From the other thread...
Yeah...Goalies are getting kinda sketchy now. I am glad I got mine.

For the most part, but I'm still surprised that someone with 3 goalies picked up Emery that soon. Further, I'm surprised he went before (censored).

Just picking now. Sorry for the delay--both my fax and printer toner went out at the same time, and I appear not to have extra of both. Ah, the joys of home office supply problems...

Toivonen off the table. Was looking at him some time ago. Was he the guy you were referring to KKB?

I will admit...

I had to google that last name to find out who the heck he is.

Then I had to add goalie to my google search to find any info...

The B's are pretty high on Toivonen, but I still bet they sign Raycroft and let Toivo either backup or start at Providence again. Their window of opportunity might only be this year before some of their FA's take off, so no sense in trying to compete with a rookie goalie when you can have one of the better 'tenders in the league. Still a nice risk to take at this stage though, Raycroft and his agent might continue being dumb.

And yes, Kolzig was the "censored" goalie I was talking about. A #1, for sure. Not the best team in the league, but not the worst, either. He'll certainly see plenty of time between the pipes as he's started no fewer than 63 games since becoming the #1 in WAS. And his career .909 Sv% and 2.56 GAA are like money in the bank.

Yeah, I had thought Raycroft was going to sign, but the longer he does the better it looks for the rookie Toivonen.

Certainly in a keeper league Toivonen, who has looked awfully sharp in minor league play, would have been taken a round or two earlier, so this is a shot in the dark. If he plays he's a nice insurance.

At this point, yes. But if I have to pick a scrub with my last pick and say, "don't add him to my team," then it's fine.

Still, it's a long draft and there may be more trades to come which could even things out.

Yeah--I'll have to pick up a FA at the very end of the draft. I'll wait until everyone has picked, then send a name to barilko6 so he can put in into the Yahoo draft results page.

I may be picking up Messier for all I know. Research is getting tougher and tougher!

Yeah...that might work out best, if KKB throws his last round pick over to PD in the trade. Would that be an acceptable compromise KKB and PD?

21KrazyKoalaBears

      ID: 517553018
      Fri, Sep 16, 2005, 12:53
Not for me. As I said, there may be more trades down the road. I think it's perfectly acceptable for me to have to dump my last round pick (or some other pick if he goes down with a season-ending injury before the start of the season) and PD to have to add someone post-draft.

There's really no need to keep the players/picks even until we set lineups, particularly when we're only halfway through the draft and there are potential trades available.

BTW, the season-ending injury potential is the exact reason I didn't just give over my last round pick. I gave up a #1 starting goalie and got some measure of insurance for my team in return. If anybody else is willing to do that, then I see no reason why they can't have the same insurance, too.

Alright, that is fair, since we never stated that all trades had to be for equal picks/players.

That being said, then I think PD's extra pick has to come after all the players are entered, and then after the 3 day waiver period. If he is trading away existing picks and then needs to pick up a free agent, then that free agent has to be equally available to anyone else who wants a free agent, should someone want to drop a player they already picked...thus going by our waiver priority.

I agree, #24 is fair.

PD, technically, I can use my last pick in the draft software, but I would need to designate a player not to be added to my roster after the draft is complete and before the players are entered into Yahoo. Whether that's the player I select in the last round or some other player will remain to be seen.

I wasn't surprised about Kolzig. No doubt he's a good goalie, but the team in front of him has to help him out. It'll be another long cold wintery season for Caps fans.

That being said, 4 straight picks for KKB...Nice deal.

I can't believe Weight went to the beezer at 11.05. 1st line center lasts until the 11th round. Nice pick.

Olie is great insurance on the bench and was the last of the starter-worthy goalies on my board.

And BTW I'll throw in that #24's proposal is fine by me too.

nice news for Raycroft... but between me and you, not really surprising...

as for Emery, i have to explain myself... and it comes with some apologies too.

I woke up at 5am every morning this week and would come home at 11pm, did go online for about 10 minutes before going to sleep (much needed!). In that 10 minutes i had to check my mails, set-up my fantasy teams (currently looking very good in RIBC-AAA, lead by 14 points! and the first week of RIFC-AAA) and make my picks in here.

Obviously, the cheat sheet i took time to devlop is of no-use because its not updated with the picks made this week and frankly, i had no time to update it. So i picked based on the guys i wanted instead of the best value avalaible. Picks 6 to 10 might have been taken early.

So again i would like to apologies for me slowing the draft, it is definitly not in my habits to do so.

Secondly i will humbly admit that Emery is a very very long shot. He is 100% very high risk/high reward pick. The fact is that he will probably start about 20 games... I will try to start him then. Since he plays in Ottawa (i'm in Montreal) i can read in paper if he is going to be starting instead of rolling the dice. Also, considering what was left on the board (a whole lot of good players!) and considering the importance IMHO of goalies vs skaters in this scoring system i don't think it is such a bad pick. Let's say it could turn out all right if Hasek gets injured :)

I would take Emery over Kolzig every day, i was way more surprised to see Weight, Zubov, Kubina and Arnott still available.

sorry again...

Positions don't really matter too much. More than anything, they only help to see how a team is being filled. As isles72 pointed out, if he ends up with too many C's or RW's, I'm sure he'll figure it out.

That said, people should check out a player's position in the fantasy game because I've seen more than a few publications/web sites that have positions all messed up. You wouldn't want to end up with 12 C's, when you thought you drafted 4 C's and 4 RW's and 4 LW's. ;)

Seems like the year off has everybody scrambling to catch up.

Looks like we both have a vested interest in Hasek's health. ;-)

I have a question regarding trades. Is it a common practice in these types of pools to negotiate trades "behind closed doors" and then annouce it here? Or are trade proposals more often done in the open in forums like this and the Yahoo board?

45barilko6

Either way works I would say Dienesty...

With posted proposals, you might get a better coutner offer, however some managers might want to keep things quiet. It all depends on the 2 people talking I guess.

That being said...I am always open to talk trade for picks and/or players!

Right, negotiations behind closed doors. I don't believe you'd generally have to announce your trade, with the exception being during the draft. When the season has already started, Yahoo will announce the trade for you on their site. However, it's often a practice for the managers to post a rationale for the trade - much like in the draft rationale, I suppose.

I think that's about right...

I think the most common practice for trades is to say, "I'm looking for ___ help and willing to give up ___." From there, I would assume it's mostly "behind closed doors" so you can maximize the value of the trade. The particular trade I made was mostly "behind closed doors" from the beginning because Kolzig hadn't been drafted at that point. I don't like discussing players who haven't been drafted.

50barilko6

      Mon, Sep 19, 2005, 09:15
Yeah...

I think Dunham is a great risk/reward potential pick. Lehtonen is pretty much young and untested at the NHL level, save for a short stint at the end of last year, which he did excel in.

At this point there are so many different players who could be picked at anytime, its getting interesting.

Just read the headline at TSN.ca.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland has indicated that restricted free agent Pavel Datsyuk will likely re-join the team in the coming week. Datsyuk, who was involved in a contract dispute with the team during the offseason, signed a one-year contract with Russian Club Avangard Omsk on September 5....

pfb: Basically, R9 gave a two-man queue for round 13, and a one man queue for round 14. He got his #1 guy for round 13, and his round 14 guy was taken. I accidently took his #2 pick for round 13, not realizing he'd broken it out by round. In other words, I messed up.

If possible, I'd like R9 to chime in with his round 14 pick and have you change it in the draft. And we should pause until that time, since we would have had to wait anyway since his queue was exhausted.

but I don't think we should wait more than the 6 hours he would be allotted anyway to make the pick.

In the meantime, please don't draft until we get r9's round 14 pick.

pfb, 2 things.

You can actually stop the draft if we want to wait for R9. Just go to Admin > Stop League Draft. Go to the same place to restart when we're ready.

Second, to change the name of a player drafted, just click on the manager's name, then click on the player's name. As admin, you should have the ability to edit everything about the pick.

And, of course, I can do all the above. ;)

Thanks Little M. I'm aware of the situation. I was using the information from a source other than cbs, yahoo! and all the rest of the websites that list him at center. Hopefully the information that he might play RW will hold true-but i doubt it. I'd hate to see him drop to 3rd line center status.

If not I'm sure I'll work out my center glut one way or another.

What happens to players who are drafted but not listed in Yahoo? Is it customary for them to add the players sometime before the season starts? Or after they've played a game?

re: 112

Yahoo might add them prior to the start of the season, and if not, then you have to have a placeholder player on your roster if you want to maintain control of your player.

Example: mMoses picked Jeff Carter, who isn't listed yet on the Yahoo Fantasy Hockey. If mMoses wants to keep Carter, and he doesn't get called up until October, mMoses has to announce his intentions on a designated thread, and then leave an empty roster spot on his team until he can put Carter into it.

To expand on 113, generally a retired player is put on the person's team as the placeholder as it's much easier to track than to track whether or not the manager is keeping an open roster spot. If the manager drops said retired player before picking up the drafted player, then they lose the rights to the drafted player when the drafted player becomes available in Yahoo. If, however, they keep the retired player, then when the drafted player becomes available, they make the swap of retired player for drafted player.

This is the way it's been done in RIBC and it works like a charm. It prevents requiring people to announce their intentions or anything like that. Just keep an eye on the retired player with the "NA" next to their name.

If he can stick on that line (Spezza/Hossa), he should be just fine and dandy. Coach says, 'but who is going to play D?' and Spezza says 'who needs D if we have it in their zone the whole time?'

Plz don't bother wait for me anymore... if i havent picked in the first hour, skip my pick... geez...

I was freakin camping... and just simply had no time to post i would be away... i even tried to phone a friend to post on the board not to wait for me... it didn't work... Just to show you how freakin considerate i am, i did drive home tonight to make my pick...

I'm a pretty fast drafter usually... and a fierce competitor. ask around if you don't know me...

Btw, i'm not the one who voted for pause on week-end... i try to be as considerate as possible when drafting... but when i do get blame to hold up the draft twice and the first time i did take time i didn't have to send a Q and the second time its a week-end pause, it's really cheap IMHO...

Now i'm going back camping... and i'm serious, don't wait for me to pick... even if the draft is on pause... Those not happy with my explanation should seriously think about getting a life.

Absolutely not, during a draft pause. It has always been my opinion that the clock and the draft pauses should only be set up to be as long as you're willing to wait for someone. If people only want to give someone 24 hours, then don't set a draft pause and make the clock 24 hours. It's like a football league I was in where everyone agreed on a 6 hour clock, yet those same people started complaining if you took longer than 3 hours to pick. Well, if you want to complain after 3 hours, then set a 3 hour clock. It's that simple.

My personal opinion is that all of us have lives outside of sports and that every consideration should be made for that. Some, if not most, of us have jobs, which requires sleep. Thus, a daily (nighttime) draft pause makes sense. And some, if not most, of us have plans for the weekends, so it makes complete sense to have a weekend draft pause.

As of right now, we're on target to complete the draft on the 1st of October. That's fine and I see no reason to change anything from what it currently is. I know it can be frustrating to wait for someone when you're next on the clock, but often times the best thing to do is to just not pay attention until you get that email stating you're on the clock.

I'm in complete agreement with #153. I admit I do get annoyed with the long waits as well, but that's my problem and not anyone else's so I'm not going to get on anyone else's case about it.

I'm thinking we should target finishing by 11pm on Friday and if we aren't on pace to do that by 11pm Tuesday, I'd like to see the clock adjusted downward at the end of each day to meet that goal. That will leave some time before the start of the season without cutting it too close.

Actually, I should have known the first time. The pick is registered as having been made by tommyd, so clearly he's still interested. He probably got the "You're on the Clock" message for his Round 19 pick and just went and made the pick without realizing he had missed his Round 18 pick. I already sent him an email regarding this.

I'd guess after the first week, unless they're too busy. Then, maybe two weeks? Perhaps even after the first game... It's a tossup, really. But if he is playing LW instead, it will very likely get changed sooner or later.

I did peruse the "Help" section on the Yahoo page, but they made no mention of what the prerequisite was for the position change.

They did however have this to say, "All position eligibility requests are reviewed by Yahoo! Sports and confirmed with our hockey sources. Due to the nature of the review process, we are unable to comment on each individual player request."

Sounds to me like it's on a request basis... If that's the case, then ill be on thier case early about Cooke.

I've spent the last little while entering our present rosters onto our Yahoo teams, but it seems like Yahoo has removed all the retired players.

So instead of having retired players put onto teams as placeholders for rookies not yet in the database, I will pick some very unknown players instead. It shouldn't be a problem, as I foresee all the rookies taken so far being added within the first week.

I am entering the teams as we speak, and I can have them done pretty much right after the last pick. The only catch is that KKB needs to tell me who he wants to drop before I can submit them as official.

As for the players not in the database, I will post a list here on this thread of who I put in as substitutes.

I suggest we don't stop the clock at 9:00 tonight so that we can just run this draft out to the end...We seem to always get stuck on Hubble and Tommy.

That way I can input all the teams tonight, have our 2 day waivers, and still make moves before the first game.

Any thoughts?

I suggest we don't stop the clock at 9:00 tonight so that we can just run this draft out to the end...We seem to always get stuck on Hubble and Tommy.

I don't see how that's going to happen at this point given that Hubble has been skipped and Tommy has made his pick.

Further, why penalize the last few managers just because a few people want to finish tonight? Is there seriously THAT big of a difference between finishing tonight and finishing tomorrow morning (if it comes to that)? There will still be time to "input all the teams, have our 2 day waivers, and still make moves before the first game" even if we finish by tomorrow night, which is guaranteed at this point.

Telling those managers at the end of the draft that they don't get the same luxuries as the rest of us just because you feel like it is far from fair.

Trust me, I don't mind if we finish tonight. But, to simply toss out the rules our draft has used for 20+ rounds just to finish tonight, particularly when it affects managers who clearly can't respond if they need that clock, is completely unfair.

From the rationale thread...

The more games he starts the more his awful GAA and SAV% will affect PD's ratios. To me, he's like having a SP in baseball who gets 200 IP of 5.00 ERA 1.40 WHIP. No thanks.

R9, how do you figure that? Here's WAS's W-L-T with Kolzig's corresponding GAA and Sv%

2003: 23-46-10, 2.89, .908
2002: 39-29-8, 2.40, .919
2001: 36-33-11, 2.79, .903
2000: 41-27-10, 2.48, .909
1999: 44-24-12, 2.24, .917
1998: 31-45-6, 2.58, .900
1997: 40-30-12, 2.20, .920

Kolzig is consistently right around his career averages of 2.56 GAA and .909 Sv%, even "last" year when the team was horrible. Obviously, his W total dipped "last" year, but if he can manage 20 W's, a 2.60 GAA, and .910 Sv%, he'll be a solid pick in the 11th round.

Compare it more to someone like Kevin Millwood: 192 IP, 2.86 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and only 9 Wins.

I wouldnt write off the caps or the rangers just yet ....

they might not be all that great on paper - the new rules coupled with the tighter calls from the refs = uncharted waters IMO ....

the caps could very well be a .500 team

For what it's worth, I'm not looking for stellar numbers from him, just a large number of consistent starts. I'm not going to win any goalie stats with these guys, but the idea is to keep in the middle on the netminder stats while the offensive guys do their thing.

Even if he does what he did in 2003, a 2.89 GAA is awful. Thats like a 5.00 ERA to me. About as far as you can get actually to the AL-leading ERA of Kevin Millwood. ;) More like a Runelvys Hernandez, who got 8 wins (meh) and 87 K's (meh) in 155 IP. His ratios were awful too.

At some point the return on investment is negative, at least when compared to what else could be had, and imho Kolzig could be close to zero there. I think hoping he can get a 2.60 GAA on a worse team then when he got a 2.89 is a tad unrealistic...

With the long layoff, it'll be interesting to see how well the teams actually do. My guess is that the goalies are going to have the upper hand early on since offensive timing will need to be rebuilt on some of these teams from scratch. Even lines that have played together haven't done so in a long time.

Yeah, Millwood was a bad example, but that 2.86 GAA was also the highest of Kolzig's career since he became a full-time starter. I would expect him to be more around the respectable 2.50 again. Their D is young and has some experience, so I would actually expect them to be better than "last" year.

Besides, they're not doing so bad tonight after a game last night (both games against predicted offensive powerhouses). ;)

Well, I received my answer from yahoo regarding players...sort of.

I asked a question regarding about why some players who have played in the league are not in the db while some rookies are.

Hello,

Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Fantasy Sports.

Due to NHLPA rules, no rookie or player rejoining the league can be
added to Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Hockey until after he joins the union and
plays a game this season. All players added to the game will be
introduced to the player pool via waivers. Rookies and veterans who are
not in the game will be added to the available player pool as soon as
possible during the season.

There is no set timeframe for the addition of new players, so you may
not see player additions on the day following their NHL debut. To view
the latest additions and position eligibility news, please click the
"Player Adjustments" link from your league overview page.

Thanks for your patience as we update our available player list.

Thank you again for contacting Yahoo! Customer Care.

Regards,

Marshall

A quick comment/question:

new/added players will be added to waivers...

is it fair to force these teams to move to waiver priority 14~ to add their -drafted- players?

or will the commish be moving these players onto our teams for us?

Oh, you missed the fine print...

"This rule only applies for rookies not named Crosby, who if we didn't add would result in millions of emails asking why he's not available to draft."

Same reason Smallworld offered ARod at 3B a few years ago and didn't make the same position switch for many other players who were known to be switching positions.
