I thought I would start a seperate thread for the WSOP.
Most interesting tournament so far has to be the 50K HORSE event. Chip Reese taking it down...I think this tourney will garner almost as much prestige as the main event in coming years. |

Soe other noteable bracelet winners so far: NL Holdem 1K Allen Cunningham Omaha High-Low 8/OB 5K Winner Sam Farha Seven Card Stud 5K David Williams No-Limit Hold'em Short Handed 6/Table 2.5K Dutch Boyd 2006 Tournament of Champions Mike Sexton
Phil Hellmuth has been at 2 final tables with a chance at his 10th bracelet...he is in pretty good in the current 2.5K shorthanded tourney.
Team Full Tilt has like 5 or 6 bracelets already.
William Chen is the only two tourney winner thus far...seems nearly impossible to take down two tourneys in these huge fields.
Main event looks like 8K+ entrants and a 10 million first prize...
I think next year I am going and at least playing in a 1.5 or 2K event. am making so much money these days it seems like a small investment.
148 sessions so far this year with 121 wins and 27 losses...81.76% Generally my losing nights are slightly larger than my wins but at this % I do not mind.

Best coverage I have found is at www.cardplayer.com
The daily videos are especially good.
Also enjoying the daily "The Circuit" radio show that you can download. Some of the past shows are outstanding. Pros giving some great tips.

Bill Chen's got a book coming out at the end of this month so those wins are really good timing for him. :) I've read some of his stuff in the rec.games.poker archives and the guy is a genius.

I think that would be more amazing than winning the Main Event this year!
3 bracelets in his first ever WSOP. That would just be unreal. Of course Fischman had 2 in his first WSOP right? Or was he just young?

Fischman certainly wasn't a month past his 21st birthday...plus the fields are probably 50% larger...
The amazing thing to me is he has done this in all different games...Omaha H/L...NL Holdem...Shorthanded Holdem...and now 7 Stud 8 OB...he is now leading the tourney with the big stack and 33 players remain...
Hellmuth making a run at his 10th with 3 players left...he has the big stack with ~1.1 million...but other two players are at ~600K so still anyones tourney...

Madson takes 3rd in the 7Stud 8/OB...two firsts and two thirds...I guess that is ok for a first WSOP... ;-) They hinted he may be on The Circuit tomorrow. The Circuit can be downloaded daily at cardplayer.com...45 minute Sirius radio show with poker pros Joe Seebok, Gavin Smith, and Scott Huff...
In other news...the main event kicks off tomorrow...concludes Thurs 8/10. There is a rumor they may add a 5th day one and push everything back a day...that would put the final table on a Friday...will definitely pay for the PPV if it is on a Friday night.

27 left...3 legitimate pros...Allen Cunningham...Jeffrey Lisandro...Prahlad Friedman.
Prahlad is kind of short stacked...mostly known as an internet pro...but has a few big B&M tournament cashes...have watched him play online a lot (spirit rock, zwieg).
Cunningham is probably the most accomplished player and recognizeable. 4 WSOP bracelets...quiet but a very dangerous player.
Lissandro is a European pro...accomplished player...won a ciscuit event last year...a few cashes this year.
Kevin O'Donnell must be a decent player as he has 2 final tables in this years series and 3 other cashes.
David Einhorn has said he will donate all of his winnings to a charity.
A lot of the other have at least some tournament cashes.
Looking at a minimum of 500K payout at this point.
Final table Thursday...think I am going to spring for the PPV...

Great stuff to follow through the Cardplayer updates. I think Eric 'Rizen' Lynch is playing very well. Of the bog pots he's been involved in, I've only seen one pot where he was behind when the money went in. From the write up he appears to have made the mistake of slow playing AA and lost to 54o when a 4 hit the turn as the $$ went in. This knocked him down to $800K late yesterday. Last I checked he was back up around $2mil. I can't see the current standings from work.
Unless of course someone can post them here?

AA vs KK...probably nothing you can do but go broke at this point in the tournament...
Kevin O'Donnell Eliminated 21st ($494,797) Kevin O'Donnell raises to $180,000 under the gun and Allen Cunningham re-raises $450,000 more from the big blind. O'Donnell re-raises $1,000,000 more (now $1,630,000 total) and Cunningham pushes all-in, having O'Donnell covered. O'Donnell calls and shows KK, while Cunningham has the lead when he shows AA. The board comes QJ86Q and Cunningham rakes in the pot to eliminate O'Donnell. O'Donnell is eliminated in 21st place, earning him $494,797, while Cunningham's stack is up to $11,750,000.

supposedly against Navada gaming commission rules to show cards during the tournament...
Possibly in the future they would isolate the players and live audience...not allow anyone to leave during the final table and then they could show hole cards...
I am still finding it pretty interesting to see all the action...very different than a tape condensed version seeing all of the blind stealing. Very few hands are going to showdown.
Really interesting watching AC...he seems to play very tight but when he is in the pot he is very aggressive. Definitely dangerous player...everyone else doing a lot of calling.

Allen Cunningham loses 3 million to Binger. Binger gets lucky after going all-in and catches a K for an inside straight catch. AC had TPTK...
Binger then precedes to do donk off the won chips on the next hand when he calls Wasickas all-in with A9...Wasicka shows AJ and his hand holds up.

Well watched the whole flippin thing (5:30am)...gonna be a long day at work today...
My thoughts...the donk play of the night had to go to Lee who rereraises all-in with JJ after Golds limp/reraise...Lee was second in chips at the time...Gold calls quickly with QQ and takes an insurmountable chip lead 50 million+. When Lee went all-in I thought at worst he had KK. I was surprised to see Gold call so quickly with QQ if Lee has a bigger pair he is the new chip leader. It was an astonishingly bad play...Golds actions in the hand screamed big cards...Lee stated he read him as AK...ok that would have been the only hand he had a shot against and even if he had AK do you put your 2nd place chips at risk on a coin flip with 2 very shortstacks barely holding on and yourself in no immediate danger...cost himself at minimum a million dollars with that play.
While overall Gold played well he got very fortunate cards the entire night...he showed the willingness to make big calls with marginal hands and he just never ran into anything and if he did call when behind he made his draw. If someone could have got a little closer in chips they had a chance vs him...to me he seemed infinitely readable and basically would talk while others were in decision mode giving a lot of information to put him on a specific hand. Once he got over 50 million and the other players sitting with ~10 million or less it was just too big to overcome.
Did not stay up for Golds after interview but a lot of people were very happy with what he had to say so it sounds like he will be a good ambassador for poker. Congrats...

It sure seems that way - in the telecast and as you watched the updated on Cardplayer.com during the event itself. Just like when he flopped the straight and turned the straight flush - the guy with top pair checked it down because he was paranoid about Gold having him beat.
In watching Gold, while he does make decent plays, I too think (re: TRS' post 49) he gives away way too much information with his talk. Friedman blew it in not trusting his gut, although I suppose Gold gets an award for his 'reverse psychology' acting on that hand.

he gives away way too much information with his talk.
I think it is genius, myself. He's got everyone spellbound, he's playing maestro magnificently and he is doing it with both his play and his unorthodox banter. I'm sure he knows that if he was in a room of old pros, his act would bankrupt him fairly quickly. For this one tourney, however, he's not just playing big stack bully, he's playing God.
Man, he reminds me of Robert Downey Jr.

After 3 likeable winners in a row, I don't think Gold will garner the popularity or endorsements of the past winners. He's just not the guy you want as the face of poker. Add to that the fact that the perception is he is welching on a deal to split his winnings (which is how he got his entry fee from bodog and he's going to have atarget on him over the next year.
I also think he is very borderline out-of-line on his talk when there is multi-way pots. I might expect the tourney to tighten up some of that next year.
Regardless, I think he played his GREAT fortune well to maximize the hits he made to the field.

Most unlikeable winner since Helmuth. And at least Helmuth is entertaining. I thought his bluffs were generally instantly readable, and he kept his chip lead through a series of fortunes (QQ v JJ) and some stupidity, like his KJs call of Cunningham's 10/10 all in. At BEST he knows he's about 40% to win. I understand that big stack's duty is to through around chips and knock out the competition, but being a 20% to 45% underdog v a guy like Cunningham is basically asking to get beat in the end. I have a lot of respect for Johnny, and I'm not sure how he tolerates the guy.

Am I the only one who thinks Gold is a borderline Donkey? He made so many bad plays and called so many hands when he was way behind. There were probably 1000-2000 player who were eliminated on day 1 who played the same style as he played. There was another player who wore the visor upsidedown (I forget his name)who accumalted a bunch of chips and then Donkeyed them off making the same kinds of plays as Gold. The storyline could have just as easily been the same for Gold. Gold's lucky run of cards....hitting miracle flops and suckouts was the difference.
I will give Gold major props for his table banter inducing calls when he had the hand and folds when he was bluffing.

Dmitri Nobles.
And I agree with many of the observations. Great run of cards. Pulled off some good bluffs and yes it sure seemed like he got folds when he wanted folds and calls when he wanted calls, but overall I wasn't impressed.
Was it me, or did it not seem like he was behind THAT often?

Since when? I think most pros will tell you that the quickest way to not be big stack is to do just that. You apply pressure, and play smart. You let the short stacks beat up on each other, and let the blinds stimulate action. I'm not saying that you tighten up to the point that you turn coal into diamonds, but you don't "throw chips around" either trying to get lucky and knock players out.

Very few have had a run of cards like Gold...he never ran into tough spots at least for the last two days...always ahead...always hitting flops.

Sludge, let me clarify. I didn't mean recklessly throw around chips. Most, including pros, use the stack as an intimidation tool, where short stacks are relucantant to play/call heads up with something close to the nuts. Some are overly agressive (Nobles), and it just becomes everyone's source of a double up. From watching a lot of tournaments online, the most successful big stacks, IMO, are still tight, but very aggressive. Sitting back just lets the 3 small stacks knock each other around until there is 1 stack left which rivals you. By 'knocking people out' and 'throwing chips around' (with a variety of strong; not just AA, KK, AK, and QQ, or fold), they don't end up in a coin toss situation heads up.

I don't think I could have folded that straight-flush draw.
He had a shot to make a go of it for 1st, and pussed out for a chance at improving a mere mil.

Easier said than done. Afterwards, he said he put Gold on a higher flush draw which was totally plausible. I don't know what I would've done. I'd like to think I could put in in there with the straight flush draw realizing that 1st is worth a lot more than the 12 million dollars.

Anyone see the 2 episode HORSE final table? My jaw dropped watching Doyle fold QQ on a weak flop when he was min-raised by Chip Reese. Reese had flat called Doyle's PFR. Granted they have probably played 10K+ hands together over the years, but that was still pretty impressive.
This one will live on the TIVO for a while. This way I can remind myself how much I suck at this game....

with doyle vs chip...I would not 100% trust them...they have played literally 10s of 1000s of hours together and have run together forever...could have been soft playing each other...
