With a new windsprint period starting, and the existing PSC threads getting rather lengthy, it's probably a good time to start a fresh thread.
For this week (12/10-16), I once again monitored the number of trades made by each team in the top 50 of the free game. I used the top 50 teams as of the morning of 12/10.
Of those 50, only 4 teams used more than 5 trades. Three were teams named "Logan_something", of which two used 9 trades and one used 6. The best of those three teams just cracked the top ten last week, and it looks like he's trying to make a move by using extra trades. (That same team used 11 trades last week.) The only other team to exceed 5 trades is coldwater coyotes, who used 7.
43 teams used exactly 5 trades. Two teams used only 4, and one team failed to trade. |

Here is the list of all players owned by those 50 teams, along with the change from the prior week. Note that Tinsley is no longer on all rosters - but he is still on 42 out of 50.
The most heavily added players were Garnett (+30), Donyell Marshall (+24), Mike Miller (+23), and Jason Williams (+20). The most dropped include Payton (-30), Desmond Mason (-25), and Derrick Coleman (-21).

Thanks, Guru
I am just barely in the top 50, so it is fun to see that I'm the only genius to pick up Bonzi Wells this week. I doubt that little touch of differentiation will make up the 1,000 point difference in our squads... :)
Surprised to see 42 teams keeping Tinsley and his two-game week.

Given Tinsley's price, that was an easy call. I'm surprised 8 people dropped him.

I was close to dropping Tinsley, but realized I would just be picking him back up next week so at his price that made him a season long keeper. If you keep him for 2 in 7 you will keep him for anything short of an injury or major/rookie slump/wall.
Plus I wanted to try and get rid of my Houston trio, but had to hold on to Moochie to get out of Coleman for the last time.

Ahh I'm making some very bad calls on studs as of late...
Had Shareef when he was out, picked up Artificial Iverson for his 2 games off last week, and I've had Grant Hill screw me 2 seperate weeks this year.
All in all not bad, I still have 1 team hanging in the top 20 but I thought it was time to change things up a bit. We'll see everything pans out.
Also, I'm happy to say, I haven't used a single pay trade thus far.

Help! I'm falling and I can't get up!
With the recent spate of injuries and disappointments on my roster, I bit the bullet and bought an extra trade for the next week. Hopefully, this will stop the bleeding. (Hemorrhaging is more apt.)
This is primarily a reminder to everyone playing that the roster freeze is 6:30pm EST today.

Looks like a few more people decided that 5 trades wasn't quite enough. Here's the trade tally for the top 50 teams as of 12/16 (actually, it's only 49 teams, because I failed to capture one team's roster for last week):
No trades: 5 (the best of these was previously ranked #23) 1 trade: 1 team (hmmm... I wonder if he thought he banked the rest?) 4 trades: 1 5 trades: 35 6 trades: 2 7 trades: 2 (HOOPDREAMZ and Logan_Knicks, ranked #1 and #4) 8 trades: 2 9 trades: 1
I'll post the summary roster recap in a moment.

Modified the optimizer for PSC this morning (maybe I should have done this Sunday!), and ran it optimizing projected points for the current week. Here's what I got, assuming the extra slots were forwards:
Duncan, Tim Pierce, Paul Miller, Andre Davis, Baron O'Neal, Jermaine Tinsley, Jamaal Williams, Jason Gasol, Pau Murray, Lamond Battier, Shane Swift, Stromile Kirilenko, Andrei Person, Wesley Jones, Jumaine Coleman, Derrick Parker, Tony MacCulloch, Todd Nailon, Lee
and here's what I got when I gave 1 wild card to guard:
Duncan, Tim Pierce, Paul Miller, Andre Davis, Baron O'Neal, Jermaine Tinsley, Jamaal Marshall, Donyell Williams, Jason Gasol, Pau Murray, Lamond Swift, Stromile Kirilenko, Andrei Person, Wesley Jones, Jumaine Turkoglu, Hidayet Parker, Tony MacCulloch, Todd Nailon, Lee
BTW, if anyone wants the modified spreadsheet, to post (I don't have a website to post from), or for there own amusement, email me.

Huh. Why the heck would Iverson end up in this last optimization - 3 games and 4.9/g/m this week.
I mean, just off the top of my head - pierce, walker and cassell would generate more pts for the week at a lower price, by virtue of the extra game played.
This is the first time I have used this optimizer - is there something I am missing here?
... sure enough. I block AI from the analysis, and I get pierce, with the extra money used to upgrade some cheaper slots.
Confusing.

The optimizer has a tendency to get confused sometimes. I think this is due to a combination of the large sample size and the use of integer programming. The solver routine sometimes gets fixated on someone who is not optimal.
Sometimes, resorting the player list can help. I usually sort my player listing based on projected points. But even then, I occasionally get suboptimal results.
So there's still no substitute for some critical review - as you have done. If someone looks out of place, then force them out manually, and see if it helps. I also like to try to force a few different players into the solution, just to see how it adapts. Select a player or two that seem to make sense - both cheap and expensive - and see whether you can get a better result.
The other caveat is to be aware of the averages being used. If using a longer term average, then recent trends are often missed. But when using shorter term averages, anomalous games - either higher or low - can significantly distort projected points vs. what you would likely expect.

Thanks, Guru. I won't go searching for a bug in the spreadsheet.
Yeah - I am pondering the short-term vs. long-term trends issues now as well. I had been looking pretty much exclusively YTD, but started looking at 2 week projections this week. Al Harrington was the biggest fish I was missing, due to his increased PT (ignored him anyway, though my competition didn't). Though last night makes you wonder if the last 2-weeks were more fluke than actual change in trend.
A weighting of near-term and ytd trends, maybe...
Having had no previous hoops fantasy experience, I still haven't gotten a strong feel for how much ordinary variability is expected in individual performances, and how much PT may vary without implying any trend.
I am going to draw the line (so to speak) and regression analysis, dangit!

This has been eating at me for a while now, from the last thread when Guru said that CC's victory would be "hollow" if he were to use pay trades and win the game. Well now Guru has used a trade too after somewhat lobbying for people not to.
Warning I'm gonna rant here...
Look I don't know what any of your guys problem is regarding the PSC game and it's RULES. The rules tell you that you get 5 free trades a week, anymore you pay for. NOWHERE does it say that you are limited to the free trades that they provide you. If I wanted to buy an extra 13 trades a week and use them to fully rotate my roster thats MY perogative. Everyone who is using the excuse that they can't afford extra trades and that it's unfair to everyone else to use trades is only kidding themselves.
The best managers playing fantasy sports will tell you the following about any game they play. 1. READ the rules of the game you are playing. 2.UNDERSTAND the rules of the game you are playing. 3. most important, TAKE MAXIMUM advantage of those rules within the structure of the game. I'll guarantee you the winning manager of any fantasy game subscribes to this theory and practice.
For anyone who feels the right to put down anyone using extra trades, or say that their victory isn't just they have no room to speak. If you really wanted to attack someone you'd attack the PSC commish for stating a free game, which is basically only free by registration and the 5 trades you get weekly. That doesn't exactly fit the definition of FREE now does it??????

In defense of the PSC game, you can play the game for free, therefore i believe it does fit the defnition of FREE. It might not be completely fair, but its free nonetheless and it sure as hell beats the other free games such as "staring 5" or wahtever that game is called at TSN and that lame Swirve pick em game...

I had hoped to go without paid trades, although I think I also said "barring injury problems" or some such caveat.
After having such a horrendous week and a couple of injuries to deal with (should have dealt Kenny Thomas as well), and after having seen that some of the other leaders were regularly buying extra trades, I decided to use one extra, at least for this week. No plans to use more, but those plans could change.
I also decided that I'd give advance notice about the extra trade, since I had gone on record as saying I'd hoped not to use one. So I posted [9] my "confession" about 6 hours in advance of the freeze.
Guess I have no "hollowed ground" to stand on, though.

Well, I have currently not used any more trades than the free ones. My 'challenger' in my league has used a few pay, not sure of the number, but injuries bit him this last week and I caught him on Wednesday or Thursday of last week along with finishing 7th overall for the week. Currently at 40th overall. So I'm guessing only those that feel they have a chance of winning the whole 'ball-of-wax' will probably pay for trades. Closer to the end of the season the more tempting it will be. Haven't gained much on top 5 since they set the margin after week 2, but holding about the same margin through past 5-7 weeks. Will see if I can gain anymore this week. I don't have Shaq.

Sorry to be a little late with this week's trade analysis for the free game.
Once again, I tabulated the trading activity of the top 50 teams as of the end of the prior week. Here are the results by number of trades made for the week of 12/25-30:
# trades #teams None 1 2 3 4 3 5 38 6 1 7 1 8 3
Of the top ten teams, only two used more than 5 trades - Logan Knicks (7) and coldwater coyotes (8).
Surprising to see that three teams used only 2 trades. The best of those three teams was Pivo, which was ranked #14 heading into this week.

Gee at Shaq's price I would think that there wouldn't be that many owners that really could afford Shaq unless he played 5 games minimum for the week.

For anyone that doesn't know. This week's roster freeze is earlier than the normal. Normally it is at 7:30 EST (I think, maybe 7:00), but there is an early game today so the freeze is 2:30 EST/1:30 CST/12:30 MST/11:30 PST. As of this post that only gives you about 2.5 hours to make your changes.

Looks like a lot of people got caught by the early freeze. Ten of the top 50 teams failed to trade.
Here's the tally on the weekly trade volume:Trades #teams None 10 3 2 4 1 5 32 7 1 (HOOPDREAMZ) 8 1 (Marbury_2_Marion) 11 2 12 1
The teams using 11-12 trades were the three "Logan_xxx" teams, which have been using a lot of trades most weeks.

Curious to think about what the "Logans" are up to.
First, there are three teams registered (Logan_Knicks, Logan_Knicks1, and Logan_Wildcats), and given the similar trading patterns, they are most likely related. Since there is supposedly a limit of 2 teams for the free game, perhaps one is registered in the name of someone else.
This week, those three teams used 19 paid trades combined. That's a total charge of $33.25 for just this week. At that rate, the free game can get rather expensive.

4 still have Shaq.... 1 still with Lamond Murray.... 7 with a marginal Billups 5 with a marginal 'Big Dog' Robinson
27 still have Kirilenko? Interesting.... 29 with Coleman (guess they didn't know he was going to get a suspension)
Brand and Kidd massive adds.....
Looks like the 'Logan' teams will probably have 80% of their rosters with 4 game players this week. I sure hope this Logan guy isn't a PSC employee or friend..... He probably will have a huge lead after this week for the top spot.
I think I agree with some of the others that if you advertise a free game, then there shouldn't be an option for those that 'HAVE' money to throw away to create an unbalanced field. Games are meant to be played on a level playing field (of course this is also my argument against the Yankees :} ). This is the same old addage of 'the rich get richer'.

I'm curious to see what happened to those 10 that didn't make changes. Did some of them make changes after the deadline which would affect their rosters for next week, but putting in players for this week? I'm going to guess probably 5 out of the 10 might have been burnt by that.

I'm playing with the 5 FREE TRADES every week. PERIOD.
I have 2 teams - lead the division in one and am stuck behind HOOPDREAMZ in the other. Can't seem to close the gap on HOOPDREAMZ, but he is not pulling away any either...
I got no problems with people spending money to try to buy their way to the top - that's pretty much how the real world works. Logan_Whatever can buy a bunch of trades every week. And RotoGuru can buy a trade "just in an emergency". And I will just work hard and hustle and do my best to keep up. Maybe I will. Maybe not. But I'm having a blast, and being one of the "little guys" (only using free trades) competing against the "big guys" (guys willing to spend money to buy their way to the top) adds to the allure of the game.
I like being one of the little guys / underdogs. I do hope the final winner is a free trades team. But I got no problem with the guys who buy trades.

Just to recap my PSC baseball experience.
I used zero free trades until the next-to-last week of the season, when I bought a few just to lock things up.
The guy who finished second routinely bought 3-6 extra trades every week. By the end of the season, I figured he had spent more than $100. Maybe it was worth it to him to finish second.
So buying the extra trades is not a sure method to finish on top. (Obviously, it helps. But it can be overcome with judicious selections. And in my baseball experience, many of my decisions turned out to be boneheaded. I just had a favorable balance, I guess.)
Still, as I've said before, I'd prefer a game that had a hard limit on the number of weekly trades. The one-price game allows unlimited trades, which I don't find appealing. In football, I played both the one-price and free games, and enjoyed the free game much more, since it forces you to plan ahead.
Food for thought for PSC: why not change the one-price game (future seasons) to have a weekly trade limit? I don't think most people play that version to have unlimited trades - they play it to level the trade playing field. I'd be much more inclined to play the one-price game if there was a weekly trade limit.
Second thought: When counting trades, base trade counts on changes to the previous week's roster (and not any interim adjustments).
Here's what I'm getting at. Suppose I decide to drop Duncan, and add Garnett. Then, at the last minute, Garnett gets injured, and I'd prefer to keep Duncan and trade another slot instead. Under the current framework, I have to wait until the last moment to make my trades, since there is no way to undo a trade already processed. Of course, waiting until the last moment entails other risks.
Why not have all trades placed in a "pending" file, and not actually processed until the trade deadline? This way, you could submit a provisional trade plan in advance, but still elect to override it at a later time (but still prior to the freeze).
I realize it would require some additional programming, but it doesn't seem unduly onerous, and would certainly improve the game flow. It might also help those managers who fail to recognize early trade freeze times, as evidently happened this week.

DanO, I'm playing the same way you are. I do lead my league, but only because the 2nd place team had problems with some of his 'additional' trades he used. So that part is luck. Leading my league though I am only in 41st place overall and almost 1300 points behind Hoopdreamz so I really have no chance at anyone that is already 800 points ahead since that would involve having every player with 4 or 5 game weeks on my roster. Heck, I'm not even thinking of trading out of Tinsley unless he is injured for long period of time or starts playing 3-4 minutes a game regularly. So all I can hope for is to win my league and maybe sneak into the top 20 toward the end of the season when everyone else gets too busy with baseball.

I'm in third (15 or so points behind)in the football and trying to come up with a team for this last week is hard. I like games with limited numbers of people to compete against.

True splat, only problem with having too many Clips or Blazers is that all of them only play 3 games the week afterwards.....

D'Oh! I changed my FM Mavs roster w/o checking the standings and didn't realize those jokers had a lead in the current windsprint! My filler C, Jason Collins' 91 points was the big surprise of the week.
The baseball cards I received from winning one of the 1-Price football windsprints got the once over from my mom during the holidays and she absconded with the Tino Martinez Team USA! Says she uses them for bookmarks. right! Now where are the other 10,000 cards from my youth?
It's all good though.

For the free game, here's a look back at the week's results, related to the number of trades used.
The three "Logan" teams used 11, 11, and 12 trades. They averaged 1613 points for the week (ranging from 1600-1625). Not a very good return on the extra investment, it would appear.
The other two teams who extra bought trades got 1680 and 1682 points (for 8 and 7 trades, respectively). Of those two teams, one was hurt by Cassell's 2 DNPs (HOOPDREAMZ).
The teams which only used the free allotment of 5 trades averaged 1640 points. The range was from a high of 1812 (deepsnapper - WTG!) to a low of 1501.
Three teams used less than 5 trades. Those teams used 3, 3, and 4 trades, and all scored in the 1500s. Still not sure what they were thinking of.
Not surprisingly, those who neglected (or forgot) to trade paid a heavy price. Those ten teams averaged only 1433 points. The best of that group (Pivo, ranked #6), had 1582. That team also used only 2 trades the prior week, and is clearly doing exceptionally well, given the trade shortness. Could he simply misunderstand the rules?

I wonder just how much some of the injuries to top teams will cause them to become 'disinterested' in spending money when they lose ground. I know that week before last I had Lamond Murray who never played, but had most of his teammates and they covered the difference. My closest opponent in my division has used more trades, but also got bit by Cassell and someone else with DNPs. Now I have almost a 600 point lead when 3 or 4 weeks ago he was up by 200. Now if I could gain on the leaders (slow down HOOPDREAMZ and GURU).

I like the simultaneous movement of all the Turkoglu owners. No one owner kept him. I don't know that I had him at all so far, maybe first 2 or 3 weeks, but don't think so.

This is not a strategy post, but I just have to say, I got my baseball prize (cards) yesterday and it is better than Christmas! Opening a package and finding it stacked with nice cards of your favorite players, how cool! Thanks "The Commish" and PSC!

I also received my baseball prizes today. I won the free game, and as I recall, my prize packages were to have a total value of over $1000.
Very neat stuff!
1. Subway Series 2000 plaque, with an 8x10 photo collage of some Yankees and Mets
2. Framed autographed photo of Kobe Bryant (Yeah, I know it's not baseball, but Chris asked me if it was OK to mix sports.)
3. 8x10 autographed photo of Bob Feller
4. 8x10 autographed photo of Bill Freehan
125 baseball cards, ranging in value from $.50 to $150. Top valued card is a Mark McGwire 1984 USA Baseball Team card (Topps). Other notable cards include Vlad Guerrero 2nd year card (1997 Fleer Showcase), C.C. Sabathia rookie card (Bowman Chrome) , Vlad Guerrero "top prospect" card (1995, Upper Deck), and an Ozzie Smith Padres card (Topps Archive Reserve reprint of 1976 card - not worth much, but cool timing nevertheless).
Thanks, Chris.

KtxGod - Here are the 6 moves I found for that team:
Before => After MacCulloch => Rebraca Brand => Duncan Hassell => Crotty Kobe => Nash B. Davis => Kidd R. Wallace => Nowitzki
Curiously, I have that team down for only 4 trades in the prior week. Perhaps there was a system glitch at PSC and one of last week's trades wasn't correctly reported when I did last week's update? Was one of these trades actually done the week before?

Very bizarre, because when I accessed your team on the morning of 1/14 (2 days ago), TMac2 was still listed in that slot. Are you sure your score for last week was accurate? Your team page showed 1976 points last week, which was consistent with TMac2, rather than Rebraca.
On the other hand, since TMac2 outpointed Rebraca by 24 points last week, maybe you should let sleeping dogs lie...
Nice trade, BTW!

Hey does PSCHALLENGE give any kind of prize to the high score each week, or just to the 6 week "WINDSPRINT" winners, or what?
I finally got it all together for a week with "DANO KNOWS HOOPS" and led the world last week. Of course, I still trail ROTOGURU and HOOPDREAMZ by a thousand points each, but at least I made a dent in their leads this week...

Trades # teams None 6 (!) - perhaps the early freeze once again took its toll 2 1 4 4 5 33 6 3 (Coldwater coyotes and the two lower ranked Logan teams) 7 1 (shark - ranked #45) 8 1 (HOOPDREAMZ) 10 1 (Logan_Knicks)
DanO, your two teams each showed up with 4 trades apiece. Is that correct? If so, could you not find anything better to do with that last trade?

Well, I'm the one with Jermaine O'Neal. I was in NH from last Sunday to Wednesday night, left Thursday for Vegas and did not return until Monday at 6 AM. All along figuring I had until 6:00 Central time to make changes. Got up at Noon Monday and remembered that they had games on MLK Day early. Logged on at 12:10 PM Central time to find out the deadline was 10 minutes earlier. Long story short, I got the shaft this time. Hoping it doesn't hurt me terribly. Only lost 2 spots with him injured last week, probably if lucky lose about 6-10 which would still keep me in the top 50 and hopefully still at top of my division (leading by 650+).

But then, I don't know how those teams would be doing if they only used 5 trades.

I think allowing 1 or 2 in-week substitutions would make the game's competition based more on skill and force some interesting choices along the way - do you swap out Kenny Thomas immediately, or hold your trade in case Garnett goes down?
Of course, this would add more than a weekly cycle of work for Chris et al, so I won't hold my breath.
It's just frustrating that injuries, and the capricious timing of them, have such a drastic influence on your performance. How the players do is almost secondary, as long as the are just on the court!

GURU - Yeah, I only traded 4 players on each team. The teams are similar, but have a few differences. I didn't use the last trade on either team because I liked who I had for the week after the four trades... I pretty much keep most of my players based upon pts/$ over the long haul, and trade expensive people weekly based upon the next 7 or 14 days of schedule. And the high $ guys I traded for last week mostly stayed healthy and had 4 games a week for a couple weeks in a row, so I kept them...
Which means that probably all of them will sprain ankles or get ejected or hit by meteors. But this is FUN, and now I'm really hooked on ESPNnews (like I was only moderately hooked before) and actually read the box scores for all the games and compute TSN and PSchallenge points in my head as game stats flash across the bottom of the screen on TV. I may need a 12 step program when hoops is over....

Lately, I've been primarly tracking my team against HOOPDREAMZ. Each week, I determine which players are different between our teams, and follow their progress separately.
Lately, there have only been about 5 differences, and most are lower priced players (the aggregate cost of those five is about $14m this week). Here is the competition for this week:
My "difference" team: Jumaine Jones Jarron Collins Scott Padgett Paul Pierce Rodney Buford
His team: Lee Nailon Desmond Mason Chauncey Billups Moochie Norris Nazr Mohammed
When you look at our rosters in total, these players don't look like the critical ones. But when you get down to one-and-one competition, they are the only players that matter (for this week, at least). All of the Garnetts, Duncans, Malones, Nowitzkis, etc. cancel out.
It certainly puts a different perspective on the game. Clearly, you've got to maintain the diligence and flexibility to keep the proper studs flowing through at the proper times. But given that we seem to be approaching that aspect similarly, the title may ultimately be decided by the selection of cheapies.
Of course, I'm not dismissing the possibility that some of the other teams are also in contention. The "eastsiders" team has consistently been tracking us, and could easily overtake us with a good week. "Logan Knicks" has shown a persistent willingness to buy extra trades, and someday that might actually translate into enough extra points. And the next group of teams aren't out of it either. But given my limited attention span, my primary focus has been on the closest contender.
