Subject: RIFC 2014: Draft Rationales

  Posted by: Guru - [330592710] Mon, Aug 25, 2014, 09:38

This thread will contain all of the individual pick rationales for the 2014 RIFC draft. RIFC managers should supply those rationales either in the comment section at the draft site, or in the Rationale Collection thread. You will not be able to post directly into this thread.

I expect that this thread will be updated daily.

1.01 Charles, Jamaal KCC RB
Pick selection: I took the Number one slot in large part because of the convenience of the double pick and I wanted a stud RB. After that the freestyle begins.

I originally planned on drafting McCoy here but even "minor turf toe" scares the hell out of me. Charles has tons on natural talent so that makes this decision easy after hearing of shady's toe problems.

1.02 McCoy, LeSean PHI RB
Draft Position #2: Before the choosing of draft slots began I decided that I would take, under the Bonzai format, the lowest slot available (excepting the turn, which I don't like) unless one of slots 1-4 was available, in which case I would have to ponder reflectively.

Choosing at 12, there were left only slots 2, 6, and 8. No need to ponder, as slots 6 and 8 were in a tier that I considered least desirable; no tier 1 players available, and yet not getting much Bonzai advantage. Slot 2 was my favourite among the first 4, as I would take either McCoy or Charles over Peterson.

I like McCoy over Charles because of concern over Kansas City's disintegrating offensive line. I don't think newly acquired [undrafted] will steal touches from McCoy.

1.03 Peterson, Adrian MIN RB
Pick #3: 2/3/5/6/8 were the remaining choices. I heavily considered 2, 3, and 5. I seem to have less aversion to a top pick in Bonzai than many of the other owners, so I was content with my options. I figured I was choosing between McCoy, Peterson, and Calvin Johnson with my slot pick, and I am enamored with all three. I didn’t really want to get stuck with Forte at 5, and I decided that my top three backs were similar enough in quality to grab slot #3.

Peterson is an elite and durable talent, about as safe as a RB can be. I would’ve preferred Charles and then McCoy, but the difference was minor.

1.04 Forte, Matt CHI RB
Pick Selection: I had an early pick and could have picked anywhere, but I chose 4th as I would get one of the top 4 RB's and not be at the very very end of the draft the next three rounds. I feel like RB has less depth in this era than WR does, so I decided to try to get a top one and hope I dont get hit with the IR bug. This whole draft is kind of a shrug and wing it. I've tried all kinds of things over the years and this seemed as good of a strat as any.

Forte: I knew I was getting either Peterson or Forte here, so it wasn't really that tough of a choice. I like Forte because he adds the extra dimension of pass-catcher.

1.05 Johnson, Calvin DET WR
1.05 Pick Selection: I was towards the end of the draft selection queue, and couldn't find a slot I was super happy with, so I based my 5th slot on: a) Hoping one of the TOP 4 RBs would slide, otherwise Anchor the WRs with Calvin Johnson who consistently outperforms at that position. b) Don't pick next to / between Bonka and Guru. I find it really hard picking next to them, as they let little slide, and always draft exceptionally well. 1.05 Calvin Johnson, WR, DET - When he's available to start, he's a start with absolute confidence. He gets it all: receptions, yardage, and TDs. He has been THE most consistent / dependable performer in the recent NFL (besides maybe: Jimmy Graham). Very excited to have him as my #1 pick, because that's what you want from them... an every week start.

1.06 Lacy, Eddie GBP RB
Draft position 6: I only had two choices, when my turn came up, 6 & 8. I would have much preferred to draft more towards the end of the first round. I choose 6 as I thought I had a pretty good chance of landing Lacey.

I think Lacey is in for a big year, last year he finished as a top 10 RB ( as a rookie ) with Rodgers missing half the season. I view Aaron's return as a positive, Lacey is a 3 down back and not in jeopardy of losing goal line opportunities.

Only 24, I'm sure there's room for improvement for this all around back, in one of the leagues best offenses.

1.07 Graham, Jimmy NOS TE
There were spots open near the top and bottom of the draft but I finally decided I wanted to open the draft with Graham. Figured #7 was the lowest I could go and still have a sure shot at him. There are several guys on fairly equal ground in the top tiers of RB & WR but there is one TE who stands out above all others. If he were a WR he'd probably still go in the 1st round.

1.08 Thomas, Demaryius DEN WR
I had a clear top 7 where I was hoping one would fall to me. Unfortunately one did not and I was left choosing between Thomas who I was not sure was a step above the next WRs and Lynch who carried more risk with him. I chose Thomas to be safe and he "seemed to be more the consensus pick."

1.09 Lynch, Marshawn SEA RB
I have to say it was a little surprise to me that he was still available when my first pick came around. His availability may be due to his past wear and tear along with powerful alternatives behind him on the defending championship team. Regardless, I tend to believe he could still have at least one or two years left in tank (despite I often do bad with my top picks; the most recent evidence was using the first two picks for Prince Fielder and David Wright this year).

1.10 Murray, DeMarco DAL RB
Pick #10: Picking first in RIFC what a dream. Well with the 3RR I decided it would be better to draft in the backend so I could get 4 picks in the top 50. I always like to have a top 10 player so I decided that I wouldget that exact spot. If a top 6 RB fell to me, great! If one of the two top WRs fell to me excellent! If Jimmy Graham was here I was probably going to have a really tough decision.

I had Murray as my #7 RB on my board it was really only between him and Lynch. I also looked at possibly going with one of the second tier of WRs or Manning, but at this point I felt it was the most prudent to draft a workhorse RB who was going to get a boatload of carries. Murray was my guy and with the receptions he gets his yardage total should be around 2k with 10 TDs.

1.11 Rodgers, Aaron GBP QB
Slot Selection 11: I chose this slot because I thought either the top TE on my list(Graham), or one of the top two receivers (C. Johnson, or D. Thomas) would be available. If none were avaiable, my backup plan was to choose Rodgers at QB. I think the "Banzai" draft format favors those picking later in the first round.

When I looked at draft board after pick 1.09, I was surprised that TE and WRs I was considering were already gone, and Lynch was still available. So I changed my plans and would have picked Lynch if he as still available at 1.11. I ended up getting Rodgers who I think will be the top fantasy QB this year. I considered Manning, but I don't think he will come close to matching last years production after losing Decker as a WR and Welker's return uncertain with his concussion.

1.12 Ball, Montee DEN RB
Slot Selection 12: I felt like this slot had some decent flexibility in early rounds when looking at ADP. While I won't land one of the top RBs I should be able to get a quality RB in round 1 and possibly another in round 2. If I don't go RB/RB I can go RB/WR and probably grab a decent RB in round 3.

I would have preferred Murray or Lynch here but they didn't make it. This was between Ball and Arian Foster. I've taken Foster in a lot of drafts this year and wanted to diversify a little. Foster's hamstring is still giving him problems and this isn't PPR. Hopefully Ball lives up to the hype he's getting for this season. He'll have great opportunity with defenses having to focus on Manning.

I could have gone with Dez here, which was very tempting, but I'm more comfortable starting RB so I have more flexibilty in the next 2 to 3 rounds. RB also isn't as deep as WR.

1.13 Bryant, Dez DAL WR
"13th pick - I've picked towards both ends using this style of draft, and cannot stand the long wait of always picking on the end of the second through fourth rounds. Plus this gives me a chance to nab a couple of top WR's at the turn.

When I p"icked towards the turn I was looking to grab a top WR. I've always found it painful having to decide between mediocre WR's on gameday in a league that you can start 3 WR… so, I at least have one that I don't need to worry about. Bryant has 12 and 13 "TD's over the past couple of years, along with >1200 yds; there is a lot of consistency there and a lot of monster games. I expect more of the same this year. I was acually planning to get AJ Green here, but upon comparing the two decided on Bryant."

1.14 Green, A.J. CIN WR
Pick 14: I knew I'd be away for the first half of the draft, so picking at the turn would make things a bit less complicated. I always seem to be near the end of round #1 anyway, so it's familiar territory.

I figured I'd nab a top receiver with this pick, and Green fits that bill. A repeat of last season would be fine.

2.01 Jones, Julio ATL WR
I didn't plan to go WR/WR with this first turn. I would have preferred a RB here, but the best options seemed to be Arian Foster (injury risk), LeVeon Bell (suspension/knucklehead risk), or Giovani Bernard – who is on the same team as Green. I also considered Peyton, but decided to defer at QB and not pay up for his monster 2013. So I went with the "best player available" mantra.

2.02 Marshall, Brandon CHI WR
I'd already decided on getting two WR. With AJ Green off the board, Marshall was my next choice. Not overly concerned with the developing second option in Chicago as it should help take some of the defensive attention away from Marshall.

2.03 Gronkowski, Rob NEP TE
This is not what I had in mind when picking this draft slot. I figured I'd go RB/RB and it worked out that I could have grabbed Ball and Foster. I'd LOVE to grab Gronk at 3.03 but I just don't think he'd make it. Being that we can start up to 2 TE and only start 2 RB, this pick lets me grab a RB the next few rounds if I see good value rather than having to pass. Gronk should give me a huge advantage at TE over everyone but Graham. This feels early but...Gronk Smash! (Please stay healthy)

2.04 Nelson, Jordy GBP WR
I picked a QB in round 1, so I was looking for RB, WR, or TE. I thought there would be more of dropoff in WR/TE than RB before my next pick at 3.04. I considered picking J.Thomas, A.Brown, or A.Jeffery. I went with Nelson because he the #1 WR on one of the top passing offenses. Because he is on the same team as my QB, I am betting that Rodgers does not get injured this season. If both Rodgers and Nelson stay healthy and have big seasons, my team should do well.

2.05 Manning, Peyton DEN QB
I couldn't pass this one up this time. The best QB on my board. The best QB in this generation (for fantasy purposes, and arguably non-fantasy purposes). And the targets around him are only getting better. Both his top RB and top WR were taken in the first round. There's no reason to assume he doesn't throw for 4,000 yards, 35+ TDs and a very minimal INT total.

2.06 Brown, Antonio PIT WR
I planned to do either Graham/running back at first round and chose one receiver at the second. I thought I could not go wrong with Brown here as he has emerged as the favorite target for Big Ben. Though he has not yet in the same discussion with guy"s like Johnson and Thomas, he is not far behind."

2.07 Bernard, Giovani CIN RB
After my first pick I looked ahead to see who I liked around pick 20 and decided on Nelson and Gronk. While these players did not make it to me they would have left me in a RB hole. Knowing I wanted to prioritize RB here if possible I was considering Foster and Morris without expecting Bernard to be available. When he was a happily grabbed him over the alternatives

2.08 Brees, Drew NOS QB
I gave a lot of consideration to Z Stacy and LeVeon Bell but I knew that Brees was still available and couldn't resist pairing him up with J Graham. He averaged 22.4 fantasy points per game last season. That's the kind of high impact player who is welcome on my team. There will still be solid RB's available for a while, and I don't want one of the 16 point Charlies at QB.

2.09 Jeffery, Alshon CHI WR
I knew I wanted to start my team with a RB and WR. Mission accomplished, although I was tempted to deviate and grab Julius Thomas at TE with this pick.

Jeffery is arguably the 2nd option in Chicago, but still managed to be the 9th ranked WR last year. With a great combination of size and speed, there's huge upside here. Antonio Brown ( taken a few picks earlier ) and Keenan Allen were also on my radar.

2.10 Foster, Arian HOU RB
This was a tough one to gut out. After last year, it was obvious that Arian probably wouldn't be a top 3 pick anymore. However, scoring wise, he has that upside of scoring potential. I'm not sure how explosive the Houston offence will be this year, but I like [undrafted] at QB.

2.11 Martin, Doug TBB RB
I was perfectly willing to get a WR here, but I didn't like the WR available at this point of the draft as I did the RB's. Martin is coming off an injury and seems to be ready to go, and considering his talent, could be a really nice grab at this spot. I also liked Morris here, but I liked Martin slightly more - just more speed and game breaking capability.

2.12 Bell, Le'Veon PIT RB
In my original draft plan, I was hoping Gronkowski might still be available, but Bonka took care of that at 2.03. I didn’t expect to have Bell as an option, but his potential suspension for marijuana DUI seems to have pushed him down the draft board a half round or so. Starting RB/RB is not my preferred strategy as it limits my drafting flexibility for the next few rounds, but I have a feeling that the value will be elsewhere for a while.

I strongly considered Randall Cobb here. If he manages to get some punt returns, he is very likely to exceed this draft location. However, [undrafted]’s emergence last year after his injury makes me skeptical that Cobb will be more than the backup PR. Bell was the last of a tier for me, so I decided "to pull the trigger."

2.13 Ellington, Andre ARI RB
I considered 4 running backs here: Ellington, Gerhart, Stacy and Spilller.

Although he was the highest ranked on most boards I saw, I decided to pass on Stacy (who went at 3.01). Besides the underwhelming 3.9 YPC, I fear Stacy could end up in at least a significant timeshare by playoff time. He also has the hardest schedule of any RB.

I kept being drawn to Toby Gerhart (3.08). He has a great RB schedule both in the regular season and the playoffs. And he was just been so good when he did get to play . But in the end I decided that he was more of a plodder who gets what is blocked and has a much worse offensive line in Jacksonville. His uninspired preseason did nothing to relieve my fear. He's a bargain at where he ended up being picked though.

At one time I thought I had decided on Spiller (3.04). But as a Bills fan, something is just wrong here. I don't like the way Coach Marrone is using him and I'm not convinced he has that burst all the way back after his injury last year.

So I eventually turned to Ellington. He has a bad schedule, but the decent playoffs. He's not going to get the 25 touches his coach talks about but the intention to give him a heavy workload is clear. In the end I concluded that he had the most upside. Anything like his production of last year with twice the touches would make him a spectacular bargain here.

Had Guru picked overnight, I would have auto-selected Randall Cobb. In the morning though, I looked through what was out there for RB's, and what would be around my next pick, and didn't want to have to rely on those options as my primary rb... as te"mpting as it was to lock down my 3 WR positions. So, then I started researching RB's in more depth. Had it between Morris and Stacey, and was actually leaning Morris and that decision was made for me when Guru took Stacey on the turn."

Alright Cobb, I took you in the 3rd last year and you got hurt. Please stay healthy (you too Rodgers) since I took you over the RBs which I'll now be worried about until my next pick. If Morris was available here I'd have taken him but of course he went right in front of me. Perhaps I should have taken Foster at 2.03. I just don't think Gronk would have been here. Hopefully Cobb can provide solid consistent scoring for me. I'm not that big on him since he's not a big guy and isn't likely to score a lot of TDs. Would not have went WR here if we didn't start only 2 RBs.

3.04 Spiller, C.J. BUF RB
After picking a QB and WR, I planned to pick a RB in rounds 3 and 4. Spiller is an explosive runner capable of big plays. His fantasy ranking is lower this season because of competition for RB touches. Despite this, I think Spiller's stats will improve over 2013 because he had a high ankle sprain that he played thru in 2013, Jackson's age, and Buffalo having a running offense.

My queue of Gio Bernard, Doug Martin, Andre Ellington, Zac Stacy, Alfred Morris and CJ Spiller was spent. I knew I wanted to go RB here and looking at the WRs that were available I didn't feel any one was worth a 3rd round pick. Bush has plenty of weapons around him and last year he was my best RB. If he repeats what he did last year I'll be happy.

Thought about drafting Orange Julius or Alfred Morris/Reggie Bush here, but both were long gone then. I actually did not intend to use the third pick for the quarterback (no knock on Luck’s capability and potential) but got to deviate from my plan (if any) to grab the best available player in terms of ADP when I was up. Selecting Luck with the 34th overall may be a reach in retrospect, but personally I expect him to be the difference maker in weekly matchups here and there.

3.08 Gerhart, Toby JAC RB
What can I say? Started out with Graham and Brees so it's time to start making a dent in those RB/WR slots. With RB in short supply I go with who I feel is the best one available. He should get plenty of carries and has shown some ability in the pass game. All I'm asking from him is to stay healthy and hopefully put up over 10 ppg. Not a lot of solid options left at this spot. Vereen, Mathews, and Tate were there but overall I felt safer with Gerhart.

3.09 Foles, Nick PHI QB
I really hadn't planned on taking a QB this early, but I waited last year and it didn't pan out to well, and when I saw Andrew Luck go a few picks earlier, I decided maybe I should grab one now.

Foles was probably the surprise of last season, averaging nearly 265 yds and 2.5 TD's per game, and, while not exactly fleet of foot, rushed for 3 more. Once becoming a starter, he led the league in yards per attempt, QB rating and TD efficiency.

I expect some regression, and, although I've seen him mentioned as a possible " bust " this year, he's commanding one of the NFL's top offenses, and should put up solid numbers.

It doesn't happen often enough that I actually get a true "targeted" pick where I was them (without reaching). As a rookie, he was able to put up top 15 WR numbers. This year, with more experience and a better raport with his QB, can we expect better? I hope so.

3.11 Johnson, Andre HOU WR
After going classic 2000's with RB/RB, I had to grab a WR here in the 3rd round. I had a surprising amount of options here: Cruz, White, Johnson, among others. I selected Andre Johnson because he still has the game to get it done despite his age - 1407 yards last year despite horrible performances from Texans QB's. The age of course is a bit of a concern, but WR's tend to age better than other positions.

3.12 Watt, J.J. HOU DE
This pick was difficult for me not from a lack of value, but rather a surfeit of it. I am quite enamored with both Watt and Percy Harvin. If IAC hadn’t snagged Cordarrelle Patterson at 3.10, he would’ve been in the discussion as well.

Watt’s talent and production are unquestioned. He was the best DL by more than a point last year, and I expect him to regress *higher* due to his relative lack of sacks/TFL in 2013 compared to 2012. The addition of [undrafted] in the rookie draft should prevent defenses from keying on him quite as intensely as in the past. Harvin is an elite talent playing for a coach that wants to maximize his production in all facets of the game. I expect Harvin to be a WR1 this year.

I didn’t expect either player to make it back to me at 4.12, so I was forced to choose between the two. I went with the guy having fewer question marks.

About 4 autopicks in a row were made, landing two picks above me. Now, I thought, I'm going to get J. J. Watt. Yes, I have passed by him in past years foolishly, ignoring his pronounced superiority over other DLs. But now I have him teed up. Yes, thi"s year, I will get him. I left my autopix.

Checking later, twilson snatched him from me at 3.12.

OK, well I guess I'd better get around to picking a WR then. I would have liked Andre Johnson, but Nerfherders snatched him two picks ahead "of me. I took Vincent Jackson. He's been preternaturally durable and consistent. He will put up 1100-1300 yards and 7-9 TD. I'm not worried at all about [undrafted]'s ability to get the ball to him. This new offence is perfect for him. Granted, he' s" in his 30s now. If he weren't, he'd have gone a round earlier.I considered Victor Cruz (4.03) but the Giants pass offence is a moving train wreck and I don't want to be involved."

4.01 Stafford, Matthew DET QB
Struggled a bit here. With 26 intervening picks before my next selection, I had to look pretty far ahead. Decided that it was worth getting a solid QB now, rather than risking a run. The available RB options just didn't seem worth it.

4.02 Mathews, Ryan SDC RB
In the run up to my pick, after a number of other running backs came off the board, I saw there being a sizeable drop-off after Gerhart and Mathews as far as guys with a lock on the starting job and a decent amount of upside. If Mathews stays relatively healthy and has a year similar to last, I'll be happy. Given his past injury history, this may be unlikely, but 1000 yards certainly is attainable for the Charger back.

4.03 Cruz, Victor NYG WR
I keep punting RB due to not really liking the options available the past 2 rounds, hoping I can grab someone I feel is better value at my next pick. Hopefully this doesn't come back to bite me. I may have grabbed Mathews here, not sure, but I had that choice taken from me. The 4th round this year is great for WRs, being able to grab guys like Cruz and Roddy pretty consistently, among others who may fall here. I did consider White as well as the Giant's offense scares me, but Cruz is the #1 there and White's bye is the same as Cobb's and while I'm not that concerned with byes right now, it does carry some weight in tie breakers such as this. Hopefully Eli can not suck so much and get Cruz the numbers I need from him. Small side note, I now have Cobb as well as the guy who will be playing the Cobb role in the Giants offense this year.

I stuck with my plan and chose a 2nd RB. Tate will be the starting RB on a team that will be running the ball alot. The reason I was able to get him in round 4 is that he injury prone. If he stays relatively healthy and plays in most games he should put up round 2 RB numbers.

4.05 Hilton, T.Y. IND WR
Picking Colts isn't exactly my favorite thing to do as a fan of the team, but this pick offered too much value for me to pass on. Hilton is entering the third year and we all know what that means for WRs. Luck and him are entering the second year in Pep Hamilton's offense and since day 1 they've seemed to have a connection on the field. Add in the facts that he has a pass catching TE and the other WR returning to open up more space, and his PR duties are still in tact and you have yourself a pretty decent low-end WR1

4.06 Floyd, Michael ARI WR
I attempted to get my second running back here. However, with the targeted option such as Matthews off the board when my turn came around I was forced to pick another receiver. Floyd may have been becoming the go-to guy in the desert. Same with his elder teammate, his touch downs may be difficult to come by though he should be having no problem exceeding the 1000-yard mark again.

4.07 Jennings, Rashad NYG RB
The number of RB I wanted to have in my starting lineup was starting to thin so I was deciding between Jennings, CJ2K and Sankey here. Jennings put up double digit points in every game he had more than 10 carries last year. With that expected workload he should be able to return good value here without increasing his production.

4.08 Johnson, Chris NYJ RB
I might have been better off taking a WR here, like Fitzgerald maybe. A lot of WR went off the board by the time my 5th rd pick came around. I still needed another RB. Didn't like any of the available ones very much but I knew the list wasn't going to get any better so just decided to get it over with and take a shot on one. Hoping the change in scenery will do something positive. Johnson still has great speed and I think he can go over 1,000 yards once again. Hopefully he picks up a few TD's along the way. I really gave Gore and J Bell some thought. Maybe Gore puts up another typical Gore season but I just don't know. The wheels are gonna come off at some point and I don't want him on my roster when it happens. I like J Bell but he's hard to rely on every game. If JJ Watt had been available I prob would have just drafted him.

This could be a boom or bust pick, some sites have him ranked higher than such notables as Bush, Bell, Jennings... here's hoping.

It's probably foolish to pin your RB2 hopes on a rookie, but he couldn't have landed in a better spot. I liked him as much as some of the other RB options available, and there really isn't much ahead of him in Tennessee. Maybe he won't be a starter right away, but I expect him to be before long

4.10 Percy Harvin, WR, SEA - I wasn't expecting to go WR3 here, but I think his potential value is too high to pass on. If heathy, he should see a ton of opportunities, and he's always got that great get-away potential. Seatle looks to be solid this year on offence (they'll have to be as the D doesn't look as elite anymore). Bonus, he's a fun player to watch.

4.12 White, Roddy ATL WR
IAC broke my heart at 4.10 when he took Harvin. His team is shaping up quite nicely so far. Makes me wish I had chosen slot #5 instead of #3 as I had seriously considered doing. Anyway, Bonzai drafting is over now, so my picks will now be coming in slightly separated pairs. Strategy will shift accordingly.

Not having a WR through three rounds is a very strange position for me. Now is likely the time when I fix that. I think I can get nearly as good an IDP or QB at the 6/7 turn as now. Jordan Cameron is the standout at TE, but I’m not sold on statistical improvement now that he’s the focal point of opposing defenses. Ray Rice is the top RB on my board, but he’ll still be there after the turn. Thus, WR in the 4th it is.

I focused my attention on White, Garcon, and Fitzgerald. Garcon won’t match last year’s numbers, especially in the targets department, but he has dropped far enough that he doesn’t have to. Fitzgerald is still an excellent receiver, but too much of his 2013 production relied on a high touchdown total. Roddy White was awful through week 12, but performed at his historical norms in the final five games. This pick is a bet that a return to health and the return of Julio Jones will equal a return to the Roddy White of old.

4.13 Fitzgerald, Larry ARI WR
As it came to my half of the draft, I was salivating over the prospect of Percy Harvin (4.10) being available. Sure there's some injury risk. I-A-C smartly grabbed him a few picks ahead of me and that was that. I note that in the AAA leagues, Harvin went at 3.13 and 4.01. They were smarter than us here, IMO.

I continued with my intent to pick 3 WRs in a row after starting late. Fitzgerald was now at the top of my list. Vanilla pick: older but not too old, will catch many balls, not especially likely to be injured, will score some TDs -- maybe a good number if things work out. The addition of [undrafted] as another WR helps him I think.

5.02 Edelman, Julian NEP WR
One fantasy football magazine ranked Edelman the #10 WR this year. Isn't that remarkable? Not in PPR, straight up. I don't take that seriously. Although he was the #11 WR in this format last year. The question here is how much a healthy Gronkowski and various other undrafted receivers will eat into Edelman's production. By this pick, i take the view, "Not Much".

Some PR yardage for a cherry on top here.

Others considered: nobody. Edelman was targeted here from the beginning.

5.03 Crabtree, Michael SFO WR
Garcon and Fitzgerald left on the turn, along with the highly interesting Julian Edelman, so I’m back to the drawing board at WR. Cameron and Rice are still under strong consideration. I think there is a real chance Rice rebounds to RB1 this year; if he plays like his pre-2013 self, Bernard Pierce is not nearly talented enough to stand in his way. Cameron has dropped somewhat below his ADP, but picking him still feels like a bit of a luxury. As my third RB through five rounds, Rice would be a luxury too.

The WRs I looked at were Crabtree, Emmanuel Sanders, and DeSean Jackson. All have their warts, particularly extensive competition for targets. I settled on Crabtree as having the best combination of floor and ceiling for my taste at this point in the draft.

I took Crabtree over Rice because I think that WR2 is a more prudent pick than RB3 right now, and Jordan Cameron wasn’t enticing enough to sway me. Though I never know when, there always seems to be a point in each RIFC where I find a TE I like at strong value.

My master plan called for a WR in round 5 and I really wanted Crabtree, but he was snatched a couple picks earlier. So on to Golden Tate.

Tate brings his game to pass happy Detroit with a top notch QB. One of the benefits to playing with a stud wideout is drawing single team coverage and Tate has the skills to have a huge season. Did you know he had the lowest drop rate of catchable targets over the past 3 years?

5.07 Quinn, Robert STL DE
I got Quinn in the 18th rd last season. No chance of that this year. If I don't draft Quinn now then I probably won't bother drafting any DE for another 10-12 turns. I had Watt/Quinn last season and it was great. The prospect of going with two mediocre DE all season doesn't sit right with me so I have to pull the trigger.

I think the rest of my queue was something like E Sanders, V Davis, D Jackson, E Decker. I really wanted E Sanders but thought there was a fair chance that he'd be available in rd 6. Nope. In fact my whole queue was gone by the time my #6 came back.

After failing to secure the running back in the previous round, I fully intended to do so before it was too late. I wanted to get a 2nd WR here if I could find one with value. Sanders plays both "Z" and slot receiever. With Decker gone and Welker's concussion, Sanders should be targeted alot. I think there is a good chance for Sanders to get 1000 yards and 10 TDs with Manning as his QB.

I need another RB for sure now and both Rice and Gore are available. It's a tough choice between them, both have things going against them. It's been a losing proposition to bet against Gore in years past, but he's got to fade at some point right? Rice is missing the first 2 games which could present a problem depending on how the rest of my RB group looks. Then there's the chance Pierce holds on to the starting job or earns more touches during that time. Both RBs have a capable RB behind them that will push for touches so I went with the younger guy who's looked good in preseason.

I struggled with this pick. I had a one-man queue of Desean Jackson as what I thought was an obvious pick; he went off the board several picks before this, so it was back to the drawing board. I thought I should get a QB, but knew Guru already had one, so I could put off that decision for a pick. Set Richardson up to select, but then noticed he had the same bye week as my other two backs. Not good. Looked at Frank Gore, but too many questions, so went with his teammate who should be a solid TE if not overly exciting. Regular trips to the end zone should help with the scoring, but he has been pretty inconsistent in his receiving yards over the past couple of seasons.

A bit of a flier here. You never know with Saints receivers, although if he can produce, Brees will find him. Hoping to get some return yardage from him as well.

With 26 picks to go before I’m back on the clock, I decided to stretch. It may be early for Cooks, but I’m not sure he’d have lasted 2 more rounds.

Interesting that Guru selected Gore right after I had decided against him (will have to see how that turns out for me). Wanted to get one of the next tier of QB's that are quickly thinning out. Hoping to mark last year's Atl showing as a fluke and that they will come out stronger this year, and Ryan will be a big part of that. We'll see... Not excited with this pick, but didn't want to sift through what would be left 30 picks from now. If Cutler is still available, I'll probably regret picking a QB at this slot.

I could have went a few ways here with this pick, either grabbing a QB, WR, or LB. Kuechly was tempting but I'm sure I can find quality LBs later while WRs will continue to come off the board and most quality options will be gone. Wallace provides some value in the 6th with his upside, especially in Miami's new offense. I can't say I'm thrilled with my starting WR group as these aren't the WR types I prefer (I like big guys who are also red zone threats ala Calvin, Dez, etc) but I do think I have a pretty good starting 3 regardless.

This is a risky pick for a couple reasons, but I kind of like the risk for the reward I can get. There's a lot of proving to be done on this team. Decker is going to be looking to prove he's worth the money the Jets paid him. Rex Ryan's staff is coaching for their jobs next season. The two potential QBs are trying to prove that they were 1. worth the draft pick and 2. still worthy of being in the league. I think Decker is primed to have a simular season to his second year when Tebow was his QB. The 2 potential QBs are better than Tebow, and Decker had 600 yards and 8 TDs that season. 1000 yards and 8 TDs is definitely a possibilty and from WR3 that's not shabby

After grabbing my second running back, I turned to address the TE position. Witten had a down year in 2013 by his standard and may see some bounce back in both yardage and touch down departments. The emergence of Williams undoubtedly would cut into his target number, but he is capable of operating with more efficiency to find the end zone to compensate the possible reduction in the reception.

6.12 Posluszny, Paul JAC LB
I was looking in a lot of different directions for this pair of picks. QB, TE, LB, and RB are all under consideration. I’m not sure that the RB I would take now is all that much different from what I can get at 8.12. There are still four QBs on the board that I like fairly similarly, but I’m not sure quite how much longer they will last. I expect Rivers to survive the long turn and Kaepernick to not, but am less certain about Wilson, Romo, and Cutler.

If I don’t take a TE here, I believe that this tier will disappear before I pick again. The same goes for elite LB. I’ve never taken an early linebacker before due to my ability to find mid- to late-round bargains, but I can’t deny that the elites have started to separate from the pack more than in the past.

I settled on jumping in at the start of the LB run. As for who to pick, I focused on Willis, Posluszny, and Derrick Johnson. The latter two have extremely strong track records and consistency in team situation. Willis is the former #1 LB but has performed at a lower (still exemplary) level since the emergence of [undrafted]. With [undrafted] still recovering from major surgery, this may be the year Willis returns to the top of the heap. Of the three, I decided Poslusz"ny is the most likely to keep up the good work."

I'm not crazy about drafting Ridley here but I figure he will see plenty of playing time along side Vereen. It might have been a bit early to handcuff but I didn't feel very confident he would make it back around in the draft.

7.02 Romo, Tony DAL QB
There's not really much difference between the #4 and the #14 quarterback this year. OK, that's an exaggeration, Stafford and Luck stand out from the crowd a bit, but there will be good starting QBs available in the 8th, 9th, maybe even 10th round. I would be quite happy with folks like Cutler and Rivers, who will go late. That's the theory but in my drafting position I'm very susceptible to a run that could shut me out, so I'll step in now and grab someone I like.

Romo is a 4,000 yard, 30+ TD player, behind a super O-line, with a new offensive co-ordinator who likes to pass a lot more than the old regime. The defence is awful so there'll be lots of shootouts.

7.03 Wilson, Russell SEA QB
My plan as of 6.12 was to choose either a QB or TE here, I wanted to see the turn before choosing a course of action. Toral took Romo and Fugazi chose a RB I don’t care for. That left four each of QBs and TEs in the current tier. Wilson is my top remaining QB by a small margin over Kaepernick. Rivers and Cutler would also be fine to own, but I don’t like them quite as much. No TE stands out quite as much from the pack, but I’m not sure I want to rely on obtaining my sleepers of choice. RB is also an option if I am comfortable waiting on QB.

In the end, I decided to take the guy I wanted rather than risk it. I got Wilson as the 12th QB, a ranking he has exceeded in each of his first two years in the NFL (10th and 8th). In 2014, he adds an elite talent to his receiving corps and has another season of experience under his belt. I view last year as his floor, and his upside is easily top 5. Maybe I could’ve gotten him 23 picks later, but I feel comfortable with his value now.

7.04 Maclin, Jeremy PHI WR
I thought about getting a 3rd RB here but most of the starters were, gone while there were still a few #1 WR's out there. Of those, Maclin stood out because he becomes the main target in the high-flying Eagles offense, replacing DeSean Jackson. I love his potential this season.

7.05 Trent Richardson, RB, IND - Trent strikes me as one of many interesting buy-low options at RB. I hadn't seen enough, difference in the tiers leading up to this pick. Unfortunately, his week 10 bye is a small concern, but, it's a long way away, so a lot can happen between now and then.

7.06 Colston, Marques NOS WR
I like this pick, and I needed another WR. Colston is 31 but bounced back from a first poor fist half, to post numbers that would have ranked him 13th overall based on a 16 game pace.

He may not have quite the same athleticism as in earlier years, but he's still Brees's 2nd option in one of the top passing offenses in the league.

OK, with Kendall Wright as my WR1, I need to start grabbing some receivers with some kind of ceiling. There is some risk in drafting Welker but hey, it's round 7. I need to grab some WR who have a good chance of outperforming their draft position and Welker fits the bill.

I somewhat jumped on the bandwagon of linebackers because of the string of the same of being taken starting from the end of 6th round. I considered taking Chandler Jones here but he was just snatched in front of my eyes. Not sure if I jumped the gun here though it is generally believed Johnson could still perform at the elite level (and even better than his 2013 campaign) despite his somewhat advanced age.

I probably picked Ertz a little early, but I thought he was significantly better than any of the other TEs available. I think Ertz will have a breakout season, and will be targeted often in Chip Kelly's offense.

A bit surprised that the draft made it back to me. Didn't have a queue lined up, so looked through where I should focus. I like to focus first on DL for the defensive side where the points you can get drops off in a hurry. Really a glut of options on" the LB side, so I looked who was out there still for DL. Hardy was in top four in a couple of rankings I found. Was liking what I saw until I saw the news of his domestic battery charges. Bad deal. but, I still thought he was the best option."

I missed the start of the elite LB run. That’s a casualty of picking at the turn. Kendricks averaged 9.7 points in this scoring system last year’s rookie season, but almost 11 ppg in the second half. You think of the Eagles in offensive terms, but the pace of their play last year ranked them #1 in tackle opportunities as well. Looking for continued growth from Kendricks in his sophomore season.

Not a sexy pick, but a solid TE who has managed to stay healthy and put up reasonable numbers for a tight end, including 6 TDs in 2013. Led the Panthers in passes caught and receiving TDs I 2013. I’ve seen him ranked as high as #4 among tight ends f"or this year. Not sure I buy into that, but with a late bye, I hope to just plug him in and play him."

Not overly enthused with this pick, but you can never have too many RB's, and Jones_Drew is currently penciled in as the starter in Oakland. Of course, he has a ton of miles on him. If he stays relatively healthy, he can fill in as needed for my starters.

8.03 Cutler, Jay CHI QB
I definitely could have waited until my next pick to grab a QB as only 2 of us don't have a starter yet, but I'm weary of a run on the other QBs that could be low end QB1s. I'd really rather grab a RB here if I knew I could get Cutler or Kaepernick with my next pick because I know a bunch of RBs are going to fly off the board before I pick again. Sadly the risk feels a little high to me. Then it comes down to Cutler vs Kaepernick. A lot of rankings I look at say Kaepernick, but I'm going along with the few guys who think Cutler could put up a monster season. I'm taking him for his higher upside in that Bears offense. He could end up being a top 5-7 QB.

There's not much to say on this pick. In week 9 San Diego plays Miami who gave up an average of 20 points to opposing RBs last year. In week 11 they play Oakland who gave up 22 points to opposing RBs. They also have a bye week in between so health shouldn't be an issue. Woodhead gets plenty of play even as a backup. Good enough

Selecting another tight end here allows me to start two wide receivers and two tight ends if needed in the upcoming fantasy season. Pitta is supposed to be the big-time bounce back candidate this year especially in Gary Kubiak TE-heavy scheme. I just recognized that both my tight ends would have the same bye week, necessitating the need of drafting another tight end for week 11---I may have made some stupid mistakes here.

This was the latest I beleive I have ever waited to draft my RB3 in RIBC. Gerhart and Chris Johnson aren't exactly the greatest one-two punch ever. Thomas should remain heavily involved in the pass game and continue to get his share of carries. Spiller or Jackson? Jackson or Spiller? In 2012 it was mostly Spiller, and in 2013 it was mostly Jackson. Most expect it to be Spiller this year but you never know, and at the very least Jackson should get most of the work on the goal line. As a RB 3 he should be good enough to fill in for my front RB's. He shares a bye with one of my guys but he was good enough at this spot to take anyway.

8.12 Reed, Jordan WAS TE
Well, I was pretty much wrong about everything in these last two rounds. The elite LBs did disappear, but the flow stopped before reaching the next level down. Cutler was taken, but Kaepernick and Rivers are still around. Most importantly, I was wrong about similar RBs being available at 8.12 as 6.12. There was a major run in the 8th round that depleted the position severely. I’m now facing a real risk of not having a viable backup RB, but nothing I see left in the pool is enticing as an 8th/9th round selection.

Also, Jordan Reed remains from the promising upside TE group. He had a stellar rookie season, with only a pair of concussions as a negative. However, it is a very large negative. Another concussion and I will likely lose him f"or at least a month and very possibly the rest of the season, all while he takes up a bench slot. 110 picks in, though, I think the risk is worth the reward."

8.13 Ingram, Mark NOS RB
Now I pay the price for not sticking to me principles and waiting later on a quarterback. Kaepernick, Rivers and Dalton are still available, and the rnaks of prospective RBs have been depleted -- Jones-Drew, Jackson, Miller all gone. And I still need an RB3.

Someone has to run the ball in New Orleans. Pierre Thomas is becoming more and more a pass specialist -- every snap he was on the field last pre-season game the Saints passed. Ingram has one other run-first guy to beat out, and I think he can do it. Adam Levitan says "There are a lot of smart people that think Mark Ingram has been the most impressive running back this month. He’s beasting." At a minimum he'll be the goal line back.

I would’ve taken Kaepernick here had he survived the turn, but I was not disappointed to end up with Tavon Austin. At 8.12, I had narrowed my interest to Reed, Kaepernick, and Austin. As long as I got two of the three, I was happy.

Tavon Austin has still not proven that he understands how to play wide receiver in the NFL. According to beat writers, that has not changed in training camp this year. If I feel this way, why did I take him? Well, he managed to average >10 PPG last year even with these flaws. Granted, a third of his points came in a single game, but only 24 WRs could say that. I got him as WR37. Add in the chance that he improves like many second-year receivers do, and I feel pretty good about this pick despite my misgivings.

The big 1st round FSU rookie. 6'5" 240. I like everything I've read about him, especially that he and Cam Newton are inseparable best buddies:

"Newton has forged a close relationship on and off the field with wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin, the Panthers' first-round draft pick from Florida State.

Together the duo has been lighting it up in practice, connecting regularly on crossing routes and deep balls. When they're not playing pitch and catch, they've been practically inseparable, even spending time together recently boating on Lake Lanier outside of Atlanta, Georgia.

Newton said from the moment he first talked to Benjamin "there was a connection."

Throw to your buddy in the end zone Cam. Throw to him often.

A first rounder if allowed to play at a 9th round price. I knew a decision on his suspension was coming and wanted to get in ahead in case there was positive news, which seemed to be getting some good pub around the time of this pick. Any reduced suspension where I could have Gordon playing on my team in the playoffs would have made the pay off for this pick huge. I looked at my previous 9th rounders in RIBC and they included, Blackmon who barely played last year, Trent Cole who I wish was suspended for the season as then I wouldnt have stubbornly kept in my for so long, and a backup to Stafford the year he broke out so was rarely used. In short, I havent gotten too much here in the past so figured I could stomach the risk for the massive u"pside. Oops."

Well, that was too many RBs going off the board between my picks, as expected. I was left with a very quesitonable choice. I felt I couldn't wait to grab a RB as they'll just keep getting worse. This was a travel day for me, so I had to set a queue well in advance. I decided that one pick should be at LB (my second), and assembled a list of about 5. Mayo was at the top of the list, but Timmons was second. Age 28, with big play ability. Upon further detailed review, I might have ranked him a tad lower, but when you’re setting lengthy queues in a variety of different drafts, sometimes you just take a list and go with it.

Pretty happy to get a RB of this caliber in round 10. Starting RB for Carolina, with over 1100 rush/rec yards combined last year. Downside is lack of finding the end zone – only 5 TDs in 2013, and 4 the year before.

Kind of amazed this pick went through - I set the queue with about 10 picks ahead, and struggled to get separate queues set up for the 9th and 10th rounds… so half expecting to see I mistakenly got two LB. But, all is good. I'm a Colt's fan, so will be watching closely to see if Wayne has recovered from his injury last year. He still has a knack for getting open and is a good redzone target. Happy with him as my third WR. Got him last year in the 5th round... I had a queue of Wayne and Randle; t"he homer aspect and the presumed consistency pushed Wayne over the top, but he does have some age concerns."

This pick was tough. So many needs at this point in the draft and it's a long time before I pick again. I felt like WR was the best use of this pick, although I'm not sure if Hunter was the right WR. It was difficult with Randle sitting there, but I'm buying in to the Hunter hype because the guy has WR2 potential and better fits the mold of WRs I like. Plus I don't want to invest in 2 WRs in the Giants offense in case it does implode. I may have been a tad early on taking him here, but you've got to grab the guys you like because chances are they'll be scooped up before you pick next when you're this close to picking on the turn.

Many experts anticipate Eli to bounce back this year, significantly improving the odds of Randle being one of the guys benefit the most.

When I drafted RGIII I knew I wanted a highend backup to account for the risk that he carries. This was higher than I would have liked to go for a backup but he was the last player I saw available that would not leave me in a huge whole if I ended up having to rely on them.

10.08 Green, Ladarius SDC TE
Adding another receiver to my squad. 6'6" 240 lb, good receiving skills, lots of upside. The Chargers started working him into their game plan here and there late last season and he led the NFL at 22.1 yds per reception. It's hard to predict how many snaps he'll see early on but I think his role will develop as the season winds on. If undrafted Chargers TE1 goes down at any point, I think Green will be a weekly must-start.

10.09 Ware, Demarcus DEN DE
When I read this, how could I not draft the guy :

DeMarcus Ware said he feels "better than I did the last two years going into the season."
"Ware has also been dabbling in an eastern medicine technique called "cupping," where he lies flat on his stomach and puts a bunch of empty jars on his back. A hot flame is put in them, and it supposedly "sucks that bad blood out" of your pores. Whatever works for ya, DeMarcus. "

Now paired with Von Miller in Denver, I'm expecting some big things from Ware, with the way the Broncos can score, I'm sure he will be on the field alot.

10.13 Weddle, Eric SDC S
No DBs picked yet. DBs don't score many points in this format, but the point isn't how many points they score, it's how many points they score compared to what your opponent has. I figure thus that it's more useful to look at a top DB than an LB at the moment.

Weddle isn't my #1 ranked DB; Harrison Smith (11.13) is. But Weddle is the most consistent of the top DBs and hasn't missed a game in 4 years, while there's a small injury discount on Smith. Weddle is a guaranteed tackle guy, and throws in a few big plays.

I looked at the backup QBs available, and that list actually made me more nervous than finding a good starter. My original best choices as backups have bad matchups in Romo's bye week, bad playoff schedules, or both.

Alex Smith isn't anybody who I would have thought of taking as a backup at the beginning of the draft. But he runs a bit, and so projects to score as many points as the rest of the good backups; and he has a great matchup In Romo's bye week, and a decent playoff schedule if Romo is gone by then.

Taking a shot on another rookie WR. #7 pick for the Bucs, 6'5" 230 lb, former basketball player, slated to start opposite V Jackson. Rookie WR's don't usually work out but his size makes him an appealing end zone target, and the lack of competition on the depth chart is nice. We'll see what happens. I really wanted to draft Paul Worrilow, and of course he went on the very next pick. IDP's are easier to fix during the season than the skill positions so I figured I'd keep piling on WR's and worry "about defense another day."

Honestly when it comes to IDP I google a few articles and read their rankings and come away with some names that commonly are ranked high or maybe I was swayed by some anecdotal comment, but in general once I go away I know little more than the name "and I mainly just target one when I decide it would be a good time for an IDP or nothing else stands out to me too much. I was behind in IDP player selection at this point of the draft. I figured I got to do something for that. Drafting another linebacker was considered but I ended up grabbing Wilkerson to fill the first spot of my DT/DE. Being one key cog of stout defense, Wilkerson more likely than not would exceed his production in 2013 especially considering he has been entering into the prime years of his career.

I really like coverage linebackers from high powered offenses, especially those that can score quickly. It just means that they'll be on the field tackling people over the middle. At least that's my reasoning. I also like LBs who have average to below average DLines so when teams do run usually the RBs will be into the second level and it gives my guys a chance for even more tackles. That's my reasoning behind Lofton.

This pick is more interesting, however. 2nd year WR in Pitts, with opportunity to fill the Emmanuel Sanders/Jerricho Cotchery void. Looking for possible top-30 upside. I thought about drafting Weddle in round 11. I really wanted him as my DB1. Unfortunately he went between my picks in 10 and 11 so I decided to get a LB in 10 and get my top rated DB in round 12. 12.06 Miller, Von DEN LB
Again, I tried to address the IDP player concern here. Brian Cushing was also considered here but he was taken one spot earlier. All signs point to Miller has been fully recovered from last year’s season-ending injury. With him being one of the most fearsome defensive players to the quarterbacks and Ware playing opposite to him, there should be of no question for Miller to generate double-digit sacks this year so long as he stays healthy. That said, I should not rely too much on the number of sacks and would be better off drafting one or two tackle machines in the following rounds.

Philly offense is going to generate alot of offense and Matthews has a chance to contribute significantly. While Maclin and Cooper are ahead of him on the depth chart, neither of them are standouts that will prevent Matthews from carving out a bigger" role if he performs. This is late to be drafting a starting WR given my 9th round mishap so maybe going for a safer, more established player would have made more sense, but I decided I wanted to gamble on the offense and system in Philly."

Nice to have a Steeler on the team. He was the Steeler's #1 pick this year and has has sub 4.4 40 speed. That's pretty fast, especially for a LB. He led the Big 10 in tackles, and has had his fair share of tackles in the preseason. He's pretty good in coverage and should be out there on third down. I figured he had as much upside as any of the other LB left on the pile.

13.02 Miller, Heath PIT TE
It's time for a tight end. There is one other manager with nobody at TE yet, but there's only one name left that I feel comfortable with. Besides people in this type of league have a nasty habit of drafting 2 TEs, not caring that some of their league mates are left out. This was demonstrated when I_A_C grabbed Charles Clay off the top of my queue a few picks back.

Miller puts up pretty consistent production in catches and yardage but the question is whether he scores a lot of touchdowns like two years ago, or few touchdowns like last year. Miller is going to be the only Steeler receiver with height on the field, and many observers expect that that will lead Roethlisberger to look for him in the end zone. I did consider Travis Keice here for his breakout potential, but I'd like to start the season out with someone who has a sure job.

This queue was Clay #1, and McCluster #2, as there was a clear gap between Clay and the rest of the TE's. I like McCluster here as 4th RB as he scores most of his points on the return game, which tends not to slump from game to game. I needed a solid RB 4 has my RB 3 shares a bye with one of first two RB's. I'm just hoping the Titans use McCluster as smartly as the Chiefs did.

See above on my IDP picks. Nothing stood out as a tier above at WR or RB, so that left me to looking at the defensive side of the ball with already two QBs on the roster and seeing no reason to prioritize TE depth. With one DL on the roster I figured that was sufficient and I can roll the dice later on the second slot. Trevathan seemed to be the best LB available so I went that route over pursuing a DB.

He has been quietly progressing since joining the league more than two years ago. Though his stats have not been eye-popping, he should be a good backup play-caller on my team. And if he could manage to be sacked much less he could be a viable option were Luck to injure. I hesitated to use him in last year’s fantasy playoff while sticking to Stafford even the latter suffered from the last-season collapse, costing me any chance to win the league. I was split on going QB/RB/TE on this turn and it's hard to pick which 2 of the 3 to go with. I felt I needed to go RB with one of the picks having drafted Ray Rice even though I think Jeremy Hill should do pretty well and fill in when needed. Williams should get a decent amount of work with the Giants and could get goal line carries. It's possible he overtakes Jennings as the starter, but I'm not counting on it. Could have taken Devonta Freeman here as well, who would likely be the more popular pick with others, but I'm just not sure about the RB situation there. Freeman is the flashy play, but SJax is still there and last I checked Freeman was only 3rd or 4th on the depth chart in preseason.

My team karma pick. Back in the early years of the RIFC, I used to target Dante Hall as my namesake pick. Lately, it’s been DeAngelo Hall. My lucky number is 14 (as I was born on the 14th), this is the first pick of round 14, and I have no DB yet. Not much more to it than that – other than that Hall has produced reasonably well over the years. Probably worth more as a fantasy IDP than he is on the field. Will make some big plays, and will sometimes get burned.

I was targeting Morgan Burnett for this pick. After he fell off the board, I decided to stick to the DB (S) position and pick up Ward who I see as ranked similarly (but a bit lower). These past two picks were off of preset queues set about 8 picks in advance (well, the Riley pick was, this one I had two minutes to select between meetings and just picked the next best db)... If I had noticed the slow trickle of qb's off of the board I may have changed things up. But, I plan on keeping Matt Ryan h"ealthy, so I'm better off picking team starters at this point."

I'd really like to grab a backup QB here but I'm going to see what's available next turn as I also need a backup TE behind Gronk. I'm a littled limited on my TE choices due to bye weeks and like Kelce the best out of the remaining TEs. This may be a bit early on him, but there's a team without a TE at all, plenty that also need a backup, and a long time between my picks. I'll just grab my guy here and see what happens. Kelce has been compared to Gronk and could put up some pretty nice numbers. He has very little competition for targets in Kansas City.

Third of all he's extremely durable. Not that Peyton is a risk, but Eli will hold up all season and put up decent numbers if Peyton goes down.

I didn't really want to make this pick in the 14th but his name was creeping up toward the top of that ADP dropdown list in MFL (annoying) so I felt he was in danger of being hijacked at any time. Just a handcuff for Chris Johnson. Ivory showed last season that he can produce when in the starter role. I hate filling roster spots with handcuffs but I don't have enough RB depth to avoid it.

Anyway, he was pretty solid filling in for Cutler last year. Maybe it will work out.

14.10 Patrick Peterson, DB, ARI - This was a ho-hum pick for me. Peterson could represent good value IF he's seeing Punt Returns... but if he isn't, then I would have been safer taking a safefy later in the draft. It's worth a shot at this point in the draft though.

Last year I got Philip Rivers in the 15th round and he ended up outscoring my #1 QB. I find it important to have a strong QB #2 even if he ends up only filling in the bye week. Haven't yet drafted a WR4 Boykin has beaten out the rookie for the 3rd wide receiver position in Green Bay. They don't throw to their backs much or have a dominant tight end and run 3-wide a lot so he should get some work. 55 catches and 750 yards is a typical projection. If a WR goes out, he could do more.

In most drafts I tend to punt TE because the top ones tend to go before I am ready to draft them, and usually by the time the top 5 go off the board it's a pick-em. Tulloch is a solid LB, having at least 111 tackles each of the past 4 years. Last year he managed 135 tackles, including 93 of the solo variety.

Amendola suffered a groin injury in week 1 last season. The injury nagged him all year and he ended up missing 4 games. In spite of that, he still put up 633 yards and was second on the team in targets with 83. I wouldn't bet anyone cash that Amendola will make it through the season without missing any games, but it's clear that Brady trusts him as a target. He's more than capable of putting up some 100 yard games and should be a playable option for me a long as he is healthy. It's the 15th round so there is no risk here.

I set a queue for this pick before going to bed and kind of wish I had just let it go until I was able to get on to make the pick myself in the morning. I may have grabbed Geno Smith if I picked manually as I had him in my queue but not high enough. My backup QB slot is a major concern at this point but none of the available guys are really worth spending a pick on right now. Cutler's bye week cut out 2 of the better QB options available as well. So instead I end up with Mason Foster who likely would have fallen a bit more. He's got good scoring capability if he's playing nickle downs, as he wasn't last year but supposedly is this year.

Now trying to target backups at key positions. I need RB/QB. Guru already has 2 qb's, so I can look at RB first. I had been thinking of getting Donald Brown here. As a Colts fan, I saw some signs from him off-and-on, and maybe he would get a chance to excel with a better offensive line. However, in some brief research saw he was currently third on the depth chart. Greene, however, is currently first at Tennessee. Not sure how long that will last, but speaks to regular touches should I need to play my fourth RB.

Just adding some RB depth. Brown’s role is not yet clear, but Ryan Mathews has had trouble staying healthy, so opportunities are likely to present themselves sooner than later. Last year, Brown showed that he could have value if presented with a significant role. I also read that he may return kicks, which would be a first for him.

He’s also a UConn alum, which give’s him sentimental value for this Husky fan.

I've been monitoring his position battle with "undrafted" dude. If not for the position battle I would have targeted him several rounds earlier. Although the Packers haven't announced anything yet, it appears that Hyde will be a starter on defense, and he is listed at KR & PR on the team website (I think he may primarily return punts and only occasionally return kicks, but hard to tell). Last season he had a 12.3 average on punt returns.

I got some use out of him last season, and I think h"is move from CB to FS/dime CB should lead to more opportunities. Now I'd just like to hear an official announcement from the Packers that he is their starter. I figured he was on at least one other RIFC radar so I got antsy and pulled the trigger."

16.12 Spikes, Brandon BUF LB
After taking my first LB in round six, I haven’t added one since. Once the elites left the board, my interest diminished significantly. There are always a few names that slip through the cracks, which allows me to focus more on the offensive side of the ball. Brandon Spikes has every reason to be one of those diamonds in the rough. He produced very well on a per snap basis for the Patriots but too often was left on the sidelines for passing downs. Now that he is a Bill, Spikes is locked into a three-down role. Thanks to the injury to Kiko Alonso, he also has little competition for tackles. The situation is ripe for a breakout, so I hope he can take advantage.

Had they dropped one more round, I also would’ve considered any of Devont’a "Freeman, Mason Foster, Shonn Greene, Jonathan Stewart, Thomas Davis, and Bernard Pollard. All were nice adds 200 picks in."

17.03 Allen, Dwayne IND TE
This wasn’t an easy pick for me. I like a number of players here, and I’m not sure which (if any) will be available the next time around. Justin Houston is a stud rush LB, capable of averaging 10+ PPG. Adrian Clayborn and Michael Johnson are pretty much the last DL I consider worth drafting. The upside flier WRs have once again gained the favor of drafters, and Antrell Rolle is tempting at DB.

Then there is the sleeper TE I favor, Dwayne Allen. He put up a solid rookie season in 2012 and then got hurt last year. Tight ends frequently show growth during the early part of their careers, and I think Allen has as good a chance as any. He clearly has the trust of his coaches and QB in all aspects of football, so he should be on the field more than his classmate [undrafted].

Based on RIFC ADP, Allen is the most likely player to still be around next time, but I feel the dropoff at his position is more severe than the others, and the ADP sample size is too small to put much faith i"n it. Hence, Allen was the choice."

This is the part of the draft where I am starting to look at the team as a whole and what I need to fill it out. I think this is a reasonable gamble at this point. The Patriots expected Dobson to be their big play wide out last year but he was hampered by injuries. When he did play he managed to put up respectable numbers.

Dobson is one of the few down field threats on the Patriots. There's only so many " underneath " passes Brady can throw, he's got to go deep at some point.

Off season surgery limited him in training camp, but did manage to play in the final preseason game and managed 3 catches for 57 yds and a TD. Decent.

Hopefully he only sees action on Brees' bye week. Houston hosts Indy on Thursday night on week 6, and Fitzpatrick is a pretty consistent/conservative 80 passer rating type of QB. Hopefully I get 15 points from him come week 6 and that's the end of th"e story.

I kind of considered Everson Griffen here as my 2nd DL, and Toral took him just 5 picks after this."

18.12 Gostkowski, Stephen NEP PK
I am surprised that no kickers have gone yet in this draft. I know that it’s very easy to find a good kicker in the free agent pool, but that doesn’t mean that a top option is without value. Gostkowski has been the top kicker in 4 of his 8 NFL seasons, including each of the last two. I think that the value he offers here is higher than that of whatever DB or offensive flier I would take, especially given the talent drain that occurred between 17.03 and now (Houston, Britt, Roberts, and the TB DL guys to name a few). He won’t be on the board come round 20, so I might as well get ahead of the pack and take my kicker now.

I guess it is time to finally take a DB. Stevie Brown performed well in this role two years ago before tearing his ACL in the 2013 preseason. My only obvious mistake of the draft. I wanted Gostkowski here and he was #1 in my queue, but taken. Prater was #2 and added without even thinking about looking at his player page. My mistake and it cost me a pick in the draft. I've done this with ki"ckers before - a couple years ago I took a kicker who had gotten released the week before. The strategy now is to keep Prater and have two kickers through the first half of the season to see who shakes out."

19.09 Jones, James OAK WR
I added some WR depth here though Jones may eventually end up starting on most occasions. No longer catching the football from Rodgers, Jones may not get the opportunity to find the end zone that often. On the other hand, he might become one of the favorite targets of Schaub or even Carr, which could help improve his yardage total this year. Fantasy shark projects him to receive more than 1000 yards and if that is the case using the 19th pick on him is a steal.

Well, I guess it's time to finally take a QB. There are a few options available, none enticing. The top option has the same bye as Cutler so I'm passing on him. I'm grabbing Manziel here because he should be starting by the time I need another QB to start (week 9). I figure Manziel has as good a shot as the rest of the QBs remaining to put up decent numbers. Orakpo was LB #30 last year despite missing the last 1.5 games of the season. I expect him to perform at about this level again. Roman Harper has basically been a DB1 for his entire career. Now in his 9th season, he’s coming off an injury-marred down year, not to mention switching teams for the first time. There’s also a case of turf toe that he developed early in preseason. T"he Panthers don’t have the best history of fantasy production from their safeties, but they’ve also never had a player like Harper in the lineup. Here’s hoping 2014 marks a return to form. 21.07 Hughes, Jerry BUF DE
Hughes was a first rounder back in 2010 for the Colts but he was stuck behind Freeney and Mathis for a couple years, then switched to 3-4 OLB, then last year played both LB and DE. He only played about 50% of the team's snaps but had 10 sacks. Last year played mostly pass downs, either rushing the QB or dropping back in coverage. Buffalo has moved to a 4-3 and Hughes won't be a hybrid LB anymore. He is set to play DE on both pass and run downs (the majority of run downs anyway). On pass downs he will be rushing the QB rather than occasionally dropping back. All these factors make him a potential breakout IDP this season.

I also considered [undrafted"] to fill my backup LB slot, but I think Robinson has a better chance of hitting his upside projection."

22.13 Taylor, Stepfan ARI RB
A rather weak excuse for an Ellington handcuff, but we're pretty well down to #3 backs now.

22.14 Blue, Alfred HOU RB
Just taking a chance here, If Foster goes down Blue will see some play time. He's listed as the number two on the Texans official depth chart. I'm a little surprised he was still available really. Ehh it's wort a shot.

23.01 LaFell, Brandon NEP WR
I have read a few things about Brandon and Tom getting along well and that tom likes having a taller target at wide out. Well if any of that's true this could end up being a great pick. I probobly should have taken Roy Helu though.

Will be a passing-down back, and have real value if Morris goes out.

23.03 Asiata, Matt MIN RB
He may not be the most talented running back, but he’s the fairly clear backup to Adrian Peterson. As such, he has clear value to my team. Given my lack of depth at the position, an injury to one of my top two RBs is likely to be very painful. Having" AP’s handcuff will mitigate that downside at least slightly"

23.04 Clowney, Jadeveon HOU LB
This is purely a spec pick. Despite being the #1 player in the draft, pass rushers tend to have a longer learning curve than other positions. If Clowney somehow catches lightning in a bottle in his rookie season, it could be a good year.

23.05 Ted Ginn Jr, WR, ARI - Ginn was good for 9FP/game last year, here's hoping he can stay close to that load/production level.

I generally prefer DE's but McCoy probably ranks only second to Gino Atkins as an interior type. A reasonable pick in round 23

23.07 Brown, Bryce BUF RB
I have one slot left that I can draft an offensive player with. I think Brown is the actual RB to have if Spiller goes down, and from what I know of him he has enough talent to actually put up good fantasy numbers if given the chance. There are ome RB's out there who aren't worth owning even if they do get the starting gig. I don't think Brown is one of those. His career numbers are 190 for 878, 4.6 ypc, 6 TD.

23.08 Rodgers, Richard GBP TE
I need a backup for Camerons bye week. He may not be the TE to own in this offense but I figured I would give him a chance. I could be scrambling to the WW if this doesnt work out as Cameron is off early.

23.09 Murray, Latavius OAK RB
He is to be behind MJD and DMF in the pecking order at the start, but considering the health of the latter two could be a huge question mark he might end up getting much more time or even starting for Raiders. He is of course my late round flier here.

Todman is the No. 2 RB behind Gerhart for the Jaguars. I will probably keep him on my team for at least the first month or so to see if his role increases if/when Gerhart struggles.

Got a text that I had timed out on my previous pick and that I was up again. I remembered there was a safety I was looking at the other day. Rather than slow things down anymore, I simply went to the draft screen and picked the top available safety. We'll see how the Honey Badger does.

24.09 Elam, Matt BAL S
Once again, threw a bunch of names into a queue, and came up with Elam. His rookie season last year was decent, and supposedly he was playing out of position.

Moving to strong safety this year, I'm expecting Elam to make strides and improve on last years showing

24.10 Robbie Gould, PK, CHI - I could probably do better than Gould if I wanted to do the research, but I'm just following my gut that CHI should be scoring a lot of points this year, so I'm hoping he sees a lot of opportunities.

24.12 Thompkins, Kenbrell NEP WR
Though other names are being hyped more heavily in the New England receiving corps, Kenbrell Thompkins is the guy who has been starting throughout the preseason. Presumably, the targets will be spread around in this offense, but I figure I’ll give Thompkins at least one week to prove me wrong. Other names were certainly considered, but a sixth WR made the most sense from a roster construction standpoint.
