Congratulations to HoserNight in Canada for winning both the League and the playoffs. Sorry that I couldn't be more of a challenge in the finals, but I had been relying on my goaltending and it disappeared in the last two weeks.

I would also like to thank Dr. Doom for organizing the draft and administering the league.

Here we go again ... get ready for About Time Hockey Starts V!

Yahoo! fantasy hockey should be launched very soon, perhaps as early as next week. If you recognize your team name (Yahoo! ID is also included), please post a note here if you are interested in returning—or not—for 2006. A commitment to keeping up with a timed draft is expected from all managers.

Draft Type: Offline Draft
Max Teams: 14
Scoring Type: Head-to-Head
Max Moves: 30
Max Trades: No maximum
Trade Reject Time: 2
Trade End Date: March 9
Waiver Time: 2 days
Can't Cut List Provider: Yahoo! Sports
Trade Review: League Votes
Post Draft Players: Follow Waiver Rules

Can we come to a consensus before we begin regarding drafting players outside the Yahoo! pool? (Alexander Ovechkin, for example, was in the kafenatid.net player list but not yet available in Yahoo!.)

We do need to come to a consensus on the off list players. The issue for me is if you don't allow it, you are potentially allowing the last picker in the first round an equivalent of three picks. If you have an Ovechkin or Crosby like player from last year, or Hasek from a previous year, that team has a serious advantage in how it drafts, knowing that it has an ace in the bag.

Personally, I would like to have an open draft, anything or anyone goes. My $.02

single number = 9

I just needed to get confirmation that KKB would be able to accomodate our league , since the payment is going his way via snail mail. I don't have Paypal nor do I want to sign up for it.

He has set the league to "rock and roll" so I don't have to worry about having the draft stopped until the payment shows up in his bank.

I will turn it on right now!

Okay, we are off and trundling. Hopefully we can maintain a reasonable pace, I will be monitoring the picks and speed of same and if we are running into the season a clock will be instituted.

I don't expect I will be away at all this weekend, seems like Winter outside, so anyone wants to leave queues, I can monitor that as well.

There are some nice features built into the queue tool so you only have to expose your first available pick and not the whole list.

Good luck to everyone.

Right now we are projected to finish in November, if you are okay with that, we can continue without a clock. If not just use a queue, certainly you have an idea who you might pick.

It probably won't happen very often that your pick will fall in the hours you are at school and that your whole turn would be missed during those hours. Even if it did you could still make up that pick without too many going by.

I don't think there are any picks left that are going to destroy your draft if you don't get them.

It might be time to invoke a "slacker penalty" (example from my recent football league draft ... we did someting similar in ATHS baseball but the result was half time for the next four rounds):

Slacker penalty: If a manager runs the full clock twice without making a pick, his/her team will receive only half the normally allotted time for the next two rounds.

This requires the commish to monitor the draft clock a bit more than desired, so it's up to Dr. Doom. Should the entire league pay the price for chronic tardiness or just the guilty manager(s)?

I am as frustrated with the slow pace as anyone, but would not like to see the clock moved to 4 hours before Monday. I was going to suggest pausing the clock for the weekend, but given where we are in the draft it is not advisable. As long as we get through a round per day, we will just fininsh before the season starts.

While I wish we could all get into the perfect draft, it probably isn't going to happen. If Superfreaks queue runs out I might pause the draft. It is unfortunate that we get a number of people who committed to a draft, and are making efforts to keep it going and others who would just as soon pick at their leisure.

It's hard to say that anyone is wrong as long as the draft finishes a few days before the season starts.

Personally, I have a job that allows me some freedom, but additionally I take the time knowing that I volunteered to administer this, so I make extra efforts to check for queues and such things.

We are getting close to being on schedule to finish on time, but just barely. I would have loved to pause for the weekend but unless we got further ahead I would hate to get us further behind.

Whatever I do is going to be right for some and wrong for others. We will finish on time (one way or another). I suppose if we all picked with a few minutes of each of we would be complaining the we have to be online all the time.

I will continue to monitor queues with other peoples help and watch the clock, if we do get to far behind, the time between picks will be reduced, probably by an hour until we can't finish comfortably, then reduce again.

Our current status as we are on a Moose pick.

Picks Made 176
Time Per Pick 1:45:06
Picks Left 48
Projected Finish 10/02/06 03:09:54 am

I am not worried at this point, but will continue to monitor, many of us do have lives besides hockey.

Most of the picks will be on the draft grid by the end of today. I will then keep updating it until the draft ends so I don't have to do them all in a panic.

No problem Brian...thanks for covering my ample rear during these drafts. I have to learn to pay more attention to turning the que off.

I hate it when I wait around for multiple hours to see if my queue is still "best case". I feel like I should get to review my selections (especially with turn around picks) after waiting around for another manager that will not leave a queue. But I keep screwing up the queue "turn off" switch. .....sigh

Doom, are we going to roll over last year's categories or switch to the new defaults for F/D (as copied below from Yahoo!)?

We now use Shots on Goal (SOG). This stat, for Forwards and Defensemen, replaces Game-Winning Goals (GWG). We found that some of you prefer not to use GWG because it's a low-volume stat and depends too much on luck. We agree. SOG is far more predictable and provides you with more scoring opportunities.

I have submitted a request to Kafenatid to host the draft again. We will narrow down the necessary rule changes, get the teams into the league in Yahoo and Kafenatid.

We need to make sure that everyone understands who is eligible to draft, in regards to the player list at Yahoo (rookies, etc ..).

I would also like to encourage you to make use of the queue system or set realistic expectations for a timeframe for people to make their picks. Some of us would like this to race along, others are content to finish before the season starts. As long as everyone knows what to expect we should be able to deal with the results of it.

I like the SOG instead of GWG.

I hope/wish you would disable the Yahoo Can't Cut List.

Toral would be just fine as a manager if someone fails to reappear. But on a less serious note, we can always use another right winger (for target practice)

Thanx, Taxman. Is there also hope if another person applies, to expand the league by 2 (assuming we need an even number)? I realize the time for decision-making is short.

GWG was always stupid. SOG is fun.

With the NHL season beginning September 29, it seems doubtful that we'll have everyone signed up at Yahoo! and kafenatid and complete the draft in time for Week 1. Should we just project a Week 2 (October 8) start for scoring?

With the Moose on the loose, sounds like we can return our league to 14 managers and provide me the benefit of having me ears beat down once or twice less by the Curby, Dan and that Moose person who has been offerred a teaching position at the Fantasy Commissioner University. :>)

off point...but did I ever tell you about the days of yesteryear when the the good Dr and I entered a combo-team for a GURU board Small World league, each combo- team composed of two teams having different managers, one limited to players of the eastern conference, the other to western...or maybe is was in baseball with American and National league divisions. Doom, I'm concerned that Akron Senators hasn't signed up for the draft after two e-mails from me. He also hasn't checked on his Yahoo! football team this week. I've just sent a third message but if you want to jettison him, I have a reliable replacement on standby. How about setting a deadline of, say, 6:00 p.m. Eastern today? I know the commish can remove managers in Yahoo! before the draft but it might also be a good idea to reduce the league size from 14 to 12.

I also think we should forget about Dan (you probably have already). Two e-mails without a response and no further posting by him here since September 8 says it all for me.

Is it safe to assume that you want to begin the draft Monday?

If we have an odd number of teams, I don't mind dropping out. Late Thursday and most of Friday will not be good for me, so unless we are substantially finished by then I will probably be a problem for the draft. I don't mind leaving small queues, but not for 3 or 4 rounds. I also don't mind being skipped, if we are in round 10 or so, but not if we are in round 5.

IRA...(or anyone else)... ask now if you need help on leaving a queue. The kafenatid queue system is very logical and very flexible. If you can't ck every few hours to see when you are up again...leaving a queue is the only way to keep the draft moving.

Ira, you should have seen last night that the draft would reach you early this morning. Leave a queue next time that you are not around. Do like Toral who has left instructions (in this thread) on who not to draft with his second round pick.

Doom, Ellis works the 7-to-7 schedule. Curby's a Californian and normally leaves a queue ... so it is either unavailable or empty.

Please institute a clock when we get to the turnaround. Six hours to start has worked well in the leagues that I commish; the slacker penalty is half time for four rounds after a manager runs the clock twice without making a pick.

How about an overnight pause of midnight to 9 a.m. Eastern? No weekend pause.

Most of us have been very prompt making picks, I am happy about that. A couple of long turns is forgivable but it is time to get the clock on.

I will turn it on tonight or at the end of the round whichever comes first. No weekend pause, 6hrs but we will re-evaluate at the end of each turn back to the top and back down. If the end-draft time is looking to far out, I will reduce the clock.

Moose, sorry about my confusion, I am almost 50.

I like Ms. Lemoose's approach. The hours and no weekend pause are right on. We should be prepared to consider moving to 4 hours in a while if we are getting bogged down. The turnaround is a fair time to institute a clock. The penalty is well designed.

I may head to bed early. My queue should be good for 2 rounds if we suddenly start to zoom tonight.

Instructions:
-- in round 3, do not pick a RW;
-- in round 4, (should we zoom tonight) just take whoever's at the top

I like the clock, however, with the late start of this league, I am in favor of a very short clock, thus encouraging peopple tp leave queues and to be sure the queue's are available with multiple DP.

I suggest a 2 hour clock. I have not given up on starting with week one. This can be done if everyone commits to vigilant attendance.

Or we could start in week three after we see how the NHL rosters/power play units shake out and draft accordingly. Certainly hurts the waiver advantage of a late first round pick.

Brilliant! Curby is up, he has a queue, I'll give him a bit to see if he's sure about the pick, then I'll presume we are good.

I will be out most of the day tomorrow, going to the north, join up with the younger of the doom family, bat it around for a few hours, then head back home.

I'll leave ample instructions, Vincible will again have the keys.

Thanks everyone, let's keep it going.

I am going to presume that if a queue is available, that if the managers team is up, he is comfortable with the pick he may end up with.

If you are going to be around for your pick and might want to mull it over before making that selection, put your queue on "not available". That seems logical, but I just made a pick for myself and realized that someone could easily have picked someone from my queue while I was browzin'.

I think Ira should be able to change his last pick. No one has picked after him, no-one's interests can be hurt.

The main consideration IMO should be this: if you don't allow a manager to repick in a situation like this, you create a strong disincentive against using queues. It becomes very tempting to think "Unclear situation. Changing positional scarcity. 5-hour clock. I can make it back within 5 hours. I don't think I'll leave a queue." That's bad.

I should have asked this question as soon as it happens because I wondered what was going on: last night after Chip timed out Ms. Lemoose was immediately listed as "MISSED PICK". I thot I should inquire but assumed that there was good reason for it (e.g. maybe she had messaged someone to skip her, get to the turnaround and she'd make both of her pix this morning). Curby and PD's pix were very quickly listed and we were back down to Ms. Lemoose again, who started out with a full 6:00 for her second pick.

Clear as mud, I know.

Chip should have timed out at 11:39 pm

Moose should have had about 20 minutes until the pause came on and finished this AM.

I went to change the clock but the pause was already on and I noticed that it was Moose's pick. I assumed that we were still on the way up the draft not back down.

I did not skip any picks, so I am now as confused as Christine at this moment.

OK, I'm glad we got to me, because I'm going to be out ffrom 11:45 until early this evening. I've put together the mother of all queues but unfortunately it comes with instructions which will get complicated if we really start to zoom.:

Round 14: pick a D.
Round 15: pick the top C or RW
Round 16: pick the top of whichever position (C or RW) wasn't picked in round 15.

If I get back early enough I'll remove ineligble players from my queue, which should make all this a little easier.

When I signed in this morning to make a 12th round pick, my team immediately went on the clock again with about 30 minutes to go for round 13. Why the draft skipped my 12.10 pick last night with plenty of time remaining remains the mystery. And that's probably what contributed to the very short clock that I encountered this morning for round 13.

*Ellis is very conscientious about leaving a queue; the draft progressed so quickly Friday that his player list was exhausted by the time his 12th round turn occurred.

As you can see from the time marker, pix for curby, pd, pd, and curby again were all made within 3 minutes of Chip's timing out. The program just skipped Ms Lemoose on the way up. My guess is that it had something to do with the attempt to change the draft clock.

If we want to treat this as a mystery to solve, the witness we want to examine is: whoever made the 4 curby and pd pix within 3 minutes of Chip's timing out. (I assume someone made all of them from queues.)

This person is the equivalent of the Perry Mason client seen running out of the apartment building a few minutes after the murder was committed: he must have seen something. In particular, he can confirm that 'MISSED PICK' was entered in Ms Lemoose's space when he picked for Curby.

I noticed that missed pick for Moose as well. I happened to check just as Chip timed out, then it jumped to Curby (who had a queue, and I picked Modin for him), then I took my two guys, then I picked Zhitnik for Curby.

At that point there was a new clock for Moose (as Toral noted), then the draft paused.

I dunno why Moose was skipped, but it certainly happened.

We are down to the last 4 picks. I am up to date on the Yahoo site for entering the players, when the draft is complete, I should be able to start the season.

Thanks to all for your help.

Does that mean that if we finish the draft tonight tomorrow's game will count?

I doubt it, the week ends on Sunday. I'll have to see the rules to see what Yahoo is doing with the early games and which week those results would be applied to.

Doom I don't usually refer to Yahoo! rankings, but when I did yesterday, I noticed a lot of players were gone.

I concluded, correctly, 354 that you must have been adding players as the draft went along. Most commissioners don't do it that way, so I give you my appreciation.

You can never tell early about draft speed. After getting off to a slow start, we went at warp speed.

If Chip is back to work for the night...you may have to pick a placeholder for him to activate the game tonight. Maybe the Mooster has a queue for him?

Great work on setting up/orchestrating/completing the draft.

Moose is up, then we have queues for the remainder of the teams.

Uh, no. He's on the clock during a draft pause.

Mind you, things are good. Not long ago some managers were wondering whether we'd be ready by week 3 or 4. We're pretty close to ready. Week 1 isn't a real week anyway; it might have been better to skip it just on principle.

The league, that is, is close to ready. My team is another story. Many of my players are over 35 years old, and may take a while to warm up.

Any spreadsheet guyz here who project standings from projections?

Okay, all the rosters have been updated. If anyone is interested in verifying their teams please check on Yahoo.

I'll make the draft results final in the next couple of hours, so if you find something not right, it is easiest to fix it before then.

Thanks, Dr. Doom ... this has to be the fastest "slow" draft I've ever experienced. ;-)

Can you also set up the League page to display the all-time ATHS rankings? If you haven't done this with other Yahoo! leagues, the process is quite simple:

From the league's home page, click Commissioner Tools. Under League Management, click Edit League History (it's probably the last item in that block). Then, select the Edit Season link for a particular year and click the radio button for ATHS. Click "Save and Continue" to proceed to the next year (they should be displayed in reverse chronological order) and repeat the process. Click "Done" when completely finished. The result will be an "All Time" tab on the league page that, when selected, displays the first, second, and third place winners as well as the individual manager's final position if he/she participated in the league during that year. There will also be a by-season drop-down that produces each season's playoff results, regular season standings ... and more.

Is it permissible to note that this feature which purports to record the so-called "all-time ATHS rankings" does not include the entire history of ATHS?

There's no "All-Time" tab on my league page.

But that's OK. Wow! Everything is there if you go to manager profile.

I had actually forgotten about 2002!

I remember 2002 now.

It was after that year that , at the strong recommendation of KKB, the "Max Moves" setting was changed from "No maximum" to "30". So the horror of 2002 will never happen to the league again ;)

Hmmm...I had actually forgotten that "Maximum Moves" had been changed to 30. If I had remembered that, I wouldn't have drafted a team fill of 38-year old men.

This is now going to require some careful strategy.

Toral, are you sure there's no All Time tab? It should be displayed on the league's home page thusly:
Standings - Schedule - Playoffs - All Time, then, on the right, a link to Head-to-Head Stats

I'm in. Had a nice run toward the end of last season (after a string of stupid matchup play decisions), and would like to build on that. I won 4 more games than Toral (and had 2 fewer losses) and finished 3 places behind him! That's just bad matchup play on my part.

It says "Join us in late August when registration begins". I guess we are not in late August yet.

The fantasy hockey registration button was on the site in the wee hours of Tuesday morning (not a figment of my sleep-deprived imagination). You're right, pfb ... all along it had been "late August" and now that's been changed to "early September."
