Subject: Amazing Old 50s-60s-70s You-Tube Finds

  Posted by: Toral - [52621719] Tue, May 22, 2007, 22:44

I've been wandering around You-Tube and found some amazing things.

1. Tammy Wynette sings "Stand by Your Man", c. 1968? -- source unknown.

First -- ignore the hair. Listen to the words; appreciate the voice.

Notice Tammy's approach and bearing. She does not find it necessary to crudely or falsely emote: no gesticulations, grinding of hips, wild facial expressions, flirting with the hosts, kisses to the audience.... She sings her song, which she co-wrote (in 15 minutes, reportedly) and will be remembered as long as popular music exists, acknowledges the audience with a "Thank You", and leaves the stage.

You can't find something like this in the MSM at any price.

OK, so it's not that old, but I recently stumbled onto a Depeche Mode concert clip from 1994. I was at the show and I was really appreciative (and in disbelief) that someone had bothered to tape it. I mean, think back to `94. Not only were there almost no cell phones (or cell phone cameras) but camcorders were massive. I wonder how that dude scored that footage anyway.

Yes, YouTube is a veritable treasure trove. Thumbs up.

First off, her hair is awesome and somebody needs to bring that style back. =)

Seriously, that was a great vocal. My Dad listened to nothing but country when I was growing up so I was fairly burned out on this type of music as a teen. I can appreciate it more today. Actually, THIS GUY (might be Motley Crue) summed it up nicely.

OK, here's my next find.

Great lyric, IMO.

Now, the video for this one should ruin it, technically. Because you shouldn't realize where the singer is until very late in the song.

But there's only one singer for this one. (There's also a very very sweet and charming vocal for this one by Joan Baez from the Smothers Brothers show on You Tube -- but Joan either intentionally changes or screws up the end lyrics. That's not her first time either -- she did the same on her biggest pop hit recording, The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down.)

The Green, Green Grass of Home.

Great stuff guyz, keep it comin'.

For afficionados (if any) of "The Green Green Grass of Home", here is a Porter Wagoner version.

To be honest, until a few days ago I had no idea who Porter Wagoner was....He was apparently a major country singer, and having listened to some of his stuff the last few days I can understand why. He had the first big recording of TGGGoH, but it was Tom Jones who made it famous. As with Tammy, don't judge Porter by his hair; it was just the style of the times.

Joan Baez version of TGGGoH.

Listening closely, I think she altered the last 2 lines to make the conclusion less harsh. I appreciate the sentiment, but it was a mistake. She's a lot cuter than I remembered though!

Toral

P.S. There's a backstory there you can follow in the comments. Joan's husband was in jail at the time for evading the draft; CBS allowed her to dedicate the song to her husband, but censored the part where she said why he was in jail, etc. etc. When I say "etc., etc.", Smothers Brothers editing/censorship by CBS was a huge issue and well covered at the time, and is perhaps something we should remember, now in a similar war, but I lived through it and it's all "etc., etc." to me.

Actually we could use them now...I think they're both alive and functioning. Tommy was called out in public on the Rome show for using the F-word in an address to a crowd that included children a year or so ago. Rome reported a few days later that Tommy had called in and denied it. Typical Tommy....If I was a TV Executive I'd announce the "New Smothers Brothers Show" as a summer replacement, and play to the anti-war sentiment of 2 generations. I bet it would be a big hit. I'll send the idea in to FOX....

#28: This was one of those dance shows that brought on some artists, usually to lip-synch, to their current hit song. Soul Train still does it, but there were a bunch in the late 70s-early 80s. The video isn't so much a Sugar Hill Gang video as much as a video of their appearance on that dance show.

Classic WW2 era Popeye cartoon.

As much as South Park and The Family Guy push limits, neither would so characaturize another race or culture today. I wonder if Popeye's producers even gave it a thought 65 years ago.

I remember those anti-Japanese cartoons; they were still running in the late '60s; some of them were a lot worse in terms of portrayal of Japanese. The morning TV station would go through its Popeye cycle a number of times a year, and I remember looking forward to one cartoon in particular in which Popeye essentially destroys the entire Japanese fleet before meeting up with Tojo, portrayed with an incredibly hideous demonic/simian-like face. Even as a little kid I remember being shocked.

Hullabaloo was a Hollywood attempt to cash in on some trend. I can't remember what trend -- although I do remember that as a show, it was considered a big joke at the time, even by ignorant teens.

But they had money; and could buy appearances from the biggest stars around. Somebody has put up basically everything Hullaballoo ever did. Watch the props and set. A week or so ago I called up on u-tube a performance that has what i regarded as a top song/singer of the period, showcased by 25 or so girls suddenly rising out of bathtubs in the middle of a number, and go-go dancing. As God is my witness. I couldn't bring myself to link to that. But it appears there will be a lot of amazing Hullabalou clips, with fine recording artists and sometimes surreal stagery.

Let us start with Nancy Sinatra, These Boots Are Made For Walking

Youtube has taken down the video from Post 65 due to copyright claims by Sony, but you can "see" the audio only version below. It was interesting that John Bon Jovi did this song recently as part of his "unplugged" program, and relayed how he had heard this song from a late singer (Jeff Buckley) several years back. Interesting that a musician of his longevity had not known of Leonard Cohen before a fellow musican told him that Buckley had covered it. I agree with many that this version done by Buckley was the best I have heard, even better than the original which is also very good.

Ref (36) said he couldn't find it...

But, if you look hard --
Patsy Cline, "Crazy"

Willie Nelson wrote it! Wow! (I'm sure everyone knows that, but I've never claimed to know anything about music.) I never had any use for Willie Nelson as a singer. He just jumped from 5 points out of 10 to 10/10 in my estimation.

man, Willie is a 20 out of 10 to me. his singing, his style, his songwriting, and his way of life or just fantastic things....

Would it blow your mind that Lionel Richie wrote some of Kenny Rogers greatest hits?! lol...

As far as Willie goes, thats like saying Johnny Cash can't sing. Technically you are right... they can't sing a lick. But they are great singers. If that makes sense lol...

Tree, ever heard this Toby Keith song? Never smoke with Willie...
The live ones are better cause the crowd is singing along, but this version you can understand what he's saying.

GO: I understand the concept. I was totally into the Johnny Cash thing from way back when "Ring of Fire" was one of my father's favourite songs, all through the rest of Johnny's life. And I deduced from the flavour of Willie Nelson's performances that he was supposed to have the same kind of thing going....I just never got it. Again, if that's bad on anyone, it's on me, not Willie Nelson. I'm just reporting my reactions....

absolutely. it's my second favorite song about Willie, behind "What Would Willie Do?", by Bruce Robison...

This clip was taken off for usage violation not long after I posted it.

But someone has put it up again! So enjoy it while it's here. I wonder whether there's any way to download it to my computer for good this time? It'd be happy to pay something to the rights holder if it would identify itself.

The above Porter Wagoner clip has again been taken away for 'usage violation'.

There is an earlier clip up, from shortly after Wagoner first recorded the song:

Very poor picture quality...but the famous "You Fool!" episode of Gilbert Gottfried on the new Hollyqood Squares:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkkMkefwa8k

BTW...I think Gilbert could have bluffed one more time. The content of his last answer should have been used as a bluff, and would have worked.

I need the help of Gurupies here.

A very funny but rather accidentally salacious episode occurs
between 1:07- 1:15 of this SGSA video.

My question is -- who is the actress/clue giver? She's clearly a smart gal and good $10K player....but who is she?

Just to answer your question Toral, it only took a couple of months, she was just one of the contestants and she was giving clues to Michael McKean. Also the link you provided wasn't right, but based on your information I was able to find the right clip here. SGSA

Simply an amazing performance/video for when it was recorded... an Italian disco song that's sung in a sort of "jibberish" English... Prisencolinensinainciusol

The whole thing is one long take on a live broadcast.

Several years later he did another performance that is also available on youtube... but there's one video which is a mash up of the two performances that has by far the best audio quality.

Too bad they don't have the uninterrupted video of the first with the improved audio of the second.

I'd leave this one up to a guessing game, but the youtube page says it right at top:

Jimmy Page

But can you figure out which one he is?
