Let's get this going. Check in here.
Tosh's earlier post:
So ... what's the status here?
I personally lost a bunch of enthusiasm for the NBA after the lockout last season. I honestly did not care if they played or not.
Once they agreed to play, Gurupie20 had a terrible time getting started. It was way too close to XMas, and the regular Commish's were unable to get things organized. It was only the Greatness of the Guru himself that we started on time. Thanks again for that Guru!
So here we go ... 1. Who are the Commissioners? 2. Is everyone returning? 3. What is the keeper deadline? (Currently set for Noon on Tuesday 10/16) 4. When does the draft start? (Currently set for Noon on Thursday 10/18) 5. When are we processing the lottery? 6. Are we drafting at drafttime again?
FYI - Five teams have announced their keepers at the website.
More questions as I think of them ... |

I'm back, PD, and I'm not a commish :-)
I've identified my keepers on the website, but in the past we also did so on a dedicated thread. A week before the scheduled draft is probably a good time to check in, PD. Thanks for doing so.
Last year I used my first round pick on Bismack Biyombo...a raw rookie with lots of upside. Charlotte brought him along slowly as he had much to adjust to in the NBA game. As I understand it now, he is slotted to start at C for the Bobcats and should see a nice leap in a number of areas, including minutes. I think he averaged 1.8 blocks a game last year as rook. If you're interested in making him part of your squad, he's available for a pick upgrade.

Biyombo is a very good sleeper pick. I thought you picked him too early last year PR, but if you had the room to stash him he'll probably pay you some dividends this year. A double-double season, plus about 2 blocks /game, isn't out of the question.

Thanks PD. I probably did pick him too early. I was on the clock without a lot of time and he had just been inked to a deal IIRC and I pounced. Still, I already had a solid six keepers so I was hoping to nab a player I could turn into a nice trade at some point, beit picks or to upgrade my keepers. It's about time to execute that plan. All offers considered, don't be shy. I'd also package Ginobili and Biyombo for a younger guard if anyone is interested in that.

I am back. Yes, Commishes are me and Ref, with Guru more of a backup.
I see us using Draftime again. I'll look to get that set up this weekend.
Those draft dates probably will need to be pushed back.
I will endeavor to get a draft grid going lottery primed and Draftime started over the weekend.
PS - I have Tristan Thompson and Jonas Valanciunas as recent very high draft picks with upside available.

I think Guru has to "renew" the draft on Draftime. I've dropped him an email to do so. I've also asked him to run the lottery. Here is what the draft order will be, excluding the lottery and trades:
1. RSF 2. dpr 3. Pete N 4. Species 5. Frick 6. Dave R 7. Ref 8. KnicksFan 9. Pacers Rule 10.coldwater coyotes 11.Vampire Weekend 12.Tosh 13.youngroman 14.Great One 15.skinneej 16.Pacers Rule 17.Guru 18.PermDude 19.Meatwads 20.bmd

You should have made a lower offer on 29 year old Mo Williams who would get you similar production of a Tony Parker at a fraction of the cost. ESPN - Mo Williams' last season (2010-11) as a full-time starting point guard, he averaged 15.8 points, 5.3 assists and 2.3 3s.

- Draft is open in Draftime with no clock. Teams may pick at any time. They may also wait. Clock starts Friday morning. - Teams are responsible to pick up their own players in ESPN. Commissioners will try to help, but may be delayed. - Obviously, sometimes a manager will neglect to pick up a player. ESPN's free agent listing is a helpful guide.....but ultimately Draftime is the place of record for who is available to draft. - A player must be in the ESPN database to be eligible, however.......so please check ESPN before pulling the trigger on Draftime.
Thanks. Let's have a great draft. Good luck to all.

Although the add was done after the last regular season game, the waiver claim (by RSF) was probably placed beforehand.

Regarding #83, that seems like a very grey area at best for the pickup. I remember dropping him the 2nd to last day thinking he'd be a potential trading chip in the offseason but shrugged it off because I needed as many games played as possible on the final day of the season. If I knew we could pickup guys after the final game was played, then I would've put a waiver claim on him. I'm sure others would've done the same as well.

It was my understanding a couple years ago that rosters were frozen at the end of the season. I didn't understand this since trades happened before the draft and even keepers were declared the following fall, but still I thought that was the rule, even if just for clarity's sake coming into the new season. But what do I know- I'm not an original manager. A decision should be made before the draft proceeds, however, if the pickup is not allowed. It's not a big deal to me, but I can see beastiemiked's point.

I'll make it easy for you. Drop him. Fück it. I put the claim in pretty much the second he was dropped, but it did, in fact, process the night of the last games (after the games completed). Definitely effects how I looked at the offseason. Whatever.

My 6th keeper is Ben Gordon...which was acquired after the waiver wires were processed, after the last game of the season.
The deal is RSF 4.01 for Ben Gordon and Tosh 4.12.
Assuming this doesn't get challenged too, since it was a deal after keepers were declared...

I don't see the problem. The claim was made before the last games--seems fine to me. BMD dropped him in order to squeeze an extra GP out of his roster, but with waiver rules the claim wasn't immediately processed. A loophole? Maybe. The way to fix that is to prevent players from being dropped a day or so before the end of the season so that any claims are processed before the last games.
But that's not really the problem we're trying to fix. Claims made before the last games, even if processed afterwards, seem absolutely fine.

Timing is a little weird, but if it wasn't questioned by now, I think it must be allowed. We had a lot of months to see that transaction right on the home page.
If the transaction is dis-allowed, RSF & I have agreed to a trade where I am sending him one of my non-keepers. A similar trade was on the table for the same player with another manager earlier but it didn't work out.

I don't have a problem with the pick-up, since the transaction was initiated prior to the end of the season. If waivers are processed at midnight, were all of the west coast games completed prior to that?
My first thought was that we should close the potential loophole, but it seems similar to MLB's after the trade dead line trades, that I don't have a problem with it.

If I was commish, and I am not so take it with a grain of salt, here is how I would rule: all rosters are locked for the season on the last freeze of the season. Any waivers that are run after that time are reversed. Furthermore, trades of non keepers were locked at noon yesterday so the Gordon deal isn't an option either. I would allow him to select anyone else who was on his team prior to keeper deadline so long as they haven't already been drafted. The constitution was on the league page when I left. We have the same rule in football and baseball. We have an old copy of hoops on our league web page. I can link that when I get to a computer.

I considered trading with dpr to go down and pick 4th. I didn't think that anyone would pick Lillard in the top 3. Finally, I decided that it wasn't worth the risk as I really like him and think he will make an immediate impact on my team. After I picked, dpr emailed me and said I'd have been very unhappy had I traded because that's who he was trying to trade up to get. WHEW!!! I had never even heard of him before I started researching a few days ago.

RE: 104 I don't think bmd really has the definitive say as he cut ties with Williams. This is a league issue. We have several precedents in our three leagues where this has happened and we have reversed it. The problem is that the commish did not realize what happened and no one pointed it out to him until now. I still submit that RSF needs to pick 6 guys from his roster from the freeze at the end of last ssn and 11:59 am ET yesterday. That would rule out a post Freeze pickup of Williams and a post deadline trade of Gordon (since he no longer belonged to Tosh either). This whole situation stinks.

I think if we didnt leave RSF either Gordon or Williams that would be pretty unfair. If the precedent is that moves like the williams pickup arent allowed then that should have been handled at the time, not immediately following the keeper deadline after which he has no chance to add a keeper as he would have done had the issue been handled in a timely manner.

It's not a huge deal with me but annoying that I traded for him and dropped him assuming nobody would be able to pick him up before season end. Makes it even worse that the team I traded for him with was the team that picked him up.
I really wish RSF would've spoke up before I did and said something. A simple "hey I picked up Lou Williams on waivers after last freeze, can I keep him?" Partially my fault for not catching it but I just assumed he wouldn't have been eligible to be picked up by a team.
That said, I'm down with whatever the commishes decide as long as it doesn't screw RSF out of Lou or his would be trade if they decide that he shouldn't keep Lou..

106: well we know RSF's position so assumed bmd is the only party involved.
It comes down to this: Species has to rule in the best interest of the league. He realizes that the pooch was screwed by not realizing this in time. It is obvious what bmd was doing so no one could pick-up and keep Williams. Also allowing a trade after the keeper deadline is a non-starter.
So we have these options imm: 1. Do what I would have done based on the rules and precedents where we have reversed this. But allow him to go back and keep someone on his team pre-keepers. 2. Species says, may I screwed up by not noticing this in time. In the future all moves will be reversed forthwith and because this wasn't brought up until now, I am going to allow him to keep him--even though by rule he shouldn't have been able to. 3. Simply remove Williams and keep him at 5 Keepers.
By a strict adhering to the rules, you go with 3, but I think that is totally unfair to RSF and the league gains no disadvantage at all by allowing him to go back and keep a player who was on his team. However, I think RSF can make a case for #2 because of the timliness even though it breaks precedent and our rules.

I agree with dpr in post 107. And with the #2 option in post 109. The Commish's should have caught this at the conclusion of last season. Waiting until after the keeper deadline and the start of the draft is too late to retro-actively make changes.

The two most important facts are:
1-Technically the pickup is against the rules 2-It is my job to catch that and nip it in the butt at the time
It's not bmd's fault this didn't come up until now and he is in the right to have brought it up. The strategy of releasing a possible keeper-quality player that couldn't be legally picked up is a good one. I should have caught it.
All of that said, I feel that the fairest ruling is to allow the retention of Williams and move on. RSF could have considered a myriad of trading options during the offseason and preseason and would be denied that if we followed the ltter of the rules.
Call me Bud Selig calling the All Star game a tie.....but I think this ruling creates the least shock waves to the league.
I also propose to clarify the rules (which I don't think necessarily need clarification)..........but basically it would say that ALL roster moves must be COMPLETED - including waiver claims - by the first roster freeze time on the last day of the regular season.
I'm sorry that I missed it.

I think the question is who made the error by not correcting the Williams move. The commish by not enforcing it at the time or RSF for making the add. If the commish can retroactively change a move 6 months later (I am sure the precedent calls for much swifter action) then we can retroactively allow a trade 12 hrs later and after 1 pick has been made.
I am not blaming the commish(es) for not acting quicker, there was little reason to check the league page at that point and it easily understandable how it was missed.

113: I think it says that in G24 football.
111: Species and I have been talking via email and while no solution is perfect, the one he made stinks the least I think.
110: I don't nec. agree that it is too late, but feels a little slimy. Heck this whole situation feels that way though.
112: Absolutely disagree on extending the keeper deadline retroactively. For instance, there were SEVERAL managers I was in talks with about adding another keeper via trade but not all could get back to me in time for the keeper deadline. I'd imagine there were others in the same boat. Bottom line is that we have to make a decision on our keepers by that time and we lose our non-keepers. As I stated before, this is a complete non-starter.
Anyhow, now that RSF was allowed to keep Williams, I'm hoping that he goes ahead and drafts now since he's up. I am going to be gone a lot coming up and would like to get as close to my pick as I can before trying to come up with queues.

I'm ok with dropping Williams if Gordon is my keeper. It took me 6 minutes from when I saw bmd's post (work and night classes delayed me) to make a deal for Gordon, which would have happened if Williams wasn't allowed to be picked up via the standard waiver wire process (not free agent pickup). Was it a gray-area...absolutely, but it was a transaction initiated before all games were complete.

FWIW, when we posted both keepers and non-keepers in the keeper thread, it made it more obvious that we were giving up our rights to the players we weren't keeping as of the keeper deadline, including our rights to deal them after the deadline. Seems we've had some would-be trades in the past that didn't quite get finalized by the trade deadline and they ended up not being allowed even though they were within minutes of being posted by the deadline.
I agree it would be helpful to have the official rules posted somewhere. It's easy for misunderstandings or various interpretations to occur or just plain forgetting.
Lest you say being commish is a thankless job Greg...Thanks!

PeterN - I thought about Kidd a few picks in front of you and in fact was weighing him versus Courtney Lee when the computer auto-picked Lee for me. My primary hesitation was worries about playing time with NY's crowded backcourt. Nice Pick (hopefully).

Thank you, it was nice draft with you all.
Had to wrap it up with a homer pick of Meyers Lynyrd, despite probably 50 better picks available.

re [140] would it also be up for discussion the GP limit? 90 per slot seems quite high and requires a lot of lineup manipulation. In fact, as active as I am, I'm not sure I've ever been able to reach the GP limits in the years I've been with the league. And inevitably, I always end up with a few stud games lost to sitting the bench b/c I had to move them out of the active lineup on days they weren't playing to try to increase GP and forgot to move them back into the active roster before their next game.
With 8 extra games to insert in each position, that's almost a full extra starter's worth of games to come up with. That doesn't account for lost games due to injury or what have you, and we usually have maybe 10 per position a year for that (?), which makes almost another full starter's worth across all positions.
I know the league is already set up on ESPN, and it may be too late to change it for this year, esp. with one manager already done with the draft, but I'd almost prefer an extra utility slot, one less bench slot, and only needing to play 82 games per position to minimize the need for roster substitution - except when you do have an injury or to play the hot hand.

Thanks PR. Low risk with it being my last pick in the draft. Kidd keeps defying the odds. I think he'll get enough playing time to make it a solid pick.

Man Brooks looked good in limited minutes versus the Lakers last night. I was considering him with my last pick also, but then I also remembered it was Steve Nash defending him...and not only that, but Steve Nash with a bad wheel! Still he was in my queue for the fifth round, so he may well have not been there had you not snatched him up.

Frick I notice you only have one Pacer on your roster. Ref and I both got our homer picks in. My homer led the Pacers in plus/minus tonight. Also, Mahinmi seems better than I thought he would be. He reminds me of Antonio Davis in terms of his physique but seems a little more athletic.

Its funny that at this stage of the draft, you can still have your top three queued players picked off. Aminu, Amir and Camby all in order ha! Settled for Cole so maybe he can get some nice action if Chalmers is slow to recover.

Thanks, RSF. I always feel all my homer picks are great picks though. Isn't that a general rule about homer picks?
Any time you can get a player you feel will contribute at pick 216 you have to feel good about that, and I do think he will contribute this year.
If we are staying at 90 games per position, however, I might have to dump Harrington for a player that can contribute at least a rebound a game while he's out.

Two years ago, at the conclusion of the draft ... I (using Commish powers) reset the draft to keeper status, and manually re-entered all the players. That gave us correct rosters, players all on waivers, and a correct waiver order. I seem to remember it being a fairly painless process.
Last year was just a free-for-all because it was so close to XMas.
I think it is up to Species how he wants this to operate. Time to speak up man!! But no one should pick up any players until this is decided.
There has also been discussion about the GP limit. We should get that figured out. 90 games per position, or 720 games total??

You are correct Ref. It was always by position. ESPN did not have that option in our first year at that site, so we went to 720.
ESPN re-added thae 'by position' option last season, so we went back to the original rules.

At first I didn't like the non-position specific total of 720. BUT I came around on it -- especially in such a deep league it gave me more options with players and free agents as I wasn't tied to filling in extra games with some crappy backup C or something like that.
I think a good compromise of too many games (90 per is a lot and difficult to get to) and specific spots might be to pull the 720 down to an even 700 which chops a few games off per spot and is easy to remember.

Pretty sure last year we decided on totaling the games played and not separating per position.
I'm always in favor of lowering games played. You get completely screwed in this league if you have 1-2 guys go down for extended time. Plus, it's almost impossible to hold a young guy that isn't getting significant minutes unless you are already out of it.
I think we should vote for next year on it since changing it this year might hurt some teams strategies.
Should games played be lowered? If yes, I think we should give 2 options. Down to 86 or down to 82 per position.

I'm currently without power, and some of my files (including those for G20 dues) are not currently available. But I know that there are still some people who have not yet anted up for this season.
I've copied the email below, since I know that some of you have trouble receiving email directly from ESPN.From the G20 Hoops Treasurer:
Prize pool dues for 2012-13 will again be $15. Your payment is due by the end of October. If you do not pay by then, I reserve the right to hound you privately and ridicule you publicly!
Two members have permanently opted out of the prize pool: Perm Dude and Pistol Pete. There is no trophy pool assessment this year, as the trophy fund is already adequate for this year.
The other 18 returning managers are in the pool, and expected to contribute each year.
The following 8 members already have sufficient funds on account – either from last year, or from G20 baseball - to pay the full amount, and therefore owe nothing this year: Beastiemiked Meatwads Guru Pacers Rule Skinneej Ref Tosh Species
The following two managers have $10 on account, and so only owe $5 for this season:
Coldwater Coyotes KnicksFan
Everyone else owes the full $15.
You may send your payment in one of two ways: 1. Mail a check for $15 to this address: [send me an email at davehall@rotoguru2.com for the address] The check should be payable to Dave Hall.
2. Paypal Send to davehall@rotoguru2.com. Designate your payment as Personal-Payment owed. If you include a note, just say G20 payment.
I have received checks from Vampire Weekend and Coldwater.
I have received paypal payments from GO and youngroman.
I think that leaves six people still to pay.

On a side note, it looks like beastie miked is on pace to go back-to-back. If anyone has a guard that has more than 1.5 3PM per game and shoots above 80% from the line (with enough attempts per game to have an impact), I'd be interested in discussing a trade. I have a bunch of forwards and centers.
