Will a split "racist" season save Survivor?

Risky business, but a very diverse group.

As a lover of the show i found this quite an intersting twist with that said i wish they had not done this, but when you are going on season 13 new ideas are hard to come by. I think it did not help when last seasons idea of hidden idol and island was all for nothing really as it was not used and really had little effect on the game.

I need to be on that show...maybe one day...kind of waiting a couple more years so I am not seen as a physical threat...lol.

I kind of like the idea. It'll probably be like last season where they stick in the 4 groups for 1 to 2 immunity challenges then combine into 2 teams.

I'd love to be on Survivor. Need to beef up my resume as I doubt I'm "interesting" enough. If you are under 30, you either have to be a beefcake or some very eccentric person to make it on a show like this.

i think that is one drawback of the show they do not get enough 'regular' people to many young people who usually have no personality.

The one thing I do not like about the show sometimes is there are not enough "players"...I want people on the show who are really out to win at all costs. People need to treat it more like a game and not like you are betraying friends etc...there really are few rules and people should be more open to do anything to win.

TRS yeah i agree with that there is way to much freindship and not enough playing i think that goes with whole thing of having too many young people on there. the older players seem more like they are 'players'.

This race split looks like a desperate ratings grabber, but the 4 tribes of 5 people each (White, Black, Asian, Latino) will likely merge to 3 tribes, then 2 within a few episodes. Just like survivor 12 did with the old man/young men/old woman/young woman splits.

But where do they go from here? What will they do for survivor 14 and beyond – here is my thought…

Survivor 14 – ‘Survivor Fire Island’ - Split tribes by ‘sexual orientation’ (gay men, straight men, gay women, straight women).

Survivor 15 – ‘Survivor Happy Hour’ – all singles: Split by hot women, ugly women, hot guys, ugly guys. Then let the booze flow so the contestants can’t tell the difference.

Survivor 16 – ‘Survivor DC’ – In time for the 2008 elections - split by political affiliation Democrats, Republican, Conservative, Liberals.

Survivor 17 – ‘Survivor Middle East‘ – Split by religion. (Catholics, Jews, Muslim, Buddhists), or go really crazy and split the Muslim into Shiites, and Sunnis, or better yet, have Mel Gibson participate.

The possibilities are endless.

Seriously, this whole segregation thing does not sit well with me, but as a Survivor fanatic, I'll tune in. At least this seasons contestants are more diverse, the other seasons always had limited themeselves to one or two token contestants of different race, ethnic background or orientation.

lmfao. The sad thing is JeffG, your mock suggestion for Season 14 has probably crossed the producer's minds. But instead of gay women, you have hot bisexual women as a ratings grabber. Guys LOVE bisexual chicks, but don't like "dikes" ;-)

And sorry - Season 15 has already been done on another network. It was called "Temptation Island" on Fox! lol

Hmmmmmm....I know it's early and it takes time to learn the personalities, but I was generally uninspired by last night's episode.

The racial thing is of some interest in a generalized sense, but I'm wondering if I'm the only one who noticed:

- The asian group was populated with 4 young, attractive, fit people + 1 hippie oldie

- The caucasian group had one 'older' dude, 1 beefcake, 2 hotties and one hippie/weird young chick

- The hispanic group had one overweight guy but 4 reasonably intelligent/fit people

Then.....

- The african-american group all seemed unattractive, and with the exception of Nate not very fit and on the wrong side of 30. I'd hate to add fuel to the fire, but was that the best they could do??

species, i did notice what you are talking about though i thought the african american tribe was just as balances as the other team out side of the guy they voted off who seemed kind of lazy. i thought they did a pretty good job of balanceing out the 4 tribes though i allways like to see when they have the old people out there it looked like they really tried to avoid any older people weak links this time makeing the show look more like big brother, never a good thing.

It'll be interesting to see how they combine. I'm hoping they do it after this next episode. The race thing was a nice gimmick to get people to start watching but having 4 small tribes leads to less interactions and less entertainment.

I pegged Sekou as the guy who would go to tribal, not get voted off, and one of the chicks would get voted off.

I have 2 entries in this thing, I thought i had them identical, and in my other league thats the only difference and I've only got about 100pts in there. Oops! I'll take it though!

The Asians were clearly the strongest tribe from their profiles. I picked Yul because I figured they could win the first couple of immunities. Could've easily picked the other strong guy on their tribe but got lucky with the Yul pick.

The perfect score bonus thing is pretty lame. 100 point bonus is huge.

It could work out for her, though, if she'll just shut up. The Caucasian group now has the numbers, 4-3 in their new tribe. She's sowing the discontent with Adam too early, I think. She should've held off on badmouthing Jonathon to Adam until she was sure the numbers would get her to the final five, at least.

I think Yul and Sundra are two wildcards. Yul is guaranteed to survive the first attempt to oust him since he has the (rather easily discovered) hidden immunity idol and Sundra is flying under the radar like Sandra did in Season 4(?).

C1-NRB.....Gotta disagree with you there about Sundra. If the merge does not happen next week and her side loses, she's a goner. Yul and Becky have an alliance and they'd be foolish to vote out their only consistent source of food. Now, if there is a merger, all bets are off.

Nevertheless, Candice's and Jonathan's mutiny decision will cost them greatly. How can you trust either person now? They've gotta go!

FWIW, I hope Yul wins it all!

I think Candice and Jonathan made a dumb move but it payed off.
I agree that Candice made a major blunder by bad-mouthing Jonathan too early.
She has someone in her hip pocket and she is going get him voted off?
She could have waited until they ser down to the final 5.

My 3 favorites to win are Ozzie, Nate and Yul.
Ozzie is a great competitor, Nate is funny as hell, and Yul is an all around nice guy.
Most of the women seem to have little personality and are trying to fly under the Radar.

I suppose the big news this year---besides the obvious racial division at the start of the year---is the fact that the jury will now consist of nine people instead of the usual seven. Why now?

Certainly, I much prefer nine to seven but I was just wondering if this will be just for this year or will it continue for the next few seasons as well. Anybody know?

Candace could've waited 1-2 votes and they would've been merged. She was not in danger of being voted off. It was completely illogical.

There are 11 left and 1 on the jury. I guess the jury is going to consist of 10 and possibly America voting if there is a tiebreak.

I'm rooting for Ozzy and Yul to win. Their best chance to survive post merge is going to try pick up the stranglers(Jenny and Rebecca). Of course, we all know they are on the outside of raro tribe alliance but do they know it?

yeah deserting the other tribe was a terrible mistake...especially with everyone here on out on the jury...even if either are lucky enough to make the final two...they have lost the jury most likely...unless of course their opponent has made even more enemies. Once you get down to individual it is not always bad to be on the outside looking in at the alliances as you can use your power as a swing vote to control the game a little.

Good episode -- loved Nate's diatribe too.

Jonathan's screwed. They'll use him for 1 more vote then get rid of his a$$ faster than you can say "immunity".

The Raro 'kids' don't deserve to be in power. Jonathan's totally right -- they're lazy and stupid. They don't think. Adam is more interested in getting into either of Parvati/Candice's pants. It was VERY interesting to watch the Aitu tribe observe the Raro guys when they had beer/wine at the feast.

Ozzy's the man.

Johnathan's problem is he can only play the hand that is delt to him.
He thought he was tight with Candice but she is lying to him.
If he told Yul he wouldnt switch he would be gone.
If he stuck with his new Raro "buddies" he is #5 in a five member alliance.
If he lied to Yul and voted for Yul then the idol would have been played and Nick would still be out and 4 Aitu mambers would have stopped at nothing to get rid of him.
If he didnt jump ship with Cancide he would still have been #5 in a five member alliance.
I dont really see that he has made a mistake and has actually played it pretty well.....sometimes the deck gets stacked against you and you have to play your bad cards as best you can.
At this point he has zero chance of winning the million.
He needs to understand this and figure out how he can win the 2nd place 100K.
He would be the odds on favorite for the #2 spot....as long as he can understands that he cant win the Mil and he makes himself "the player" everyone wants sitting next to them for the final vote.

All he had to do was lie to Aitu for this one vote. After Yul plays immunity and Nate gets the boot it would be 4-4. None of Raro would be switching so he'd still have the opportunity to flip. Or he could've just took his chances on the likely 4-4 tie in which Aitu most likely would've voted to boot Candace.

Now his only hope is to take out the rest of Aitu and hope the girls flip on Yul and Ozzy knowing that Jonathan is the only person they can beat in the finals.

If there's a Survival All-Stars 2, Johnathan will be on it. He's playing this game pretty well.

Yul's tribe won't betray him. Provided that Yul is sincere about taking John to the final two, it will be Yul that betrays the other members of their group, not Johnathan. Can't fault a scorpion for being a scorpion.

Johnathan could very well win this thing depending on how upset others get when Yul starts betraying people.

Jonathan set himself up pretty nicely for final 3. Assuming Sundra Ozzy Becky and Yul can trust jonathan to final 5. I think Yul will see Ozzy is too big a threat to carry any further and without an immunity win ozzy will be gone as becky and yul will carry jonathan along for his swing vote. Get rid of sundra next at 4. Then at 3 yul can take jonathan and a guaranteed win or becky and probably win. But if Becky wins immunity jonathan goes to final 2 and may just win if he can bs his way through the jury that he was a game player while becky just latched on to yul and cut his throat.

If it comes down to Becky-Yul-Jonathon and Becky gets the immunity she would go heart-over-head and keep Yul in the finals.

The best thing you can do in Survivor is align as the "nice guy" who secretly aligns with the "bad guy" and covertly protects him to the end. No one wants the "bad guy" to win it all, even if the "good guy" stuck it to you.

well becky may do that. I do not think it would be smart at all to take Yul to the finals. Unless Yul starts playing cut throat with Ozzy and Sundra she will lose 10-0 to the jury. She would have a good chance against Jonathan seeing that Jonathan has or will have to backstab everyone voted out. Hard to say what a person will do, i.e. Colby taking Tina, Ian bowing out for respect, Rafe allowing danny out of her promise to the finals. So I should say if becky is smart and wins final immunity she will take Jonathan. If she isnt, she will finish with 100,000.

I love the flip betrayal vote especially when the alliance that thinks they have the numbers is filled with a bunch of morons. The shock cracks me up...

Johnathon is playing about as well as he can...he has little to no chance if he makes the final two but if he does not flip flop like he has he would have been voted off much sooner...everyone he has entered into an alliance with has done it with the intention of taking him out when they got the opportunity. Once you get down to low numbers in the game you really gain the power from being the swing vote.

I like this show a lot better when there are players like Johnathon who are playing the game and not letting morals enter into the game...play cutthroat...it is just a game...it is not life.

I agree TRS.
I call the final vote episode the:
"No fair you lied to me and voted my azz off before I could lie to you and vote your azz off" episode.
It's SURVIVOR people.
You cant take your 5 "alliance" teammates to the final 2.
You will need to lie to at least 1 and probably all 3 of them.
You have to lie and expect to be lied to.
Quit trying to bring your "real life" morals into a game.
You can still be the most moral person and be a liar on survivor.

For the final two that would be my exact strategy going into it if I was Johnathon...now is the time to be honest..."yep I lied to you...yep I backstabbed you...I was playing the game...I was outwitting...outplaying...outlasting" You hope people can understand that it is all part of the game...but in the end people carry too much of a grudge and had their feelings hurt...boohoo...I would much more respect someone who was honest and still not trying to BS me all the way to the end...both final players certainly had to do their share of lying...it amazes me that people are willing to vote for the person that is still blowing smoke up their ass...

I saw Nate on a program were his older brother is the host. Nate was pluggin the final episode and talking how he made peace with Johnathan, but really gave it to him when he got the chance so people should watch the final episode.

West Coast Viewers....please note: SPOILER AHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!

OH MY GAWD!!!!!!!!!!!!! What are these wannabees thinking????? Voting off Johnathan now??? I understand the whole get-rid-of-the-most-irritating-player-on-the-island scheme and whatnot but certainly if you want to be a position where you could tip the scales in your favor in order to garner 1 million dollars, wouldn't you keep the most hated man IN the game so that it would guarantee your victory???

Unbelievable! Naturally, the Wizard and Yul will both think that Adam can be tossed pretty easily next week but I think they blew a great opportunity to do it now. It wouldn't surprise me a bit to see tables turn once again and this time for the dominant Wizard to bite the dust now. What would it have hurt to keep Jonathan around??? I'm just amazed and how "uncerebral" some of these people are.

By the way, FWIW, any respect I had for Yul and the Wizard totally disappeared the moment they came up with the scheme to hide food from Adam and Parvatti. That's just wrong!

The show just got a whole lot less interesting. With Johnathan, Yul had someone who would be loyal going forward. It seems that in every season of Survivor the dominant tribe makes a mistake and it turns the tables of the game. It just happened for this season.

Not very smart.
Even if the plan was to vote him off....you could have done it next week.
Vote Adam off now...then see about Jonathan.
Yul not thinking.
He will be voted off the second the compass becomes worthless.

How is it wrong to hide the food that you collected?
While you are out working to get the food Adam is resting up for challenges and then helping to eat it to keep himself strong.

It is just another example of how terribly people play this game. The one thing I really hate about this show is people do not play the game...so many people want to be lovey dovey...be nice...don't hurt others feelings...it is a flippin game...go out and win it. Every year it seems that they have maybe 2-3 people who play the game cutthroat and then a buch of people out for an experience and to make friends. Bleh...give me a cast full of players.

I would love just one season of Survivor where you have all people who understand it is a game, and no one can be trusted. Then you would not have to worry about these artificial 'twists and turns' that they are always hyping. Too many final tribal councils become the jury pontificating to the finalists about integrity, and I am always amazed how they do not get the fact it is a game.

If someone bluffs in poker, isn't it similar.

See the December 11 issue of TV Guide for a major spoiler on the final 2. Supposedly the players don't know about it at this point, but it makes some sense to get rid of Johnathan now. Regardless it makes great sense for Yul. He pleases Adam, Candice, and Parvati by getting rid of Johnny boy, which will help him when they are on the jury. If things go Yul's way, Adam and Parvati will be gone soon anyway, so why not throw them a bone and possibly earn their votes?

Especially when given the opportunity and numbers, those jury members would have done the same exact thing had they thought of it first.

The jury blatherings to me just stink of hypocrisy; as if these people have never lied to anyone before.

Taped it and just watched it tonight.
I see Balrog's point about Yul pleasing Parvati, Candice, and Adam. I couldn't read Yul's vote, so I assume it was Jonathon. I'm surprised he got cut. Maybe he was just too cocky.

What I don't understand is why no one ever plays a "throw-away" vote. When the vote will be unanimous, why not write down "Parvati" since she's next to go anyway or "Yul" since he won't be going, either? Then you could tell Jonathon that you didn't vote him off.

Yul is slick. He always knows the right thing to say to anyone in any situation.

Not surprised by Parvati's dismissal but just to see how much Ozzy is dominating the games is insane. Obviously, Sundra and Becky have no business winning this year....which may be exactly why one of them will! :)

Certainly, for them to have even a sniff of a million dollars, it would have been best for them to have teamed up with Parvati and wiped out the men but you can't blame them for sticking with what got them this far in the game.

Meanwhile, Adam's toast and he knows it. I suspect he goes in the next tribal council. If I'm not mistaken, then with Yul in the Final Four, his immunity idol will no longer be valid. Is that correct? I think the girls will then team up and vote out whichever man doesn't win that challenge. That'd probably be Yul.

Having said all this it looks to me that Ozzy will be in the final three with Becky and Sundra. If so, I can't see anybody NOT given Ozzy his due----the Survivor championship! Thoughts?

Becky and Sundra only chance to win is if one of them gets lucky in the final immunity and picks the other to go with them or if they get smart and team up with Adam next vote.

I'm guessing Sundra's gone next. The final immunity challenge is always a balance/endurance thing. As we saw last night, Adam can't stand on a stationary board for 10 seconds so why not take him that far. Ozzy will in all likelihood win immunity again. If so, Sundra's gone. If not, Ozzy.

I think the Immunity that Yul has is good through the final 4.
When they are down to 3 then it becomes invalid.
I gotta think that that Ozzy is the favorite.
I just dont see him losing a challenge.

The one problem Ozzy could face is if they have an immunity challenge where you are shooting the other persons target or making a choice to cut another persons rope trivia challenge type thing...one of the challenges where they can team up against someone. I think if they get an opportunity to vote him out they will take the opportunity.

That being said I think he probably is the most dominant of any player I have seen in challenges.

Terry.

Tom and Terry had superior 'mental' game than Ozzy....although perhaps Ozzy's "loner" and flying under the radar in a strategical (vs. physical) sense is masking his true game.

I'd have to imagine Yul/Becky/Sundra getting rid of Ozzy the first chance they get.....IF they get the chance!

Yul, but don't be surprised if one of the Girls doesn't sneak off with it as we've seen before.

Of course, none of us will see the start of it, since we'll still be watching my Chargers beat KC.

it does seem a little odd that Survivor is going up against a big NFL game. It seems like they usually avoid that for their Sunday finale's.

Gotta love tivo :)

has anyone heard anything about the jury having 10 votes?
Seems like there needs to be some sort of a tiebreaker.
Unless the plan is to have 3 in the final 3 with 9 voting.

something is definitely different, right now there's 5 people still alive. Usually in the final episode, there's 4 I think. I have a feeling the final vote is gonna be amongst 3 people.

Two with the most votes will go to get it to three and then they'll take it to two.

Just a thought, but works.

Ya never know with them trying to change it up.

Only 9 on the Jury.

Because the big twist is three finalists.
Not the 2 we've always seen.

Wow.

"Big money! It's the season finale, and you know what that means: someone's going home $1 million richer (OK, maybe $500,000 richer after taxes). Tonight, the three (yes, that's new) finalists are grilled by the jury members and then host Jeff Probst will announce the winner. With nine jury members, there's a possibility of a three-way tie
Who'll it be? The online betting site, bodog.com, shows Ozzy and Becky leading the pack. But Yul's been puppetmastering the game from the beginning. However it ends up, check back here the day after the finale for an interview with the winner! -- Geoff Bennett"

When will contestants learn that physical dominance doesn't win Survivor?

It's "Outwit Outplay Outlast" not "Outmuscle"

threespleens- The most dominating Survivor in history was Colby from season 2: Australia. He never lost an individual reward or an individual immunity. His mistake was staying loyal to Tina rather than taking Keith (a lesser heel from that season) to the finals.

Boxman- As i'm sure you've seen by now, the car was via internet vote. And the "Car Curse" lives on.

Congrats to Yul on his Survivor victory. I suppose the one thing that didn't come out in the reunion show which I thought that should have was the way Yul used the hidden Idol to keep him from getting any votes along the way thereby creating the false impression that his "smarts" got him as far as it did.

Let's face it: If Yul didn't have the Idol, there's no way he wouldn't have been voted out in say 6th or 7th place. His smarts didn't win the game---his deception of using the Idol to prevent anybody from actually making him use it by writing his name down and putting him in the majority of votes---that was the ballgame folks. Those people were idiots for NOT making him use it when was first apparent to all that he had it. Why let him keep it in order to protect himself later? That was just foolish IMHO.

Other than that, I still can't believe that Ozzy didn't win. Was his overpowering physical dominance such a detriment? Who did he backstab? Who did he deceive? Who did he flat out lie to? Yes, Yul was somewhat honest in his portrayal that he did deceive and did try to sway the jury with his comments. But Ozzy did none of the sort with any of the jury members. Yet Yul was still rewarded with the victory. Unbelievable!

As far as Becky was concerned----Thank God she didn't even garner one vote. What a useless ploy it was to have a three person finale instead of two. In hindsight, we can now see that if, like previous years, there was an immunity challenge for the final two, Ozzy probably would have won and then selected Becky to face him in the final. Wonder who would've won then?

In summary, in spite of my obvious slant toward who I thought deserved to win, I sincerely enjoyed this edition of Survivor! I hope one day it'll come out on DVD. I can only hope that Survivor: Fiji is close to this entertaining.

Survivor 14 will take place in Fiji. Teasers from tonights final episode include: 2 immunity idols hidden on exile island; 19 contestants; tribal split has one living in 'luxury' and one in very stark conditions; also promised another diverse group of contestants. They also had a tease that one contestants controversial sacrifice in season 14 is guaranteed to have America talking.

There was a military coup in Fiji while the show was in production.

I think that this was by far one of the best survivors ever.
The best part was that there want all the crying and bitching about getting backstabed that have ruined the other final jury pontifications.
I was pulling for Ozzy but also happy that Yul won.
I dont think that if Becky won it would have been all that bad either.
Lets face it she did what she had to do with what she had to work with.
She wasnt capable of dominating in the physical challeneges. (None of the so-called men were either.....other than Ozzy)
She was as much a part of the strategies that Yul employed as Yul was.
She outplayed and outsmarted 17 other survivors.

Yul deserved the win, but I can't believe Ozzy didn't even mention the idol during the final tribal council. I figured he would have pointed out, as James Bond said, that Yul only won because he had the idol and that would have swayed the vote to Ozzy. But Yul did use that idol optimally to get votes, so...

I think the best player won. Yul's skill of 'playing' the idol to his advantage was masterstroke.

The best part of the final tribal was the way Candice tried to pigeonhole Yul into a "Yes or no" answer.....and he still couldn't help himself trying to spin his answer! Just say Yes because A - it was honest; and B - it's what she wanted to hear!

First of all, was it just me or did Ozzy look like he gained quite a bit of weight bet/ the final tribal council and the reunion show?

Secondly, I agree 100% with Bond, Ozzy should have won. There is no way that Yul and Becky would have even been there had it not been for Ozzy. Remember that when they were 4 against 8, Ozzy's dominance in those immunity challenges made it possible for them to stay 4.

Also, if Yul did not have the idol, he would have been gone a while ago as Bond stated...

Becky was definitely a waste and I was very happy with her not getting a single vote. The 1.5 hours + to make a fire even with matches was a joke and proved that she didn't do much more than ride Yul's coattails...

You kind of wonder whether they had always planned the three person final or if once they saw either guy was going to take Becky to the final vote and it would likely be unanimous for either Yul or Ozzy vs Becky...that they decided lets bring all 3 of them. I guess I can't fault them because that is definitely the final I wanted to see Yul vs Ozzy.

I have to give Yul credit...he did very well answering the jury questions...I guess I expected that since he is a lawyer. I would put him near the top as far as historical jury performance.

I think that was the plan when they announced Brad as the first jury member.
Since there were still 11 players left in the game, a final 2 would have made a 10 member jury.
