Subject: RIHC 2014-15: Draft Rationales

  Posted by: Guru - [330592710] Fri, Oct 17, 2014, 15:08

This thread will contain all of the individual pick rationales for the 2014 RIHC draft. RIHC managers should supply those rationales in the Rationale Collection thread. You will not be able to post directly into this thread.

I expect that this thread will be updated daily.

1.01 James, Lebron - CLE - SF
draft pick #1: this is the 2nd league in a row where I had the 1st choice of picking my draft slot. I was not so happy with my decision in RIFC and it seems that the same is happening here.I took the #1 because there is one player that is ahead of t"he others: Kevin Durant. unfortunately he was injured after a selected the #1 pick, luckily ge was injured before I used this pick. With the knowledge of an injured Durant I would have taken a lower pick.

What is not to like about Lebron? he wa"s MVP in 4 of the last 6 seasons, was 2nd once and 3rd once. he is back in Cleveland and will continue to do what he does best: shoot, rebound, steal and distribute the ball. basically everything that counts in this league.

1.03 Curry, Stephen - GSW - SG
I had high hopes of Anthony Davis or at "worst" Lebron here but the Durant injury changed everything.

All that being said it is hard to be unhappy with Curry. It seems he is slowly escaping his injury reputation. If healthy I'm expecting huge numbers in points and threes to go with exceptional percentages. The ideal guard to build a fantasy team around.

1.04 Harden, James - HOU - SF
Pick 4: I think there is a definite top 5, and beyond that it becomes harder to predict, so I wanted to be as close to the top as I could.

The choice here came down to Chris Paul or James Harden, but I honestly didn't consider Paul. I really like Harden's huge scoring and he's a major plus in FT% since he gets to the line so frequently. He can give me 6 assists per game which is great because it puts less pressure on selecting a point guard with high assists. I expect his stats to improve a little this year since Chandler Parsons is out of the picture.

1.05 Paul, Chris - LAC - PG
Chris Paul should continue as one of the top PGs in fantasy this season. Last season, he averaged 19.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 10.7 assists, 2.5 steals, and 1.3 three-pointers in 35 mpg, and there's no reason to expect less. The only issue is injuries, missing 12 & 20 games the past two seasons. But he was able to use that time to make funny commercials for State Farm® Insurance. That should be an RIHC category.

I don’t believe that the drop off with him playing in Cleveland and Lebron James will change his fantasy value that much. He’s still a monster!

1.07 Westbrook, Russell - OKC - PG
Westbrook's numbers last season were in line with his career averages, and he put them up in under 31 mpg as his minutes were shortened when he worked his way back from injury. Westbrook is set to have a career year now with Durant missing the beginning of the season and I'm excited to see what he will do as the top dog.

1.09 Ibaka, Serge - OKC - C
I got stuck with pick #9. I’m OK with that, though. I’ve drafted from this vicinity many times before, and as I recall, the RIHC has had more league champs drafting from the #9 slot than from any other – at least as of a few years ago.

So in my pre-draft planning, I had planned to take Kevin Love here. Oops.

With Love gone, my choice comes down to Cousins or Ibaka. Cousins is generally ranked marginally higher, but I got burned with him as a 1st round pick (as pick #9, no less) two years ago. I finished dead last that year, and Cousins was a key component of the meltdown. I’d rather avoid taking a knucklehead with my 1st round pick. Fool me once, shame on you…

Ibaka returns from last season’s squad (and I also had him in 2011-12), so he seems to gravitate to me. He should probably be ranked a few slots lower, but he will not make it back to me in round 2, so it’s now or never. He’ll probably lead the league in blocks (or be close to it) while putting up solid contributions in several other cats, including the shooting %s. Last year, he ranked #9 overall in the ESPN player rater, and when you can get prodigious blocks without stretching, that locks it for me. (BTW, Cousins was only ranked #18 last season.)

The only other player I pondered was Durant. I thought he offered fair value here based on a 10-week outage, but didn’t want to take the risk.

1.10 Wall, John - WAS - PG
I took the 10th pick for no apparent reason, but I only had slots 7-10 to choose from. I had it in my mind I might like Wall with my first pick and felt I had a reasonable chance at 10.

I'm a PG sort of guy, and felt that after Curry, Westbrook and Paul, that Wall was the next best at that position.

What's not to like about Wall, especially his age and the fact he has improved every year since coming into the league. Any injury concerns from his earlier years seem behind him and at 24, he is poised to build on last years terrific season, when he lead the league in assists.

John contributes in all cat's, even burying 1.3 treys per game last year. To say the least, I'm expecting big things this year.

1.11 Cousins, Demarcus - SAC - C
Pick 11: Didn't really have much of a choice but knew I wanted to target Cousins and felt this was the latest I could possibly get him. Plus I prefer drafting towards the end of the draft if I can't get one of the top picks.. you get to see who will fall to you.

Cousins: He's ready to be the leader of the Kings. I think he really turned the corner last year and expect a guaranteed double/double with good defensive stats and close to .500 FG%.

Wanted Boogie Cousins, but again a pick to short.
Remind me next year to position myself two picks earlier. And mock draft two picks later.
Big Al came on strong in the second half of last year. Hope he stays healthy and gives me 20 and 10 with 1 block.
Was hoping that Durant did fall here, so that made both picks troublesome. But in the end, I couldn't pull the trigger

2.02 Griffin, Blake - LAC - C
I had considered Lillard and Griffin here. I was mildly concerned by Lillard's foot sprain which ultimately made the difference. While Lillard will probably be fine (afterall he's yet to miss a game) I don't want to roll the dice too much with these early picks. Griffin is a bonafide stud who improved his FT immensely last season. If Griffin can make another modest FT improvement to around ~.750 and continue rocking big double doubles I'll be happy enough. Also what gets somewhat overlooked are his assists (3.9 APG), pretty good for a big man.

2.03 Drummond, Andre - DET - C
Pick 15 was maybe a tad early for Andre, but I'm banking on a breakout season. This monster in the paint is only 20 years old, and averaged over 13 points and boards last year. Throw in over 1.2 steal and 1.5 block per game. Can we say dominating?

I realize I've probably torpedoed FT%, although last year he only took 4 per game, but with the predicted increased involvement in the offense that may increase. On the other hand his 62% FG last year will boost that category for me.

Go Andre

2.04 Durant, Kevin - OKC - SF
Wow. I did not expect Durant to be available here. If nothing else, I figured Dave R would snatch him in round 2.

Last year, Durant was at 21.31 on the ESPN player rater, based on total stats. If I factor that down to 50 games instead of 81, that works out to 13.15 – but that assumes that I leave him in the starting lineup while injured. If I add back 30 games from someone ranked around #150 (rating = ~2), then I get a composite rating of something around 14. Last season, that would have ranked #6 overall.

Of course, there is risk. While 50 GP assumes he is out until the beginning of January (which is longer than the consensus projection), there is no assurance that he’ll be playing at such a high level for awhile upon his return. But I do think that he complements Ibaka well (on my team and his team!), particularly providing scoring and treys.

No guts, no glory! If he is out until February (or gets injured again), then this season is probably a bust. But my primary backup choice here was Kawhi Leonard, who wasn’t without risk (probably a stretch at this pick) either, so I think this makes sense.

2.06 Lillard, Damian - POR - PG
I didn't have the intention of selecting another PG after taking Westbrook in round 1, but I have Lillard as the best remaining and the 2nd round would be too early to stray from taking the best player available. One of my favorite stats of his is that he has yet to miss a game in his 2 year NBA career. Now with 2 PGs on my roster, I'll surely be going big(ger) in round 3.

2.08 Bosh, Chris - MIA - C
As part of the 3-headed monster in Miami, Bosh's stats suffered the most from his earlier career stats in Toronto, when he was the man. Now that LeBron left Miami, Bosh could once again return to his glory years. He contributes in all categories. I was deciding between Bosh & Paul Millsap for this pick. I ended up taking Millsap 9 picks later.

Since this is a 2-center league, I'm glad we went with Yahoo instead of ESPN. Yahoo is a little more generous with the C-eligibility

2.09 Batum, Nicolas - POR - SF
I was hoping to get Batum's teammate, Mr. Lillard, but he was taken a few picks earlier. Batum is a positive contributor in all categories except scoring, but with James Harden in the first round I can afford to have a low scoring SF. Like Harden, Batum is very good at assists and FT% for his position, so my team is setting up well in those fields.

There isn't much not to like about Dirk's fantasy game. Good production in points,3's and boards with elite percentages. Just like any other older player health is a concern.

I would have taken Batum here but he went right before my pick. It may end up being a blessing, time will tell.

2.12 Gasol, Marc - MEM - C
The value of Kevin Durant is unknown after his surgery. I only knew that I would not take him at #1 and that he should be gone at #24. he went at #16. I don't know how high I would have reached for him. It all depends on how many games he will play and in how many of them he will be as good as last year, because it may take a few games to get back on track. I valued him conservatively and would have taken him at around #20.

Back to my draft:
if you pick at the turn you usually pick one big man and one smaller man, so that your team stays balanced. This is especially true in the early rounds. I started with Lebron who may fall into both categories, so the logical thing to do would be to take a PF/C and PG with this turn. looking at the available players there were 2 centers left that get above average stats in unusual categories: assists, steals and to some degree even FT%. They are Marc Gasol and Joakim Noah. Because of this I felt that I can take both of them here and will dig myself out of the 3pt-hole later.

Gasol is bound to be a leader in Memphis and is expected to do it all, except shooting threes. his games played pattern is 82-69-81-65-80-59. this means that he will play 79 games this year. I take it.

3.01 Noah, Joakim - CHI - C
Noah is similar to Gasol. similar assists, steals, blocks. more rebounds with less points. the only thing that worries me about him is that he had offseason surgery. because of that there are some injury concerns or that he may sit a few games during the season. I can only hope that he stays healthy and gets the same number of games as Gasol: 79.

3.04 Dragic, Goran - PHO - PG
It was time for a point guard, and in this next tier there were 2 or 3 other guys that I was considering. I am concerned that the Phoenix backcourt is getting crowded and Dragic's numbers will suffer. He averaged 20 ppg last season and that will likely drop down to 16-18. Even at that scoring level, he is a big help in FG%, steals, and 3s. His assists aren't elite but that's okay because I already have Batum and Harden. He gets to the line a lot, so I am crossing my fingers that he can nudge his FT% closer to 80%. most importantly, he is a pretty durable player and I don't want to take any chances on a health risk at this point.

3.05 Millsap, Paul - ATL - PF
I considered taking Millsap at pick 2.08, so was surprised to see him still available at this slot. He's small for the PF position, but he's adding 3s to his repertoire so now he has no obvious weaknesses to his game. Millsap was the only player in basketball to average at least 1.0 3PT, 1.5 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game last season. If he can average 18/9 this season, I got a bargain at this pick.

Horford got off to a great start last year by averaging career highs in points, blocks & FG% (and 3s, technically) before suffering his season ending injury. He returns late first/ early second round value if healthy, and he is looking and feeling good so far, so I feel okay taking this chance.

3.09 Thompson, Klay - GSW - SG
My short list for this pick was Millsap and Thompson, When Millsap disappeared a few picks ago, my choice was simple.

Klay is 24, entering his 4th NBA season. One of the league’s top 3-point shooters (last yr ranked 2nd in 3PM and 9th in 3P%). I’m hoping this is his breakout year, scoring 20ppg with 3.5 treys, 1+ steals, and a half block. If he could learn how to get to the FT line more, he could solidify that % cat as well.

Klay is one played I’ve been eyeing in this draft, and although it is possible he would slide to round #4, I thought this was the time to lock him up.

Rudy Gay was most likely my backup choice.

3.10 Ellis, Monta - DAL - SG
Monta has been one of my favorite players for a while. True, he doesn't notch as many 3's as I'd like from his position, but he's a prolific scorer, and has been very durable throughout his career.

Ellis should contribute around 19 ppg, 4 boards, 5+ assists, and over 100 steals for the season. Being eligible at both G positions is a plus.

I also strongly gave consideration to Kobe here as I think he's in for a big bounce back year but opted to go with the younger legs. Gay fills up the stat sheet with decent ratios. He also shot a career high .482 FG% in his 55 games with SAC and has been able to stay relatively healthy throughout his career. Looks like a safe solid third round pick.

3.12 Bryant, Kobe - LAL - SG
True story, Friday morning I was watching a recast of the LA / Utah game and watched Kobe miss two free throws in a row twice, and yet I still drafted him.

Kobe's been hurt twice over the last year and doesn't have much of a team around him anymore, but given the recent feud with ESPN, I still expect him to play at or near the level that he played before the injury. If I get 18 pts, 4 reb, 3 ast, 1 steal and 1 3pt, I'll be happy.

4.01 Hayward, Gordon - UTA - SF
I thought about another PG, or a PF here, but I decided to go with my gut and take Hayward. Hayward is the type of fantasy player that we all love, as he gives you stats across the board, last year he averaged 15/5/5 with 1 stl and 1 3pt. Those numbers are similar to Nicolas Batum whose getting drafted about 15 picks earlier. So I'll take it as a value pick. If he can produce similar numbers this year and improve on his FG%, I got a bargain.

4.02 Walker, Kemba - CHA - PG
I strongly considered D-Rose here as I am a big Bulls fan but just couldn't bring myself to take the gamble. I really needed a PG here to bring up some of my weaker cats of assists, 3s, and steals. Kemba looked like the safest PG option here. I also feel like I can absorb his crappy FG% as my other three guys shoot at a high clip. I really like Guru's pick of D-Jordan in this round, looks like he's all but guaranteed a 12 in blocks with Ibaka and Jordan.

4.03 Bledsoe, Eric - PHO - SG
I give DeAndre Jordan a long hard look here, but coupled with Drummond meant I would without question be punting FT%. In retrospect I wish I had gone that route, since it seems my FT% is destined to be at or near the bottom.

But I opted to take another G, Eric Bledsoe. Bledsoe is an injury risk, having played only half a season last year. But he did come back from knee surgery, and seems OK, maybe his injuries are behind him.

When healthy Eric is one of the best guards in the league, able to contribute in all categories, even a block on average every other game.

If he stays on the court I'll be very happy with this pick

This may be a crazy pick since I already have Ibaka. But he stands atop my rankings, and was ranked #26 last year in the ESPN player rater, in spite of his woeful FT%. This is pick 40, so that sounds like good value. Don’t drive the lane on my team or you should expect to have you shot swatted away!

I was actually hoping that Rudy Gay would still be available here, but that plan went out the window a half-dozen picks ago. So I’ll go with DeAndre for now, and sort out the team's statistical anomalies as we proceed.

Similar to my 3rd round pick in Horford, Vucevic also suffered a season ending injury last year which is likely causing him to drop a bit in drafts. But also, like Horford, he is looking solid and healthy in the preseason. Vucevic will provide typically good big man stats you want from an early round pick, and a repeat of last year's 76.6% from the foul line would be lovely.

4.09 Favors, Derrick - UTA - PF
Favors is a young big man with huge upside. He is an excellent shot blocker, shoots a high percentage, and rebounds well. Last season he only played 30 minutes per game, so if he can stay on the court for another 6 minutes per game I think he can give me 17 points, 11 rebounds, 2 blocks per game. Best of all, he has dual C/PF eligibility.

I strongly considered Dwight Howard here but I just couldn't bring myself to tank the FT category.

4.12 Williams, Deron - BKN - PG
After I went big with my first 3 picks I at least wanted one PG here. for the 2nd pick I looked for another big man and only found Vucevic to still be available. seems that going big early paid off for me.

the field of PG's I though about was: Deron, Rose, Jrue, Rubio and Wade. in that order. turned out that 4 of 5 survived the 7 picks before me. since 6 of these picks were for F/C, Vucevic was one of them. so I was left without a proper big man, which means I can pick a 2nd player of the 4 that surived.

The biggest issue with Deron Williams is probably his health. he averaged "only" 68 games over the last 6 seasons. He also had surgery in the offseason and according to him he feels better than he has the last 2 years. Even if he only plays these 68 games he is probably worth to be picked at 4.12. if he exceeds this mark every additional game is a bonus for my team.

5.01 Holiday, Jrue - NOR - PG
Jrue also had injury issues last season but looks as good as before in preseason. when he plays he is capable to be a top 5 point guard. compared to a lot of other available PG's his bonus is the FG% which comes at the expense of less 3's. I hope I can pick up the missing 3's later in the draft.

5.04 Parsons, Chandler - DAL - PF
I thought Parsons was the best player available at this point in the draft. He is a big help across multiple categories, and is an especially big plus in assists and 3s from the forward positions. I think his role in Dallas will be bigger than it was in Houston, and Dirk is no spring chicken, so I expect Parsons to improve a little from last season.

5.05 Young, Thaddeus - MIN - PF
I'm getting frustrated with my odd picks. So far, I have gone on the clock at 6:55am, 6:50am, and 5:07am. I've gone to bed each night 5-7 picks away, then when I log-on in the morning ... I've got a short clock and rush to basically pick the guy on top of my queue. That's what happened with Thaddeus. Sure, I can turn on the auto-pick, but then I don't get the adrenaline rush of drafting a player.

But I'm not frustrated with getting Thaddeus Young. He's another under-sized PF, and won't be putting up Kevin Love #s (who he is replacing in MIN), but he'll be expected to serve a major role on offense. His %s are his main weakness, but they aren't horrible at all.

5.09 Ariza, Trevor - HOU - SF
Bah! Was hoping for Oladipo here. Close, but no cigar.

Ariza is entering his 11th season, but still only age 29. He’s coming off what was arguably his career year, knocking down 2.3 treys per game, and stealing 1.6. Not a strong FG%, but at this point, I have that cat well anchored. Ariza moves to Houston, where he scored a new contract and replaces Chandler Parsons.

Arguably, the time to get a player is before his career year, not after it, especially when there is a team change. But this is pick #57, and Ariza ranked #30 in last years ESPN player rater, so it’s not like I’m paying up for a full repeat. It would be nice if he could pick up his scoring a bit, but at this point, you don’t get everything in one player, and I think Ariza’s cat profile fits my needs well.

Solid swingman whose stats have improved in each of his seasons. Thibs is going to continue to give him big minutes and the return of Rose should improve Butler's FG%, giving Butler some more open looks. He's also a steals ace. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that his big preseason continues on into the regular season. He's only 25.

6.02 Wade, Dwyane - MIA - SG
What a difference a year makes! Last year, Wade was picked 2.09 in RIHC. Has he really dropped off that much? I don't think so. Obviously not going to play a full season (though he claims that is his goal) but even so. Wade puts up elite stats and fills the stats sheet (one of the few players in the league that's going to get you close to a 20/5/5/1.5/.5 of the core stats when he's on the floor). With Lebron gone in Miami now, Wade is going to be expected to do a lot more for the Heat. I know he's a risk/reward type guy but I think that if Wade plays even 60 games (roughly a repeat of last year)- he's still a decent value here.

6.03 Morris, Markieff - PHO - PF
Listed on many sites as a sleeper/breakout player, Markieff had a great 2nd half last year, and for the season averaged 14 ppg, 6 boards, off the bench.

With last years starting PF playing elsewhere, Markieff is virtually guaranteed a starting gig, so look for a spike in those numbers.

And you got to love a C eligible player that can knock down a trey a game.

6.04 West, David - IND - PF
Wade was a consideration here, but I ended up deciding not to take the health risk. Instead, I decided to aim for rebounding – particularly board that didn’t come with horrible FT%s. At the top of my rankings was Brook Lopez, but I just don’t trust his health. The other two options were Markieff Morris and David West. I anticipate similar stat profiles. Morris has more risk – up and down – and he’s 9 years younger than West. I’d have preferred Morris, but Dave R snatched him out from under my nose. I knew that would happen several times in this draft! At least this time I had a backup plan in mind.

West gives me rebounds along with some scoring, some blocks, and good percentages. With two of last year’s key Pacers gone, he’ll probably be asked to play more minutes this year, and in a 34 year old body with 11 NBA seasons under his belt, that may or may not be a good thing. But he’s been reasonably durable, so let’s go for it. FWIW, he ranked #48 in the ESPN player rater last year, which bodes well for pick 64.

I struggled with this pick. Korver is not a sexy choice as he will not improve, but if he can repeat last year's numbers I will be happy. He'll be among the leaders in 3s, and his 47.5 FG% last season is very impressive for a shooter. He's also no slouch in the remaining categories as he contributes everywhere besides for blocks.

Hibbert had a lot of ups and downs last season, but I'm hoping that he will rebound [no pun intended] this season. Indiana coach Frank Vogel plans to run the offense primarily through Hibbert and PF David West in the absence of leading scorer Paul George. Maybe this will lead to increased scoring from Hibbert. Averages of 14/8, and a couple blocks per game is what I'm looking for.

6.12 Wiggins, Andrew - MIN - SF
I thought about taking 2 SG/SF type players here. with 5 picks to go my short-list was Lance Stephenson and Andrew Wiggins. I couldn't find any more that fit my criteria (not yet banged up, expected playing time). hope was that those 2 survive. with 1 pick to go they did. I had to make my queue and thought whom might be my fallback if I don't get both. In the end I settled for Zach Randolph.

Wiggins is a rookie and may be inconsistent at some times. but he has the skill set to perform far better than his draft position. if you look at some projections you see that they all don't know how to value him. one site sees him hitting over 2 3's per game, the other with not even 1. on the other side the ones not valuing his 3's assume that he gets more rebounds. I think they simply projected him because of his position: SG or SF. I drafted him as a SF, which is also the position he seems to play most this season. I let surprise me what stats he will really deliver.

Carter-Williams was surprisingly good last season, and won the Rookie of the Year Award. His 1.9 steals per game ranked sixth in the league, and his 6.2 rebounds per game were the most in the league from the PG position. He can provide in all the categories, but unfortunately his contribution in FG% is a negative impact. Recovery from off-season shoulder surgery is going a bit slowly, but hopefully he won't miss too much of the start of the season.

I wanted another rebounder, and the ranks of those with significant boards is thinning greatly. I actually queued up three in advance of this pick: Valanciunas, Pekovic, and Tyson Chandler, but my top choice survived to me.

Valanciunas is not an elite shot-blocker, but frankly, that’s the last stat I need at this point. In fact, I resorted my rankings to eliminate the impact of blocks altogether, so any blocks he gets are a bonus that may or may not be useful. I’m hoping for something list 12 ppg, 9+ rebs, mid-50s FG%, and 76+% from the line. He’s only 22, but already entering his 3rd NBA season. Nothing flashy expected. Just solid mid-round value, with modest growth from last year.

I really wanted Valanciunas here, but Guru beat me to the punch. I gave consideration to Pekovic, but I couldn't overlook the upside presented by Jones.

Only 22 years old, Jones averaged 12 points, 7 boards, nearly a steal per, and 1.3 blocks. His excellent FG% and awful FT% means he'll fit right in with my team.

With Lin, Parsons gone, more minutes are in order, as is an improvement in last years stats.

I hemmed and hawed for about an hour on whether to take Hill or Jennings but ended up opting for Hill in the end as Jennings FG% is abhorrent. He also has played in at least 76 games each season of his career which makes him an attractive rotisserie option.

8.04 Crawford, Jamal - LAC - PG
Time to come out of the closet. I decided this year that I was going to punt assists from the start. Over each of the past three seasons, I’ve reached the mid-point of the season with no hope of competing in assists. At that point, it’s difficult to pull off an efficient trade to punt a category in return for useful stats. So this year I decided to start out on that assumption.

It may not be as crazy as it sounds. One year I did something similar with blocks, and won the championship that year. So it can be done.

I do, however, need at least one player eligible at PG in order to get stats from that dedicated slot. Two would be even better. Of course, since assists are of no value to me, it’s tough to find viable PGs without overpaying. That’s one reason I was really hoping to land Oladipo back in round 5.

Crawford is not the quintessential PG. He’s not even listed at PG for ESPN fantasy purposes. But this league is at Yahoo, where Crawford qualifies. I’m looking for points, treys, and FT%. Not expecting much else. My backup choice was Beverley – who I may still nab if he makes it back to me next round.

I searched again for a rebounder and a guard that shoots 3's.

With 5 picks to got I made a big man queue of Sullinger and Pekovic. What happened? they were taken with the next 2 picks. I then had to search for the next best player that fits my description and could only find Chandler. He is back with the Mavs, which he seems to like. He rebounds he blocks some and on a few occasions he even scores, although that is not his primary target. We will see how he will be used, but as long as he continues to put up rebounds he is able to get a lot of double-doubles.

on the other hand the top guard I had in my queue was Kevin Martin. and he survived. I don't know if that is good or bad because it means I am higher on him than some others. Martin, when healthy, can do a bit of everything. he must not be a big assist distributor for my team. he should give me some more rebounds than other guards, but primarily he should score and shoot 3's. and that excellent FT% compensates the poor % of Chandler.

His stats aren't great, but he's a starting point guard on a team with great scorers, and he doesn't have to split time with Jeremy Lin anymore. Atlanta has added some depth at swingman, so Carroll’s minutes may be under pressure. The return of Horford may also cut into his production. A repeat of last year may be a tall order. We’ll see.

I felt like I needed some size after taking guard after guard with my last several picks. Hill played very well last year and looks to be the starting center now with Pau Gasol gone. He's a nightly double/double threat with some upside potential.

Taj will be backing up both Noah and Gasol this year and averages 1.4 blocks per game, perhaps the best blocker still available in the draft. If one of them goes down he will be a tremendous value as he put up elite numbers in 8 games as a starter last year. Even as a backup, he's a solid backup and is going to play 20-30 minutes a night.

Afflalo had a great season last year for Orlando, averaging 18 points, 3.5 assists and boards, and nearly 2 treys per game, all with great %'s. He now has returned to Denver where he played productively from 2009-2011.

Denver = more talent than Orlando, so with other offensive options surrounding him, I expect a dip in production. Still a solid pick in round 10

10.04 Jackson, Reggie - OKC - PG
Time for another non-PG PG. My queue was Beverley, Jackson, and Avery Bradley. Beverley vaporized quite awhile ago, but the other two survived.

I’m hoping that Jackson can build on last year’s strong showing (#60 on ESPN player rater), even though his minutes were augmented by filling in for Russell Westbrook. Durant will be conceding a lot of minutes for the first month or two, and Jackson could benefit from some of that void. Regardless, I’ve got him near the top of my rankings now, he’s eligible at PG but his value isn’t dependent on assists, he should provide some steals (where I could use some support), he’s a 90% FT shooter, and although he’s missed some preseason action with a wrist injury, there doesn’t seem to be any sense that he’ll miss the start of the season. Only 24 – yet entering his 4th NBA season. And he crushed 47 HRs for Oakland in 1969.

10.08 Kanter, Enes - UTA - C
In addition to fantasy basketball, I have birdwatching as a hobby. And today was a big day. I got #250 on my 'life list', and it was a super-rare bird. A bird normally only seen in the Yukon, and just the 4th time it's been seen in Washington State.

But anyways ... I was driving to see the bird when my turn came up. I ended up drafting on my phone, and didn't have my queue list sorted. So I don't really have a rationale for Enes Kanter, other than he was on my list. He's moving to PF this season, and had 24 double-doubles last season. But he also ended up losing his starting gig halfway through the season. Maybe this is the year he earns being drafted #3 a few seasons ago.

I am still missing a 4th guard but looking at the available ones I did not see a fit for me. all of them would have been reaches. I settled for the next best thing than a guard: a small forward. I liked 2 of them so I put both in my queue and both survived.

a lot of so called experts see an injury risk in Danilo Gallinari. this might be the case, but he is simply too talented to let him pass at this point. he scores, including up to 2 threes per game, he gets some rebounds and assists as well, which means he has less stat-holes than other players at this point. and then there is health.

the 2nd player I like more than all of the available guards is KJ McDaniels, although McDaniels is should gain eligibility early as long as he stays the starter at SG. the projections for McDaniels vary a lot between the sites. he is just an unproven rookie. it looks like he should drain more threes than the average player at his position. he should also block more shots than the average. scoring and percentages are undetermined, while assists and steals can be ignored. that fits my team because my bigger players should produce more than average in these categories.

I wanted 1 more point guard to help in the always rare assists column. The fact that he is a decent 3 point shooter didn't hurt any either. He seems like a good fit in the Dallas offense and all of the news out of their camp indicates he is starting. I'm not really worried about the 2 less talented undrafted point guard behind him on the depth chart either. I feel like this could be a great value pick.

11.04 Plumlee, Miles - PHO - PF
It seems like there is some debate between which Plumlee is the better fantasy option. Maybe Mason would have been a good choice as a handcuff for Brook Lopez, but I choose to be optimistic about Brook's health this season.

Miles Plumlee was pretty good last year until he hit "the wall" in the second half. This year he should be better prepared for the length of the season. He doesn't have much competition in Phoenix for center minutes, so if I can get 12 points and 8 rebounds plus 1.5 blocks that would be fine with me.

I don't generally draft players that are not starters for their teams. But Hawes is going to earn significant time backing up both C/PF. And he provides a rare combo of categories that I am currently short in, 3s and blocks. If can find 30 minutes of floor time per game, he'll be a valuable contributor at the Center position for me.

11.09 Thompson, Tristan - CLE - PF
Looking to get my final rebounder. I’m looking at available players in two sets of projections, and Thompson now ranks as the top rebounder in both – by a lot. Granted, he won’t get the minutes has had last year, and his usage is up in the air right now, but I still think there is potential here, and Varejao has been anything but durable, so the minutes may materialize. He played only 24 minutes in last night preseason game against Chicago – in which the Cavs seemed to play a reasonably “normal” rotation – and scored 10 pts with 8 boards. OK for an 11th round pick.

This may be a reach, and I’m not at all convinced this is the way to go. Chances are that I could get him in a later round. But the scarcity of rebounders is spooking me and the clock is ticking on this pick, so I’m taking him and moving on.

11.10 Plumlee, Mason - BKN - C
I've been trying to figure when the right time to grab Plumlee was, and while this may be early, it was now or never. With oft injured Lopez, and an aging " undrafted " ahead of him, there should be plenty of playing time for Mason.

Plumlee was named to the All Rookie squad, despite averaging only 7.4 ppg, 4.5 boards and 1 block ( in only 18 minutes per ). Expect the minutes to soar as well as the numbers. I know it's preseason, but he recently notched 20 points ans 17 boards.

Besides, I'm a Nets fan....

He was the only guy I had on my queue when I finally had some time to check the phone during substituting today. I would have preferred to go through and do a more through brush through of who was available but I only had ~8 minutes to make a pick. Wroten kind of came out of nowhere last year and even put up a triple double or two. MCW is still a ways off from returning so I expect Wroten to continue to get big minutes. I'm not overly thrilled with the pick as I wanted Plumlee taken a pick earlier, but we'll see.

Waiters has a much better supporting cast with Lebron and Love on board so there will be fewer opportunities but hopefully more open looks can increase his FG%. He's the starting SG in Cleveland and is not gun shy, leading the team in shots this preseason. He had a really hot stretch toward the end of the season, also he's still really young so there's some upside.

I was all set to take Bradley last round, but decided he’d probably slide to this pick – and if not, there were other similar players that I could get.

Bradley is my third player with PG eligibility, so I have avoided that potential slot problem while avoiding assists. Bradley should be the starting SG in Boston, entering his 5th NBA season. He’ll bring support in treys and steals, some points, and FG%. He has not been a model of durability lately, missing 54 games over the past two seasons. But this is the 12th round, so it’s not like an injury would be devastating.

I don't see anyone with upside I need to have, so I'll take a guy who I know will give me solid production (when he's playing). I'm sure his current injury has caused him to fall a bit, but it doesn't seem to be a long term issue. Frye averaged 2 threes a game last season, to go along with 0.7 steals and 0.8 blocks. The Magic shelled out a lot of $$ to sign him this past offseason, so the starting job is his when he makes it back onto the court.

So it took until pick 140 before I start drafting players I know little about. But he's currently one of the top available players using Yahoo (#116), ESPN (#118), or Rotowire (#108). And in the new top-150 list at Yahoo, Draymond Green is valued at #82. So it appears that I am getting him at a great value. So what is he going to give me? He appears to be a solid athlete, able to play two positions, and able to contribute in all categories. I hope that he gets enough court-time to earn the praises he is receiving.

I keep saying the same though: I don't like the available options and don't want to reach. there are some guards I would take in the last 3 rounds though and I hope that 2 of them make it back to me. having said that, I wanted some rebounders and looked at starters or backups that should get significant time and who proved to be successful in the past.

Henson will be a backup behind injury prone Ersan Ilyasova (already banged up and missing more preseason games than planned) and Larry Sanders (surgery last week, probably back for the regular season). his minutes may rely on the health of Ilyasova and the consistency of Sanders, who was not that great last season. as long as he gets 25 minutes he should do ok for my team. everything more and he would not have been available at this point.

14.12 Cole, Norris - MIA - PG
It is finally time for some guards.

Latest reports indicate that Cole may start at PG when the regular season begins. this was enough for me to get him with my very next pick. I have not looked at his stats. I am simply interested in a starting PG that gets significant minutes. as previously said: more minutes get your more opportunities. more opportunities gets you more stats.

15.01 Morrow, Anthony - OKC - SF
Anthony Morrow was simply picked because he is still in the hunt for a starting position (SG or SF) on a Durant-less team. he should be valuable for at least the first month of the season. Until then I should know his role and if I still want to hold onto him when Durant is back.

15.03 Bargnani, Andrea - NYK - PF
I swear I had Dalembert ahead of him in my queue. This is basically a wasted pick and I can't wait to cut him for someone useful.

15.04 Dalembert, Samuel - NYK - C
The last starting center left in the draft, and it's nice to have 1 Knick on my roster. He hasn't been anything super the last few years, but if he can get his minutes up to about 27 per game, I think he can still put up 8 points, 8 boards, and 2 blocks. My centers are injury prone, so I needed another guy just in case, and Dalembert is a pretty good band-aid.

15.05 Green, Gerald - PHO - SG
Last season, Green averaged a career-high 15.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 2.5 3PT, 0.9 steals, and good percentages in 28 minutes per game. If he can get similar minutes this season, he should find a spot in my lineup.

15.07 Price, Ronnie - LAL - PG
Price has started the last 3 preseason games (2 where Jeremy Lin did not play, and 1 where Lin came off the bench), and there are rumblings Price may open the season as the starter. A few years back I drafted the starting Laker PG in Smush Parker in the last round, and he returned good value.

15.09 Thompson, Hollis - PHI - SF
My third Thompson! Penciled in as Philly starter, in his second NBA year. 6’8” and can play both SG and SF. Will start the year on my bench, however, and could easily be dropped early in favor of someone more promising out of the gate.

15.10 Bogdanovic, Bojan - BKN - SG
At this point, Bojan is the starting SF for the Nets ( and hopefully Yahoo will grant him F status shortly ). Known as a shooter, he averaged 21 points and over 4 RB's for Serbia in the world Cup. Does that mean anything, I don't know.

15.11 Napier, Shabazz - MIA - PG
Basically just wanted to take a flier on him. I feel like he has a good opportunity to outperform draft position. Also, LeBron was high on Napier. I remember LeBron wanting the Heat to get Napier in the draft.

Another rookie. Might get 6 reb, 1 blk, 1 stl by years end. Hate the FT%.

Looked good in the preseason. 3pt specialist.

Looking over my team I have two Wesley's and two Marcus's (Both BOS reserves)...

16.02 Wright, Brandan - DAL - PF
I just wanted to take a flier on a blocks goon here. I think he has some upside and Chandler hasn't exactly been a model of health in recent years.

16.03 Hilario, Nene - WAS - PF
Injuries have plagued Nene over his career, so I made this pick hoping that he can stay healthy.

If so he can provide solid numbers. He managed 14 points, 6 RB's, 3 dimes, 1.2 steals and nearly a block a game.

If he can even make it through 53 games like last year, I'll be happy with this pick, anything else is gravy.

Otherwise he can probably join Bojan on waivers. "

My token UConn pick. And my 4th OKC player. Lamb should get extra run during the period when Durant is out.

16.05 Williams, Mo - MIN - PG
For my last pick, watching at my draft, I found out that after Brandon Knight (8th round) I did not take any other PG. So I targeted one of the last still on the board. I had a short list with Nash, Vasquez, Felton, Hinrich and Williams. I selected Williams because he is behind only Rubio (no JJ Barea), so if he goes down i think Mo can handle the job very well and is still a better player than the others.

16.06 Roberson, Andre - OKC - SF
Last year Roberson averaged 1.9 points per game. I am hoping for an improvement. He has started all but 1 preseason game, one of which included a line of 15 points, 10 bds, 3 assts, 1 stl, 1 blk. I'm happy to give him a one game in season audition before I move onto the waiver wire.

16.08 O'Quinn, Kyle - ORL - PF
He's had a good pre-season. His value is likely dependent on the health of Nikola Vucevic and Channing Frye. Since Frye is a little beat up, maybe I'll get a couple weeks of early production.

16.09 Barnes, Harrison - GSW - SF
It looks like Barnes will be starting in Golden State, and local media seems to think he plays much better when he's in a supporting role amongst the starters than last year's experiment where he was the primary option with the second team. I'm hoping he can recapture that magic he displayed in the playoffs 2 seasons ago.

I always like this guy. His per minute stats are amazing across the board but sadly he never gets minutes. If an injury strikes in Toronto he wll be ready to contribute.

16.12 Thompson, Jason - SAC - PF
seems like he will be the starter at PF at the beginning of the season. that was enough for me because starters are usually not available with the last pick of the draft. not much more to say.
