Subject: RIFC 2013: Rationale collection thread

  Posted by: Guru - [330592710] Sun, Aug 25, 2013, 17:42

As briefly discussed in the "getting started" thread, I'm going to try a slightly different approach in assembling the draft rationales.

You have a choice. You may either post your rationale in the comment area next to the associated pick on the MFL draft page,
- or -
you may post each rationale in this thread.

Regardless, each rationale is due no later than two rounds in arrears. I understand that, especially when queues are used, staying within two rounds will be difficult. However, please try to stay relatively current.

I will set up a master thread for all Rationales that will be organized in the proper draft sequence. I haven't yet figured out the most efficient way to do it, but I'll do it in some fashion that allows for periodic updates during the draft.

I should clarify that if you post a comment on the draft board, I'll use that unless you post something here as well. Anything posted in this thread trumps anything posted at NFL.

Draft position. I chose slot #7 odd/8 even because I hate long waits when you are stuck at the ends. Also any run that happens doesn't leave you out.

1.08. Alfred Morris RB WAS.
I was so very glad this guy fell to me. I picked him up late last year and he won me three leagues! If shady had been there for picking, it would have been a very difficult decision, but khahan took shady at 1.05.

Morris is the workhorse of the WASH offense and I hope that this year is as good as last.

2.07. Peyton Manning. QB DEN.
This was a scary pick as there are a lot of good QB's in the league. I worried that it was too early for a QB. That said, I think Peyton will out point many of the RB/WR left. I also think the DEN running game is suspect and he has a ton of receivers to throw to. I've never had Peyton before and I hope he has an awesome season!

Slot position - 5
I didn't have much choice as I picked 2nd from last. It was this or dead center and personally in football and baseball drafts I've never liked picking in the middle.

Pick 1.5 - LeSean McCoy, RB Phi
He always disappoints, but I've always blamed that on Andy Reid. This choice was between McCoy and Jamaal Charles. I went to an Eagles Panthers championship game a few years ago. McNabb was throwing well and Pinkston et al were dropping passes left and right. Every time Duece Staley got the ball he'd break out for 9 yrds or so. Yet Reid just kept going pass after pass after incomplete pass. Staley ended up with like 7 carries on the day. Now that Reid is in KC, his style of scripted, unbending coaching will have its ups and downs there. I want no part of that.

Slot #6: I saw 7 top RBs but i didn't want draft from top 3.

1.6. Jamaal Charles, RB, KC
According the health status of Foster, Charles remained my first pick. He can product many fantasy points also in just 1 or 2 plays.

draft slot #10
In this kind of draft picking at the end should get you better "stars" than picking at the front. I don't like to pick at the turn, so #10 is the latest slot I am comfortable with.

1.10 Arian Foster, RB, Houston Texans
I may have tanked my season already. the more picks after #3 were taken the more it looked like everyone is stepping away from Foster. maybe they did because of some obvious reasons: he got off PUP a few days ago, received an enormous amount of carries the last few seasons and everyone is expecting him to bust this season.
I would not have taken him at something like #7 or lower but at #10 I think he is worth the risk.

I expect that he sees less carries than in the past. hopefully this helps him staying fresh and raises his declining yards per carry. in the end he may end up with a similar amount of rushing yards (1400) and TDs (12) as in the last 3 seasons. very solid numbers for a rusher. I only have to knock on wood that he is really over his various injuries.

pre draft I dreamed of getting Calvin Johnson. Would not have thought that he goes as #4. put he has the potential to score more TDs than last year while getting the same yardage so he may be worth it.

0.09 - I thought there were 9 RBs and 1 WR that stood out (ADP, Martin, Spiller, Charles, McCoy, Rice, Foster, Richardson, Lynch, and Calvin Johnson) and #9 gave me an insurance spot if one of those guys got injured, while still giving me a relatively early pick in rounds 2-4.

1.09 Trent Richardson, RB, CLE
Per the list above, my choice was between TRich, Rice, and Foster. If healthy, I don't think Foster outscores either of the other 2 by a wide margin, so he doesn't justify the risk at this pick in a 14-team league. It was essentially a coin flip between Rice and TRich, but since they both put up similar numbers last year and I think the Browns will be better than last year and the Ravens will be worse, I went with TRich. I also think TRich is less likely to share carries.

2.10 Cam Newton, QB Car

I was going to do it - RB, RB in rounds 1 and 2. QB is so deep, there will be quality qb's in the mid rounds but no so much RB. So Reggie Bush is my guy. I don't like any of the other RB's out there too much. Bush should put up solid #s in Det. But then Cam is still there. Always will have a soft spot for him after he helped propel me INTO this league last year. And when he got his new OC last season he was even better. I honestly expect him to be a top 10 producer overall this year and here he is falling to me outside the top 20 even. And I think there is a bit of a drop off in potential QB production after him. So screw my plans.

Slot Selection 11

I wanted to grab what I think is a solid RB while still benefitting from picking earlier in rounds 2 through 4. At pick 11 I should get one of my top 10 RBs assuming Calvin is drafted. More WRs/QBs going before me will improve that further.

1.11 Ray Rice, RB, BAL

Funny, last year I had the 1.01 and chose Rice over Foster. This year it looked like I may have been taking Foster if Rice went right in front of me, but I ended up with Rice again. Extremely happy with this pick as Rice can finish as a top 5 RB and is unlikely to underperform his 1.11 selection.

1.03 CJ Spiller, RB, BUF
All things being equal, I think I would have targeted the 13-14th picks selection in the draft, however, I didn’t have that luxury, so I targeted 1.03 with the hope of landing Martin or Spiller here. I also considered A.Foster with this pick, but I really was uncomfortable with taking him due to his extremely high workload. Spiller has that escape-ability, to be able to go for big TD runs. Last year, my TRIO of RBs were: A.Foster, Trent Richardson, CJ Spiller… and they are pretty much the reason why I’m back in the RIFC this year.

Did not get to choose slot.

1.07 Marshawn Lynch, RB, SEA
Do to the scarcity of top RBs decided to choose a RB with this pick. Saw what I considered a drop off after the first 8 RBs on my list (Peterson, Martin, Lynch, Spiller, McCoy, Charles, Richardson, Foster), so I was sure to get one of these with pick 7 and none would be available in round 2. I was surprised Lynch was still available, though I would have been OK with any of the others. I thought I could get one of my top rated QBs (Rodgers, Brees, or Manning) in round 2. Lynch has been one of the top fantasy RBs the last two seasons. I expect similar numbers this season.

2.04 Dez Bryant, WR, DAL

It's really difficult for me to not go RB RB in this setup, but it's also really hard for me to not take Dez when he's available at this point. I've had a mancrush on him since he came in to the league and now he's finally arrived. I'll take what should be a surefire top 5 WR and hope I can land a RB I like in round 3.

2.05 Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars
I usually go RB-RB in the first 2 rounds. after I got Foster in round 1 I was not sure I would be able to do that. Too many RB have issues coming into the season. some of them are injured, some of them are underperforming in pre-season, some of them are rookies and some of them are not yet a clear #1.

Thankfully some unexpected players were picked in front of me: Drew Brees, Dez Bryant and David Wilson.

I hope that none of these reasons stated above apply to Jones-Drew. yes he was injured last season but it looks like he is completely over it. the depth at RB in Jacksonville was better in the past so it is expected that he gets a heavy workload. More carries is usually better than less carries. if he gets around 300 that result in 1300 yards and 8 TD's I would be happy with that. And don't forget that he also contributes in the passing game. A busy season is ahead of him. hopefully he is not busy waiting for MRI's.

Slot Selection: #12

Choosing 9th I had my pick of a 2-5, 7 and 12. I went with 12 because I thought I would be able to get one of the second tier RBs or if I didn't like anyone available I would go with a WR or Jimmy Graham. I like being towards the end of a round and I definitely like being able to get 3 top 30 talents.

Pick 1.12: Drew Brees, QB, NO
I did not expect Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers to be available here. QB is deep this season, but I can't pass on the guy who has thrown for 5000 yards and been #1 in scoring in the past 2 seasons. What's not to like? He gets his Head Coach/Playcaller back this season, his team is going to have to put up a ton of points to be competitive this season, and one of the best TEs really starting to blossom into a beast.

Oh great I have buyers remorse and I should have gotten a RB. I never draft QB first, ever.

Pick 2.03: David Wilson, RB, NYG
I could go WR... Haha no. If he stays out of Coughlin's doghouse he could have a huge fantasy season. 1200 yards rushing, 300 yards receiving, 8-10 total TDs. Good numbers for a RB2, but when you combine his KR duties, and he becomes a bottom tier RB1. I was also looking at SJax and CJ2K but I was very happy to see them drafted before me so I could clear my conscience and take Wilson.

Pick 3.03: Reggie Bush, RB, DET
This is an interesting pick for me. I don't think he'll really run the ball that much, maybe 15 times a game, but he's the clear #1 back for Detroit and with so many teams focused on shutting down Megatron, I think he'll see 120 balls thrown his way. If he gets 80 receptions for 650 yards I think he'll also run the ball for 1000 yards and if he can get 8 TDs then this might be a major steal. But there's always injury concerns with Reggie, he's only played 15 games 3 times in his career.

2.06 Darren Sproles, RB, NO
Sproles is a very consistent performer in any format (when healthy, of course), but especially so when return yards count. He was the 13th highest scoring RB in our format last year despite missing 3 games, and he was the #3 RB in 2011. The New Orleans offense should still be productive, and I don't see a reduced role for him. He could easily outscore a few of the elite RBs. In a 14-team league, I didn't feel like gambling on a lesser RB when I could have this guy starting every week.

If I hadn't picked Sproles, I may have picked Jimmy Graham. I was surprised Graham wasn't drafted sooner.

2,08 Aaron Rodgers, QB, GB
The top QBs always get the most fantasy points using our scoring system. Last year the only non-QB to crack the top ten was Adrian Peterson at number 7. Rodgers is my top rated QB and has been in the top two in fantasy points the last two seasons. There always seems to be a significant gap in fantasy points between the top 3-5 QBs and that next tier, so I think it is important to draft one from the top tier. Rodgers is one the most highly skilled QBs. I also think he will again be one GB leaders in running though he doesn't have to run for many yards to earn that distinction. But that indicates that he will be passing a lot again and he seems the thrive even with a weak OL.

0.04 Draft Slot #1
With the draft order draft taking place so early this year, I was still fully in baseball mode at the time and not really prepared to make a selection. I did a basic analysis to see which picks might make the most sense, from which picks 1 and the bottom of the round rose to the top. I decided I was comfortable enough with Adrian Peterson to not get into the uncertainty of who would still be available at the end of round 1, so I pulled the trigger. It also didn’t hurt that I had a lot of success last year from the same slot in AAA#1.

1.01 Peterson, Adrian MIN RB
Almost every resource I looked at had Peterson as the clear #1 pick this year, and my independent investigation did little to combat that perception. His track record at RB is rivaled by only Arian Foster, but the Texan is dealing with some meaningful injury concerns at the moment. I’m expecting this year to look a lot more like 2010-11 than 2012, but upside certainly exists.

3.07 Marques Colston WR NO
I have had Colston on a least one fantasy team every year I have been doing this stuff! So this year, I wanted to make a change! I lined up Julio (whom I have also had a lot), Andre (had him the year he was major injured...) and Larry, followed by Colston as my "default" choice. Well, wouldn't you know, they went at 3.01, 3.05 and 3.06 respectively. So welcome back Marques! No catches in the pre season because I know you are saving it up for a monster year!

4.08 Luke Keuchly LB CAR
It's all about the points. I looked at his projected points (~160) and looked at the available RB, WR, TE and didn't see anyone close. Besides offense can be boom or bust, while IDP can be really steady. This is our second IDP off the board as Holt took JJ (at ~178, he was my first IDP choice for this round) at 3.02. We think alike! My next rounds will focus on building the offense.

Draft slot 13

The back end of the draft has been my preference ever since we started using the Banzai draft (whenever that was). I didn't like the prospects of getting shut out of two RB on rd 1/2 but the 13th slot gave me the best shot at getting J.J. Watt and Gronkowski in 3 and 4. My victory in this league last season was primarily due to drafting Adrian Peterson in the 2nd rd and Alfred Morris in the 17th or so. So I figure I'll try to get lucky again and catch lightning in a bottle with picks like Gronk and Watt.

2.12 Jimmy Graham, TE, NO
I found myself in an interesting quandary here. I wasn’t expecting to have the choice of Graham or J.Jones here, but the mini-QB run made some guys I expected to go to slip-down. Graham was a consensus 1st rounder last year (along with Gronk) so his value in theory should/could be even higher this year. Also, I have the feeling the Saints are going to be rejuvenated this year, and looking to put up some BIG games again.

3.12 Tom Brady, QB, NE

I had a 4 player queue built, and I was the 4th pick coming… and this time, the managers in front of me, did more/less what I expected. I didn’t necessarily want a QB here, I would have preferred a WR/RB, but being at work with limited time to think, I decided to go with my original pick. It’s always nice to be able to pick up a player from your favorite team once and awhile too… hopefully I won’t go full-out homer with this draft. ;)

3.04 Randall Cobb, WR, GB

I never imagined I wouldn't have 2 RBs through round 3, but I'm just not enamored with the RBs available here and Cobb could actually improve upon last year. His receiving stats should go up, but I'm not entirely sure he'll be handling all of the returns. His value completely hinges on the returns and if he's taken off or has them reduced significantly now that he's a starter this pick could end up being pretty bad. I've felt Cobb's been overvalued all offseason for dynasty and in most redrafts, even traded him away in a dynasty and now here I am taking him as the 7th WR off the board. Hard to ignore a guy who outscored Calvin in this format last year though.

2.09 Stevan Ridley, RB, NE

My draft plan was picking up two RBs in first two rounds. I choose Ridley, while top receivers out for New England, so I'm looking for busy season for Ridley. My other option was Reggie Bush.

3.09 Victor Cruz, WR, NYG

After the second round I believed to land on Bowe or Colston in third. Surprised, Cruz available. He is young, talented and has serious game-breaking abilities. Happy with that pick.

3.06 Larry Fitzgerald, WR, ARZ

Fitzgerald has long been one of the most talented and most difficult to cover WR in the league. However, in recent years, the QB play in the desert has been lacking. Hopefully this year is different and he can be a top 8-10 WR. Or maybe he is just getting old and the QB isn't the problem.

I didn't really consider anyone else here. I have my 2 RBs, was too early for Gronk, and Fitz was the last of the 2nd tier WR on my sheet, which included Marshall, Cobb, Julio Jones, and Andre Johnson.

3.10 Roddy White WR Atl

I looked over everybody here and it came down to Demarco Murray or Roddy White. There were a few other RBs out there, but all of them had big question marks in my mind. They certainly have the potential for the talent, but they have a big potential to bust as well so I went with the talent.

Last year Roddy White was phenomenal,200more yards than Jones, but a few less TD's. He finished as a top 10WR and is projected to finish ahead of some WR already taken. 1200 yd, 8TD for Roddy this year seems reasonable and is a nice anchor for my WR corps.

Pick 4.03: Danny Amendola, NE, WR
I have my 2 RBs. I have my QB. Time for WR. The run right after my previous pick really drained what I had lined up. I had kind of tagged Cobb or Vincent Jackson in this spot. After they went off the board I started to look at the TEs or IDP, but once Gronk was gone there was nothing I deemed 4th round value at those positions. So I put Amendola, Bowe and Wallace into my brain and decided to pull the trigger on Amendola.

I think he plays the Welker role better than Welker did last year as he may be a little faster. I think 1300 and double digit TDs are possible. The ceiling is pretty high on this pick I feel and at WR14 I think this is a good way to go.

4.04 Eddie Lacy, RB, GB

I was between QB and RB at this pick and felt QB had a better shot at falling to me in the 5th than the RBs I wanted. McFadden is the ADP pick here, but I just don't want to deal with his yearly injury and Oakland's awful team. Give me the guy who is hopefully getting the majority of the carries in a high powered Packers offense. I do fear I may get stuck with a QB I don't want after passing on them here and could repeat last year's awful QB play I had to endure.

Draft Position #2

To be honest, I really wouldn't of minded having position #5 or #6 as I did good in that position last year.

I searched and read the different slots and didn't see any big numbers that said any slot was better then another in 3RR/Bonzai. Maybe I didn't research hard enough?

In the end, hard to pass up Martin or AP.

3.05 Andre Johnson, WR, Houston Texans
woke up this morning, checked the draft status and saw that I was up. after getting a RB in round 1, the plan was to go RB-WR in the next 2 rounds. looking at the talent available WR was to way to go. It was either Roddy White or Andre Johnson. some of you would have stayed away from Johnson if they also had Foster. I strongly considered Roddy White because of this but in the end I could not pull the trigger. The 100+ yard performane by Johnson yesterday, in less than 2 quarters, sealed the deal.

4.05 Wes Welker, WR, Denver Broncos
Peyton Manning throws a lot every year. Wes Welker catches a lot every year. This year they will do this on the same team. This is a historic combo and I see a lot of passes thrown to Welker. Don't know how effective he will actually be, but I assume good enough to justify this draft pick.

When I started researching this pick I also investigated Amendola, but when I wanted to put him as #2 into my queue he was already drafted and I was up. there were not other WRs I looked into at this point. Available QB's, TE's or IDP's are not worth the early pick compared to the depth at their position and I already have 2 RB's. Will be interesting to see in which direction I go with my next pick.

4.06 Dwayne Bowe, WR, KCC

Bowe is getting older and has never really put up elite numbers, but Andy Reid likes to chuck it around, so he should be a solid if unspectacular WR2. I am concerned that his new QB may not be a good fit for his role / skills, but I don't think they are going to have much choice but to try to throw it to Bowe.

I considered Antonio Brown here, thinking Brown's punt return yardage gave him more upside than Bowe, but I thought Bowe's floor was higher. I liked Pierre Garcon, but thought it was too early for him and he might make it back (he didn't).

Only RB I felt comfortable with here was Eddie Lacy. He went a few picks earlier. Run DMc was still available but his history scared me. I felt there was more upside talent available in round 4 and hoped DMC would scare the turn away and I could grab him 5. That'll be next write up. Looking over everybody else, I just felt Nicks had the most upside. I expect a season closer to 2011 than 2012. 1000+ yrds and 7 or 8 TDs.

Based upon talent alone, he should have been a 1st rounder, however, with his injury concerns and how potentially woeful his team’s offence projects to be he has to slide. He was under consideration for my last pick as well, however, I went with a player I considered more reliable. I was also considering Lacy with this pick, but he went off the board at the beginning of the round.

5.11 Russell Wilson, QB, SEA

Wow. I really thought I did myself in by taking Lacy in the 4th round. For whatever reason I thought I was picking again at 5.04 instead of 5.11 and knew I'd be ok at QB just not get my top choice. Instead I sweated this the entire time after picking and realizing I probably wouldn't get one of the top 12 QBs. Even still, I'm not that high on Wilson and he seems to be the most likely to not live up to his preseason rankings and projections and could easily be outproduced by a few guys that will go behind him. I probably should have just taken a QB instead of waiting on them because I couldn't decide which one to go with in the 4th. That said, this also could work out great if Wilson does put up solid numbers again.

5.03 Reggie Wayne, WR, IND
My 2nd 10+ year veteran… so we definitely know how high he can go (and his ADP reflects that) however, the age concern leads to questions about after the catch ability. He’s more of a WR2 than a WR1, but he’s also the 21st WR off the board. He’s had a great preseason so far, so his chemistry with Luck seems fine. Guru “may” have gotten the better option in Indy with T.Hilton and the next pick, but I wasn’t willing to “reach” yet.

5.12 Austin, Tavon STL WR
Well you get no where in these leagues if you don't take a risk. I took a risk at RB. Ok I probably took 2 risks at RB. I think this could be a big boom or bust pick. I like that he returns punts so I should get some points from that each week, but he's a WR2 on his own team. I said the same thing last season in the rationales when selecting him, but I think *UNDRAFTED RAMS QB* could have a pretty solid season and someone's got to catch the ball. Why can't he play the Amendola role?

6.03 Peterson, Patrick ARI CB
This is the safest pick I've made since 1.12. Peterson is working with the offense and Arians is comparing him to Deion Sanders. He had 7 INTs and 50 tackles last season to go along with ~500 PR yards. He had what some would consider a down year compared to his rookie year and he was still the #4 DB. If he adds 25 catches for 250 yards to his totals from last year and he gets a couple of his PR TDs back from his rookie year he could be the top scoring IDP. I expect big things out of Peterson, and double digit points per week out of the DB position is golden.

6.04 Vernon Davis, TE, SF

I might have gone DeSean Jackson here if he was available, but he was taken just before me. Instead I went with a TE over my 3rd WR since I know there will be good WR value yet to come and would hate to pass on it because I had my starters filled. Davis provides an opportunity to have a top 5 TE with good TD production if all goes well. He has to be featured in the 49ers offense this year. He's talented enough, hopefully he's used properly. Some may have went with Gonzalez here, but I'm avoiding him in case father time does finally get him this year. Good chance that doesn't happen because Gonzalez is just amazing, but Davis offers similar if not better upside so I had to go with him.

5.10 Jason Witten, TE, Dallas Cowboys
after RB-RB-WR-WR it was time to either go QB, TE or Watt. Watt was long gone, which is not unexpected. the QBs available aren't elite anymore, so I can pass and get 2 from the medium of the pack later.

1 pick before I was due, I filled my queue with 2 TE's: Jason Witten and Vernon Davis. I would be happy with any of them. Turned out this morning that Witten joined my team. I just can hope that his QB who was taken the pick before him is still able to throw the ball to him. I just expect similar production as the last few years: 1000yds and around 6 TD's. hopefully more TD's.

7.08 Paul Posluszny LB JAC

In keeping with the theme that "It's all about the points, folks", I choose the Poz with this pick. He is expected to score more points than the majority of the remaining WR, RB and TE, so why not. I now have 2 of the 8 drafted IDP. This strategy may come back to haunt me, but there are times when I feel a steady IDP is better than a hot/cold backup RB. Time will tell.

8.08 Zach Sudfeld TE NEP

OK so I decided to drift back to the offensive side of the ball. The six TE that I might have wanted were off the board, and while that is not time to panic, you do need one! I decided to pounce on a potentially good one rather than wait for a dreck one. I have Zach in G24 and fully expect Brady to teach the kid how to play the game. He has a low ranking among TE, but see him as a sleeper getting lots of touches given the receiving corps troubles the pats have. He is big and strong and we know how the other NEP TE are working out so far... I decided I would rather have him on potential than a higher ranked guy who has not done much so far in his career.

5.05 Jordy Nelson WR GB

My quest for another RB continues to fall short. Looking ahead I am 1 of only 2 people w/out a 2nd running back so the pressure is off a little. I have a few picks but my top is probably Bernard Giovanni and if he doesn't fall to the next pick I have 1 or 2 others. So I decided, again, to look elsewhere. Looking over all the WR I see Jordy Nelson who should be healthy this year and is a main target for one of the top producing QB's in fantasyland. Is he the 1200 yd received of 2011? No. But he's far better than the 700yd receiver of last year. This gives me a top 5 QB, a top 5 RB and what may be one of the more solid receiving corps in the league.

Another “safe” pick at the WR position since I’m targeting my 2nd one here so late (or so it feels). This is my 2nd starter from the Bills… here’s hoping the rookie QB situation doesn't prove too terrible for this offense.

5.09 Tony Romo, QB, DAL

My plan was to wait longer at QB, but Romo was pretty much the last of the guys I would feel comfortable starting the majority of weeks. I wouldn't have minded Russell Wilson either, but there were 3 guys sans QB with 2 picks each before my next pick, so that forced my hand a bit.

For all of his high-profile screw-ups, Romo puts up pretty good numbers and plays in a pass-heavy offense with some good weapons. I think the NFC East has some of the worst secondaries in the league, so that should lead to at least 6 "plus matchups" on his schedule.

I also considered DeSean Jackson and Patrick Peterson, but figured (incorrectly) that one of them would make it back to me.

6.06 Tony Gonzalez, TE, ATL

This is Gonzo's final year in the NFL, and I think he will be motivated to end on a high note. He has been very consistent over his hall of fame career, and he remains a key part of a high powered offense. When I look past the top 5 TEs (Graham, Gronk, Witten, V Davis, and Gonzo), I don't see anyone that I want to start every week. So I thought this was a reasonable place to fill the TE position. Giovani Bernard and Shane Vereen were tempting, but I decided to go with an every-week starter rather than what would hopefully be a guy who only starts for me twice.

I had REALLY hoped that Vereen would make it back to me after the turn, but no such luck. Instead, I find myself with a very “unsexy” pick, but a clear starter nonetheless. As the 33rd RB off the board, I can’t really complain. I targeted RB here, and wasn't comfortable enough with the options available at WR/DE to take one now. I do plan on targeting them for my upcoming picks.

6.10 Daryl Washington, LB Ari
His nine sacks led all ILBs in 2012 and were the most for an NFL ILB since 2006. Joined another guy not yet drafted as the only two defenders in the NFL with at least 14 sacks and three INTs over the last two seasons. In his second NFL season, led the Cardinals with 111 tackles

And then after looking him up and missing some news at the bottom of 2 pages I see an "S" next to his name. Now, I'm a superhero nerd, but my immediate thought was NOT that this guy was Superman. He was one of the highest scoring LB's last season. And this year it looks like he's going to miss 1/4 of the season w/ a suspension for substance abuse (appeal pending). Foot meet teeth. 75% of a season - not what you want out of a round 6 pick.

The law firm has served me well in past seasons but he's looking at a probable platoon this season. Of course waiting until round 7 to get my 2nd RB what can I expect? So many RB's have been taken, I think a few HS seniors got picked up by people trying to take some fliers. At this point it was a calculated risk that backfired.
Looking at round 6 I wanted a RB, but only had 8 picks until my next pick. Looking over the roster every team picking before it came back to me had 2 RB's already and this early, there are still holes everybody needs to fill. I had 3 RB I was eyeing. It seemed unlikely any of them would be taken - phew, safe to fill a different hole here and grab a RB early R7. Out of the 8 picks - 6 were running backs, including all 3 I was eyeing. Twilson and promize taking 2 each really surprised me but Mendenhall was my main target for R7.

3.08 Vincent Jackson, WR, TB
After drafting a RB and QB in first two rounds, I was looking for a WR or 2nd RB. No RB stood out although I briefly considered Demarco Murray. I was hoping to pick Fitzgerald as I feel his numbers will be much better with a competent starting QB, but he was picked at 3.08. Jackson is a big play receiver who was the 8th ranked fantasy WR last season, and is the 11th WR chosen in our draft. I expect Jackson's stats to improve slightly in his 2nd season in TB working with QB Josh Freeman.

7.11 Navorro Bowman, LB, SF

I wanted to go RB/WR with this and my next pick around the turn, but there just aren't any RBs I feel are worth taking at this point. Bernard Pierce would be the obvious choice, owning Rice, but I'd rather fill a starting slot than grab a handcuff. WR was hard to choose from so I figured I'd let it slide to the next round and see if any go in the mean time. I considered a DE here, felt I can get about equal DE value with a later pick as I would grabbing one of the other top guys here. That leaves me with LBs and while I'm really not excited about getting one this early I don't mind locking up what should be a stud LB after having a pretty mediocre set last year. If I didn't take Bowman here he'd be scooped up by someone else pretty quickly.

I am still 1 of 2 teams without a QB. I see 2 QB's at this point that I am interested in: Eli Manning and Michael Vick. would prefer Eli. with Holt remaining to pick a starting QB I thought that I can pass at least for this round and still get one of these two.

since my other starting offense slots are filled I turned to the other side of the ball. Bobby Wagner seems to be the best LB available at this point. there were some other LB's in my queue as well, that may get considered with my next pick.

6.05 James Jones, WR, Green Bay Packers
after being away all day I went back online to see that I was up for a few minutes. looking at the picks since my last pick I saw not too many players I also remembered from researching last night for my 5th pick. this was ok to see until I saw the pick before mine. Vernon Davis was gone. damn Bonka. The RIFC rules allow us to play 2 TE's and I would have done that had I gotten Vernon Davis too. Reports say that he has better chemistry with Kaepernick and that can only lead to a better season than the last one, which wasn't that bad either. He has the potential of outscoring Jason Witten.

so I had to take a 3rd RB or a 3rd WR. It was a relatively easy decision because all available starting RB's are not expected to start for too long until they get benched or replaced with the currently injured guy. I also don't like picking bench players this early. on the WR side James Jones shined enough to get my attentation. He shines even more because of his QB and the status of the receiving partners in Green Bay. Jennings is gone, Cobb was limited in pre-season and Nelson is out as well. This should get him lots of yards early on. and on top of that he is expected to reach double digit TD's again this year.

9.07. Anquan Boldin WR SF

I needed a WR3 to complete a starting lineup. While he was the hero of the Super Bowl, I think he has found a better landing spot in SF. I am surprised to see him ranked so low (30's). He will be the SF WR1 now that Crabtree is out. There are concerns that he is getting old(er) and will struggle to stay sharp all season. I sure hope not. In retrospect I probably should have taken (xxx) but will try for him soonest to have a fourth WR on my team.

7.12 Smith, Aldon SFO LB
It's time for me to get some IDP as I feel they are vastly underrated in this league, even with top players going in the top 5.

Smith has averaged nearly 17 sacks a season in his career. He also had 50 solo tackles, 3 FFs and an INT last year. He's a beast, along with his San Fran LB corps, he'll continue to have huge seasons. For the 7th LB off the board I don't think you can beat his production.

8.03 Johnson, Derrick KCC LB
More IDP. More LBs. MORE EVERYTHING!!!

Speaking of more how can you ask for more when you average 107 tackles over the last 2 seasons. Throw in 2 sacks, 6 PDs, 2 FFs and you've got yourself a boat load of points. He's also on a team with an offense that will be on and off the field quickly (Thanks to Andy Reid's lack of Time of Possession offenses), and a defense that will probably be playing from behind a lot (lots of runs, lots of tackle opportunities). That's a reciepe for lots of IDP fantasy points!

Alright, let's try this again Britt. I drafted you last year at 6.14 and you weren't very useful. Looks like you've got some knee swelling and have checkered past with injuries. But you're also in a contract year and have the physical ability to dominate games. That's exactly what I want in a WR3 when I have two guys who should be consistent producers already. If I didn't have Dez, I might have gone with Miles Austin here instead and also considered Josh Gordon.

10.08 Kenbrell Thompkins WR NEP

This is the xxx I referenced in my 9.07 pick. I am so excited he fell back to me. He adds nicely to my WR corps and there are no bye week conflicts -- which is always helpful. I think that Brady will make a super stud outta this kid. He has to develop some consistent receivers besides Amendola and I have two of them: Sudfeld and Thompkins, and it is quite OK if they steal touches from Danny boy! He may be slow in stats to start the season but I do expect him to be targeted often by the 3/4th game.

as expected Holt picked a QB (Vick), so it was time to get Eli. But I then thought with all teams already having a QB there is no rush to pick one now. I will wait until round 9 to get Eli.

unexpectedly all the other LB's from my round 7 queue went within the last few picks. I seriously considered getting Wake here but could not pull the trigger. LB's still get a lot more points than available DL's at this point, so I picked a LB again.

David is in his 2nd year and if he improves from last year he will be outstanding for my team.

7.09 Ben Tate, RB, HOU

At this point, the remaining RBs pretty much all need an injury or benching to become fantasy relevant. I thought Tate had the best chance to score 6-7 pts a week in an understudy role, given that the Texans should try to manage Foster's workload a little better. That's good bye-week filler for TRich and Sproles. If Foster gets hurt (which seems to be the consensus among those of us who drafted in the 2-9 slots), I think Tate becomes a top-15 back. Seems like reasonable value for Rd 7.

I did consider a LB here, but figured I'd get one in the next round because there were 6-8 of them that I thought were very similar in expected production.

I'm not going to pretend to know a lot about the defensive side of the ball. I usually compare a few projection sites and look at last year's point leaders on our site. Maybe read a few articles on IDP sleepers and breakout guys.

Jackson averaged 9 pts a game in 2012, and over 11 in 2011. If he can split the difference, I think 10 pts a game is pretty good for round 8.

Looking for a WR or TE with this pick. Really wanted James Jones or Tony Gonzalez but they went earlier this round. Jennings will be the #1 WR for the Vikings. Before an injury plagued 2012, Jennings was one of the leagues top receivers playing for the Packers. Even though Jennings is now healthy and only turning 30 this season, I don't expect his production to match what he did with the Packers because of his QB. I expect about 1000 yds and 8 TDs.

9.10 Morgan Burnett, DB, Green Bay Packers
this draft gets a little bit frustrating. I knew who I wanted to pick 19 picks ago and wait and wait until it is finally my time again only to see this is the case because Eli went with the last possible pick before mine. damn! I am screwed at QB and need to change my strategy. haven't looked at any other QB and it is too early to pick one now. I better take some IDP'ler now and use the time until I am up again to research the QB situation.

speaking of IDP's. LB's are still the better value here, but I don't want to get stuck with my 3 starters this early. there is always some unexpected value left later. So I looked at DL and DB and decided that DB is the better value for this pick. The top tackler there is Morgan Burnett and this is plain simple why he is on my team. he was no turnover machine the last 3 years and he still put up the most points there so there is room for improvement from last years numbers. I don't count on that but will take that bonus anytime.

I actually wanted Vick Ballard here and thought I was drafting him. I must have scrolled without realizing it because next thing you know, Brown is on my team. And I can't say I'm upset about it. I’d been staring down the beginning of the 9th round for my 3rd WR for several rounds. A two game suspension isn't a huge deal, especially since there aren't any bye weeks yet, and Gordon looks to be THE top offensive weapon beyond T-Rich in this offense. He’s got all the makings for great every week start, or a great cover for bye weeks. I also considered here... (see my next rationale)

While reading through the rationals thread… OMG! COUGH! GASP! What did Guru just do with 7.04?!! I guess that’s the danger in drafting in multiple leagues that start on the same day. We eventually assume that one follows suit with the other. In any case, since Guru picks RIGHT before me, I didn't feel like pointing out the indiscretion, since obviously he would have been within his rights to fix that. I had also been considering him with my last pick, which seemed so long ago now, but I knew in taking Gordon that I’d have to grab another WR to cover the first couple weeks at the very least. For those keeping track, he ranked 20th WR, and 97th overall in this format last year, as a WR3… while the Ravens also ran a TON 2-TE sets. I’m not saying to expect the same this year, but this format supports players like him well.

Wilson will throw the ball more often this year as evidence by the end of the season. Someone's got to catch it, so why not the best thief in the NFL?

10.03 Ballard, Vick IND RB
Ugh... Rule #1 of Fantasy Football drafts for Kyle: Do not draft Indianapolis Colts. Rule #2 of Fantasy Football drafts, DO NOT DRAFT INDIANAPOLIS COLTS. This is so I can watch the games and be untainted by fantasy implications. I drafted Addai a few years back and struggled to watch games when someone besides Joe would score. This is how I seperate fantasy from my unabashed Colts fan.

That said, there's way too much value in Ballard to continue to let him sit. I know the Colts signed Bradshaw in the offseason and they have *UNDRAFTED FORMER FIRST ROUND BUST* still on the roster, but I think Ballard sees the lionshare of the carries. Pep Hamilton has preached a "Power Running" game all offseason and Ballard fits that role better than Bradshaw. And he's a back up RB for my team, so maybe one week I'll have some trepidation watching my boys in the horseshoe.

10.05 Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Pittsburgh Steelers
after my failure to get one of the "better" QB's I finally correct that issue by picking Big Ben. If he plays a full season he should be up there with a lot of other QB's drafted ahead of him. It just seems that about every projection out there sees him missing some games. until that happens I hope that he throws for 3500 yards and 25 TD's which would mean that he is healthy for the 13 regular season games. hopefully until then I got a 2nd QB that plays as good as Big Ben and replaces him for the fantasy playoffs.

11.08 Mark Barron DB TB

This kid had a great rookie season with 98 points, but he is expected to have an even better season. He is considered one of the top five DB. Word is that he will "crowd the line" so his tackles are expected to rise dramatically possibly leading to a nice 130 point total.

10.10 Charles Tillman, CB Chi

Hitting up some more consistent, high point IDP's. Peanut, year in and year out, is one of the best CB's out there. He projects similar numbers to last year which is fine with me as he was t he highest scoring CB least year by 15 points. And thats even with him goose egging in week 1.

11.05 Matt Schaub QB, Hou

They run a lot with Arian Foster, but this is my back up QB. Unfortunately, Cam's bye week (4) means I'll be starting a QB against Sea defense, but at least its a home start. I considered just about every QB taken in the picks following mine. Seemed a coin toss. In the end, I liked that he had Andre Johnson to pass to.

12.07 Danny Woodhead RB SD

I cannot believe this pick. It was a mistake somehow. I think it happened because I am bouncing around MFL like a lot of us in RIFC, G24 and GR14. He is not even the #1 or 2 RB on his own crummy team which has to throw the ball to even have a chance to win. He'll be lucky to get more season points than the IDP's I have so far. I am SO BUMMED. What a waste, aaaghhhhh!

2.14 Brandon Marshall CHI WR
As my pick approached, it seemed likely that WR would offer the best value, with Jimmy Graham as another top option had he continued to drop. I felt that the relevant RB tier had been pretty much exhausted, and I liked my chances of getting good value at QB later on. I would’ve taken Graham or Demaryius Thomas had they not been taken immediately prior to my pick. Among those remaining, Brandon Marshall, Julio Jones, Randall Cobb, and Larry Fitzgerald were considerations. If he continues as Green Bay’s primary punt returner, Cobb is primed for a huge season, but his bicep issues made me shy away and take his division rival. I think Marshall has the highest floor of the group with enough of a ceiling to make that matter. Of course, he now has his own health concerns of his own, so we’ll see how it goes.

3.14 Lamar Miller MIA RB
The difficult decision for me at this pick was whether or not to take a RB. I felt that Gronkowski offered excellent value at this slot, especially since the injury tea leaves had been trending toward ‘No’ for PUP. I think this will be the best value proposition I face at TE throughout the entire draft. With that said, I wasn’t all-out sold on Gronk that I was willing to take him regardless of the consequences, and I made the call that I was uncomfortable waiting any longer to fill my RB2 slot despite my success with that strategy last year. Among the RBs, I saw a big drop off after Miller, Lacy, and McFadden. Lacy was extremely tempting, but I decided that Miller offered a better, more stable situation. Miami has had a much stronger track record of late in producing fantasy starter-worthy RBs, enough to counteract Lacy’s higher ceiling in my mind.

4.14 Antonio Brown PIT WR
5.01 Robert Griffin III WAS QB

I would’ve taken McFadden here had he continued dropping, though I remain extremely skeptical of the Oakland offense and O-line. As for the guys I did take, Antonio Brown is stepping into Pittsburgh’s #1 WR role while retaining his punt return duties. Any time I can get a returner near his standard draft ADP I’m a happy camper. He was the 29th best WR in our format last year despite a significant underperformance of expectations, so I’m hoping his expanded offensive role will push him back toward his numbers from 2011 when he finished 6th amongst his brethren. TY Hilton was also a consideration, but I liked Brown better. I was hoping Hilton might drop to my next set of picks, but it was not meant to be.

A second WR in hand, I looked to QB for my next selection. No IDPs seemed worthy of being taken yet, and going WR/WR seemed unnecessary. Also, I expected the three remaining top 12 QBs to all leave the board before my next pair of selections. Among that group, I preferred Griffin and Russell Wilson to Romo. After weighing the pros and cons, I went with RGIII due to a perceived higher upside, though I am a big fan of both players. I owned RGIII in AAA#1 last year, so I know his strengths and weaknesses well. That he is just returning from major knee surgery is concerning, but his work ethic and Olympic-level athleticism pre-injury made me comfortable enough to pick him here. Plus, I expect that I’ll end up with Russell in at least one of my other leagues, which would soften the blow if Griffin does not perform to expectations.

11.12 Bennett, Martellus CHI TE
Jay Cutler is going to throw the ball 500 times or more. If he throws the ball 200 times to Brandon Marshall and 100 times to the sideline because he has DEs all over him, that leaves 200 throws to go to other players. *UNDRAFTED SECOND YEAR PLAYER* will see quite a few throws but I think Martysaurus Rex will get 60-70 catches. And with Marshall getting a little headcase-y about his hip surgery from the off-season, then Bennett sees only more throws.

11.11 Jay Cutler, QB, CHI

So many needs at this point in the draft it's really difficult to grab backups, but a solid QB backup definitely puts your mind at ease if you're not completely confident in your starter. Cutler should be at least spot startable if needed. Hopefully the mini QB run continues since the number of QBs most people would be comfortable drafting is getting really low.

11.10 Philip Rivers, QB, San Diego Chargers
since drafting my "starting" QB in the last round a few more QB's went. I was the last one to get one, so it is only logical that I pick a 2nd one earlier than others. It turned out that other managers with elite QB's are already drafting their backups too. do they have no trust in their star?

I decided on getting Rivers this morning when Schaub and Flacco were still available. I believe that Rivers is the superior option. He has some good receivers and is capable of throwing for over 4000 yards, which Flacco never achieved. He may get more interceptions than others, but that is the reason why he was not picked a few rounds earlier.

with this pick I have my offense basically sealed up. I will try to pick some defenders first until I turn to RB/WR again. unless I see value I can't pass or the draft situation forces it.

I had only chosen 1 IDP so far, so I thought it time to draft another. I don't see much advantage in picking IDPs early because there numbers are too difficult for me to pick. But I don't want to wait till the end of the draft and get fantasy waiver type players either. Weddle had the 5th highest fantasy points among DBs last season. He is 28 years old and consistently produced good numbers throughout his career.

13.08. Roy Helu RB WASH

Well, I honestly hope that Roy never sees the field for my team, because it will mean that something bad happened to Alfred. However, word today is that he won the back up/#2 role. Good for him, but I still hope I do not have to use him. Still feeling like I am a round behind where I want to be because of my round 12 boo boo. However, there just might be a tiny light at the end of the tunnel as I am beginning to read that SD plans to use Woodie the way NOLA uses Sproles. That would be nice, but Rivers is no Brees so I am not overly hopeful about that. Woodie is not that bad, he just shouldn't be drafted so high! Ugh!

12.05 Bilal Powell, RB, New York Jets
the only DL I considered here was Mario Williams who went 1 pick too early. again!
I thought about a 2nd DB but saw nobody interesting for this draft value. so it was either RB or WR. I have a few sleepers at WR so I looked at which RB has good potential to get a significant number of snaps or could even be the starter when my top 2 RB's are on bye. Bilal Powell fits the bill. Ivory was injured in the pre-season and Powell may take advantage of that. Ivory is not proven either because he had not many touches the last 2 years. he had less touches in the last 2 years than Powell had last year. In the end nobody knows how much playing time Powell will receive.

Still threw down a near top 20 season in 2012 and as the primary target on an improving Panthers team expect a better year in 2013. Great value here.

6.09 Cecil Shorts, WR, Jac

Last season he was the third-most consistent receiver percentage-wise in fantasy. The Jaguars' passers are going to target Shorts over and over this season just as they did when he averaged 9.5 targets per game in his final nine. I'm comfortable with him as my WR/TE.

7.06 Andre Brown, RB, NYG

The Giants has used multiple backs last season. Brown managed to score eight times from short distance anf he should continue get the bulk of the goal line carries.

I needed a back up for Peyton and was one of the last teams to select a back up and am very surprised he survived no me as I sweated out this pick. He is our # 25 QB selected. In the other two AAA he went at #17. I like his Peyton bye week matchup vs the Bills. 10.06 Emmanuel Sanders, WR, PIT

With a lack of backfield options, I think the Steelers are going to be forced to throw more this year than they have in the past. Mike Wallace took his talents to South Beach, which should also create some more targets for Sanders. He is listed as the primary kick returner on the depth chart, so maybe some return yardage becomes a bonus, but I'm not sure he needs any to justify a 10th round pick in a 14 team league.

I don't know much about this guy, but apparently he has "size and speed" (always a good combo for a WR, I suppose) and will be starting opposite Fitzgerald. His name seems to appear on a lot of sleeper lists. I honestly forgot Fitzgerald is also on my team, so I am not sure how that will play out. Maybe if Floyd breaks out, Larry will get less double-coverage, and they will both have good years.

Simply continuing to build my roster with starters over bench players. Last season I ran 3 LB nearly every week as they seem to be the higher scorers out of the IDPs. He was the 18th overall highest scoring LB last season and projects pretty similar this year. Out of the LB's that were left, he was one of the better ones that is not starting the season with a suspension.

I really wanted Greg Olsen as my TE but Guru snagged him a few picks before I was hoping to get him. When he went I changed directions to RB, but that got screwed up too. Anyway, as far as this pick goes, there werent many TE's left I liked, but I do think Myers outperforms this draft slot (#173). Projected for 700+yrds and 4 TDs I expect about that yardage but holding out hope for 6-7 td's. One every other game. Eli has passed TE's a lot before.

Oakland has to have some offense right? Moore had 700 yards and 7 TDs last year. If he can up that some he'll be a viable #3 WR. If he stays consistent from last year then he should be a decent bye week fill in. For the 52nd WR taken off the board 8 points a week would be a nice pick.

Normally I avoid cowgirls just on principle but the word on this guy as a sleeper was just too strong to ignore. Although I think it may be a bit early to get him, depending upon who else is reading the same stuff I am. He is the current RB2 for Dallas, and with the injury/fumble history of Murray, I am hoping that Lance gets some good carries, if I need him to help out. Right now he is just a back up for me. I now have five RB all with different byes except for Helu who is my handcuff (and a good one) for Morris. I think that should be plenty.

Mayo has over 95 tackles in all five seasons in the NFL, and he should once again anchor the New England defense in 2013.

9.06 Owen Daniels, TE, Hou

Daniels comes into 2013 have just finished the most productive fantasy season of his career. His success came largely because of improved performance around the endzone. He has led the team in red zone targets in each of the past two seasons.

10.09 Harrison Smith, DB, Min

Harrison Smith finished his rookie year as the team's second-best tackler with 103 total.Looks like Smith is going to be Minnesota for a long time and more numbers should be expected going forward.

11.06 Greg Hardy, DL, Car

He said his personal goal is to record 50 sacks this season. This is a bombastic prediction but he will be increasingly productive.

12.09 Bruce Carter, LB, Dal

He's expected to move to the weakside linebacker spot in the Cowboys 4-3 defense. That should open him up for some pretty good numbers as weakside linebackers typically do well in Kiffin’s defense.

13.10 Joique Bell, RB, Detroit Lions
similar to QB's where a lot of teams already have drafted their #2, the same is now happening for RB's. I better get a 2nd backup that has the potential of seeing significant time during the season. Bell had 899 total yards last year, evenly split between rushing and receiving. I expect something similar this year. If Reggie Bush is not his old self Bell will be there to take advantage of that. having Stafford at QB isn't bad either.
lets see how often I am forced to play him. In a perfect world he will sit on my bench all season, not because he does not score, but because my other 3 RB's are scoring more.

I finally wanted to turn to the defensive side again. there are still lots of LB's and DB's out there, but since we start at least 2 DL I better grab at least 1 now so that I don't need to pick some up every week. I am not good at picking DL because their weekly performance is hard to project.

Chandler Jones might be a steady force for my team. Playing in New England and being the core of their defensive line should amount in a lot of plays. hopefully he is making the most of them. if he plays as good as last season it would be a great start.

This is a true Hail Mary pick, but why not. He could be a bust or he could be awesome. Word out of AZ is that he has been a model combatant and is working his butt off to prove himself. Perhaps the year away from football made him grow up? One assessment: FF Today's Take: Mattieu has made his impression while learning four positions: outside corner, slot corner, safety and special teamer. He is high risk, high reward. With Washington out for a few weeks someone's got to step up and get those tackles, why can't it be Dansby? He had 100 tackles last year. He should get 100 tackles this year. If he does and throws in some peripherial stats my IDP flex should be filled by him regularly.

16.03 Manning, Danieal HOU S
Kind of rediculous, I had Dansby and Burfict lined up in my round 15 pick, then I had Branch and Manning lined up in my round 16 queue. I think Holt hacked my cheatsheets.

Manning has had 2 solid seasons since moving to Houston 2 years ago. He should have little competition in the secondary for tackles since he's got a rookie 2nd round pick at FS and he's backed up by an injured undrafted FA. Should be about 70 tackles, 5-6 PDs, 2-3 INTs, and possibly a sack. That'll be good for a DB2.

6.14 DeAngelo Williams CAR RB
7.01 Shane Vereen NE RB

Looking at the available options here, we were rapidly approaching a cliff at RB, and I had little interest in most of the guys after that drop. With the continuing troubles of his backfield mate, DeAngelo Williams has his best opportunity in years. Hopefully he takes advantage as I think he can.

My selection of Vereen was much more of a question mark. I was also very tempted to take a TE before that position dried up even further, with Finley, Olsen, and Cook of particular interest. Ultimately, I decided that the drop to the next tier was shallow enough points wise that I was willing to take the hit. An elite LB was also a consideration, but I felt that it was a bit early for that. Thus, I made a luxury pick and grabbed a fourth RB. I don’t know that I’m tremendously optimistic about his potential, but enough people that I trust feel differently that I took a chance on him. Hopefully enough of my RBs pan out that I can flip one for a position of need as the season gets going.

8.14 Jermichael Finley GB TE
9.01 Demarcus Ware DAL DL

I was a bit surprised at the massive LB run that preceded this pair of picks. I had been expecting to grab one here, but it just doesn’t seem like a value proposition anymore. However, it resulted in one of my TE targets from the last round still being on the board, so I can’t really complain. Finley is a lot less likely to underperform the expectations of pick #112 than #85. The news reports have been very positive this offseason, which I hope (and expect) will result in an actual production increase.

No need yet for a backup QB, so I focused on WR and IDP in the 9th round. The top receivers available were all guys who do returns. I figured at least one would still be around come 10.14, with Jacoby Jones the expected choice. Thus, I felt free to get started on my defensive lineup. As previously mentioned, I didn’t see value at LB, so I decided to take a top DL. Demarcus Ware’s stellar track record and recent positive press made me think that his reclassification to DL from LB will not meaningfully hurt his stats. Other names I considered were Jared Allen and Jason Pierre-Paul, but their offseason injuries proved the difference in my mind.

10.14 Lance Moore NO WR
11.01 London Fletcher WAS LB

Quite disappointed to miss out on Jacoby Jones, but such is life. Would’ve also been happy with Chris Givens or Emmanuel Sanders. With that group gone, nobody really stood out to me at any position, so I grabbed players at my positions of greatest need. WR was between the steady production of Moore and the upside of Cordarrelle Patterson. Since I was drafting my WR3 instead of a backup, I went with the safer name.

London Fletcher may be old, but his fantasy performance in the last two years has remained truly elite. Only four players were an LB1 both years, and the others were gone at least 40 picks ago. It’s obvious why he’s the laggard, but at this point I think the age risk is factored in. Plus, I think I can get at least one of the upside guys I’m looking at later on.

17.08 David Harris LB NYJ

Poor Harris plays on a team that has no offense, but this is a good thing for him and me. He will have a ton of opportunities to make plays. He averages about 100+ tackles/asst tackles per season with a few sacks, FF, FR tossed in for good measure. In Kuechly, Pos and Harris I think I have a pretty good set of tackling machines with no bye week conflicts to worry about.

Andre Brown out, I need another RB. Thomas is equally competent rushing and in the passing game and he is just an injury away from a bigger role in arguably the best offense in the NFL.

14.09 Bernard Pollard, DB, Ten

Pollard on the strong safety has top 10 IDP upside.

15.06 Mohamed Sanu, WR, Cin

Sanu enters 2013 opposite A.J. Green, which will give him all kinds of opportunities to exploit. He has huge upside in a developing offense.

Took Wright in the same round I did last year, interestingly enough. I could use some more WR depth and he also gives me some insurance if Britt were to get hurt. Wright should be productive in his own right, but the insurance on Britt makes this a little more valuable for me.

15.10 Michael Johnson, DL, Cincinnati Bengals
last year I missed that we need to start 2 DL each weak. this year I remembered that. I wanted an IDP with this pick. although there are better point produces at LB and DB still available, I believe that the number of DL players with regular output of 5 points is going near zero quickly. so I better grab one of these to not end up with one that is only getting 3.5 points. there not many such players left compared to LB and DB which is much deeper.

Michael Johnson should fit that bill. he is able to get double digit sacks. he is in a contract year and may prove all the teams out there, especially the Bengals, that he is worth more than he is currently earning. I hope this keeps him motivated to even play better than last year.

I thought about getting another RB backup here because there are still some #2's left. in the end I changed my mind to fill another open starting slot. this time DB because there are still a lot of LB's out there. There were a few DB's that I researched but in the end I choose Moore because of all the tackles. tackles are the primary source for a DB because you can't really predict turnovers. most get a few of them and only a few get more than that. Moore will only get a few, but will be among the leaders in tackles.

Ok, time to take a break from lottery tickets and sew up a backup spot. Gonzo is in his last year, so if he gets a concussion or some sort, I don't see him risking lifelong impacts just to play a few more games. Pettigrew is not exciting and will not single-handedly win you many games, but I feel confident that he's good for 5 or so points on any given week if you need him. That's all I really need at backup TE.

17.10 Dexter McCluster, WR/KR/PR, Kansas City Chiefs
I have 6 of 7 defensive starters already. I may draft 2 more but I think that can wait a bit. better drafting some more backups at positions that you won't get as plenty during the season: RB, WR and TE. I already have 2 backups at RB and I don't think that any of the remaining TE's will be significantly better than any TE available during the season. they are all crap and you need to get lucky to find a replacement for any given week.

WR gets thinner too. there are some WR2 on their team that have not fanatasy value and ther are some WR4 on their team that have. McCluster seems to be a WR3 with the addition of being the primary returner. This should get him a nice boost in case he does not see enough targets as a receiver.

I wanted another flex WR/TE here. Also would be nice to get a bye week replacement for my TE, Sudfeld. I did not trust any of the other WR/TE available to start on a regular basis. Here is the kicker though, Celek has been very active in the pre season, mostly as a check off guy for the QB's. He does not score much but he does move the chains. I do not trust Kelly to do this and then back off in season. He is hiding a lot of his play book but since Celek has been so prominent, is this a disguise -- or am I over thinking the whole thing because it is the near the end of the draft and I am tired?

This young pup enters his third season primed to improve upon his very nice sophomore season. He went from 1.9 ppg to 5.4 ppg improving both in tackles and sacks. I feel that SD will be spending a lot of time on defense so he should have the opportunity to add to those totals simply due to time on the field. One source commented: The versatile Liuget improved dramatically with more opportunities last season. He's my number one bet for an IDP surprise among young DL and will surprise as a possible Top 15 DL this season.. That works for me. Now I have the two DL I need.

18.07 Brandon Mebane DL SEA

As I looked over the DL choices, I decided to wait because after Watt, taken in round 3.02 the points fall off very quickly and basically you are left to the whims of any given game. For this reason, I looked to find tackle machines at LB and DB, in many cases instead of an offensive player. So my first DL is the 22nd DL off the board.

Mebane plays in a defense that will put pressure on the QB. The DB will cover the receivers and so the DL have this great chance to sack the QB. As a DT he can stuff the run as well.

18.05 Isaac Redman, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers
I have no idea why he was still out there. did not recognize this earlier. a starting RB available in round 18? WTF? ok, he may only start 3 or 4 games and in these starts he won't get a full workload, so he is basically a 1a and later in the season a 2a behind an unproven starter who is coming back from injury. he may have value all year or he may get dropped as soon as Dwyer shows that he is more effective this season. I better hope that Redman stays the starter and Bell takes longer than expected to recover.

note: Dwyer was surprisingly released a few hours after I picked Redman, so this pick looks even better when it comes to 1a vs. 1b, but it may also mean that Bell may be back earlier.

I haven't planned on picking a 2nd TE in this draft but Fleener was too much value to pass at this point. I still need some WR depth (some of my sleepers are still available) or IDP starters (also enough comparable ones available), but a starting tight end for a pass heavy offense could be gold, even if he is only the 2nd TE in all those 2 tight end sets the Colts are expected to run. he may have value every week and if all goes well I only have to play him in week 11.

I was happy of the value of this player (His ADP had him going about 3 rounds earlier), however, I’m breaking away from my draft plan significantly at this point. I was really hoping to be targeting LBs, but they keep flying off the board at a ridiculous rate (we can only start 3 of the people!). Luckily every year seems like there are plenty of start-able LBs available on the wire… I just might not end up with a true LB1.

He’s being talked up as a legitimate option/weapon in Washington, and considering out he came out of nowhere a few years back to steal the job from Cooley, I think his 1 year “prove it” contract, should be enough motivation, in a offence that currently has underwhelming options in the receiving core; IF he can stay healthy of course! There are still 9 rounds remaining correct? Plenty of time for those LBs that I keep passing on!

I need a backup LB, especially since I have 2 LBs who have byes in week 9. Suggs fits the bill. Make some tackles and a sack in weeks 9 and 10 and we won't have any problems. I think the Jacksonville D will be on the field a lot this year, giving Cyprien the opportunity to post good tackle numbers. He had a hamstring injury before training camp, but seems to be back to good health.

19.09 Lance Briggs, LB, CHI

Unbeknownst to me until the draft was over, my draft strategy apparently was to avoid anyone with 3-7 years of NFL experience. Briggs is 32 years old, and has posted 100+ tackles in 8 of his 10 NFL seasons, only missing 4 games during that time. With Urlacher gone, there may be a few additional tackles to go around. High floor, but low ceiling.

21.06 Markus Wheaton, WR, Pit

The Steelers are hurting at running back, but they should throw the ball a good amount. Wheaton has the skills to overtake Emmanuel Sanders in targets.

22.09 Steven Hauschka, PK, Sea

I like Hauschka because of the quantity of attempts he’ll get and the well-rounded offense that has his back.

23.06 Derek Wolfe, DL, Den

This was just because Avril is questionable.

24.09 Demario Davis, LB, NYJ

He is set to slide into an every-down role at WILB for a defense that will likely be on the field quite a bit this year.

20.06 Matt Prater, DEN, K

I know, I know. Don't draft a kicker until the last round. But I think it is important to draft a kicker who meets 3 criteria - (1) accurate, (2) ability to make 50+ yarders, and (3) has an offense that can move the ball. Prater is one of a handful of guys that I felt met those criteria, so I "reached" (if anyone is ever a reach in Rd 20) for him. I do think their is a chance that the RB mess in Denver might hurt their red-zone TD efficiency, which would also help Prater.

21.09 Jason Babin, DL, JAX

The 33 year old had 18 sacks in 2011, but 2012 was not good. He is going to play the "Leo" DE position in the Jags defense, which apparently is the primary pass rusher. We'll see if he has anything left in the tank. If not, my DL2 will just be DL-du jour.

22.06 Percy Harvin, WR, SEA

With as deep as our rosters are, I figured I would take a shot at rostering Harvin in hopes that he returns to the field around Thanksgiving and can get back to full speed in time for the fantasy playoffs. The Hawks should be in tough competition with the Niners for the NFC West title, forcing them to play all out through at least week 16. In hindsight, the 2 safeties I considered here (Quin and Bell) got drafted before I picked again, so I probably should have taken one of them instead.

23.09 Erin Henderson, LB, MIN

The mediocre stat projections I've seen for Henderson do not seem to match the glowing reviews I've seen. He is moving from the outside to the inside, and apparently "thriving" as the Mike. Seems like it would be a tackle heavy position. We'll put him on the roster and see what numbers he can put on the stat sheet.

24.06 Antoine Bethea, DB, IND

A two-time pro-bowler who has posted at least 70 solo tackles and played 16 games in each of the past 5 seasons. Weak in the "glory stats" though, and LaRon Landry joining the Colts secondary may take away some stats from Bethea. But as a Redskins fan, I know Landry can't stay healthy, so I am not worried. Another high floor-low ceiling guy.

From the small amount I’ve seen of Quin this preseason, he’s looked pretty good. I’m looking for a depth IDP Flex play in case one of my LBs/DBs don’t work out.

24.12 Lamarr Houston, DE, OAK
Looking at my team DL will need two bye week fill-ins prior to any other position, so I may as well grab a guy here. The Raiders deference will likely be spending a lot of time on the field this year, with tons of tackle opportunities.

Bess is a slot receiver who has had some success with the Dolphins. I expect he will be frequently used especially on 3rd downs in his first season with the Browns.

After missing his rookie season because of injury, Leshoure ran for 798 yards and 9 TDs last season. Although the Lions signed Reggie Bush, I expect Leshoure to have a role especially in short yardage and goal line situations.

21.10 T.J. Ward, DB, Cleveland Browns
after getting a 3rd LB it was also time to get a 3rd DB. I wanted someone with potential for lots of tackles and TJ Ward has proven that he is able to do so. because of injuries last year he played more in coverage and less against the run which saw his tackles total dip a lot. I expect that he will see a rise in tackles again. I doubt that he will come close to the 95 solo tackles he had in 2010 but if he gets near that he will likely be used more than for the 2 games where my current starters are on bye.

22.05 Santana Moss, WR, Washington Redskins
I targeted Jacoby Ford here but he went a few picks too early. wanted more depth with players where my others are not on bye. Santana Moss is such a player. When RG3 is healthy he is a good passer. WR on his team should benefit from that because he keeps defenders looking at him which opens more space for the receivers. Moss is the #3 guy and will probably see lots of such passess. I also saw some depth charts (incl. the Redskins official one) where he is listed as the teams punt returner. I don't know if that will happen or not but I'll take it if that is true.

23.10 Chris Ogbonnaya, RB, Cleveland Browns
with the latest cuts the Browns were down to 1 running back + Chris Ogbonnaya who they list as starting full back. unless Trent Richardson gets all the carries, Ogbonnaya should see a few of them too. he is also a good blocker and may become a favorable target in the passing game.

shortly after I made this pick the Browns added 2 young running backs. it needs to be seen who will see the most opportunities. I doubt that it will be Ogbonnaya but it was worth the gamble that I will probably take into week 1 to exchange him into a hot waiver pickup.

24.05 Mason Crosby, K, Green Bay Packers
we need to start a kicker. since their points largely depend on other factors, such as if the offense gets regularly stopped within 30 yards, I never draft a kicker before the last round.

I choose to get Crosby simply because the Packers will be often near the opposing endzone. it then does not matter much if the result is a FG or a PAT. I may hope for more FG's but will take 6 PAT's with no FG too.

19.13 Kenny Stills, NOS, WR

Stills is fast and has good hands. Brees spreads the ball around so maybe Stills will contribute as a rookie. As a Sooners fan, Stills was always a guy who seemed more interested in himself than the team, but as a fantasy owner, that is A-OK.

20.02 Matt Bryant, ATL, PK

A kicker in rd 20. I've taken a kicker in the last round of all the other drafts I've done this season, and maybe I was just tired of picking from the scraps. I'm not really sure. I had run out of must-have players so just went with a good kicker on a good offense. In hindsight, Andre Roberts might have been a decent pick here.

21.13 Alfonso Smith, ARI, RB

Smith appears to be #2, and there's no reason to expect Mendenhall to make it through the year unscathed. Hopefully I never need to consider starting Smith. M Wheaton may turn out to be a decent pick for sR in the 21st.

22.02 Jacoby Ford, OAK, WR

Catches some passes and returns kicks and punts for the Raiders. That's gonna be a lot of kick returns. Heck, he may end up being a weekly starter.

23.13 Aaron Dobson, NEP, WR

I don't mind having Dobson but this was supposed to be my 2nd DB. Somehow my queue order came out backwards. Now I'll have to spend $1 to pick up a DB for week 1. Dobson has some good athletic ability and a good QB. I'm not confident that he'll put up good numbers this season but everything in NE is weird. Worth a late rd pick.

24.02 Felix Jones, PIT, RB

Le 'Veon hurt, Dwyer cut, Redman stink. Felix may still be learning the playbook but he's a hell of a lot better runner than Redman. If Bell doesn't come back and perform well I'd put my money on Felix leading the team in rushing yards (and he's a pretty capable receiver as well).

24.07 Fletcher Cox DL PHL

Cox improved throughout the season to the point where Andy had to play him. Seemed to be the best IDP option and a 3rd DL for bye week. And, of course, a homer pick!!
I really wanted to give due diligence to Nick Moody SF LB who made their team and will be seen mostly on special teams. I taught him in 8th grade Science way back when. Bright kid, but stubborn. Hope he sticks.

21.12 Lewis, Marcedes JAC TE
Play well in week 8. Don't get hurt. Possibly fill in if Bennett gets hurt or the Bears play a very stingy D. That's your job buddy. Underperform and you're cut.

22.03 Bailey, Dan DAL PK
Hey guys, I drafted a kicker and it isn't round 24. This guy was 7th on my list and the 8th kicker off the board. Better than not having a kicker.

23.12 Woodson, Charles OAK S
This guy might be the first guy off my roster. Or he could be the stud of all studs. He's old, the defense will be on the field a lot and he still gets tackles and INTs. Before he got hurt last year he was having a pretty good season. Not bad for a 3rd DB and 9th IDP.

24.03 Lattimore, Marcus SFO RB
Ooops. This is what I get for drafting from my engagement party after the majority of the party had wrapped up and it turned into a bags and drinking festival.

21.14 Woods, Robert BUF WR

Shot in the dark here with this pick. I really do not like Woods a whole lot- but he could be there go to guy. This is like a lotto ticket- I do not expect it to pan out, but if it does I will be psyched.

22.01 Danard Robinson Jax RB

MJD coming off an injury that really hurt him last season. If he has the same time of injury this season Robinson could be a total steal. If not he didnt really hurt me with this spot.

23.14 Toby Gerhart Minn RB

Handcuffing AP-

24.01 Jon Abraham LB Ari

With Washington out I thought I had read that Abraham would be the new pass rushing threat. Now I am seeing in the depth chart he is a back up. I might have wasted this pick, but I guess we will see this week

12.14 Josh Freeman TB QB
13.01 Donald Butler SD LB

A few nice IDPs were taken in the interim between my picks. Perhaps I should’ve gone DL2 in the 11th instead of LB2, but what’s done is done. The options at backup QB are thinning out at this point, so I think it’s time to make that pick. Freeman may have questionable quarterbacking skills, but his fantasy performance has been nothing but solid over the past couple years. If he just manages to match recent history, he will be a value here. The only negative is that he shares a bye week with RGIII, so I may need to use a roster spot on a third-stringer. I also considered E.J. Manuel, but the uncertainty about his injury status for week 1 rendered him a no go on a team led by Griffin III.

I had Donald Butler pegged as a sleeper stud entering 2012, and he didn’t quite live up to expectations. Instead, he was more of a solid presence until hurting himself in the second half. I still think that upside remains, and he should have plenty of time on the field given the ever-weakening San Diego offense. I very nearly took Cordarrelle Patterson here after he survived two more rounds. He could really blow up in this format given his return prowess, but he doesn’t quite seem ready to take on a significant role in the offense. Maybe I’ll be kicking myself come season’s end for taking the steady LB over the dynamic WR, but it’s the move I felt was right in the moment.

14.14 Osi Umenyiora ATL DL
15.01 Von Miller DEN LB

The last of the really interesting WRs left the board with Bonka’s pick of Kerley at 14.04. Thus, my attention shifted elsewhere for the time being. Clay Matthews remained appealing, but now is too early for another LB at this level. I think I can get similar value much later, so better to invest in resources that will be gone soon. Not loving the RB/TE options, and I’m stocked up at QB, so that leaves DB and DL as options. I liked the look of the lineman best, and strongly considered a bunch of names. Peppers, Morgan, and Michael Johnson in particular. In the end, I thought Osi had the most appealing upside of the group.

It may be too early, but I am just such a fan of Von Miller as a football player and fantasy stud that I had to take him here. I think he’s a cut above the rest at LB on a per game basis, and I’m willing to wait through the suspension to have that on my team. It helps that he plays a position where I have confidence that I’ll get by just fine until he returns. The roster spot is more of a concern than finding another LB to play, but benches are deep enough in RIFC that I think I can handle it.

16.14 Devin McCourty NE DB
17.01 Malcom Floyd SD WR

It was amusing to see Devin’s twin go off the board immediately prior to my pick. I preferred Devin anyhow due to his kick return duties. He was the #2 scorer last year after a DB-worthy performance in 2011, so he’s certainly got a chance to produce for me. He’s switching positions from cornerback to free safety, which adds uncertainty to his projections. We shall see what kind of impact that has. I may have taken Tyvon Branch had he still been available here.

Malcom Floyd was Mr. Steady last year, putting up respectable but never exciting stats week after week. The return to health of Vincent Brown puts a damper on any optimism I might have, but it’s not like there are any other WRs on the board that excite me either. Dexter McCluster was a consideration, but the scuttlebutt is that he is unhappy with his role on the team and that he may lose some of his return duties to Knile Davis. That was enough to steer me back to Malcom.

18.14 Daniel Thomas MIA RB
19.01 Brandon Weeden CLE QB

Nothing standing out as obvious values, so I figured I would take care of some necessary roster fill-out. Though I’m fairly confident that Lamar Miller is the solid #1 in Miami, having Thomas handcuffs the chance that I’m wrong.

By taking two QBs with the same bye week, and an early one (5) at that, I felt it was safer to carry a QB3 on the roster than rely on the vagaries of the FA pool. I may change my mind if a good pickup presents itself, but for now 3 QBs it is. Weeden is in his second year, with a talented #1 WR also a rising sophomore. He has a nice matchup in the week I need him.

20.14 Rob Ninkovich NE DL
21.01 Andre Roberts ARI WR

I’m waiting on my third LB starter for now, as I have a value target later. No DB or PK stands out to me at this point, so I’ll just grab one of each last and call it a day. Though it seems unnecessary, I do still like a couple DL options, with Ninkovich leading the way. He was fairly productive last year, and the touts I consider him promising. With Osi no guarantee to return to form this year, I figure that in the lack of other interesting alternatives, Ninkovich is as good a pick as any here.

My WR corps still leaves a lot to be desired, so I decided to take another stab at the position in the 21st. Andre Roberts was borderline starter-worthy in 2012 with the total mess that Arizona had at QB. Michael Floyd will usurp some of Roberts’ targets this year, but it’s possible that a return to competence by the Cardinals offense makes up for it.

22.14 Justin Houston KC LB
23.01 Yeremiah Bell ARI DB

I’ve been targeting Houston as my LB3 for the latter third of the draft. He finished as the 29th best LB in this format last year, and I think he has the passrushing talent to step up his performance another notch. Young, talented, and cheap—an ideal late round pick.

Yeremiah Bell has put up respectable numbers before, though not last year. Hopefully he can do it again, at least until I find something better in the free agent pool.

24.14 Mike Nugent CIN PK

Needed a kicker. Among those still available, Nugent had the best combination of team offense and experience. Plus, he’s usually good for a missed XP each year, which keeps things entertaining.
