Subject: RIHC 2009-10: Injury Slot (IS) Designations

  Posted by: Guru - [330592710] Fri, Oct 23, 2009, 09:29

This is the fifth year we will be using the Injury Slot for the RIHC league, and I believe that all of the QLs are using that rule as well.

Here are the RIHC rules:

Three bench slots are available to hold any player. Two additional bench slots will be enabled, but are restricted as “injury slots”, hereafter abbreviated as “IS”.

An NBA player shall be eligible to fill an IS if he is listed in any “informed” source as being injured more seriously than “day-to-day”. Examples of acceptable information sources include (but are not limited to):
RotoWire
RotoWorld
RotoTimes
ESPN
NBA.com
Newspaper stories (citing facts, not speculation).

Once a player appears in an NBA game, he is no longer eligible to fill an IS, even if a published source fails to remove his listing. When a player is no longer IS eligible, the team shall have a limited amount of time to remove that player from the IS, as defined below.

If a manager wishes to move a player into an IS but cannot find a confirming source, he may request that the Commissioner approve the designation. The Commissioner shall use his best judgment in making such a determination.

If any manager believes that another team has improperly moved a player into an IS, he may file a protest with the Commissioner. If any manager disagrees with a Commissioner ruling, he may request a league vote. Six votes shall be required to overturn any Commissioner ruling related to an IS.

Each Wednesday, the Commissioner (or his designee) shall review all rosters to assure that any filled injury slots are appropriate. In the event that an IS is improperly filled, the Commissioner will notify the manager of the violation via the email link at the Yahoo site. The notified manager will have 48 hours to correct the roster or to provide a satisfactory explanation. If a breach remains uncorrected 48 hours after notice, the Commissioner shall have the authority to drop a bench player in order to bring the roster into conformance. The player dropped will be based upon the Commissioner’s judgment as to the best interests of the impacted team.

The Commissioner shall have the latitude to extend the time for curing a breach if he knows that the manager is unreachable and/or unavailable to make the adjustment.

No player which is in an IS slot may be placed in a starting slot on any day unless the bench has been cleared of that injury slot, or unless another player is eligible to replace that player in the vacated IS. In the event of a violation, the Commissioner may elect to void any stats generated by improperly activated player.

As before, no player may be picked up as a free agent and immediately placed in an IS. Free agent additions are only IS eligible 10 days after pickup, unless the player has appeared in an NBA game after the pickup and the IS eligibility occurred thereafter.

This thread will serve as a central clearinghouse for IS-eligible players, to be used as follows:
  1. Whenever a manager in any RIHC-related league decides to declare a player injured and eligible for an IS slot, they must first check this thread to see whether that player has already been declared as IS-eligible.
  2. If that player has not yet been listed, then that manager must post a message declaring the player's status, and providing justification, with a link to a confirming source, if possible.
  3. At that time, any member of any league may post a challenge to that declaration if they wish. If more than one challenge is submitted, then the RIHC Commissioners will post a decision.
  4. If a player is persistently listed as day-to-day, that player may be placed on IS once he has missed five consecutive games.
  5. If an IS declaration has been made for a player and has not been challenged, then any other manager with that player may accord that player IS status as well, without needing to post. In other words, only one (the first) manager needs to post that declaration.
  6. When a player returns to action and is no longer eligible, someone (the original manager, a Commish, or any other manager) should post a courtesy note to that effect.

Commissioners will still need to perform a weekly review of their respective leagues to monitor compliance. If the Commissioner wishes, he may delegate this duty to another league member.

Some drafted players are already eligible for an Injury slot. Off the top of my head, this list includes:

Raja Bell
Mike Dunleavy
Francisco Garcia
Robin Lopez
Kevin Love
Tracy McGracy
Leon Powe
Brandan Wright
Yao Ming

Note that suspensions do NOT qualify for an injury slot.

Looks like Wesley thinks so. ;)

Tough call on him. Jackson says Gasol may play Saturday. So assuming he's eligible now, which looks like a fence sitter, if he plays Saturday the question is moot.

I have Iverson in a pretty similar situation, but Hollins says the timetable for him to return is Monday. I figured I wouldn't bother trying to pick anyone up for that short period. I "think" I could though. So I guess Gasol fits into that same logic.

Nate Robinson could miss up to two weeks due to an ankle sprain he suffered during Saturday's game.
Lil' Him left the arena on crutches today, and is expected to have his ankle X-rayed today or tomorrow. With Robinson out, Larry Hughes and Toney Douglas will split time as backup guards.

All the news I can find on Nate lists him as out tonight, and "could" be out for longer (a week or more). I take this as our classic day-to-day situation and thus ineligble.

Pau Gasol appears to have a tear in his hamstring, and is not expected to play on the Lakers' two-game road trip to Oklahoma City and Houston this week.
A sonogram showed a possible tear in his right hamstring and he underwent a more a more complex MRI exam on Monday. Those results should be in on Tuesday, but for now, don't even think about using Gasol this week. That should also mean that Lamar Odom will be in line for more solid games, just like the near triple-double he posted on Sunday.

DJ not that it really matters, but I think yes. At this point he is not technically day to day because he is definitely out past his next game (since he won't even be traveling with the team on their upcoming road trip). I watched some of the Lakers game last night and his injury situation was addressed by the announcers. Basically the jist of it was that the Lakers have come out and said they are in no hurry to get him back on the court, because they are more concerned with his long term prognosis than with any short term gain by having him return early. My impression was that his absence might be more accurately measured in weeks instead of days.

I believe though you certainly may 'request' a ruling on his eligiblity prior to considering him IS eligible, you have the right to announce your intention to consider him as such along with your documentation/rationale - and any RIHC manager or commish may subsequently challenge your declaration, and ultimately a ruling will then be made to either uphold or overturn your use of an IS slot for him. It's certainly admirable to ask for permission first, imo, for a questionable situation.

Regarding Nate Robinson from Newsday:

Ankle sprain sidelines Nate

Sunday November 1, 2009 6:25 PM By Alan Hahn

Mike D'Antoni said today at practice that Nate Robinson's right ankle sprain, which he suffered during the fourth quarter of Saturday's overtime loss to the 76ers, will keep him out of Monday's game against Chris Paul and the New Orleans Hornets.

D'Antoni also said the Knicks may be without their 5-9 energizer for 10 to 14 days.

In my opinion since Robinson was declared out of today's game yesterday and is expected to be out somewhere in the range of 10-14 days, Robinson is more than just day-to-day.

And the previous article from the New York Daily News that I posted stated he left the arena on crutches so there is no chance of him playing in the next day or two (ie. is not day-to-day).

skinneej seems to feel Robinson is day-to-day.

I picked up Dampier to replace Robinson, so if Guru or the other teams in the RIHC feel I have improperly declared Robinson for an injury slot, I won't play Dampier until it is cleared up. Please let me know so I can decide whether to play Dampier.

Another update on Robinson:

Nate Robinson-G- Knicks Nov. 2 - 11:22 pm et

X-rays on Nate Robinson's ankle came back negative, but he is still expected to miss up to two weeks.
Robinson was still using crutches during an interview on Monday, but said that he's slowly improving. Larry Hughes figures to have considerably more opportunities in his absence, and it will be interesting to see how they co-exist when Nate gets back.

Species, honestly I was thinking the same thing last night! Ha! He's one of those guys that will tempt you each year with picking him up, yet are always dissapointed when u do!

Was not trying to get things stirred up, just wanted to jog my memory how we have handled this type situation the last few years. Is being declared "out" for at least one game the defining factor, or knowingly missing multiple consecutive games? The language used in the previous injury reports was what was in question. Saying a player might or could miss time is subjective on the reporter's view, but not an official declaration as being out IMO.

Anyway, I think in Nate's case the latest news is more definitive so he is likely good to reserve. Also wanted to establish for my league the practice of waiting for confirmation before picking up players prematurely. FWIW, I've played games in the past when on crutches during the day, just wrapped my ankle tightly and found a way to convince my coach I was good to go! ;)

Robinson seems OK for IS, although you should not ask for (or wait for) a ruling. If you think you have the facts to support an IS declaration, post and act accordingly. It is then the obligation of anyone else to challenge that declaration.

I would not consider being declared "out" for one game as sufficient. Remember, the original official NBA injury designation required that a player sit for at least five games. We have not used that definition here because it is often very difficult to assess that based on publicly available information. But I would think that a player should be expected to miss multiple games. And, of course, if a day-to-day player eventually misses 5 games from an injury, then he is automatically eligible, regardless of the prognosis at the time.

After he's already missed 4 games, and with this news, I think it's time to place Hamilton on IS:

From Rotowire....via the ESPN league front page....

Hamilton (ankle) is doubtful for the Pistons next two games, Mlive.com reports.

Spin: The Pistons kick off a two-game road trip Wednesday in Toronto. Wednesday's game is followed by an off day and a tilt in Orlando on Friday. Coach John Kuester would like to see Rip return to practice before seeing game action, and the Pistons next practice won't be until Saturday. Keep Rip on your bench for now, but he could return next week if Saturday's practice goes well.

Warriors center Biedrins out at least two weeks

By Mark J. Miller

Don't try this at home. A right groin and abdominal inflammation will apparently keep Warriors center Andris Biedrins(notes) out of the lineup for at least two weeks, according to Contra Costa Times.

The center for the 2-4 Warriors has actually got something called Osteitis Pubis. What is that? Oh, just an inflammation of the muscles that attach his right groin and abdominal muscles. Youch.

Biedrins will get another evaluation on Nov 23 so he'll get to miss a five-game road trip.

Paul Pierce has an infection in his right knee that required a medical procedure Wednesday. He has no structural damage, but is expected to be sidelined for about two weeks.

Pierce started experiencing discomfort in his knee after Tuesday's game against the Pacers, and team owner Wyc Grousbeck said the knee required draining, but not surgery. Still, Pierce will definitely miss the team's upcoming four-game road trip, and at this point, Jan. 6 looks like the most likely date for his return. Tony Allen should benefit most from Pierce's absence, but all other Celtics players will need to step up their production as well.

Injured Orlando Magic shooting guard Vince Carter did not participate in the team’s shootaround today in Sacramento and won’t play in tonight’s game with the Kings.

That means J.J. Redick will get another start at the 2.

Stan Van Gundy said he will use the same starting lineup that trounced the Atlanta Hawks 113-81 on Saturday night – Jameer Nelson, Redick, Matt Barnes, Rashard Lewis and Dwight Howard.

The Magic don’t expect to have Carter available until the end of their current four-game road trip.

Carter, who injured his shoulder last Friday in a game in Washington, will not play tonight against the Sacramento Kings.

“I would hope by the end of the trip, ” Van Gundy said after Tuesday’s shootaround. “There has been some improvement. He said he can raise his (left) arm up but not across his body.”

Rotowire:

Maggette's hamstring injury will keep him out through the end of Golden State's upcoming road trip, CSN Bay Area's Matt Steinmetz reports. He's not expected to play again until March 11.

Recommendation: In other words, Maggette is out for the next eight games.

Rotowire:

Thompson will miss up to two weeks due to his back injury, according to the Associated Press. X-rays revealed two fractures in his lower back. It would be best for the Kings to let him heal fully, because lingering back issues for big men aren't good for anybody.

I guess he'll replace Wade on the IL when he does come back.

The Bulls are shutting down Joakim Noah for three weeks due to the plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

I'm taking T. Chandler off IS and putting Noah on IS.

from Rotoworld:
Monta Ellis won't join the Warriors on their road trip after an MRI revealed a lower back strain.

This news rules Ellis out for the next five games, leading us to believe this is much more serious than a simple sore back.

Kenyon Martin-F- Nuggets Mar. 9 - 11:07 am et

Kenyon Martin (left knee) plans to return this season, but perhaps not until the playoffs.
K-Mart will miss an undetermined amount of time while undergoing platelet rich plasma therapy. His presence is absolutely vital for Denver's playoff success so hopefully he can bounce back -- fantasy owners should probably move on.
