Some Random Thoughts:

I have been unable to maintain a $500 roster value. Except for 12/11 (when I finished the day at $500.30), I have not been over $500 since 12/03. The lowest I have been is $483, so at least I'm somewhat steady.

Since Guru began supplying the standings (and THANKS A LOT for that Guru!), 'Freakin's Fools' has come back to the crowd a little bit. They were averaging 38.8 on 11/26, and 37.8 today (up from 37.4 last week). At the same time, their game pace has gone to -9 to -21, so he'll have to catch up like the rest of us.

I find the hardest position to fill is SF. I ended up selling Boozer and buying Caron Butler today, just so I can start catching up in GP for that position.

I'm still torn on going for a monthly prize. I still think I have a legitimate chance of talking to Goerge Gervin on the telephone ... and I'd rather do that that win a game system ... I think.

I wish that rotohog points and prices were available in the assimilator. Even though I'm not playing TSN this year, I still find the assimilator among my most hit bookmarks every day!

I feel dumber after visiting the NBASE message forum.

One of the things I like about this game ... when I played TSN, I had to look weeks in advance figuring out who I wanted to buy. Now when I look at sortable stat projections ... I have it set for 1 Day. As I grow older, my attention span runs shorter. Apparently, my ideal attention span is 1 day. :-)

And finally, I could not play this game successfully without the sortable stats provided by Guru. So THANKS AGAIN for all you do, and I should definitely re-ante my Gurupatron status again.

I made my first day trade in over 3 weeks today. I bought Andrew Bynum at 5am, and sold him when he peaked out at 5:21 am ... earning a crisp 65 cent gain. WooHoo! The last two times I day traded (also on Bynum), I earned 21 cents once , and lost over $3 the other time.

I also sold Amare, expecting him to lose more than $3 (thus covering my fees), and buying him back later today for a small profit. It ain't gonna' happen (only down $1.14). But my team is filled with F/C-type players right now, so I think I'm going to buy Nash instead.

I haven't done any day trades for quite awhile. There just isn't any assurance that an early mover will gain (or lose) enough to cover the fees, and even when the price movement is sufficient, the reward is too miniscule to waste the time and energy to track it.

My RV has generally been oscillating in the $460-$490 range, and that value seems to be sufficient to get enough quality games to keep pace, so I've been content to remain in that range. It does help that some of the most expensive players have failed to produce at the highest levels (Garnett, Kobe, and even Howard to an extent), so that none of them are "must haves" any longer. I have generally been trying to keep LeBron on the roster when he's playing, but even he seems to have lost some of his sponsorship, as he hasn't been sold out for some time. (I wonder if he will sell out with a BTB later this week?)

Hoopandhope and Freakins Fools continue to set the standard for pts/game, but they are falling behind pace, and will have to adjust from a strict cherry-picking strategy at some point. I know that hoopandhope (tothreeball) has a RV in the high $400s (because he's said so), but my suspicion is that Freakins Fools might be lagging a bit.

I notice that Species has had a tough run lately, getting only 9 GP in the past 4 days, although averaging almost 40. By comparison, hoopandhope had 18 GP over that same 4-day span, averaging over 41.5, and Freakins Fools averaged 42.7 for 13 GP. As I recall, Species had a tough stretch in the middle of RH baseball as well, but obviously recovered well. And the NBA season has only reached about the 40% mark, so we're still 2.5 weeks away from the midpoint.

I'll update the summary table of pts/game tomorrow.

Guru, I was going to post yesterday on the NBASE game, but got sidetracked. Your assessment of my team and its strategy are correct. My RV has run in the same $460 - $490 range, although its been closer to the floor than the ceiling lately (currently $467). Given the aforementioned performance of some of the games highest valued players, and the decent production from players in the $40 - $60 range, over the past week, I've moved to get a few cheaper players in the lineup and reduce the games behind. So far it hasn't limited my production, my fall off mid week can be credited to several of the "name" players underperforming.

Given no games on Christmas Eve and New Years, which takes 8-9 games out, I would have cut into the pace issue and will over the next couple of weeks, as I hope to get 35 games a week in. For the first time in a while I have no players on my bench as "investments". For me day trading has more or less stopped, and I'm trying to field a strong 6-7 player lineup. Unlike Tosh who has held his lineup, I've had to move a lot of players, finding B-B opportunities trying to get quality games in and cut into the games behind. Still targeting players who I expect will produce 35+ for any given game, hoping for 40. With just over 40% of the schedule complete, lots can happen.

To tell the truth,
I've been hoovering between $490 and 505 lately.
It's just to hard to stay above $500, 2 trades and that's a $10.00 loss.
I'm trying to make sure my roster stays in the mid 490's so I don't have to buy / sell a player at the $2.50 fee.
But even yesterday,
when I decided that I would take the hit on CP3
and then pick up a player, it didn't quite work out. Because my other players gained and cancelled out my losses, so I still had to bite the $2.50 fee.
I'm still trying to hold onto good performing players, and pick up the hot player as I go along.
SG seems to be my weak spot.

The one thing that I've noticed is that there are still a lot of managers going for the money, rather than the points.
Today Manu is over $5.00, and you know most of those buyers are going to sell before gametime or be forced to hold him tomorrow. Yet Duncan is down over $2.00 right now.

Guru, thanks for posting the PPG updates. I suspect your denominator in your PPG calcuations is off (I think by 4 games). Maybe it has been calculated off yesterdays pace or by the actual NBA games played pace, which is 4 games behind the Rotohog Pace. My actual PPG is .5 lower than is shown in your summary. This may address Addicted's above comment.

You are correct. I mixed up my pace numbers with RotoHog's, which caused all GP numbers to be understated by 4 games. By my calculation, "on-pace" should be 299 games played through Jan 7, but RotoHog is basing their numbers on 303.

So, here are the revised averages. Through 1/7/08, there are 45 teams in the top 100 overall and the top 100 in each celebrity league that are averaging at least 32.5 points/game.

The good news is that from a real games played perspective, I'm only 19 games behind pace. I didn't even have to work to make up the 4 games.

My slumping RV has taken a huge surge today, I suspect many are experiencing the same.

My RV took a huge hit today. I slept thru the first snooze alarm, and didn't log-on until 2 minutes after the market opening.

My sells -
Tim Duncan - lost $2.92 in 2 minutes
Marcus Camby - lost $3.24 in 2 minutes
Carmelo Anthony - lost $1.44 in 2 minutes

As for the buys -
Dwight Howard - up $2.16 in 2 minutes
Jason Kidd - up $2.57 in 2 minutes

That extra push of the snooze alarm cost me $12.33. I was going to buy Tinsley (as an investment) with that money, but can't anymore. Grrr.

I'm really having a hard time grasping the concept of this game.

I picked up some players for yesterday:
Mo Williams
Dwight
Kidd
Gerald
Hedo

So far this morning, they have all lost money. And all made money yesterday. Under the premise that they wouldn't have made money yesterday, the only way they could lose money today is if they were bought yesterday, but not used.... am I right?

I know they could have previously been on rosters, used yesterday and dropped today. but that doesn't tie in totally with the fact they increased in value yesterday.

So, what am I missing?

I've noticed people buy in a day early for some of the popular players heading into a back to back situation and then sell after the first game. The losses of those players today likely mirrors the gains they made Monday. I guess its a trade off between RV and games played. Likely a RV building/maintaing strategy employed by those filling 9 roster spots daily. I imagine as those that are 200+ games ahead of pace run out of games, this phenomenon will lessen.

I know what you mean Dave.
What looks to be happening is that some managers are buying early heading into a back-2-back, and selling on the 2nd day of the B2B.

"Early" might go as far back as week, sometimes.
Other's are buying when it fits their roster (moneywise). So you drop Camby and pickup Dwight/Bynum.

I'm playing for points, but sometimes you have to pick up the volatile players for their performance, and let the money take care of itself.

As a plausible explanation, take Kidd, for example. He gained $1.73 on Monday, and then $6.46 yesterday. Today, he's lost a little over $1 so far. There were certainly enough buyers from Monday who could have produced that size of loss today, even if all of yesterday's buyers started him last night. Perhaps some of the early buyers are moving to Paul today, or a Phoenix player (for BTB starting tonight), or Calderon for today's gains. In addition, I suspect some of yesterday's buyers may have speculated (bought but not used) in order to protect the gains.

Another example - Dwight Howard. He gained more than $2 in the two days before yesterday, and then $3.87 yesterday. So again, there were clearly some teams who could have used him yesterday and sold today - perhaps banking the gains and moving to Amare. And his drop today isn't very large relative to his prior gains.

Players always tend to rise in price a bit in advance of obvious schedule opportunities. So the best financial results will be attained if you can buy players early. However, that makes it very hard to maximize points/game and games played, so it's not a very effective comperhensive strategy for optimal point generation. But there are times when you might decide to do it.

I had Bynum last night, but bought him on Sunday, anticipating that he might have a big run-up on Tuesday that I would want to protect on Wednesday. If he had put up a big game last night, I might have held, but when he had only 22.93, I decided to move him this morning for Paul. There aren't many players that I would dump on a game day, but Bynum experiences exaggerated price movements, and he's certainly not one of the "must have" players for points, even though he's been pretty respectable lately. And tomorrow will probably be an even bigger selloff for Bynum, before the pendulum starts swinging back.

Ordinarily, swapping from a Bynum game into a Chris Paul game would seem like a positive point move. But it didn't work out that way last night.

At least I didn't swap him into Baron Davis!

I sold Bynum, bought Paul as well yesterday. I'm not sure how many still are holding Paul, he didn't make much money so there weren't a lot of buys yesterday, after a pretty big selloff on Monday. He'd be a nice differentiation pick if that is the case.

Dave R,
I took a big $ hit this morning.
I went from over $505, to $491 right now.
I could've sold Kidd and LBJ today, but didn't like my options for today and tomorrow.
(Should've picked up Dwight)

If I had sold I'd be out at least $8.00 (5 for the sells, and $3 for the buys). So I might have gained money this way, and might regret it tomorrow if Kidd "pulls a Baron Davis".
Guru,
I held Bynum, of course I already had Chris Paul.

If your looking for money and points next week,
take a look at Joe Smith.

I dipped below $450 briefly this morning. It used to be that trading to maximize games would generally at least break even, with holding period gains sufficient to offset trading fees. But lately, it seems that players are appreciating much more on the day before a back-to-back, and then selling off on the second game day. This is making it more difficult to preserve value while maximizing gains.

At least I bailed on Kidd at today's opening. That's a melt-down of Bynum-ian proportions!

I also bailed on Kidd and got nicked for $.40 from his closing price yesterday, which wasn't too bad. My team value has also dropped down to below $450, but so far I've been able to gain on pace and maintain my ppg average. The trend to selling strong performing players after the first day on a back to back leads me to believe many are trying to build team value and then take a run at monthly prizes the following month if they feel they have no chance at the overall.

How's this for brilliant managing. My roster Tuesday includes Nash, Al Jefferson and a stash of cash. I have already picked Marion over Amare for the Phoenix back to backs to fill some forward spots. I want Camby and Kaman from Nash and my spare cash, and decide I'll swap Jefferson to Caron Butler as well. I trade Nash and Jefferson for Camby and Butler and since Kaman had sat out the day before, decide to wait to make sure Kaman's playing before I buy him. In the meantime my team value with Tuesday's transactions has crept to a couple of dollars below $450 and I have about a $.30 cushion to buy Kaman. Before I know it, Ginobili and Duncan who are already on my roster climb about $7-8 and all of a sudden I'm facing an extra $.50 on my transaction fee and I can't afford Kaman. I miss Kaman's 53, trade Jefferson's 48 for Butler's 11, and watch Amare outpoint Marion by 50 over the back to back. Gotta love this game.

My team value is now below 400. I pretty much have no pc access from 7-10 eastern time during the week.
While I do enjoy this game I think the format is flawed unless they institute a sell ahead feature for people who can't be at their pc at certain times of the day. This is why I quit baseball, it is far to inconvenient to play this game.

I Agree. Trying to be at the computer at 7 eastern regularly is very difficult. I have resorted to holding players longer and not buying players that would have to sell early on certain days.

They need to have an market order system for the first trade(s) in the morning like they do at regular stock exchanges so one can put orders in ahead of time.

To be sure trades go through a possible cash reserve could be required for each submitted buy/sell combos or Buy to cover the price initially set on opening based on number of buys and sells. The first trade of the day price would be determined after the opening orders done.

Hoopandhope (tothreeball) is now clearly the team to beat. He's almost caught me in total points with 10 games in hand.

Freakin's Fools has been taking some more speculative players (e.g., Varejao) lately in an obvious attempt to get closer to pace. It hasn't worked particularly well for him. At this juncture, I consider him to be in a virtual dead heat with me. If he can make up his 16 games (vs. my pace) at an average of 20 while holding the rest of his average on a 37+ pace, then we are essentially tied.

For the past 7 days only:

Hoopandhope
31 games, 37.4 avg

Freakin's Fools
38 games, 32 ppg

We Are Borg
26 games, 35.8 ppg

It may come down to team value to buy additional players to make up games. It may be harder to gain much value if trying to hold for b to b as many seem to be selling on second game--ie Duncan today. The fewer games to make up may allow for keeping team value and average up.

Thank you for heaping expectation onto my team. A month ago I was concerned over pace, but over the past 30 days my ppg average has increased, and I've made 10 games up on pace. On the season, there are 14 players averaging over 35 ppg, over the past 30 days, there are 24. That has increased the options and brought down the cost of fielding a roster capable of beating 35 ppg.

Regarding Twolves observation on Duncan, there seems to be 1 or 2 players a day that make the price run starting the day before their back to back. If you need to preserve team value, selling after the first game of a back to back is the plan. Today there are a number of decent players you could play back to back that likely won't materially hurt your team value (Bosh, Butler (DNP notwithstanding), Jefferson, Wade, Jamison, Baron) Calderon is one that falls into the early sell model. I'm not sure it will keep managers from keeping pace. I guess we'll see over the next few weeks.

Does anyone have a firm grasp on what the game pace should be at this point?

There are 162 game days (8 days during season w/o games). That works out to 4.55 games per day. Yesterday was the 89th game day of the season ... so we should be at 405 games.

I'm at 383 games, so I should be -22 in GP. But NBASE shows me at -16. And when I add up the individual positions, NBASE shows me at -14.

When you add the individual position gaps, rounding creates problems.

Rotohog is accruing the game pace at roughly 4.5 games per day. If you base it on the actual schedule, it currently works out to be very similar - 399 on one basis, 398 on the other.

Thanks. It's a product of rounding the numbers ...

4.5 games/day * 89 game days = 400.5 game pace

4.55 games/day * 89 game days = 405.45 game pace

I was showing -30 GP on 1/1, and now show -16. I had $486 on 1/1, and am now down to $445. Hopefully the next 14 games I catch up don't cost me another $40!

Interesting on the money front today. Both Deron Williams and Yao, two of the biggest money makers over the past two days and both heading into back to back games today, are at the same price today they started at. I guess with so few games yesterday, everyone bought them ahead of time. I imagine there will be a sell off after tonights game even though they are playing tomorrow. I'll be curious to watch their prices tomorrow. I own both, and regardless of $$$ will hold them for both games (barring injury or horrid performance).

I just made a slight adjustment to the table I posted this morning. It appears that if a team is ahead of pace, the reported overage is relative to 469 GP, but if a team is behind pace, the comparison is relative to 468. Probably something to do with the way numbers are rounded.

In any avent, based on actual GP to date, the "true" pace number at this point is 467.4, so RotoHog's more simplistic number is pretty good at this point, regardless of the rounding.

If LeBron can stay sold out throughout the break, he could end up priced in the 120s by the time play resumes.

Having picked up 4 players (Wade, Marion, Nash, Dirk) and started them on Thursday, I was limited in cash today (+/- $150). I've picked up 4 players I thought might make some dollars as opposed to Lebron plus one other. LBJ will make $2 plus per day sold out. I'll likely move my 4 players tomorrow morning and skip Lebron for a day as there should be many players on the rise i can grab for $115 total. Hopefully after an active trading day tomorrow, I'll move a few money makers for Lebron and end up ahead money wise ... or not.

Hoping I can keep the pace for the second half of the season. Guru, you are 16 games ahead of me in pace, definitely an advantage, should be an interesting finish. As you have pointed out earlier, Freakin's team has stretched lately due to low RV, and negative pace. Won't count anyone out within 2 ppg, although those close to "We are Borg" on PPG, are also behind in pace, so it may be a tough climb.

It looks like the Rotohog pace numbers are going to continue to march on during the All Star break. Teams dropped 4 games vs pace yesterday, so I guess we'll all drop another 13-14 games over the next 3 days.

On a relative basis (i.e., relative to other teams) it makes no difference. But if teams are using that as an absolute guideline, it's going to lose a lot of meaning over the short term.

The trading over the ASB was a bit different than I expected. I had 5 players in my lineup on Thursday, and have sold all and replaced them with 6 different players for tonight. In the end my team value is about the same as it was at the end of Thursday. A little dissapointing but acceptable given that I missed the opening of trading on Friday with a computer problem that probably cost me about $5-6.

Was anyone able to make any material roster value gains through the break?

Players I picked up 2-14 -> 2-16.
And I was late on 2-16.

Gasol - $3.35
James - $8.95
A.Miller - $2.45
Ginobili - $0.19
Calderon - <$0.32>

So a little gain, but considering that I've dropped around $40.00 in the last 2 weeks, it's time I made some money.

I did make some money over the break, but so much of it was on LeBron that it was rather counterproductive.

It pushed my total value enough over $450 that transactions are now consistently costing me $1.50, but as long as I want to hold LBJ, the extra value is all tied up, so it doesn't help me improve the rest of my team.

Looking at Lebron's price ($124.74). He has been sold out most of the morning, yet doesn't seem to be getting the usual price bumps. I wonder if their is a price ceiling "dampening" effect in play.

It's possible, although his current offered price is $125.19, which doesn't sound like a level at which he would be maxed out.

[49] Based on my analysis, I'm pretty comfortably ahead of Freakin's Fools at this point, as he's not likely to be able to catch up in games while maintaining his high average.

However, I think tothreeball has a pretty secure lead over me at this point.

Too bad second place doesn't get me anything.

52 - If either of us finish first, aside from the bragging rights, the prizes pale by comparison to the Rotohog Football and Baseball games.

On pricing, Deron's sold out price bumped up $.12 at 1pm, Lebron also sold out remained at the same price. Interesting. I'm not 100% sure, but I imagine Lebron's price approaching $125 is uncharted territory. Were there any similar price scenarios for the top players in either football or baseball?

In baseball, the cap was $90. Arod spent a good bit of the season at that level. Pujols got there briefly at one time, but then pulled back. I don't recall that any other player got there.

In football, I never noticed any evidence of a top price.

It's possible that $125 was set as the max for Hoops, although if so, I don't know why LeBron currently sits at $125.19. But his price does seem to be stuck.

This morning at market opening I sold 3 players to purchase LeBron. By the time I got to the purchase page for LBJ (not more than 15 seconds), he was sold out. I timed the first market freeze correctly and was able to purchase him. When I went back to my roster, he was sold out again.

Perhaps we hit that 12-team threshold where another LBJ was added to the player pool. I was able to purchase him, thus raising his price 19 cents? Just a thought.

I didn't play baseball last season, and after following along with the threads, I'm sorry I didn't because it sounded like fun. But if there is a 5am market opening like in hoops ... I will not be playing in 2008. It's way to hard to get up that early with regularity. Sometimes when the alarm goes off again at 7:15, I don't even remember if I woke up earlier! I'm still getting up at 5am four times per week typically.

And for the record, it's only 1 spreadsheet. And an alarm clock set for 7:55 am every day. That's about it. I made a mistake trying to make up games earlier in the season that I doubt I'll be able to overcome. Good luck to everyone!

Belated congrats to tothreeball for a dominating season. Your average of 36.5 per game bested me by a half point - which may not sound like much, but over the course of the season, that was a 330 point margin. Your lead looked pretty secure to me for the last 2 months or more - which at least means I didn't have to sweat the details during the endgame, as it was apparent that my #2 ranking was all but solidified - in both directions.

Too bad the prizes weren't better. At least you won something. It's not often that I finish #2 in a contest like this and get squadoosh for it. But I knew that all along, so it's not like it was a surprise.

[toot horn]So, after three RotoHog sports, I managed a top ten finish in each: baseball #7, football #10, hoops #2. Does that make me the the most versatile rotohogger?[/toot horn]

Unfortunately, the way baseball is going (and the way it is currently structured), I suspect my "reign of terror" will come to an end.
