Tough opening night!
One of my favorite picks from the draft goes down (after getting run-over by his own teammate), and in one matchup, I get to face the record setting Peyton Manning.

The MFL servers seem pretty overwhelmed today. Hopefully it's not going to be like this every Sunday.

Sweet! My RIFC debut has a solid negative score from my second round pick... I'll be really happy with a 1-1 this week but I've only got Daniel Manning and 28 points going against RG3 and 2 LBs.

Gotta disagree Holt. I'd rather go 2-0. :)

And Kyle, join in my misery brother! Less than a point difference between us and both 0-2. And we didn't face any of the same opponents. Last year in AAA I figured 135 or so a week would be competitive and get into the playoffs. Doesn't look that way this year.

I just did some quick analysis on points.

Last year, the average pts/game for the RIFC regular season was 133. In last year's first week, the average was 136.

This year, the first week average was 150.74. That score is at the 79th percentile for last season. Four teams scored above 164; last year, only 17 scores exceeded 164 during the entire regular season (just under 10%). And Holt's score of 200.02 was only 0.44 below last year's top score.

Khahan: I agree, I'd rather get the wins, but right now we're both in the playoffs if the season ended today! ;)

The bright point in my loss: It's not all David Wilson's fault.

And so far my post draft look at if it was smart to draft Brees-Wilson vs. Forte-Peyton isn't looking like a positive.

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to make sure I do set up my waiver priority right.

Here's how I set up my waivers with fake players and fake dollar amounts.

I would like to add in order
1. Johnny Unitas for $35
2. Joe Montana for $30
3. Jim Brown for $25

I would like to drop in order
1. Dan Marino
2. Brett Favre
3. Tim Tebow

If I set it like this, should I be the high bidder on all 3, will I get all 3 players? And if I miss out on Unitas will I get Montana and Brown and drop Marino and Favre?
Add Bid Drop
Johnny Unitas $35 Dan Marino
Joe Montana $30 Dan Marino
Joe Montana $30 Brett Favre
Jim Brown $25 Dan Marino
Jim Brown $25 Brett Favre
Jim Brown $25 Tim Tebow

You would need to set them up in separate groups if you want a shot at all three. I think this would work:

Group 1
Johnny Unitas $35 Dan Marino

Group 2
Joe Montana $30 Dan Marino
Joe Montana $30 Brett Favre

Group 3
Jim Brown $25 Dan Marino
Jim Brown $25 Brett Favre
Jim Brown $25 Tim Tebow

I think there is another way to accomplish [16]

Group 1
Johnny Unitas $35 Dan Marino
Joe Montana $30 Dan Marino
Jim Brown $25 Dan Marino

Group 2
Joe Montana $30 Brett Favre
Jim Brown $25 Brett Favre

Group 3
Jim Brown $25 Tim Tebow

If you were the high bidder for all three, you'd still get all three. I think this setup might be preferable, however, because if you were not the highest bidder for Unitas, you would have your "group 1" claims for Marino & Brown evaluated sooner - since they were part of a higher bid group.

For sake of discussion, let's assume that the groups were set up as in [16].

Let's also assume that two other managers had the follow claim groups set up.

Manager 2, Group 1
add Johnny Unitas $45, drop Dan Marino

Manager 3, Group 1
add Johnny Unitas $40, drop Dan Marino
add Joe Montana $10, drop Dan Marino

Clearly, Manager 2 would get Unitas, with the top bid of $45.

But, would manager 3's group 1 be evaluated next (based on the second-highest top claim of $40)? And if so, would he get Montana for $10? Or, would the Unitas portion of the group 1 claim be ignored, since Unitas was not longer available? And therefore, Montana would go for $30 to the first manager.

I'm hoping it's the latter. But based on the help page, I'm not 100% sure.

Thanks Guru!

I'm going to try setting them up as 3 separate groups like [17]. As much as I love the blind bidding, for some reason MFL does them quite confusingly.

I really hope I'm able to win Johnny Unitas. Dan Marino just hasn't done what I expected him to do this year.

I sent a question to MFL about [20], and they responded that Montana would go for $30 (as intuitively expected), since all unsettled Unitas bids would be eliminated at that point, and have no lingering impact on claim group priorities.

So I think either [17] or [19] would work for your example. I'm still not sure if they are exactly equivalent in impact or not.

Haha. I certainly didn't expect to win all 3 players. Figured someone would bid at least 30 for Thomas. I definitely wanted Edelman and had no idea what others would bid on him.

Last year I basically made no use of my bid money, only using it to pick up minor players week to week. Figured I'd make some use of it this season.

TE Thomas is available for trade, by the way.

Looking to trade Julius Thomas. I don't need WR or TE. Could possibly use an upgrade at RB or QB. So maybe I trade Thomas/Vick for a QB, or Thomas/Richardson for a RB. OR, Thomas straight across for a RB. Looking for a fair deal. No lopsided deals.

I'm not mentioning my game against Promize until Thursday because who knows what scoring adjustment will happen... Last week there was about 10 points thrown around between Tuesday and Thursday.

What I will say is this is an odd year for RBs. The average starting WR and TE are earning more than the average starting RB. Here's a breakdown of each position so far.

QB 19.73
RB 9.76
WR 14.44
TE 10.25
W/T 3.61
PK 8.43
DL 6.17
LB 10.96
DB 6.95
IDP 5.58

So I think I did this last year in the AAA league I was in, and I've tried to do in the past when I've had time. This year I'm going to try to keep it up throughout the season and I'll update this every 3 weeks.

This is a breakdown of how many points your players scored by position. I took the top 2 scoring WR (if you started 3 WRs), the top scoring TE (if you started 2 TEs) and the lowest of the 3 at the W/T. The same holds true for the IDP flex. If you started 3 DL, 3 LB, or 3 DB, then your lowest scoring of the three is the flex score. Note: No one has started 3 DL yet.

Amazing - out of my 3 leagues I considered this the weakest at RB. And in this league I figured RB for me would be one of the lowest. Will be great if I can maintain that rb status thru the season AND if my WR can get up to where I think they should be. But really McCoy has been a beast and BJGE has propped that up with some nice TD's. Not a lot of yardage. Dont think my rb's have the makings to sustain that kind of average unfortunately.

Yeah, I had planned to do any waiver claims this morning but looks like that might not happen. Hopefully there's nobody I really wanted. Good chance that waivers go off with only some teams having their claims in.

I'm really benefiting from scheduling this year. I rank only 7th in points, but my average pts against of 126.5 are second lowest in the league.

Hoping the law of averages doesn't catch up with me. My all-play record (48-43) suggests I should be only 7-7 or 8-6. Yet my "power rank" is #3 - which I don't really understand. I guess that's largely because of my actual 10-4 record.

There's some major disconnect here, then. Looking over the logs, Guru got 2 picks this week during the waiver period.

On Wed Oct 9, you got 2 picks (lawrence timmons and vincent brown).

There's examples every week of people getting multiple waiver picks.

So its possible. I'm asking what am I doing wrong that my waiver requests are clumping up and I'm only getting 1 when others are getting 2.

[74-76] We are using conditional blind bidding, which means that you set up your bids in groups. Within a grouping, your bids are evaluated from top to bottom. Once an award is made, the rest of the grouping is discarded.

So, if you want multiple players, you must set them up in multiple groups.

Interesting night for me. I run 3 teams, this one, a money league and a fun office league. In the fun office league I was holding onto a 14 point lead coming into Monday and I had a narrow lead in this league. Then Russel Wilson throws a bomb to Golden Tate who is covered by Janoris Jenkins. Jenkins who I had going JUST missed intercepting that ball. Instead it was caught by Golden Tate who my opponent here had going...to give him the win and my opponent in the fun league had Wilson and that bomb...gave him the win. Ugh. Can I call a mulligan?

I'm not sure how my team is still doing this. My WRs are just barely passable, and my kicker is outscoring all but one of them. My RBs are a hodgepodge of backups who are doing just well enough and my 2nd round pick has be injured and fumbling all season. The guy who I drafted to be the backbone of my defense is sitting in rehab. And I'm entering the week I thought would be my bye week hell with out any real roster dilemmas... This said I'm the second highest scoring team in the league and I'm baffled. The luck is going to wear off soon I imagine, but hopefully it's lasted just long enough to make the playoffs.

@Holt Do you have any interest in Tannehill? Double digit points week in and week out. Not super exciting, but steady. He's cheap to get.

@Khahan I was at trivia on Monday night with the game on only one TV because around here the Blackhawks and World Series were on the other 4 TVs. We had a situation in one of the AAA leagues yesterday that warrants some consideration.

A manager submitted a waiver claim through his cell phone interface. Apparently, the dropped player was inadvertently set as Vernon Davis instead of a lesser player. I've heard that the phone interface for MFL is very difficult to use, so while I think it could have been avoided with proper care, I know that errors made through smartphone transactions have happened before.

In this case, another manager made provisions to add Davis immediately at the end of the lockout period (3pm ET). The error was caught later in the day and reversed, but some hard feelings have been created.

Once upon a time, we did require all dropped players to go through a separate waiver process, which would have allowed for extra time to correct this type of mistake before other managers were able to react. Unfortunately, with a blind bidding waivers process, this isn't possible.

There is an option to implement a "Can't cut" list. It's supposedly maintained by fantasysharks.com. I don't know who's on it.

We could implement a lockout period for all dropped players. Perhaps anyone dropped is locked until Thursday at 3pm (or some such time). That would allow for dropped player errors during claims processing to be resolved. Perhaps something to consider for next year (or even this year). Claims processing is the only time that a player can be dropped when the manager isn't necessarily online at the time.

We could also subject all dropped players (at any time) to a one (or more) day lockout period. In that case, I think the locked players are released just after midnight (not sure what time zone that's using.) It would also mean that players dropped on game day could not be picked up prior to the following week's blind bidding. It was mostly for that reason that we decided not to put dropped players through a lockout period. But maybe something to at least cover blind bidding drops makes sense.

Any reactions?

I've already voiced my opinion enough on the other board I think, one thing I think I'd like to add:

Is that we should temper our expectations. This site is mainly made FOR FUN. I have no issues with that myself, if wanted a different experience, I could play in a "pay league".

As a mainly fantasy baseball player my mindset is, "Player dropped goes to waivers." It seems odd to me that players dont go to waivers when they are dropped.

Re Khahan,

That used to happen. And players would be locked. And then some figured out that cycling through players began to lock a player and would prevent another owner from being able to pick them up.

Should be on the owner to make sure their waivers are correct. It shows you what you submitted on the next page and you can always go back in and check at any time. I can understand if someone makes a mistake and immediately says something if it isn't reversible by them, such as when I dropped Mario Williams accidentally by having multiple waiver windows open which causes issues. I was able to pick him back up quickly, but if someone else had picked him up in the couple seconds he was available I'm ok with a situation like that being fixed. Submitting incorrect waivers then still not noticing you dropped Vernon Davis in the 3 hours after waivers run isn't something the commish should have to fix.

Don't like can't cut lists since a slow update could really hinder someone for making a pickup to replace an injury.

Could go back to locking players when they're dropped. I forget what limitations the MFL software has in handling that. Assuming you can, would just be easiest to set each player lock individually for 1 day rather than trying to have everyone unlock at the same time every day. It's a mess trying to set up and have run correctly. So much easier the way it is.

We could use a 24-hour lockout for dropped players. I confirmed with MFL that the time limit is applied based on the actual time, so if a player is dropped at 3:05 Wednesday, he can be added at 3:05 Thursday. It would still be first come, first served at that point.

As Letter_J noted, with a similar setup in past years, we did have issues with players who were added and then dropped within 24 hours of game time, effectively taking them out of the pool until the following week's waivers. That is one reason that we went to the current practice of no lockout.

Not a fan of the lockout, but their should be some sort of time limitation for transaction reversals. Say if you dropped the wrong guy in blind bidding, if you don't say something before FCFS at 3 PM on Wed, well tough luck.

That gives someone 3 hours to notice their mistake and could be corrected before FCFS. Of course if someone changes their mind after blind bidding they could just say "Oops, dropped the wrong guy", but I'd prefer to think that no one would resort to that.

I've been trying to be polite about this situation but I'm increasingly irritated with every post. You're pissed because you didn't get the 2nd best TE in fantasy football due to an erroneous drop. Beautiful. I'd rather win a league based on skill, not on some gift. You would have basically traded no one to Fugazi for Vernon Davis. I'm sure the rest of the league would be cool with a trade of No One for Vernon Davis. Only a noob fantasy player would think anyone intentionally drops V Davis. It doesn't happen. Maybe in some terrible public yahoo league but not around here.

So, either your position is "Screw you to anyone who drops the wrong player - drop P Manning? So sad for you", or "Fugazi and Holt are full of crap and Fugazi is so moronic that he cut Vernon Davis and then changed his mind the next day and lied to the commish to get his player back". Either way, super lame.

Not everyone sits around checking their rifc bidding claims and results every hour. The idea that someone should have an hour or two to report an hour is too restrictive. If someone accidentally cuts one of their best players, just fix it and move on. Normally there isn't so much whining involved.

I have been somewhat biting my tongue, but how the hell do you exactly know what your Bro meant do Holt?? He told you something, and you believed him. I accept that. But to say someone does not dump valuable players is naive.

And if I have two pet peeves; it's one, it was decided before anybody seemingly chimed in on it and explained why they felt a certain way because of Blind Bidding, and two, I'm having a hard time seeing how you miss press Turbin versus Davis.

If it's a WR, I might see it. Go to your team and try to dump a RB instead of a TE, even on a mobile home. And then confirm it. But to say afterwards, missed that one because of Turbin versus Davis seems illlogical.

How do I know? Because we talk to each other about fantasy football almost every day, he's not a moron, and I was the one who got the phone call "CRAP - Davis isn't on my roster! I must have accidentally cut him! I'm trying to add him but it says unavailable. Post on Rotoguru for me because my phone is timing out". Unfortunately I was at Walmart getting a new tire installed and wasn't able to email Guru and MJD til I got home later. It took a while.

Can you imagine his draft rationale "5.06 Vernon Davis - Expecting big things. If he gets 13 points a game, I may even keep him on my squad through week 8. Unfortunately, it turns out he has a bye week this season. Can you believe it? A bye week! Because of his bye week, I'll have to drop him because I never seem to have any scrub RB's to cut or anything like that. It won't be any use to try to trade him. #2 TE's don't have much value so why bother? Hoping for a great 8 games from him!".

However this happened is 100% irrelevant.
The bottom line is one team picked up a star player for nothing.
If this was a trade it would need to be overturned.
The manner in how the "trade" was executed doesnt matter, it upsets the the competitive balance of the league.
Im a little surprised that a manager in a Rotoguru league would want to win a league by taking unfair advantage of the situation.

Why wasn't he in on FCFS waivers? Because he didn't log in to see the claims results til 4 pm cst, about 2 hours after FCFS begins. People have things to do other than monitor their fantasy teams throughout the day.

As far as other poeple not being in on it, you did pick him up at 2:00, most of the league probably doesn't check in during the 11am to 2 pm time period and had no idea, and the ones that did notice it probably knew it was an error and didn't bother scheduling around picking him up.

Now that you mention it, I think it was actually his kicker D Akers that he had set to cut rather than Turbin. He had multiple adds set up with Akers as the guy to cut. To get Davis back on the roster they had to cut someone (Turbin) because Akers was already cut for Gipson. Additionally, one of his adds was WR D Davis, which may or may not have been part of the problem. I am also the only one in my family who doesn't have to wear glasses. Just sayin.

Logged in to his team to take a look at his claim requests. Looks like, if I'm reading correctly, he set up a couple rounds of claims. One round has DB Gipson for kicker Akers (along with a couple other moves). Then the round after it has Gipson for TE V Davis (along with one other move). So the cut was meant to be Gipson for Akers. The K is right next to the TE so this is where the misclick happened.

Another solution to this is simply not opening FCFS until later in the day, probably at 9 or 10pm eastern. If there is a drop made in error, this is more than enough time to get the word out. There's no real reason we need FCFS throughout the day. Most of my other leagues run waivers Wednesday evening.

The issue I'm now worried about for the future is... Are we setting ourselves up for more similar issues? How about one's that are even less clear. I.e. Lineup decisions? This could turn into a slippery slope...as its easier to mess that up than the waivers IMHO

RE 139:

http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/read.pl?board=foot&thread=5482&last=1378329764

Blind bidding will continue throughout the playoffs. At the beginning of the playoffs, the top seeded team will receive an additional blind bidding allocation of $16, the second seed will receive $14, … with the 8th seed receiving $2. These allocations will be added to any balances remaining from the regular season. Any blind bidding ties during the playoffs will be awarded in favor of the better seeded team.

If a playoff game ends in a tie score, the team with the better seed shall advance.

There will be no restriction on player add/drop transactions for teams still active in the championship playoffs. Teams which are not still active in the Championship playoffs may not make any transactions - adds or drops - even if they are still competing in the Consolation bracket.

I'll work on seeding the playoffs tomorrow morning. Remember that the top six teams in W/L record advance, as well as the two other teams with the most points. Then the bottom four seeds (5-8) are re-seeded based on total points.

The six teams not advancing to the championship round will be placed in a consolation bracket.

My god. I score the 4th most points on the week and still go 0-2. I had a few bad weeks in there, but around them I felt my scores were pretty solid but my matchups really sucked.

Less than a full point difference between me and smith for total points scored but a 5 W difference in our records. Wiggs and I really stood out above most other teams for total points against. I think a bit of luck in the schedule helped me last year, but it certainly didn't care much for me this year!

Just a frustrating season but at least I have the consolation bracket to play in another week.

Playoff brackets have now been set up.

Championship bracket seeding:
1 Holt
2 Guru
3 twilson
4 TD
5 Kyle
6 IAC
7 Bonka
8 s R

Note: sR ranked #5 in the regular standings, but was dropped to the 8th seed based on points. IAC and Bonka get the two "wild card" spots. Youngroman gets the "close but no cigar award", missing the last playoff spot by only 12.36 pts, less than a point per week.

Blind bidding values have been adjusted to award an extra $16 to the top seed, $14 to the #2 seed, ... $2 to the #8 seed.

The other 6 teams have been placed in the consolation bracket. The first round consolation bracket loser with the most points scored in that first round game will advance to round two, in order to preserve an even number of teams. The pairings in the second round will be adjusted if needed to avoid a rematch of a first-round game.

Teams that are not alive in the championship bracket may not add or drop players for the remainder of the season. Add/drop/waivers will continue as usual for the teams still alive in the Championship bracket.

Note: It is possible that Thursday morning statistical corrections will cause a seeding adjustment, particularly as IAC and Bonka are only separated by 0.48 points for the #6-#7 seeds. Any other shifts in seeding seems rather implausible - but we'll find out on Thursday.

Please let me know if anything appears to be improperly set up.

Can anyone knock off the Holt juggernaut?

Holt's team had an "all-play" winning percentage against eventual playoff teams of 83.5%.

If we assume that for each playoff game he has an 83.5% chance of winning, then his statistical probability of winning the playoffs is 58%. (calculated as .835^3)

As I noted in yesterday's blurb, the #1 seed has only won the RIFC playoffs once in 9 years. But I don't think we've ever had such a dominating performance in the regular season before.

Wow - we actually did get a scoring adjustment that impacted the playoff seedings.

For IAC, Daryl Smith gained a pass defensed, but Philip Wheeler lost a half sack and a QB hit. Net change was a loss of 1 point. But that drops IAC to 0.52 behind Bonka, instead of 0.48 ahead.

So, Bonka moves up to the #6 seed, and IAC drops to the #7 seed.

Will be interesting to see if this changes the outcomes of any of this weekend's games.

1st of all the birth of my twins were exactly when the draft started, and although I had many people who helped me with keeping up on the draft I didnt prepare the way I should have.

2nd of all I feel like every team I played this season had the game of their season. Just bad luck.

Anyways, I will be back next season playing AAA and I am planning on returning to play with you all again in another season. Thanks for having me. Good luck to everyone still playing

If the seedings hadn't been adjusted last week based on the Thursday scoring adjustments, I'd have advanced. But that created the only first round matchup that would beat me. Argh.

The nature of the beast. Year after year.

In the consolation bracket, Promize advances as the losing team with the best score of the first round. In order to prevent a repeat matchup for this week, I had to restack the games in that bracket. So the top seed (Youngroman) now faces Promize, and Khahan faces Judy.

When your worst week is still good enough for 6th best score in the league, you know your team is ridiculous.

This is the first time since 2009 (and before then I don't know where league histories are) that I've won a playoff game in an RIFC league. Luckily I've made the playoffs and been able to move up in 2011 and 2012.

Suggestion for next year:

Move Waiver day to Thursday instead of Wednesday (during the playoffs). Considering that we've had some close calls, and it could affect who is still "in it" or not, and thus, whether they should be bidding or not.

I'll be watching to see tomorrow's scoring adjustments, as there have been significant adjustments the last few weeks, and the score differential was under 2 points.

I just checked and with 9 more points in the regular season and I would be the RIFC champion now. with 10 regular season points more I would be have been runner up. So it is back to AAA where I try my best to be back a year later. see you then.

Thanks Judy, YR, IAC. Was a fun, lucky, and fairly disaster-free season. Was hoping my brother could pull off a win in AAA2 but his team had it's worst week of the season. Think he scored 110 after averaging 152 in the regular season.

The week 16 results seemed pretty atypical across the board(low scoring). I don't know if it was more due to people not setting lineups or to weird things happening in the NFL. We have a small money league here in Enid and were discussing maybe having the season end in week 15. Kind of early but week 16 is starting to feel like the wrong time to decide a league champ.

In roto baseball - if you have a great team then you'll just win. But fantasy football, in week 16 you're at the mercy of a lot factors you have no control over. Guess there is no good answer. Leagues that play through week 17 are just nuts.

Congrats to everyone who qualified for RIFC next season. Dave Hall - thanks as always. We all appreciate everything you do. Merry Christmas.
