Lots of players missing games with the flu these days. Some players with new aches & pains as reported by RotoWorld are:
Jovanovski - will miss the next 4-6 weeks with a broken left heel.
Niinima - Will miss at least one more game with a bruised knee
Mats Sundin - questionable for New Year's Eve game against Vancouver, reports the Toronto Star.
Alexander Mogilny - questionable for New Year's Eve game due to a sore back, reports the Toronto Sun.
Maybe Mats & Alex are just going out on the town together to party!
Gagne - Concussion has him out a week
Hedberg - ready to return to Penguin's net, but Aubin to get Atlanta start

Leafs somehow manage to pull out a win despite not having Sundin, Mogilny, Renburg, or Pilar in the lineup, and sustaining new injuries to Antropov and Jackman during the game. Jackman's looked pretty horrible, it looked like he twisted his ankle pretty badly but he was back on the ice later in the game.
Belfour was amazing, particularly in the 2nd and 3rd periods. He stopped 5 breakaways during the game.

What's with the Penguins. They were playing well winning 3 in a row, then lose to Atlanta & now blow a 2-0 lead to Columbus. Mario, Kovalev & Straka managed a total of 1 Assist. I'm committed to holding them thru their Fri/Sat back to back . . so I hope they snap out of it!

Ookpik . . .that was quite a comeback by the Leafs. Down 3-1 and their top 4 goal scorers out of the lineup (After Andropov's injury) . . I figured they would just get steam-rolled.
Belfour held them in til the Canucks punched themselves out.
Svehla has to sharpen up a lot. At least 3 of the Canuck breakaways were from guys sneaking in behind him and picking up long passes.

Coyotes' goalie woes:
In a span of just 24 hours, the Coyotes lost starting goalie Sean Burke and backup Brian Boucher to knee injuries and were forced to recall minor leaguers Jean-Marc Pelletier, Zac Bierk and Colin Zulianello from across North America. Boucher suffered a deep bone bruise after getting hit by a puck in practice Friday morning. Later that night, during a 40-save performance in a 4-1 win over Detroit, Burke suffered what tests revealed a day later to be sprained medial collateral ligaments. Burke, 4-0 since his return from a 29-game stint on the injured list with an ankle sprain, will be lost for two to three weeks. Boucher should be ready for Wednesday's game in Chicago.

Since I have all three of these players and found out my research this a.m. (Sunday):
Ryan Smyth will likely not play Monday due to a sore shoulder (he was out Saturday).
Zhamnov is also day to day after missing Saturday's game and will likely not play Monday.
Jagr injured his groin during Saturday's game and missed the 3rd period and is listed as day to day. He has a long history of groin injuries.
All info was from respective local newspapers.

Jagr's injury might not be just his groin. He got banged into the open door section of the boards in Fri. night's game against TOR. With the B2B, he probably didn't fully recover from that hit (from which, he skated off the ice fairly slow). Last night, he didn't seem to be full power and, IIRC, he left the ice slumping a bit towards his right side, which was the side he ran into the open door with. FYI.

Flyers' Williams Expected to Miss Season
Flyers forward Justin Williams will have reconstructive knee surgery that is expected to keep him out the rest of the season. The 21-year-old right wing injured his left knee Saturday in a victory over Tampa Bay. He will have an operation to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament and will miss four-to-eight months. On Sunday, the Flyers recalled forward Mark Greig from the AHL's Philadelphia Phantoms to take Williams' spot. Greig has 13 goals and 27 assists in 124 career NHL games.

Belfour and Kidd are both out for today's game. Tellqvist to start, and the Leafs have called up Hodson, who has gone 3.10 GAA in 3 (!) games in the AHL, to be the backup to the backup to the backup goalie.
It's scary to think he might actually see time in between the pipes.

The struggling Carolina Hurricanes suffered a major blow Tuesday, losing leading scorer and No. 2 centre Rod Brind'Amour indefinitely to a wrist injury. Brind'Amour, who leads Carolina with 37 points (14-23) in 48 games, could be out for up to three months. He suffered the injury on his right wrist during a first-period faceoff in Monday night's 5-3 loss to St. Louis. Morris may be eyeing lost season
Saturday, January 25, 2003 - So much for Derek Morris' belief he had nothing more than a shiner to his right eye.
One day after saying he didn't have any fractures around his right eye, the Colorado Avalanche defenseman Friday learned he indeed does, and his season could be over because of it. Morris has what the Avalanche said is a "blowout fracture" of his right orbital area, and he will be sidelined indefinitely. "Derek sustained a facial fracture around the eye that will require minor surgery," Avalanche head athletic trainer Pat Karns said.
Winger Serge Aubin also sustained a bruised foot during Thursday night's game and is out indefinitely. Morris and Aubin did not accompany the team on a five-game road trip that was scheduled to begin Saturday night in Toronto.

Flyers injuries
Goalie Roman Cechmanek, who left Thursday's practice early with back stiffness, didn't start last night. Cechmanek did go through yesterday's morning skate and reported some progress. "There is some soreness," he said. "I feel I am 80 percent. I could straighten it up better today."
After last night's game, Hitchcock said Cechmanek would start tonight in Boston. He also said Simon Gagne would not make the trip after suffering a groin pull last night. Gagne is listed as day-to-day.

Bruins notes
Winger P.J. Axelsson, who sustained a bruise and a sprained joint low in his back when he crashed into the boards Monday against Washington, skated yesterday. "For about 10 seconds," he said. "It was no good. I just couldn't push off." It seems likely Axelsson will not return to the lineup until after the All-Star break next weekend.
The same is true for winger Martin Lapointe (groin strain), who only is doing light biking.

Anyone else still holding Havlat? Sounds like even if he plays tonight he won't be 100%.
Slash and burn
"Mach Nine" isn't convinced he'll be able to fly tonight against the Buffalo Sabres.
Senators winger Martin Havlat skated for 15 minutes yesterday, but his right elbow remains sore from a slash he sustained during Monday's 6-2 loss against Tampa Bay.
"I'm not sure. We're going to have to see what happens (today)," Havlat said. "There's still a lot of pain in that area and the problem is that's where I hold my stick, so I haven't been able to shoot the way I like to shoot.
"I was able to play against Florida, and I thought it was going to be fine, but after the first period I wasn't able to contribute. It's going to have to get better because I have to be able to shoot the puck. Hopefully, it's going to be fine, but we'll see."
Like the rest of the Senators, Havlat was going to spend most of yesterday trying to get some rest. When the club wraps up its schedule before the all-star break with a game Thursday in Los Angeles, Ottawa will have played 31 games in 58 days.

Derek Morris update:
Derek Morris suffered a fractured orbital bone beneath his right eye in his fight with Columbus' David Ling on Thursday and will undergo surgery Tuesday, but the Colorado Avalanche is hopeful the 24-year-old defenseman could be back in the lineup with a face shield two weeks later. Colorado trainer Pat Karns on Saturday said that was the timetable for Morris, "if all goes well" with the surgery and the recuperation. Karns noted that Morris' orbital bone, while fractured, wasn't displaced and shoved back into the sinus cavity, so the break isn't considered severe.

Savard injured against Rangers
Marc Savard picked up an assist on the Thrashers' first goal in Saturday's 4-1 victory over the New York Rangers, but he was injured on the same play. The center intercepted an Eric Lindros pass in the opening seconds of the second period and fed the puck to Slava Kozlov, who hit Dany Heatley cutting to the net. But when Heatley scored the first of his three goals, Savard was lying on the ice in pain outside the blue line, the victim of a knee to the back of the right leg by Rangers defenseman Vladimir Malakhov. Savard suffered a hamstring injury and is questionable for Tuesday's rematch with the Rangers in Atlanta. The assist was the ninth point in eight games for Savard.
On a tear since serving his suspension, Kozlov had a three-assist game for the second time in less than a week and has eight points in the past three games. The veteran winger had three assists Tuesday in the 8-4 victory over St. Louis, an assist and a goal Thursday against Ottawa and then three assists Saturday. Since drawing a three-game suspension for grabbing a referee Jan. 2 in Ottawa, Kozlov has five goals and 10 assists for 15 points in nine games. Kozlov has a team-best 28 assists and is third with 39 points.

Brylin, who can play all three forward positions, was checked along the boards by Washington's Steve Konowalchuk and collided with teammate Colin White. The 29-year-old Russian fell to the ice, clutching his wrist. According to team officials, Brylin may have fractured the wrist. He will be re-examined Thursday after the team returns to New Jersey.

Jason Allison will remain out of action until at least this weekend.
Allison did not practice yesterday instead resting his injured hip flexor and reconstructed knee. He may be ready to go by Friday, but Allison himself has admitted he will not be up to full speed again until September. Keep Allison reserved for the time being, and temper your expectations for him for the rest of the season. If the Kings fall out of the playoff race, it would not surprise us to see Allison shut down for the remainder of the season.
