I will activate the draft momentarily. The clock will not start until Thursday morning, and any picks tonight are strictly optional. You can, however, begin to set up a queue if you expect timing conflicts tomorrow.
We will start with an 6 hour clock, but if too much clock is being used, we may have to shorten it during the draft (though I doubt that will be necessary). The draft clock will continue through weekends. There will be a clock moratorium each night from 11pm until 7am Eastern time. Picks can continue to be made during the moratorium period, but the clock will be paused. Those picking at the endpoints do not get a double clock. In addition, if anyone is already in arrears for a pick when their next pick is due, they do not necessarily get a second clock period. This will be subject to Commissioner discretion.
The draft is configured for only G, F, and C. Our league does have single slot requirements for PG, SG, PF, and SF, but I did not think it was helpful to include those distinctions in the draft grid, since many players would be eligible at multiple slots and their designation would often be arbitrary. If you draft someone who is eligible for both GF or FC, just pick the one that you think is the best fit for your team. Again, this is only for the purposes of displaying the draft results.
Our roster configuration will be as follows: PG, SG, G, G PF, SF, F, F C, C Util, Util 3 bench 2 DL
Yahoo position eligibility will be used throughout the season. You are advised to check the Yahoo league site prior to selecting any player to ensure that you know that player's position eligibility at the start of the season.
You do not need to draft a completely valid roster.
Following the draft, all undrafted players will be placed on waivers, and waiver priorities will start out in inverse draft order.
You may draft a player who is not currently listed at Yahoo. If you do so, you will be assigned a placeholder player at Yahoo until the drafted player is made available, at which time you must pick up that player as a free agent (without using a waiver priority). After the 15 rounds of the draft are completed, you can no longer claim an unlisted player.
This league will have a limit of 84 games per position. Since there are 2 slots for each of G, F, C, and U, those position slots will be subject to a combined limit of 168 games.
Here are my ground rules for selecting from a queue: If you have a queue and make it available, and it is your turn to pick, I will make your pick if I'm around. Therefore, do not make (or leave) your queue available if you do not want it used.
You can specify that only the top name on your queue is to be displayed, or that the entire queue is to be shown. If you make the entire queue visible, I'll first check for any emails that might provide additional instructions.
Regardless, be aware that your queue is not visible to me or to any other designated picker until it is your turn to pick.
Please refrain from mentioning any undrafted player in this thread. You can use this thread to alert others about your availability, to request volunteers to accept a queue, to raise questions about draft rules or mechanics, to solicit trade offers or announce trades, etc.
After two rounds have been completed, I will start a separate thread for draft rationales. We will then try to keep the rationale thread on a 2 round delay. |

I'll be able to check in again on the draft @ 9:30 pm. I've left my queue available for round 2 in case we go on a serious run of picks over the next few hours, but if my pick comes up a short time before that, I'd like to pick myself tonight.

Am presently setting up my queue for my lengthy absence through Sunday evening (6pm ish return). I might be able to check in sporadically tomorrow and Saturday. Unless I chime in with special instructions at some point, just feel free to select the highest remaining player in my queue. Thanks again.
Also, Guru, I have emailed you my rationales for rounds 1-2 so that you can paste them in when needed. Hope that is okay.

Sorry to hear that, FW. I can certainly handle your queues while you're away.
To everyone: I'll be out from about 5:30pm (ET) until 11pm tonight. If you are depending on me to handle your queue, I won't be available to pick during that interval.
It is less than 6 hours, so your pick wouldn't be skipped. But the draft would stall. We're starting on a good pace, so I'm not worried about that - but it's always good etiquette to let others know when you are not going to be around, so that people don't need to keep checking in on a stuck draft.

And to Mike D: that says the man who has quietly entered two teams in RIHC: Donahue or Vonahue, very obvious indeed. There obviously needs to be a rule that only one Mike at the time is allowed to participate in RIHC.
Now the Gollum and Smeagol have set their priorities: Gollum will go out and Smeagol is staying at home to work on his attitude.

Wow, just got home and checked in online, and I hope I don't win the booby prize for the first first-round pick to get injured this year. Looks like a race between me and Guru wuth Wade and Pierce right now.

Hmm, I might be okay with that, if I can get credit for "discovering" Chris Paul at the end of round 5?
Diaw's jump from round 15 to round 3 is impressive. On the other side, I think I should be concerned as my two first picks from last year - #12 and #13 overall - were Jason Kidd and Brad Miller, which fell this year to #20 and #34 overall. Not a good indication of my drafting (or predictive) skills.

I be interested in trading up for a late fourth or early fifth round pick (depending on who is picked over the next few picks and assuming the price is reasonable). I would have ideally like to have done this yesterday (trading down my fourth round pick as I think Marbury would have been around for a least a few more picks), but I was out and realized I wouldn't have internet access again until around midnight, so I had one of my friends make the pick for me via cell phone. Unfortunately I'll be out until about 2pm, but with RSF catching up on his beauty sleep that probably won't be too long after his pick.

I will now be away from the computer until about 5:30 pm ET. I have a 2 person queue, skinneej or Guru can select the players in my absence. If one or both are gone, I can pick when I get back. This is assuming it gets to RSF/my new picks by then.

So the finalized deal is:

RSF sends to Mike D: Picks 4.12, 5.01, 6.12

It occurred to me that no one from Portland has been drafted yet, although I think every other NBA team is represented at least once by now. I ran a quick table on all five RIHC leagues that are drafting at Kafenatid, and sorted them by the earliest pick in any league:
CLE 1.01 LAL 1.02 MIN 1.02 MIA 1.03 PHO 1.03 WAS 1.04 DAL 1.05 LAC 1.06 BOS 1.09 NOR 1.09 PHI 1.09 SAS 1.09 HOU 1.10 TOR 1.10 SEA 1.11 UTA 1.11 NJN 2.01 ORL 2.02 DET 2.03 IND 2.05 DEN 2.06 ATL 2.10 MIL 2.11 SAC 2.12 CHA 3.01 CHI 3.06 GSW 3.08 MEM 3.11 NYK 4.02 POR 7.05
The earliest Jailblazer to be picked went in the mid-7th round. Protocol prevents me from disclosing his name. Looks like it will be tough to be a Blazers fan once again.

About 8 picks ago I had Jamison down as my top choice, but never really thought he would make it to me. Once he made it to one pick away, I got my hopes up - although I actually had Jamison, Butler, and [unnamed] ranked pretty tightly together. After stewing over it a bit during the morning delay, I decided that Butler was my second choice, but when I suddenly realized I was going to be late for my dentist appt, I decided to give myself an extra hour to rethink it.
CC, I hope I've been giving you some fits in the other direction. Over the years, we seem to have a history of stealing each others picks quite a bit! Even before the draft started, I knew that my position between you and Mike D was going to be a frustrating one. However, Mike D never seems to stay put.

I was wondering if we could add technical fouls to the scoring system? Just seems like it would be fun - nothing related to me having Ron Artest and Rasheed Wallace

Wow, I'm so lost at this point as to who is picking when. Umm, any of the next two guys on the clock want to swap 5/6 rounders, email me at the address here.
Sounds like a lot of people were hoping Jamison was going to be unnoticed or keep sliding for a while. This draft is always so tough that when a player I want actually does slide to me, I immediately start double-thinking it and wondering if I'm completely wrong about a guy or don't know something!

Guru - I am going to have to duck away from the computer for about an hour. I have left a queue on Kafenatid if Florian has a chance to pick in the next hour before I get back. There are currently more players in the queue after the first two, but I'd ask right now to please only use it for my 5.11 pick and not the 6.02 even if it's not emptied yet. I'll be back to a computer by 6pm west coast time and left the names in there for my own thoughts, but would prefer it not be used yet while I mull the second players and their priority order a bit more.
Thanks!

FootWedge - sorry if I jumped the gun a little on posting my next rationales and putting in a placeholder for you. I'm going to be busy tomorrow morning and wanted to get it written up in the thread tonight, since it's not going to be possible again until later on Tuesday and didn't want to hold things up too much.
I'm going to leave a short queue for overnight, in case FootWedge is on the east coast and makes his 5.12 and 6.01 picks before I wake up, so that things might be able to move on without waiting for me to wake up.

Is there any way in Kafenatid to see what the order of upcoming picks is, taking into account all the draft pick trades that have been made and processed? It's pretty tough trying to plan who you might need to take first when i can't even work out who's picking next.
Or maybe i'm just too easily confused :P Wouldn't be the first time!

Mike D's trading has apparently broken the system. Although it correctly identifies him as owning pick 6.06, it won't let Mike or me pick - instead it's prompting for 6.04, and then refusing that pick because 6.04 has already been made.
Fred (KKB) has been notified, and hopefully it will be resolved shortly. In the meantime, Mike D's 6.06 pick will be Ricky Davis, so those next in line can refine their plans.

The Euros must be either: A. disagreeing on the next pick, B. trying to work out a trade, or C. sidetracked with other priorities.
C seems pretty unlikely, though. It's pretty early for any "collusion".

Who is that imposter that made my pick? He is not the kind of player that I draft on my teams. I completely object. :)
Wow, this was probably the toughest pick I have had to make in years. I was begging someone to take him before it got to me. I passed him last round just knowing he would be gone and I would not have to worry about him. I even spent an extended lunch break mulling over what to do. Even as I was clicking the button I tried to stop it before it went through. The system even pause a little just to make me think it was going to deny my request. It would be nice to preload players into a separate queue that you never wanted to take. That way even if you're drunk or not thinking straight, you will never end up with them.

I did everything I could to talk myself out of the pick. I just couldn't get past getting that level of production, albeit probably for only 50-60 games, from an 8th rounder. Sure he kills your FT%, but if any team so far can compensate, I should be able to do it. Before the pick I had my team projected around 84% and it dropped down to around 78% with him added. Still pretty good, and if his attempts drop some this season per the trend, maybe the impact will be lessoned.
If it's any consolation, Chandler was my alternate if I chickened out on Shaq. I figured you would take whichever one was left and MikeV would have to go the PG route. I flirted with Cassell on my previous pick and considered him again, but wanted to grab a C here. Was not going to reach for one, but this seemed like a good spot to grab one of those two. I guess this could serve as part of my rationale, but I wrote out a long one before finally making the pick, so these are just coming attractions!

Hey everybody - I have to duck out to a lunch meeting for the next 3 hours (including travel time) and will be away from the computer. I've left a 3-player queue for Guru's use to keep things moving. This way at least the 9.11 pick can be made to move things on to FootWedge, and possibly 10.02 as well. If my queue is busted by the 10.02 pick I'll get to it ASAP when I get back. I'd also be willing to trade it while I'm away to Uptown for Damon Stoudamire or to anybody else for a player they drafted in rounds 1-7. You know, just to help out and keep things moving.

Uptown: Just read your draft rationale on Granger. Don't worry, he'll get the minutes. He made huge gains throughout the season last year - as a rook - and he's headed toward mini-marion status. Granger is a very versatile player who is coachable and hard-nosed on defense, as well as developing increasing confidence in his offense (with the whole team and coaching staff behind him). Indiana is short on outside shooting this year, and with J.O. and Harrington hogging the post, guess who's going to be putting up more threes from the corner?
He can play at the SF or PF and even SG in a pinch, and with all the nonsense and injuries going on with the Pacers, which so far shows no signs of diminishing this season, he looks to see upwards of 35 m/g. Since Granger is a "Jehovah's Witness" he's pretty unlikely to take weapons and drugs to strip clubs at 3 am, which should help to keep him on the floor while others spend time in the doghouse or the courtroom.
It's higly likely he'll start at SF, as Indiana looks to go small and uptempo, with a potent front court of J.O, Harrington & Granger at the 5,4, and 3 respectively. With Tinsley pushing the break, finally unshackled from Carlisle's over-controlling ways (he's promised- and also been told from on top), the new offensive approach can only help everyone's fantasy numbers.
I took him a little early by some projections in the AAA East draft (8.02) because I watched him play all last season and I could not bear the thought of sleeping too long on him and missing out this year. Considering the state of mind you were in when selecting this pick, I'd say you're going to come out a winner here. Thought you'd want to know.

Yeah, we'll see if I make it back next year. Feels like I've had a very weak draft this year. Last year I got the rotowire projections, and this year I did not. Last year, on Camby-power, until I made some lousy trades and got too busy to keep up the final month or two, I was looking to finish strong. Unfortunately, I ran out of time and energy, and a few other categories ;-)
If only I knew the other 29 teams like I know the Pacers....

I was having trouble for a few minutes getting in, but seems to be back up now. It went down right after my McDyess pick. Omen??

Nevermind, I am big in. I figured the system finally recognized my superior drafting advantage and attempted to even the playing field for the rest of you guys. ;-)

Yeah skineej, I saw you post your rationale so figured you pick and then I couldn't get in. And as to the cause of the crash, I like my theory better.

Awesome----was out for a couple hours, popped back in before going out again, and I was on the clock. AND I was able to get in. Now THAT's mojo.

I'm done for the night and since I'll probably still be asleep in the morning when the next picks are made, I've left a queue for overnight. I'll check in tomorrow morning when I wake up, but if FootWedge has already made his two picks go ahead and use the list to keep things going.

Yee haw! I've snared the two headed monster for my second center slot: Nene and Primo!
Victory is mine! Resistance is futile!

Wow. You really did punt blocks. Those two combined might equal Earl Boykin's numbers.

A punt that would make Ray Guy proud!
I got to a point when I could have gone after a shot blocker or two, potentially picked up 1-2 points in blocks, and butchered some of my other cats. I decided that if it's hopeless, don't pay up for any shot blockers.

Footwedge, if you're needing a little fodder for your 12.01 rationale, here's my contribution:
Tinsley has created a few smiles of his own with his recent play, racking up 17 assists against three turnovers in the last two preseason games, both victories.
"It's just a different approach," Tinsley said. "In the offseason, I dedicated myself to taking care of my body, hiring a chef, lifting weights and being focused and just more dedicated."
With the shift to a faster-paced offense, Tinsley's role has become even more critical because he has his hand on the throttle, and that's been evident in the preseason. In the two games he missed, the Pacers were outscored 35-28 on fast-break points and lost both. In the four games he played, they've outscored their opponents 84-33 and gone 3-1.
"Our season is really going to depend on how well we're able to keep up with Jamaal as a team and how well he runs the show," said Jermaine O'Neal. "He's a prime-time factor. The way he has approached the game this year, the way he's worked out, his mental approach, the leadership he's bringing as a point guard has been phenomenal. He's going to set the pace for us the entire year."
After missing nearly half of the regular-season games the last three seasons with a variety of injuries, Tinsley set two primary individual goals for 2006-07: to appear in at least 80 games and keep his turnovers down.
Sounds pretty good for a twelfth round pick. Now, he just has to play the games :-o

I will plan to activate the league at Yahoo tomorrow, probably around noon. At that point, all undrafted players should be on waivers. Initial waiver proprities will be in reverse draft order. Waivers should clear some time on Saturday.
If you have players who are already eligible for an injury slot, you may pick up an additional player via waivers or free agency without dropping a player. If none of your players are injury-eligible, then you must leave your 2 injury slots empty.

And we're done! Thanks everybody - the draft is always one of the most fun parts of the year. Even if it sounds like Mike D is writing taglines for bad horror movies about killer fog.

The league has been activated. You can find your players listed for 10/27 or later. Undrafted players will clear waivers after 2 days. (They are all listed as 10/29, so maybe 2.5 days)
We'll continue to use this thread for discussion until all of the missing rationales are collected. After that, I'll start a regular season discussion thread.
