Who's going to be #1, my first hockey draft so what are the most important positions goalie or forwards. I can't see rationalizing high picks on d-men.

I highly recommend you select a stay at home defensemen to ensure your goalie maintains good stats.

God, I hate picking first. I know the next 5 on my cheatsheet are going to be the next 5 picked. I don't like rolling the dice on Heatley, but he's got the skills and the youth to make a fresh start and really tear it up for some time.

Luongo before Brodeur surprised me given Brodeur's consistency across all Goalie categories. Oh well, I didn't expect to have a shot at either one anyhow for my second pick.

I think a combination of Florida signing Nieuwendyk and Roberts to help their younger players, Luongo being pissed off due to arbitration and maybe putting up a career year and New Jersey losing Niedermeyer makes it a close call for me.

We definitly need a Rationale thread...

This is going to be a really really interesting draft... What other draft can boast himself of having begin while not all F/A are signed, all these dudes that changed team... and of course a full year passed by with no stats at all. We have to think about the rules, new equipment...

The rare cheat sheets avalaible are piece of crap IMHO. And i will use them only as a name reminder... and throw the predicted stats in the thrash can... Also, the scoring format... is kinda unusual IMO... So it should be a whole lot of fun to watch.

Good luck all!

Yeah, the cheat sheets are very, very rough. There are a few guys, past about #70 or so, that I'd completely forgotten about!

I suspect the waiver wire will be quite active once we finish drafting.

My understanding is that max would be the same as other positions - 82 per slot - so 164 games max for goalies. I don't know if this is 100% explicit, though, so we should probably get that clarified.

Philflyboy,

We a agreed that goalies would have a 100 game minimum. With the assumed 164 game max, it means that you must have between 100 and 164 goalie games from the two goalie positions.

100 game min for goalies might be a little tough for some teams IMO ....especially with 14 of us in this league

not all of us will be fortunate do dft two goalies who play 60+ a year.....or one that plays 55 and another who plays 40 ish

82 might be a good min and 130 a max

I don't think that we can change the rules after the draft has started. The Beezer did an analysis in the other thread and concluded that 100 games shouldn't be a problem. Remember there are 30 teams in the NHL and almost all of them will have a goalie than plays at least 50 games. Also, you can have more than two goalies on your team and rotate them through the goalie slots and the bench slots.

We'll be drafting 28 goalies, minimum, there shouldn't be a problm hitting 100 games assuming everyone selects 2 probable starters.

We did agree to the 100/164 games played for the goalies,

However, with setting a minimum for a Goalie's games played, Yahoo doesn't allow for minimums to be set, so I guess it will be on the honour system.

I believe I read in the RIBC (Baseball), that if anyone goes under the minimum innings(goalie's games played) that they will be considered LAST in every category concerning the pitcher (goalie).

Is this an acceptable punishment, in hockey as well?

A few tips on rationales from the Rotoguru Invitational leagues:

Here are the ground rules:
1. Only managers in this league should post there. If you want to provide feedback (either from other league managers, or from those not in the league), put it in the discussion thread. (Non-conforming discussion in that thread will be deleted.)

2. Try to keep the pick rationales in the same order as the draft. We'll attempt to keep this thread 2 rounds behind the actual draft. With the lag, most comments should not have an impact on the draft in progress. However, if there are aspects of your pick that you feel need to be kept under wraps, feel free to protect that information. In particular, please avoid mentioning the names of any players who are still undrafted at that time of the post.

Please post your (2 round lagged) comments at the time you make each pick. For example, you should post your comments for your round 1 pick when you make your round 3 selection. If you are not ready to post at that time, then create a "placeholder" so that the next person is able to go ahead in sequence. When your post is ready, simply post it in the draft discussion thread and a moderator can copy it over.

If your rationale is due and intervening placeholders have not been inserted, please insert them before posting your rationale.

3. Once the draft is over, each manager is also encouraged to provide a general draft recap, at which time you can discuss your overall strategy, mention any undisclosed factors, comment on what worked out well and what didn't, etc.

The general format should be:
1.01 Ken Dryden - G, Mon
Several sentences of rationale.

Hope this helps. And BTW, you bold by typing to start bolding and to end bolding, except you use the < and > keys instead of [ and ].

Can I request that we not have a clock? Seriously, even though we've just gone through Labor Day weekend, we're still on pace to finish by 10/06. Obviously, that's 1 day into the season, but again we're just finishing the Labor Day weekend.

I say let it go a week or so and see where we stand. If we're still behind time after that, THEN start a clock. It seems like everybody's in a rush to finish this, but all that's going to happen is that we'll finish and then sit around for two weeks adjusting our rosters, waiting for the season to start. I rather like the laid back pace of this draft to this point, particularly with a number of player's status still up in the air.

I'd rather be finishing up the draft with a week to go then staring at my roster in Yahoo.

I don't really mind leaving the clock off, just so long as no one takes advantage of it and just sits on thier pick for the sake of sitting on it. I'd like to have some form to pace to the proceedings, so someone can at least expect to be able to make thier next pick within a reasonable amount of time.

That's just my opinion.

Personally, I still think that we should have a clock. I don't think that giving someone six hours to make a pick is a rush.

We still have 249 players to pick. The season starts in in 29 days and we will need to finish the draft a little early to allow the picks to be entered into Yahoo. That means that we have to average about 10 picks per day. I would prefer to keep this at a steady rate rather than averaging six picks per day and then having a one hour time limit for the last few rounds to get the draft completed.

My main concern is that the last slow draft that I was in had someone go on a business trip and we went four days without a pick. As a result, the last few rounds of the draft were extremely rushed and the draft was not finalized until after the season started. I hope that we would not go four days without a pick in this draft, but without a specfied time limit, where do you draw the line, after ten hours, after a day? It starts to get subjective and can lead to disagreements. I think that it is best to state in advance what an acceptable delay is. That way everyone is clear on the rules. If six hours is rushing it, then set the time limit for 12 hours or 120 hours or what ever you think is appropriate.

A clock is ridiculous at this point. Plain and simple. RIFC completed 21 rounds, 14 managers from 08/17 to 09/01. There's just no sense in a clock at this point in time; not when we're 3 rounds ahead of that with a month to go.

However, that said, if we do have a clock, I'd like to recommend 45 hours, with a daily pause from 11 pm to 8 am, and a weekend pause from 11 pm Friday to 8 am Monday. That essentially gives 3 full days for a pick and weekends off. There is honestly no need for anything more than that at this point in time.

I have no desire to stare at my roster for 2 weeks and watch 100 transactions go through Yahoo as people make adjustments based on actual action (preseason) and not guessing from performances that were put on the books over a year ago.

45 hours clock?

lol, i agree with kkb...

There is no need for a clock just yet, skipping some1 pick this early would really suck.

But it would be awesome if people could inform the rest of us if they think they cant pick anytime soon. That is call consideration...

KKB,

I can understand you saying that you don't want a clock at this time. However, to say that anyone who disagrees with you is ridiculous, is ridiculous. Comparing our draft to a different draft with different managers is ridiculous.

I was about to write a long diatribe, but I think that I have already made my position clear and will leave it up to others to decide.

I agree that we don't need a clock yet, but I don't feel the RIFC is a completely fair comparison as that league had exchanged cell numbers between a lot of the members. Also, they were using a clock. :)

I'd say as long as we're far enough ahead to where we can finish a week early at 1 round per weekday and a half round per weekend, we should do without the clock.

Little M, I didn't say you were ridiculous. I said the idea of a clock is ridiculous. Completely different things. And comparing our draft to other drafts is not ridiculous, it's a pretty good basis, particularly since they were using the exact same software. Here's another comparision of 2 more drafts with different managers...

RIBC
Rounds: 25
Managers: 16
Start: 03/04
End: 03/26

That's 3 weeks for FAR more picks than we've got. And I know we didn't exchange numbers because I was part of that draft.

RIBC AA #2
Rounds: 25
Managers: 16
Start: 03/01
End: 03/26

3 days more than RIBC, but still less than a month for far more picks than we're slated for.

I could go on and on and on with examples, but I think you get the idea. There's no reason to think this group is any different than the average.

Yep. I think we've just had a slow start, mainly because of the few folks who went out of town right after the second round (and I'll fully refrain from mentioning my huge use of clock in both the first 2 rounds, hee hee, oops)... I think we'll be fine to finish well ahead of the season opener.

I think it will be ok. I just got a queue from Isles, so as long as people recognize if they are going to be away for longer periods of time, the draft should be ok.

I say we set a date of September 16th and see where we are...the season is still almost 3 weeks away, if at that time we need to set a limit we can. However, I also feel that if we are always waiting on one or two players constantly, we should look at that as well.

For now, things are ok after a hard weekend to start. Sound like a decent compromise?

All,
Please pay attention to the STOP sign and read what it has to say. I noticed Lang Robert in the list of picks. I don't know who Lang Robert is, but I (and the system) know who Robert Lang is.

The STOP sign is there for a reason...

I was forced to go to Satan instead, who I haven't been al that excited about in some time but I just realized the guy is only 29--hopefully the fresh start will get him more points. He's certainly not shy about shooting, so that's always a bonus.

Yeah...I almost took him with my 4th round pick, but thought that Center would be an easier position to fill later, so I went with a goalie instead.

Is the 5th too early? I hope not...if he lives up to the hype the way Lebron did in his rookie year, then I will be very pleased!

I was tempted to take him with my 4th round pick, but I still saw some solid forwards who would likely put up what I'm hoping Sidney could do. I knew he wouldn't last back to me though...

Yeah...I'm not even a Pittsburgh fan, and I had no plans to go in and take all these Penguins...

But when I saw how some of these rosters started to load up with goals and points, I knew I needed to take some chances with my offensive players after I missed out on the big goalies.

I was so sure you would pick Crosby i didn't even put him in my Q.

I should have taken him instead of Tanguay... just to see your face :)

Anyway... i really don't know what to expect from this guy, but whatever happens, 5th round is a very good place to make that bet. Good pick!

That Gonchar pick though... compensate for it. IMHO. 1.08? Come on! :)

Gonchar might even produce at a level worthy of such a high pick. The reality though is that you could've had him in round 2 or 3 most likely...

Sweet! Our first trash talking!

Gonchar as the 8th pick, yeah...

My only reasonable rationale is that I hope he can provide a large statistical differential over the next couple of defencemen.

That being said...what was I thinking?!?

It is starting to get harder to pick now and we still have 15 more rounds to go. There will be some really obscure players selected in the final few rounds.

My only reasonable rationale is that I hope he can provide a large statistical differential over the next couple of defencemen.

Doesn't really matter. I was listening to sports radio this morning and they were talking about a guy in an experts draft who took Mike Anderson of Denver with the 7th overall pick. The point was made that even if he performs better than every other RB out there, he still could have been had in the 3rd round or later. Same with Gonchar. Way overpaid and thus a bad pick. Gonchar could lead the league in G, A, +/-, PIM, and PPP and it would still be a bad pick because you could have had him about 2 rounds later... no problem.

true...

but, my second round pick was my alternative for my first round pick, and I got them both. So...the two are interchangable for me. For all I care, I could call Mario my first rounder, and Gonchar my second rounder. I honestly believe that Gonchar is worthy of at least a second round pick, and who is to say he would have fallen to me midway through the 3rd round, with the 32nd pick?

Either way, I am actually pleased with the two of them as my combination 1/2 picks.

If you didn't get Mario with your 2nd rounder (I was reaaaaaaaaaally close to taking him instead of Sakic) things would be different, but I agree that Gonchar would not have made it back to you in round 3.

I don't feel enough confidence to say for sure that any player I think will do well would still be there with a later pick. If I see a guy sticking out like a sore thumb on my board, I'm taking him regardless of whether I think I can get him later. For me it's just as likely that the guy I take instead would have been there for my next pick.

That said, I think 5th round is about right for Crosby. I was hoping he'd go much earlier so I wouldn't be tempted to grab him in the 6th.

Good to see some controversy going on early...

My jaw dropped a bit when i saw Gonch go #8... We all knew he was going to be big, but #8 overall big, surely not? I don't know if anyone else here but you Barilko had him ranked above the top 20, but if you ended with the players you wanted anyways through the first 3 rounds then more power to you. I hope he kills it because that means he'll be taking Ziggy for the ride, which i would very much appreciate...

Steven Walkom sounds like a robot. "I look forward to a new exciting season of hockey. Yay. I can hardly contain myself. It will be.... zzzzzzzzzzz" lol

Still, if the refs even call half of what he talked about its going to be a ton faster. That said, there's no doubt in my mind that some players aren't going to be able to ajust. Like the footage of 'no stopping forwards on a faceoff'. Every clip shows that all 6 forwards on the ice were doing it. Or the 'no hitting a guy dumping the puck unless you immediately hit him' is very subjective, and I can see refs just letting that slide.

Not the best of news:

Contract talks with Ilya Kovalchuk have hit a roadblock, which could cost the Thrashers their best player this season. Jay Grossman, the agent for the star left wing, said his client will pursue a contract with a pro team in his native Russia, which could be completed by early next week. If that happens, the Thrashers have until Oct. 5 to negotiate with Kovalchuk. If no agreement is reached, he likely would be lost for the season.

this has been a very frustrating draft so far!! We have waited 24 hours for people to pick atleast 3 times. Either people need to start picking quicker or leaving a queue or we will have to start a clock of some sort on the 16th.

I agree...

I don't know many times I have checked to see who is up for picking and have seen the same name.

I definately think we are getting close to the point where we need to implement some sort of time limit.

Alright...

Throwing this out there:

Is anyone opposed to a 4 hour pick clock starting Thursday morning at 9:00 AM.

We are currently only in the 8th round after 2 weeks of drafting, and the season is only 3 weeks away. We are still not even halfway done, and as Perm Dude mentioned, the picks are going to get harder, and those of us that post only minutes after another pick will probably take a little longer with our picks.

Personally, I would like at least 1 full week to look over my roster and make waiver wire changes and possibly some trades before the season starts.

Anyone have any other thoughts?

Make it a 5 or 6 hour window so that you can accomodate the West Coast folks.

I agree with a stoppage on the weekends. I have to take care of my 'other' family.

No limit on weekends.

Nightly off times are no biggie to me so long as we on the West Coast don't get cut off too early.

Alright...

Since I hear no objections, and we would prefer to finish this draft before the start of the season:

The clock will start tomorrow at 9:00 AM, and will shut off at 12:00 AM. Each team will have a 6 hour time limit to make their pick.

Should they miss their pick, they can jump in at anytime thereafter. (We'll just call that the Minnesota Viking Rule)

The clock will stop at 12:00 AM Saturday morning, and then go back on at 9:00 AM Monday morning.

The only question I have is, does Kafenatid allow for skipped picks? I would ask KKB, but it seems as though he has be AWOL for a bit...

Yes it does. If someone times out it will immediately jump to the next person, but when the skipped manager logs in he'll be able to pick as though it is still his turn too.

Sorry all. I had to go out of town yesterday on late notice and just got back to computer access. I'm working on my pick now. I'll have a quick Staff Meeting (hour or so) after my cpick, but will make my next pick as soon as it's my turn.

And yes, the draft software allows for skipped picks.

And can I recommend the clock be suspended at 11pm? Some of us have to wake up early to go to work, which means getting to bed at a reasonable time. I know it's a 6-hour clock, but that hour means that people like me might end up with only a 5-hour (or less) clock.

And for the second time...

PAY ATTENTION TO THE STOP SIGN!

Tuomo Rutuu doesn't exist. Tuomo Ruutu does. Subtle difference, but it causes unnecessary time in looking up the player that the person meant to draft. They system gives you the stop sign for a reason.

if you lock things up til 9am - would I still be able to make a pik at 6 am just the same ?

isles72,

My understanding is that the system will not be "locked up". It will just be that the clock is stopped. If it is your pick, you should be able to select even if the clock is stopped.

Exactly. The system is not locked up. The clock is simply paused (which is why it's called a Draft Pause). The clock will resume when the pause time is up.

So, for instance, if someone comes on the clock at 10:05pm and the pause starts at 11pm (hint, hint), then they will have used 55 minutes of their clock when the pause started. At 9am, the clock will be turned back on with 5:05 left on the clock. If the person "on the clock" makes their pick during the draft pause, which they're allowed to do, then the next person on the clock will get a full clock when the pause is over.

It's because he's not listed with a team in Yahoo. In the player search, he's listed with DET, but if you go to the Detroit page and click on their roster, there's no Datsyuk. My program actually pulls from the team roster page.

And don't ask me how Yahoo has him assigned to DET, but not on DET's roster. Seems they should be tied together.

Good work today, guys. We're really moving.

I'm kicking myself a bit for picking up Briere instead of Zednick. Granted that I already had two RWs but Zednick is just a kick ass player. They guy takes like 250 shots a season.

mMoses: A toss of the dice with Datsyuk, eh? If he signs with Detroit it'll be a very nice pickup. I was a little scared off him because I heard he might play in Moscow next year (again) after getting millions in a tax-free contract.

I think everyone was looking at Datsyuk, but kept holding off because of the contract. Otherwise, he would have been gone a few rounds ago. I was planning on grabbing him probably around my next time through if he was still available. At that point, the risk would have been worth it. Not sure about quite this early, but if he comes back, it'll surely be worth it.

Isles...

I think as long as you are positive you have the correct spelling, and know that the player isn't taken, then go ahead and pick him.

But it doesn't hurt to click on those yahoo links underneath the stop sign to make absolutely sure.

I am heading out at 4:30...anyone around that I can leave a 2 man queue with in case Dynastie hasn't picked by then?

isles72, I never said you couldn't continue through the STOP sign. I said "Pay attention to the stop sign."

In other words, if you get the STOP sign, read the text below before just clicking ahead. If, after reading the text, you KNOW you have the right player, then click to pick them. Otherwise, make the necessary adjustment. And, with players who should be listed by Yahoo, be sure the spelling is the same as what Yahoo has. It keeps us all on the same page and helps the system work as best as it can (i.e. - the system wouldn't have recognized that Ruutu had been picked since his name was Rutuu).

Wolfer won't like this news:

Elias will start the season on injured reserve and will miss at least New Jersey's first ten regular-season games.

''I can't put a date on (a return),'' Elias told the Star-Ledger. ''If I do too much, I'll get a pain in the liver area. It expands and pushes on your pancreas.''.

Usually we get the "one game at a time..." line but that's great just a great quote.

Yeah, Datsyuk is definitely a risk. I reasoned out for myself that the talent pool is getting low enough to take a risk in round 9. Rotowire explained yesterday that the 'contracts' that Datsyuk 'signed' weren't even registered with the league, and that Datsyuk is taking one more week to decide if he's coming back to Detroit. That perpetual one week that has lasted a month? I can hope for the best. With the speed waivers/free-agents should move during the first few weeks, I figured the risk should be taken.

peace,

WOW! Emery before (censoring myself)! Granted, Hasek isn't exactly Mr. Healthy, but I have to believe that Emery would have still been on the board 2, 3, or even 5 rounds later.

I'll uncensor the name once he's picked.
