Subject: American Idol 2008 Contest Thread

All discussion goes in the other thread. This thread will be for making picks and recording standings only.

The Game
After each episode you make the following picks:
1) Who was the best singer.
2) Who is going home for the week.
3) Who is safe.

Scoring:
1) If your best singer for the week stays you win 10 points and if they go home you lose 10 points.
2) For each correct safe vote you get 2 points and for each incorrect safe vote you lose 4 points.
3) If the person you pick to go home for the week goes home you get 10 points. If they are safe you lose 4 points.

Rules:
1) You don't have to vote for everyone, but you can only give each person only one label each week; Best, Safe, or Going Home.

Posting Format
Please put your picks in like this after each episode:

Best - List who you believe was the best singer and will not be going home
Going Home - List who will be going home for the week
Safe or Not Safe - You have three ways you can do this. You can list by name who you think will be safe. You can have a Not Safe list with just the names you don't think are safe and everyone not listed will be considered on your Safe list, or if you want everyone not listed as Best or Gong Home to be on your safe list you can simple put:
Safe - Everyone else.

I will edit this thread to reflect the remaining contestants weekly. Please keep all idol discussion in the other thread. Anyone can play this game and can join in at any time. If you don't join in for a couple weeks the chances are you won't win, but there aren't any prizes anyway, so just play and have fun. This game is in no way affiliated with American Idol or Fox Television. The sponsor of this game does not care who wins as long as nobody believes the game is fixed. =)

Just to clairify:
We name one and only one for the best.
We name the same number as going home as will be voted off for that week. (4 for the next two weeks and 1 after that)
We can name as many "safe" contestants as we want in order to maximize points. (perhaps the penalty for missing should be more....like -6?)


Also what I want to know is if any Idol contestants were harmed in the playing of this game.

When we get to the final 12 once you name someone as best should we not be allowed to pick that person again....or at least not the same person in consecutive weeks?
Could get really boring if we all pick the same person each week.

      Wed, Mar 05, 2008, 08:55 		Rules clarification: Can we pick more "going home" candidates than is possible? For example, can I pick 3 guys to go home this week?

I'd suggest that we not allow that, as I think there is otherwise a scoring asymmetry to exploit. For example, if I think there are three guys who are equally likely to go home, if I name all three as "going home" and those two are included, then that trio nets 16 points.

      Wed, Mar 05, 2008, 19:38 		Good point and one I should have specified in the rules. You can only pick one best per episode and you can only pick as many going home as their are people actually going home.

I like Weykools idea as well. Once we get down to the top 12 and until we get to the top 3, no picking the same best two weeks in a row. This won't affect this weeks pick, but whoever you pick as best after the top 12 perform will affect your "best" pick for the top 11 performances. This way everyone doesn't pick The Patriots Archuleta every week. He's pretty much a lock to make the top 3 at this point.

The main problem is we dont always know when thay change it from bottom 3 vs bottom 3 or only naming the person going home.

After thinking about the bottom 3 thing I came up with a possible bonus points system.
For each wrong answer you lose 1 point.
For any right answers you get points based on how many of us had that person.
1 person = 10 points
2 people = 5 points each
3 people = 3 points each
4 or more = 2 points each
Perhaps we pick 3 people the next 3 weeks and then drop the number to bottom 2 after that.

After looking at last week it seems like there isnt enough scoring diversity to allow people to catch up.
Thoughts?

I'm going to pick Cook to win it all and am going to risk 269 points.
I had a personal emergency this week and wish I had come up with this idea earlier, but for sure this is how we are going to finish next season and if everyone can go ahead and put down their "bets' we can see how it turns out this year. Next year I will have everyone email me their final bets, but here is how it works:
You pick who will win the final and you can bet up to your maximum amount of points. It's like Final Jeopardy. So does Skidazl risk 291 points to insure he is the winner in case JeffG risks it all, but what if JeffG only risks 100 points?

Okay, so most people will probably just risk max points because you get a 50% chance to double up AND somebody is going to do it AND nothing is really on the line anyway, but at least this way there is a shot for everyone to win it all. Have fun with it.
