Subject: RIHC 2015-16: Draft Rationales

  Posted by: Guru - [330592710] Thu, Oct 15, 2015, 15:43

This thread will contain all of the individual pick rationales for the 2015 RIHC draft. RIHC managers should supply those rationales in the Rationale Collection thread. You will not be able to post directly into this thread.

I expect that this thread will be updated daily.

1.01 Davis, Anthony - NOR - PF
Without any Banzai scheme to confound me, anybody in the top three --Davis, Curry, Harden in some order -- looked good to me. 3rd position was gone to Goldcoach before I could think about it. I decided I’d go for #1 and Davis if available. Looking into things, Davis wasn’t as much a *consensus* #1 as I thot -- but I’ve owned Curry and Harden before, and Variety is the Spice of Life.

Nothing needful to say about him, except I’m curious to see whether he does add 3s to his game.

1.02 Curry, Stephen - GSW - PG
I normally prefer to draft later rather then near the top, but given the opportunity to have any draft selection other than 3rd, I opted for #2, knowing I'd probably end up with Curry, or at " worst " Anthony Davis.

Is there anyone more fun to watch than Curry? Not for me at least. Anyone with a sweeter shot? Last years league MVP, a PG that can do it all. Well, he doesn't block many shots... I'll live with it.

Stephen led the league last year in FT% ( 91% ), steals and 3's. Not a bad start for my roster. He should score around 24ppg, give me 4+ boards and maybe 8 assists per game. Despite his long range bombing, he shot 48% from the floor last year, not to shabby.

I just wish he didn't play more than half his games on the west coast, often to late for me to watch.

1.03 Durant, Kevin - OKC - PF
First choice at draft pick. Selected spot #3. In my mind the top four guys were more or less equal with each having their pluses and very few minuses. I chose position three because I hoped it would give me a slight edge on quality over position four.

This was a difficult choice Harden or Durrant. A playmaking shooting guard, or a dynamic forward. It seems that the pool for Guard is slightly deeper than PF, plus I am in hopes that KD will be hungrier having had to miss almost an entire season.

1.04 Harden, James - HOU - SG
In my eyes, the top 4 picks in 8-cat roto are crystal clear this year. After that, there's a drop off, so I was delighted to land the 4th pick.

Secretly, i was hoping and expecting Durant to fall to me, but i'm still pleased with Harden. SG and SF are rail thin in the top tiers this year, and i don't expect personnel changes in Houston to affect his outlook in the slightest.

After all, it's freakin' James Harden!

1.05 Cousins, Demarcus - SAC - C
My choice came down to Cousins or Westbrook and i really like the top true center in the league for fantasy purposes.
I'm expecting big numbers in pts, reb, stl, blk. Only negative his ft%. Treys will come from others.

1.06 Westbrook, Russell - OKC - PG
I took Westbrook 7th last year in RIHC and he was so fun to own. He is a triple double threat, an elite stealer (is this a term?) and FT% shooter while getting 1+ 3 a game. His stats will likely take a dip with Durant back though hopefully not too much in Billy Donovan’s new offense.

1.07 James, Lebron - CLE - SF
I was looking at either LBJ or Chris Paul. While he's maybe not a top 3 guy anymore and the news about his rest plans this season aren't great, he's still the boss in CLE. And as long as Kyrie is out (and Shumpert to a lesser degree), James will have to carry that load. I also like the 7+ assists in a SF/PF spot, takes some of the pressure off of landing a big PG.

1.08 Paul, Chris - LAC - PG
With positions 1-7 gone i opted for 8 because I would be happy with any of them as my first pick. To me there were no surprise picks that got into the top 8 so i was very pleased that it was Paul that fell to me. As last years number 3 guy, i would have selected him 4. I am anchored in assists and he isnt too shabby in 3s, steals and pts.

1.09 Wall, John - WAS - PG
I was pretty bummed at getting pick #9 as i feel like there is a pretty steep drop after the top 8 picks.

That being said Wall gives me elite assists along with decent contributions across the board. If he can improve his percents slightly I think he could pay off this draft slot.

1.10 Lillard, Damian - POR - PG
I was planning on taking the 12th pick, but when that got snagged, I figured 10 was better than 11. I was hoping to get Lillard or Wall with this pick. Lillard should put up a high volume year, since the Blazers roster has been dismantled and he's the only viable scoring option. He can easily put up 25 ppg, to go along with his solid threes and assists.

1.11 Thompson, Klay - GSW - SG
For the second year in a row, I’ve gotten the last pick in the draft selection round. Last year, I ended up picking 9th; this year, it’s 11th. I’d have preferred something earlier this year, but,… it is what it is.

I was hoping that Lilliard would slip to me, but no dice. So my choice came down to Klay Thompson or Kawhi Leonard, who seem to be the consensus “best players available”. I ended up taking Thompson, based on greater assurance of minutes/game. With the Spurs, you just never know how rested they’ll be. And while Leonard always looks great in the postseason, his regular season stats have been chronically hampered by missed games, as he’s never played in more than 65 regular season games.

Thompson was a stalwart on my RIHC team last year, when I picked him at 3.09. He ended up ranking #7 on the ESPN player rater. At pick 1.11, that’s not such a steal anymore, but I think I’m getting good first-round value. In particular, for a prodigious 3-point shooter (second in the NBA last year, trailing only Steph Curry) , his overall FG% has been steadily climbing, hitting 46.3% last year (and 44% on treys).

1.12 Leonard, Kawhi - SAS - SF
Picking at the back end of the draft, all of the super duper stars are gone so I thought a bit about the options for building my team, and finally decided on starting with Leonard and Butler. Based on the limited amount of research I did, some indications point to Leonard being the focal point of San Antonio’s offense going forward. He has already been a consistent contributor in basically every category, including being a league leader in steals last year. If he can increase his offensive production even a little, he should be a great nucleus to build around.

2.01 Butler, Jimmy - CHI - SG
Butler is very similar to Leonard in that he will contribute something in virtually every category. He seemingly willed himself into being a great ballplayer last year, and that is very appealing to me. I believe some experts think he is due for some regression but I am willing to take that chance. I think he and Leonard together complement each other really well and make a great combo to build around. I usually have always tried to secure a C and PG with my first two picks, so this will be something a little different and interesting for me.

2.02 Gasol, Marc - MEM - C
It seems as though his preseason ranking is pointing more toward a late 2nd round pick. But my next picks is late 3rd round, so I have to be looking at anyone who is likely to be selected in the top 30. And if I eschew a big here, I’ll probably have to either choose one of the brick FT shooters later on, or concede blocks altogether.

With Klay Thompson on board, I wanted to get a PF/C type, and hopefully one who will not kill my FT%. Gasol fits the bill, even though he is not a super-elite blocker (1.6) or rebounder (7.8). His FG% of just under 50% and FT% of almost 80% elevate his value beyond what his counting stats would command, which is probably why his ADP tends to be lower than his true value. Last year, he ranked #12 on the ESPN player rater, not only due to good across the board stats (excl. treys), but also to his durability, playing in 81 games. And by playing in all but one game, he ranked #10 overall in blocks (131), even though his per game average was not top-10.

Not a sexy pick, but the Klay/Gasol tandem provides a solid foundation that give me great flexibility in the next few rounds.

2.03 Gobert, Rudy - UTA - C
I always get enamored by the big men who have strong finishes to the prior season, and they always burn me (see: Larry Sanders). But I figured I'd give it a shot again. Blocks are hard to come by and Gobert gets a lot of them. There are a few centers who put up similar stats but Gobert is probably the best FT shooter out of all of them so he won't kill me in that category. Also, he doesn't foul as much as other big guys so he should be able to stay on the court for 36 minutes per game. 12 points, 12 boards, 2.5 blocks is what I expect, and he might be able to do better.

2.05 George, Paul - IND - SF
This pick came down to George and Griffin. Off a major injury, i liked that he returned at the end of last year and has played well in the preseason. The Pacers appear to be ready to have him do a little bit of everything this year. His flex, his hunger, his new role and having a Clipper already landed me here

2.06 Aldridge, Lamarcus - SAS - C
New team and system to learn but I don't see his production slipping too far from when he was with POR (17th ranked last season). Duncan is also a factor here - if/when they are on the floor together, I'm hoping it frees up LMA a bit and will boost his FG% but at the cost of some ppg and rpg. I'm ok with that if LBJ can put up 25/6 again. And when Duncan needs rest or gets Popped, LMA will be there to take those stats.

One last comment - both these guys have dual positions on ESPN (SF/PF and PF/C). I really like the flexibility of multiple positions for both drafting a team and also game management later in the season.

2.07 Ibaka, Serge - OKC - C
No qualms with taking another Thunder here. Centers dry up quickly so if one is available without reaching, all the better. Ibaka is a top shot blocker to go with solid scoring, rebounding, and a great FT% for a big man. And he also started shooting 3s, hitting over 1 a game last season.

Very good ast and stl, the only concern is his fg%.

2.09 Griffin, Blake - LAC - PF
Difficult pick, this one. The Center run that preceded my pick narrowed my choices to Griffin and Lowry.

I'm expecting over 20ppg, volume FG% and strong 5+ assist contributions. Like Dave R mentioned, getting used to ESPN eligibility is a new experience for me, but i figured there was enough in the next tier of centers to hang on for another 6 picks.

2.10 Green, Draymond - GSW - PF
I took Green in the 11th round last year based on his preseason performances. I wasn't expecting him to even start with Lee in the fold but he did! I learned first hand how he contributes across the board and am ready to spend a second rnd pick on him without blinking.

2.11 Millsap, Paul - ATL - PF
I love versatile bigs, and that's just what Millsap is. I'm surprised he didn't go earlier, having been ranked 16th overall last year. I was actually hoping Blake slipped to me, but I'm very happy with Millsap

Not a prolific scorer, Paul average a very efficient 16.7ppg shooting 48% from the floor, and 78% from the line. Add around 8 RB's, 3 dimes, 1 block, nearly 2 steals a game, and 1 trey.

I think he's a great fit with Curry as the cornerstone of my team. It's to bad ESPN isn't as liberal as Yahoo where he is C eligible also.

2.12 Lowry, Kyle - TOR - PG
Planning out these picksas I mocked it out my targets were Bledsoe and Hayward (assuming I would just miss Draymond Green, as I did). Bledsoe went at 2.08 so Lowry was my substitute.

Don’t love the FG% but contributes in assists, 3s steals and FT%. Oh, and I’m sure you heard but he wants everyone to know that he’s not fat any more.

I generally shy away from Raptors -- why give them the power to disappoint me in real life AND fantasy? -- but I’m willing to have a few on my team this year.

Also considered: Jeff Teague (3.03)

3.01 Hayward, Gordon - UTA - SF
Young and hopefully still improving, the centrepiece of the offence, recognizes there are higher expectations of him. Hayward contributes in points, 3s, assists and steals. Good reports from camp. Says he wants to be recognized as one of the best in the league at his position. Don’t know about that, but if he can move it up a notch he’ll return very good value.

3.02 Vucevic, Nikola - ORL - C
I wanted to grab a Center here and there were quite a few to choose from. Nerlens, Horford, Pau, Love went in the next 6 selections, and Lopez/Bosh soon after. I decided I was better served with youth and opted for Nicola over Nerlens.

The only downside to Vucevic is lack of blocks for a big, averaging less than 1 per game. Maybe he can improve. Otherwise he's been pretty much a beast, last year averaging 19 ppg, 11 boards, all while shooting 52% from the floor and 75% from the charity stripe.

I can't complain with production like that

3.03 Teague, Jeff - ATL - PG
Not an elite PG but improving each year. With the top PGs already off the board I needed (and got) a solid performer. Steady might be the best adjective to use. I don't expect double digit assists, but 7+ would be nice, anything more is gravy.

I was itching to pick a PG here, but was only really interested in Lowry or Teague. I then switched my attention to a center. In the end, i went for Noel because of those combined 4+ steal and block numbers. Also considered Pau, Lopez and Horford. Hope i picked the right one.

3.05 Batum, Nicolas - CHA - SF
According to my draft plan, here comes a SF.

With Hayward gone, goes Batum and some risk. He can fill up multiple categories and puts up good shooting numbers, but he has to change teams and learn a new offense.

Maybe I ranked him higher than others, but needed his 150 treys.

Similar to my thoughts with Ibaka, I saw Horford as good value now so I wouldn't have to reach for a C eligible player later. Al is so solid across the board (including some 3s this preseason) with a good health history-- minus his 2 freak pec injuries to different pecs.

3.08 Love, Kevin - CLE - PF
With my back court covered i moved down low. Love was 34 last so those that took him in round one were dissapointed. This year he has a year in Cleveland under his belt and he may be scoring option number 2 anywhere from week 1 until January. If that is closer to January i expect a big jump. If it is only week 1 then i expect similar numbers which is appropriate for pick 32.

I wanted some points and 3's to help build around Wall and Melo so Gay is a nice fit. He isn't amazing at anything but chips in in every single cat.

3.10 Oladipo, Victor - ORL - SG
Deepo is in his 3rd year and has made strides each year. Over the summer the reports are that he has worked on his shooting. He is pretty solid across all guard categories, and word is he'll share the PG minutes so his assists might improve over the 4 he averaged last year. Scott Skiles emphasizes defense, so his steals might get an uptick as well.

3.11 Lopez, Brook - BKN - C
Like Marc Gasol, Lopez is a big who can shoot free throws. He a good scorer (career 17.9ppg), and a decent blocker and rebounder – although again, not prodigious like most of the other bigs that are going to go in the next round or so.

The risk with Lopez is his health. He’s had two seasons that were virtual washouts, although he did manage to play in 72 games last year, and finished the season strong, averaging almost 20ppg after the ASB with 9.2reb, 1.8blk, and 52%/82% in 32 min per game. Great value IF he can stay healthy.

3.12 Bosh, Chris - MIA - PF
Bosh figures to be one of the main offensive weapons for the Miami, and I am looking for 20 ppg from him with good shooting percentages. He should chip in some 3's and steals also. He is probably a little light with boards and blocks for a big but, even so, with PF-C eligibility and his other contributions, he will be a versatile piece for me.

4.01 Faried, Kenneth - DEN - PF
ESPN has Faried projected for 16 ppg with 11 boards and about a steal and a block per game. He addresses my need for rebounds without sacrificing too much anywhere else. He will be playing for a new coach in a new system and finished last year strong, leading some to speculate that he could be a candidate for a breakout type season. I felt like he balances pretty well with Bosh, giving me a couple of solid front court players.

4.02 Jackson, Reggie - DET - PG
The second returnee from last year’s RIHC team, although that was as a 10th rounder to help back up Durant. Once Jackson was dealt to the Pistons, he flourished, averaging 17.6 points and 9.2 assists in 32 mpg, shooting 44%/80%. Hoping for a steal and a trey per game to go with that.

The other guys in contention here were Conley and Tyreke Evans, but I thought Jackson had the better upside, entering his prime years at age 25.

4.03 Conley, Mike - MEM - PG
I wanted to take Bosh here but he was gone already. Andre Drummond was very tempting because he is in beast-mode, but his FT% is so atrocious and I couldn't justify punting a category already. Mike Conley isn't a glamorous pick but he puts up very solid numbers across the board and he is in a contract year. He's also pretty durable. Other years, I have left point guards until later and have had to deal with table scraps so I wanted to take care of this position early.

4.05 Drummond, Andre - DET - C
The way the draft has played out i had a chance to be pretty balanced if i took a C in the 4th. I had three on my radar and when Favors went before me it came down to 2. The keys have been turned over to Andre this year. He could very well lead the league in rebounds as his 20 rebound preseason game is just a glimpse of what one may see from time to time in the regular season. With that an expectation that he will bump in Offense too, i selected him and have accepted he may lose the league in FT percentage

Needed a guard here, Tyreke fits in nicely and is a rare PG/SG/SF. He contributes across the board and should be getting a lot of minutes with Holiday on a limit and Cole out. His FT% was also an outlier last year - his career avg is closer to 77%.

Best available.
He’s a double-double guy(15 / 10 last year), he’s continually gotten better from the line (career high 75% last year) and shoots almost 50% from the field. He even contributes a couple of assists.

The big knock is that he doesn’t get blocks. His exit from Detroit should bode well for his fantasy future, as he won’t have to share rebounds and court time with Andre Drummond any longer.

Again, i was thinking of a PG here. But i just could not leave Whiteside on the board. He was a waiver wire triumph for me last year, and i'm elated to get him at the end of round 4. A double-double with 2.5+ blocks is what's needed here.

Lots of upside, lots of opportunity, lots of questions about his knee. Even though he hasn't (and probably won't), played any preseason games the buzz on his situation is pretty good. I am in hopes of more scoring from him with Ellis gone and their other offensive weapons either aging or injured. Threes and a tad over 5 rebs would be very nice.

4.11 Towns, Karl-anthony - MIN - PF
You got to love someone with 3 names. I don't know, maybe a tad early, but this is around where I've seen him ranked and drafted.

I love the upside in blocks, and the fact he's a decent shooter, both from the floor and the line. I'm a little worried about playing time in what seems to be a crowded, although undistinguished front court for Minnesota

But as the number 1 pick he's got a legitimate shot at ROY, and I expect Minnesota to throw him to the " wolves ", so to speak

4.12 Valanciunas, Jonas - TOR - C
Wanted a big on the turn here, and after heavy thinking decided to pull the trigger on Paul-Anthony Towns. Unfortunately Dave R. snatched him from me at 4.11. Plan B was Valancuinas. The 23-year old on past performance offers 8.5+ rebounds per game, and over a block plus 12 or so points with a good% and is OK from the stripe. Plus he signed a big contract extension, and is said to be playing more in the 4th quarter this year, which should ratchet up his numbers. Lowry says he wants to get him more involved in the offence, too, which makes this a kind of Lowry-Valancuinas stack.

I’d been able to determine my previous picks fairly easily, but now there were times at the top of my list there were a number of ways I could go. Looking from a couple of picks before I came up, at various times on top of my list were Isaiah Thomas (5.03), Brandon Knight (5.03), Chandler Parsons (4.10), Khris Middleton (5.11), Kyle Korver (5.08) and Danny Green (5.09).

Ellis has been durable, and with my 5th starting pick I want someone who will be in the lineup, and is solid rather than spectacular. He’ll be the 2nd scoring option on his team. I’ll look for guys with more upside later.

5.02 Walker, Kemba - CHA - SG
Having gone big with 3 of the last 4 picks, I needed to offer Steph some help. I had wanted Dragic with my last pick, but he was gone, and this time Ellis was my guy. Toral snatched him first, no doubt in payback for me taking Towns at 4.11

Kemba's a pretty good player, although known to toss some bricks at times. I think I have enough solid shooters to compensate.

Still young, I'm hoping for an improvement in his FG% to go along with his 80+% from the line, in addition to an expected 17ppg, 5 dimes, and 1.5 steals and 1.5 treys per game

Another PG who can score in bunches and dish out dimes. If he gets the starting gig he's a steal here, if he's the 6th man he can still contribute immensely and is worth the pick.

Knight was having another great season with Milwaukee before his trade to Phoenix where he slowed down and then suffered an ankle injury, needing surgery. The Suns though re-signed him to a big deal and he's played well this preseason so I'm optimistic about a return to form. I also considered Al Jefferson (5.10).

Was targeting a guard here and Ariza was the best available but with limited upside. He has the potential to add 4+ 3s + steals but with a weak FG and will probably take a hit with Lawson in town. Ok with the pick but not excited about it.

5.08 Korver, Kyle - ATL - SG
After Drummond my hope was one of 2 players would be there in the next pick tho I didn't expect either. Big V went 48 so the hope was Knight. Unfortunately he went 2 picks before me. That moved the focus to a category ace: Kyle Korver. With Drummond carrying me in rebounds, I added Korver to take care of 3's. Certain categories are hard to cover if u aren't intentional about them in the draft so Korver was the guy.

Debated taking Green in round 4 so I was absolutely thrilled getting him at pick 57.

I mainly drafted him for his elite threes but his out of position blocks and over a steal per game are super valuable at this point in the draft.

5.10 Jefferson, Al - CHA - PF
Jefferson was a value pick at this point. In the past he has gone higher, but last season was kind of a dud. However, he lost 25 pounds over the offseason after swearing off Popeye's chicken (seriously), and he is in the all-important contract year. He is a good source of points and rebounds, primarily. The 2 things that hurt his value in the last couple of years were poor FT shooting and lower blocks. But earlier in his career he has been a pretty good FT shooter and better shot blocker. I'm hoping that the better conditioning will bring those stats back up to their previous levels.

5.11 Middleton, Khris - MIL - SF
Brutal. I had to set up a 6-9 man queue before heading out for about 8 hours. My top four names were Brandon Knight, Trevor Ariza, Danny Green, and Al Jefferson. I really thought one of those four would make it through the 5 picks before me. But, no…..

So I ended up with Middleton, who was the “next man up”. I don’t know much about him, and never saw him play until the playoffs last year, when he looked pretty good. But after doing some more research in preparation for this rationale, I’m feeling better. When starting last year, he average 14.5 pts, 4.7 rebs, 2.7 asts, 1.6 steals, and 1.4 treys – pretty good breadth. Also a good FT shooter (86%), and a FG% of near 47% is good for a distance shooter. He ended up ranked #43 on the ESPN player rater last year, which is pretty encouraging, considering he was a bencher player for the first month or so, averaging less than 23 minutes through December. At age 24, this could be his breakout year.

I'm guessing Duncan is good for at least one more solid year and will provide steady big man stats whenever he is in the lineup. I've had him on a few teams in recent years and never been disappointed. He is one of the top projected block leaders left in the draft at this point which addresses one of my needs.

6.02 Antetokounmpo, Giannis - MIL - SF
I was kind of hoping for another big here – primarily Jefferson (who I would have actually taken at 5.11). I wasn’t psychologically prepared to step up to the statistical challenges of adapting to DeAndre Jordan (been there, done that.) The next guy up in my queue was Antetokounmpo. Another Buck – which means another guy I haven’t seen much of. But after some research, he’s sounding a bit like a budding Kirilenko, a 7-foot stat stuffer who won’t turn 21 until December.

Ridiculously long wingspan and stride length, and a surprisingly adept ball handler – all as evidenced here. Ranked #51 on the ESPN player rater last year, and should be poised to improve – perhaps significantly. Not really a “big” statistically, but seems like a good gambit here.

6.03 Carroll, Demarre - TOR - SF
I really stressed over this pick more than any other. I wanted a swingman who hits 3s and gets steals. These guys are a dime a dozen it seems, but I went with Carroll because his new situation in Toronto should give him a lot more scoring opportunities than he had in Atlanta, and his FG% is better than most. I probably stretched and got him a little early but I didn't know what would be available for me in my next pick, 19 picks later.

I was debating between Hill and Gorgui Dieng and thought I might be able to get Hill here and grab Dieng in round 7 - Goldcoach ended up getting him at 7.03, 4 spots ahead of me. I actually would have preferred Dieng because George is back and Ellis is going to eat Hill's lunch + I think Dieng is in line for a lot of minutes. I took Hill to fill in the PG/SG spot where my team is weak and he is a starter.

After drafting 3 backcourt players and 2 centers, I have the flexibility of now going with who I feel is the best overall available player which I believe to be Tobias. He has a great overall game which includes being a plus scorer with solid %s and he contributes in steals, blocks and 3s.

Wanted guards in the next couple of rounds.

Beal broke out with a huge postseason performance, his per-game averages of 23.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game in 10 playoff games would make him an elite option.

I expect a huge breakout coming at some point, but he needs to increase his efficiency, both by getting to the free-throw line more often and by taking more 3-pointers instead of long twos.

The PG selection is thinning out big style now, so i decided to go a little earlier than expected on Jack. He's the unquestioned starter, with very little in his path to 30+ MPG. I'm hoping that equates to a career year for JJ, who posted averages of 15.9 points, 6.6 assists and 1.2 steals as starter. If i get more than 3/4 of that, this is a decent pick.

Danny Green, gone. Tobias Harris, gone. Bradley Beal, gone. Andrew Wiggins, gone.

So, hello Demar Derozen. Demar can fill the stat sheet, with the exception of 3's, which is what I really wanted here. But I thought the rest of his game was to good to pass up.

Averaging 20 points, 4.1 RB's, 3.5 assists, and 1.3 steals last year, I'm expecting at least the same, after all he's in a contract year. Maybe he will improve from beyond the arc, he did average a 3 per game two years ago.

6.12 Lopez, Robin - NYK - C
On the turn here, I wanted a PG and -- someone else. Lopez was the someone else. I viewed this as a value pick at a time when a number of centers were likely to be chosen shortly.

This Lopez is the undisputed starting center for the Knickerbockers. Unlike other centers that might be considered, he isn’t time-sharing, or coming off a year of personal problems of an undisclosed nature. He’s a source of decent numbers of boards and blocks and FG%, and with more minutes should be able to ratchet the good numbers up without hurting %s.

Also considered: Dirk Nowitzki (7.06)

7.01 Williams, Deron - DAL - PG
Wanted a PG here. Thinking I should have picked Thomas or Knight or Wade or Lawson last time. However I throw out Williams’s performance on a trainwreck team last year and think he can recover some of his former lustre on a serious team. I’m worried about his calf and he's not getting younger , but if he were unflawed he wouldn’t be available here. When healthy I think he can recover half of what he had three years ago. He won’t be scoring 19 PPG or putting up 8 APG or shooting .450 -- but he should be closer to that vale level than to last year’s which makes him OK here, and I could use the assists.

7.02 Gortat, Marcin - WAS - C
I like the fact that Gortat shoots 55% from the floor for his career, and 68% from the foul line. ( not too shabby for a center ). I also love the fact that he played in all but 1 game the past two years, and as the only reliable C in Washington should be penciled in for 30 + minutes.

Gortat is a sure bet for 13-14 ppg, 9 boards, and around 100 blocks. Solid production in round 7.

With the C category thinning out I began looking here. The Min front court is going to be crowded this year but this guy scored with high percentages on few shots so he doesn't need a lot of touches. Indications are he will play the four alongside Towns (who I also considered here) Last year my C position earned me punter of the year in FT% so in the back of my heard I wanted someone who could mke it from the stripe.

Philly will be a collective bombscare again this season, but i see Bob as a constant. His FG% needs major work, but i was looking for a near league-leader in 3s here, whilst offering some upside in steals and FT%. He's been deadly from range in pre-season, so hoping this to translate when the games really start to count.

Elf started slow, and rapidly gained steam. He finished with 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game in 2014, to go with 1.7 steals per game. His value will be depressed by these stats: 55% from the FT line, and 0.1 three pointers per game.

The Magic are a young, fast, athletic team and should be exciting to watch this season, and Payton will be running the show.

7.06 Nowitzki, Dirk - DAL - PF
Nowitzki had very similar stats last season to my previous selection, Tobias Harris. The main difference is Tobias is .5 per game better in steals while Dirk is an elite FT% shooter. After playing just under 30 mpg last season, many are expecting that number to fall further this year, but I can’t see it falling too far considering the extreme lack of frontcourt depth on the Mavs.

Had to grab Jordan here, he's too valuable to specific teams to let slide any further. There's no real question, the guy is an absolute beast but his FT will crush any team hes a part of. 12/15/2.5 with a 70% FG% is realistic but at the cost of a full stat category.

This pick was bitter sweet. The picks between my selection of Wade and McCollum included the most picks of guys I wanted in the draft. Hill, Harris Beal, Jack, Derozan, Gortat and Covington will all be great picks. Their going allowed me to move up ADP and take McCollum. He was a stud in college and is on everyone's breakout list. With Portland rebuilding and CJ being the second option I expect points, 3s and assists to come be at a great value for pick 80.

I had considered Rose with my prior pick, so when he was still available this late in the draft I figured I would roll the dice and grab him here. I didn't really need another PG, but he is too good to pass up. His legs are obviously a big concern, but he held up okay last year and hopefully will be a little better this year (60+ games?). I'm not at all concerned about his orbital bone fracture, and he is likely to play on opening night. I don't expect him to put up the numbers of his prime, but I think he's an easy 20 pts, 5 reb, 5 assists guy.

7.11 Kanter, Enes - OKC - C
Once again, I had to set a queue for the next two picks, the latter which was about 9 picks away. This time, my top two names held up. Not sure what to think about that.

Kanter is another center (my 3rd) with good FT shooting. After joining OKC last season, he averages 18.7pts, and 11 rebs in 31 minutes. Admittedly, there were some big injury-related holes to fill at OKC last year, so he may have more competition for minutes. He’s limited as a stealer & shot blocker – which, of course, is why he’s still available. Also currently nursing an ankle sprain, although I have seen no suggestion that it’s serious.

He’s also my first player with PF eligibility. Hibbert was the backup plan, but he was center-only.

I really thought I’d better get some assists, and Carter-Williams seemed like the surest bet, even though I now have three Bucks on my team, as PG, SG, and SF. Not sure what to make of that. MCW has not been particularly durable in his brief NBA career, but when he played last year (66g), he averaged better than 7 assists. He’s a decent shot blocker for a guard (ranked 4th among guards last year, and 1st the year before), which may come in handy, as none of my bigs are monsters in that cat. Shooting percentages are not a strength, but I think I can accommodate that.

If MCW was gone, Mudiay would probably have been the go to guy for this pick.

Hibbert is way too valuable to drop to 87th in this draft. He's on a new team, has looked great in the preseason, and his motivation issues should be solved by Kobe putting a fire under his butt. Historically the Lakers have been a great place for centers, so I'm expecting Hibbert to be the next big man to reap the benefits. I'm hoping for 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks, to go along with good shooting percentages.

Nikola’s overall stats in his rookie year aren’t so hot, but he broke out in the second half: 16 ppg, 6 rpg, 80+ FT% with 5+ attempts per, 1.7 3pg, and 1 steal & 1 block per. He’s the likely starter at SF and even if he’s not he will get plenty of run at both forward spots. Hoiberg is a more offensively minded coach than Thibs so an improvement on his second half performance is in play.

After a down year due to his injury ravaged 2014/2015 season, Jones has a chance at locking down the starting PF spot in Houston.

He puts up solid all-around numbers, although his free throw percentage is a concern with a career mark of .614. In his last healthy season in 2013/2014, Jones averaged 12.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.7 steals and 1.3 blocks, which increased to 1.8 blocks per game last season in a nice uptick.

This one hurt. I was desperate for Terrence Jones with this pick, and he was scooped up 1 pick before me. Agonising! Still, Thad is a great value here and there's top 50 upside in a Brooklyn offense, that relatively speaking, is starved of consistent scoring. I like Thad to have a bounce back season with mid teens points, improved boards, and a bump up in the steals column - that's where his real value lies.

I wonder what I call this guy, Manny? None the less, in some circles Mudiay is being anointed as the leading contender for ROY, in others Towns is the guy. Makes no difference I have them both, whatever that means.

Manny has been given the keys to the Nuggets bus, having shipped Lawson out of town. As with most rookie PG's I suspect TO's and FG% may be an issue, but in our league TO's don't matter.

Hopefully he can deliver a dozen points per, 6-7 assists, 3-4 Boards and 1.5 steals per.

9.01 Bryant, Kobe - LAL - SG
Picks 8 and 9 were the site of a mini-disaster. It was a busy night what with the unthoughtfulness of having a national election being held here the next day. Early in the evening it seemed obvious that it wouldn’t get to me before 8 PM, and I was in no position to set a queue, at least not for 2 picks. So to my regret I thot I had better go out and come back and catch up on my picks for an hour or two sometime when I got back hope a few hours after midnight. Of course after 7 PM a string of picks were whipped off. A few hours later before heading back home I thot to make one last check. Disaster! I had timed out before midnight. And being on the turn I get only one clock for two picks, so, depending on who was up, any number of picks could have been made before I got back. And I had no notes, only unreliable recollections of who I had on my preliminary list.

So I actually picked Kobe at 9.01 before picking at 8.12. This one wasn’t so bad. I hadn’t taken any of the elderly ex-superstars yet but figured I could afford one. expectations for him differ widely. He has been treated as a possible top-60 or even top-50 pick. No one knows whether he’ll lose one step or two, or three. It’s funny to think of Kobe as a pick with upside, but there you are.

8.12 was a different story. For some reason I thot I had Kevin Martin high up on my list here. When I got back I discovered that he had in fact lost his starter’s job, and is a square peg in a round hole on a young team. In retrospect I should have picked Kobe and waited till I got back to make a good pick. It’s uncertain whether Martin will be worth holding at the bottom of my bench for a while. I’ll just treat this as an autopick gone wrong.

Would have chosen at 8.12 if I was thinking: probably J. J. Redick (9.03).

I need my head examined, 3 rookies out of nine picks. Two in a row. But I wanted another big to bolster boards and blocks. Didn't want Noah, thought of Nurkik, and had him queued up, but thought better of it with his knee issue.

No doubt Okafor will get all the minutes he can handle, hopefully he can give me decent boards and blocks.

If my rookies aren't good, my team has its work cut out for it

It's all about trying to hit some threes here, with good percentages and when you hit threes you score points in bunches. I'm hoping for 3 a game the occasional steal a few rebs and around 16 pts per.

A straight choice that came down to Mo v JR Smith. I took Mo on the basis that 3s are a bit easier to find later on and assists should get a decent bump while Kyrie is out. Also, he was another waiver wire star for me last season.

I wanted Kobe here, but he get sucked up round the turn.

His yearly production looks pretty consistent lately. Averaged 14.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.9 3-pointers per game after the All-Star break and seems like an absolutely perfect fit for Stan Van Gundy's offense next to Andre Drummond.

I wanted a third center I could count on before it got too late. No doubt that Noah’s career is trending downwards after a drop in production last season and being troubled with a knee injury, but he still played 30mpg and produced solid big man stats of almost 10 boards and 1+ block per game, and his 4.5 assists was the best amongst all C eligible players.

9.08 Randle, Julius - LAL - PF
This is purely a "gut" pick. From the start of the draft I want to land CJ and Julius at a reasonable DP. With Kobe on his was out, LAL have two players - Russell and Randle. While preseason isn't worth much, Randle has shown the potential to flirt with a triple double (pts, rebounds, assists) if his stats are projected out over normal starter minutes. The future of the Lakers is now and R&R will be the two counted on to carry the load. Now I must look for the next guy who broke his leg last year so I can draft him next.

Ryan Anderson is always an injury risk, but he is also one of the best 3 point shooters in the NBA. He's a good source of points, 3s, and percentages this late in the draft. I also really needed to shore up my Small Forward position, since I only had Demarre Carroll here at this point.

9.11 Smith, J.r. - CLE - SG
If there was a category for knucklehead-decisions, JR Smith would be an elite player. Other than that, he can shoot the 3, and that’s what I need now. With the Cavs nursing a bunch of injuries and ailments, Smith seems poised to log good minutes. Looking for scoring, treys, steals, and a few assists. I’ll deal with the FG%, and although you’d thing a 3-point shooter would be able to knock down free throws at better than 75%, I can live with that too.

Several of the projections I’m working with have him ranked around 90th, so I don’t think this is a reach at all. Eric Gordon was a consideration, but I just don’t trust him to be able to stay healthy.

Leonard is lined up to be the starting PF (also C eligible) for Portland and I will be looking for points, rebounds, threes, and excellent percentages from him. Hopefully, with his size, he will generate a few more blocks this year. He should get plenty of minutes and has been generating a little buzz and moving up the draft ranks, so I decided to pick him here, figuring he wouldn’t be available at my next turn.

Crap and double crap! I had Meyers Leonard queued up for this pick. Did not think he’d go this early. Oh well.

This pick presumes that Porter will get starters minutes in Washington. In the postseason, he averaged 33 min, 10 pts, 8 rebounds, 1.8 ast, 1.2 steals, and 1.2 treys (10 games). Not a statistically compelling sample, but it shows the potential, and at age 22, he has the chance to emerge as a stat stuffer.

10.03 Lee, David - BOS - PF
David Lee was drafted in the top 30 just a couple of seasons ago and the only reason he dropped off the radar is his injury history and losing the job to Draymond Green last year. But now he's in Boston, where he can flourish once again. He doesn't do anything for blocks and steals, but he's a good scorer and most importantly an excellent rebounder. My team was feeling thin in rebounds so it was nice to find a guy that can board this late in the draft, without hurting other categories. Hopefully he avoids the freak injuries this year!

Having messed up my C pick earlier, Leonard, Anderson or D lee were going to solve the problem. Unfortunately none of them fell to me. Enter "best available". He had settled in over the last few years as one of the league's best high-volume shooters, a Rotisserie stud who could contribute across the board in a way many specialists simply can't.

Mo Williams was a solid pick for me in the last round, so that freed me up to have a bit of a punt in this round. Hood is a good punt. He's lights out from 3 point range, and i don;t really mind that he's not the starter. I had my eye on Portis from the beginning of the preseason, liking his hustle and performances. Originally I wanted to take him in rnd 11. However the buzz on him kept getting louder and louder so as we approached the end of round 10 I took a peek at the draft grid and didn't like what I saw. I felt that both Toral and Sandy were likely to pick a Forward with at least one of their two picks and was afraid he would not make it back to me so I pushed him ahead of PJ Tucker in my queue and drew him in this round. I think he will see plenty of action and give me excellent benefit at this late position

He is on a new team, Melo is back, and maybe, if Melo can remember to pas the ball, his extra attention might free up Afflalo for some open looks.

Major knee surgery derailed a promising rookie season last year. Jabari is still rehabbing, " supposedly " on track for the beginning of the season, but I seriously doubt the Bucks will rush him back. This is more a pick for later on this year.

Hopefully once healthy, and hopefully sooner than later, Parker can put up some numbers that made him last years rookie of the month for November. That should mean double digit scoring, 6 or so boards, and some assists and steals.

I was debating a few guys with this pick, and decided to take a risk on a young guy who is expected to get big minutes. I usually don't like taking rookies in a draft, but 2nd year guys are my bread and butter. Gordon was spectacular in the summer league, averaging 22 points, 12 boards, 2 3s, and 2 blocks. Not yet clear if he’ll start, but as Boston's best interior defender who was just signed for $12million, he should log plenty of PT. Still only 28, and has been reasonably durable. Until now, I had only one player eligible for the PF slot, and I think I’m still light in rebounds, so I needed someone who could help fill both needs. Mozgov was the backup option, but he was center-only, and I already have two of those.

Two Johnsons on this turn! One with speculative upside who might crash and burn, and one who should provide a stable foundation, but without a lot of upside (barring other Celtics injuries.)

At this point Davis isn't slated to be a starter in Portland, and that might not change. The good news is he should see plenty of minutes as a back up, as he did last year for the Lakers.

Aldridge and Lopez have been replaced by Plumlee and Leonard, arguably a downgrade in talent. I envision more minutes for Davis than the 23 he logged last year, and an uptick in his stats from last year, which 8 points, 8 boards and 1.5 blocks. Granted his FT% stinks, but his FG% was a stellar 60%.

That would be a reasonable return for a round 13 investment

Strickly a Rotation man who had a good year last year and is now in a situation where he stands to get minutes when Kobe has a night off or an injury. He is in a three way competition for the PS/SG rotation so nothing is guaranteed as far as minutes etc. When he does play he gets to the line fairly well where he shoots just fine. Lauvergne is the rarest of players, a tough Frenchman. Denver's starting center is injured and Lauvergne has had a great preseason in his place, with really solid shooting and big rebounding numbers. And for the time being, he will start at center and who knows, maybe he'll retain the job even after Nurkic comes back. I'm also a Game of Thrones fan, so it's nice to own a guy named Joffrey.

13.12 Gibson, Taj - CHI - PF
Gibson is in a crowded frontcourt situation, but I expect he will put up solid numbers when he plays. Decent stats across the board, he should be a good source of blocks.

First year player who is in contention for a starter's role, he is a defensive specialist at this point. I drafted him mainly for his potential to provide blocks and steals.

14.02 Vasquez, Greivis - MIL - PG
Backup PG to Carter-Williams (who seems to miss his share of games.) Should get enough PT to matter, regardless, and could even play with MCW on occasion. I’m long the Bucks’ backcourt as it is, so Vasquez provides some potentially useful backup protection.

14.03 Warren, T.j. - PHO - SF
TJ Warren is in his second year, but is going to be used as a 6th man in Phoenix (if he doesn't win the starting job over PJ Tucker). He has been playing great in the preseason, scoring 14+ in 4 out of 6 games, and averaging about 2 steals per game. He also has pretty good rebounds and assists. The only weakness seems to be that he has no 3 point shot (1 for 10). Assuming he can get 25-30 minutes per game, he will be a very valuable player.

14.04 Len, Alex - PHO - C
I took Len as sort of a handcuff to Chandler. His numbers are very usable if he gets minutes but that most likely won't be the case if Tyson is healthy. Still at this point in the draft this is a decent upside pick.

14.05 Koufos, Kosta - SAC - C
A theme...like Burke and Mahinmi, I opted to take a big man who is being pushed for his starting gig by a rookie. At the time of the pick I actually expected Koufos to anchor the second team down low. I actually like this spot for him better since Cousins will dominate the statistics for the starters. Hopefully Koufos will get more boards and rebounds because he doesn't have to compete with Cousins

14.06 Lee, Courtney - MEM - SG
At this point in the draft, I am focused on finding starters. Lee has pretty good shooting %s and can add points and 3s in bunches. Nothing too exciting but I think hes a decent pick up this late in the draft

The Mavs backcourt is banged up and someone needs to play. Enter Jenkins who has started all 5 preseason games and hasn’t scored less than 16 points, including 2 games with 26 points.

14.08 Lavine, Zach - MIN - PG
He has the athleticism to create mismatches in the open court, and hopefully can improve on the defensive end to become a solid two-way player. He averaged 13.8 points, 4 rebounds, 5.1 assists with 1 steal and decent efficiency in 40 games as a starter last year.

14.09 Green, Gerald - MIA - SG
Luol Deng and Dwayne Wade have a 0% chance of playing close to 82 games or 35+ minutes. There is ample opportunity for Green to do what he does best, which is bomb 3s. And when one of the aforementioned gets their inevitable injury, Green will be waiting to go into hyperdrive.

14.10 Adams, Steven - OKC - C
Looking for a third center, one who would play significant enough minutes to contribute something if I had an injury (likely with Dwight) plus the extra two games are important. One reason I really like this format. Steven is the starter although Enes Kantor may get the most minutes. He scores well enough gathers in modest boards and blocks a few shots.

14.11 Mclemore, Ben - SAC - SG
Pick 167, I'm getting a starter.

Ben showed significant improvement after what would be considered a disappointing rookie season. He finished with per game average of 12 points, 3.5 boards, 1 steal, and 1.7 threes, shooting a respectable 44% from the floor and 81% from the line. I could do worse.

Rondo is in town, DeMarcus is down low, I'm thinking another step forward for McLemore.

Really a playmaking 4;t he Euro veteran would be an asset if he gets playing time, and is putting up minutes and stats in pre-season. Patrick Patterson (15.02) was next in queue.

15.02 Patterson, Patrick - TOR - PF
This could be a wasted pick, but we are at that stage in the draft. Rumored to have a starting gig in Toronto, his lackluster play may have opened the door for others.

Last season Patterson played in 81 games with rather pedestrian stats of 8 points 5+ boards, but 1.3 threes, with decent %, and chipping in some blocks and steals.

If named the starter, or at least logging starters minutes, this pick could be OK. If not he gets tossed back on the scrap heap. I'm sure we will all have our fair share of those

15.03 Smith, Josh - LAC - SF
With the recent news that Smith will play some minutes a C, it seems likely his role, time on the court, will take a small boost. That being the case this guy can stuff stats when given the opportunity. His FT shooting is disappointing, but since he is not my main guy at SF/PF/maybe C, the steals and stats he does generate when I do play him will more than make up for that deficiency.

Green was off to a good start with the Celtics before a midseason trade to the Grizzlies slowed down his groove. Green still played 30+ mpg for them, and perhaps a full offseason with the team translates to an improvement.

15.07 Motiejunas, Donatas - HOU - PF
Not overly happy with this pick – hes banged up and Jones is back at full strength. However, Montie should get some good backup minutes and if anything happens to Jones, he will slide into the starting PF spot and might get a few starts at C too. Montiejunas has some potential but I think there were better options out there.

15.08 Harris, Gary - DEN - SG
Denver is an interesting team this year and they are going with a very young back court. Who knows if Harris will be on my team two weeks from now. I will use the first couple weeks to see if his 3 pt and steal contributions are enough to hold down a roster spot.

He is starting for Detroit and can give me some threes, really nothing to be excited about. Probably waiver wire fodder soon.

I really wanted Gary Harris here and thought he would make it to me until G took him just in front of me. Payback for Kyrie I guess.

15.10 Wroten, Tony - PHI - PG
Last season, Wroten averaged 18 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 3ptr as a starter. Then he tore his ACL and missed the rest of the season. He is aiming to return in November, although the Philly coach said it could be more like December. Even so, if he gets back into his starting role and can give me 60 games, then he is a great value for this late in the draft.

16.03 Thompson, Tristan - CLE - C
Thompson was great in the playoffs and therefore he decided he was worth a max contract so he sat out all of training camp and the preseason. That uncertainty has obviously hurt his draft stock. Luckily, he came to an agreement with the Cavs about an hour before my pick so I was able to swoop in and take him. For a final round pick, he can give me 10 points and 10 boards, and has the potential for more. He'll be coming off the bench for now, but it's only a matter of time before Varejao or Love goes down with another injury.

Not going to lie, this was basically a wasted pick to get the draft over with. Several of the guys that I wanted with my last pick went before me. I had actually planned to take Tristan Thompson in hopes that he may sign in the first few weeks and then the news broke before the pick got to me. Tony Wroten was my other short list guy who also went.

In 13 games as a starter last year, Shabazz put up 15 pts, 5 reb, 1 three, 1 total blocks + steals with solid %s. In his latest preseason game he went 15 pts, 5 bds, 4 assts. Tayshaun Prince is currently stated to start over him, but perhaps talent wins out sooner than later.

I wanted Nate Robinson with this pick and actually added and selected him in Draftime. Then i realised he'd been taken much earlier in the round with a placeholder.

That's ok. I went with Marco instead, as i think Ben Mclemore will be a bust, and Marco has the chance to put big numbers in a reserve role.

16.10 Capela, Clint - HOU - C
He has played well in place of Dwight in the preseason, grabbing a couple of double doubles along the way. He will start the first HOU game due to suspension of Dwight, and looks to be the first guy in line after Dwight at the moment. I actually had him ahead of Steven Adams (14.10) for most of the draft, but decided tho go with Adams before Clint because of the guaranteed minutes Adams will get. I am very glad he was still around at the end of the draft. I think he will far outplay his Draft Position.

NOTE: While many of my picks were made automatically by the queue this in no way undermines the value of the selections made. It is a simple thing to establish a queue according to perceived value/needs and then tweak it as the drift progresses. I realize there is a sense of satisfaction in "selecting" Player A, but logging on to drafttime and checking the progress is also like opening a well wrapped present when you see which of the wonderful gifts you wanted has actually been given you. I do heartily recommend trying it.

16.11 Humphries, Kris - WAS - PF
Let's face it, Nene is old(er), brittle, always seemingly injured. One site has already posted that Nene will come off the bench, and moved Humphries to the top of the depth chart.

Well see, but with the next to the last pick in our draft, I'm not expecting a heck of allot.

But as a Nets fan, it is only a few years ago, the Kris averaged a double-double. I don't expect that at all. In 21 minutes last year he averaged 8ppg and 6.5 boards. If he starts this year, who knows.

Did I mention last nights line? 16 points, 12 RB's, 2 steals, and, get this, 2 threes. Preseason, I know
