The last movie thread was so big that I figured we could start another one.

Saw 3 was a lot more gore and not as good as the other two IMO.

I really liked the documentary, "This Film is Not Yet Rated." If you ever wonder how they rate movies and the politics of it, you'll really want to check this out. They even hired a private detective to uncover who the secret members are who rate them. The MPAA is a joke.

I'm getting tired of Netflix response time lately. Took both movies to the post office to be sure I'd have new movies on Friday and they did not show them arriving today as they undoubtedly did. This has been happening more and more frequently and I'm strongly considering switching to blockbuster as you can simply drop them off at a store (instead of a post office) and they instantly send you the new movies the next business day.

Not only can you drop them off at BB, you get a free DVD rental with each online rental you bring into the store. Plus, you get a free in-store rental each month good for a movie of game.

I have not had problems with Netflix but the commercial for BB shows that you can take them to the store and pick out new movies at the store !!! Unfortunally the BB next to me closed down recently.

Had a problem recently with returned movies to Netflix in Austin. However, I think it had to do with not only a nasty ice storm, but that our local post office really sucks. We shall see. I returned a movie yesterday and hopefully we will have a new movie by Saturday.

Our post office here (just outside of Killeen) is less than expedient. It should not take 12 days for a small padded envelope to get from El Paso to Killen. I've had priority mail held up at the bulk mail center in Waco as well.

Blockbuster is a great situation right now, I got a feeling this current offer is so generous because Blockbuster is flexing their muscle cause they want to drive Netflix out of business. Then they'll raise it to 20 bucks a month with no in-store returns.

You also get a free Video Game per month with Blockbuster.

My friend sent me this link a couple days ago:
http://www.flixster.com/

What I like about it is that you go in and rate movies that you've watched and then it can make recommendations for similar movies.

There are several other things you can do like review movies, read movie reviews from others, and play trivia. When you initially sign up, you have the option to rate a specific group of movies to get a MCT score. You don't have to rate these movies, but I have found it helpful when reading reviews from other people and judging it based on our "compatibility" score.

I've added a few movies to my list because of this site and am sure I will add some more down the road.

I just watched Stay. It's a 2005 film with Ryan Gosling, Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts. I looked in the old thread to see if anyone had commented on it and they hadn't. It falls into the category of the old thread because it was a movie that surprised me at the end. Great acting, visuals, and editing. If you like movies that leave the ending open for interpretation, this is one I recommend. If you have HBO it's probably scheduled to come on again a dozen more times in the near future.

I watched the Illusionist last week. Thought it was highly predictable. Entertaining, but if you were even remotely watching the movie, you could see how everything was being laid out.

Speaking of Edward Norton, I rented 25th Hour yesterday. Just got done watching it. Excellent flick. Its a Spike Lee Joint, also starring Rosario Dawson...well, thats enough for me...and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Interesting that Tobey Maguire was one of the producers.

To equalize picking a good movie, we also rented Idiocracy. I'd like my $4 bucks and 1 1/2 hours back please. Was giving Mike Judge the benefit of the doubt for creating Office Space, but this was just plain bad. Yes, I understand what he was attempting to do, but man...

From a week or two ago, Bubba Ho-tep. All I need to say is its a Bruce Campbell flick. If you love him, its great. If you don't...whats your problem? And yes, the are currently making a sequel...well, prequel.

Anyone hear of a DVD release date for Rocky Balboa?

Re: 4

I am unclear on the BlockBuster deal for their store front discs. I know you can take your movie back there any time they are open and you will immediately get a new movie sent to you and not have to wait for you to mail it in. But I am unclear if you get a replacement for that as well or just once per month. My thinking is that you can only get a movie free once per month and then you have to return it or subject to late fees. It's still a good deal as there is one really close and I'll often drop a movie off at the Post Office after receiving one in the mail on say Sat. morning so I get a new release sent out on Monday so I get it on Tuesday. This way I can simply take (a) watched movie(s) in on Sunday evening and still get a new release in the mail on Tuesday.

We got rid of all of our premium channels a year ago and got Netflix--saved a ton of money but I think BB is the better way to go. I can't dump Netflix for 3 more weeks, so just want to be ready when my due date comes to switch over. Really am tired of Netflix not marking my movies as returned when they have arrived--or worse they mark it as returned but take an extra day to send one out. The BB store deal takes a lot of planning out of the mix to get new releases. And if a new release is out of supply temporarily online, I can use the coupon to pick it up in-store for free. Since they are the same price--seems like a bargain. Also, I believe whatever plan you sign up for--you are grandfathered even if they change the terms in hte future. Also like how BB lets you rate it half stars instead of the simle full stars from 1-5 that Netflix does.

This is what I do. I get 3 movies mailed to me from BB. I watch them and then take them in-store. Grab 3 movies off the shelf, and hand them, plus the 3 sealed online rentals to the clerk. The clerk scans your BB card, the online rentals and the 'new' rentals. You get these in-store rentals for free, they mail the online rentals back for you and send the next 3 in your Queue. I've found that BB's delivery is a little slower than Netflix, but when I'm actually getting 6 at a time, I don't care. I also use the 1 free in-store rental on video games for my sons. :)

REF - google 'netflix throttling' and you'll see that it's common practice of Netflix to 'hold back' your next rental

Another thing you can do with both companies is cancel it for awhile and then start it up again. We are caught up on a lot of the recent movies and are busy until June, so we are not members right now. It costs nothing. At Blockbuster you have 10 days to turn them in after you cancel. You have to look at your account and cancel it the last day before they charge you for another month. There are no partial months. And ,if you're really a cheapskate like me , arrange it a few days ahead so you receive 3 movies right before cancelling.

I just watched Sherrybaby (Excellent movie). I have seen maybe 3-5 movies with Maggie Gylenhall and she seems to get naked in pretty much every one of them. Almost like it's stipulated in her contract. Anyway I was wondering what it must be like for her parents when they go the the premiers. Do they have to turn away ? Thats a lot of turning away in her movies.

My favorite movie of the year was BABEL. Part way thru, was thinking that it was kinda difficult to watch/enjoy. But, the movie actually turned out to be uplifting - just a masterpiece in movie making. Thing that gets to me is hearing people who have admitedly not seen it discuss this movie. Have heard many of them give a synopsis of the plot, and then say that there was no way they would see the movie, or enjoy it. Talk about being closed minded.

Close second was BLOOD DIAMOND. Splendid acting, and found myself really caring about the major characters.

Next was LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE. A joy to experience.

Understood, but if you like the Matrix movies, The Animatrix is worth a look. It's an animated compilation of short stories that act as a prologue to The Matrix and occur within the Matrix movies themselves.

Widdle, NP, to each their own. Sherrybaby about a woman who gets out of prison and on probation and tries to reunite with her young daughter who really didn't even know her. It shows her struggling trying to get a relationship back with her while being a sex fiend and fighting her drug habit which got her busted in the first place. Just really weird. Her father obviously molested Sherry and still feels her up. It's a low budget IFC film with not the best acting in the world. I've seen worse, just didn't do anything for me.

Inside Man was decent, but not as good as I thought it would be. I think you will like it but not love it. I liked it more than the wife. She called everything that was going to happen correctly. I like Denzel's acting a lot and she doesn't.

legge, exactly what I said! I still don't see what the big fuss is about this movie. It's up for these awards and everything. But the last--let's say 15 mins or so was hilarious. IT turned if from being not very good IMM to decent.

Watched Flags of Our Fathers. Not a bad movie, but wasn't as good as I expected. Guess wasn't suer what to expect, but it gotthe hype and Eastwood directed it. It was fine. I just thought it was going to be very good. Had many flahbacks and when it goes back and forth, it takes some time to figure out where you are each time.

Yeah, I plan on picking up The Departed on Blu Ray tomorrow (assuming the 12-16" of snow that we're supposed to get is a farce...). I meant to see it in the theater, but never got around to it.

I got a PS3 a couple of weeks ago, and so far have only watched one blu-ray disc. It was Crank which was actually shot in HD video, and the picture was amazing. Not only blowing away standard definition DVD's but a noticeable improvement over HD through my cable. Netflix was nice in that once I told them I had a BD player, they automatically replaced all the available titles in my queue.

I have Blu Ray via my PS3 and HD-DVD via the add-on drive to my XBox 360 so I've seen movies in both formats. So far nothing comes close to King Kong on HD-DVD. I really like the potential of Blu Ray though. I haven't had time to watch an eye candy movie like King Kong on Blu Ray yet, but I would imagine it's lights out.

A comment I heard repeated was, "They sure marketed that differently than what it was about."

If one dimension on the scale to measure the quality of a movie is Emotional Response then it scores very highly. Technically, there are a few holes.

I'm scared to admit this one...

i was flipping around the other day and I saw a movie on showtime starring and written by Jenny McCarthy. I've always been a pretty big fan, she's actually really funny.

Anyways, the movie is called Dirty Love. Its got her & Carmen Elektra (trying to play a girl who thinks she's black) its also got the kid from American Pie - the pale one? Kathy Griffin has an appearance. Sum41 has an appearance.

But, it was pretty funny, in a stupid funny kinda way.

Hey, I like Jenny McCarthy too. She is funny and seems like a chick that can hang out with the guys and not be, well...a chick.

from askmen.com
We chose her because each one of us has at one point typed in Jenny McCarthy on a search engine. You can't deny that she is easy to look... and stare at.

If you have ever seen MTV's Singled Out, you will agree that her charisma, snappy banter, and amusing facial expressions really made the show half decent. This former Play.boy centerfold is more than a bunny; she has gotten the attention of many Hollywood producers, and was inundated by proposals for game shows, talk shows, and sitcoms.

I just watched John Tucker Must Die (pretty funny) and she played the hot mom in the movie. She is still hot.

The Prestiege is good but not in the same class as The Departed. I would recommend it though. Man of the year had it's funny parts. I'd recommend it too. It's not as good as The Prestiege, but has some good funny parts. Prestiege is way too long, but is still good. Just pay attention.

I liked the Prestiege and Illusionist. But I thought with all the talk that the Prestiege was going to be in the same genre as The Departed. Whereas it was in the same genre as The Illusionist. Heck, I didn't know what a prestiege was before this! :) The Prestiege is nearly 2.5 hours though and it isn't always easy to stay focused.

I loved The Departed--just didn't like the ending real well. It was ok though. I like The Prestiege a tick more than the Illusionist, but I recommend them both. The Prestiege is jsut really long.

katie, Babel had good reviews and high ratings, but I just didn't get into it at all. I got it. I just didn't like it. Hope you like it better than me.

I finally got around to watching The Departed on Blu Ray. It was very good. The cast was really deep. I figured the actual ending would happen the way it did, but not the deaths that led up to the very end. I don't know why because the movies are different, but The Departed reminds me of Heat for some reason. Maybe because of the excellent cast.

I definitely recommend it. Next up is Man of the Year, The Prestige and Flags Of Our Fathers.

The picture on Blu Ray was outstanding. I don't know why or how it works, but the sound on Blu Ray is better than the sound on HD-DVD so far. To be fair, I've seen more Blu Ray movies though.

Box...absolutely we will go see it. Actually will go to the theater for once! Looks hilarious and a great cast.

J, I watched Dirty Love and laughed quite a bit. Jenny McCarthy is funny and should do more funny movies. I can't believe it won all those Raspberry's. It's a stupid comedy. Those awards should be for movies that are trying to be serious. The only one I wouldn't argue, though, would be Worst Supporting Actress because Carmen Elektra's character was just dumb.

Stranger Than Fiction was...well...the title says it all. Listed as a comedy, but more of a drama really. Just weird, hard to wrap your mind around at times, but very simple if that makes sense. It was ok. Don't give up on it, but still not going to get a huge payoff. Hard to watch a Will Farrell movie when he's not making you laugh all the time. Finally a movie where Maggie Gyllenhaal doesn't get naked. ;)

Long Way 'Round

First saw this on BBC a couple years ago, then katie got it for me.

Ewan McGregor (Obi Wahn) and Charley Boorman, rode their motorcycles east from London across Russia, Mongolia, Kazhakstan, Siberia, Alaska, Canada and the US to NYC.

WELL worth watching. (and IMHO, owning a copy.) I'd love to duplicate their trip, but.....

Man Of The Year = Ick. Not very funny at all. Highly disappointing.

The Prestige was excellent. I love good twists and Scarlett Johanson. It was well worth the time.

I saw a companion piece to The Blair Witch Project on Comcast OnDemand for free. It's called The Burkittsville 7. It was about 40 minutes long and considering that it was free, it was fine. I wouldn't call your best friends and relatives over for it, but if you like that franchise it's worth a look.

Finally saw The Departed. Agree with everyone - the last 10 minutes take away from what is one of the best movies I have ever seen.

Minor Spoiler
There was a simple answer to this. When they're both up on the roof (the second time), just have the therapist come out and shoot them both. Then comes the curtain. That's the poetic ending we needed and the one angle that never really got cleared up, just referenced. And it ends the story, since nobody else knows the truth.
Minor Spoiler End

The Departed was perhaps Scorcese's 6th best film. I am thrilled that he finally won, but it seems weird that he won for a film that was inferior, in my opinion, to some of his past work.

Gangs of New York not winning best picture and best director was a crime.

I thought the Departed was the best movie of the year but it was weird being Scorsese's first best picture/director because it was set in Boston and it didn't star Robert De Niro. I would say it was top tier Scorsese but at the bottom after: Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, and Mean Streets.

Gangs of New York I would put in the 2nd tier along with The King of Comedy, After Hours, Last Temptation of Christ, Casino, Cape Fear, and the Aviator.

Up next for Marty is a Teddy Roosevelt biopic starring Dicaprio but there are now rumors about a prequel and a sequel to the Departed just like the Japanese originals, Infernal Affairs.

Now that I've seen The Prestige I like it better than The Departed. The Departed was a really good movie, but I just feel that The Prestige was better.

I agree with the rest of you guys that The Departed wasn't Marty's best work, but at least he finally got an Oscar. I'm sure he won it this time as kind of a payback for the other times he should've won but didn't. That guy has directed some real masterpieces.

I didn't like Borat. Looks like most of the movie he was just acting and people thought he was real. The funny part was how uncomfortable it made people or how people had to explain stuff to him. You might get a few laughs here and there but it's really not worth it.

Let's Go To Prison was worse than expected, but still better than Borat.

Yeah, LGTP had a few funny things, but all in all, I'd prob say skip it.

I'm wondering how Borat was able to legally make this movie if no one knew it was a movie. Some people really made fools of themsevles and said some very damning and un-PC-like things. Obviously no one signed a waiver. The movie is one big train-wreck. Obviously, that's the whole strategy. Having Pamela Anderson running for her life in sheer terror was kinda funny though! Wonder how many times he was arrested through it all. Unreal. I bet some of these Congressman and News people who had him on to do legit interviews are fuming when they found out they had been had.

This is all my understanding:

Borat sold it to people as a documentary for Kazahkstan - prior to taping, they would sign the waiver. Pamela Anderson was in on the joke. She knows Cohen, and that part of it was scripted.

The college kids tried to sue Cohen for being duped. They contested that they were liquored up when they signed the waiver, but it didn't hold much water and I think was dropped.

Agree J. There were a few parts that were funny--but mainly the expression on Allan Keyes' face, etc. But how uncomfortable was it when the Hooker came to the dinner party? In doses maybe, but watching two naked guys teabag each other for five minutes or so wasn't entertaining for me.

News people who had him on to do legit interviews are fuming when they found out they had been had.

This is from Wikipedia:
WAPT (Jackson, Mississippi) TV news producer Dharma Arthur states in Newsweek she lost her job as a result of her booking Borat on a local afternoon news program. At the time of the appearance, she was unaware of Baron Cohen's act. During an interview with anchor Brad McMullan, Borat made sexual and scatological references, kissed McMullan, and later disrupted a live weather report.[37] She said: "Because of him, my boss lost faith in my abilities and second-guessed everything I did... I spiraled into depression, and... was released from my contract... It took me three months to find another job, and now I'm thousands of dollars in debt and struggling to keep my house out of foreclosure... How upsetting that a man who leaves so much harm in his path is lauded as a comedic genius."

The broadcast, including the initial interview, the disrupted weather report, and several behind-the-scenes shots made by Borat's own film crew, is seen in the Borat movie.

I laughed my butt off. The part where he is having a "hand party" in front of the Victoria Secret in NYC had me rolling on the floor.

I found the Departed to be just ordinary. The New England accents put me off, it was pretty slow, and as usual all star casts just don't seem to work very well together. The ending was pretty predictable.

I have no clue who's baby the therapist was carrying, and what was in the envelope Decaprio gave the therapist? Did I miss something?

I found Seven, The Devil's Own, Heat to be much better movies of a similar type.

TF: I assumed that the envelope would have all the info in it in case of his death. Wish that would have come out. GO, you're referring to the letter that arrived in the mail with the recording in it. Two different things. I kept waiting for that envelope that Leo gave the therapist to be opened too. Why make such a big deal of it then nothing comes of it. Again, I didn't think the ending did the movie justice at all.

Like Great One, I also saw 300 and thought it was very good. I went in skeptical, as some of the previews made it look too "sci-fi ish" for a historical epic. I was glad to be proven wrong, though. One of the best aspects of the film is the cinematography. The fight scenes were very well cheorographed, and had a Matrix type fluidity, without bending (95%+ of the time) what could actually be done by a human. As I said in post 109, I was really hoping the movie wouldn't miss the historic story of the movie. And I think it succeeded, as much of it is based on recorded Spartan history (from the limited amount available).

TF: Yes, it's based on a true battle/war between Greece and Persia. 300 Spartans plus a handful of Greeks versus the Persian army, which at the time was the largest army ever assembled (estimates vary from 100,000 to 2,000,000 - I think most people believe 200,000 is probably the best estimate).

Key about The Departed.
The original Foreign movie that it came from has both a Prequel and a Sequel.
The word I'm hearing is that they will be doing both for the Departed also.

Also watched Superman Returns and The Illusionist.

Superman Returns was so-so, could take it or leave it. Of course, we're not big Superman fans to begin with.

The Illusionist was outstanding as others have said.
Would very highly recommend it.

Still have Prestige sitting.
Just haven't watched it yet.

Illusionist: Excellent. Best magician movie of 2006. Edward Norton is a great actor. I'd say he's probably one of the best American actors of this era.

The Prestige: 2nd best magician movie of `06, which is to say it's also the worst. It's fine, though. Not as good as the Illusionist.

School for Scoundrels: I hate Napoleon Dynamite (the character and the actor) but this movie is worth seeing for ever guy that likes guy movies. I don't want to create expectations. Just see it.

Inside Man: Too unbelievable, Denzel just looked old to me. Clive Owen is a strong actor, I'm beginning to notice. He did the best job in this film. Story was extremely suspect to me.

Pan's Labyrinth: Anyone who likes movies where the real world collides with fantasy worlds, go see this one. It's really good. It's in Spanish and subtitled, but you forget that after 5 minutes. Starts slowly, but really picks up the pace a quarter of the way in. Very creepy creatures.

I watched Rocky Balboa. Remember awhile back when I posted that this guy who loved the Rocky series said it was a horrible film but he liked it because he was a Rocky fan and it was as good as the original, blah blah blah? Well, I am a big fan of the Rocky series as well, though agree that they aren't cinematic masterpieces, they are feel-good stories and I enjoy them.

This one was typical Rocky in some respects. The dialogue was too scripted at times. Rocky's comebacks were too quick-witted for his character at times. Too deep. At times the script was a wreck, etc. But still I enjoyed it. It is a tough call to beat the original, but all in all, it was definitely better than a few of the other Rocky movies.

My wife HATES the Rocky series but I got her to sit in the room with me while it was on and she quit reading her book and actually watched the whole thing. She said she liked it. So it's not just about having to like the Rocky movies afterall. She said what she hated the most about the Rocky series was the obvious fake-fighting and there is less of that in this movie.

Don't go into it trying to buy all of the stuff that goes on, just take it for what it is and enjoy it. The movie flew by. It's only 1:35 long and the fighting doesn't start until the last 15 mins. I thought there should have been more of a wrap-up after the fight, but I'm still hoping there is another one--though my idea of having him train his son is definitely out now due to this movie.

I just wasted an entire weekend watching these three movies.

#1 The best of the worst. Casino Royale: The most interesting thing about this flick is trying to figure if Daniel Craig looks more like Kevin Costner or Liam Neeson or some strange combination of both.

It's loaded with tons of unrealistic action and I do mean UNREALSITIC! In typical movie fashion the hero (bond) can take down an entire troop of baddies with a silenced 9mm. What happend to the famous Bond Walther PPK? Perhaps it was my sound system or tv but the dialogue was very hard to understand, the plot was kind of hard to follow and the entire sound trck was very Un Bond Like.

The one redeeming quality was the footage shot in St Marks Square (Piazza San Marco). I have been lucky enough to visit Venice and this brought back great memories.

#2 Babel, should have been titled Babble. I've always been a Brad Pitt fan but I have to wonder, why Brad why? IMHO the entire story was a non-story. Of course its a Masterpiece compared to what follows.

#3 The Holiday...Its a total CRAP FEST, if you liked "The Toy" "I Heart Huckabees" and "The World According To Garp", then I highly recommend it. I've always been a fan of Jack Black but not even he could save this debacle.

Stay away at all costs!

I liked Casino Royale. It was a kind of a reinvent of the Bond series. I think Craig did very well. The movie had a darker flavor to it than prior Bond films. Nothing beats Sean Connery so that comparison isn't really fair.

Next up for me is The Illusionist. Maybe tonight or sometime during the week.

The Illusionist was a very good movie. Highly underated in my opinion. Ed Norton's characters are always interesting, a little off beat and this movie is no exception.

I watched Rocky Balboa. It was like going to visit a terminally sick relative one last time to say goodbye. If you've been with the series from the start, you might as well and go and watch it to get some closure. The best parts were the little flashbacks to the first couple episodes.

The Marine...STAY AWAY!!!

So sick of getting reeled into by the marketing hype machine. Wonder if that's what Species' real job is????? Funny, that's what Cameron Diaz's job in The Holiday.

300 is all that and more! Its the perfect blend of fact/fiction & fantasy/reality. The filming style is award winning, special effects and graphics are sensational.

If you're a fan of action, adventure and great battle sequences then this movie is a must see.

Almost the prefect movie!

Yeah, I agree with that. I like some animated films a lot, but that one was very dull. The leopard seal was about the only thing that excited me in the whole movie.

I think it probably won the Oscar because (duh) it had the whole 'environmental' message. Al Gore, dancing penguins, it was the trend of the year.

Speaking of Micheal Caine, I just finished watching him in ZULU. The opening credits say introducing Micheal Caine. An oldie but a great film just the same.

I hear that in my house, too.

We just got back from "Meet the Robinsons." If you got kids, they'll probably like it. It has enough futuristic-based-movie genre references to keep movie watching parents entertained as well. I found "Blade Runner," "The Matrix," and "SW II: Attack of the Clones" all in one scene.

Tangentially, Walt Disney (and apparently everyone who writes/ produces for Walt Disney, Inc.) has some serious seperation anxiety issues to work through.

Blades of Glory was exactly what it should be -- I think it was on par with Will Ferrell's other movies. Two thumbs up!

After I saw that movie we snuck into Shooter, starring Mark Wahlberg and Danny Glover. This movie was sorta implausible, but was a very entertaining movie with lots of...well, shooting.

Don't see how anyone can accurately judge a movie and only watch the first 20 minutes.

Like my buddy who walked out 15 minutes into Zoolander in the theater cause he didn't "get it". After I made him sit through it its now one of his favorites and its always quoted... cult classic.

Well, it was a stupid movie. I had better things to do than watch hours in inane actions and idiots acting like idiots.

Plus one of the later scenes I caught while walking thru the den was the dinner table with the kids. How in the hell can people let their kids act in movies like this when they wouldn't let them go to movies like this.

On another note...Children of Men was chilling and hopefully not prophetic. We enjoyed it.

Some more movies I've watched recently:

300 - Loved it. I am a dude so of course I loved the action, but the cinematography took it over the top. The writers/directors took a lot of liberty from a historic standpoint, but what's not to like about camaraderie, patriotism, valour, love, passion, betrayal, revenge, and beer? Okay, no beer but that was all it was missing.

American Beauty - It came out 8 years ago and I just watched it. Phenomenal acting, bizarre storylines, and dark ending. I don't mind cookie-cutter comedies because I watch them to get laughs, but when it comes to a really enjoyable movie I either want to be moved by a compelling story, by great acting, or I want to watch something unique and entertaining. This movie had it all.

Wild Hogs - Fun, enjoyable movie. Good cast that provided laughs throughout. It did make me want to go buy a Harley and take an extended vacation. I don't think I would be slapping any bulls on my trip.

The Lake House - A chick flick, but I liked it. I love Sandra Bullock and thought Keanu Reeves was pretty good in this role. It's an original plot that kept me entertained. I loved the little twists where he would show up in her past.

Lots of duds: RV, The Break Up, School for Scoundrels, and probably several more that I am forgetting.

Saw Death of a President and Volver. Both were different and interesting.

Volver kept my interest even though it was foreign (Spanish) and subtitled. It wasn't great, but again I watched all 2 hours of it. Hated the ending though.

DOAP was intriguing. It's a mockumentary of George Bush getting assasinated. If you had been in a hole somewhere and came out to watch that, you'd swear it really happened. I liked it. In fact, I'd recommend it. Don't think about parties as it has nothing to do with that. It's about the goings on of Presidential security and what we might do had the President been shot.

Saw DOAP and Devil Wore Prada this weekend.

DOAP - first 3/4 was good, and I agree that if you just popped in and didn't know it was a movie you would indeed think it was real. Last 1/4 was pretty boring.

DWP - definitely a chick flick. Not quite sure why Streep got a nomination for this film. She really wasn't a central character and just had to be an ass through the entire film. Dunno.

C1-NRB #155 - finally got to see "Meet the Robinsons" yesterday. Don't forget a pretty hilarious chinese kung fu/Bruce Lee fight scene between the Mom and Uncle that was well done -- all with badly dubbed English over jibberish mouthed 'language'.

Honestly I thought it was a pretty slow movie. Took a really long time to 'get to the point'. Cute, but not on par with most Pixar flicks if you ask me.

Sky High with Kurt Russell, Kelly Preston, Lynda Carter, and a bunch of kids, was FANTASTIC. Clearly created as a kiddie movie, it's intelligent, interesting, and well-acted. Moreover, the big "secret" is incredibly clever and well-thought-out. For a superhero movie, the action isn't so great, but who cares? Clearly, there were some comic book fans involved in this, and even though that's not my bag, the end result is spectacular. I had never heard about this movie prior to seeing it, and it far exceeded even my highest expectations.

I enjoyed Blood Diamonds. The wife thought it was too violent. Seemed realistic as far as what I've heard about the situation anyhow.

Van Wilder 2 (Taj) was kidna dumb (as expected), but actually entertained.

We dumped Netflix. May or may not go to BlockBuster--just depends on how much time we have this summer. Just tired of having to wait on some of the movies for weeks and how at times it takes them several days to get some movies or get them back to us when they always receive them the next day. The throttling is very real.

MY "BLADES OF GLORY" REVIEW: IN 187 WORDS OR LESS
I saw Blades of Glory this past week and was expecting the same old same old Will Ferrell movie, but it turned out to be just that but a lot better. To me, this was the best written Ferrell comedy in a long time. I'm not a fan of John Heder, but I might have been converted after this flick. If you haven't seen it, despite any thoughts of it sucking, just bite the bullet and go see it. You'll laugh and you'll enjoy it. If not, you're not human

saw 3 -- brutually violent, but loved some of the new gadgets. nice to see some of the old questions answered. 8 teeth pulled with string and a door handle out of 10.

john tucker must die -- terrible. i won't be "sleeping in a hammock" anytime soon. 2 fake game winning shots out of 10.

babel -- love these stories that are connected to each other. didn't have the same pull as 'crash' but still a good flick. 7 unshaven brad pitts out of 10.

nacho libre -- after seeing school of rock and king kong on hbo non-stop, i needed to see jack black back in a comedy role. it was ok. wish it had more fake wrestling. 6 sweaty luchador armpits out of 10.

Went and saw Spider-Man 3 last night. The actions scenes were fantastic. Bruce Campbell shows up in a small part and is very funny. Peter's "transformation" is very comical as well. Most of the movie was very enjoyable, even though some of it seemed like a last minute toss-in. I could have done without all the scenes with Mary Jane and Peter working out their drama and her singing bits, but I am glad I went and watched this on the big screen. I can see that, but I really liked the movie. Do you not like low budget movies in general or what it just this one? Do you like Clerks? Because that movie was definitely on a budget, but it's a classic.

I think the zombie type movies are really fun like Dawn/Land of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead and 28 Days Later. 28 Weeks Later looks so-so. I don't think it'll have the desperation feeling that 28 Days had.

The DVD had a "making of" film, that my wife and I re-titled "Pure Rage: The Renting of 28 Days Later"

Alot of really funny parts, then watching all of the extra's brings the movie close to 3+ hours. Of course alot of the stuff is really nasty, but there are some really great ones in there. By far my favorite gag was the Taxi one with Jay C. Would have been better if he had the stache from Super Troopers though.

I liked it alot overall. Now going to have to check out the 2nd one in theaters. (Between the two of them though it looks like a Blair Witch to Blair Witch 2 jump, due to what kind of a hit both first movies were). Probably be a let down in 2, but still Days was good for me. Isn't as bad by far as some of the other zombie movies.

Okay, just watched The Fast and Furious: Tokoyo Drift and it is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Automatically makes my list of top 20 worst movies ever. Terrible movie, terrible script, and terrible acting. The Japanese mafia's nephew with the high school student girlfriend? The final race to...um...prove what exactly? You know the Italian/American mafia wouldn't have handled this crap with a "drift" race. Seriously, how dumb was it during the chase scene that the cars weren't just hauling ass instead of drifting all around through traffic? Dumb, dumb, dumb. I felt my brain cells dying while watching this movie. Good thing it was on HBO.

Watched Children of Men last night and was disappointed. They could of done a lot with the plot/story, but didn't. It seemed like it couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a deep, meaningful movie, or just an action movie, and because it couldn't decide, it succeeded at neither. Two out of 5 stars on Netflix.

Amen. I agree completely. Great concept for a film, but sometimes those types of movies have nowhere to go once they've laid the groundwork (28 Days Later comes to my mind).

I watched an old favorite of mine this morning: In the Mouth of Madness. It's a John Carpenter vehicle and it's one of the best psychological horror movies I have ever seen. It's very creepy. I'd recommend watching it at night to get the full fright you're seeking.

I love so many things in that movie, but I particularly loved when they were throwing his albums at the zombies and he was going through his favorite albums and rationalizing which were ok to use as ammunition.

[Looking through Shaun's LP collection for suitable records to throw at two approaching zombies]
Ed: Purple Rain.
Shaun: No.
Ed: Sign o' the Times.
Shaun: Definitely not.
Ed: The Batman soundtrack?
Shaun: Throw it.
[Ed does so; it misses]
...
Ed: Dire Straits.
Shaun: Throw it.
[Ed throws it - clipping Mary in the side of the head]
Ed: Stone Roses?
Shaun: No.
Ed: Second Coming?
Shaun: I like it.
Ed: Ah! Sade.
Shaun: That's Liz's.
Ed: Yeah, but she did dump you. [Throws it]

The Covenant
A good concept, with horrible acting, bad lines, and a story that had a few moments (but few and far between). Didn't think the movie was going to be that great, but it was worse than that. Watching the special feature section right now and cracking up how they talk about the concept is so great and the movie is awesome. Wish it had a more Underworld type of feel to it, I wasn't into this movie at all, just bored.

Saw spiderman 3 total let down do not know if it was the fact that the theatre was like 90 degrees or the boring/cliche dialogue was killing me. still over all i would give it a marginal thumbs up. also saw Oldboys over the weekend and was was not let down one of the best revenge driven movies i have seen almost on the level of 'high plaiuns drifter'. the movie did lose some in translation i think and it could have done with out some of the violence or atleast the stylized violence which seemed out of place for movie. i would highly recomend it for those who like both hitchcock and old eastwood westerns.

agree with the last few...

28 Weeks Later was a solid action-thriller type film. Certainly worth seeing, though not my cup of tea. (I am looking forward to 1408 with Cusack though).

Pirates was solid, better than #2, not as good as #1. Worth seeing, especially in an actual movie theater as its tons of special effects.

Shrek 3 - haven't seen yet, but everything i have heard seems right in line with what Crue said above.

Long post warning.

I saw (most of) The Devil Wears Prada this weekend. I say "most of" because I had the grill fired up and was back and forth keeping an eye on it.

I haven't talked about the movie because I'm conflicted over how I feel about it. I really liked Meryl Streep's character. I've worked around, although not directly for, people like Miranda (the character's name.) In the first scene Miranda was in my wife said, "I can't imagine being that feared by people." To which I said, "She's someone who is very, very good at what she does. She KNOWS her job. She also knows everyone else's job, and they KNOW she knows their job." I'm conflicted because to a certain extent I'm that way in what I do but I don't instill fear in people, and have no desire to.

The protagonist's (yes, I see the title character as the protagonist here) struggle is presented as, "It's because she's a woman and a man wouldn't be viewed that way;" which is too obvious a line for the screenwriters to not use. The only people who view her "that way" are the people who don't understand what she does. And by "what she does" I don't mean "what she does to people." Miranda is the best in the world at her job because she works hard at it and surrounds herself with people who she expects to also be the best at what they do. If they aren't she doesn't want them around. She pushes people to excell and they either do or they don't; things are black or white- there's no middle ground.

There are a few scenes where Miranda isn't "in control" and in those she isn't wearing black and white. It would require a second, closer viewing to confirm but to the best of my recollection this is the case. M. Night Shamalan (sp?) used this type of color coding in The Sixth Sense- the color red appears only in scenes that have a ghost.

One other bit of greatness- in a deleted scene Miranda tells Anne Hathaway's character to "get away from [her]; she's useless." The scene and character wind up on the cutting room floor. Wonderful irony, that.

J is right, this is a good time for movies...

Knocked Up was spectacular. Especially the scene that most people reading this can relate to.

Spider-Man 3 was pretty good - on par with the first one and much better than the second one.

I just TiVo'd John Tucker Must Die and am excited to see it.

Saw an old one, Defending Your Life recently. Very well-done and ahead of its time.

Transformers is coming soon. I am excited.

Angels and Demons, the Dan Brown book, and Dragons of the Autumn Twilight, the Dragonlance book, are both due soon, and I am excited.

I echo these sentiments. Go see this movie asap You CANNOT bring your kids though. Get a babysitter. It took me a while to figure out what scene Hen was referring to... and was hoping some of the earlier scenes were NOT what he was referring to, but the scene eventually presented itself lol... I was just on IMDB reading some of the "memorable quotes" from this movie and cracking up all over again. Especially the one with the Doorman (played by Craig Robinson). There were a lot of great cameos too (which I won't spoil).

Just finished A Sound of Thunder with Edward Burns (he plays himself on Entourage). This is a very interesting premise (time travel gone awry) with some spectacular effects. It's great except for you have to suspend your knowledge of physics even more than your typical time travel movie. In other words, "that's not what you would logically expect to happen, even if time travel were possible."

Nevertheless, it's worth seeing (after Knocked Up).

Anybody heard of Redbox (or similar concept)? You usually see them in grocery stores.
It's a DVD machine that only charges $1 per day. They don't have a ton of new releases but we've picked up a few things we wouldn't have otherwise because, Hey, it's only $1.

This weekend we got something called "The Last Letter." Think "12 Angry Men" with a twist. Actually, I thought it had one twist too many.
I think it was a direct-to-DVD release. There was a pretty good film hiding in it somewhere, but budget constraints probably got in the way. I'm going to imagine the treatment was going good but the writer/ producer refused to give in on a plot point so he ended up producing it himself without any big backing.

Evil Dead the musical, I must see this! Army of Darkness, yes, PD. I am a big Bruce Campbell, Ash, Evil Dead, fan, and have Evil Dead I and II special edition DVDs. These movies make me laugh every time. There's a new Bruce Campbell flick due out on dvd or distribution where he basically plays himself being asked by a bunch of students in some town to track down an evil force/monster cos of his movie rep. Looks good. I just saw his own movie, "Man with the Screaming Brain," and I thought it was awful.

Loved Bruce's character in the animated flick Ant Bully and his coach character in Sky High. He's got a part in the new USA series Burn Notice, but I likely won't bother checking it out. I also have his book, "Make Love, the Bruce Campbell Way," and have yet to start it. Too many things. This guy makes me laugh though. He is the ultimate B-movie icon. Kinda cool that he grew up buddies with Sam Raimi (in "If Chins Could Kill") he chronicles their childhood, intro to moviemaking, and making of Evil Dead.

Knocked Up was sooo very good. Not many movies about stoners having babies these days. Aaaar. Like I said, Apatow is just a very good writer and really knows how to present the dilemmas with major humor, but not unrealistic dumb humor. Movies like this hopefully (but doubtfully) raise the bar on the idiotic one's (e.g. License to Wed) so that we get more of these.

Last week I saw two films, Ratatouille and Ocean's 13. We wanted to see Sicko, but it was sold out looong before showtime in my hood (like 4 hours before, on a Saturday in the summer in NYC, that says a lot).

Ocean's 13 was the best of the 3 IMO, but these are movies largely with clever dialog and great eye candy, oh, and excellent tongue in cheek acting, but not much more. Soderbergh does some cool stuff, but his other indie movies are so much better. Also, there's no suspense with the crime caper. They tell you the plan, and then they execute it, with little likelihood of mistakes or double-crosses. It was the only other decent movie playing at the time (I could not convince my squeemish wife to see "1408," even though she knew it was supposed to be good).

Ratatouille was fantastic. Pixar always makes great films cos of the stories. And the story here was excellent, again. The animation was very good, too. I feel the story and lessons were more age appropriate for 8 and up, but my 6 year old, who did not get it, still enjoyed it. Not a lot of laughs in this one... and more human characters than in most any other Pixar movie, but still well done. Brad Bird loses nothing on Andrew Stanton (and his other flick, The Incredibles, was great, too...and his non-Pixar movie, "The Iron Giant" just awesome).

I see tons of movies.

My wife and I share this film class at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan (walking distance from our apt). For a mere $30, you see a first run movie and then the lead actor or director comes out and does a one hour interview with a moderator (chair of the Columbia film school) and directly with the audience. No dumbass talk show personal questions either...all about the film or other films the person has done. We've seen many a big actor and director (e.g. Al Pacino, Sean Penn, John Turturro, John Waters, Edward Norton, Ben Stiller, Julianne Moore, Michael Caine, Keitel, etc.), and it's very cool. My wife has taken this over though, as one of us usually stays home with the kids, and I have not gone to too many the past few years. There's only five "classes," in the Fall, but it's way cool (and convenient). Rambling, sorry.

Aaaaaaah, Rebel Fan. I also own Bubba Ho Tep (sequel is in the works). Now I must say, I am biased here, cos one of my favorite all-time authors is Joe R. Lansdale, who wrote the story on which the movie is based...and I had read Bubba Ho Tep before the film. So, I eagerly awaited seeing this. And, on top of that, I'm a big Bruce fan. The expectations were high.

I liked it. It captured the right degree of humor, sadness, satire and horror that Joe was trying to create in the book (Joe R is a master at combining genres). Bruce as Elvis was just great, and Ossie Davis was really good as his sidekick, JFK. I just love that story.

So, RF, a big thumb's up for me...not the typical adventure or scares one would see in a horror movie, but a subtle slice of twilight zone type satire.

Rendle, I have not seen Bad Taste. I must! I loved Dead Alive, seeing that Aussie flick on Haight street at midnight when it was released way back in the early 1990s. What a blast. Love the lawnmower buckets of blood scene.

Speaking of campy horror, check out how lucky I was this weekend. The mrs checked out early, I scanned through movies on demand (the pay one's), and there's a new feature in Time Warner Cable NYC: IFC First Run (current in theaters!!). For $5.95, there were 3 flicks available for purchase that are out right now. Guess which one was available? "Black Sheep." I immediately toked up and watched this very funny and yet semi-straight-up New Zealand horror film about "good sheep gone bad." Man, there were a few scenes of utter total gross gore that was even beyond what I have seen (or had to imagine seeing) that I have ever seen before. Highly recommended if you like this genre. This is not like "Wolf Creek," that very scary serial killer flick from either Australia or NZ (I always get 'em confused, sorry), cos it had much more silly humor (I mean, killer sheep; humans morphing into killer werewolve-type sheep?), but it was just well done.

Re-Animator (and From Beyond) have to be two of the best campy horror movies every. Stuart Gordon did those, IIRC, and that weirdo B-actor, Jeffrey Combs, is in every one of 'em. Re-Animator just rocked. First time I saw it, I was laughing and just floored.

"Once": I have not, but have noticed that this movie is supposed to be great. Foreign film, right? It's on the list cos I think the mrs will like it, but there's always too many choices and too little movie time in NYC (I'll take that situation though!).

Speaking of foreign movies, over the weekend I saw "Oldboy." It was as good as it gets. Visually very appealing with a great story. I highly recommend this one.

I second the Oldboy flick. Those Asian action and suspense movies are so underrated. How about that fight scene with our hero vs. like, the world? ... and then the hammer.

Two ideas:

1. I wish there was a "spoiler button" to click like some other internet forums. You get the movie spoilers after you click on them. (e.g. a "spoiler alert" button)

2. Is there a way to list movies and have us vote on them from a 0.0 to 10.0 scale? That would be informative. Many would vote, and the list would grow each week.

I have a feeling gurupies smell better than rotten tomatoes, ;)

I am a huge fan of the Harry Potter book series, and I have to admit I left the theater yesterday disappointed with the 5th movie installment. Admittedly, fitting enough of Book 5 into a 2.5 hour movie is impossible, but I just think the screenwriter and director did not focus enough on the more vital themes to satisfy my taste.

Visually it was quite well done. The final battle was pretty sweet, although again I would have loved to see that be longer and more meaningful than what they did.

Perhaps I am biased by having read the book.

Watched "The Last Mimzy" and all I have to say is that this movie had nothing but cardboard acting from every person in it. A to Z. Everyone. And it might just be me, but the "product placement" in this one was just annoying.

300 is testosterone put into DVD form for human consumption. I wouldn't be surprised if women who watch this movie grow actual physical balls and an adam's apple. This movie was great. I'd love to see another like it.

The Number 23 was very good, but not nearly as good as 300. The coincidences surrounding the number are pretty mindboggling.

Didn't see 300. Might be hard for me to get passed the idea of Spartan soldiers depicted as barely dressed male underwear models filmed in bronze hue. Perhaps my wife will like it. :)

The new Harry Potter was the best film yet in the series, despite lacking some of the fantastic scenery of the previous installments. My wife, who has has read all the novels, was disappointed, mostly with what they chose to gloss over. I did have one or two logical issues regarding the continued storyline, but still the best film overall. In fact I think each successive film has been progressively better.

Rocky Balboa laid it on as thick as any other Rocky movie. Very tired and very, very simple, even for the Rocky franchise.

Children of Man: Agree w/threespleens in post 149. Could have been so much more.

Pan's Labrynth was a letdown. Maybe I'd seen too many rave reviews and expected too much. Impressive visually, but not as much so as I'd been led to believe. Fair at best for a fantasy story, though WW2 era Spain did provide a cool backdrop.

Generally women don't watch softcore gay porn, but I'm sure you will subject some poor woman to it and if your dream comes true, I'm sure you'll tell us all about her balls.

I'd love to see another like it.

There is an entire industry making gay porn, knock yourself out.

From that review.

If you watch this movie and go into a Taco Bell, and say to the cashier, “I need some extra sauce packets” guess what? You’re getting twenty sauce packets because your face will punch him in the brain.

The really funny part is that I had Taco Bell for lunch today and I got a bunch of hot sauce packets and I didn't really even ask for them.

The reviewer in all his juvinility is 100% correct. The movie is setup like a videogame and the heavy music goes very nicely with the battle scenes that are too many to count. The makers of 300 knew exactly who their target audience was and made no apologies about getting it.

I don't know about softcore gay porn (or what in SZ's post could be seen as intolerant) but the images I've seen in reviews and trailers for 300 are obvious deliberate homoeroticism.

Not sure if that's what Box meant when he said, "The makers of 300 knew exactly who their target audience was and made no apologies about getting it."

Yeah, I've been reading Aint it Cool (Harry & co) for years...very fun and funny web-site. Good to have a film-oriented web-site devoted towards action, horror and sci-fi (and Harry now is into posting reviews for all kinds of movies), but Harry is quite the fanboy and gives pos reviews to many movies that sorta are mediocre or just suck. Still, his writing like a fan style is really refreshing, but now this guy is big, and he has major access and even gravitas. Amazing.

I went and saw The Simpsons on Friday.

*Semi-spoiler alert*

The two funniest bits:
It starts with an "Itchy & Scratchy" cartoon that the family is watching in a theater. Homer says, "Booooring. Who would pay good money to see something in a theater they could watch on TV at home for free? You're all idiots. You, (points left) you, (points right) and especially YOU!" (points at the "camera.")

Halfway through the screen goes black and says "To be continued..." followed a few frames later by "Immediately" and it picks up where it left off.

*Semi-spoiler off*
Overall I give it a "Meh."

Zodiac was outstanding. Maybe the movie was long in time but it didn't feel that way. The acting was very good. The guy from Brokeback was really good and Downey Jr. was very good as well.

I thought the scene where they were wearing the "I Am Not Avery" buttons while Downey is taking target practice to be very funny. It added some humor to a serious movie.

Of the three movies I've seen recently (#23, 300, & Zodiac), Zodiac was the best.

Believe it or not, it took me this long to see Invincible, which I saw last night. It was decent, not great. Greg Kinnear and Marky Mark were very good, but there weren't enough characters to relate to. They all just kind of sat in the background.

I did enjoy all of the Eagles scenes, including the fight song.
