Subject: Enhanced Yahoo Boxscores

  Posted by: RecycledSpinalFluid - Dude [204401122] Fri, Oct 14, 2005, 18:01

My Enhanced Boxscores were taking up too much bandwidth to successfully have hosted on a free webhost, so I decided to pull it from the web...and make it a stand-alone HTA program that runs on your machine.

The HTA (HTML Application) source is fully visible and customizable. If you download it and come up with a cool hack, you are obligated to share.

Warning, I am far from a professional coder, so if you think my coding sucks...well...join the crowd.

One thing I have seen with this current version is that it seems to only run with higher level permissions (I only run WinXP-Pro at Administrator levels, so I don't know how it reacts to other OSes and such).

Download and use at your own risk...

Enhanced Boxscore Viewer

Couple of quick notes:
  1. The columns are sartible and reverse sartible, by clicking and reclicking on the headers.
  2. If you can't figure out what the column headers are, hover over the header with your mouse. A tooltip will appear.
  3. I was also going to put a RotoGuru icon in there, but couldn't find a URL to a small enough image...and he probably doesn't need the traffic wasted anyway.

Just thought of some more stuff for it, like "Refresh" buttons for the scores only or the boxscores only.

Any and all suggestions gladly welcome...whether it gets acted upon is a whole nother issue... :)

RSF,
Since you asked... and since it's a favorite pastime of mine to send you lists of annoying suggestions... let me jot a few notes down that fall under the personal preference category that might be worthwhile implementing or not - your call.

= Could you center justify all the numerical columns?
= Could you force the decimal place in the TSN column?
= Auto-refresh? Or, since I like your suggestion of the refresh button, how about a refresh button?
= Can you reformat the player names so that they appear "last name, first init" instead of the opposite?
= Not sure how many players play PSC as opposed to TSN, but if you've got nothing else to do, could you put the TSN column first? Not sure how it appeared last year, and this is an ultra-minor deal...
= Could you show the scores of the games in the left-hand column (where the game links appear)? Especially useful in place of just "final"...
= Could you space or otherwise delimit the night's games? I find it a little difficult to read the pre-game listings given that all the channels are also listed. Am I a whiney little bitch or what?
= Can you add vertical rules at logical places in the stats box? For example, perhaps group the FG, 3P, and FT columns together, the RB and AST columns, so on and so forth? I think this improves the readability of the data and provides improved visual clues for those of us scanning the boxscores...

Ok, I admit I've always loved your boxscore viewer, and with this newest version it looks like we'll have the performance upgrade we've been waiting for. Use or toss these suggestions... no worries, and thanks for putting this great tool together.

3.) Button Done (to refresh boxscore, just click the game link.)
4.) You're on your own. Too much rework for now...

6.) Initially...it looks like a PITA, so probably not.
7.) Sorta took care of this. Get a bigger monitor... :)
8.) Done, but not to my liking. Cheated and went with : as a seperator.

To reverse the names, just use this for the "name" code:

retrieveItem = Left(strBuffer,findStrLoc)
strBuffer = Right(strBuffer, Len(strBuffer) - Len(retrieveItem))
tNamePos = InStrRev(retrieveItem, ".")
tName2 = Right (retrieveItem, Len(retrieveItem) - tNamePos)
tName2 = tName2 & ", " & Left(retrieveItem, tNamePos)
arrPlayer(1, UBound(arrPlayer, 2)) = tName2

RSF,

Gonna add one more quickish item to the list of suggestions (one that I forgot about before...)

Can you force the width of the Player Name column so that both team box score tables (on any given box score page) will line up vertically? This kinda goes along with the new improved column breaks... Again, just a suggestion for some future version...

I think we have a problem Houston. It says Mikki Moore has 16 points and LBJ has 9. That can't be right. But seriously ...

I still can't figure out the 'refresh' button. This is what I am getting.

When I open the program (using IE), it says there is 11:41 left in the CLE/NJ game. Confirmed at the Yahoo site.

- After about a 2 minutes of gametime (9:18 left), I press 'refresh' and nothing happens (but the button appears like it's being pushed).
- I click back one day, then up to the current day, and the scoreboard has refreshed to 9:18. The stats are correct.
- I click 'refresh' and the scoreboard/stats revert back to 11:41.
- Going back and forward in the date does not solve the problem at this point. I am unable to get a refresh after the initial one, and cannot get past 9:18

F5 also reverts it back to 11:41

Does any of this description make sense?

refresh button is working. and if you hit the back button and get a refresh at some point even when you click on the new score the old stats still appear.

(saying it with a tone to help work out bugs and not an unappreciative way. much love RSF, especially considering you don't play these games)

I need to amend the previous post slightly. When I hit 'refresh' the first time, it works perfectly (the scoreboard updates all pretty-like). It's when I hit 'refresh' the second time that the above process starts.

You coming up for an Ms game this year RSF? It's hard to believe it's been over 6 years since we've hoisted a beer together.

And many thanks for such a nifty tool!

A functional refresh button...really.

Figured out a way around it only loading a page one time. Just used Yahoo's URL refresh "refresh=" and increment it +1 each view, tricking it into thinking its a new URL.

RSF, the refresh button refreshes the score but doesn't refresh stats. And then I reclick on the same game and the stats don't change either.

When I close it out and reopen though I see the up to date stats.

Anything in this thread isn't taken as complaining. Just attempts to make it more useful.

RE [47], not really that far off. Thinking on adding an "auto-refresh" that you can set the duration between refreshes to. So, if 1 second between refreshes make you happy, then have at it. Can deal with this now that the manual refreshes actually work.

I made changes to match your screen capture settings as best I could, I think about 8 changes and it worked. I didn't go through them one at a time, my apologies. May have been helpful to anyone else having a similar problem. I am getting constant messages telling me my computer is now at risk from a security standpoint. (Perhaps I should play around as you suggested one setting at a time to see if this will go away) Oh well, I think I'll just lock the doors and pack it in for the night. Wonderful tool, RSF :)

On german Windows systems, there's a small "bug" because we have "," as decimal separator instead of "."
So the calulated TSNP are too big, eg. 350,00 instead of 35,00.
Adding
SetLocale("en-us")
at the beginning of the script did the job for me.
My VBA skills are very limited, so i don't know if this has any secondary effects on other systems.
But now your tool works on my local machine.

This is the message:

[Re: 75] The server that I have that page served on is a dynamic address, and it has changed. So that 68.64.51.115 address is gone (thats where the rsf.hopto.org used to point to).

I couldn't get either 17 or 18 to work last night. Similar error messages as the others. Today 18 is working, but not 17. Weird.

Was it some glitch earlier? It worked for me earlier and still works for me now.

It was weird, was looking at the scores, and all of a sudden only Cha-Nyk was left on the page. Refreshed the page couple of times, but no luck...
And No, I hadn't taken any drugs.
