Subject: Best Song ever

  Posted by: Bond, James Bond - [5032423] Fri, Jan 28, 2005, 02:58

I imagine we'll garner a plethora of tastes here. Ought to be interesting.

For me, the best song ever is Hotel California by the Eagles.

The anthem "We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions" would get my vote. Great song that has had a huge impact across music, sports, etc..

It might be Metallica's "One"
or it might be "Stairway to Heaven"
or maybe Jethro Tull's "Aqualung"
perhaps Elvis Costello's "Beyond Belief"
Some surely think it is Don McClean's "American Pie"
All of those are among my favorites and I probably could not choose between them.
For much of the past 15 or 15 years, Janes Addiction's "Summertime Rolls" has been a song that I cannot hear only once.
Can Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" count? If so, that might be the overwhelmingly most popular choice, historicly speaking.
If so, the Blue Danube Waltz, 1812 Overture and probably about 15 other orchestral compositions warrant mention.
Most certainly among them would be John Williams' "Grand Imperial March"
I do love the simple beauty of Depeche Mode's "Somebody"
My favorite could be Descendents' "Clean Sheets"
or Outkast's "Bombs over Baghdad"
Prince's "Play in the Sunshine" or "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man"
Those remind me that Fishbone's "Everyday's Sunshine" is one of my all-time favs.
So is Nashville Pussy's "Go to Hell"
I should consider that it might be The Beatles "A Day in the Life" or "Elenor Rigby" or "Revolution" or "Here Comes the Sun" or about 15 others.
A poll of 10,000 Rolling Stones fans chose "Sympathy for the Devil" as their favorite Stones tune.
Anyone Know Human Resource's "Dominator"?
There's Joy Division's "Atmosphere"
I cannot leave out Public Enemey's "Bring the Noise" (with or without Anthrax)
Can't forget Ministry's "So What"
or Black Sabbath's "War Pigs"
Please allow me to submit Orbital's "Belfast" and Scott Hardkiss "Raincry" (sorry that was the best sample I could find).
Social Distortion's "Ball and Chain" might be my favorite song.
Or it could be School of Fish's "Three Strange Days".
Hopefully Nerveclinic will see this and appreciate hearing one of my favorites, Dance Conspiracy's "Dub War" for the first time in ages.
Perhaps he will wish I stayed at it long enough to dig up a sample of Acen's "Close Your Eyes" (or maybe he's too cool for school to still like that one:))
Oh there are so so so many more. But I'll be late for work if I don't get in the shower now.

1. Locomotive, Guns N Roses
2. Black, Pearl Jam
3. With or Without You, U2
4. Livin on a Prayer, Bon Jovi
5. Life on Mars, David Bowie

The best song of all time could also be
Naked Eyes' "Always Something There to Remind Me" or
The Turtles' "I Can't See Me Loving Nobody But You".
Its also possible that the two best songs ever might both be found on the movie soundtrack for the film, Cool World:
My Life With The Thrill Kill Cult's "Sex on Wheels" and
Future Sound of London's "Papua New Guinea"

How could I forget Randy Newman's signature song "I Love LA!"?

The song Ohio State plays during "Script Ohio" is awesome. One of the best traditions in all of sports in my opinion. What beats a high stepping sousaphone player? Nothing, I say.

Thinking more, the best song might be
Kon Kan's "Promise" or
perhaps their version of I Beg Your Pardon (I Never Promised You A Rose Garden)
It could certainly be Big Audio Dynamite II's "Rush"
But that might lead one to think, how could the best song ever be by BAD2 and not The Clash? So maybe it isn't "Rush".
Maybe it's "London Calling"

I like Reel big Fish's - Nothin' - I used to psych myself up for job interviews with this song, when they start with the "I don't F^ckin Care, I don't F^ckin Care, I don't F^ckin Care anymore" Love that song!!!! It made me less nervous and helped me get my first job :)

Mattingly it was funny the first time but it's getting old.

This thread makes me realize that I'm starting to get old.

Hey, every song I've mentioned is a great great great song in my opinion and could easily rank as "the best ever" ahead of any other song I've mentioned (IMO of course). I'm really not trying to be funny by spamming the thread with 50 songs. I think all of us know that there can never be a single "best song", so in actuality this is for us to talk about our favorite music, right? Sorry if my selections or the abundance of them annoys anyone.

J surprised you didn't list "Birdhouse In Your Soul" I debated putting that one in. Wish I would have thought of "Where is My Mind" and "Cherub Rock" first.

And seeing Faith No More's "Epic" on your list is why I love threads like this. Wow I haven't thought of that band in a long time. What was their other hit that I liked a lot... "We Care A Lot!"

Razor, funny you should mention "Script Ohio". I lived in Columbus and actually attended OSU. I personally knew one of the tuba players who's job it was to dot the "I" in OHIO.

Can't tell you how difficut it was being a Michigan fan living in Buckeye Country. Both schools have great traditions.

Their drummer was on a rerun of Who Want's to be a Millionaire last night. He ended up missing the $16,000 question with 2 life lines left. I'll have to check out "We Care a Lot". I always enjoyed "Epic" and their remake of "Easy on Sunday Morning".

I think Faith No More's Epic was the only song I knew by them. I'm pretty sure the "new" Faith No More has a song on Madden 2005.

I have the double disc of They Might Be Giants greatest hits, but I try to just pick 2 songs from each band to listen to. I really like all their stuff. I saw them in concert last summer without really knowing any of their songs and they were amazing - outdoors in the rain even!

Girl
I can't understand it why you want to hurt me
After all the things I've done for you.
I buy you champagne and roses and diamonds on your finger -
Diamonds on your finger -
Still you hang out all night
what am I to do?

My girl wants to party all the time

Party all the time
party all the time.
My girl wants to party all the time
party all the time.

She parties all the time - party all the time

She likes to party all the time - party all the time

party all the time - she likes to party all the time

party all the time.

Girl
I've seen you in clubs just hanging out and dancing.
You give your number to every man you see.
You never come home at night because you're out romancing.
I wish you bring some of your love home to me.

But my girl wants to party all the time
. . .
My girl wants to party all the time
. . .

Party
party
party she likes to party all the time.
She likes to party all the time -
She lets her hair down
she lets her body down:
She lets her body
she lets her body down.
Party all the time - do you wanna get any party
yeah.
Party all the time - party all the time.

I've been trying to figure out a way to post a song in this thread but couldn't come up with a way to pick a "best" song to include. On the way home from work today I came up with an idea that I decided could work for me... I figured I could post selections from a fictitious, unranked list comprised of my Top 500 Songs. Not that anyone would be interested...

I'll start with Tusk, by Fleetwood Mac, which would probably settle in somewhere in the high to mid 400's. This is a song that has everything: guitar, bass, drums, vocals, a jungle beat, and the USC Trojan Marching Band. There's nothing like a blaring brass section to rock your world! Mac's fall from grace over time wasn't nearly as precipitous as say the transition from Jefferson Airplane to Jefferson Starship to Starship, but in some minds, it wasn't far off. What started out as a straight up British blues band, became a travelling cat fight over time, but it still had plenty of creative juices flowing when they came up with Tusk. I've completely forgotten the story behind the song or why the band performed on the track, but I recall that it was interesting.

First in an occasional series. The information contained within this post may or may not be partially true.

For durability, three songs - Greensleeves, Amazing Grace and Battle Hymn of the Republic.

For best songs composed and/or recorded in my lifetime in no particular order:

American Pie - Don McLean
A Day in the Life - Beatles
Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon and Garfunkel
Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
America the Beautiful - Ray Charles' version
Fields of Gold - Eva Cassidy's version

In much the same way that Tom Fogerty (John's brother) provided an inordinate amount of groove to Creedence Clearwater Revival, I'm part of the group that believes that Dave Grohl made up much more than 1/3 of Nirvana. At least on the musical side. Not to bust on Ringo Starr, but Nirvana with Ringo on the skins would blow. So my next selection is Times Like These by Foo Fighters. There are a ton of hooks here that make this guitar heavy song really poppy, but again, it's still the drums that drive the song in my opinion. The intro alone is enough to rank this pretty easily in the high 200s. In fact I still get blown away listening to the intro and it takes me a couple minutes to climb back down off my aural high. Because of this I'm a little fuzzy on the lyrics. As far as I can make out Grohl is singing from the prospective of a guy with some bizarre inanimate-object identity crisis. To top it all off, not only do we find out that the guy is recovering from amnesia, but we learn at the end of the song that he also suffers from bouts of laryngitis! How classic is that!

Second in an occasional series. The information contained within this post may or may not be partially true.

When discussing the pantheon of early 80s FM-friendly punk/wave/pop/rock, one song always seems comes to mind. At least this is what I'm told, as I wasn't born until 1992. It's hard to call The Kings a one-hit wonder since the "one" song they're famous for is really two songs. In the classic "hey, we're too cheap to pay to get two songs produced so let's put two songs together" tradition, This Beat Goes On/Switching To Glide is a combination of catchy hooks and sing-a-long choruses that begs the question: This Beat Goes On, or Switching To Glide? Everyone favors one part over the other. Try it and see for yourself. It's like asking someone "Maryann or Ginger?" "Farah Fawcett or Cheryl Ladd?" "Salt or Pepa.. or that third girl... what's her name..." And did I mention the USC Trojan Marching Band plays on this track as well? No, just kidding..

Third in an occasional series. The information contained within this post may or may not be partially true.

Oh, and by the way - Switching to Glide, Maryann, Farah, and what's her name.

I do a lot of walking to and from work with my IPod, and I've found over time that the tempo of the music I'm listening to really plays a large role in the amount of time it takes me to get to work on any given day. Just last week as I was making my way through the crowd, one of the meanest grooves ever recorded started playing, and it probably added an extra five minutes to my commute. The Payback by James Brown is one of those mid-tempo funk grooves that won't just get you walking slower in time with the beat, but you'll actually get a little swivel in your hips and shoulders as you go along. At over seven and a half minutes long, I actually grooved myself most of the way around the block before the song ended. Recorded around 1974, The Payback is a song about a cuckolded fellow who's really pissed off at his girl, and really, really pissed off at the guy who's managed to "get down" with her. The break-downs in this song are all very hot, but the song's best feature is that it contains one of the all-time greatest lines, "I don't know karate, but I know ka-razie!!"

Fourth in an occasional series. The information contained within this post may or may not be partially true.

You know how some people can tell you exactly where they were and what they were doing when JFK was shot? or when the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occured? or when they had their first kiss? Well, I can tell you exactly where I was and what I was doing when I first heard Boogie Nights, by Heatwave. I was in high school and I was one of the last people left in the stands after a football game. It was chilly, I had to pee, and I was looking for a bathroom. Ok, so maybe I don't remember ALL the details... the point is, Boogie Nights came on, I heard it for the first time that night, and I had a full bladder. Actually, I spent many years after that night just trying to hear the song again so I could figure out it's name. At the time I would have been embarrassed to acknowledge that I was stalking a disco tune, which is probably why it was so hard for me to pin down the name of the song in the first place. Fortunately I'm over that now, so I can tell you that this is a really great number from the pre-sampling era of 1976. I think. I certainly don't remember being in high school in 1976. Boogie Nights features groovy vocal arrangements, nice drumwork (including a jazzy song intro), and an oddity in the disco genre -- harp. If you listen carefully you can even hear the strings vibrate as the lower notes are being "strummed" or whatever it is you do to a harp. Do you "pluck" a harp?

Have you ever been listening to your mp3 player and come across a song you've never heard before and can't remember ever putting on your player, by a band you know nothing about? Killing in the Name mysteriously showed up on my ipod recently as I was sitting in traffic on my way to work. Having this song come on was like a frying pan in the face, in a good kind of way. Awesome guitar riffs, pointed yet somewhat unintelligible lyrics, and the sheer and intense anger in the vocals really make you wonder what happened to these guys when they were younger. But then I guess you'd expect a little excitability coming from a band called Rage Against The Machine. I'm not completely sure what the song is about, except that I'm fairly certain it's an indictment of KKK members who practice their machinations as badge wearing law enforcement officers. I was surprised to learn that the song is from 1992, which means that I was in even more of a musical daze during that period of my life than I remember. What else? Political implications aside, kids living with their parents should turn this song up to 11. Parents living with their kids should turn this song down to 3. (Note to self: get more RATM.)

Audioslave has a much different feel than RATM. RATM pushed the political lyrics, mostly because of Zach. Now that Zach is gone, I find the new found Audioslave, well, average. There isn't it that something that gives it volume and depth. I find RATM much deeper in quality- due to lyrics, Zach's flow, and of course, the funk of the beat.

RATM pushed the political lyrics, mostly because of Zach.

That's not entirely true. Guitarist Tom Morello and Zack are virtual twins in terms of political philosophy and activism, including its inclusion in the music. The scaling back of political message in the music of Audioslave was a deliberate choice. Interestingly, if you read the Wikipedia entry on Audioslave, it seems to suggest that Cornell was the reason for that, but I've also read interviews with Morello where he seemed to indicate that he wanted to concentrate on the music not the message (of course, he may have just been saying the politically correct thing... no pun intended... band politics here). I say it's interesting because Chris Cornell is no lightweight when it comes to including political message in his music. I actually prefer Audioslave, but by the slimest of margins. The only difference being that the typical rap posturing and grandstanding that Zack inserted grates on my nerves after 5-6 songs.

You can't go wrong with any of Rage's albums. I'd probably start out with their self titled album(it's the one with the guy burning himself on the front).

I haven't bought either of Audioslave's albums but I'd probably go with their first album. The 3 radio releases from this album, Cochise, Like a Stone, and Show me How to Live, were all great songs. Of course you need to be a fan of Soundgarden and Rage to truly appreciate their music.
