Subject: Movies That Surprised You: Good or Bad

  Posted by: Cosmo's Cod Piece - [481152817] Sun, Mar 06, 2005, 16:14

Se7en is on TNT this afternoon and it got me thinking about when I saw it in the theater.

I knew that with Morgan Freeman the movie couldn't be that bad and it was about cops. My wife (then girlfriend) noticed it had Brad Pitt so we were in total agreement on going to the show.

I figured Pitt and Freeman would shoot some bad guys, drink some coffee and call it a day. I had no idea that it would get that deep.

I didn't know that this movie would be so good. I remember walking out of the theater thinking about the ending (not much thinking required in the decision process, but you know what I mean) and I realized just how surprised I was that this movie was that darn good.

I had that happen with From Dusk Till Dawn with Clooney and Tarantino as well. Although that movie doesn't hold a candle to Se7en.

Anybody else in GuruLand have a similar experience?

I was surprised at the depth of:

Europa Europa
Boondock Saints

Both are great films.

Also, Pitch Black just for Vin Diesel.

Speaking of Vin Diesel, I always recommend "Iron Giant" to people who don't know how wonderful animated films can be.

The Sixth Sense had the most surprising ending I have ever seen. I really had no idea that it was going to end like that. After I saw that film, I began trying to guess the plot twist in every subsequent movie I watched. It's become a habit now. I always think the good guy is a bad guy until it's proven otherwise. Thanks to The Sixth Sense, I've never watched movies in the same way.

Watched 'Saw' last night, OMG, it was unbelievable. Somehow I knew very little about this movie, simply saw it as a hot new release and brought it home. It felt so good to be blown away by a movie again, the ending is killer and the story is wicked.

Another twisted movie that surprised me was 'Cube'.

As soon as I saw this thread title, Saw popped into my head, Rand. I love movies that have those twist endings, like those also in Sixth Sense and Fight Club.

I saw the Village at the movies and expected a horror movie. It was much different than I expected. Suspenseful, but not really a horror flick, IMHO. I did like it though.

I bought Saw last week. Messed up movie. I haven't seen one like that for a while.

SPOILER ALERT

Are you trying to tell me the guy (who appeared to be dead on the floor all movie with a gunshot wound to the head) lay motionless for 8+ hours before revealing himself at the end? Carey Ewles was a doctor for goodness sake. He didn't notice the "corpse" breathing in and out? The guy didn't move an inch the whole time? That was pretty far-fetched in my mind. Hard to buy.

Saw might be the best movie that has bad acting. The premise of the movie was so interesting that it didn't matter that Elwes and Glover stunk up the joint.

I'm really hoping there's a Saw 2. I wonder what happened to Elwes and the other guy at the end.

The notion of some maniac called Jigsaw making these puzzles to get out of or die is just too good of an idea to not make a sequel out of.

Maybe with the cult following this movie will develop they can attract some better talent if there's a sequel.

MC: Regarding people being motionless for 8+ hours and then suddenly moving at the end, I think that could describe a lot of coworkers. :)

I get what you're saying though. As far as horror movie "streches" go, that was pretty mild.

Saw's "strech" sure beats Michael Myers getting his head lopped off at the end of Halloween 17 (whichever one had Jamie Lee Curtis as a teacher or dean at a school) and then return in one piece to kill Busta Rhymes in the latest Halloween.

I liked Saw, too. Can't say that I was surprised, tho. About what I expected. I didn't notice that Elwes' acting was all that bad, tho I admit I often see a movie a second time and am surprised at blatent flaws (like awful acting or continuity issues) that I miss the first time.

I was disappointed in Sideways, tho I think if I had seen it without hearing any hype beforehand I probaby would be saying that I was pleasantly surprised.

The new version of FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX, starring Dennis Quaid. I bought it on DVD Sat and watched it last night. Now it can be put into the category of Movies that i'm most ashamed to own.

It was Godawful! A total waste of time and money!

Cosmo, I think the story of SAW was pretty cool. What about that guy trying to get through the barbed wire? Oh man, was that nasty.

I don't know, after the killer gets up there at the end, my mind frantically began asking "So he didn't have to take a leak? He didn't fart? He didn't have to take a deep breath laying there on the ground?" Maybe he sedated himself before the thing started, but then there'd have been even more danger that he would have moved inadvertantly.

And was it just me, or was the killer also a patient in the hospital where the doctor worked? Why didn't they explain that a little more?

And for everyone else, I have a warning about another movie. It's called Vlad, and that's apropos because it rhymes with BAD. My friend rented it from Blockbuster, and mentioned they only had one copy (first sign). It is about Vlad the Impaler, and these 4 grad students trapsing through the Carpathians trying to study him, while Vlad's evil spirit hunts them. Sounds great, but between horrid acting and no discernable plot, I was ready to shut it off after about an hour. Gratuitous nudity in the first 20 minutes had my friend loyally insisting we watch until the end, but I can promise you that you will not have the patience. 2 thumbs way down. Although, the silver lining was that everytime we saw a woman, we got to say "Maybe Vlad will impale her!", which he actually did a couple of different times. Not literally, though. Wink, wink.

How bout the new version of "Flight of the Phonenix". OMG, what a bomb! They actually paid good money to produce that piece of crap?

IMHO it made "Waterworld" look like "Gone with the Wind" or "Cassablanca".

**DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T VIEWED SAW AND WANT TO BE SURPRISED**

MC: Saw's ending blew my mind too. It is obviously a stretch. Just imagine being in that room with all that filth and not having at least the option to vomit or cover your mouth?

Sedation is the most likely explanation. Perhaps via the medication given to him at the hospital as one of Elwes patients?

The killer WAS a patient earlier in the film. The patient that Elwes referred to as "the patient" and not by his name, but then the orderly (who turned out to be his forced goon) reminded Elwes in front of the students what the guys name was.

I'm thinking Jigsaw's motivation was that since he was diagnosed with that brain tumor and Elwes stated that he's only coming in for monitoring only and that he's assumably terminal(?), that he felt he needed to show others not to waste their lives.

My favorite trap involved the woman with that sadistic headgear and she had to get the key out of that guy on the floor. Talk about freaky!!!

I'd have to say that Elwes made it at the end and got help at least for himself. I'm guessing he was too delirious to remember where the other guy was and that he was trapped there forever.

I tried Open Water again, but this time I watched the "Bonus" disc. Gosh did that stink. Two piddly little segments on how to survive in the open water and on sharks. Oh gee thanks.

They said that Open Water was based on a true story in the bonus disc. How do they know this? The ending makes it impossible for anyone to know their story!

CCP, two people went missing while scuba diving in the Pacific and were never found. Obviously they don't know any details, but that's what the premise is based on.

CCP,

I think Open Water started with the line "Based on True Events," not "Based on a True Story." There is no exact story of the two people shown in the movie, but there have been some instances of divers being left in the "open water" accidently. The events are inspired by what could actually have happened, but there is no single story it is based on.

Just a silly play on words.

Regarding Saw: I think the guy was able to stay motionless for so long because he took the drug that he gave to the dude who had the key in his stomach (from the beartrap scenario).

I doubt the doctor made it out alive because he could barely walk and the killer got up just a couple minutes later. If he did make it out, at least it would make for a good sequel...he and Danny Glover teaming up to catch that dude. Like Lethal Weapon with 3 feet.

I always thought Danny Glover ran like he only had one foot in the Lethal Weapons anyway.

He does a lot more running in Predator 2 and runs the same way.

I rented Saw based on this thread. I am not saying I was disappointed. It was an okay movie and it did surprise me at the end, but it wasn't a flick I would think about watching again.

I have added Europa Europa and Boondock Saints to my blockbuster queue. I cannot remember who suggested Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but I rented it and thought it was a great movie. I had no idea what it was about and I certainly think that was the best way to watch this movie.

Seven is a great flick. I didn't see it until it had been out on video for a couple years. The ending was a total trip. I don't think I purposely avoided Brad Pitt movies, but I just watched Fight Club recently and had to watch it immediately a second time. Maybe everyone else saw what was going on, but I was very surprised at the ending.

"Mr. & Mrs. Smith" looks good, because of the female cast member.

Movie(s) I thought were surprisingly good (good being a relative term. Just that these were far and away better than I had "prepared" myself for.),
Spiderman serial
X-Men serial
Shrek (havent seen Shrek2 yet)

Star Wars III

just got back from seeing it, I really didnt like Episodes I or II and wasn't expecting much from this one, in fact up until about 4:30 Wednesday afternoon, I wasn't even sure if I was gonna watch it at all. But a friend had an extra ticket for the midnight showing and it was really pretty good! makes me wanna watch episode 4 again real soon!

As a whole I've never been a huge Star Wars fan, but I'm sure I'll see the finale. Gotta wait for the buzz to die down a little though. To date my favorite installment has been Return of the Jedi.

The whole point of Fight Club was the ending.

Favorite Pitt movie was Legends of the Fall.

I have read this thing site all day and the first thing I wanted to remember to post when I got home was to tell you to make sure you give Fight Club another try and watch it til the end. There is A LOT more going on there then meets the eye... trying not to give anything away :)

If you just watched half of Usual Suspects would you have considered it great? Great parallel...

Its like walking out of Titanic before the ship goes down (2 hours into the damn movie!?) and just assuming thats all that happens and it was just a bunch of people on a nice little cruise lol...

Okay MC (post 3), I finally got around to watching Sixth Sense and have to agree that it was a good movie that surprised me very much at the end. There was a scene early in the movie when Bruce Willis was sitting in the living room with the boy's mother and they appeared to be waiting for the boy to get home. I thought it was a directing slip because my impression was that they weren't talking. Turns out to be well-planned scene. Truthfully, I think MC just liked this movie because he found out he wasn't the only person who sees dead people walking around. =)

I watched Magnolia over the weekend and was totally taken back by it. One of the best movies I've ever seen. It was long at 3 hours but I never got bored with it. Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the premier new age writer/directors along with Wes Anderson, Tarantino, Shymalan, and Kevin Smith. I can't wait til he starts up another movie. Boogie Nights and Punch Drunk Love were great and I haven't seen Hard Eight yet.

I remember watching that movie 4-5 years ago after you recommended it one night in the chatroom. IIRC, it was pretty funny. Too bad it'll probably never be shown on TV again. I would definitely say that Magnolia was a love it or hate it type movie. The way the multiple stories were weaved together was very similar to Pulp Fiction. The movie is about real life, real people, and real coincidences. The prologue and epilogue were perfect. I loved how the camera constantly was moving. That aspect reminded me of a Scorsese film.

Yeah, I really liked Magnolia, but haven't watched it in a while - it's one of those movies you really need to be in the mood for. Speaking of the moving camera, there's an easter egg outtake on the dvds where they were doing a slow pan into John C Reilly's bedroom but instead of sitting on his bed crying or whatever he was supposed to be doing, he was mooning the camera... hilarious especially after the minute long slow pan into the room.

Hard Eight is also very good. Definitely very well-developed characters starring Mr. Reilly again and Philip Baker Hall who's also in Magnolia.. I remember I had seen this shortly before seeing Jackie Brown in the theater, and was disappointed in Jackie Brown (which was also character-driven) by comparison... but it grew on me after multiple viewings.

I think I see the problem here: I don't give much of a crap about artistic merit or cinemagraphic techniques. I want a good story with above average acting talent. Magnolia was not a story, really. Not in the vain I am used to and enjoy, at any rate.

Of course, neither was Eyes Wide Shut and I liked that quite alot. It probably had something to do with Nicole Kidman showing off her "feminine side".

Just flat out hilarious!!! only watched it because at the time my girlfriend was into all those stupid horror movies that are all exactly the same lately and she thought it was like one of them... She DIDN'T like it which was the sign of a great film!!! It was original and smart and the first new movie I have laughed outloud at that I can remember... its a good purchase because its one I can watch over and over - good drinking buddy film.

but be forewarned its VERY bloody and gorey and frankly even gross in some parts
... but its so over the top its funny because its playing on all the horror movie cliches. So just make sure the kids aren't around.

gonna have to see that Earthbound movie with Electra.. sounds like its up my alley.

Went and saw Batman Begins and it was pretty damn good I thought. It was very dark and intense and told a good story and actually had me interested which is more than most movies lately... A good "prequel".

Anyone more familiar with the comic, is the story consistent with that? (the way he went through training to become Batman)... cause I never remembered anything about him disappearing for 7 year etc and then returning.

movie that surprised me - King Kong Lives (1986).
surprised me that it existed.

stars linda hamilton. deserves honorable mention as one of the worst movies of all time. some movies are intentionally bad just to get a few laughs, but they can never compare to a movie like this. this movie is so bad (unintentionally as far as i can tell) I was in tears. couldn't believe that this movie existed. how could linda hamilton go from terminator to this? I can't even begin to explain why it's so bad. PLEASE - someone go rent this - get some friends and some beer together - and then try to explain its existence to me. I need to make some kind of sense out of it.

interesting trivia concerning this movie:
Peter Michael Goetz's cheque for post release royalties came to 3 cents. He has it stapled to the film poster in his house, having never cashed it

Hide and Seek with Robert DeNiro and Dakota Fanning...

I bought this at Best Buy yesterday and it was awesome. DeNiro was outstanding and Fanning was not overshadowed by him at all.

Great plot twist and the DVD has multiple endings with your usual treats of deleted scenes, commentary, etc.

Excellent supporting cast as well with Elizabeth Shue (Karate Kid, Adventures in Babysitting) and Famke Jansen (Jean Grey from X-Men).

Bought and watched Shaun of the Dead----while I liked it, it wasn't as funny as I had hoped for. The relationship stuff was too deep for me at times. My wife and my seven year old niece kept bugging me to take them to see the Wonka movie.

The Willy Wonka movie was downright hysterical. Johnny Depp nailed it. It was a Tim Burton movie that not only was I able to stomach, but I'm eagerly awaiting the DVD release.

I can now see why attendance at movies are down. We went to a drive-in theater and watched the movie sitting on top of my wife's SUV.

Two adult tickets = $14
One child ticket = $3
Pre-movie Dairy Queen = $11
Dinner for three at an average restaurant = $30
2-Liter of pop = $2

Cost me $60 to go to the show last night. The DVD will most likely be $20 and if you tack on a $20 pizza, the total cost is still only $40.

Ditto on Million Dollar Baby.
We watched it last nite and thought it was a very, very good movie.
No wonder it did as well as it did.

Definite gotta see if you haven't.
Not like any other fight movie I have ever seen.

Just saw Million Dollar Baby... great movie. Tough to watch at times, but great.

Willy Wonka this weekend in IMAX, can't wait.

Just ordered Mating Habits of the Earthbound Humans from Netflix after I couldn't find it any Blockbuster so that should be here for the weekend too.

Watching Finding Neverland as soon as I type this... I anticipate that being good as well, but I will note that tommorrow.

I guess I'll have to see Hide and Seek now, been working with a husband & wife this week, the wife had her daughter with her all week, and the little girl seemed a bit different. Today I ask the little girl if she had seen Willie Wonka (very funny), and the mother spoke up and asked if I'd seen War of the Worlds, in which I said yes. The lady said that her brother's daughter was Dakota Fanning! So, maybe one day this little girl will join her two cousins on the big screen?

Up to today I couldn't tell you who Dakota Fanning was, I'll have to take some time now and watch a few of her other movies, though I have seen Man on Fire, I just didn't take any interests in the little girl.

Tim Robbins was great as the crazy, evil guy. Almost like a the exact opposite of the guy he played in Shawshank Redemption.

Among the movies we've watched lately, the absolute best was The Great Raid, although Benjamin Bratt isn't the greatest actor, the movie was wonderful!

Also, North Country - outstanding!!!!

The Machinist was dark and intense, but a bit plodding. Amazing that Christian Bale could loose so much weight and still have the energy to act.

Walk The Line very enjoyable and since I saw Johnny Cash in the late 60's, it was well portrayed and pretty accurate for that time period. A shame that Joaquin Phoenix didn't get the Oscar, he deserved it.

GO - I watched the Aristocrats last week - my wife watched the first ten minutes with me; then she made me turn it off and I finished it later... It was pretty good if a bit repetetive; the extra features where they told different jokes were almost better. If you haven't seen Comedians of Comedy, that's another very good look at stand-up behind the scenes.

and, I picked up The Machinist from the Bookmobile last week, but haven't watched it yet. Can't beat the convenience of having a busload of free movies to rent driven to your back yard.

Last night I watched The Constant Gardener. Nice name, pff.

It was a decent movie. There was a shroud of mystery surrounding most of it, but it wasn't extremely suspenseful. Ralph Fiennes was very good and I see why he was nominated for the Oscar. But he was also a bit of a weenie and somewhat timid, in contrast to his role as the Red Dragon. Come to think of it, he'll always seem timid compared to that role, I guess.

Oh well; it's not the best movie I've ever seen, but your wife might like it.

(re 89,94)as a general rule, if it's a movie based on a play that was based on a movie, just watch the original movie..

I thought Constant Gardener was decent, but actually my wife didn't care for it (it was made by the same director as the excellent City of God). Speaking of my wife, she's been out of town the past week so I've been catching up on movies I know she won't even watch - just saw The Hostel, good horror movie similar to Saw, and The Warriors - apparently a cult classic that had slipped by me. up next, Hustle and Flow and The Jacket...

Its funny, does anyone else read Peter Schragers "Wednesday Buffet" on Foxspots? I used to be a devout Page 2 and Bill Simmons guy, but lately I find myself looking forward to Wednesday Buffet every single week. His mix of music/sports/movies/tv/celebrity news is always good. The reason I mention it is because he makes a bit of an inside joke at the end of the column using a reference from The Aristocrats and it left my buddies and I cracking up...

Ahh, 'The Warriors.' That was actually a Bill Simmons recommendation that I loved. I'd wanted to see it for a while, since so many musical performers that I like (read: hip hop groups) reference that movie all the time. It was as good as I could have hoped. A really nice mix of camp and classic.

I watched Munich the other day. I liked it, but it wasn't Spielberg's greatest work. Some very good scenes, and some very well-done suspense scenes. The movie tended to drag, and there wasn't much closure, if you need that sort of thing. But worth watching to learn about that era of history, while keeping in mind it's "based" on a true story.

Dang. I forgot about the stick around after the credits thing.

I enjoyed the movie, it just got too over-the-top, and the action could no longer be supported by the ever-shrinking plot-base. Sort of the Matrix problem. When you have no boundaries (i.e. you can make up a new mutant and new, amazing powers on demand - Deus ex Machina), you have to self-impose limits, or the movie starts to feel a bit too farcicle.

I had to look up farcical. I don't know if it is one of those words I will ever become comfortable using and I am a big fan of using ludicrous with a Mike Tyson voice, but it's always cool to learn a new word.

I enjoyed X-Men III. Lots of action and great special effects. I don't want to talk about it too much and spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it, but the scene where Magneto "moved" the bridge was pretty cool. You have to keep in mind that this is a comic book so farcicality is to be expected. Okay, I got a chance to use it and took it. =)

LOL- When I first did a search it took me to this site: http://www.velonews.com/phorum3/read.php?f=2&i=149129&t=149129

I read down a bit and saw this, "You don't frighten us, English pig-dogs! Go and boil your bottom, sons of a silly person. I blow my nose at you, so-called Arthur King, you and all your silly English k-nnnnniggets. Thpppppt! Thppt! Thppt!...I don't wanna talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper! I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!"

I know you have quoted this movie before so started to wonder if it was just a funny "made-up" word and I was missing the joke. I kept reading through the thread and figured it out, though.

I saw Y Tu Mama Tambien this weekend. After all of the fanfare I thought it would be better. I think it made Mexicans look awful, but oh well. I suppose that's not that big of a deal to most.

Last night I watched an indie film called Dotting the "i". I liked that a good bit. Interesting twists at the end, and I recommend checking it out--no name brand actors to speak of.

And X-Men 3 I liked. I thought they did some real neat things with it, and there were some very good scenes. I also cannot comment on a few things without spoiling it for the rest, but there were some deaths that left me a little surprised.

In the commercials for the new Superman film, they've been playing the old Superman symphonic overture. I hope it's in the film. I loved that old song, and they need to somehow bridge the gap between the old ones and the new one. The uniform is totally different, so the music could do it if they recycle it.

Picked up the kids movie Doogal for my little one on Saturday. It was very very bad. Far too violent for a G movie, for one, and their idea of humor seemed to be to randomly quote other movies throughout--sometimes oddly out-of-context. The other movies were PG kids movies that the kids watching probably wouldn't get, and were too out of touch for the adults to enjoy. Stay away!

Syriana was bad, huh? I was thinking I'd like to see that. Hmmm.

I watched the new Amityville Horror, since I liked the old one. It scared me. I watched it at night alone, which was fine. It was good and scary. I was surprised at the amount of death in the film--there wasn't much. Well, after the first few scenes anyway. But that was almost like a flashback.

Anyway, it was worth watching if you like frightening horror movies that are very creepy. Or if you want to watch Ryan Reynolds try to be creepy rather than goofy. He did fine. He was still a little goofy, though.

Yuchh, Syriana is sitting at the house now.

Also enjoyed 16 Blocks.

V for Vendetta was really good, I was actually surprised. I only really even saw it because I love Natalie Portman, but the movie was really good.

Just finished watching 16 blocks. Not bad, but Bruce Willis is getting OLD!!!!!

Now its time to watch a little of The Office to see what the big deal is. I love the American Steve Carrell version, but I always here the Brittish version is better...we'll see!

Running Scared: Little expectations going in seeing as not a Paul Walker fan, but the movie is EXCELLENT! If I had to some it up in one word it would be action. The movie is constanly introducing new characters to the plot and storylines with every new scene.

Constant Gardner--the first 42 minutes are excrutiatingly bad. Could have done it in probably 12. Almost turned it off like I did the Baxter, but kept watching because of the comment from PD saying it was good. The last part of the movie wasn't bad. But overall, I would say it was below par.

Diary of a Mad Black Woman--this surprised me. Thought it was going to be a comedy and it wasn't--though there are a few funny moments. It is a drama. But it was ok actually. Kind of liked it.

Lemony Snicket: Series of Unfortunate Events: Very Dark. I didn't care for it too much, but the wife liked it. Not really a kids movie though--esp. younger kids.

The Baxter--HORRIBLE! Turned it off it was so bad.

Got some of the new releases coming in this week. We shall see...

Katietx,
Tell Sarge I said to just let go, Memories of a Geisha was great.

Wouldn't classify it as a chick flick.

Also, tell Sarge to add "The World's Fastest Indian" to his NetFlix queue.

It is a true story about Burt Munro, a New Zealander and his running an old Indian at Bonneville during Speed Trials Week.

We watched it last nite and really enjoyed it.

Probably has a fairly limited draw as far as those that would like it, but think Sarge will.

Just saw "Pirates of the Caribbean Deadman's Chest" I did'nt think it was nearly as good as the first installment. Way too long, and too much computer generated animation for my taste.

It had some good moments and a few laughs. Depp was pretty good, and the Davey Jones character was well done. If you're into non stop action and sword play it's a great movie. 3 out of 4 stars.

Saw a bunch of movies lately.

40 Year Old Virgin - Outright hysterical. Wedding Crashers was better, but WC is better than a lot of comedies.
Hostel - For horror buffs, it's fantastic.
Munich - Extremely good. Slow to start, but the movie focuses on character a lot so it's justified. The ending screenshot is very powerful.

I saw Sixteen Candles for the first time and hated it.

I would like to see World Trade Center, but I want to know what Oliver Stone or the studio is planning on doing with the profits first.

You just saw Sixteen Candles?!
Sixteen Candles was good in it's day. It holds a certain nostalgic greatness to those who saw it 20 years ago. You can't judge it against newer teen comedies; many of them draw elements from all the early John Hughes catalog.

Bringing up an interesting discussion point:
How did the '80s rank amongest the decades regarding the "teen comedy" genre? The only other decade that immediately comes to mind that contributed to the genre would be the '60s (Annette Funicello "Beach" movies). Discuss...

There was a debate at work raging on about which 80's high school was the greatest. I said The Breakfast Club. Love that movie.

It turned out to be a tie between The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles in our unofficial voting system. So I decided to watch it.

The 80's is far superior than any era I can think of. Now since you said "teen comedies", here's a list off the top of my head in no order.

The Great Outdoors (has a teen love story in it)
The Breakfast Club
Uncle Buck
Pretty In Pink
Teen Wolf
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Classic)

Who is the the King of '80s Teen Comedy, John Cusack or Anthony Michael Hall?

John Cusack (no particular order)-
Sixteen Candles
Better Off Dead
Hot Pursuit
One Crazy Summer
The Sure Thing
Class
Tapeheads
Say Anything...

Anthony Michael Hall (no particular order)-
Sixteen Candles
The Breakfast Club
Weird Science
Johnny Be Good
National Lampoon's Vacation (does this qualify?)

I lean more towards Cusack. While many of his characters and roles were similar to the point of type-casting (Hot Pursuit, The Sure Thing, Better Off Dead, One Crazy Summer, Say Anything...)- those movies and roles are genre defining even though none of them carries the weight of The Breakfast Club or the lead in Sixteen Candles.

I forgot that Anthony Michael Hall was in National Lampoon's Vacation. Randy Quaid was the real star of those movies, IMHO.

Nothing beats the Christmas one when he's emptying the toilet tank from his trailer into the sewer system. Chevy Chase comes outside. He looks at Chevy and yells with that shit eating grin, "SHITTER'S FULL!!!" Awesome.

Gotta go with Cusak as well. I agree that he basically plays the same guy just under different circumstances. One Crazy Summer is an often overlooked comedy. But if I could only watch one 80's teen comedy the rest of my life it would be The Breakfast Club.

I had thought Molly Ringwald was in more 80's comedies but these were all I could find on imdb.com.

Sixteen Candles
The Breakfast Club
Pretty In Pink

Inside Man was just ok for me. Too long and hated the ending. Had a ton of deleted scenes and that also made teh movie choppy at times. Albeit, it's better than some other movies I've had the displeasure of viewing...Manderly, turned it off after teh first 10 minutes. Brick, not very good--though watched it all the way through, Chapelle's Block Party--no comedy just a documentary about the making of a musical block party, She's the Man wasn't bad, Lord of War was bad, Final Destination 3 wasn't good, The Benchwarmers wasn't that good but did make me laugh a few times so you might want to check it out. Definitely overhyped though.

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT rent The New World...I finally turned it off after 2 hours. Plooding and very pretentious. I know that some folks think he's a great director, but honestly I think he would make a better nature photographer.

The music wasn't good, and was so loud at times that the dialog was totally missed.

Watched 8 Below and enjoyed it. Knew the storyline which didn't ruin anything; and the dogs were amazingly trained. Good movie for the kids, altho some of the dogs don't make it and that could be upsetting for little ones.

I thought Talladega Nights was kind of dissapointing. Baron Cohen (Ali G) definitely stole the movie. And speaking of Cohen, I can't wait for Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan to come out.

boiken, you can't go wrong with Akira Kurosawa. Seven Samurai is his masterpiece. If you want to see the inspiration (movie Lucas ripped off) for Star Wars see Hidden Fortress. For newer foreign films I'd check out City of God, Amores Perros, and Run Lola Run.

MC, V had some swear words, and some slightly graphic fight scenes, but I still think it was rated PG-13.

I actually think I am going to purchase the movie. The dialogue is great (particularly the speech by V early in the movie), the fight scenes need to be seen on a big screen (and not the back of an airplane chair), and the story makes you think, as it is applicable to today's world (albeit in an exaggerated way).

I fell asleep during Scary Movie 4. The first scene was funny, but after that pretty stupid. Not horrible, just not that funny. Got RV but haven't seen it yet. Trying to get C and Shaggy Dog but Long Wait on them still.

Worst movie I have EVER seen is Date Movie. Honestly that was going to be the first movie EVER that I have turned off, but I me and my wife just kept saying it can't get any worse, and then it just became seeing how HORRIBLE it was going to end up. And that's the last movie we've rented, ruined everything the rest of our lives!!! :'P

I have had a couple friends tell me Date Movie was the worst movie they have ever seen.

Sarge, I enjoyed A Knight's Tale with Heath Ledger and Shannyn Sossamon. She is a hotty. Rufus Sewell and Paul Bettany were hilarious. It wasn't a masterpiece, but I enjoyed watching it. I guess I will have to watch New World now.

that reminds me I was going to buy V for Vendetta, as Circuit City had it for 12.99, but I think it's too late now. best new movie I've seen in a while.

For those who are into strange movies, I just saw Palindromes (by Todd Solondz who also directed Welcome to the Dollhouse and Happiness). Not quite as disturbing as his others but definitely odd. About a 13 y/o girl who wants to get pregnant - and she is played by like 8 different actors (of different age, sex, race, etc) throughout the movie.

Just watched Das Boot. It was extremely long 3.5 hrs, but it was good.

To be fair, I was doing something else while V for Vendetta was going on so perhaps that's why I couldn't totally get into it. But I'm not much on the dark films. I watched Brick. I made it all the way to the end, but I didn't particularly care for it. Guess it all depends on taste. If you're into those film noirs and weird movies you might love it. I tried to watch Film Geek this week and my suggestion would be to stay far far away from it--but again, others might want to check it out.

I loved United 93. I had seen all the A&E documentaries of all the different airlines, events, etc. but this was even better.

Let's say you are dying to get your wife/partner to accept your suggestion of having a threesome, or some other sexual shenanigans, but you can't figure out the proper way to bring up the subject. Here's your chance - take her to Shortbus, a new movie by John Cameron Mitchell. A sex-positive, explicit romp, who could possible NOT want to join your local "underground salon" and partake in the revelry after seeing just how much fun is involved?

Personally, the girlfriend and I are waiting for it to come out on DVD; we're not going out like Pee Wee.

I went and saw Departed based on a couple posts from above. Like J, I didn't know anything about it other than what was said above. I wouldn't say it was the best movie I've seen in the last ten years, but it was a very good movie. Jack Nicholson was great and I admit that I was surprised how well DiCaprio and Matt Damon played their roles. Mark Wahlberg was a good character too. Thumbs up from me.

I can't remember in what thread someone suggested This Is Spinal Tap, but I just watched it (20+ years after it came out) and it was great. I think with all the real "rockumentaries" that have come out the last 6-7 years, that it might have turned out better not watching it until now. A couple lines from the movie that will always make me laugh:
"These go to 11"
"The answer is none. None more black"

I have to buy this DVD.

Recently saw the previews for that on TF. It went onto ouor Netflix list immediately. Thanks for the good word on it.

Watched "All the Kings Men" last night. (Sean Penn) Excellent job on his part. Solid movie, well worth seeing.

The Descent was very nice. A little too dark in terms of the actual lighting, but I do recommend it if you're in the mood for a scare.

Good to hear about "All the Kings Men" sarge. Sean Penn is a great actor.

I made the ultimate sacrafice, gave up a day of NFL football and went to see "Dream Girls" with Mrs. Flood. To my suprise I enjoyed it very much. Eddie Murphy really can sing. Great music and solid story about the old days of R & B. Loosely based on Motown, Dianna Ross, Quincy Jones, Barry Gordy and many of the great soul preformers of that era.

RE Little Mis Sunshine. I didn't like it until the very end.

RE The Descent. Didn't care for it. Really not much of a plot either.

Loved World Trade Center. Liked Invincible. Liked Beerfest. Really liked Superman Returns. Hated Scanner Darkly.

perfume -- loved it except for hoffman. different but great.

borat -- funny but it could have been funnier. guess i've been too many utube clips. a little disappointed.

casino royale -- dumb ending but craig is a great bond. loved the more physical role.

run lola run -- haven't seen it for years, but it's just as great everytime. just goes to show how random events/timing can change everything.

super ex-girlfriend -- crap. saw it on a plane.

snapdragon -- yes, there was a time pam anderson was considered hot.

The Fluid house was in movie mode this past few weeks (not much going on with flu bug running through house)...

The Game - Rented this '02 flick, looking for a great movie and got one.

Superman Returns - Everything else new was checked out, but this one wasn't. I see why now. Complete snoozer.

Galaxy Quest - Had never seen this but had been meaning to. Good for what it was, but am not real certain what that is.

Cars - Watched this about 100 times with the little Fluids. I love this movie. Going to buy the soundtrack sooner or later.

Zathura - Cleaning the house, found this one under the DVD player, so we stuck it in. What I love about this movie is that its Sci-Fi without the CGI overkill. Old School movie making. Fun movie with the kids.

Little Miss Sunshine - Loved this show. A real family. Ending was just great.

Night at the Museum - Just a fun flick. Went with oldest boy and he enjoyed it.

I was disappointed with The Good Shepherd. The acting was good, it was just that the plot was so schizophrenic with the jumping between periods of time that it made it more difficult to follow.....and in the end, there was just no real resolution to tie it all together nicely.

RSF,
The Game is a good movie. I had no idea what it was about before watching it and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Superman Returns - It was okay, but I'll admit to liking all the superhero stuff a bit too much.

Galaxy Quest - It's been a while since I've seen this one, but I remember it being fun and entertaining.

Cars & Night at the Museum- Watched and enjoyed both with my son.

Zathura & Little Miss Sunshine - I have both and have been meaning to watch them (along with about 30 other movies). Will move both of these up on the list.

Other recent movies I've seen:
Accepted - Mostly funny and yet very predictable.

Talladega Nights - Funnier than I thought it would be, but I didn't have high expectations. Who knew that there would actually be a plot to go with the comedy?

The Covenant- I expected more. The story felt rushed. Some of the special effects were good, but overall a disappointing movie.

I also want to echo all the Lucky Number Slevin backers from above. That is one of the better movies I have seen in a while. If you haven't seen it, don't read another word about it and go rent it. You won't be disappointed.

Just watched this movie via netflix. Whoa man, I loved it. A poor man's Anchorman, which is a classic. I thouroughly recommend the DVD, as the gag reel, line-o-rama's, and outtakes are phenomenal. I actually cried during the gag reel.

"Shut up Chip before I hit you in the back of the head with a shovel." Walker and Texas Ranger are the best.

Talladega Nights was pretty good. I was hoping for a classic like The Waterboy, but it's still worth seeing.

I love it when he prays. He only does it to "Baby Jesus". Then they have an argument about it.

"Baby Jesus, all snuggled in your crib with your DVD player watching Baby Einstein videos learning your shapes and colors,....."

SHAKE 'N BAKE BABY!!!

Superman Returns was....eh....OK. The Christopher Reeve movies are superior (with IV being the exception).

I watched King Kong on HD-DVD and that was amazing.

Caution: Once your kids sees Cars, you will be forced to watch it over and over again. I bet I've seen it 100 times already--maybe much more. I am getting tired of it, but it really is one of the best movies of the year from an adult's perspective as well.

Beer League was ok. Had some funny moments. Naked Mile about the same. Not the greatest, but a good time passer. I like Taladega Nights.

Was supposed to get Snakes and the Covenant but they bypassed me on my Netflix queue so may see them later this month. I am not expecting much from either but they both look interesting. I've heard bad reports on Snakes, but I'm still getting it. Netflix has been slower this month as expected with all the holiday mail and the added no-mail days the past week or two.

We enjoyed Ong-Bak. Not part of the recent wave of visually-spectacular martial arts flicks from Hong Kong, such as Hero and House of Flying Daggers. No wires used to depict characters who can almost fly. Just a very good martial arts/action movie out of Thailand, showcasing muay-thai style fighting. Lead Tony Jaa is very good and does not use a stunt double.

Ong-Bak 2 is currently in production.

I saw Some Kind of Monster a few weeks ago. It was very good. I think even non-fans of Metallica would enjoy it.

I personally enjoyed The Aristocrats, although it's not hilarious. There are some funny bits, and it is a documentary, so be forewarned. George Carlin plays a prominent role.

I saw The Descent Friday evening. That was one of the better horror films I've seen in the last few years. It's not fantastic, but it was better than average. Clastrophobics beware.

I like alot of movies but I really disliked Garden State. It came off as very pretentious and alot of times just seemed like an avertisement for The Shins. These quotes really killed it for me:

"You gotta hear this one song, it'll change your life I swear."
-Natalie Portman, about to play The Shins

Zach Braff: Hey Albert? Good luck exploring the infinite abyss.
Cave Guy: Thanks. Hey, you too.
--Garden State

"And I can remember, even as a little kid, thinking to myself, This is love... this is love."
-Zach Braff

"That's life. If nothing else, its life. It's real, and sometimes it ****in' hurts, but it's life, and it's pretty much all we got. "
-Natalie Portman

"This is life."
-Zach Braff

"For the first time let's just allow ourselves to be whatever it is that we are."
-Zach Braff

"This isn't a conversation about this being over. I'm not like, putting a period at the end of this. I'm putting like... an ellipsis on it."
-Zach Braff

Didn't care much for Garden State. Didn't hate it, just didn't do anything for me. Portman would look even better if she'd gain a little weight.

Didn't care for Clerks 2 either. I knew I wouldn't but watched it anyhow.

At least I got to teh end of both of them.
