I know this is months in advance, but this was an issue last year as there were a number of Rumble results that we weren't happy with last year and while going throuh old threads I remembered we never settled this. I proposed a change, but since there wouldn't be another one for a year, we didn't talk about it very much.
Here's the Royal Rumble scoring results thread.
This was my proposal:
12 + (elimination rank [winning counts as being eliminated #30]) - (entrance rank) + (# of wrestlers eliminated) and also +40 for the winner
If we had used this formula for last year's RR, it would have produced a range of totals from 0 (for Goldust who was the 27th to enter, 15th to get eliminated and didn't manage to eliminate anyone) to 57 (for Brock, who entered 29th and won, eliminating 4 in the process). And I think those scores would have been much closer then what we used to representing the actual results of the rumble.
But our scoring perspectives have changed a bit since then, Here are what I perceive to be the relevant issues. 1. No wrestler should get 0 points for being in a PPV match. At the time we were still in the process of debating negative showings for a loss. We soon changed that and more recently closed the gap even further between winners and losers for Season 2. 2. Brock Lesner had a basicly low score for a RR champion, considering how many points a winner who had an enterance rank near the middle or begining of the event could score. Imagine if he'd entered 10th and eliminated 8 (reasonable, I think) and won: 12 + 30 - 10 + 8 + 40 = 80. Do we want even a thrilling a RR victory to be worth that much? Remember, the Rumble was not the main event last year.
A good tweak might be to give RR participants +25, instead of the +12 that regular PPV matches normally get, and also lower the win bonus to +20.
So here is my proposal: 25 + (elimination rank [winning = 50]) - (entrance rank) + (# of wrestlers eliminated) (remember the 'PPV Match + 12' would not apply, unless the wrestler is in another match)
Under this system, Goldust got 13 points for an appearance and Brock got 50, which like I said, is for what should be a reletively low scoring RR victory. The wrestler getting a push in my example above would still get a nice 73. |

BUTT That's six votes to switch from the format we used last year to this one. Not sure if that's enough to change it, but I hope so because the Rumble is tomorrow.
