Huge brain fart on my part yesterday--how did I leave Calder on the pine with a slot open? Arghh!

Nice production out of Smyth, Little M. It's always funny to see those guys with 1 SOG who score--on one hand you're like "very efficient" and on the other hand "you need to shoot more, you idiot!"

I left Gionta and Maxim Afiniganov on the bench...5 points between them, plus good powerplay and penalty minute stats...

ouch...

My team is falling appart at the seems. No Kovalchuk it would appear, Boynton not signed, Bure hurt, Garon fell appart like a cheap suit after being staked to a 4-0 lead... Nice start. :)

I only just realized that we were playing h2h and not fantasy points. Hmmm--I've really got to pay more attention!

That's why we can't pick up some of those players immediately--you can't make lineup changes until the match is over.

Also, where can i find the area that shows how many games /82 have been played?

Too bad we don't have a category for GWG. I've already got 4 in 2 days.

We're definitely playing roto, and the games played link is at the bottom of the roster page for every team under "Maximum Games Played".

How does Yahoo determine if a players unscheduled missed game will count against the projected total?

Last night Derek Morris was scratched from his game and Yahoo counted that missed game as a played one, giving me 7 used games (5 from Oct. 5, 2 from last night, one being Morris')... Yet i notice that even though i had Ray Whitney starting on Oct. 5, they didn't count his missed game against my total. Am i just not understanding how this works?

Upon further review, it seems that they tabulate games correctly for players who are on the IR and left on starting lineups, but not players who are late scratched or scratched without prior notice that are in starting lineups. I guess i just burned a defenceman game then? That still doesn't explain how i am projected to be over the games played limit though...

If no one has made a claim on a dropped player then the priority should still be in reverse order of the draft positions.

You'll be able to see if anyone has picked up a waiver player by checking all transactions. Unfortnately I can't check from work, but when I return home I can review it.

Thanks guys. This was my first ever roto league and im about as surprised as you are at how things went.

It was a dog fight early on, but my team was able to somehow break free and build up momentum in several catagories (almost single handedly thanks to Jagr) and really from there it was protecting my lead as much as i could. I have a feeling with the way things were going that if the season were to continue another month or two, i would probably have been drawn back into the pack, seeing as Jagr was cooling off, and having only 1 quality goalie giving me starts.

Extremely fun season though, can't wait for another go around.

I would like to add my congratulations to The Dienasty for his win.

I had a lot of fun during the year and hope that we will do this again next year. I learned a few things this year, including:

1) Goalie points are really unpredictable. I spent my first two picks on goalies, but was unable to predict that the hot goalies at the end of the year would include Emery, Huet, Toskala, Aubin and Lundqvist.

2) Because of the maximum number of games allowed at each position, it is necessary to pace yourself during the year. You don't have to have a full line up going every day, because every game played by your 5th best center may take away a game from your top centers at the end of the year.

Once again, it was a lot of fun and I am already looking forward to making a better effort next year.

Looking back, picking so many Pittsburgh players, plus my weak goaltending really killed me.

Here is to next year!

I will be looking to put this league together again for the 2006/2007 year.

Changes I would like to make: Smaller roster size to encourage more movement, and perhaps including a small number of keepers...

Last years teams:

Dienesty
KKB
Rogue9
Perm Dude
Moses
Hubble
Phillyboy
Little M
SuperFreak
Beezer
Wolfer
TommyD
Isles72

If anyone remembers a manager abandoning their team, or holding up the draft for extra long periods of time, let me know...

Otherwise, let me know if you are interested in coming back, and your thoughts on a smaller roster and adding a small amount of keepers...

I'm OK with keepers, assuming that the first year of keepers would be next year's draft. That is, we would not be keeping players from last year's roster.

I don't remember any issues with the roster size last year. I do remember having problems with one of the wing slots, but that was probably due to my poor drating skills.

Personally...not a fan of hockey head to head. With baseball and football its ok, because the schedules are pretty exact.

Every team plays 1 football game per week, and every team plays 6 baseball games per week.

With hockey I have seen a weekly variance from a team having 2 games for a given week right up to 4 games for a different team in that same week. Then you are playing a "schedule" pool as much as you are players and stats.

I've never used the point system, so I would need more info on that...

Just my thoughts on that...

I'd prefer to keep the keepers low (3 is good), as it's easier to increase than decrease that going forward. I'd also prefer roto scoring - it adds unique challenges that are quite interesting and gives value to guys that aren't worth much otherwise.

allrighty , I'm down .Roto does have its unique challenges

I remember making a big comeback for 3rd place last year after spending the majority of the season in the cellar .

btw , yahoo hockey is up and running as of last night

hope you dont think I'm nuts by waivering here , but I'm going to have to trim back my yahoo's as my attention to my own keeper league is suffering .

therfore I'm going to sit out of this league for this year

Alright, I am back from the East, and I would love to set up a starting date for the draft so that everyone can prepare accordingly.

I like the number 3 for keepers. Gives you an attachment to a small number of players from your team, but still allows for a great draft pool year after year.

So far we have in:

Barilko6
Hubble
Wolfer
Perm Dude
SuperFreak
Beezer
Little M
Dienesty
TommyD

That is 9 teams. Last year we had 14. I would love to cut it off at 12 teams this year. Leaving 3 empty spots, first come first serve.

Any other thoughts?

I am OK with 3 keepers. Should we have a limit of the number of goalies that can be acrried over? I would suggest that we limit the keepers to one goalie.

Yeah, I like that idea. Maybe even the thought of no more than 1 player can be kept at any one position? So only 1 C, LW, RW, D, G can be kept, to a maximum of 3 in total.

Others' thoughts?

Hey guys, I'd like to join in the fun if there's room.
I have never been involved in a Yahoo Hockey league before, but I've done a few Yahoo Baseball leagues, and TSN Ultimate Hockey is my favorite game. Finished 8th in ESDNHL last season, as WWR #90. I followed your draft last season with great interest, but was too late to try to join. This time I don't want to miss out.
So if you'll have me, I'd be thrilled!

re 92: Cobwebs...since you followed our draft with great interest, I am a little hesitant to let you join. When you saw me start picking up all of those Penguins players, you should have sent me a warning email, asking me what the heck I was thinking.

re 93: I spent some good hours trying to come up with some crazy scoring stats options, trying to think about how I can mess up your perfect strategy from last year Dienesty, but to no avail. So, Yep...lets go with the same roster size and scoring as last year.

Ps. Cobwebs, we would love to have you!

It looks like all that's left to figure out is the start date, draft order and the matter of bringing 3 more managers.

I say we can set a start date as soon as we get two more managers.

Just to clarify things, are these still the roster/categories we're playing with?

Roster Size: 3 C, 3 LW, 3 RW, 5 Defense, 2 Goalies and 5 Bench for a 21 Man Roster.

Skaters: G, A, +/-, SOG, PIM, PPP
Goalies: W, Sv%, GAA, SHO

With regards to the questions you posed in the Yahoo info email barilko, i think snaking the draft every year using a reverse order of finish the previous year is the best way to go. For this season though it would be the the ol' names-in-a-hat method. Then again, ive never played a keeper league so someone with more experience might want to chime in that's more preffered or common.

As far as a start date, i say we get going a day or two after the last manager signs up at Yahoo.

Perm Dude, thanks for setting that up on Kafenatid. Much appreciated.

That makes you assistant commissioner, all Kafenatid duties fall to you! lol

Perm Dude can set the order through Kafenatid once everyone signs up there, and hopefully we can still get things going by Tuesday, or earlier.

I suggest a 6 hour time clock for picks, and then have the clock stopped from Midnight until 8:00 EST.

Does that work for everyone?

As soon as KKB sends me back the signup information, I'll send it off to everyone. 6 hours is fine with me--we can adjust as needed. Because of the length of the draft and the rapidly-approaching season, the clock might come into play late in the draft, so the use of queues is strongly encouraged.

For sure on the trades, but I think it would be best to wait for the managers all to be settled before hand.

And since we have only 3 keepers with such a huge roster, do we still want to do a straight draft (which is usually used for keeper leagues) or still a snake draft? Since we didn't discuss this at all, I will go with the majority vote.

Wouldn't any non-keeper be out-of-bounds as far as trade talk goes, since they're all going to be re-inserted into the draft pool for this upcoming season anyways? Or am i not understanding this element of keeper pools correctly?..

I would think that all rostered players are potential keepers until keepers are actually declared. With that in mind, any currently-rostered player can be moved around, IMO, until keepers are declared. At that point all other players are back in the pool. (Some of mine will settle into the deep end...).

Re #172: I think a straight draft would be best--we have only 3 keepers out of so many players!

BTW, any interest in juggling number of positions? I had a lot of centers to try to squeeze into the game, good RW but crappy LW. Maybe we go with just Wings as a position?

LW was the toughest position to fill with quality players. I like the idea of losing the distinction between R and L.

Still too early to start all the trading. Maybe in late August/September when peoples vacations wrap up.
Declare a keeper deadline date and then work the trades.
If trades are made now then the players swapped should become automatic keepers.

I'm fine with the positions.

I could go either way on the wingers.

I do think we should hold onto all trading until our final managers are set, to allow all managers to have equal chance at acquiring available players.

All players currently on a roster are open to be traded in a keeper league. Last year our draft went pretty quick, so I think the late August deadline that Super alluded to would work fine.

I also agree a snake draft would work best, all teams have 3 nice keepers.

Thoughts?

I'd prefer to keep a distinction between LW and RW, i think it makes the draft more challenging. But ill go with the flow.

How about draft order? Reverse finish from last year? Randomized?

Alright, it looks like there are enough managers to keep the Wing designates.

Amazingly enough, we have all 12 managers returning! That is awesome!

So...I say all trading may begin. Draft picks may be traded, but I think we need to establish a draft order to factor in the trades.

Two Proposals that Dienasty mentioned:

1. Random Order, Snake Draft
2. Reverse Order of Last year's finish, still a snake draft.

I am ok with either one, so I say we put it to a vote. Vote 1. Vote 2.

Thoughts?

Alright, it looks like Option 2 is taking the early lead, which means the draft order will look like this:

Tax Penalties 42.5
tommyd's enforcers 44
philflyboy 48.5
Cobwebs Goaldiggers 48.5
Hubble's 55
Perm Dudes 58.5
the radio roberts 71 (wolfer)
99 Cent Shooters 78 (Barilko6)
Fou QuatreVingtHuit 80 (Beezer)
Little M 82
The Dienasty 84
SuperFreaks 67's 88

And then of course reversed for even rounds.
The only thing needed to be worked out is the tie between Cobwebs and Philly. I suggest a good ole fashioned round of Rock, Paper, Scissors between the two...

Guys I have available:

Marc-Andre Fleury: The young star goalie of a young star team. Posted great numbers, but imagine how much he is going to improve. Keep him for years!

Roberto Luongo: MVP like season! Great stats across the board, and very durable. Still very young too! Only 28!

Daniel Briere: Posted great numbers while rotating lines in Buffalo. Will play much more in Philly. 100 point powerplay man.

Daniel Sedin: Put up surprisingly great, but quiet numbers in VCR. Only getting better each year.

Brian Rafalski: Playing with Lidstrom now, in an offensive team system. Watch his points jet up!

Patrick Elias: If he stays healthy, he can put up MVP like numbers...get him cheap here!

Vesa Toskala: For those Leafs fans who need the starting goalie!

Good Point Little M. I haven't really checked at Yahoo! I was basing my keepers on last years final positions as listed in this thread and thus didn't make any trade offers.

2006/07 season
Ovechkin LW
Malkin C
Nabokov G

If it has to change I'd like to have a couple of more days to think about it and if possible make trade offers based on the yahoo! positions.

We will set the deadline for midnight tonight, and then I can have all the draft stuff ready for Thursday AM, or do we want to wait a bit for training camps to get underway?

Last year we finished the draft in 10 days, we started on the 12th of September and finished on the 22nd, with a minor slow hiccup at the start of the draft to get everyone on board.

This year we are going 3 less rounds with the same managers, so 10 days is a good target again, meaning we can wait to start things if that is what we all want.

Season starts on September 29 this year.

I wouldn't want to delay the draft too long. I think that we should start on Monday at the latest. We don't need traning camps to be open for the first few rounds of the draft and 21 rounds in 10 days is extremely quick and shouldn't be expected every year.

Ok...Draft has been requested.

It will go 21 rounds, and with the 3 keepers, it will be a snake starting with the last place team from last year.

To honor our champion from last year, the password this year will be super.

Will post the league number when I get it.

Are we starting the draft tomorrow? I realize that Taxman has expressed a preference to wait until Kafenatid is running, but the season starts in 20 days and we have 18 rounds of drafting to do, so I wouldn't want to wait too long.

I am open to suggestions. Although requested, our draft hasn't been received yet, and I don't know how long it is going to take to get it up and running.

I suggest we start Tuesday morning no matter what, as I agree, we have a lot of drafting to do!

Missing from Yahoo:

I've got a little problem for the upcoming draft... maybe someone will be willing to help me out.

I'm leaving town this morning for a combination of work(week days)/camping (week-end) until wednesday next week. Its just been confirm now. As much as i hate this, maybe i'll need the commish to make picks for me until i come back. Perhaps i could e-mail guidelines, but there is no way i can make a 10 round queue.

There are player i am willing to reach for. So perhaps i could leave with yahoo ranking. Except if someone have a better idea.

I live in MTL, maybe some1 else in this draft could call on my cell phose eveytime i'm up. You guys have any idea?

By the way...in Yahoo...do you intend to keep the yahoo "Can't Cut List". Their "list" always struck me as a way to penalize a team with a star that suffers a season/career ending injury or pulls a Bertuzzi type stunt destroying fantasy value for multiple seasons.

Just asking.

The correct answer to what they have in common is "they aren't on the team that's going to win the league this year". :)

We need to get this draft moving - less than two weeks until the first puck drops. We need to be using the draft thread until OTC starts our draft.

I have access now, and will have access for 10 minutes maybe tomorrow... i don't have access to my e-mails, and wont for the next 3-4 days minimum...

As i said, i will live with yahoo's best pick even though that is not optimal way to draft. If you guys are willing to wait then that is awesome, but if not, don't wait for me. I would hate to hold the draft for 1 week.

Only way to reach me is via cell phone 514-863-0622, but since i will work in a oil raffinery for the next week, i'm not allowed to receive any call... so it's not real usefull.

I'll wait for instruction and will check back in the morning tomorrow.

We'll be cutting it exceedingly close if we wait till Wednesday to get going again. That would leave us 9 days to complete 16.5 rounds.

You could make your 4th round pick (which has been OTC for a while now), then I'd suggest leaving a long queue good at least for 5-6 rounds. That way you would be able to have a hand in picking your most important players.

What is the rule regarding who can be drafted? Does the player have to be on Yahoo? Does the player have to be in the NHL? With this being a keeper league, how far are we allowing teams to go in drafting players? For example, can Perm Dude draft Declan?

PS: Congratulations Perm Dude.

If someone wants somebody not in the Yahoo database, they can post their player intentions on this site and then draft a placeholder from KKB, someone who is obviously not going to be drafted.

Then I will contact Fred and see if we can get that player added to his database.

The 5.12 pick doesn't look right.
Has the wrong player been picked or is it a placeholder?

it was the first person on Taxman's queue. I wondered about it too but thought it was a local person he knew something about.

I suspect that it's a LW that Taxman wants, with a simular name but on another team.

I think you are right. I called Taxman and he wants Semin from Washington instead of the pick that was made. Barilok could you please change that pick please.

Change made.

As per my post #365, i will be only able to check in once in while, so I made my queue longer to cover things off.

Thanks commish. Another stoooopid mistake. Semin was my intended target...just can't seem to focus on the matters at hand.

Was hoping Whitney would slip to me! Damn.

Hubble's queue is empty, so we'll have to await his return in a few hours.

i really don't see how i can manage a Q for tomorrow... i feel bad about that. Maybe i'll sleep on it and go for homer reach. A receipe for last place.

Geez Hubble sure hope you're not stuck in the dehydrator...
if your homer reach is too ridiculous then we'll know you've been sniffing the glycol.

Sorry, it was not my intent to hold up the draft by picking Hubble's last player on his Q.
But I'm very happy with getting Whitney;-)
I didn't have any luck with my D-men last season, so it was a high priority for me to get a stud D early.
After taking Whitney, I had to sit in agony while good skaters fell off the board one by one until it was my turn again. But that's how it should be:-)
The 7.06 pick also surprised me.

Brad Isbister?!? What? That pick can't even be justified by the excuse that there is a similar named player our there. I even checked the alphabetical listing of players and he is sandwiched between nobodies....

Wolfer, the people want to know!!! ????

I think I am just going to go with a Recap myself. There is never anything rational when it comes to my choices.

Guys, leaving a short queue in Kafenatid is never a bad idea...

I have added Tommy D as a designated picker...so he can make his pick, my two and then his pick again. Hopefully that will save us the hours lost yesterday.

Note to Perm Dude re: Pick 7.07
Yahoo has Pominville listed as a RW, not LW as listed on Kafenatid. I don't know if this makes any difference to your future picks, but I thought I would let you know.

I am here on kafenatid...Tommy D has run 6 hours off the clock. I will make my picks and then the commish needs to decide whether or not to cut his time in next following rounds.

I guess as the rule states, Tommy D will get another 6 hours to burn through. Not the best thing to happen seeing as how we are already fighting up against the clock, but what can we do?

Tommy actually burned through 7.5 hours if you count the paused time as Philly made his pick at 6:30 in the AM.

Wondering what the plans are for the weekend. Right now, Kafenatid is showing the clock to be turned off on Saturday and Sunday. The reason that I am asking is that I cannot spend much time on the computer this weekend, but if the clock is going to be on, I will try to set up a large queue and check in when I get a chance.

I think as Commish you can select for him (a place holder) and let the draft continue.

When he shows up...have him designate his pick(s) and you can swap it for the place holder (is Bobby Hull available). That gets us back to drafting...and maybe will encourage him to leave a queue.

I think you used the free form commissioner only draft tool to correct my intended selection of Semin. Same process...just pick a player that is off the charts as a draft prospect.

Will you take a long day, not turning off my queue, and the ranking I used as I was setting up my queue as an excuse?

I think we were all shocked to see Izzy up there that high...

If wolfer and tommyd were to trade picks, 7.06 for 8.02, tommyd would get izzy and wolfer could pick, and we'd get this thing rolling again?
Fair? Don't know, but I'm sick of waiting:-(

STOP

Per post 399, Little M's queue was not intended for use in round 9. I'd recommend that his pick be undone and we wait for in the morning. I'll have my queue ready in case I'm not one before he picks in the AM.

I agree with The Beezer on both accounts. I have taken it upon myself and created a new thread for the league. Nothing I can do about LittleM's pick.
