Subject: Hip Check v4.11 - Quick Player Info

  Posted by: RecycledSpinalFluid - [35928913] Fri, Feb 01, 2002, 16:46

This was originally developed for hoops (since I'm not playing hockey). With a recent rash of injuries to my players, I realized what a pain it is to lookup data on players at all the different sites. I wished there was an easy way to say "Open all pages related to Joe Schmoe", click a button and BLAM! There they are. Well, here is what I came up with. Definitely just a beginning point, but better than nothing.

Some low-down:
0.) This was originally only operational if you were a GuruPatron, but since Guru does not directly support hockey statistics, I have removed this restrictor. While not directly supporting the stats, he has provided a fine forum for all to post in. If you are not already a GuruPatron, please consider it (me included).

1.) To automagicly select all boxes for a specific site, click on the below its name.

2.) The ALL will open up all the possible pages for the specific player (the individual check boxes do not get selected).

3.) If you are running on a dialup, this might be slightly painful. A lot of simultaneous pages loads at one time may cause some to not load.

I think that is about it.

Good Luck.

One more by-the-wayer, the Local Papers are from Rotoworld's local paper page, if you have better sources, post a URL and we can update the list.

Wow! Not only are us checkers blessed with the eminence of RSF, but we get another one of his nifty roto aids.

RSF: sorry my yankees had to show you that your season was truly a fluke (c'mon, that line-up was all smoke and mirrors), but you are a gentleman and a techie scholar.

cheers.

It worked like a charm. In a real way. Thanks.

I have robert lang on one team and he apparently did not play on 1/30...I could not find anything on him in the Pittsburgh papers or Rotoworld...but using YOUR tool, one of the sites had a comment that he had to miss 2 games due to oral surgery (a common hockey injury, please!). They said he would likely be ready after the all-star break.

The news I needed. The tool we all need.

Thanks again, RSF.

Where is it again? I'm looking in the Other Hockey pages drop down. Don't see it. Woops... See it now! But is only in bottom drop down. Will you put it in top also?

Fixed a couple of major bugs with Official Team pages and CBS.Sportsline team pages. Some team names were abbreviated different than I had thought, so the pages were not opening correctly. Should be fixed now.

Please report all bugs here. I'll fix em when I can. Thanks again and Good Luck.

Now that you have (or haven't) used this thing for a while, I'd like some feedback on it. A couple of random questions, in preparation for updating it for baseball:

What kind of frequency do you use this thing (including none)?
How could it be improved upon (features? ease of use?)
Whatever else you have to say.

Thanks.

personally, i'd like to see a frame-based approach, where you load each page into the same window and then select which to view along a tab on the side, perhaps.. more programming work, but it'd be a whole lot nicer :)

Now, quik_ag, that is a start to a pretty good idea. Instead of regular frams (I don't think FRAMEs work in this forum, although I've never tested it), I think I'd use IFRAMEs and hide/unhide them depending on the button pressed (in the "tab on the side" thing). It would actually be more code-efficient, I think. I think I'll play around with that idea. Thanks.

frames wouldn't work in this forum, no.. but if you popped open a new browser window, they'd be fine. The trouble with iframes is that they're only supported by the newer versions of ie.. you'd need some tricky coding to get it to work with netscape. frame's i think would be the way to go, although if you're married to iframes, i think a layered div would work better.
