it has occurred to me that there isn't really a misc. sports forum here, so i figure this is the best place.

is there anyone here, aside from me, who is a fan of Roller Derby?

i'm talking about the modern version of Derby that began in the early 2000s, where teams like Gotham, Denver, Texas, Oly, and others rule the roost, not the scripted, pro-wrestling style Derby of the 1980s and prior.

You talking about the Oly Rollers, Tree? Yeah, my niece was on their kids team last season. I really enjoyed going to the Rat City Rollergirls bouts in Seattle back in the day - very high production value and very talented women. There is a local team here in Port Angeles, just not the same.

Oly is one of the best in the world. Sadly, this season, they decided to do something weird, and intentionally made sure they didn't qualify for the WFTDA Division 1 championship tournament.

(it is part of a bigger rift in the derby community, even though Oly has denied this being part of the reason).

i think Port Angeles is relatively new, and an "apprentice" team, hence, the dramatic difference.

that being said, the top 10 to 20 teams hold a dramatic talent difference over the next 20, and so on down the road.

balancing out the competition is one of the most important things derby has to do to draw wider appeal.
