It's time to begin organizing the qualifying leagues for the RotoGuru Invitational Hoops Challenge.

Last year, we had 2 AAA leagues and one AA leagues, each with 12 managers. I would like to have the same configuration this year, but given the late start of the NBA, I don’t know if we will be able to fill all of the slots. Consequently, I want to start with a generic sign-up process for the first week to gauge the level of interest, after which we will establish the targeted number of leagues (and the sizes of each).

AAA league slots are typically open only for those who have qualified by playing in the RIHC or a qualifying league last season. There are 24 slots to fill. I believe that the following guidelines form the best qualifications for filling those slots:

1. RIHC managers not invited to the RIHC this year (7)
2. AAA managers ranked 4th-8th (10)
3. AA managers ranked 2nd-8th (7)

This list includes 24 managers, but there will probably be a few who decline to participate this year. If so, the remaining slots should be filled by anyone who has played in a QL before, first come, first served.

The following 24 managers are pre-qualified for a AAA league, assuming that we continue to have two AAA leagues with 12 teams each:

Last year, the QLs were commished by Wolfer, Wonderboy, and CJ. All three have tentatively agreed to commish again this year. Based on last year’s results, CJ and Wonderboy would be the AAA commissioners, and Wolfer would commish the AA league.

Please use this thread to indicate your interest in joining a league. If you are on the AAA pre-qualified list, please indicate that as well (and identify the team name from that list if it differs from your posting name.) Finally, you must provide your email address. Once league are formed, we’ll need to be able to reach you quickly. IF you do not provide an email address, or if you do not respond to your email when leagues are being formed, you may be dropped from your league.

After we get a sense of the number of interested managers, I’ll decide on the final league parameters and we’ll figure out how to allocate names to teams.

For those who may be unfamiliar with the RIHC framework, here are the basics:

Roster Positions (12/3/2): PG, SG, G, G, PF, SF, F, F, C, C, Util, Util, BN, BN, BN, DL, DL
Stat Categories (8): FG%, FT%, 3PTM, PTS, REB, AST, ST, BLK
Max games per position: 84 (this will need to be adjusted for 2011-12)
Roster moves: Daily

Leagues are hosted at either Yahoo or ESPN – commissioner’s choice. There is no cost to participate.

Prior to the draft, we hold a one-round process to select draft order. If time is not available, the draft order may be selected by random draw. (It’s quite likely that this will be the case the the QLs this year.) The order will snake; even rounds will be in the reverse order of odd rounds.

The draft is a “slow” online draft, hosted at draftime.com. Your commissioner will provide registration info prior to the draft. The draft typically takes about 8-9 days to complete. You should typically expect to make 2-3 picks per day. You may set up queues for each pick in advance if you expect your availability to be limited. If you have no queue, you pick will be skipped if you do not make it within the specified time limit. The time limit is typically around 4 hours, and this will be set by your commissioner based on the timing needs of the draft. Shorter limits may be imposed, especially for managers who are chronically slow to act.

Note that the use of queues is particularly important if you access to draftime.com is blocked at your office. Please check this out in advance, and plan accordingly.

Draftime is the successor to kafenatid. Same basic system, with many enhancements, which were first implemented for baseball last spring..

Took a year off last yr from RIHC but would be up for it this year. Would prefer AAA if available but would also take an AA spot. If wolfer would prefer to play AAA over commishing AA I would commish AA if needed. Should be fun!

We're doing very well.

There are only six people on the AAA list who have yet to respond. I just sent an email to each of them, asking them to respond ASAP.

Looks like we'll be able to fill all three leagues. Hopefully, we can get the actual league assignments established by the weekend.

We currently have 23 of the 24 AAA spots filled, awaiting only to hear from Chuckball. If he does not appear, I'll move someone up. (I haven't yet figured out who.)

We have 15 people expressing interest in AA. With 12 slots in a standard league, that's too many for one league, and too few to break into 2 leagues. It would be nice to have enough extra players to fill a second AA league. Any takers?

As of this morning, we have 39 people indicating interest in RIHC qualifying leagues.

I could try to set up 4 leagues with 10 managers each (recruiting one more), but I think there is a significant difference between a 10 person and 12 person league in terms of NBA player depth, and I'd like to have 12 managers in at least the AAA leagues.

If we allocate 36 to two AAA leagues and one AA league, that leaves 3 extra managers. We can continue to try to recruit additional managers to fill a second AA league, although we are considerably short. Meanwhile, if we have any managers who pull out, those three are the waiting list for now.

I have assigned 24 managers to the two AAA leagues. Of the original list of AAA qualifiers, 2 have declined (Species and Mike D), and Chuckball has not responded. Those spots are filled by Wonderboy (who will commish one of the leagues), KnicksFan, (who was AAA eligible last year but got passed by due to a travel issue), and Wiggs (who was the top AAA finisher from last year not already included.)

The first 12 responders for AA leagues will make up that league. The last three to respond - Kyle, maspero, and stramonio - with be the waiting list, or the start of a second AA league, if we have ample additional managers sign up this week.

I believe that the two AAA commissioners- Wonderboy and CJ - both prefer Yahoo. Since there is no difference in hosting platform between these two leagues, it's simplest (and fastest) to assign managers to each league. So, here are the two AAA leagues:

If so, maspero may want to join the second league, since his friend stramonio would be in it.

If that's the case, we could put someone else in wolfer's extra slot.

I'll keep it open for another day, and then start filling the second league.

Damoose, as of now, you would be the commish. Do you prefer Yahoo or ESPN?

we like to talk about fantasy and to give suggestions to each other, playing in the same format, but in separate leagues ...
i guess it sounds a little strange ... but that's the way we'd like. if it is not possible, we will with no problem play in the same league.
