I am pleased to announce the 14 teams in the 2019 RIFC league.
Typically, I invite the top 6 teams from the RIFC, the top 3 from each of the AAA leagues, and the winner of the AA playoffs. For purposes of ranking teams in each league, the winner of the playoffs is assigned a rank of #1, and then the playoff seedings are used after that.
Since the AA playoff winner was as duplicate team (and already an invitee to the RIFC), I selected the #1 seed from the AA playoffs to advance from that league.
That list comprises 13 teams for a 14 team league. So that leaves one more team to select.
There was no clear cut way to decide between the "bubble" teams based on last year's regular season results. So I opted to choose the only one of those teams that won a playoff game.
Thus, here is the list of invited managers, all of whom have accepted:
RIFC returnees (6): IAC, youngroman, Guru, Philly Busters, Slackjawed Yokel, SwinganaMiss AAA#1 (4): Holt, twilson, Tree, Chucktaylors AAA#2 (3): Doug, Toral, Taxman AA (1): Da Bomb
Here are the next steps: 1. Discussion of possible rules changes. (I don't anticipate any, but maybe I'm forgetting some good ideas.) 2. Discussion of any other issues that should be resolved before the start of the draft. 3. Run the draft position selection process. (probably during the second week of August). 4. Draft (starting around August 23).
I have not yet set up the list of new managers at the league site. |

For RIFC leagues, the draft order is a “banzai” format, which means that it is a back-and-forth snake format with one important exception: the third round order is the same as the order for rounds 2 and 4. So, the order goes as follows:
Round 1: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,..13, 14 Round 2: 14, 13, 12, 11, … 2, 1 Round 3: 14, 13, 12, 11, … 2, 1 Round 4: 14, 13, 12, 11, … 2, 1 Round 5 and subsequent odd numbered rounds: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,..13, 14 Round 6 and subsequent even numbered rounds: 14, 13, 12, 11, … 2, 1
This means that if you have the overall #1 pick in the draft, you will pick last in each of round 2, 3, and 4. And if you have the last pick in round #1, you will pick first in each of rounds 2-4.
The order of our selections will be set by random draw, determined by myfantasyleague.com. The draft selection round will generally be untimed. However, if anyone takes more than 24 hours to make their selection, I’ll reserve the right to skip that selection and move on.
I will post the order for the draft selection round no later than Sunday.
If you know of any access issues over the coming week, please post in the thread. And if you want to leave any instructions in advance (e.g., take the closest available pick to #1), you may do that in the thread, or by sending me an email.
The draft selection round will take place in this forum thread.
I still expect to start the actual draft on August 24.

Our draft will start on Saturday morning, August 24. I will actually activate it on Friday evening, in case someone wants to get a jump.
The clock will be eventually be set at 4 hours per pick, with a pause from midnight to 8am ET. The clock will be turned on at the end of the first round, but no later than Monday morning.
In each of the past several years, the RIFC draft has taken 6-10 days. At that pace, we should be finished by Labor Day (Sept. 2) or earlier. Assume that we'll average three rounds per day. Early rounds tend to be a bit slower than the later rounds.
Starting two years ago, I implemented some additional time limits to attempt to coax habitually slow drafters into a better flow. I think it helped. Here is the framework:
We establish a point system. If you timeout (i.e., you don’t make your pick before your allotted time expires), you accumulate 2 points.
If you exceed three hours of clock time but don’t timeout (the clock will initially be set at 4 hours), you accumulate 1 point.
Points will only be assigned after the first round, which is generally an untimed round anyway.
If you accumulate 2 points in total (either one timeout or two close calls), your clock time is reduced to 3 hours per pick for the remainder of the draft. That means your next timeout would be at 3 hours.
If you accumulate 4 points in total, your clock is shortened to two hours. At 6 points, your clock is shortened to one hour. That’s the ultimate limit.
Commissioners will need to monitor this, and will have the discretion to defer penalties if they believe the draft is moving OK and the time delays haven’t been too aggravating (or if the offending drafter has a good story.) Commissioners will also need to enforce the shorter clocks, since the system won’t be able to handle different time limits for each manager.
Hopefully, by adding some incentives to avoid multiple lengthy delays, the penalties won’t have to be enforced. (I did have to enforce a few times last year.)
Starting in 2015, I made the following offer to all RIFC leagues. This adjustment applies only to players injured in preseason week #3. We'll "protect" a team who drafts a player before his week #3 game and who is injured in that game. If you are in that situation, you'll have a limited time to make a substitute pick - but only from the player pool still remaining.
So, for example, if Tim Tebow is drafted by Team X prior to his game on Aug 25, and Tebow is injured in that game, then Team X can jettison Tebow and substitute any other player who is still in the undrafted pool at the time of the jettison. This, however, must be done by the end of Monday, August 27.
While this obviously isn't complete insurance, it is designed to keep the draft moving during that first weekend. And it's certainly better than being stuck with an eventual free agent to replace an early draft pick. Hopefully, this situation will never come into play.

Here are some guidelines for executing your draft picks. (These are copied from prior year's threads. Please let me know if I have misspecified anything)
1. "My Draft List" - Under the "For Owners" menu (at the top), there is an item called My Draft List. You can think of this as your personal pre-ranking of players if you wish, although it has one important operational impact. If your 4-hour clock expires, then your pick will be automatically selected as the top name on your "My Draft List". Only if that list is empty will your pick be skipped. (More on this in a moment.)
2. "Pre-Draft Pick" list - You access this through "For owners->Draft" These are the equivalent of the Drafttime.com "queue", with several important distinctions: There is a separate list/queue for each round, and they do not carry over, and If there is a name in your queue, that player will be immediately selected when it is your turn to draft. The only way to turn off a round-specific queue is to empty it. Therefore, it is important to keep your queues empty unless you are sure that they should be used. If you expect to want to load & unload your queue frequently (similar to turning it on or off), then you should probably keep a list of players in "My Draft list", as you can quickly pull up that short list to add players to any queue.
Of course, if you have players in "My Draft List", then you are also subject to having those players selected if you should time-out. Typically, that shouldn't be a problem, as timing-out should be a rare occurrence.
If you want to keep players loaded in "My Draft List" and you don't want to risk the top name being selected automatically upon timeout, then I suggest putting a "placeholder" player at the top of your list - preferably someone who is retired, or injured, or clearly not a viable pick. We can come up with specific placeholder options, if needed. If you time-out and a placeholder player is automatically selected for you, then you can have the commish replace that player with a real pick when you are available.
Note that because queued picks are automatically processed, there is no role tantamount to a designated picker. As commissioner, I can enter a pick on anyone’s behalf. Other than that, you – or anyone else with access to your MFL password – will be the only one who can directly enter a pick.
If your pick times out and is skipped, only the commissioner can insert a pick afterwards. If this happens to you, please send your make-up pick to me by email or text message. You can post here as well - but do not rely on this thread as the primary means of communication for a make-up pick.If any of these instructions are unclear, please ask. And if anything is incorrect, please alert! |

Please finish up all rationales ASAP.
Blind bidding will occur this week on the same schedule as during the regular season. All unrostered player will be subject to blind bidding on Wednesday at 7pm ET. Beginning at 10pm ET, free agents may be added without bidding.
Players dropped during the blind bidding process (or thereafter) will be locked and subject to supplemental blind bidding on Thursdays at 7:30pm ET, and again on Sunday morning at 8am. These dropped players will be included in the first blind bidding to occur at least 24 hours after being dropped.

Weird. I'm not sure what happened but I spent at least an hour to set up three rounds of claims, the first rd had John Ross at $20. The 2nd and third rd had a guy that no one picked up but still didn't end up on my team. What did I do wrong? Is there a final submission button somewhere that I didn't see?

Holt[31] - I know I had mentioned to you that I might be willing to trade Brady a couple weeks ago, but with Mahomes' latest situation, I think I'd better hold on to the golden boy.
I feel pretty good about putting up 177 points for week #7 when Mahomes only contributed 7. Thankfully, I opted to start Chase Edmonds over David Johnson.

Yeah I looked at it a few times and there didn't seem to be anything that would help both of us. The closest thing that I thought made any sense was offering Kelce for Mahomes (with other players involved) but figured it was futile (especially considering Kelce's lack of TD production).
Btw it looks like Mahomes is already jogging. I'm impressed because I haven't gotten hurt in any football games recently and my knees swell up if I jog anywhere!

Thanx to Ju-ju and Heyward for pulling me through barring Wednesday stat changes) despite bad or unlucky lineup selection. I have found that picking two equal value QBs one right after the other only works if you start the right one.
Quite a year. First I beat 2 teams that had scored over 200 points the week before, now the top 2 teams in the league. Doubt I can keep this up.

Oof. Looks like I missed the last playoff spot by 1.14 points (for the whole season).
Thursday morning's stat correction could be interesting.
Reminder about the calendar for this week. 1. No add/drops or waiver claims are permitted until 3pm Tuesday. This allows for time to set the playoff brackets, and to lock out teams from making roster moves that are not in the championship playoffs.
2. Blind bidding is deferred until Thursday afternoon at 3pm. This allows for any stats corrections to be processed before bidding is processed.
3. Teams in the championship bracket will have additional BB$ added to their accounts. #1 seed gets $16, #8 seed gets $2.
4. Teams not alive in the championship bracket will not be allowed to make any add/drop moves for the remainder of the season.

Playoff brackets are now set.
Playoff team selection criteria: Top six teams in the W/L standings make the top bracket. The other two teams with the most points also advance. (Note that Holt nosed me out for the final playoff slot by 1.14 points. That could change depending on Thursday morning's stat corrections.)
Seeding: The top four teams in the regular standings are seeded 1-4. The next four seeds are determined by points.
Abilities: Teams no longer active in the championship bracket may not make add/drop moves. Their rosters are locked.
Custom waiver order: This is used as a tiebreaker for blind bidding. The #1 seed has the top priority, etc.
Blind bid $ adjustments: Teams seeded 1-8 each receive a blind bid $ adjustment. The #1 seed gets $16, the #2 seed gets $14, ... the #8 seed gets $2.
Consolation brackets: These are setup for the six teams not in the championship bracket. Since there are only 6 teams, the losing team with the most points in week #14 will also advance. Reseeding will be done if needed to avoid a duplicate pairing for the second playoff week.
Note that weekly blind bidding is now deferred until Thursday afternoon at 3pm ET. The purpose is to defer all add/drops until after scoring corrections are processed on Thursday morning. FCFS free agent add/drops are then available at 6pm ET. The league calendar is already setup for this schedule adjustment.
If anyone sees an apparent playoff setup error, please send me an email.

Yeah I managed to completely mishandle my team again. My potential points for the week were 169.3 and somehow I managed to set a lineup that put up 83.5 points. My entire bench outplayed my starters. Pretty recently (2 wks ago?) I was 2nd in the league in total points but that tumbled pretty fast. Now I'm within a stat correction of missing the playoffs. The way things are going I'm expecting it.

Holy cow!
I gained .50 for an extra assisted tackle from D. Leonard.
Holt lost 1.0 for a lost tackle from T. Edmunds
Net effect is that I overtook Holt in total points by .36 to claim the last playoff spot.

You've done this before, Guru. In R14. What was your record then when you won, 7-16 or something?
Good things happen to good people.
At least the notorious and blatant R14 Cheaters -- Nathan Marbaugh aka Swingandamiss, Doug -- were eliminated in the first round.
Either you or twiison would have been an honourable winner.
Congrats, Guru!
There's been so much cheating in 2019, in R14, in G20, that I know I'm not the only one who is losing his appetite for fantasy sports, at least in this forum. I hope you come back for one more year in baseball and football.

Hey notorious Quitter and Drama Queen, Alan G Stewart aka Toral... Pretty pathetic of you to perform your whining and accusations in front of people who aren't involved in RG14. It's funny that you had lost respect in Guru himself for being involved in the RG14 "scandal", but now in this forum you are praising his honor while calling only Doug and I cheaters.
For all those not involved...There was no cheating in RG14. The fact is, we all played by the rules. The rules haven't changed for years. Toral didn't like the rules, so he decided to raise up a big stink and quit in the middle of the draft. Obviously he is still bitter.
Congrats to Guru on the Championship!
