse (that works too).

Vereen fits this mode to a T. The Law Firm is out of town, Ridley is probably the starter, but the mix is in question. Vereen has skills. So we'll see what happens!

No receiver other than maybe Gates jumps out at me in San Diego. But we know that they will sling the ball around and someone has to catch them. I expect his tackle numbers to remain high this season, and he will hopefully have a big play or two to make him a top 10 DB.

17.11 Jonathan Dwyer, RB, PIT
I felt the need to further backup my RB, WR or TE.

The latest talk in Pittsburgh is that Dwyer could unseat Redman or at least get a significant amount of carries. He looked better in pre-season play and I guess at one point they need to go with the hot hand, which could be Dwyer.
Dwyer also fits my bye-weeks and could even be the guy to replace Forte and Murray in week 5 and 6 if Mendenhall isn't back by then.

I also considered the Redsinks backfield, but there are too many bodies for only a few RB carries and nothing is decided yet.
another option would have been a 2nd TE. Looking at the teams until I pick again I don't think that they are likely to pick the TE I want, so I can wait one more round.

This might turn out to be a steal here in the 17th. He's small but explosive - very similar to D Sproles. With the Steelers RB situation this year, who knows what could happen? He's an excellent pass target and super return man (had TD punt returns of 78 and 90 yards called back on penalties in the last preseason game, had a 57 yd reception for TD in his 1st preseason game, also had a 41 yd TD rush in game 3). I believe the Steelers will find a way to get this guy on the field. He's probably the best in the open field on their team.

In 2010 Santana was an 1100 yard, 6 TD receiver. I've had him on multiple teams over the last 9 years and think he still has something left in the tank. I drafted him as a bye week filler/injury replacement player and feel good about this pick.

17.14 Dustin Keller, TE, NYJ
It seems that all offensive players on the Jets are being shunned this year – and probably with good reason. Nevertheless, Keller ranked #11 in fantasy points among tight ends last year, and if the Jets have trouble throwing the ball downfield, Keller could be the man. As the 20th TE drafted, and in round 17, I’m getting a substantial Jets discount here.

He may not be ready for week 1 (hamstring), but unless Gronkowski gets hit by a bus before then, I won’t be starting Keller anyway. His bye week collides with Gronk’s, but that’s not until week #9, so I can’t worry much about that now. He’s simply an injury fill-in. Or possibly trade bait, if he works out. But that seems like a long shot.

18.01 Quintin Mikell, DB, StL
Back to my IDP corps, where I currently have 2 DLs, 2 LBs, and one DB. Mikell moves to a new team this year, but should continue to be a steady performer. Ranked #15 in total points last year among DBs. His week #9 bye meshes well with my IDP unit.

In his rookie season he put up 550 yards and 3 TDs (targetted 73 times out of 450 attempts by Cassel). I have a stud TE that I can start weekly, but I think this was a good spot to gamble on a player coming back big from an injury.

18.04 Kendall Hunter, RB, SF
I really wanted Dustin Keller. I have not thought about Guru taking him because he has the same bye-week than Gronkowski, so I was a little surprised that he took him. Of course with someone like Gronkowski you can field 2 TEs in a lineup.

No other TE stood out. Moeaki who was also taken between my picks wasn't on my radar this early.

I though about defenders, but I only need 1 more starter, a DL'er. I already have one in mind but this seems to be too early for him. I already gambled on a WR (Ford) and I did not want to gamble on a QB only to see him replaced by week 2 or 3.
That leaves me with some backup RBs that might eat into starters carries. Kendall Hunter is such a guy. I see Frank Gore declining this year and Hunter then needs to fill the void. Hopefully for me, I will see how good he will do this.

I felt it was smart to grab another DE since I went a little late on my starters. In a perfect world I have to play Skelton or a different QB only once. For now my money is on Skelton to do this. This may change as soon as one of the current starters goes down or any of the remaining ones unexpectedly puts up huge numbers.

I waited a pretty long time to draft my first DL starter, but am very happy to get a healthy Osi. The key word is healthy, because when he plays he puts up nice fantasy points. In 2010 he was the 7th ranked DL, putting up 126 points in this format. Averaging 7.3 points a game last season (where he was dinged up all year), he would have scored 116 points had he played a full 16 games which would have placed him in the 6th-7th range for DL. Osi finally gets to be a free agent after this season, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him even more motivated this year.

The bigger risk is that he’s 34. However, except for 2009 (when he essentially missed the whole season), he’s played in 16 games each season.

Arenas is my third DB, and probably will be a bye week filler, unless he shows me a reason to promote him. He should get about half of his points from defensive play, and half from return yardage. Averaged 7.5 points/g in this format last year.

I was on the road and left a queue for the last few picks. I had quite a few DL listed for this pick and the last pick so I could secure my two starters. I'm not really sure why I was able to get Smith in the 20th round. Here is a guy who has scored 104 points (16th) and 117 points (11th) the last two years. He plays on a great defense and is a perfect fit for my team.

He tackles a lot, he sacks some. he is still young. a good combination for a late round defense lineman. he was even worth it to add him despite having the same bye as the first DL I picked. but there is long season to play until I need to decide what to do in week 10. most likely at least one of my DLer's will hit the waiver wire early and I don't have the bye-week problem anymore.

At this point of the draft, I have a complete team (I think) so I'm drafting to cover injuries and byes. Considering Vick's injury history I think Foles gets time by the 5th week. Does that make him worth the draft pick? Probably not, but it will probably open up options for bye weeks and trades.

I wasn't worried about backup QB since I have Brady as my starter. If he isn't playing then I'm probably in trouble. But I didn't think any legit QB2s would be left after this round. I was surprised that Cassel was still hanging around. I actually thought I may have forgot to cross him off. He'll be more on par with Alex Smith numbers this season but that offense does have weapons. I felt like this was a great value at this spot.

There's a 1% chance that he will be the primary ball carrier against Oakland and do well in the role. The Chargers have shown that they will happily let someone else vulture TDs from Matthews. Ronnie Brown is just not the guy, and last year proved that in Philly.

Most likely Brinkley doesn't last until week 2.

I figured I'd wrap up my IDP starters with this pick and grab a DB. Got my top guy in Landry, so I'm pleased with that but it's not a huge deal because he likely will not put up the numbers he did 2 years ago in this Jets defense. But the individual potential is there, so I'll take a shot on him.

21.01 Bernard Pierce, RB, BAL
This guy is likely going to just eat a roster spot all year for nothing, but I wanted to grab him just in case Rice got hurt. He's not a high priority handcuff since I'm not even sure if he'll hold the #2 spot and would probably split carries, but better to have something than nothing if Rice does go down. The rest of the remaining RBs are in the same situation of needing an injury or terrible play, so just makes sense to handcuff Rice here. I probably would have taken Hardesty in this spot if he was available and tried grabbing Pierce the following round.

I usually end up drafting extra IDPs late in drafts because the talent level is usually much better than the offensive lottery tickets still floating around. As a rookie, David is a bit of an upside pick. But in 27 college games he put up 285 tackles and 11.5 sacks. And they say he's looking good throughout camp. I'll take that. Also, I may not need him as an IDP but he's a nice insurance policy against injury and a potential trade chip.

21.13 Brandon Weeden, CLE, QB
I really botched-up getting a back-up QB, especially because I knew how everyone drafts back-ups early. 9 bench spots is actually ridiculous for a league that only starts 15 players. I've seen players drafted that won't be drafted in keeper leagues with smaller benches. We really need to crank up the starters by another 3 or drop 4 bench spots. So anyway, way back at 12.02, I thought about drafting Schaub instead of Leshoure. Then in the 14th round I almost pulled the trigger on Wilson, but was hoping he would fall more. That's pretty much been my story with several positions this draft; uncomfortable with taking a player in a certain spot when I see better value elsewhere and then finding myself drafting a much lower talent level at that position rounds later. I really need Romo to stay healthy or I could be in big trouble.

I wanted a third DB for depth/bye week replacement. Landry gets a lot of tackle opportunities and is a solid player. I still need a kicker and just realized I only have two more picks to go. after my last pick I researched the available DBs because I wanted to take my #3 with this pick. as soon as I found Dawan Landry I stopped searching because I had my guy. a few hours later Holt expires and Landry was queued up by someone else. So I had to dig again into the DB pool and search for someone else. I already marked Babineaux a few hours ago but was not sure about him. some depth charts have him only as a #2, others as a #1. so called experts saw him as a good defender worth newly signed 5 million contract. I don't know what to expect here. if he starts and gets a similar number of tackles than last year until he shared time with Chris Hope in the last few games. if he does not start he is waiver wire fodder.

Sanders has decent upside in that he'll be the slot receiver in PIT, he's only one injury away from starting, and the steelers are really thin at wideout. Add to it the facts that he's been a contributor in the past, he'll return some kicks and there's no great TE to steal those targets.

23.11 David Nelson, WR, BUF
because of bye-weeks I would have only 3 available WRs in round 5 and 11. Week 11 is far away, but I need a plan for week 5. I know there are waivers, but with the new blind bid system you don't know how high some hot WRs are valued by others. From todays point of view the old system was more predictable because you only had a maximum of 13 players to go before you are up and there are at least some at other positions so putting a few WRs in you queue got you one. especially when the waiver order is reset the first few weeks.
this is all not the case this year so I'll better take one now and if he does not work I can exchange him against a more targeted receier come week 5.

speaking of Nelson: his yardage may stay around 600yds. but the additional value are the above average TD numbers he puts up, thanks to his size. If he can continue being a red-zone threat he may do fine for me.

24.04 Lawrence Tynes, K, NYG
every year I am thinking about taking a kicker in the last round of the draft or shortly before gameday on Sunday. If an olympic runner would have been available here I would have taken him. this was not possible because:
1) silver medalist Jeff Demps was put on IR by the Patriots
2) 3-time gold medalist Usain Bolt, The Legend, was not available at MFL

so I had to take a kicker. since they are all a dime a dozen I took one on an offense that should score a lot and that also has a late bye-week. this way I can observe the kicker market early on and then take a similar scoring one that already had his bye.
there is hope that there will be a lot of TDs from from Eli to Cruz with an XP from Tynes. this would be an automatic 11pts for my team, no matter how deep the throw was.

24.11 Vick Ballard, RB, IND
Happy to throw one more RB dart. Who knows how much Ballard plays this season. Maybe he starts at some point, or maybe he's buried on the depth chart. For the chance he starts, I will take him here over a backup TE, a 4th LB, or a 3rd DE.

24.14 Mike Tolbert, RB, CAR

Last year I grabbed Patrick Peterson in this round, and well...that's pretty much one of the best 24th round picks in this league ever, if not the best. While I'd love to repeat that, it's not going to happen. Tolbert isn't going to do a whole lot unless JStew or DWill get hurt. Just a lottery ticket here.

FYI: During this whole draft I was on vacation and drafting with an IPHONE. I can't say I could really strategize too much but I did the best I could.

1.02 2 Foster, Arian HOU RB : I knew would have one of bes RB's for this year. Running and Receiving yards in a run heavy team.

2.13 27 White, Roddy ATL WR : I believe this is Roddy White's last year as a WR1. Matt Ryan goes to him when the game is on the line.

3.13 41 Gates, Antonio SDC TE : Gates is healthy and has the most experience with Rivers.

4.13 55 Hillis, Peyton KCC RB : Hillis will get me goal line TD's. He will be a good matchup play.

5.02 58 Green-Ellis, BenJarvus CIN RB : I wanted to secure another starter with a run heavy team that run's the ball most of the time at the goal line.

6.13 83 Wayne, Reggie IND WR : Reggie had a relatively good year with horrible qb's last year. Luck will go to him often for sure. Wanted to secure a another Primary receiver on a team.

7.02 86 Williams, Ryan ARI RB : Beannie Wells ... do i have to say anything else. I take a hurt R Williams over a healthy Beannie any day. R W will be the main RB in Arizona.

8.13 111 Freeman, Josh TBB QB : I wanted RG3 but he was taken just before. I believe he will bounce back and be a top 10 QB this year.

9.02 114 Little, Greg CLE WR : Another WR1 on his team. He still got 60 + catches with a horrible QB.

10.13 139 Cushing, Brian HOU LB : I love cushing. Looking for a top 10 LB.

11.02 142 Campbell, Calais ARI DE : I had Calais last year and he is a beast.

12.13 167 Chancellor, Kam SEA S : Chancellor will build on his rookie season and has more experience now.

13.02 170 Amendola, Danny STL WR : Probable the only reliable guy Bradford can throw to.

14.13 195 Mincey, Jeremy JAC DE : Jax D is strong this year. Mincey should be top 10 this year.

15.02 198 Conner, Kavell IND LB : Not sure why i took this guy...

16.13 223 Palmer, Carson OAK QB : Good matchup play when i will need to plug him in.

17.02 226 Rhodes, Kerry ARI S

18.13 251 Jacobs, Brandon SFO RB : Prob will have some value if Gore goes down.

19.02 254 Manningham, Mario SFO WR : I think Manningham will come out strong in the 2nd half when Moss slows down.

20.13 279 Tebow, Tim NYJ QB : TEEEEEBOW.

21.02 282 Carter, Delone IND RB : ...

22.13 307 Hanson, Jason DET PK : Best kicker available.

23.02 310 Clark, Dallas TBB TE : I think Clark will have a Tony G type of year.

24.13 335 James, Bradie HOU LB : Needed one more LB.
