Who's "in" for a proposed Yahoo! baseball group: Curby, Moose, quik, Toral, Thinkbig

Declined: Little M

Teams/managers still to be heard from: Challenger, Dan, Dr. Doom, philflyboy, Rogue9, StL Blues, Taxman, Twarpy

The game is supposed to be launched mid-February, so expect that to be sometime during the week of the 16th.

• Format (head-to-head, roto, or points) and settings (scoring categories, number of players per team) are open to discussion.
• Draft order to be based on pre-playoff standings in About Time Hockey Starts III, i.e., at the conclusion of Week 22. (Consequently, the baseball draft will not begin prior to March 8.) If we opt for H2H and need to recruit outside the group to get to an even number of teams, newcomer(s) go to the bottom of the draft order.
• Offline selection, either here or via e-mail, will be restricted to the Yahoo! player pool at the time of draft.
• Traditional reptile draft, given that my suggestion on the league message board to try a different approach was about as popular as tofu at a Texas barbecue.

Speak up. :-)

moose---

don't really want head to head, but if it's majority i will comply.....I'll leave scoring cat's and # of players to other people.

I think we should post here like we did with hockey....it seemed to work okay, but maybe we need to put a cap on how long between picks....i think 12 hours, and then commish picks highest ranked player (find a queue buddy), at any position.

and moosey......I'm still playing hockey....even tho' it doesn't look like it...lol

have a good sunday people!

StLCards,

Last year's draft was indeed autopick ... we got a late start and the MLB season began March 25, about a week earlier than normal (this year's opener is scheduled for April 4). I'm comfortable with whatever format suits the majority, as long as it's not "live." If we make offline selections and respect a time limit, three weeks should be sufficient.

I believe these were the 2003 settings:

Maximum Number of Teams: default is 12; an even number is required for H2H scoring
Maximum Players on a Team: 23 (default is 21)
Player Universe: All baseball (last year, we were split half all-AL and half all-NL)
Maximum Moves: 35
Maximum Trades: No maximum (same as default)
Scoring Type: Head-to-Head League
Waiver Time: 2 days (same as default)
Last Trade Date: August 24 (default was August 10)
Trade Reject Time: 2 days (same as default)
Minimum Innings: 15 (default is 7)
Roster Changes: Daily
Starting Positions: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, Util, Util, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P, DL, DL
(Util batters can be any non-pitcher, including "designated hitters"; P can be any pitcher)

Statistical Categories—Batters (the first five are default settings):
Runs
Home Runs
Runs Batted In
Stolen Bases
Batting Average
On-base + Slugging Percentage

Statistical Categories—Pitchers (the first five are default settings):
Wins
Saves
Strikeouts
Earned Run Average
(Walks + Hits)/ Innings Pitched
Holds

I think autopick should work fine again.

Isn't there an early Japan series in late March? If we're doing HTH, we prob don't want to start till eall the teams are playing anyway.

Toral: You are correct ... there is a two-day series in Japan, March 30–31. I agree that if we are playing H2H, it would be better to wait until the first full week of the season.

Game's up. I've registered About Time Hardball Starts II and rolled over most of last year's information while we "discuss" final settings.

Draft type: Offline
Maximum number of teams: 14
Type of scoring: Head-to-Head
Player universe: All baseball
Maximum player acquisitions for the entire season: 35 (can be none, no limit, or up to 40)
Maximum trades for the entire season: No maximum
Time managers have to protest pending trades: 2 days
Last date to trade players: August 29, 2004 (other choices are August 1, 8, 15, 22)
Time players are on waivers: 2 days
Can't Cut list provider: None (option: Yahoo! Sports) ... for a "fun" league, I don't think we need this
Trades reviewed by: League Votes (option: Commissioner)
After draft, make all unowned players: Follow Waiver Rules (option: Free Agents)
Minimum innings pitched per team per week: 15 (can be as few as none, as many as 50)
Allow roster changes: Daily–Tomorrow (option: Weekly on Monday)
Start League scoring on: Week 1–March 30 (Week 2 does not begin until April 12)

Explanation of the "Can't Cut" list: A number of the best players in the game will be on this list throughout the season. When a player is on the list, he cannot be waived from a team under any circumstances. The "Can't Cut" list, which will be updated when necessary, will prevent managers at the bottom of the standings from changing the league dynamics by waiving all of their outstanding players.

Roster positions (23 players per team, plus two DL slots):
C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF (3), Util (2)
SP (2), RP (2), P (3)
Bench (6), DL (2)

Statistical categories: same as last year's (see post #8 above). A complete of stat options can be found here.

The league number and password will be posted on the Yahoo! hockey group's message board.

AL/NL: yuk. Though Ms Lemoose likes to experiment, and I'll go along with whatever.(Also, we may need to recruit some folks, who'd get stuck with AL.)

On settings, I would suggest going for the full 40 transactions. I'd be happy to see debate, but the player who raised the issue last year isn't with us now. Practically, some players will forget there is a limit early and start blowing transactions, which skews competitiveness late.
On "trades reviewed by": I'd go with Commish option. We've never had a problem here, but I'd rather see the Commish establish a rule and decide that have it by majority vote.

What is more important is the draft date> I am out of country 3/3 through 3/7 and out of town 3/8 through 3/13 (however I can do phone contact during the later time). Somebody let me know please.

Taxman: With the draft order being determined by the hockey group's regular-season standings at the end of week 22, the earliest we can begin selecting players is March 8 (and that is assuming Yahoo! hockey will be up-to-date). No AL/NL split; scoring is head-to-head.

Haven't adjusted any of the scoring options (see post 11 above) yet ... there have been only a couple of suggestions posted and not much support for the proposed changes. I think that going for the full 40 transaction limit is a good idea, though, as this time we'll have a larger player pool from which to draw. Any objections from the group?

On league settings, I'll repeat myself: I strongly recommend that "league votes" be changed to "commissioner". I don't care what rules the league/ Commish follows on disallowing trades: majority votes, two-thirds, the Commish's opinion, or flipping a coin. We've never had a problem, we folks, with dubious trades and I don't expect one, but the "league votes' option allows any 4 people to vote anonymously to veto a trade, and leaving it on is just asking for trouble.

Regrettably, because this has been a great bunch to play with, I won't be able to join another draft league. I was drafted ouit last year by the time ATHS came up, and it showed.

If you need or decide to go low-maintenance and autodraft, I would be in.

Autodraft is also fun when you see the results and say "!@@##$%^&&&*& !" How did I end up with 8 OFs and no 2Bmen? It tends to increase of necessity the league's early trading activity, and social interaction!

Draft hours will be 10:00 a.m. ET to midnight ET daily; let's plan on starting officially on Thursday, March 10. There will be an eight-hour limit between picks for the first round and a six-hour limit between picks thereafter; if we fall too far behind pace, that limit will be reduced as necessary. Any manager placed on the clock after 10:00 p.m. ET will have until 10:00 a.m. ET the following day to make his/her pick. If you miss your turn and have not left a queue with another manager, we'll move along to the next team in the draft order. You'll be able to add your make-up pick(s) later—make sure you identify them by round and draft position—without having to wait for your next regular turn.

[For the curious: The draft order was determined by a "blind" double-random drawing, i.e., a team name was chosen at random and matched with a draft position number drawn at random.]

Thanks for the call and update phone buddy. Everything came thru except for the "call back" number. So I called DeepSnapper and asked Roy to enter the pick for me.

Please continue phone buddy work on Sunday if it works for you.
