Subject: Yahoo League: TSN-Style... Only Better!

  Posted by: KrazyKoalaBears - Donor [517553018] Tue, Sep 16, 2003, 00:24

That's right, it's a Yahoo points-based Hockey League done up TSN-Style. The only thing is, this is better because only 1 team can have each player and there's no salary crap (er, cap) to worry about. Oh yeah, there's that FREE part as well. ;)

I'm looking for 12 teams that are going to be active all season, so if you're interested, post your email here. If you don't plan on being active all season, then please don't sign up.

Here's the logistics...
Draft: SLOW DRAFT (I have something that will work for this)
Max Moves: 40
Max Trades: No max
Scoring type: Points-based
Waiver time: 2 days
Max Games: 82
Roster Changes: Daily

Starting Pos: C, C, C, W, W, W, W, D, D, D, G, G, IR, IR (just like TSN + 2 IR spots)
Max Players on Team: 16 (translation: 4 bench spots)

Points System (just like TSN)
Goals: 25
Assists: 25
P/M: 10
PIM: 3
PPG: 10
PPA: 5 (Not normally in TSN)
SHG: 20
GWG: 20
GTG: 10
SOG: 2

Wins: 50
Ties: 25
GA: -15
Sv: 2
SHO: 50

I'd like to play in your league as well. I'll be active all season. Always have been and always will be and that's a promise. What I am a little concerned about is my ability to be around often enough for slow draft, especially at weekends. But as you have something that'll work for this :-) it shouldn't be a problem.

All, I've set up a little program that will let us do our slow draft. I'm going to be around from 8am to about 10-11pm ET every day. As admin of the draft, the program will allow me to make picks for anyone. So, in the event you will be away, during that time period on any day, just send me a queue.

The time limit for each pick will be 12 hours. This seemed to work fine for a football draft we had this year, so we'll see how it works for this.

So far, I have 8 emails and 1 tenative. Little M, if you want to join, leave me your email like the others did.

That leaves us with 2 or 3 spots remaining, depending on Little M.

Does anybody object to starting the draft on Friday? I'm not sure what the Isabel is going to do around these parts, so I can't guarantee Friday, but I'd like to start then if it's okay with everybody.

Okay, we're down to either one more manager or Little M. First dibs goes to Little M, but if I don't hear back by tomorrow night, then it'll be first come, first serve.

Everybody else, you should have received an email. If not, let me know.

Also, make sure you have a Kafenatid.net Games account. If you do not, go ahead and sign up for one because you'll need it to draft.

However, after being guinea pigs for my little draft tool, everyone might want to run, kicking and screaming, from my site. ;)

Seriously though, I'm hoping that this league draft tool might have some value down the road, so we'll see.

DRAFT ORDER (based on ascending ID number associated with email post)
1. R9
2. Rick007
3. Urmas
4. Dan
5. Challenger
6. Twarpy
7. Bags
8. Garibaldi
9. philflyboy
10. KKB (based on my original post)
11. quik_ag
12. Dr. Doom

If you don't like the order, get a new ID next time. ;)

DRAFT TIME
The draft is still SCHEDULED to start on Friday. However, I'm also sitting right in the path of the hurricane and the way this town is wired I may not have power on Friday. So, if nobody hears from me on Friday (you can check to see if the standings have been posted in the Baseball Standings forum), then just check back on Monday.

DRAFT LOG-IN
Make sure you have a Kafenatid.net Games account. It will be required to participate in the draft. I WILL SEND OUT E-MAILS TONIGHT FOR REGISTERING FOR THE DRAFT. YOU WILL NEED TO DO THIS BY FRIDAY MORNING!

THE HASEK DILEMMA
Here's the solution: If you want him, you draft him. What will happen (as I explained in the Yahoo message area) is that the person who drafts him will have full rights UNLESS THE FILL THAT SPOT ON THEIR ROSTER. The person who drafts him will have an empty bench spot when I input the draft results. If they fill that spot at any point in time, they lose all rights to Hasek and he becomes a waiver wire pickup. If they leave that spot empty until Hasek is available, they have full rights to him.

Draft email sent. Please let me know if you do not receive it. Also, please be sure to update the email for your Kafenatid.net Games account to one that you check. You will receive an email notification each time it is your turn to pick. Hopefully this will help the process along since you won't have to check all the time to see if it's your turn. You can edit your email by clicking the "Edit Account" link in the "Games" section of the menu when you're logged in.

I'm not sure. As much as I remember I did everything as I was supposedly supposed to do - wrote first and last names, selected team and position, then clicked something and on the next page said yes. I also think I chose the right position (W), but I'm not really sure. I may try to repeat it in 2nd round if you want ;-)

Actually I'm a computer programmer myself, so the situation is of some interest to me as well. How do you determine the Pos field shown in the page? Do you show what I claim the player to be or do you search it from a file (or database) using players name? If it's the latter, then it may have happened because I wrote "markus naslund" instead of "Markus Naslund"?

Urmas, I'm just doing a case-insensitive pattern match based on first name, last name, and team. I don't take into account position (which I only get from the user submission) because it would add too much more pattern matching to accomplish than what I want. Anyhow, the interesting part is that the position is a drop-down, which means that you're guaranteed to have one selected. Somehow, it got lost in the form submit and that's what I'm interested in. If you can make it happen again, great! If not, no big. I'll just work on adding a check for that just in case.

Challenger, after this beta test, this will become a regular menu item at Kafenatid.net, so you won't have the issues of access that you do right now. Until then, the difficult access is one of the downsides to keeping things secret. ;)

After mulling over the email on all picks idea....I think I would like to be notified on all picks. My "Refresh" icon is pretty much wore out for the football drafts. :)

I think an option as R9 suggested would be a good idea.

KKB, have you given thought to having the option of "auto reload" for the draft page? With a 12 hour time limit, about 10 -15 minute reload period.

Challenger, I can only show so many picks at one time. For both the first pick and last pick of the draft, you'll obviously have to click into their name to see who the earlier pick of the swing around was.

I think I've fixed the error that Doom ran into. I'll keep an eye on things to make sure.

Also, if everyone can make sure there is a position showing up when they make their pick, that would be great. When it asks you to confirm your pick, it should look like First Last (Team - Position). If it doesn't look this way, click the "Don't Draft Him" link and try to replicate the way you picked the player. If it you CAN replicate it, please DO NOT make your pick and please let me know the exact steps you took to replicate the error. This one isn't making any sense, so I'm trying to see what's going on. Thanks!

KKB, My excel Sheet is having trouble with your numbering system. Could that be a problem for you in any way?

Ex - You picked @ 1.10 which is the same as R9 @ 1.1 in normal math. Could you insert a zero in the .10 spot? 1.01

I have no trouble with how you display this draft. Just missed seeing Doc's 1st rd choice which came across my mind as what was it? I'll get use to it....someday. :)

He wants the first picks in a round to have a 0 after the decimal point for example...1.01, 2.01, 3.01...It isn't necessary for subsequent picks such as 1.02 as it doesnt create a problem for a pick such as 1.2 and 1.20. I'm not sure if that helps as I'm tired as well...

Thanks Dan! Actually, you need the 0 up until 1.10 IE - 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, ........ 1.10, 1.11 so forth, because when you sort in Excel it would sort out of order to 1.01, 1.10, 1.2, 1.3 etc, etc, if not.

Hopes this makes sense as it's getting late. Where have I heard that one?? :)

Perhaps you could decrease the number pk (in rd.pk) when the picks are made in an even round?
That way I always get pick x.8, where x is the round...and it makes it easier to follow what the others have chosen.

I also worked out a nice little tool for the draft admin (that would be me) that shows 1.) how many picks have been made, 2.) the average time per pick, 3.) the number of picks left, and 4.) the projected finish time of the draft based on #2 and #3 and current time.

Our draft has been held up by technical glitches, but it's pretty funny that we're projected to finish just after opening day...

Picks made: 26
Time Per Pick: 02:09:46
Picks Left: 166
Projected Finish: 10/09/03 11:16:46 am

We have plenty of time, so I'm sure we'll make it.

I believe it is time for the much not-anticipated sequel of the
[geek_speak]
I think the reason why the position didn't show up for my Markus Naslund pick is that I'm using Mozilla, not IE. When I tried to make my othet two picks with Mozilla or Netscape I was that close to repeating the feal. With IE it worked fine. Team name shows up fine in all three of them.

Now web programming isn't really my forte, but could all this have something to do with the fact that you describe position and team selections in a little different way. The team selections are described like that:

[option value="30"]ANA[/option]
[option value="11"]ATL[/option]
...

But position selections look in page source like this:

[option valueC]C[/option]
[option valueW]W[/option]
[option valueD]D[/option]
[option valueG]G[/option]

As it seems IE has no problems with that but both Netscape and Mozilla get rather confused.

Please remember that if you're going to be away or not be able to make picks for extended periods of time, particularly at night, to leave a queue with me at admin@kafenatid.net. Our projected finish has gone from just after the start of the season to 10/12. We need to get faster, instead of slower, if we're going to make it in time.

If things don't start picking up, I'm going to drop the pick time to 4 hours starting with round 5.

Picks are taking longer the further we go. In 8 picks since post 114, we've added almost 40 minutes to our average pick time and have pushed the projected finish date to 10/13 now. That obviously doesn't work.

I don't mind delays between the hours of 12 am and 8 am, but for the rest of the time, I'm awake and can handle any queue you may have. So, if you know you're going to be away, please leave me a queue so we can keep this thing moving.

Anyhow, I just mentioned that the arrow thing doesn't work when the current pick is on someone who missed a pick. It's because their missed pick takes precedence over their current pick, so essentially, the arrow is going both ways at that point in time.

Also, I just wanted to say great job on the drafting over the last couple of days. We're actually getting back on target for finishing before the season starts. Keep it up!

quik_ag, got it. When I fixed the apostrophe problem, I had forgotten to download the latest version of the draft home page. I fixed the position error at work, so I didn't have a copy of that at home. Oops! :)

Okay, so now we're not back on target for finishing. Don't forget to leave queue's if you're going to be away. With the way the draft has been running at times, if you're going to be away for more than 3-4 hours, please leave a queue.

IMPORTANT!

In an effort to get this draft finished, the draft time will be dropped to 1 hour tomorrow at 8 am. If you will not be available to pick within that time frame, please send a queue to me at admin@kafenatid.net.

Rosters will be uploaded to Yahoo when the draft clock has reached 0:00. If you have an incomplete roster, it will be first come, first serve from the FA pool to fill your roster.

I'm apologize that it has had to come to this, but this draft needs to finish 2+ more rounds by tomorrow night so I can input the rosters properly.

PLAYER RIGHTS
The following players have been drafted and are not yet available in the Yahoo fantasy hockey database. The manager who drafted them will have full rights to the draft player until that roster spot is filled. If that roster spot becomes filled, the manager will lose all rights to the player. In the event of multiple player rights for a single manager, if a spot becomes filled, they will lose rights to the lowest drafted (highest number round) player whose rights they have.

Garibaldi: Philippe Sauve (G, COL)

philflyboy: Jani Pitkanen (D, PHI)

A question. Or a note to Dan and Twarpy really, because I think I know the answer. Two players (Mike York and Jason Blake) have been drafted as centers but they're listed as wingers by Yahoo. Does that mean Dan and Twarpy will have an extra winger and one less center to play with?

P.S. Considering Mike York, and probably Jason Blake too, really are centers it may well happen they'll gain center eligibility at one point during the season and it will turn out to be a non-issue.

I've got the same issue with Chris Drury. Ah well, we'll just have to wait and see what yahoo does about their positions.

Urmas, I have no control over positions, so they will be added at the position they are listed in the Yahoo fantasy hockey database (which isn't always the same as the players database). Though as you pointed out, the players will likely gain eligibility at the other position at some point during the season.

I thought that's the answer. According to the Yahoo fantasy hockey database Mike York is LW and Jason Blake is RW. The only players available both as winger and center I've seen so far are Peter Forsberg and Trevor Letowski.

KKB, You might check to see if your timely emails are still going out. Haven't rec'd mine yet when normally I have rec'd them within 5 minutes of previous pick. (I know, you can only send them and have to rely on the Postal Service to deliver them) ;>)

Challenger, they only get sent when the person before you picks. It's something I'm going to be looking into for the final version.

That wasn't near as cornfusing as Sunday when I rec'd my notification 4 1/2 hours after making my selection which was made 5 minutes after Dan. Talk about getting to the draft quick and then trying to figure out why it wasn't my turn but still Twarpy's whose turn was directing after me. Me head was spinning! Who am I going to select? Just who? What position? What, it's not my turn? Drat! :)

Just an FYI that I will post all Players Rights as a Commish Note after I upload the draft tonight. Be sure to give a quick check there before picking up new players.

I had with Brian Pothier the problem Challenger described in post 149 with Mike Dunham. The difference is, that Dunham is in Yahoo player database (now) but Pothier really isn't. I guess that's another entry to Players Rights. Not that I think that anyone else wants him, mind you...

Urmas, Pothier is in the database, but not associated with the OTT team. That's why he didn't show up.
