Subject: Tiger's injury

Has anyone been able to find any analysis of whether Tiger's injury will cost him the #1 ranking in the world? He has such a large lead that it seems possible he may rank first the whole time he is out, but I haven't been able to confirm or deny this anywhere.

It's impossible to tell. There are a number of factors at play. It may depend on how long he's out and how he plays when he gets back. It may depend on how Mickelson, the only one with any real chance of catching him anytime soon, plays the rest of the year. As tournaments come and go, he will start to drop as this year's result (DNP) replaces 2007's results (4 wins, a T2, a T6 and a T12) for the balance of the year.

All that may be moot, however. I believe there is a minimum number of rounds a golfer must play to be ranked. Tiger doesn't play much these days . . . just 26 rounds this year. He may drop off becuase of inactivity and Phil gets it by default.
