Current scoring categories vs the categories available. I'd prefer to balance these out. Maybe add Game winning goal and shorthanded points categories to skaters to offset the shutout category? Or remove one goalie category. Up for suggestions as usual and if enough responses I'll make adjustments.

Thanks for getting us rolling, CSF.

I do feel more balance could be introduced to mellow out the goalie stat effects on standingS. I’m in favor of introducing Blocks as a skater category. There’s enough historical data available to peg trends among skaters to make informed picks, and it’s a high counting stat (unlike goalie shoutouts for example).

The only down side is there’s not a lot variance among forward block totals, and the big blockers are basically exclusively defensemen.

Thanks CSF! Stoked for 2020 vision!

My vote would be for remove GAA and PIM. Alternate to GAA would be SO, either one.
In their place would be GWG and BLK. Alternate to BLK would be SHP, either one.

Increased appeal for good goalies on bad teams if we remove GAA.
Increasing appeal for defensemen isn't so bad. Giving some value to the PK specialists wouldn't be so bad either.
Mostly prefer GWG because the top skilled players tend to lead this category. H/PIM or BLK/H favours grit enough that adding value to the top skilled players wouldn't be an overwhelming factor.

Just some thoughts, not picky on specifics overall.

Cheers CSF

Agree with filthy about removing PIM, I think I've brought it up in the past, and actually was going to suggest removing GAA to balance out the goalie stats, with SO being the next one out if needed.

Not sure how I feel about blocked shots though, might be more inclined to add FOW or GWG myself.

If we keep SO I think GWG would be the skater equivalent

No objection to just adding blocks, or substituting them for PIM.

Against removing GAA.

Not sure what to think. First thought is that shooting percentage would be a category worth exploring, much like SO which is freakish, but maybe equally spread out between forwards and D. Just removing SO could also be an option.

I feel like Save Percentage and Goals Against Average are somewhat redundant. I would support dropping GAA altogether or dropping GAA and adding Saves. Making this swap would help boost goalies who play for poorer teams, hopefully making the goalie stats more competitive.

If we end up with 4 goalie categories I would support adding a skating category. I could support blocks, SH points, or face offs won.
I could also support swapping blocks for PM. I would not be in favor of GWG or shooting percentage.

I'm not a fan of FOW. Blocks would be OK as a replacement for PIM. Agree that GAA is a redundant category.

Never subscribed to Dobber but have looked at them before. I like the depth of their rankings and put more trust into them than I do Yahoo's prerankings. But I still try to trust my gut more than anything. Not sure why, I've done many a facepalm when reading over past rationales! But seriously, none of them are perfect. Dobber kind of let me down on a few hunches, and I've let myself down repeatedly. The preseason mags or expert columns are generally not as in depth as I'd like. Good to get up to speed and shake the rust.

I am really busy the next couple of weeks, so that might mess up the draft, depending on when it starts, so if you want to bring in a replacement, I am okay with that. Otherwise, I am back for more punishment.

I am not thrilled with any of the skater categories that we don't already have. Blocks might make some defensemen more attractive, but I don't know if that is particularly useful. I think the easiest way to better balance goalie and skater categories is to remove shutouts from the list. I find SO to be quite random and because there are a small number of them, 2-3 extra SO in a season can make a huge point difference.

The e-mail says that categories will be set on Yahoo on Monday, Sept. 16, which is *after* keepers are due. I don't think it is wise to require people to select keepers before they know what the categories are. Further, people may want to make trades for keepers. (I know that last year I was planning to try this year, assuming that Saros would be between the pipes for Nashville. How was I to know that the old man would still be there?) It is, however, very difficult to consider trades for goalies, for example, without knowing how many categories there are going to be for goalies.

I would suggest that you make the category determination final by Friday evening at the latest if keepers are going to be due Sunday.

I agree with Toral (post 25)

Further, at the risk of muddying the water even more, I would just like to say that I am fine with whatever decisions are made even if that is no changes. The categories and rules are going to be the same for everybody regardless and I am not hell-bent to promote any of my offered suggestions. They were just my thoughts at the time.

Let me concur with Foot that no change would be fine with me. As I look at goalie rankings with and without GAA I note that 1) removing GAA increases the importance of shutouts, which are an anomalous category; 2) removing GAA increases the importance of wins and therefore being on a good team (and being a workhorse). The rankings without GAA don't look right to me

Unlike Ira, I don't think that messing with the categories is going to improve my team performance any.

Total, I think GAA and wins can have a direct correlation. Typically goalies on the best teams will have a lower GAA and in accordance, high amount of wins. I believe that taking away that linked stat gives greater importance to the good goalies on bad teams. With that being said, I'd be happy to remove the SO category as well, moreso than GAA

I’m also in favor of keeping GAA and removing SO instead. SO the most random category there is, accumulates very slowly and is near impossible to predict year to year.

Removing PIMs for Blocks I’m good with, but in the spirit of the original intent to further balance out the scoring categories (ie balancing goalie vs skater impact) I’d like to propose we just introduce Blocks, and keep PIMs as well. So we’d be at 8 Skater cats, 3 Goalie cats, vs 6/4 split before.

Correction old category split was 7/4. My proposal would leave it 8/3 in favor of skater cats.

We wanted change but could agree on change this year and we couldn't reach a consensus.
GAA's, Shutouts, PIM's and Blocks are the most debated items. I removed the rest of the items because they didn't get enough traction.

Below is the summary from your thoughts and inputs. We needed 7 votes to move on an item and we couldn't reach that milestone with 2 managers not providing input.

Goaltending categories:
Will remain as is with 4 categories counting in the points total.
GAA's was not removed. Could not reach a majority consensus.
Shutouts was not removed. Could reach majority consensus.

Skater categories:
Will remain as is with 7 categories counting in the point totals.

Some managers wanted an extra category if goalie categories stayed at 4.
Others wanted to Substitute blocks for PIM’s.
While some wanted PIMS removed and blocks added.

PermDudes – keep as is. (no response)
TommyD – keep as is. (no response)
Wolfer – Keep as is.
Cobwebs – Keep as is.
LittleM – Keep as is
Ira – Remove PIMs. Add FOW or GWG.
C.SuperFreak – Remove PIM. Add Blocks.
Filthy – Remove PIM’s. Add GWG and Blocks. 2 skater categories to be added.
Taxman – Substitute PIM’s for Blocks
Toral – Add Blocks or substituting them for PIMs. Keep categories as is.
The Dienasty – Add Blocks to neutralize the 4 goalie categories. (keep PIMs)
MailedFoot – Add Blocks or FOW, or SHP. (keep PIMS). Keep categories as is.

This was a very interesting discussion to read. I had been asking myself many of the same questions in regards to category changes in the Happy Hockey league. Due to your various insights and perspectives, we've decided to switch PIMs to BLKs, and add in Goalie Minutes Played.
- 7x4 Rotisserie: (G, A, +/-, BLK, PPP, SOG, FOW) x (W, GAA, SV%, MIN)
Thank you all for your diligence! Your debate was relatable and helpful in many ways!

Just a note: while the chart was very helpful, I noted when it was put up that I did NOT "vote for" removing PIM, if you are counting me as a "vote" to remove PIMs. As the intro to the chart said, it was a loose summary of opinions.

I recall talking about PIM's as a positive stat with Toral maybe 25 years ago. I'm all for getting rid of it--it is a negative stat and keeping it is like using higher GAA's to rank goalies.

(and with new NHL rules in place for some time about hitting, etc, there are fewer goons around, thankfully).

I recall that well. It took considerable persuasion to get you to allow it as a stat. Of course at that time there was nothing like hits or blocked shots to replace it with.

Good to see everyone back. Let's keep the Blocks & PIM discussion open for next year since there is significant interest. We can explore options throughout the season.

I've never seen a year with so many big name unsigned RFA's. It's really going to impact a few teams ability to complete. Winnipeg may struggle out of the gate.

I've posted the link to draftime in Yahoo! and I've sent out the email. So check your email for the Yahoo! message. Please login and register. Once we've done that, I'll add the keepers and set the draft order.

Taxman has offered co-manage the league and he is also set up as a co-admin of the draft. So if I'm away and help is required Taxman can be consulted.

Hopefully I can get it all done so that we can start drafting tomorrow.

I made a mistake with one of my last picks, I wanted James Reimer instead of McElhinney. If I could get it changed that would be great, just got them mixed up as I was in a rush. If it is too much trouble or against the rules , no biggie.

Thanks LittleM. Yahoo! is a big finicky when it comes to manually selecting players and putting them on teams. We'll double check the picks once the draftime draft is completed to ensure the right players are on the right teams.

Thanks Taxman for staying on top of things.

We're in the home stretch. Just a couple of rounds to go.

TommyD, Reimer added in Draftime. McElhinney is added back to available players.
I checked Yahoo! and he's on your drafted player roster.

The theme of the season is hindsight, right everybody? That's why I waited this long to make a draft rationale post (that's the ticket...) so with that in mind, here's my 2020 draft recap.

And hopefully for bonus points, a rationale for my recent trade while we're at it.

Keepers- Pastrnak, Price, Petterson, Burns for myself. 2020 Hindsight says I chose wrong on my main decision of Price vs Hellebuyck.
Tommyd, Ira, Superfreak, Little M, Cobwebs have the keepers that I like/liked the most.

I was happy about finishing 2nd last year until planning for 11th pick. We had 11 goalies kept, so I figured with 11th and 14th picks I'd be drafting the 16-20th goalie. Nearly the point where you just wait and grab a skater instead. Saw 5 goalies drafted before my first pick, so I was choosing from Varlamov, Dubnyk, Hellebuyck, Markstrom, Greiss, Kuemper, Lehner. If given the chance, I'd have been interested in choosing from Rinne, Jones, Mrazek, Hart, Grubauer as well. Came down to Landeskog, Dubnyk, Hellebuyck by the time I realized we were drafting. The all around game of Landeskog tempted me into my top pick and the state of the Jets D in the preseason scared me into Dubnyk (18th goalie) on the turnaround. Mrazek, Jones, Huberdeau, Tarasenko my fave picks from the top 2 rounds.

Really wanted to land Stone here. Just missed. I wonder what's wrong with Lehner? Domi really blossomed in Montreal, hard to ignore that while I consider grabbing a 3rd goalie so early. Nothing jumped out enough with Lehner (24th goalie) still around, I really like him as an insurance policy for a fairly shaky top 2. Should've went for Wilson. Or even Hoffman. Starting to become more of a crapshoot. Toews and Nugent-Hopkins both seem like good bets to me. Rittich would've been the really smart bet. Classic 2020. Stone, Wilson, Hoffman, Rittich as my top picks from round 3-6.

3 G, 5 C/LW, 1 RW, 1D after 10 players. Weber, Doughty, Oshie, Zuccarello stood out next to fill some D/RW spots. Meanwhile I missed out on some Nurse, Makar, Lundqvist, Kadri value. Then I went for Hischier, Coleman, Gudas, Edler, Allen, Spurgeon, Olofsson to fill out the squad. Some highlights that I liked at the end of the draft: Halak, Hughes, Crouse, Bertuzzi.

Overall I really liked what I had cooked up. Dropping Allen after about a month was dumb in hindsight, but I've had a lot of letdown from guys like Burns, Landeskog, Nugent-Hopkins, Doughty, Price, Dubnyk that has been a lot to overcome.

Seeing around half of our current top 25 goalies be drafted outside of our top 25 goalie picks, or not at all, has me hopeful that I remember to fill my offense before worrying too much about backup goalie spots in future drafts. This also has me feeling content that we kept things the same for this season. I am still interested to discuss add Blocks or swap PIM for Blocks as a minor change that had a little bit of steam previously.

Based on keepers and draft, my predicted finish: Superfreak, Ira, Little M.
Based on just over half a season it looks like Dienasty, Tax and Cobwebs.
Based on the blockbuster trade today, it looks like it's going to be Filthy (10th) and Perm Dude (12th) shake-n-baking to the front of the pack to finish ahead of Dienasty. Sorry everybody.

Trade logic: was looking around at who might use a D-man based on my overage in GP. Side goal of improving on keeper potential with a current slim pickings for my 4th spot. Maybe 3rd spot too.. Petterson, Pastrnak for sure. Price and Burns again? Uhh, more trades may be in the works if anyone's tinkering. With Burns still being a possible keeper, and Weber possibly sneaking into Burns level, that leaves Doughty/Edler/Gudas/Orlov as my main chips. Doughty being the likeliest to tempt someone. Edler/Gudas/Orlov supplying sneaky value made them very difficult to offer up. Couture just a throw in wild card in case Sharks get hot enough that he can come back and also get hot enough to sneak into keeper consideration. Unlikely. Stalock better fit for me with Dubnyk than Bernier, with Demko being close to cutting block for awhile. Bernier was playing really well and if he returns healthy could see a trade to a contender. If remaining in Detroit, he may be a rollercoaster. Super insignificant tinkering really. The main names: Monahan and Schmaltz both fit my current squads need for assists, as well as having the youth and pedigree to become potential keepers. Oshie is having a solid year but a push for assists is my current fixation. May be wishing I had his goals later on. And I may be wishing I had Doughty instead of a dud like Edler/Gudas/Orlov (hopefully not Weber/Burns in this dud category..) as the season wears on. Outside of early season +/- issues, Doughty has been a solid contributor all around and will be missed.

From Bettman:
"Our goal is to resume play as soon as it is appropriate and prudent, so that we will be able to complete the season and award the Stanley Cup."

Might not even miss any MacKinnon!

A 2-3 week pause would be 8-12 games.
Fingers crossed! Washed first...

Belated congratulations to Cobwebs!

I'm more skeptical than I was in March, but the league seems to be hopeful of starting for January. They did manage to pull off a playoffs, but time grows thin for that January goal.

We could draft during a week long training camp I guess? I'll be ready for whatever I guess?

Ready to kick things off again.

Can't imagine NHL wouldn't give everyone at least a 2-3 week heads-up before puck drop. I feel like we could bang out the draft in 7-10 days tops, assuming the troops check-in early enough.

Looks like they just re-launched fantasy hockey on Yahoo

oo must have literally just re-launched!
Had to dig archives to peek at my keeper potentials.

Article I was looking at suggested only a 1-2 week training camp period in order to fit goal of being finished before Olympics.
Just over 5 weeks til January, so I guess some form of an update must be near.
Seems they're kind of stuck making it up as they go.
Which I'm sure we can match as needed.

I suspect the Canadian team dilemma is one of the hang ups, among others. Last thing I’ve seen is they may play the whole season as one division, and only against each other, which would be crazy.

Not official but sounds like:
2020-21 NHL season will finally get underway on Jan. 13, 2021 with a shortened 56-game regular season....

An all Canadian division sounds part of the plan.
8-10 games vs each of your divisional opponents I guess? Kind of a joke, but beats nothing.

If it's a 24 team playoff again, then the joke has layers to it at least.

If it's 6 teams from each division making it to the round of 24, then only 1 Canadian team will miss the 'playoffs' again.
Top 2 seeds bye? 3-6 face each other round of 24?
Seems fun.
I really like jokes hahahah

Fourth: As Filthy mentioned, 56 game season against limited opponents. How do you even plan to draft a roster?? LOL
