Subject: Season 2 Waiver Thread

  Posted by: Mike D - Donor [23715270] Tue, Sep 09, 2003, 20:23

I have the current waiver order as:

1. Species
2. Sponge
3. Mike D
4. Goat Locker
5. MITH
6. mIST
7. Kev
8. Great One
9. Farn
10. wiggs
11. Tree
12. Adam H.

This is the result of reverse draft order, which was:

1. Adam H
2. Tree
3. Wiggs
4. Farn
5. Great One
6. Kev
7. mIST
8. MITH
9. Goatlocker
10. Mike D
11. Sponge
12. Species

It was briefly discussed by a few owners that a 24 hour period should be used instead of the old 48 hour period. Unless anyone strongly objects, it is now 24 hours. Waiver claims are still public and should be made in this thread.

One thing that was not always clear in year 1 was whether a wrestler could be claimed when they were involved in a pending waiver transaction. Typically, the response was that they could not be claimed until actually dropped. With a 24 hour period, that comes even quicker. Therefore, unless anyone strongly objects, no one can be claimed until they are in the "pool" after a 24 hour claim goes through.

Hold on. For Season 1 we didn't start up the waiver wire until a few weeks into the season. We then established the list in reverse-order of the standings at that time. I believe doing anything else would be changing the rules.

I am in strong support of changing the wait to 24 hours.

Looking back, I am mistaken. Here is the thread (from Jan 7th) that I was referrring to earlier. About half the league responded in support of Species, who suggested, Initial waivers could begin "X" weeks after we start our season and would be determined by inverse order of the standings at the time.

But upon further review, season 1 started with Raw on Jan 13, 2003. The first waiver claims were made in this thread on Jan 9th - the same day the draft ended and 4 days before the season actually started.

My mistake. Reverse order of the Season II draft sounds logical to me, difficult to say for sure how we did it last year, but I have to assume that was it. Sorry to make a stink.

To add a bit to the discussion, not that there seems to be any disagreement, but........

Starting waivers in an initial season as we did, in inverse order of standings, makes sense. But in subsequent seasons, especially in a case of a non-snake draft where the previous season's winners have a reasonably significant disadavantage, offering them the ability to have the first crack on the waiver wire just makes sense.

Many online keeper leagues do it this way. In the Rotogurupie Keeper League I play with Guru, I won the first year.....so I picked last in every round but had the first waiver pick afterwards.

Just a note about this waiver transaction. If we had gone with the secret waiver pickup, this would have caused 2 issues. First, like we discussed, I would have had to contact an outside source with my waiver claim because I was last in waiver priority.

Second, Although Bane did make an appearance at this week's Heat taping (might have been a dark match actually) I know that most of the league does not bother to check taping results, especially if they are able to watch RAW. It doesn't seem right that I could so easily scoop up two (Bane and Matt Morgan) of the top prospects in OVW almost secretly. These guys might not make a splash before Wrestlemania, but they are both huge and we know how Vince will always find ways to work big wrestlers into an angle before smaller guys.

Tree, surprised you had Nikita over Bane. I know that Nikita is supposed to be coming up soon, but a roster spot on a potential valet? Over a prospect like Bane? Who do you think will come up first, Morgan or Bane? I think Morgan has been in OVW longer and I think he worked a dark match on Heat or Velocity 5 or 6 weeks ago. Around that time some WWE heads had some good things to say about him when they visited OVW. I have to imagine they are itching to work Bane into an angle as Batista's brother.

Also, a reminder to post your new roster and the new waiver priority.

MITH - i'm not sure if you're arguing for, or against, the secret waiver claim. i'm not so sure i would have snagged up Bane if i hadn't seen you do it.

i drafted Nikita over Bane originally for 2 main reasons:

1. i have no other women on my squad.
2. Vince seems to give a big initial push to women when they first get on TV, sometimes even giving them the Strap. i was gonna hold on to her for that, then dump her.

i think Bane will come up quicker for 3 main reasons:

1. He's got more of a "unique" look. the goatee and the ink definitely make him standout.
2. He's got a little more experience than Morgan. Bane's been wrestling for a bit over a year now, and Morgan barely has six months under his strap.
3. Vince has got to have some concern with how some of his bigger men (and morgan is bigger, as opposed to muscular) have progressed over the years...Mark Henry has taken a looooooooooong time to develop, Nathan Jones looks like a bust, etc etc...

Morgan, apparently, is a lot bigger than i thought though - he's listed at 7 feet.

Even though that's the way it is in every other fantasy sport?

Some people always get wind of a diamond in the rough before others. Some are willing to take a chance and stash them on their bench.

Even though that's the way it is in every other fantasy sport?

Yes, for several reasons.

First, I wouldn't be surprised if almost half of our league has never heard of Matt Morgan. I also wouldn't be surprised if at least a few of our managers don't know who Travis Bane is. In any other league I would say that the manager who doesn't spend at least a few hours every week watching and reading news about the sport and go over game stats and intangible consideration deserves to do poorly.

But in this league, I think we have a really good blend of competition and leniency that allows for a more passive style of management than in other fantasy leagues I've been in. And I'm of the impression that most of the league likes it that way. That's one of the reasons I didn't fight very hard on keeper-change issue, even tho I felt (and still feel) that we ultimately came to the wrong decision there. Allowing a more private waiver system will help a few of us and ostracize the rest, and in my opinion make the league less fun for all.

Keeping it public may seem to allow for a more cutthroat style of play, but that's the tradeoff for a rule that forces everyone to have fair accessability to free agents.

Lenient play is not the only way that this league is different from oter leagues. In every other fantasy league I've played in, there are always free agents that will score points for you if you have someone go down with injury. There are no David Ortizes or Tim Salmons or Joe Randas sitting in the free agent pool waiting for your guy to go down with injury. You need a decent RBI OF in Yahoo baseball and someone just snatched up Salmon? No problem, grab Steve Finley or Jeromy Burnitz.

But in out league, the highest scoring free agents (thru wk 3) are Moolah (32 total points), Dawn Marie (17), Dreamer (15) and a tie between Spike Dudley and various valets at 12 points. None of them has much potential as a fairly productive mid-carder, even over a short period. And even if Arch Kincaid and John Walters haven't already reached the pinnacle of their careers as Velocity jobbers, neither has the potential over the next year or so that we see in Bane and Morgan.

I agree with everything you said. I still don't think the public v. private presents as big of an advantage as you do. If you claim Cade/Morgan/etc, and I haven't heard of them, I may look them up. I may not. Even after looking them up, I probably won't claim then. Just my 2 cents.

he's from Survivor. one of the best players ever, and certainly the most devious, sneaky, and evil.

every week he does various wrestling related things - he's done the ric flair strut and "wooooooooooo", and when they voted off the player named Andrew Savage, he did a Macho Man impersonation.

he's a dick, but he's quite entertaining...

Got it.

Interesting possible move by the WWE....and an even more interesting move by kev to burn the #1 waiver pick.

The #1 waiver pick kinda sucks in one way....it's a blessing if some surprise news hits and some old superstar comes out of nowhere to WWE TV, but in another sense it is like a curse, because "chances" you'd like to take on a rumor are more difficult because you're burning the #1 pick.

It is much easier to keep track of new acquisitions when people follow through on their transactions. Mist should have - and still should - post his new roster, the new waiver order and also made note of his pickup in the transaction thread.

Where are your new rosters posted? Where is the new waiver priority?

Not posting that stuff is exactly why wiggs and Gunz had no idea that Mist had picked up Teddy Long even though Gunz posted his claim in the very next post after Mist posted his.

something is screwy with mIST transaction of long. Farn and I both did searches on that and neither of us found anything. I dont understand what happened.

mine wasnt a waiver move therefore requires no new waiver wire order. The line up is in this thread post 52

for young gunz, his new line up is in 54 of the same thread, but he didnt post the new order, probably because he didnt know. Farn helped out by posting the new roster but must have forgot the new order so i will do it now

NEw waiver order:
1. Great One
2. Farn
3. wiggs
4. mIST
5. Tree
6. Species
7. Mike D

And since Mist never bother to set the new waiver wire, he should actually be at number 10 from the Teddy Long pickup, Gunz at 11 for the Dawn Marie pickup and you at 12 for the Hardy pickup.
